Wearing “No Matraville Incinerator” T-shirts, protestors brandished freshly-printed posters and a diagram showing where the toxic plume will go. Randwick City’s Mayor, Danny Said, who also attended the protest, said:
NO TOXIC INCINERATOR FOR MATRAVILLE! P19 NOEL D'SOUZA THANKS THE COMMUNITY NO TOXIC INCINERATOR! P19 THE CALTEX STORY PHOTO EXHIBITION P21 We are three young guys striving to deliver a unique customer experience in a bike shop. Giuliano is a bike lover since the age of 11. After working as a treasurer for global corporations he moved to Australia where he could get back to his passion and worked for a few years as a bike mechanic before launching Bondi Bike Shop.
“There are absolutely no community benefits. This area has copped more than its share of industrial pollution for decades. Enough is enough!”
Yuri is an Electric engineer and has been working alongside Giuliano as a bike mechanic for almost two years. He is our E-bike Specialist.
Member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, agreed. He said: “The Port Botany area is one of the most polluted areas of the country and we don’t need any more damaging emissions spewing over our community.”
Diego, our head in marketing, was Giuliano's classmate at university and has collected a vast knowledge about business through the years adding lots of value to the team.

Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez fumes over Matraville and the Recycling and Recovery. They want to build surrounding area.
Mr Hanson said the incinerator would provide steam for Opal’s paper mill by burning 165,000 tonnes of “non-recyclable” waste each year – 35,000 tonnes of which will contain PVC, which creates highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins
Local politicians, businesses and residents – some of whose homes are less than 150 metres from the planned incinerator site – are fuming over the proposal, which bypasses the local government approval process.
He said the plan was not only a danger to public health, but did not make economic sense. “Waste incineration is the most polluting and expensive way to make energy,”

Noel says thank you to the community
PLUS COUNCIL NEWS P22 The man whose name is synonymous with Matraville, Noel D’Souza, is about to retire. Well, kind of.
He has sold his twin chemist shops on either side of Bunnerong Rd, but will remain active behind the pharmacy counter as a consultant if required. Meanwhile, he is looking forward to the next state election, when he will have another shot at winning the State Seat of Maroubra as an Independent.
His good works have extended way beyond the pharmacy counter. For the past six years he has been a Randwick City Councillor and was Mayor of Randwick from 2015 to 2017. During that time, he has notched up many achievements of great benefit to the community, including: • Giving booze-swilling beach hoons their marching orders by banning alcohol consumption on beaches and reserves in Coogee. • Building of an all-inclusive playground and skate park at Chifley. • The underground Coogee Beach facilities.
The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. They want to build a 65 metre high smoke stack to disperse the fumes.
DIRECTORY CLASSIFIED + BIZ FINDER LOCATOR LIFTOUT Opposition to the proposal is being organised by the Matraville Precinct and led by chemical engineer, Chris Hanson, who started the No More Toxic Incinerators pages on Facebook and Twitter, along with a dedicated web page.
Noel hands over the reins of his business on December 14. “It’s a bitter-sweet moment because although I am happy to be retiring, I will miss the challenges of business,” he said. He established his first pharmacy at the northern end of Bunnarong Rd in 1984 and in 1987 shifted to the centre of Matraville, where he opened a second shop alongside The Commonwealth Bank. In 2012 he opened his pharmacy in the Woolworths shopping complex in Matraville.
We’d also like to thank Dave Sharma MP, Federal Member for Wentworth for his Christmas message on Page 5 and let your know of Noel D’Souza’s intention to stand for the State Seat of Maroubra on Page 19. We wish them both well in the new year.
He was recently honoured by France, which has appointed him a Knight in the National Order of Légion d’Honneur for his work on securing the La Perouse Museum for the Randwick community and creating a place where French, Australian and Indigenous culture can be celebrated.
P11-14
“I want to extend a big thank you to all the membersSUBURBS of the community who have EASTERN supported my shops over the last 35 years,” he said.
Now he says he’ll continue to help the people of south ward while working towards winning the State Seat of Maroubra in March 2023. He won 13.4 per cent of votes when he stood against Labor incumbent Michael Daley in last year’s state election and says that by 2023 far more voters will be hungry for a change.

Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.”

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR OUTDOOR GATHERINGS?
From Dec 1 up to 50 people can gather outdoors in a public space.
WILL PUBLIC TRANSPORT BE RUNNING AS NORMAL ON NEW YEAR’S EVE?
To maintain physical distancing across the network, public transport services continue to run at a reduced capacity.
To keep everyone in NSW safe, New Year’s Eve celebration arrangements will be different this year.
GENERAL PUBLIC
Whether you are planning a celebration at home or in your local community, remember to ensure the safety of your family and friends.
At midnight there will be a short firework display from Sydney Harbour Bridge only. This will be broadcast live on ABC TV, allowing you and your friends or family to watch from home.
Be aware of the number of people allowed in your home, maintain safe hygiene practices and use QR codes to check in if you are going out to a restaurant, pub or bar. For residents of (and visitors to) the Greater Sydney area, a number of changes to the New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Sydney Harbour will be in place.
There will be no 9pm family fireworks or activities around Sydney Harbour this year.
There will also be a number of measures in place to strictly control crowd numbers around the Sydney Harbour.
DESIGNATED ZONES
Designated zones will be established for Circular Quay, North Sydney and the city. A designated Green Zone will be established for Circular Quay and at key
public vantage points in North Sydney. This means only residents who live inside the zone, their guests, and those with confirmed bookings at venues such as restaurants, hotels or bars within the area will be allowed in. Those with confirmed bookings, and residents, will be able to download a New Year’s Eve Pass from Service NSW. Passes will be checked prior to entry into the Green Zone area. Anyone who does not have a New Year's Eve Pass will not be allowed to enter. A designated Yellow Zone will also be established around the Green Zone and people looking to gather in this area in large numbers may be subject to move-on Police powers.
On New Year’s Eve, public transport will run regularly with some additional services. Find the green dots and wear a mask to stay COVID safe when travelling on the public transport network.
WILL ROADS IN THE SYDNEY CBD BE CLOSED? To allow those with restaurant or venue bookings move safely around the Sydney CBD and practise physical distancing, some road closures will need to be put be in place.
Have a safe and wonderful New Year's Eve. and we look forward to a better 2021 with new hope, with what's been a very trying year for all of us.
Warmest wishes to you and your family this holiday season. As your local Member of Parliament, I am here to help. Please contact my office if we can assist with any Federal Government issues.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA - PART 4 The life of Sir Edward Knox, the founder of Colonial Sugar Refineries (CSR) is really remarkable. At first glance today’s reader might say, “colonial” – isn’t that exploitative? and “sugar” – isn’t that an industry guilty of “black-birding”, the practice of bringing kanakas from the Pacific Islands and effectively enslaving them? Let’s not be too hasty. A closer look at Edward Knox, a parishioner of St Mark’s Church and others like him, reveals that they shaped modern industries; and, when judged by the standards of their time, they actually significantly improved the living standards of all involved in their enterprises. Knox, in particular, was a self-made man who coped with adversity. In a world of great uncertainty, not only did he prosper, but he supported and led others to flourish. His highly principled behaviour and his deep religious faith created valuable industries, thousands of jobs and pioneered fair and just industrial practices. Edward Knox was born in 1819 in Helsingor, Denmark. After commercial training in Denmark and in his uncle's London merchant house, he decided to try his luck in Australia, arriving in February 1840.
In 1855 he started the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. (CSR) owning one third of its capital and he remained associated with it until his death. After a meteoric start, the company and Knox himself were almost ruined when he departed for Europe and left the direct management of the company. Only by his return was he able to steady the ship and establish a vertically integrated sugar milling and refining operation which became the dominant sugar company in Australia and beyond. CSR today has become a major conglomerate expanding internationally into building products. As an astute financier, Knox grew CSR by acquisition and tough competition. By the early 1860’s he had resettled his family of four sons and four daughters in Sydney; returned his business to prosperity; become a

Through hard work and good connections he progressed, becoming involved with the Australian Sugar Company and acquiring assets from astute commercial deals. At the age of 26, he became a director of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney in 1845, acting as Manager from 1847 to 1851 and remaining a director until his death in 1901. Logo: www.csr.com.au

While Edward Knox’s business acumen was highly valued in finance and commerce, he extended his talents to co-founding the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Carrington Convalescent Home and assisting many other benevolent institutions and activities over the term of his life. A LUXURY CLASSIC: MERCEDES S SERIES EDGECLIFF AUTOMOTIVE

COOPER PARK GARAGE
104 MANNING RD, WOOLLAHRA 9327 3774 www.cooperparkgarage.com.au
How cool is your car? Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself. Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your air-conditioning and on-going ozone protection. When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. If you want to hear more about the laws of thermo dynamics, and those of us who know Flanders and Swann from years ago, they have a video on youtube which is worth checking out. Put Flanders and Swann Thermodynamics into your search engine and be prepared to enjoy the show.
In the last issue I introduced classic luxury - The BMW M Series. This issue is The S 350 series Mercedes classic luxury car. The series began as Sonderklasse, which means “special class” in German, and speaks for the revolutionary car that Mercedes produced. The S class is a classic, and fecall what makes a classic is that it provides an opportunity for brand new innovation, never been seen before features and a new direction for the car company. The S Series was all of that. It is the flagship for Mercedes-Benz and their response to the BMW innovative M Series. These two companies were seeking buyers in the same market place and whilst it is likely that there were not many devoted drivers who swapped allegiance, there were others who really had to decide which way to go. Overall 473,035 were made. All the cars in each series were simply beautiful to look at and wonderful to sit in and a dream to drive. A member of the genius team that created these very eye-pleasing cars was Friedrich Geiger. Amazingly he was trained as a cartwright, and was highly skilled at building wagons! In his spare time he was an artist. The Grand Mercs were designed by him. He was well known for his inspirational power, his ability to see a very big view, and his enormous creativity; when he added his iron will and commitment to discipline as extra qualities, some thing very special was going to happen. In 1973 when he retired, it was said of him that he shaped and influenced the formal vocabulary of Mercedes Benz passenger cars for four decades. We see his vast creativity in the concave slightly dipped roof of the SL R107 series which many of us loved with passion. He created a few problems for the manufacturing group when he wanted the boot lid to mirror the roof which of course, happened.
These S-class Mercs came with increased levels of comfort, equipment and performance. For the first time in Mercedes history, safety was placed above the styling viewpoint. For example they had padded door trim around the windows, a heavily padded steering wheel (later replaced by an airbag), safety padding on the dashboard, headrests with a centre depression to hold the passenger’s head in a more central position during a rear impact, rounded body shapes to lessen pedestrian injuries and the body structure designed with crumple zones for safety in head on collisions. The series has both active safety (accident avoidance) and passive safety features (collision protection). It had a collapsible steering column, a strengthened occupants cell and enhanced occupant protection during rollovers. The seat belts tighten when the car determines there will be impact. The engine slides under the occupants in a head-on collision. Discover where they went then with thoughts of safety – they designed the S600 Guard – an armoured car, which protects precious beings and a few naughty folk (I imagine), in 90 countries. It can withstand military-grade small arms fire, hand grenade
schrapnel. It has run-flat tyres (why don’t we all have them, I ask you?). It can withstand explosive devices, the gas tank self-seals, and the car has an alarm system for endangered passengers. The windscreen weighs 130K – yours weighs maybe 13K. It will find and put out a fire , and the system detects which type of fire extinguisher to use and where it is on the body of the car. That is just a small selection of what this thinking car can do to protect its passengers. It was also built for your Chauffer to drive and the driver has access to numerous first aid devices in the car. When you buy one, you and your Chauffer are trained in how this special car works. Merc says it is a superman car in a Clark Kent suit. Mercedes and BMW came to the market with BMW slightly earlier. The polite battle for sales is still around today. One was born from racing cars, the other, like Topsy, just was. One thing is sure, both these cars which launched a series still going 70 years on, are beautifully designed and built and will take you on an excellent ride. Peg Thatcher

The Hanging Gardens of Paddington The stunning Paddington Reservoir Gardens look like a combination of Roman ruins and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Sitting opposite two other local landmarks on Oxford St, the Paddington Town Hall and Post Office, with Juniper Hall – another fine 19th century building – nearby, this historic structure re-opened in its current form in 2009. Now an open space with a sunken garden, it is enjoyed by the public as a venue for a variety of community uses – including weddings, markets, art and photo exhibitions, and film festivals – and is a fascinating place to explore.
HISTORY
prepared a Conservation Management Plan and council commissioned JMD design and TZG Architects to adapt and restore the reservoir. The project was conceived of as a public garden over three levels, and the result interprets the 19th-century water infrastructure in an engaging way, resulting in dramatic spaces and light playing across the remnants of historic walls and vaults. Original brick, timber and iron fixtures were salvaged while vibrant graffiti art was preserved in the eastern chamber.
Completed in 1866, the reservoir accepted water from the Botany Swamps pumping station to supply parts of Sydney. Prior to that, elevated suburbs of Sydney had been serviced by wells and a water-cart service.
The sunken garden features a pond of contemplation which reflects the ruined fragment of vaulted roof above, whilst a raised walkway and wide boardwalks offers easy access and views around the edges.
In 1877, a second chamber was added to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding city. However, following completion of the larger Centennial Park Reservoir, the facility was decommissioned in 1899.
The small plaza along the western edge includes a restored fountain and the remnant of a sandstone wall from a 19th century church.
Until its closure in 1990 due to roof collapse, the reservoir had various uses, including as a workshop, government storage facility and petrol station. During the 2003 amalgamation with South Sydney Council, the City of Sydney acquired the derelict reservoir and park. A Plan of Management was adopted by council in 2004 and in 2006, Tanner and Associates

The project team’s exemplary work resulted in national and international awards for heritage, landscape architecture and urban design, and the reservoir is listed on the NSW Heritage Register. The gardens are accessible, and entry is free. Paula Towers

Nico Tjoelker commenced his one-year St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point Organ Scholarship in August 2020 and is passionate about his vocation.
Nico has been interested in music his whole life (23 years!) and began playing the organ and piano when he was 11 years old. He moved to Australia from Texas in 2011 at age 14, and immediately began organ lessons with Philip Swanton, who has been his teacher ever since. “As an organist and church musician, my mission in life is to facilitate Christian worship through sacred music. Having just graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, I am still at the very beginning of my career, and hope to continue building upon my professional skills as a musician through experiences like this scholarship at St Mark’s. When I’m not playing for church services, my aim as a musician is to share the joy of
music through activities such as playing concerts (in normal times), teaching and composing” says Nico.
Nico is very appreciative of the St Mark’s Organ Scholarship opportunity. “St Mark’s is the first time I have been an organ scholar at an Anglican church. It has been fascinating to learn about the traditions and music of the Anglican church ‘up close’, and also to discover that there is quite a lot in common, musically and otherwise, between the Christian denominations.” Nico plays for the weekly Sunday 8am services, as well as, extra services around Easter and Christmas, and fills in for weddings and funerals for the Director of Music, when required.

WAVERLEY COUNCIL’S BEACH AMBASSADORS
Meet the newly-appointed 'ambassadors' keeping Bondi and neighbouring beaches COVID-safe. That means gatherings of no more than 30 people and keeping a towel length distance from others while using beaches. As well as patrolling beaches, the ambassadors will gently oversee social distancing and group gathering requirements at selected parks and reserves, the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk, picnic tables, BBQs, outdoor seating areas, fitness stations and playgrounds.
Fiona, which is now the Ascham Junior School in Darling Point, was once the family home of Sir Edward Knox.
Introducing the ambassadors at a press call at Bondi beach, Mayor Paula Masselos urged beachgoers to be vigilant. “We can all enjoy our beautiful parks and beaches when everyone cooperates,” she said. “If a beach or other outdoor space looks busy, please come back another time or use that time to visit one of our many local businesses.” Councillor Masselos said information on the crowd status of major beaches was available on the Waverley Council website and social media channels. There are also advisory messages at bus stops, train stations and on main roads.

Hello Everyone,

Birrell St
Porter St te R
1
Detour to 54 Lawson Street, which was once a scene of the violent murder of two policeman in 1931 at the hands of crazed gunman, John Thomas Kennedy.
7 Heading towards Bondi Junction, passing Birrell St, I stop at Porter St..Two decades ago, Porter Street served as the backdrop for an unlikely love affair, where then 28-year-old Mary Donaldson got to know Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, after meeting him at the Slip Inn, Darling Harbour...the rest is history.

3
On the corner of Brisbane St and Bronte Rd is Super Cheap Auto, once The Star Theatre, opened 1917 it was the largest and most popular of the the Bondi Junction theatres. It was demolished ten years later. The second Star Theatre opened in 1928, seating 2,400 patrons and operated by Olympic Theatres. Hoyts bought it in 1935, and architect Charles Bohringer redesigned the cinema in an Art Deco style. Hoyts Star Theatre was closed on Feb 8, 1977 with “Salon Kitty”. Hoyts sold it, and it reopened as the Star Rock Concert, showing movies as well. It lasted only a year and was closed in 1978 and demolished in 1981. A plaque is situated on the footpath outside.
4
Just past Super Cheap Auto is a sculpture by Camie Lyons, who is a Sydney-based artist that works across a variety of mediums including sculpture, painting and drawing. Lyons’ artistic practice is largely inspired by and incorporates her intuition and experience as a contemporary dancer, as she explores the free-flowing possibility of lines, form and movement created by the human body.
5
Walking down Ebley street..you can't miss Spotlight...there is a plaque on the footpath at the entrance...showing the history of this site. Once The Centennial Roller Skating Rink opened at 65 Ebley Street in 1912, the year after that it was gutted by fire. It was also the film production studios of Australasian Films, Cinesound, Australian Television Enterprises, Visatone Television and Ajax Films, until its use as the retail premises of Norman Ross Discounts (in Metro Storage Carpark ..a ghost sign can still be seen) and Keith Lord. Famous Australian films were made there, including "40,000 Horsemen", ''Smithy and "On Our Selection''.
I pass Bondi Vet...made famous by Vetenarian, Chris Brown who now is a television presenter and author. He is best known for the television series Bondi Vet, which began screening in 2009. He hosts The Open Road with Doctor Chris on CBS. In Australia, he appears on The Living Room, I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and Chris & Julia's Sunday Night Takeaway, and is a regular guest panellist on The Project. Crossing the road I head down Mill Hill Rd. At 16 Mill Hill Rd, St Barnabas Church of England, has been converted into three townhouses. Built 1902 in ecclesiastical Gothic style, was the first Anglican church in Bondi Junction and deconsecrated 1986. The house on the corner of Mill Hill Rd and Oxford St was used as the Rectory. On the site opposite the Rectory in Oxford St was a Toll-gate built in 1869 to catch the traffic which was avoiding the toll at Ebley St and Bronte Rd corner.

Near the corner of Oxford St and Mill Hill Rd there is a plaque on the footpath about Hough's Windmill, which Mill Hill Rd takes its name from. The windmill operated by Henry Hough 1841-1881 on his ten acre 'Hope Farm'.
I hope you are all feeling positive, things are definitely getting better. Although we have been in lockdown I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. It's almost Christmas. If you need guidance or confirmation please phone me on 0414 273 104.

shortly become a pop-up shop where Opal and Suez will try to sell the incinerator scheme to locals. Wearing “No Matraville Incinerator” T-shirts, protestors brandished freshly-printed posters and a diagram showing where the toxic plume will go. Randwick City’s Mayor, Danny Said, who also attended the protest, said: “There are absolutely no community benefits. This area has copped more than its share of industrial pollution for decades. Enough is enough!” Member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, agreed. He said: “The Port Botany area is one of the most polluted areas of the country and we don’t need any more damaging emissions spewing over our community.”
NO TOXIC INCINERATOR! A storm of protest has broken out over a proposal to build a waste incinerator which would vent toxic fumes over Matraville and the surrounding area. Local politicians, businesses and residents – some of whose homes are less than 150 metres from the planned incinerator site – are fuming over the proposal, which bypasses the local government approval process.
The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. They want to build a 65 metre high smoke stack to disperse the fumes.
Opposition to the proposal is being organised by the Matraville Precinct and led by chemical engineer, Chris Hanson, who started the No More Toxic Incinerators pages on Facebook and Twitter, along with a dedicated web page.
Mr Hanson said the incinerator would provide steam for Opal’s paper mill by burning 165,000 tonnes of “non-recyclable” waste each year – 35,000 tonnes of which will contain PVC, which creates highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins when burnt. He said the plan was not only a danger to public health, but did not make economic sense. “Waste incineration is the most polluting and expensive way to make energy,” Mr Hanson led a community protest outside the former CBA offices in Matraville, which will
Noel says thank you to the community
Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.” Young mother Rebecca Vinny lives 130 metres from the proposed incinerator site. “It’s insane,” she said. “I have three children and the harmful health effects of this kind of pollution might not show up for years. And what about property prices? How are you going to sell your one and a half million dollar house when it’s next to a toxic incinerator?”
Tony Maguire
The man whose name is synonymous with Matraville, Noel D’Souza, is about to retire. Well, kind of.
His good works have extended way beyond the pharmacy counter. For the past six years he has been a Randwick City Councillor and was Mayor of Randwick from 2015 to 2017.
He has sold his twin chemist shops on either side of Bunnerong Rd, but will remain active behind the pharmacy counter as a consultant if required. Meanwhile, he is looking forward to the next state election, when he will have another shot at winning the State Seat of Maroubra as an Independent.
“I want to extend a big thank you to all the members of the community who have supported my shops over the last 35 years,” he said. Of course, as many locals will tell you, Noel himself is a pillar of support who always goes that extra mile to help people, particularly the elderly and disadvantaged.
The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. Opposition to the proposal is being organised by the Matraville Precinct and led by chemical engineer, Chris Hanson, who started the No More Toxic Incinerators pages on Facebook and Twitter, along with a dedicated web page.
He was recently honoured by France, which has appointed him a Knight in the National Order of Légion d’Honneur for his work on securing the La Perouse Museum for the Randwick community and creating a place where French, Australian and Indigenous culture can be celebrated. “There are many things that need to be done such the campaigns against the cruise terminal and waste incinerator,” Noel said. “I am much more engaged with the community than the sitting member and will achieve better outcomes.”

PHOTOS CAPTURE ‘LA PER’ LIFE IN 1950s
Most people remember photographer Max Dupain as someone who captured timeless moments from the streets of Sydney in the 1950s (plus the occasional sun-bronzed Aussie reclining on the beach – his most famous image is "Sunbaker"). But his lens also recorded life on the La Perouse peninsula. He took a series of recently-unearthed photos in 1953-4, around the time Dupain was commissioned by Caltex to take a series of pictures of its petrol refinery at Kurnell, on the other side of Botany Bay.
Dupain would catch the ferry from La Perouse to Kurnell. Between the La Perouse tram terminus and the ferry wharf, he would find himself loading his camera and taking shots of people and places from this then-rustic outpost of the city. For decades, the La Perouse and Kurnell pictures lay unseen in the NSW State Library. But now they have been rediscovered and are being showcased at an exhibition in Randwick Council’s La Perouse Museum. The exhibition, called The Caltex Story, runs from Friday December 4 to Sunday March 14. Opening times are Wednesday and Friday 10am-2pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm.
Most of the pictures are of La Perouse, with a smaller proportion showing features of the Caltex plant. “It’s quite a beautiful juxtaposition,” says museum curator Roxanne Fea. “The bustling, industrial landscape of the Caltex Refinery at Kurnell alongside a very quiet, peaceful La Perouse.” See moments from past life on the La Perouse peninsula, such as a 1953 picture titled Unknown Woman and Child, La Perouse, showing a mother holding the hand of her toddler in front of the watchtower. “A sort of Wuthering Heights at La Perouse,” says Ms Fea. “The cluster of ramshackle buildings around the tower were destroyed in a tragic fire just four years later, so this photo also feels like a
memento mori – a record of a time and place that has since changed dramatically.” Other pictures show architectural features that caught Dupain’s eye during the building of the Caltex refinery, such as a work titled Refinery Construction (1954). This shows the geodesic framework of a massive fuel storage tank taking shape. As well as the black and white pictures, the State Library is supplying two of Dupain’s cameras plus some of his developing equipment to the exhibition. A wish from the heart
Carys is seven years old and has leukemia. Since April she has been a patient at Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH), near her Randwick home. It’s been a rough ride for Carys, her mum Laura and her dad Mark, as well as her loving little brother Cohle, aged four. One of her most heartfelt wishes this year was to spend time with dogs, and generous nursing staff and community members made this wish come true. Here she is with Alfie, who is part of the Connolly family. Wishes bring hope. For Christmas, Carys created a message of hope in her artwork made during an SCH Art Program workshop: “A wish for Christmas is a dream from the heart”. Carys is a gifted artist, and her work has featured several times this year in SCH publications and on the hospital walls. Her “Wish for Christmas” has been turned into a tote bag, a tea towel and a Christmas card, offered for sale along with cards bearing the artwork of other young hospital patients.
A WISH FOR A SMOOTHER RIDE
And Carys has another wish too. To get to the hospital for her last day of treatment, she’d love to be picked up from her home in a convertible. A four-seater, so her mum and dad can accompany her. The date needs to be flexible, because she hasn’t always been well enough to continue treatment. If you can help with the convertible, please email miffymoo@hotmail.com

WOOLLAHRA
We want your ideas for new and improved public and open spaces The challenges of 2020 have demonstrated the importance of our public spaces including our parks, beaches, bushland and streets - to our wellbeing.
The NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program will fund new and/or improved public and open spaces that will contribute to the health, wellbeing and economic growth of our community well beyond a COVID-19 recovery period. Council has some ideas about how we could use this funding, and we’d love to know what you think about our suggested projects, where our next public space should be built and also hear about your own ideas. Provide feedback and share your suggestions via our survey at: yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/publicspaces until December 18.
Kitchen to compost
About half of all food waste in the Woollahra area is sent to landfill each week, but you can help to reduce that amount and create compost instead. It’s as simple as placing your food scraps into your green-lid bin rather than your red-lid garbage bin. To help get you started with composting, Council is offering a free kitchen caddy or set of compostable bags for your food scraps until January 31. For more details, visit: woollahra. nsw.gov.au/kitchentocompost-register.
Woollahra Garden Awards winners
Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2020 Woollahra Garden Awards, Council’s annual competition established to encourage gardening and community members whose green spaces help to enhance the local environment. High-quality design and inventiveness and many hours of love and dedication were evident in all category winners, including Large, Small, Verge and Sustainable gardens.
COUNCIL NEWS 23
WAVERLEY
RANDWICK
Bringing the graveyard to life
Ensuring COVID safety on Randwick beaches
The consultants put together a report called The Cemetery Strategic Business Plan that was tabled at a recent meeting of Council. The report stresses the cemetery’s value as a community asset, with potential for events such as workshops in its heritage-listed buildings. The report also called for “enhanced signage and interpretation options, improved tours and access to information.”
“Two hours is a long time in the sun, please don’t extend your stay at the beach, and try and come outside the peak times,” said the Mayor.
A report by a firm of consultants has put forward a range of ideas to make Waverley Cemetery come alive as a community hub.
Waverley Cemetery contains the graves of many famous Australians, such as poets Henry Lawson and Dorothea Mackellar, Olympic swimming champion Sarah "Fanny" Durack, Archibald Prize founder Jules François Archibald and Sydney crime figure George Freeman.
Literary award winners
Waverley Council has announced the winners of this year’s Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award.
Rebecca Giggs won the $20,000 first prize with her book Fathoms: The World in the Whale (Scribe Publications). This blends natural history, science and philosophy in a deeply-researched book about whales, taking us on board a Japanese whaling ship plus giving the reader many happier close-up experiences of this warm-blood leviathan of the deep.
Limit your time at the beach to give other people a COVID-safe spot on the sand. That was one of the messages from Randwick mayor Danny Said as he fronted a press conference alongside local police Superintendent Rohan Cramsie.
Superintendent Cramsie said that as well as policing COVID safety alongside lifeguards, rangers and Randwick’s newly-appointed beach ambassadors, officers will target alcohol-related crime. Assisting in the fight against COVID on Randwick’s beaches will be four drones to monitor beach numbers. Council is also installing CCTV cameras at a number of previously-unmonitored beaches including Frenchmans, Yarra Bay and Gordons Bay. Another step is being taken at Little Bay – several steps, actually! Little Bay’s beach is accessed via a fairly narrow set of wooden steps. If you are heading down and someone else is ascending, or vice versa, you almost rub shoulders. The Council is building a second stairway. There will be one-way traffic, with one stairway for entering the beach, the other for exiting.
Coogee Bay Road gets activated!
Outdoor diners on Coogee Bay Road have more space and they might find themselves being serenaded by buskers under a $150,000 project funded by Randwick Council and the NSW government.
Winner of the Nib People’s Choice Prize ($1,000) was The Deceptions by Suzanne Leal (Allen & Unwin), a gripping novel set in World War 2 Czechoslovakia where the plot revolves around long-buried family secrets coming to the surface. Now in its 19th year, The Nib Award is administered and presented annually by Waverley Council with the generous support of Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran and the ongoing assistance of community partner Gertrude and Alice Bookshop and Café.
Paddington Community Garden, a wonderful space many local residents and families have taken to visiting for their wellbeing and the opportunity to connect with others this year, took out the Best Garden(Overall) and Sustainability Awards.
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said: “The Nib Award is one of Waverley Council’s most prestigious Arts offerings, so I thank Mark and Evette Moran for their ongoing support of the Nib. I also congratulate all the winners and shortlisted candidates.
For further information on the Awards and category winners, visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/gardenawards.
"During this COVID-19 pandemic, books have become even more of an invaluable commodity. They provide comfort, strength and inspiration, and give us the opportunity to learn something new as we all spend more time at home, or in isolation.”
Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! As we approach the end of this tumultuous year, I wish to thank everyone for doing their bit to keep our community safe. As we head into summer, it is important that we continue to be COVIDsafe, keeo physical distancing when appropriate and practice good personal hygiene in order to keep our community safe and our economy open.
WISHING EVERYONE HAPPY HOLIDAYS
I would like to wish you all a very happy holidays. After a challenging year, I hope you find some time to relax and enjoy the holiday season with friends and family.
NSW BUDGET
The Treasurer has outlined a plan to phase our stamp duty by the 2024/25 financial year, and introduce a land tax. There will be a consultation phase, so I want to hear from you, the community, about your thoughts on these changes. Please be in touch with my office to provide your feedback or if you would like further information In 2018, Randwick Boys and Girls High Schools were promised major and much needed upgrades by the NSW Government. Two years on, no money has been allocated in the Budget and no works have begun. Every public primary school in the electorate of Coogee is at or over capacity. The Government needs to start addressing the issues of overcrowding in public schools and the lack of investment in public education infrastructure in the Eastern Suburbs. The Government had also failed to allocate any funding for the promised Service NSW centre in Randwick. I will continue to fight to ensure these promises are delivered.
COMMUNITY SURVEY
It’s called the Coogee Bay Road Shared Village Project. Randwick Council came up with a third of the funds and the other 100K came from the state government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program. Opening the Bay Road makeover with member for Coogee, Marjorie O’Neill, Mayor Danny Said welcomed the freeing-up of space. “The Coogee Bay Road Shared Village project provides more space for outdoor dining as well as additional space to help shoppers and pedestrians practice social distancing,” he said. The downside of the project, if you happen to be a driver wanting to head ocean-wards down Coogee Bay Road, is …well, you can’t. As part of the temporary three month activation program, traffic on Coogee Bay Road is now one-way heading west with the previous travel lane now used to provide more space for shoppers, pedestrians and diners.
I want to hear from you! Please scan the QR Code to complete my community survey:
