You can imagine the excitement as almost 1,000 passengers boarded the 15 carriages being hauled by the “four-coupled” train that was to take them to their destination just 38km away. Unknown to them their driver, Thomas McGrath, was expecting to take just 800 passengers in 13 carriages hauled by six-wheel coupled engine. He expressed his concerns to the station master who said “I did not write these instruction for you, they were written by the company’s general manager – any driver who comes here does not grumble about taking an excursion train with him.” About 3km out from the station, on a steep incline, the train was split in two with five carriages being taken ahead and 10 carriages “chocked” to be left behind for the engine to return and haul later. The front two carriages were also separated from the back eight and accidentally bumped them causing them to run backwards down the hill.
Public opinion and other parliamentary members did not agree and within two months the Regulation of Railways Act 1889 was passed. A report at the time said “Here is the most striking example of the direct intervention of the state in the working of British railways in the 19th Century, and it proved entirely beneficent.” It is now accepted that private companies have community responsibilities so when the unfettered might of Google and Facebook leads to the closure of hundreds of News Limited hard copy papers, and when 37 local community titles cease publication in any form at all, we know we have our own 21st Century “Train Wreck”.
A storm of protest has broken out over a proposal to build a waste incinerator which would vent toxic fumes over Matraville and the surrounding area.
Mr Hanson said the incinerator would provide steam for Opal’s paper mill by burning 165,000 tonnes of “non-recyclable” waste each year – 35,000 tonnes of which will contain PVC, which creates highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins when burnt.
Mr Hanson led a community protest outside the former CBA offices in Matraville, which will
During that time, he has notched up many achievements of great benefit to the community, including: • Giving booze-swilling beach hoons their marching orders by banning alcohol consumption on beaches and reserves in Coogee. • Building of an all-inclusive playground and skate park at Chifley. • The underground Coogee Beach facilities.
The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. They want to build a 65 metre high smoke stack to disperse the fumes. Opposition to the proposal is being organised by the Matraville Precinct and led by

Young mother Rebecca Vinny lives 130 metres from the proposed incinerator site. “It’s insane,” she said. “I have three children and the harmful health effects of this kind of pollution might not show up for years. And what about property prices? How are you going to sell your one and a half million dollar house when it’s next to a toxic incinerator?”
He said the plan was not only a danger to public health, but did not make economic sense. “Waste incineration is the most polluting and expensive way to make energy,”
Opposition to the proposal is being organised by the Matraville Precinct and led by chemical engineer, Chris Hanson, who started the No More Toxic Incinerators pages on Facebook and Twitter, along with a dedicated web page.
He has sold his twin chemist shops on either side of Bunnerong Rd, but will remain active behind the pharmacy counter as a consultant if required. Meanwhile, he is looking forward to the next state election, when he will have another shot at winning the State Seat of Maroubra as an Independent.

A big thank you too, goes to the team at Eastern Suburbs Life and our readers who contribute with their thoughts, suggestions, comments and voluntary help.
Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.”
The man whose name is synonymous with Matraville, Noel D’Souza, is about to retire. Well, kind of.
We therefore extend a big thank you to Josh Frydenberg for showing the world the first step of the way to solving the problem. It is a significant achievement and will be applauded by both publishers and members of the community.
We are grateful to you all and are also delighted to welcome NSW Ports who support over 25,000 local jobs. Without them this paper would not exist.
The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. They want to build a 65 metre high smoke stack to disperse the fumes.
Local politicians, businesses and residents – some of whose homes are less than 150 metres from the planned incinerator site – are fuming over the proposal, which bypasses the local government approval process.

At the time, the greatest imperative of a railroad was to make money for its shareholders. There were four classes of passenger, safety was not a consideration, passenger comfort came low on the list and the general consensus was that what the railroads did was their own business and none of the government’s.
Member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, agreed. He said: “The Port Botany area is one of the most polluted areas of the country and we don’t need any more damaging emissions spewing over our community.”

BLACKHAWK DOWN ... in Watsons Bay Tremendous noise accompanied turbulent air gusts then, without warning, a large Australian army helicopter landed. Within minutes another Blackhawk, also decorated with the distinctive grey and green camouflage design, landed around 100 metres from the first – most of whose crew then charged off, in uniform, complete with guns, helmets with de rigueur cameras, accompanied by two military working dogs, and ran onto the second chopper, to be whisked away. A war time scene or one from an action movie? An army promo perhaps? No – this all took place on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, on February 17, in quiet suburban Robertson Park – the main open area of Watsons Bay; barely 100 metres from houses, and where this writer was working on this newspaper. Usually, if a chopper lands in the park, occasionally for such police or rescue vehicles to provide transport from The Gap, safety officers or police warn people of the imminent landing and set up a security cordon. This was a complete surprise! National TV crews quickly arrived and informed us locals and the increasing crowd of excited spectators that there’d been a training exercise on the harbour which went wrong: unfortunately the main rotor of the first chopper had clipped the mast of the boat with which it had the exercise. Though, fortunately, there were no injuries, this ‘slight’ – however reportedly very expensive – damage can affect its flying capability so Watsons Bay’s park was urgently decided upon as offering a
safe and optimal landing area for the emergency landing. “I’ve heard of parking being crazy in the Eastern Suburbs but this is ridiculous!” quipped a local wag. Another warned the soldiers surrounding it on 24/7 security detail to be wary of the [appropriately named] ‘grey bombers’ – lest the chopper incur a fine for overstaying its welcome. Indeed, for three days it was ‘parked’ there with engineers inspecting it. Becoming a temporary tourist attraction, people drove past to gawk, groups of young men came to view the marvellous machinery, families brought children who delighted in seeing a real copter, many took selfies, and some garbos on their early morning round jumped into the park to have their photos taken with it.
COVID-masked chopper, socially distancing
A great PR exercise, it seemed, if it hadn’t turned out to be such a costly one! Removing the helicopter proved to be another crowd pleaser – though an enormous challenge. After the rotors were removed and ceremoniously placed onto a very long, large truck by a group of soldiers, the huge carcass of the helicopter was finally hauled onto the back of a tow truck on Friday evening. With various people and smaller vehicles warning of the wide load, hours later it slowly made its way up Old South Head Road. Robertson Park returned to being a sleepy quiet playground.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH With 2021 now well and truly underway, I hope you managed to spend some restful time with family and friends over the summer break. Like many of you I expect, my interstate travel plans to visit family were interrupted. Fortunately, NSW is now seeing a further easing of COVID-19 restrictions, thanks to the community's collective efforts. From 12:01am on Friday, February 26, NSW residents will be allowed up to 50 people at their home, up from 30 — the total number of visitors includes adults and children. At weddings, up to 30 people will be able to dance, and up to 50 people will also be allowed in gym classes, although the 4-square metre rule will still apply.
COVID-19 VACCINE IS HERE
Our vaccination program is underway! The second shipment of another 166,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Australia this week. The first phase of our vaccination program focuses on protecting our most vulnerable and frontline workers, who are protecting all of us. Getting vaccinated does just that.
PEP-11 LICENCE
Like many of you, I feel especially attached to the ocean. Here in Wentworth we have some of the world’s most pristine coastline, with beaches that people travel from around the world to visit. Last year I spoke in Parliament against the renewal of the petroleum exploration permit 11 licence, or PEP 11. This licence covers the coastline off Sydney, stretching from Newcastle to Wollongong. This area is one of the most densely populated and trafficked strips of ocean in the world. It's also one of the most beautiful and most iconic. I have made my opposition to the renewal of PEP-11 known to the NSW and Federal Ministers responsible, and this month the NSW Deputy Premier formally opposed the renewal of the licence. In October last year we created a community petition to help you voice your opposition please sign today at www.bit.ly/stoppep11 PEP-11 is due to expire this month unless renewed, and community support is necessary to stop this going ahead.
Australians can be confident these vaccines are safe, free and evidence shows they stop you from getting seriously ill with COVID-19.
MARDI GRAS
My office has received a lot of questions about the vaccine rollout, and the Australian Department of Health has put together a list of frequently asked questions to address any concerns. Visit my website at www.davesharma.com.au/covid-vaccine to read more.
Mardi Gras is an important celebration of gay and lesbian culture and a symbol of the vibrancy which adds so much to Sydney's diversity.
It’s great news that Mardi Gras will be going ahead on Saturday, March 6, with the parade proceeding in a COVIDSafe way at the SCG.
It's an enormous celebration that has become a key part of the Sydney calendar. I congratulate those who work so hard to make sure Mardi Gras is a success each year, and I'll be marching proudly in the parade on
Saturday night, as the local MP. Happy Mardi Gras! Dave Sharma Federal Member for Wentworth

Face masks & work
Spare a thought for people who are always required to wear a face mask for work, such as hospital operating theatre staff (pictured above).
A Secret Day on Sydney Harbour - Part Three by Chris Ellard continues the next Ed 28 (April) of the paper.
Note that the pictured masks have head straps secured behind the head – not behind the ear 'ear loops'. Head strap face masks lower the risk of the straps getting entangled (and dislodging) ear-level hearing aids.
A ‘SECRET’ DAY ON SYDNEY HARBOUR PART TWO After arriving at the ramp at 9am, we had an hour to get her ready while the other crew members, who were coming later, took their time having breakfast in bed and generally lazing around. The coastal weather forecast for the day was a 10 –15 knot southerly, gusty later and with clear blue skies. At that time of day it was a mere 3-5 knots, a perfect beginning for a Secret Sydney day, bound for one of the famous little harbour beaches. Rigging the boat with two people is very easy and even by yourself you can be on the water in 35 minutes once you’ve had some practice. We start with the bowsprit. This involves tightening up the gammon iron, attaching the bobstay and cat stays. We make these bar tight to give the rigging the stiffness needed for the top end performance a boat like the Secret offers. Then it was time to raise the mast. This sits in a tabernacle on the cabin roof with the pressure transferred via the king post to the keel. The mast can be lowered on the water for passage under smaller bridges. On this boat the top of the mast sits in a crutch attached to the mainsheet horse with wing nuts for quick set up and removal. A quick check to make sure all halyards and shrouds are in the right place, then up she went. The shrouds are set up with lanyards and generally will not need adjusting and are left alone after a day’s sailing (one less thing to do before we get out on the water next time).
Finally, the rest of our crew turned up with the captain’s provisions. These consisted of: a six pack of premium Tasmanian beer, two bottles of local Sauvignon blanc (a nice wine for summer sun and fun), one Portuguese style chicken, a few vegetable patties, 12 fluffy white bread rolls, two large tubs of salad, a bag of crisps and a bag of ice to keep it all cool until lunch. Note: the provisions were listed in order of priority. With the important stores loaded, we all jumped in (some of the less agile crew may have stumbled in). The bowman, who is the last to come aboard, gave her a light push. I held the tiller over hard and sheeted the sails in and we were off. The course set for the day was a couple of hours sailing up to Sydney heads, then to Chowder bay on the northern side for lunch and a refreshing dip in the water at Cliffton Gardens.

Damm, I’m looking good I thought, as a group of Japanese tourists start taking photos of the process. With the mast up we were almost there. On this calm, sunny morning we decided to put all the sails up before launching. I like leaving the wharf in style without the engine, so with a last check over she was ready to go. I jumped in the car and backed her into the water. We pushed her off and she slipped in with a little gurgle and sat beautifully on her waterline. With the painter we pulled her around to the jetty next to the ramp.

Eastern suburbs resident appointed President of the Garden Clubs of Australia A local has been appointed National President of The Gardens Clubs of Australia. Though her term of office began in September, Rose Bay resident Lorraine Emerson only now has the opportunity to become fully active in her role, with the recent lifting of borders and other restrictions. “I’ll be out and about at least one week in four, throughout Australia, from now on. Visiting the clubs, particularly for their anniversaries.” Vaucluse Garden Club, for instance, celebrates 40 years later this year, which is a wonderful cause for celebration as Lori has been associated with it since 2009. After progressing to zone co-ordinator, which means looking after all the clubs in the area, she was made president of VGC in 2011. In 2017 she joined the 12-person national committee as events manager, then went on to be Vice President. In her new position as National President, as well as Chairman of the Board, Lori presides over 750 garden clubs or affiliates nationally, which encompass around 50,000 members. During her two-year term, her role involves speaking to the clubs. “We encourage members and advise on all the services we provide supporting Garden Clubs around Australia,” she explains. This covers insurance and awards as well as encouragement for
young gardeners. Other advantages of being part of the organisation include gardening education as well as trips to view beautiful gardens.
The Garden Clubs of Australia [GCA] is a non-profit organisation founded in 1950 by Margaret Davis MBE OAM, who wrote several gardening books, and a number of flowers have been named in her honour. Davis hailed from Vaucluse and most of the organisation’s early meetings were held at the renowned Tea Rooms at Vaucluse House. GCA’s affiliates are made up of general garden clubs, societies (eg orchid, rose, bonsai) – and, more recently, community garden groups. An informative magazine, Our Gardens, goes out quarterly to members as well as a yearly calendar and a free photo competition is held. Bi-annual conferences are held overseas or within Australia plus an annual Sydney conference.
Garden Sydney, and has been an accredited floral and garden judge for the past five years.
“We have experienced speakers, interaction with horticultural societies, and for a person on their own… it does [offer] that bond. The main aim is friendship through gardens – which is our motto,” Lori emphasises. “Whilst it is a social outlet, it’s also amazing the expertise that has come through.”
“Anything to do with gardening and flowers brings me joy!” Lori enthuses. Thus, during her tenure, she aims to: “Bring gardening into people’s lives and get them to realise it’s good for the soul and mind as well as the body; it’s very therapeutic and brings beauty to your life.”
As well as an extensive gardening background, Lori is an accredited commercial florist and has worked for many years in landscape design, as well as in the horticultural industry. She’s also a member of the speakers’ group at the Royal Botanic
Altruism is very much part of GCA and members are very caring, she observes. Indeed, the organisation is populated with those who give back to the community. This is exemplified in the many members who’ve been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for their services to gardening and to floral art.
Gardening also played a very important role in the past year during lockdown, Lori explained. Each member is very important: “The first thing I did when Covid hit was to get our members to call people and ask: ‘If you’re unable to get out, can I get you something from the pharmacy or supermarket and drop it off to you?’ … It’s a very personal relationship.” And what changes have come about from the impact of the past year’s challenges? “Everything’s changed but gardening hasn’t,” Lori opines. St Joseph's is a Roman Catholic church which was erected in 1866 but the present structure, of early English Gothic style, dates from 1874 it is ministered by Franciscan Friars. Next to St Joseph's, at No. 8 Albert St, is Fenton...but only the gates and driveway can be seen.
Fenton was the residence of NZ born architect Robin Dods, built after WWI. Once described as a contemporary house, built as a counterpart to an eighteenth century English house but with "all the best features of a modern home". Today it is a private residence. Opposite side of the street, once stood Quambi, built in 1862 by Mr Montague Consett Stephen, later purchased by Sir Frederick Darley, P.C., M.L.C., Q.C., Lieu. Governor in 1891. It was demolished in the 1930's and replaced by 'Quambi Place' proclaimed in 1938 becoming a significant streetscape of houses after the 'Wilkinson style'. Sir Edward Knox built 'Fiona' in 1864 after having it designed by J. F. Hilly. Other elements of the estate included 'Glenrock', an Italianate residence designed by David MacBeath and built by John Marks circa 1870. There were also substantial gates of wrought iron and sandstone. The building was demolished when New South Head Road was widened, but the gates survived. ESL talks to Chris Sullivan from Sullivan Building ESL: Why did you start a building business? SB: Originally, Kim and I ran a plumbing
and roofing business, but as our experience and knowledge grew, we decided to get a builders licence.
I studied to gain certification and Kim, who was already a qualified graphic artist, with a flair for styling, undertook a design course. Together this allowed us to provide a complete building renovation service, all in one package.
ESL: How long have you been in business? SB: We've now been in the business for
over 28 years.
ESL: How many people work in the business? SB: We work with, and co-ordinate, a highly
skilled team of sub-contractors who have been with us for years. Together we achieve outstanding results and always guarantee the quality of our workmanship.
ESL: What do you do and what do you specialise in? SB: We are a construction company
specialising in renovation design, planning, and construction.
ESL: Do you work with councils and how do you work with them? SB: Yes, it is really important to have a professional working relationship with local councils and we are meticulous in adhering to all building standards and the terms of all building permit legislation.
ESL: What is unique about your business? SB: We pride ourselves on our personable
and hands-on approach when dealing with our clients and are a small husband and wife team to provide a total solution. This is unusual in the industry. We approach every project with absolute focus on the needs of our clients and do our utmost to deliver every project or renovation on time and within budget. It’s something we love and have enjoyed doing for many years.
ESL: What do you most like about the business? SB: We love the connection that we make
with our clients. We are working in their homes, often for months at a time, and consider this a privilege.
We have developed long-term professional relationships with many of our clients who have often undertaken several renovations. We are grateful that they seek our advice and services when buying a property to renovate.
ESL: What kind of other businesses do you work with? SB: We work collaboratively with a wide

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA We continue to explore the important contributions of past parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point. THOMAS SUTCLIFFE MORT -
PART TWO As discussed in the previous article, TS Mort was a driving force in shaping much of our modern society. His initial and most lasting legacy was to be responsible for rationalising the sale of wool as it emerged as the nation’s staple commodity. The public auctioneering system enabled local producers to stand apart from the London-based brokers who made vast profits from exploiting colonial produce. As the wool industry emerged, Mort, with the aid of his brother William in England was able to guarantee a fair price for the high quality merino-based wool which had become the most valuable export commodity of the colony. Importantly, Mort was able to develop the first ‘pastoral house’ with credit facilities, consignment arrangements for their produce in London, and commercial assurance for pastoralists. This was so successful that it ensured the future success of the Australian Wool industry and allowed the young Mort to pursue other ventures which also benefited the broader community. As a serial entrepreneur, Mort was able to invest in steamship companies, railways, mining, large pastoral concerns like the Twofold Bay Pastoral Company and many
more. A devout church and family man, he provided encouragement and often financial support to all kinds of benevolent activities including founding of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, which provided life assurance to thousands of Australian families.
Mort was a complicated man who suffered from periodic bouts of depression. Despite his wealth and standing in the community he was driven to serve his fellow man. A genuine polymath, he invested much of his wealth in huge projects such as the creation of a dry dock which enabled overseas shipping to operate from our distant shores. He also experimented with large scale dairying, farming alpacas, producing silk, cotton and sugar, pioneering the way for others. Perhaps his greatest achievement was pioneering the refrigeration industry. While he did not live to see the first export of frozen meat, after years of experimentation he had perfected the process which facilitated the preservation of fresh produce over vast distances, enabling the supply of Australian meat and dairy products to the rest of the world. He established the first freezing works in the world in Darling Harbour. One of Thomas Mort’s greatest strengths was his profound understanding of the obligations imposed by wealth and status, combined with his desire to express his Christian faith in practical ways. In 1857 Sir Alfred Stephen, the Chief Justice, said of his works, “It would be difficult to specify one public undertaking, having for its object the
advancement of religion, or benevolence, or the promotion of the interests of the colony, which Mr Mort has not aided – by his purse and his advocacy, almost invariably by both”. TS Mort died in 1878 at the age of only 61. He was deeply mourned throughout the community. A fine statue in his honour stands in Macquarie Place erected by public subscription. Ian Tresise St Mark's Historical Society

Preserving the things that we love the most I consider myself very fortunate indeed to have lived the majority of my life, in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney situated around Waverley and Randwick.
There is no doubt in my mind that we are among the luckiest people on earth. The beauty of our environment lies not just in its beaches, coastline, the Centennial Parklands and rolling hills, but also in its institutions and its people. Our physical environment is nothing short of extraordinary and we have all come to understand the importance of actively working to preserve it. Keeping our streets clean, recycling our garbage, reducing our waste and generally reducing our carbon footprint have become highly valued mainstream activities for most of us. It is also clear that we are not doing enough and that much more needs to be done including nurturing our bees and small birds, eliminating single use plastics and reducing our dependence on motor vehicles. What also makes the east so wonderful is the presence of world class institutions in health and education, including one of Australia’s best hospitals, a magnificent university, one of the few remaining TAFEs, as well as many great schools.
The preservation of quality and affordable health, education and public transport are crucial to maintaining the quality of life we have enjoyed, which is why I passionately advocate and fight for these services in our community. Protecting the diversity and richness of our area, including its people, is of paramount importance. Our population defines the area: imagine a beach without life savers, parks without children, streets without the elderly and a local entry card that required youth, fitness, an undergraduate degree and a few million dollars to enter! As our area becomes more and more expensive to buy and live in, the diversity of our population also needs protection and much more needs to be done to build affordable housing, disability access everywhere and free community spaces for everyone. As we look to our future needs, it is vital that we value what we have and plan to meet our future needs through better planning. One simple thing that most of us could do to protect and enhance our locality would be to walk more and drive less. Let’s give it a go. Dr Marjorie O'Neill MP Member for Coogee
The new bins with their light green lids are for both garden waste plus food scraps. As well as getting the FOGO bins, residents also had their red and yellow-lid bins replaced. “The bins were 15-20 years old and many were damaged,” said a Randwick Council spokesperson. As well as new bins, there’s a new rubbish management regime. Previously, the council’s own workers and trucks had handled the green bin waste service, while contractors emptied the red and yellow-lid bins. Now, following Council’s signing of a $100 million, 10-year contract with Cleanaway in 2020, the entire rubbish collection service is privatised. “There are no additional costs to ratepayers,” the council spokesperson said. FOGO bins get emptied weekly, while the yellow and red lid bins are serviced fortnightly. All households now have the larger 240 litre red lid bins to allow for the two week cycle, compared to the previous weekly one. The new system will result in a dramatic reduction in the amount of rubbish sent for landfill. “With the average rubbish bin in Australia containing 40 per cent organic waste, councils have been looking at alternatives,” says Randwick Mayor Danny Said.
Here are some tips for using the new system: • If you don’t want to put loose waste in your FOGO bin, you can wrap your waste in paper or use compostable bags (not just biodegradable ones.) The bags should be certified under one of these standards: AS 5810, AS 4736, ASTM D6400 and EN13432. • You might want to think about layering the food waste you are putting in the FOGO bin between garden waste such as lawn clippings. • Under the lid of the new bins there is information about what goes inside. Apart from vegetable peelings, bones, egg shells, seafood, rice and a multitude of other food scraps, the FOGO bins can take tissues and paper towels, soiled pizza boxes and compostable packaging. Pet waste and kitty litter are also allowed. However, human waste in the form of soiled nappies isn’t. Ditto sanitary and incontinence products. They all go in the red bin. Families with babies and non toilet-trained toddlers may have to devise new strategies to manage the challenge of soiled nappies festering in their bins for a fortnight. “Use a sprinkling of bicarbonate of soda to deodorise your bin,” advises Hobart City Council, which has been operating a FOGO collection scheme since November 2019. In Hobart, research had found that the average household was contributing more than 200 kilograms of food to landfill each year. The new recycling regime in the Tasmanian city has seen the diversion of 500 tonnes of rubbish from landfill in the first year. And this, Hobart City Council says, equates to a reduction of 4729 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. While FOGO might have some challenges for Randwick householders, they can feel proud of the fact that they’re helping to safeguard our planet’s future.

Max Dupain and La Perouse: The Caltex Story Discover what's been lost and what still stands at La Perouse through Dupain's distinctive lens.
This series of photographs is sourced from the collection of State Library of NSW, and dates from c. 1953.
Rediscover what has been lost, and what still stands at La Perouse through Dupain’s distinctive lens.
Max Dupain was famous for his uber-modern, bold, almost heroic images of Australia's landscapes and architecture. But he was also a commercial enterprise and undertook assignments from both civic and commercial patrons.
The exhibition features striking images of La Perouse; its people, the environs and buildings. Some images are pragmatic and documentary, yet others are more evocative, capturing fleeting moments in time.

Exotic to Me: Watercolour paintings by Carol Ruff When artist Carol Ruff was growing up, her mother, Jan Ruff O'Herne, thrilled her and her sister with stories of her childhood home of Java - a land of gamelan music and volcanos, sugar cane and banyan trees, tropical fruit and hibiscus, temple and stone - an exotic idyllic childhood in Dutch colonial Java, pre World War ll - when everything was changed, says Carol. Java was her mother's 'home' and it remained so, deep in her heart forever - although she moved to Holland after the war, then to England and finally to Australia with her husband and daughters - Carol and her sister - in 1960. When Jan died in August 2019, aged 96 years, Carol and her husband, photographer Greg Weight, decided to take her spirit back 'home' to Java. This was a very emotional journey and tribute. A new lease on life
Coogee resident Ellis Janks (above right) can be spotted running regularly on the streets of South-East Sydney. Like many other local residents, he loves sport and the outdoors.
SPORTING LEGENDS GO TO BAT AGAINST INCINERATOR Sporting greats Mike Whitney and Russell Fairfax have joined the fight against a planned industrial incinerator in the neighbourhood they both grew up in.
Cricketing legend and TV presenter Mike was raised in Matraville and has just moved from Maroubra to South Coogee. Russell has lived in Little Bay since the age of 10 and went to La Perouse Public School. And therefore they both remember the terrible industrial pollution in the area back in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. “We grew up in a toxic, polluted environment,” Mike told Eastern Suburbs Life as he and Russell prepared to record video commentary about the incinerator with Randwick Council. “There was the oil refinery, ICI and Bunnerong Power House. And the sewage treatment plant at Malabar didn’t have the ocean outfalls yet. Botany Bay was a toxic sewer. Since then things have got a lot better. Thinking about a project like an incinerator is a backward step.” Rugby League legend Russell agreed. “I’m not against burning waste, but not here,” he said. “If they put one chimney up, they’ll want to put a second one up.” Randwick Council is posting video of Mike, Russell, residents and local politicians talking about the incinerator proposal on social media as part of a strategy to harness community opposition to the plan. The plan is to build the $220m incinerator on the Matraville site of the Opal (formerly ORORA) paper recycling plant off Botany Road. Opal’s partner in the deal is Suez Recycling and Recovery. They want to build a 60 metre high smoke stack to disperse the fumes. Opposition to the proposal is being co-ordinated by chemical engineer, Chris
Hanson, who started the No More Toxic Incinerators pages on Facebook and Twitter plus a dedicated web page. Mr Hanson said the incinerator would provide steam for Opal’s paper mill by burning 165,000 tonnes of “non-recyclable” waste each year – 35,000 tonnes of which will contain PVC, which creates highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins when burnt. Federal member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite says the project would result in not only pollution from the chimney stack but an estimated additional 54 truck movements each day. “It makes me angry to have corporations like this riding roughshod over the concerns of the community,” he told Eastern Suburbs Life. “it’s a ridiculous proposal and I will fight it to the hilt.” State member for Maroubra, Michael Daley, who lives in nearby Chifley, is also vehemently opposed to the plan. “I don’t want my children growing up with a 60 metre stack spewing chemicals into the area,” he said. “The community needs to be proactive when this matter comes before the state government’s independent planning panel and make it clear we are opposed to it.” Like Mike Whitney and Russell Fairfax, both MPs grew up in the area, so they have a deep sense of community. So does Randwick Mayor Danny Said, a life-long Matraville resident. “We are still cleaning up the toxic legacies from the past, like our polluted groundwater,” the Mayor told Eastern Suburbs Life. “The incinerator is the last thing we need and Randwick Council is strongly opposed to the plan.” To get involved in the campaign against the incinerator, drop an email to Chris Hanson at nomoreincinerators@gmail.com

Coogee resident Ellis Janks can be spotted running regularly on the streets of South-East Sydney. Like many other local residents, he loves sport and the outdoors. But Janks is a little different from most. He is frequently to be seen guiding other runners, like Charlie McConnell, above left, who has been blind most of his life. For Janks, guiding other runners started more than 24 years ago, when he co-founded the Achilles Running Club in Sydney. Achilles enables people with disabilities to exercise alongside volunteer guides who have been trained to support them. As long-term Achilles president, Janks has shared his time, his knowledge as a physiotherapist of the benefits of exercise, and his passion for contributing to wellbeing in the community. Every Sunday morning, around 50 Achilles members meet on the steps of the Art Gallery of NSW. There volunteers are paired with people with disabilities, and set off walking or running through the Botanic Gardens. In addition to regular exercise sessions, Achilles members participate together in various athletic events, have social gatherings, go swimming and bushwalking, and enter gruelling events both locally and overseas – for example, the New York Marathon, the Oxfam Trailwalker, the ascent to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, and the 90 km Comrades Marathon in South Africa. To these feats
Janks has added the tortuous 90km Kokoda Track, which he completed in 2006, guiding McConnell and inspired by his perseverance. As Janks says, “Volunteering with Achilles has been very satisfying. I’ve watched people form friendships, volunteers and people with disabilities alike, as they enjoy exercising together." Everyone has grown; their lives have changed dramatically. For people with disabilities, we have been able to break down barriers and overcome isolation. And for our volunteers, the determination of the people they guide is inspiring." . Today there are other Achilles clubs in Canberra, Melbourne, the Central Coast and Brisbane, and members meet interstate to participate in events together. In the recent Australia Day Honours list, Janks was recognised with an OAM for his service to people with a disability through exercise. But he says, “I’m part of an organisation, and I accept the award on behalf of the whole team – volunteers and people with disabilities alike.” “I urge everyone to get involved with Achilles,” Janks adds. “Volunteer, and spread the word to people with disabilities who’d like to exercise and socialise. You’ll gain a new lease on life.”

NIGHT MARKET COMING TO BONDI BEACH Waverley Council has given the go-ahead for a night market to be held at Bondi Beach over two weekends during the April school holidays.
If the event is successful it could become a regular fixture, something that many local traders think is long overdue given the success of night markets elsewhere in Australia and around the world. The night market will be held on the first two weekends of the Easter school holidays, running 4-9pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2.30-9pm Sundays. Stalls and other market attractions will be located on part of the grassed area around the pavilion, the amphitheatre beside the pavilion and the car park next to Campbell Pde. There will be stalls selling food, beverages and goods from local traders, along with amusement rides and entertainment. Waverley Council is talking to youth service WAYS about providing live musical entertainment. In addition, there will be a so-called “silent disco” – DJs will play music on a raised stage, but you’ll only be able to hear it through an app or hiring COVID-safe headphones. Cost of “admission” to the silent disco will be $5.
The go-ahead for the night market follows a string of event cancellations by Waverley Council under the dark cloud of COVID. Last year’s Festival of the Winds was blown away by the virus and the Bondi Winter Festival also got put on ice. Waverley Council’s events manager Shaun Munro said “the night market concept aligns with Council’s ongoing COVID-19 local business recovery efforts and is permissible under the current NSW Public Health Order (PHO).”
Mr Munro said the night markets had strong community support. “Organisers have engaged extensively with businesses and the broader community for several months now and are confident that local businesses, community groups, surf clubs, sporting organisations, local schools and residents are in full support of the night market concept.” If the April trial proves successful, then the concept could be taken to market in the form of a tender process. “There is the potential for ongoing benefits to local businesses, creative industries and community, as well as an additional revenue stream for Council,” Mr Munro said. The event is being run by Bondi-based events services company Premium Media and Bondi Junction-based video production and
content specialists, captiv8. They have been given a waiver on the regular fee for holding an event on the Bondi beachfront, which the council says would be $30,000 to $80,000. The markets will demonstrate “how councils can support their community by opening up carpark and public space,” according to a document from captiv8 tabled at the last full meeting of Waverley Council. Stallholders have a choice of spaces either 3 metres or 6 metres square. There will be around 20 food stalls and they will be located in the car park, while other vendors will be in
the grassed areas. Local community groups will be given four free stalls to operate raffles or games of skill. The captiv8 document said promotions of the event will include flags along Campbell Parade and a digital media campaign “to communicate the goals and style of Bondi Night Market to the immediate and extended community.” Want to get involved? Get in touch with Mike Corté of captiv8 on 0414 561501, mike@captiv8.com.au

Have you been treated unfairly in an inheritance matter ?
It is so important to have a Will, and that Will must be professionally written according to law.
The problem is that the courts are full of people arguing about the structure and format of wrongly written Wills. I see this all the time and its horrible. A Will is a complex document, and you need to have it written by a lawyer that specialises in Wills and Estates law. That’s what we do at Aussie Wills & Estates. There is no such thing as a simple Will, so forget about cheap do it yourself or online Wills. Trusts, administration, Estate Planning Documents, Probate, are all very complex issues that need professional care. OFF TO A FLYING START The Professional Services Group are new on the network scene but made up for that with almost 40 delegates attending their first Community Network Night at Double Bay’s Golden Sheaf on Thursday, February 11.
The event took place in the Canopy Room and featured Guest Speaker Robyn Monro Miller, CEO of Kids Giving Back, a local charity that gives kids aged 6-18 the chance to assist vulnerable people in the community by providing voluntary help to local charities.
Robyn with children preparing food for a local charity that feeds the needy.
Our goal, said Robyn, is to create a ripple effect throughout the community educating, influencing and empowering children and their families with the concept of “Giving Back”. Robyn enthralled the guests by explaining that children are born altruistic and get an endorphin hit when they are helping people. People who’ve been offered a sticky piece of half eaten sandwich, by an enthusiastic child, will recognise the glow in their eyes as they offer this tasty gift. She went on to explain that this response is hard wired into all people, irrespective of age, and when practiced regularly becomes addictive. Regular networkers sometimes talk of “Giver’s Gain”, where the offer of a helping hand is often reciprocated and eventually becomes part of the culture of their network group. And, of course, everyone knows the phrase “What goes around comes around”.
Dave Sharma pops in to visit Tony Smythe at Eastside Radio 89.7 FM
There was plenty of laughter as these things were explained and people grasped the truth of what she was saying. Later in the
evening we saw several instances of people acting on her words. This was wonderful as delegates at the event came from all sections of the community including finance, health care, real estate, marketing, gardening, education, local council, public relations, professional music, childrens’ coaching, travel and tours, the legal profession, electrical services, beauty and fashion, investment services, a local art gallery, removal services and even a personal chauffuer. If you attended, and we’ve left out your category, let me know and we’ll announce it at our next meeting on Thursday, 1March 11, from 5pm at the Golden Sheaf in Double Bay. It was great to see so many people, from all walks of life, all together in one place enjoying themselves and making business connections. We know from those who attended that, after the event, many got in touch with people they met to pursue business interests and one person even commented he was surprised at “how many nice people I met”. Our guest speaker at the next event will be Tony Smythe, Managing Director of “Eastside Radio 89.7 FM”. It’s a community icon and has been broadcasting since 1983. Need to cut costs
Waverley Council is starting a cost-cutting review after failing to meet its cost-ratio benchmark, forcing the council to dip into its reserves. While the council’s overall financial position remains healthy, a report tabled at a full meeting of Council emphasized “the need to address operating expenditure and revenues over the medium to long term. To this end, staff have established a ‘service review program’ to identify opportunities for improving service provision and effectiveness, operational efficiencies and cost reduction.” The review of costs and operational efficiencies will be a long-term program, taking 18 months to two years.
Bronte lighting plan opposed
A group of residents have taken a dim view of the council’s proposal to install lighting poles along part of its Bronte Cutting footpath extension project. Calling themselves the Bronte Cutting Anti-Light Group, they presented council with a 75 signature petition opposing the lighting plans, arguing it is needless because current lighting on the cutting is satisfactory.
Resurfacing on South Street, Edgecliff
In 2021 multiple streets in Paddington, Edgecliff, Bellevue Hill and Point Piper are being resurfaced with a sustainable asphalt product called Reconophalt - a mix of recycled plastic, glass and recycled asphalt that reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfill, while providing a road surface stronger than traditional asphalt. The new locations resurfaced will take the total area covered across Woollahra to 45,385m2, incorporating 5,296,579 plastic bags, 821,029 glass bottles, 143,682 toner cartridges and creating a carbon dioxide saving equivalent to keeping 32 cars off the road for a year.
Restrictions eased at Woollahra Libraries
Following changes to NSW Health guidelines, Woollahra libraries at Double Bay, Paddington and Watsons Bay have moved to the next phase of reopening.

Fighting the Pagewood Green development
Randwick Council has called for a halt on Meriton’s plans for a 383-unit development at Pagewood until its community impacts are properly examined.
Meriton has submitted a development application for Stage 2 redevelopment of the Pagewood Green site located in the Bayside Council Local Government Area. It proposes two towers, one 16 storeys high, the other 17 storeys, containing 383 units.
He said grounds for objection included excessive building height, Inadequate assessment of transport impacts and ambiguous commitment to delivery of public space. Councillors agreed to the Mayor’s motion that Council write to Bayside Council, the Minister for Planning & Public Spaces and Minister for Transport “urging a halt to this development until the infrastructure and capacity issues are addressed.”
Randwick Council is removing most of the four hour beachside parking restrictions introduced in January following a big community backlash. Running the program are Allan Sparkes, a former NSW Police officer and former Deputy Commissioner for NSW Mental Health Commission, and Dr David Said, a medical expert with 22 years’ clinical experience with the military. They run a mental health program aimed specifically at people who work in frontline emergency settings.
“When the crowds leave at the end of the day, it’s our lifeguards who are left to mentally unpack any incidents that may have occurred at our beaches,” said Mr du Plessis, pictured with Allan Sparkes (middle) and Dr Said.

As the first vaccines are rolled out across NSW and Australia, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for doing their part to keep our community safe and healthy. In particular, I would like to thank all of our front line workers who have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic. While this is a very exciting time, the vaccine rollout will not happen overnight, and it is vitally important that we continue to abide by social distancing and hygiene guidelines in order to prevent another large-scale outbreak in NSW.
STAMP DUTY AND LAND TAX REFORMS
Mayor Danny Said told a full meeting of Randwick Council: “Due to the site’s close proximity to our LGA, I am concerned about the significant increase in population, and the added demand this will place upon community facilities and services, open space and other physical and social assets within Randwick City.”
Backflip on four-hour parking
Matt du Plessis, Waverley Council’s Lifeguard Services and Beach Safety Manager, said taking care of one’s mental health and learning how to deal with emergencies emotionally is just as important as the physical training Waverley lifeguards undertake.
The number of people allowed into each library has increased, limited casual seating is available, study spots can be booked at Double Bay and Paddington, guest passes have been reintroduced, and printing and scanning services are available.
RANDWICK
In last year’s budget, the Treasurer outlined his plan to phase out stamp duty by the 2024/25 financial year, and to introduce a land tax. This is a significant change to the structure of State taxation in NSW and will impact people in very different ways depending on their home ownership status and future home ownership/ investment plans. There is a consultation period currently open, that will close on March 15th, 2021 and I want to hear what you think about these significant changes. You can do so by scanning the QR code and filling out my quick survey.
The objective of the four hour zones was to increase beach turnover while public health orders were in place. But many residents without private parking were outraged, complaining on Facebook about being forced to move their cars every four hours. Responding to the community opposition, Council has removed four hour parking signs in Ocean St, Eastbourne Ave and Donnellan Circuit in Clovelly. And it has resolved to remove four hour parking signs on Marine Pde, Maroubra, Wolseley Rd, Coogee and Pine Ave, Little Bay. Meanwhile, new “permit holders exempted” zones will be created in Arcadia St, Major Stand Neptune St, Coogee. The about-face over the four hour signage was announced at a meeting of Council’s Traffic Committee. A report tabled at the meeting said “a number of community members raised concerns with the Council about the impacts of the new time limits especially along the residential streets fronting the coast.”
