Whether you are planning a celebration at home or in your local community, remember to ensure the safety of your family and friends.

In the case of Australia what we did about COVID was remarkable. While countries around the world are still counting new cases of more than 10,000 a day, Australia has counted an average of less than 25 during December of this year. Compare that with Belgium, a much smaller country, with 4,978 new cases recorded in just one day (December 13). Judged by success in containing COVID, Australia is ranked 5th following Taiwan, Singapore, New Zealand and Japan. Those following Australia were South Korea and China. It is notable that the top five are islands and, South Korea, a virtual island.

Meet the newly-appointed 'ambassadors' keeping Bondi and neighbouring beaches COVID-safe. That means gatherings of no more than 30 people and keeping a towel length distance from others while using beaches.

As well as patrolling beaches, the ambassadors will gently oversee social distancing and group gathering requirements at selected parks and reserves, the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk, picnic tables, BBQs, outdoor seating areas, fitness stations and playgrounds. Introducing the ambassadors at a press call at Bondi beach, Mayor Paula Masselos urged beachgoers to be vigilant. “We can all enjoy our beautiful parks and beaches when everyone cooperates,” she said. “If a beach or other outdoor space looks busy, please come back another time or use that time to visit one of our many local businesses.” Councillor Masselos said information on the crowd status of major beaches was available on the Waverley Council website and social media channels. There are also advisory messages at bus stops, train stations and on main roads.

Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.”

Like Goldilocks, it seems we found the sweetspot where COVID was managed and the impact on the economy minimised. Not that there isn’t a huge amount of catching up to be done, and that the burden will be felt throughout 2021 and longer, but we have a sound foundation on which to build, with effective contact tracing, experience in minimising infection and an effective antiCOVID vaccine just around the corner.

And although the price has been high, COVID has brought benefits; we’re in the process of becoming more self sufficient, agile businesses have found better ways to do things, work from home people are moving to the country, global emissions have fallen, neighbours are friendlier, families are spending more time together, it’s even rumoured that household savings have increased, and that people are spending more time smelling roses.

According to Dr. Sidhu, dementia is more than just short-term loss, rather it's a gradual forgetfulness that changes a person entirely. While the disease affects people in different ways, it usually starts on the various domains of their day-to-day functioning. For example, most of the patients who visit Dr. Sidhu were well-educated individuals, who had noticed a change in their executive decision making. This means that they weren't making good investment decisions as they were doing two months ago. Another example are people who are having trouble completing daily tasks, from dressing appropriately, making a cup of tea, to balancing while walking.

Another sign of developing dementia is inattentiveness or losing the ability to focus. This usually leads trouble doing integrated activities of living, like shopping, banking, or even using the phone. The third is the normal history of dementia, which geriatricians would call as Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia or BPSD. Patients who have these symptoms would behave or act irrationally.

For example, get frustrated, paranoid, or would even show physical aggression over something they wouldn't normally be upset about.

DR. SIDHU'S REMINDERS

If your family member is diagnosed with dementia and has shown the symptoms above, keep in mind that to not take their actions personally. Their anger and other

irrational behavior are the effects of the disease. Dr. Sidhu remind people that "they are not the same mother, father, husband, or wife you met or gave birth to." You might want to develop communication strategies to deal with the situation.

Why independent finest example of military architecture hearing advice is important

VICTORIA BARRACKS - the

One of the best-known examples of military architecture in Australia sits on Oxford St, right next to Paddington Town Hall – Victoria Barracks.

Also arguably one of the finest examples of military barracks in the world, not surprisingly, Victoria Barracks is on the Commonwealth Heritage List. In continuous use from when it was built until the present day, it is now home to the Headquarters of Forces Command. Constructed by convicts between 1841 and 1849, mainly from locally quarried sandstone, the first building completed was the Officers' Quarters in 1842. Then the Garrison Hospital was built in 1845 to accommodate 36 patients while the Main Barrack Block was finished in 1846, to house 650 soldiers. Victoria Barracks were designed by Lieutenant Colonel George Barney of the Royal Engineers, who was the first Colonial Engineer. Barney’s impressive resume includes the design and construction of such iconic Sydney building projects as Circular Quay, Fort Denison, and the convict barracks on Cockatoo Island. The first regiment to occupy the barracks was the 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment. Arriving in January 1846, the regiment returned to Hobart briefly but came back to Sydney by popular demand in 1848. Upon their arrival, the soldiers were “showered in flowers” as they marched from Darlinghurst, (accompanied by) cheering and flag-waving, the tribute recognised “as one of the finest to the British soldier recorded in the military annals of New South Wales”. In 1847, the Barrack Master's Residence was built, as well as the 25-cell District Military Prison which now houses the Army Museum of New South Wales. Well worth a visit, the Museum features army uniforms from Colonial times, the Boer War, WWI and WWII as well as many medals of interest including Victoria Crosses, Campaign Medals, and Royal honours. On November 1, 1848, the first parade at Victoria Barracks took place and the Barracks became and remained a premier military training site. The barracks were occupied by British troops up until 1870 when they were taken over by the New South Wales colonial forces.

Following Federation in 1901, the barracks property was transferred to the Commonwealth and Victoria Barracks housed the headquarters responsible for administering the military, including the Royal Military College of Australia (1931-6) and the Command and Staff School (1938-1940). Not surprisingly, it was Administrative Headquarters during the First and Second World Wars.

An ACCC 2017 report (March 2017) shone a spotlight on issues regarding the dispensing of hearing aids in Australia revealing that the for-profit government and corporately owned hearing clinics that set sales targets, pay commissions or clinical bonuses based on hearing aid sales and have preferred manufacturer arrangements linked to volume discounts. Commissions or bonuses contribute to pressure selling by employees.

We do not provide commissions or bonuses to staff. Edgecliff Hearing audiologists provide INDEPENDENT and EXPERT audiology advice. We are experts in both hearing aids and implantable hearing solutions.

Using a digital camera, he captures subtle details of reflections on water, as he kayaks through Sydney Harbour and more recently the waterways in the USA, the UAE and Portugal. Ralph was diagnosed with keratoconus; the slow deterioration of muscles in the cornea (the surface of the eye). Subsequently a corneal transplant saved the sight in his right eye whilst his left eye is still deteriorating. As a result, Ralph’s rare condition allows him to see the world uniquely. We continue to explore the important contributions of past parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point. THOMAS WARE SMART

Thomas Smart was one of the most unlikely individuals to have a major influence in the early years of New South Wales. The son of emancipated convict parents, he was born in Sydney in 1810 and was therefore a ‘currency lad’, from a very modest background. He prospered, however, through industry and drive and impressive financial acumen. Smart’s ability was proven in his early years as a draper in partnership with Andrew Oliver and then in 1836 on his own account as an auctioneer and general agent in George Street, Sydney. Very soon he had amassed a large fortune and he had acquired substantial pasturing property in the Cobargo area.

commercial ventures with leading families. He was known as a generous man and offered his coach house as the original St Mark’s Chapel of Ease in 1847 which preceded the church opening in 1854. Smart together with Thomas Sutcliffe Mort and Thomas Whistler Smith were the original churchwardens and were known as the ‘Three Toms’. The astounding fact was that they were all in their thirties at the time. In 1842, Thomas Smart married his former partner’s widow and was a caring father to three of their own children and his three step-children. He was extremely generous to the church and among other donations in 1862 he gifted new church bells for the wedding of his step-daughter, at a society wedding which featured no less than 20 bridesmaids.

Thomas Ware Smart Inset Photo: The eastern face of the ‘Mona’ mansion today in Mona Road

Abutting his home he built a magnificent art gallery which he opened to the public. It housed works by Raphael, Murillo, Velasquez, Rubens and Gainsborough, that he had acquired on a trip to England.

In 1841 Smart purchased an original parcel of land in Darling Point from James Dunlop, upon which he built his residence, ‘Mona’. His land (15 acres) was bounded by Rushcutters Bay, up New South Head Road, along Darling Point Road to Loftus Street. After his death in the 1880’s the property was subdivided and intersected by Mona Road. The original mansion still stands at 38 Mona Road and is divided into apartments.

Thomas Smart was a highly respected businessman and was Chairman or Director of many joint stock companies including being a founding director of the AMP Society. He was also active in political life serving four years in the Legislative Council and then, after returning from three years in England, representing Glebe in the Legislative Assembly in 1860-1869.

As his wealth grew, Smart became accepted by Sydney society and he formed great friendships and conducted

40 YEARS APART 1965 Austin Morris Mini & 2005 BMW Mini

The 1965 Mini is the best selling British car in history – 5.3 million cars produced. The brief was to produce a car 10 x 4 x 4ft and 6ft of the 10ft was for passengers – an impossible task at the time. Designer and builder of an armoured car, an amphibious tank and a motorised wheelbarrow, Alexander Issigonis took on the task. His ground breaking innovations are still in the other BMW Mini in the picture built in 2005, like front wheel drive, a transverse engine, phenomenal space, wheels efficiently at the side and much more. The first one was launched with great fanfare by a magician, who held a crowd spellbound as he “magically” unpacked this tiny car containing four adults and all their holiday stuff. At Edgecliff Automotive, we have an original Mini, which is well cared for... people who walk past the workshop, usually go straight to the Mini ignoring the exotic cars; Porsches, BMW’s, Mercedes and Audi’s.

Facts

Following the official launch of the Mini in 1959, it wasn't long after when Morris Minor Mini became the first British car ever to sell more than 1,000,000 automobiles.

Looking after your car's air-conditioning system Inside the system the pressure can remain high whilst the temperature is reduced. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself.

Over 5.3 million classic Minis were released up until the year 2000, and due to this fact, the Mini has become the most popular British vehicle in the history of the car industry. In 1991, Autocar magazine voted Mini "The greatest car of all time". The record for number of people crammed into a Mini is 27, and the largest line of Mini drivers ever to form a convoy is 299. Racing driver, Stirling Moss, was banned for a year back in 1961 for speeding in a Mini while testing it for a Sunday paper.

Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location.

COOPER PARK GARAGE

Heat will always move from a hot material to a cold one making heating and air-conditioning possible; energy must flow from a higher state (warm) to a lower state (cold).

Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your air-conditioning and on-going ozone protection. When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. Josh (Edgecliff Automotive) and Jeff (Cooper Park Garage) recommend an annual check and a service every 2 years. Statistics say that in a new vehicle there is a 20-30% loss of gas over a 2 year period.

Holocaust survivors return to the Museum to tell their important stories

After many months of staying home, not being able to share their stories of trauma, resilience and hope, Holocaust survivors are finally returning to Darlinghurst’s Sydney Jewish Museum to share their experiences with visitors.

Holocaust survivors established the Sydney Jewish Museum in 1992, as they wanted a space to share their stories and give history a voice. Their voices remain at the centre of the Museum’s exhibitions and public programs. The Museum’s central permanent exhibition, The Holocaust, features many personal stories and artefacts from Sydney’s Holocaust survivor community. Before COVID-19 hit, survivors would give weekly talks in the Museum to student groups and weekend visitors. However, since March, survivors exchanged letters with young school students in a pen pal project. Many have also given talks via Zoom. But nothing compares to the experience of meeting a survivor and learning of their experiences in person. This summer, the Sydney Jewish Museum is excited to announce that Holocaust survivors are returning to the Museum to tell their stories and enrich visitors’ experiences. Holocaust survivor Ana De Leon. Photograph by Katherine Griffiths, Courtesy Sydney Jewish Museum

Each Wednesday in January, a survivor will be available in The Holocaust exhibition to

talk about the history, their story and the personal artefacts that they have on display in the exhibition. Throughout December and January, survivors will also be giving talks in the Museum’s auditorium, where they will give details of their life stories. These are ticketed talks, and included in the price is admission to all of the Museum’s exhibitions. On Tuesday, January 12, Holocaust survivor Ana De Leon will tell of her experiences of rising antisemitism in Yugoslavia, where she grew up. Ana was eight years old when her world changed; she was no longer allowed to play with her non-Jewish friend Camilla, and had to leave her school. Ana and her family were confined to a ghetto for three months, and in June 1944, they were pushed into cattle cars and taken to a transit camp before relocation to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After liberation, Ana spent six months in Displaced Persons camps in Germany. She lived in Yugoslavia until immigrating to Australia in 1971. To book your place to hear the life stories of Ana and other Holocaust survivors, visit sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au Please check the website before booking in case of last minute changes due to COVID-19.

Farm flourishes in White City

In only a year, a forgotten piece of land behind Paddington’s White City tennis courts which had been over-run with discarded old tyres, weeds and rubbish has blossomed into a fruitful urban farm.

Adamama (“mother earth” in Hebrew), an Australian example of the Jewish farming movement that started in America with a focus on sustainability, has attracted over 200 people, especially through working bees held every second Sunday. It took farm manager Mitch Burnie a week to rehabilitate the unwanted area and prepare it for planting – including removing over 200 tennis balls – and for Adamama to become Sydney’s first Jewish urban educational farm, with the support of the Shalom cultural and educational institute. Following its establishment in December 2019, Adamama farm endured a baptism of fire. “During the bushfires there was smoke everywhere and dust on the plants. And during the drought we couldn’t water properly,” says Mitch. “It didn’t rain for two months then there all of a sudden there was a storm which ruined half of the crops.” Now it’s thriving. “There’s capsicum, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes, bok choy, eggplant,

spinach and many herbs,” Mitch happily reports. “We have native corn, eucalyptus and tea trees.” The renewed interest in farming is a novel way for people to connect with their local community. What also attracts him – and many others – especially in Covid times, is being outdoors: “We spend so much time indoors, and I like being able to connect food, culture, history, and tradition in this space.” It’s often the first time people have gardened. This was Evie Hymann’s experience: “I had a bad track record with plants, trying to keep them alive so this has been a really fun way to explore gardening. I’ve met a lot of new people and everyone has been friendly.”

Regular helper Emma Segal, who’s been coming all year to help with the farm, feels it’s “a wonderful and valuable community asset. Being in the garden and working in the environment” is what appeals most. “I loved growing our own vegetables,” Odi Reuveni exclaimed. “They really taste nice.” For Mitch, there’s also the self-sufficiency and communal sustainability angle, as well as helping people upskill. Along these lines, he introduced a pickling course in August – hoping to attract some interest but was happily surprised to receive almost three times the maximum number of 15 people from a variety of backgrounds and ages.

Through the whole process, the group was guided on how to prepare the soil, sow seeds, harvest then pickle. As another farm regular Orli Winton observed: “All of a sudden there were two really hot, sunny days – and there were just cucumbers everywhere! Amazing! They really sprung up. It was so exciting!” Over 1100 cucumbers were harvested in total and at the end of November, there was

a pre-sale of the jars: “In 12 hours we sold out our 100 jars through word of mouth and social media,” Mitch reports. Any funds raised are put back into the organisation, which is a collective, and he plans on running more pickling courses on a seasonal basis as well as using a variety of vegetables.

I begin this walk at Nielsen Park which has been associated with several colonial figures, including: William Wentworth, the Reeve family who built Greycliffe House estate and, mid-19th century architect and surveyor, John F. Hilly who designed Greycliffe and its outbuildings. As well as, Politician and philanthropist Hon. Edward Mason Hunt MLC and Alexander Dick, silversmith who built and expanded The Hermitage estate. William Notting, Secretary of the Harbour Foreshores Vigilance Committee and Park Trustee, who led the public move to have the area preserved, the Secretary of Lands, and Niels Nielsen who provided government support for the establishment of the park.

demolished in 1917 when Olola Ave was put through. The property was acquired by the NSW Government in 1910 administered by the Nielsen-Vaucluse House Trust coming under the control of the Historic Houses Trust in 1980.

4

Its later use of Greycliffe as an Infant Hospital saw a close association with paediatrician Dr Margaret Harper, whose work on infant diet, care and disease has remained highly influential.

2

Passing mansions and gardens along Coolong Rd, I stop by a beautiful bay called Vaucluse Beach. This beach is unique in that it is the only one in the Woollahra Municipality which is intact in that the stream entering it has not been altered by drainage works nor has the beach front been changed through land fill or retaining walls - it looks much like it did before urban development took place. Bordering the stream there are sandstone walls which would have supported a wooden bridge carrying traffic along 'Lower Vaucluse Rd' and over the stream before the present Wentworth Rd was put in place.

3

Opposite Vaucluse Beach is Vaucluse House on Wentworth Rd. The house was built between 1827 and the late 1830's by William Charles Wentworth incorporating the original cottage built in 1803 by Sir Henry Browne Hayes, the house was never finished. Wentworth left for England in 1853 and sold up all his personal effects returning only once in 1860-61 - after that, family members and tenants occupied the house. Significant buildings include the stables built around the same time incorporate some of the first Gothic styling in the colony and the laundry - the convict barracks stood on the hillside north east of and above the stables but were

At the cnr of Fitzwilliam and Wentworth Rds is the Vaucluse War Memorial. The memorial, a 12m high white painted flagpole on a sandstone base flanked by 75 mm bore canons, was dedicated on Oct 26, 1918. The plaque at the base of the memorial is inscribed 'A grateful tribute to the gallant men who fought for us in the Great War'.

I head towards Chapel Rd, where the Wentworth Mausoleum is located. It contains the remains of William Charles Wentworth (1790?-1872) And was built from 1872 to 1874 by Mansfield Brothers, architects. The property is owned by Anglican Church Property Trust and is managed by Sydney Living Museums as part of Vaucluse House.

5

6

My final stop is Parsley Bay, which was one small part of the Wentworth family’s 105 acre Vaucluse Estate, which remained in private ownership for a further eighty years. The bridge across 'Parsley Glen' was discussed as early as 1906. Vaucluse Council was considering the benefits of installing a footbridge across 'The Parsley Glen' to improve pedestrian access between the two shores of the Bay. A cable suspension bridge was constructed during 1910 at a cost of £500. The work was carried out using Council labour and the bridge built to the design of Edwin Sautelle, then Town Clerk and Engineer of Vaucluse. Sautelle was later an Alderman of the Council, serving as Mayor twice. The Reserve remains a popular place for picnic parties, and, since the 1970s, for weddings. It has also formed the backdrop for a number of films, commercials and television programs in recent decades. In ESL Ed 26 (Feb) I will be walking from Old South Head Rd, Vaucluse to New South Head Rd, Rose Bay. Stay well and safe.

ACTIVE AGEING

Active ageing is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years. Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow

them to stay in their home environment. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care aims to enable individuals to have positive selfbelief, agency and dignity which are also components of successful ageing (McIntyre, 2013). Evidence suggest that these factors allow individuals to cope better with serious health issues resulting in increased longevity (McIntyre, 2013). If you, or a loved one, value the idea of being positive and empowered in your later years please us a call on the number below, or visit our website for more information.

EASTERN SUBURBS FILMMAKER SHINES AT FLICKERFEST A young Eastern Suburbs actor makes his directorial debut in an 11-minute film being screened at this year’s Flickerfest. Benjamin Balte, 27, of Bellevue Hill, made Saving Daylight on a budget of less than $10,000 – and with the COVID epidemic providing a bit of luck by yielding a perfect location for filming. Saving Daylight is about a concierge, played by Nate Gothard, who has to change all the clocks in a hotel before daylight saving begins. It was shot at the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel in the city, which was closed to guests at the time because of COVID. “We were really lucky to have access to the Castlereagh but the downside was noise of jackhammers and earthmoving equipment from construction of the Metro line below the hotel,” said Benjamin. “However we were able to resolve the sound challenges in post-production and I am very proud of the final result. It’s a big thrill having it screened at Flickerfest.”

Saving Daylight is one of 200 short films being screened at the 30th annual Flickerfest, which takes place at Bondi from January 22-31. As well as entries from up and coming filmmakers like Benjamin, the program features works from more experienced teams who were able to attract funding. The Screen Australia-funded animated film Roborovski, for instance, was made by acclaimed actors Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Dev Patel, with Happy Feet writer John Collee assisting with the script. Other international entries include David, an American short film directed by Zach Woods and starring comedy legend Will Ferrell. It was the only American short film selected for screening at Cannes in 2020. Another highlight of the program is the official trailer for this year’s festival, an ode to Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge written & directed by Rebekah Jackson. Flickerfest started out as a low-key event held from a school in Balmain but soon moved to Bondi, which has been its home for the last 24 years. It is being held in the amphitheatre and

Catch some of the most innovative, provocative and wildly entertaining short films the world has to offer

Saving Daylight by Benjamin Balte a marquee above the beach. “Together, the two spaces seat 1050 people in COVID-safe conditions,” says Flickerfest director Bronwyn Kidd. Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said the Flickerfest program reached out to a broad audience and offered “many interesting and challenging stories told by filmmakers from diverse cultural backgrounds.” The festival culminates with the prestigious awards presentation held under the summer stars at Bondi Pavilion. Prizes worth $40,000

will be handed out, mainly in the form of valuable industry resources from sponsors like Avid which filmmakers can use to fund future projects. Seventeen awards will be made in a broad range of categories including best Australian Short Film, Best Short Documentary and Best Short Animation. After that Flickerfest hits the road for an eight month national tour which will showcase the very best films from the festival. Tony Maguire

Council says ‘No’ to off-leash dogs at Mackenzies Bay

Look at the sad expression in the eyes of Sarah Chard’s dog Michael. He is feeling depressed because he can no longer roam free at Mackenzies Bay, between Tamarama and Bondi. The rocky bay is an unofficial off-leash dog area and despite overwhelming community support, Waverley Council recently rejected the idea of making it an official one. More than 80% of locals polled in a council survey supported trialling Mackenzies Bay as an off-leash dog space, but in the end the Council decided that it should remain an official no-go area for dogs. It is going to increase ranger patrols of the small bay and spend $4000 on a community education campaign to enforce the dog ban there.

Mackenzies Bay has long been frequented by locals wanting to take dogs for dip in the water and a clamber around the rocks. Named after the Mackenzie family, who ran a large dairy farm overlooking Bondi and Tamarama, it sometimes has enough sand washed up round the rocks to qualify as a small beach. “While Mackenzies Bay is unsuitable for an off-leash area, Council will continue investigating options to provide more

off-leash facilities in appropriate locations,” said Waverley Mayor Paula Massellos. “In the meantime, we encourage dog owners to continue enjoying our nine existing off-leash dog areas in Waverley Local Government Area, including Marks Park and Bronte Park which respectively are only 350 metres and 750 metres away from Mackenzies Bay." Among the reasons given for the decision are dog faeces polluting the water and the potential disruption of bird life including Fairy-wrens and New Holland Honeyeaters. Sarah Chard was well-armed with doggiedoo bags when she spoke to Eastern Suburbs Life. “I’ve never seen anyone here not clean up after their dog,” she said. “I’m very disappointed in the council decision.” She said being able to have a swim was “very therapeutic” for Michael, a four-year-old broodle. Eastern Suburbs Life asked Michael how he felt about Fairy-wrens and New Holland Honeyeaters taking precedence over dogs. He gazed out at the ocean which is now forbidden to him, then raised his head to the sky and gave a mournful howl.

COVID SAFETY ON RANDWICK’S BEACHES Things are going to be a bit different on the eastern beaches this summer, with COVID safety taking precedence. And these are the people who will be enforcing it.

Randwick Council’s lifeguards and rangers will be working alongside special beach ambassadors to ensure popular swimming locations like Coogee and Maroubra remain safe. Also taking to the beach sands will be local police, who will be responsible for asking people to move on if beaches have to be closed, should that be deemed necessary due to overcrowding or other reasons. Eastern Beaches Police Area Commander, Superintendent Rohan Cramsie, says visitors are urged to plan ahead and to expect “a different holiday experience” during the summer months this year. Randwick Mayor Danny Said agrees. “There’s nothing more Sydney than a summer’s day out at the beach, but we all know that this summer is going to be different,” he says. The council urges people heading to the beach this summer to follow these six steps: 1. Check the COVID crowd capacity rating and live beach cams on www.randwick.nsw.gov.au before leaving home.

2. Wear a mask while getting to the beach if social distancing isn’t possible. 3. Keep a towel’s length (1.5m) apart from other beach goers. 4. Leave the beach once you’ve had a swim. 5. Visit outside of peak times such as during the week, early mornings and evenings. 6. Come back at a different time if the beach is busy.

Oh, and here’s seventh tip from Superintendent Cramsie – alcohol-swilling beach hoons are not welcome. He indicated that police are having a summer blitz on alcohol-fuelled anti-social activities. Randwick Council’s website will be updated each day with a COVID Crowd Capacity rating giving beachgoers the opportunity to pick the time of day and best beach to attend. Each beach will be rated in terms of its crowd capacity based on ensuring space for at least 1 person per 4 square metres. Beach COVID Crowd Capacity ratings: • Quiet. Open and adequate space for social distancing. • Busy. Open but crowd numbers are increasing. • Nearing capacity. Very busy. People are strongly advised not to visit and make alternative plans. • Closed. Do not visit. Safe COVID crowd numbers have now been exceeded.

wanted to be able to provide professional, compassionate, quality in-home care to the elderly – enabling them to live with dignity and respect, doing the things they enjoy in a safe and supportive home environment.

ESL: What do you like about your business? EHCS: It is very rewarding to assist clients

with their day-to-day needs. It truly is a privilege to be accepted in to someone’s private home. Put simply, we love what we do. Assisting families to care for a loved one is a hugely rewarding profession.

All our staff undergo rigorous police background and reference checks. It is mandatory for all staff to complete the government’s COVID-19 Infection Control Training. We also provide masks and gloves when necessary.

We saw that there was a need for a more person centred approach to homecare, where you don’t ring a 1800 number to get through, where you speak to your case manager directly whenever you need to. And that the clients really needed to be given the independence to live full and meaningful lives and give them the choices and respect that they deserve.

Our services include personal care, domestic assistance, social support, meal preparation, shopping and transportation. We also provide nursing services and 24 hour care. As well as, allied health services such as podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, acupuncture and massage.

EHCS: We are very much a person centred provider and we believe that the clients should have access to care without being charged high fees. We believe in building relationships with the clients to really find out what their goals and needs are and ensure they are getting the care they need and a worker of their choice.

ESL: Why would people choose Elderly Home Care Solutions?

EHCS: We think you should choose our

organisation because our clients are our main focus. If you want good communication, empathy, compassion, good relationships with managers and care workers as well as low rates of fees, then we are the people to talk to.

ESL: What qualifications do your staff have? EHCS: We have a range of workers and their qualifications vary depending on the job they do. All of our staff are required to complete an in-house training course. Others have

THE JNC CONNECTION For JNC, this year has been all about connection. In our role as the neighbourhood centre for Randwick and Waverley LGAs, we connect people with their community and strengthen their wellbeing. MANY WAYS TO CONNECT

This year the pandemic has made it much harder to continue our work of creating, building and maintaining connections. With public health restrictions in place we’ve had to find new ways to do our core business. As a result, we now offer our services in different forms: face to face at our community hubs or online, and over the phone, as well as out in the community. We also offer small-group outings for older people, playgroups, and activity groups – walking, tai chi, gardening and more.

in 2020. Together we have been able, in the face of enormous challenges, to make a difference in our community. A special thanks to this newspaper! Throughout the past year Eastern Suburbs Life generously allocated a column to JNC, allowing the community to connect with our services.

KEEP CONNECTED

Enjoy the holidays, stay safe, and keep connected. We look forward to working with you in 2021. JNC reopens Monday, January 4. Check out our website www.jnc.org.au for times our community hubs will be open, or: Phone JNC: 9349 8200 Email JNC: contact@jnc.org.au Text JNC: 0447 046 606

JNC – connecting people outdoors

We have programs to support families with children under 12 years, older people, and women and children experiencing domestic violence. We can link you with a JP, or a tutor to help you gain confidence with using your digital device. Through our information service, JNC can also connect you with support services in the community. Our online resources include a School Holidays Activities list that consolidates the many free and low-cost activities available. Many of these activities are suitable for adults too. Find the list at: www.jnc.org.au where you will also find our Holiday Season Crisis Support directory.

WOOLLAHRA

Kitchen to compost

About half of all food waste in the Woollahra area is sent to landfill each week, but you can help to reduce that amount by creating compost instead. It’s as simple as placing your food scraps into your green-lid bin rather than your red-lid garbage bin. To help get you started with composting, Council is offering a free kitchen caddy or set of compostable bags for your food scraps until 31 January. For more details, visit: woollahra. nsw.gov.au/kitchentocompost

COVID-Safe summer

COUNCIL NEWS 21

WAVERLEY

Kids pool restored but mosaic wall had to go

The children’s sea pool at North Bondi has been restored and reopened. But the mosaic wall alongside the pool had to be removed due to concrete cancer.

Christmas tree collection

Meanwhile, Council invites the original artists to get involved in workshopping ideas for the mural replacement. While the wall alongside the pool will never look the same, the good news is that North Bondi has its kiddies’ ocean water haven in top shape for summer. The upgrade works carried out include restoration of the culvert (stormwater drain) underneath the promenade, the access ramp and the pump at the children’s pool, staircases, lighting, accessible ramp and handrails.

Strata power savings

Waverley Council’s Building Futures program has helped selected strata buildings in the local area reduce their energy consumption by a higher than expected 24%. Building Futures was launched in 2018 to help Council deliver its ambitious emissions reduction targets by working with apartment buildings to identify and implement cost and energy-saving solutions in common property.

Transport for NSW conducts a used flare collection service, which is an opportunity for boat owners to safely dispose of expired flares which contain explosive matter that can be very dangerous if not disposed of properly. Rose Bay Boat Ramp, Rose Bay Sunday Jan 17, 12-1:30pm .

The newly refurbished Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club was officially re-opened by Randwick Mayor Danny Said and Club President Todd Mison.

The building now boasts accessible facilities and internal lift, a flexible events and venue space for community events and functions, new windows to the north and east, a balcony on the east side and a new sea wall to protect the building during future weather events.

The health of our community is important and throughout summer, our beaches and parks will continue to be monitored and regulated to ensure they do not become overcrowded and can remain open for everyone to enjoy. Read more about our COVID-Safe Summer Plan at: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/covidsafesummer

Coogee SLSC reopens after $4.4 upgrade

Sacrifice of the late 1980s mosaic mural was a controversial decision opposed by people like Greens councillor Dominic Wy Kanak plus some of the original artists and community members who collaborated on the work. A number of sections, like the one seen below, had indigenous significance.

Before demolishing the wall, Council identified some of its most outstanding pieces of artwork and when demolition time came, tried to remove these intact, or at least in jigsaw-like pieces that can be put back together again. And so the Council now has 120 bits of the mural in storage and says these can be claimed back by the original artists.

If you have a real/organic Christmas tree, Council has organised for them to be collected with your green waste on your regular service day. Please leave real/organic Christmas trees next to your green waste bin for collection and recycling into mulch. For more info visit: woollahra.gov.au/rubbish.

RANDWICK

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said: “The 24% reduction in energy consumption was achieved by working collaboratively with landlords, strata managers and residents, and exceeded our original target of 20%, putting us on a pathway towards our carbon neutral by 2030 target.”

Bondi Junction employment plunge

The number of office and commercial workers in Bondi Junction has plunged by 1300, according to a report tendered to Council. This has cast a further cloud over the longer-term prospects of office space in Bondi Junction against the backdrop of COVID-19. Councillors are now working on strategies for generating jobs and commercial space.

The $4.4m improvements were funded by close to $2.9m in NSW State Government grants and $1.5m from Randwick Council. “I’ve grown up on the eastern beaches and I know just how important surf lifesaving clubs are to our community, not just for the valuable service they provide, keeping swimmers safe on our beaches, but for the social cohesion they bring to a community, connecting individuals and promoting the value of volunteering,” Mayor Said stated. “It’s with no small amount of pride that we officially open the new look Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club today, knowing that it brings value to the entire community. It is more accessible, the internal space is flexible and can allow for a greater number of community events to be held here, it has improved the office space and facilities for the club, all while offering the most spectacular views over our coastline.” The upgrade also included the sea wall alongside the club. “Improvements to the sea wall mean it is better protected to handle future wild weather, such as the severe storm in 2016 that broke through the previous wall,” the Mayor said. “This new refurbishment will mean the Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club building will continue to be a place for people to gather for generations to come.”

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! Welcome to 2021, I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday season. I must express my thanks to all the frontline workers, volunteers and all the members of the community who are still working very hard to ensure everyone’s safety. As kids swap swimsuits and sandcastles for school shoes, I hope that the beginning of another school year is filled with excitement, promise and learning for all the families in the Coogee electorate.

BUSES

While many of us may have enjoyed a ride on a 333 or 379 to a beach this summer, our beloved buses are under threat. I have continued to stand up for and fight for our community and our buses. The now one-year-old CBD and Eastern Suburbs Light Rail remains less popular than the buses it is meant to replace and is not even close to reaching the levels of patronage it was commissioned for in 2013, it also has the lowest customer satisfaction of any transport mode in Sydney. Despite this, the NSW Liberal Government are now planning to remove many important bus services, including; the 302, 314, 317, 373, 376, 377, 393, 394, 395, 397, 399, L94, M10, M50, 891 and 893 services. Additionally, the 303, 307, 313, 316, 348, 370, 374, 391, 392, 396 and 400 will be changed to only go to Randwick or Kingsford, or be sent elsewhere, and only 4 new routes will be introduced to replace all of these cancelations. To learn more about their plan to cut our services, and get involved in our campaign, please head to my webpage: www.marjorieoneill.com.au

COMMUNITY SURVEY

I want to hear from you! Please scan the QR Code to complete my community survey:

The Spot Festival latest event casualty

Randwick’s The Spot Festival will be postponed to September 2021 in the hope that COVID restrictions will continue to ease allowing Council to host the popular street event. The festival is traditionally held in March and has run for the past 14 years. It was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID fears. The cancellation comes at the end of the year which saw COVID cast its shadow over numerous other local events. Coogee’s New Years Eve fireworks did not explode over the ocean as 2021 got under way. Even smaller but beloved community events, such as Matraville’s annual Christmas in the park celebrations, were cancelled till 2021.
