Walkabout Vaucluse to Rose Bay with Ruth In this Ed 26, I walk from Towns Rd to Old South Head Rd, Vaucluse and head back to Towns Rd via New South Source: www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au Vaucluse Rd 5
Head Rd passing historical landmarks, beautiful panoramas and village shops.
I begin my walk at Towns Rd, which borders Rose Bay and Vaucluse...heading towards Old South Head Rd...along the way you can't miss the concrete water tower in Black St. A letter was written in the SMH in 1930 about the water tank.

Sir, The new water tank at Vaucluse is a grotesque and unsightly structure. Its site is the most commanding In Sydney, and was worthy of an imposing landmark. Had this water tank been constructed in the form of an ornamental round tower it would have been an adornment. The authorities responsible for this disfigurement had evidently little regard for city beautification.

I walk to the junction of Old South Head Rd and New South Head Road passing a pretty row of Art Deco shops, then onto Vaucluse Village shops. There is a lovely community feeling about these shops which feature cafes, bottleshop, vet, pharmacy, post office & hair salon etc....you can take a well-earned rest here, just before you head down towards famous "heart-break hill".

Just past Johnstons Lookout with magnificent views out to Manly and beyond, is the old Watsons Bay Tram Line shelter, used as a bus shelter now. I head down the hill to Kincoppal-Rose Bay, which is a member of the international group of Sacred Heart Schools conducted by the Society of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic teaching order established by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat in France in 1800.

THE TAROT CARD IS – THE STAR
This Tarot card shows a Goddess kneeling with one foot in a pool of swirling water where she is watering flowers which are beginning to bloom. This means growth on the horizon. She has a cosmic balance which indicates balance within ourselves.
THE STAR is a lucky card but suggests you stick to one thing at a time and to finish a job properly. Its important to pace yourself which will give you better results. If you put your energy into one thing at a time you will be successful. You are always ahead of time. You have inspiration in your bones so use them properly which will enable you to have a successful year. Lucky gemstone is TURQUOISE Lucky numbers are 11 & 4 Lucky colours are BLUE & SILVER
At the end of Towns Rd is Coles Supermarket, which was once a theatre, created by George Webster and Guy Crick who combined their skills in exhibition and architecture to create a varying but recognisable chain of theatres. The first was the Rose Bay North Kings Theatre, opened in June 1935. It was leased to E. Smythe and stayed in the Kings Circuit until 1947. Greater Union Theatres had bought the Kings Theatres chain in 1946, but new owners of the Rose Bay North King Theatre in July 1947; P. Sourry and A.A. Coroneo continued on their own.

The Rose Bay North Kings Theatre closed on Oct 17, 1958. The circle seating area was demolished and the building was bought by Mills & Mills and occupied by Boyce Brothers, a women’s wear manufacturer. It was later a fruit & vegetable market. In April 2006 it became a Coles Supermarket.

I turn left onto Old South Head Rd and continue my walk passing Mark Moran Home, now a luxurious retirement facility, but before that it was Vaucluse Boys' High School which was opened on June 30, 1960. The school became co-educational in Jan 1982. It was declared in 2005 that Vaucluse High and the nearby Dover Heights High would be merged to form Rose Bay Secondary College. I pass a house with a bird sculpture soaring over the garage. A plaque reads:
"WON & LOST" Installed April 2012, Sculptor Peter Maxwell Allison (2/4/1950- 11/10/2014) Horseshoe Creek Foundry, WAUCHOPE NSW
This is crafted from stainless steel sheet and curvilinear shapes specialised machinery Peter manufactured for this purpose. His training at QANTAS as a Ground Engineer provided the skills which were then utilised in his many artistic pursuits..Peter was a good example of a Polymath quietly achieving great works of art in his incredible foundry workshop. He is sadly missed.

Founded in 1882. Kincoppal was established at Elizabeth Bay in 1909. The two schools were amalgamated in 1971 to become Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart. The view from here is the most spectacular view of Sydney Harbour, and arguably the best place to see the NYE fireworks. Opposite Kincoppal is Kambala Girls' School, established in 1884 at Fernbank, Edgecliff Rd by Miss Louisa Jane Gurney and, in 1887, in partnership with Mme Soubeiran, moved to the house "Kambala" in Bellevue Hill, set in 13 acres, from which the school took its name.

In 1913, the School moved again, to its present site in New South Head Road, Rose Bay. The property was known as "Tivoli", from the original Tivoli Estate, and was previously occupied by Captain William Dumaresq and later by merchant James Robinson Love. The new building was built in 1841, and the notable architect John Horbury Hunt was commissioned to extend it.
8On New South Head Rd by Towns Rd is "EMMA'S WELL". This is a natural source of spring water that was enjoyed by the traditional owners of Woollahra and the early occupants or Vaucluse and Rose Bay. The 1874 constructed well is associated with Sir John Hay, a Scots-born pastoralist, businessman, quiet philanthropist and long-serving parliamentarian of colonial NSW, who had connections with several properties situated within the Municipality of Woollahra - including Samuel’s Breakwell’s 60-acre grant, on which Emma's well is located. The site's name derives from Emma Collins, an Aboriginal woman residing nearby. PISCES (Feb19 - Mar 20)
