To keep everyone in NSW safe, New Year’s Eve celebration arrangements will be different this year.
Oh I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend (Or was it “Covid times when I could not meet my friends?”) And now here we are in the wettest March in 60 years. Well at least we’ve been spared the threatened problems of empty dams. “Ah says a friend, but we still have global warming, I’ve got a graph of the last 110 years, I’ll send it to you.” “I’ll be interested to see it” I replied. Sure enough it certainly shows that things are getting hotter. But it’s only 110 years I’m thinking, and the world is currently thought to be 4.543 billion years old. So it’s a bit like a day as a percentage of an 80 year lifetime. That’s just 0.00342%. Would a longer sample size be useful? And the graph’s not the whole world, it’s only Australia. And if 110 years is too short, how many years should we look at? And where to look so that measurements aren’t affected by things like La Nina and El Nino? Well, a graph of Greenland Ice Core temperatures (seen below) over the last 10,000 years offers a different perspective and even mentions the Medieval warming when grapes were happily being grown in London to make local wine. Like all research, it’s findings are open for discussion, but it still gives an interesting alternative perspective.
A little closer to home, we mention that the recently formed Professional Services Group now runs a monthly Community Network Night on the second Thursday of each month at the Golden Sheaf in Double Bay. Everyone is welcome, so please feel free to come along and join in the fun. Next dates are April 8 and May 13. While on the topic of Double Bay you are also invited to catch up on local Double Bay and Woollahra area news on www.doublebayareanews.org - If you’d like to help publish news on this website email news@easternsuburbslife.com We wish all our readers a wonderful Easter and remind everyone that the clocks go back at 3am on Sunday, April 4.

That means gatherings of no more than 30 people and keeping a towel length distance from others while using beaches.
As well as patrolling beaches, the ambassadors will gently oversee social distancing and group gathering requirements at selected parks and reserves, the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk, picnic tables, BBQs, outdoor seating areas, fitness stations and playgrounds. Introducing the ambassadors at a press call at Bondi beach, Mayor Paula Masselos urged beachgoers to be vigilant. “We can all enjoy our beautiful parks and beaches when everyone cooperates,” she said. “If a beach or other outdoor space looks busy, please come back another time or use that time to visit one of our many local businesses.”

Councillor Masselos said information on the crowd status of major beaches was available on the Waverley Council website and social media channels. There are also advisory messages at bus stops, train stations and on main roads.

Wearing “No Matraville Incinerator” T-shirts, protestors brandished freshly-printed posters and a diagram showing where the toxic plume will go. Randwick City’s Mayor, Danny Said, who also attended the protest, said:
We are three young guys striving to deliver a unique customer experience in a bike shop. Giuliano is a bike lover since the age of 11. After working as a treasurer for global corporations he moved to Australia where he could get back to his passion and worked for a few years as a bike mechanic before launching Bondi Bike Shop. Yuri is an Electric engineer and has been working alongside Giuliano as a bike mechanic for almost two years. He is our E-bike Specialist.

“There are absolutely no community benefits. This area has copped more than its share of industrial pollution for decades. Enough is enough!”
Diego, our head in marketing, was Giuliano's classmate at university and has collected a vast knowledge about business through the years adding lots of value to the team.
Member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, agreed. He said: “The Port Botany area is one of the most polluted areas of the country and we don’t need any more damaging emissions spewing over our community.”
Our main goal is to be able to offer a great service to our customers, becoming a reference of quality, transparency and customer service in the bicycle marketplace. The only way to achieve this is to work hard, step by step, strengthening our base to scale when we are ready.
Former Mayor and local pharmacist Noel D’Souza said the waste burned by the incinerator would impact people throughout Randwick LGA and beyond. “This incinerator is a threat to air quality for the people of Sydney generally,” he said. “The diffused gases and pollutants know no borders and these pollutant gases and irritants will become a health hazard for all.”

The man whose name is synonymous with Matraville, Noel D’Souza, is about to retire. Well, kind of.

Meanwhile, he is looking forward to the next state election, when he will have another shot at winning the State Seat of Maroubra as an Independent.
Noel hands over the reins of his business on December 14. “It’s a bitter-sweet moment because although I am happy to be retiring, EASTERN SUBURBS I will miss the challenges of business,” he said. He established his first pharmacy at the northern end of Bunnarong Rd in 1984 and in 1987 shifted to the centre of Matraville, where he opened a second shop alongside The Commonwealth Bank. During that time, he has notched up many achievements of great benefit to the community, including: • Giving booze-swilling beach hoons their marching orders by banning alcohol consumption on beaches and reserves in Coogee. • Building of an all-inclusive playground and skate park at Chifley. • The underground Coogee Beach facilities.

And the winner is Sydney – no, not the Olympics but the International Ad Agency of the Year. It was 1988 and Advertising Age newspaper in America, the agency bible at the time, proclaimed Mojo the holder of this auspicious title - an Australian first.
PADDO HONOURS ITS MOJO
Paddington local Alan 'Mo' Morris co-founded the iconic Mojo advertising agency with his brother Don and Allan 'Jo' Johnston. Apparently such was the agency's renown in the late '70s and '80s, that when clients flew in from across the world and asked any Sydney Airport taxi to 'take me to Mojo', they'd be driven straight there. And where this renowned agency once stood, in Underwood Street, Paddington - now the site of charming café The Bonython - a plaque was recently unveiled by Woollahra Council to honour Alan Morris. The Mojo team sought creative freedom and became Australia's greatest admen. Their credo was based on the ordinary bloke, mateship and unpretentiousness and they became the creatives behind some of the nation’s most memorable campaigns that helped define our nation. Famous Mojo slogans included: “You oughta be congratulated” (for margarine Meadowlea), “I feel like a Tooheys” (Tooheys draft beer),“C’mon, Aussie, C’mon” (Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket) and “Come and Say G'Day” for Tourism Australia. And local audiences responded overwhelmingly to these catchy jingles sung in Jo’s distinctively Aussie voice - resulting in smash hits on the music charts and what came to be known as 'public anthems'. From nothing, these modern day balladeers grew to an agency of 65 people and over $65m in billings, then merged and opened offices in London, Singapore, New York, San

Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore and affiliates throughout Asia. No other Australian agency has succeeded in doing that - before or since. It's estimated that billings of around $500m ended up
being brought in for the merged, expanded agency. And no other agency has succeeded in composing a significant part of the soundtrack of Australian life. Paula Towers

DAVE SHARMA
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH 2021 PROMISES TO BE A YEAR OF TRANSITION
The COVID-19 vaccine is being rolled out, our economic recovery from COVID-19 continues, and Australia is as well-placed as any other country in the world coming out of this crisis. Unemployment levels are down to 5.8%, with 90,000 Australians finding or increasing work between January and February this year. In less than 12 months from when the COVID-19 recession began, there are now more jobs in the Australian economy than there were before the start of the pandemic. As we move forward to a new normal, lots more is happening in Wentworth. Here’s a snapshot of what I’ve been up over the past few weeks.
LOKAHI FOUNDATION OPENING
Last month I attended the opening of The Lokahi Foundation in Bondi Junction – an organisation that is empowering women in the Eastern Suburbs to reclaim their lives after domestic violence. I was so pleased to help the Foundation secure $180,000 of Federal Government funding to expand their services. Founder and CEO, Rachael Natoli, is an inspiring community leader who formed Lokahi in 2016 after leaving a long-term abusive relationship. Rachael told me that she couldn’t have survived the stress and difficulty of leaving without the support of her caseworker, who went above and beyond in the level of care she provided. Rachael said that if everyone had a caseworker like hers,
more DV victims would leave for good and rebuild their lives independently. And so, the idea for Lokahi was born. I want to thank Rachael and the entire team for their leadership – the work they are undertaking will no doubt change lives.
PHASE 1B OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE Over 1,000 GP clinics started the next round of COVID-19 vaccinations last week, with an additional 4,000 clinics coming on board by the end of April as part of Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine programme.
Dave with the Founder & CEO of The Lokahi Foundation, Rachael Natoli, at their office opening
Phase 1B of the rollout includes anyone aged 70 years or over, along with more healthcare and frontline workers, and people with particular medical conditions. The GP clinics that will commence vaccinations in and around Wentworth from Monday, March 22, 2021 are: • Bondi Respiratory Clinic, Bondi Junction • Double Bay Doctors • Cooper Street Clinic, Double Bay • Paddington Family Practice • Woollahra General Practice • Rose Bay Medical Practice • Coogee Family Medical Centre
Local, State and Federal Government have come together to fund a brand new cycleway for Oxford Street.
ROADS FUNDING
Many people are eager to roll up their sleeve to get the jab, so please be patient while booking your spot. Every Australian will have the opportunity to get vaccinated over the coming months.
Hundreds of road safety projects are rolling out across NSW, in a more than $400 million blitz designed to reduce road trauma and save lives. Wentworth is receiving over $23 million worth of upgrades, including funding for a brand new cycleway in Sydney’s east!
To find out when you are eligible and clinics near you, take the eligibility checker quiz here: covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/eligibility.
Joint local, state and federal funds will deliver a continuous cycleway network from Centennial Park to the city leading to
improved safety, street beautification and traffic calming. This is a good outcome for the local community. With plans for an Oxford Street cycleway between Paddington Gates and Taylor Square now underway, I will be pushing for the removal of the COVID-19 pop-up cycleway on Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street, and the return of parking spaces for local residents.
Nominations are open for the Woollahra Design Excellence Awards, which acknowledge examples of buildings and places that make an excellent contribution to the character and heritage of Woollahra. Local residents and their architects, planners, builders or consultants are encouraged to nominate residential or commercial buildings from within the Woollahra local government area. Awards nominations close 21 May. TOO LOUD, TOO LONG
Dave Sharma MP with Eastside MD Tony Smythe.
EASTSIDE STORY: Growing community success Every week, 90,000 people tune into local station Eastside Radio, growing to 200,000 listeners a month and attracting increasing interest from local sponsors. An established cultural icon, the community station has a loyal following – over 30,000 people listen exclusively to Eastside Radio while its social media is 15,000-20,000. “We have a busy presence on social media, positioning us at the forefront of community radio stations worldwide. We’re streaming online and available On Demand with an expanding international presence,” says Eastside MD Tony Smythe. “We’re also available on digital radio – just search for Eastside Radio in your car or on your digital radio at home. We also love stepping outside of the studios too and don’t mind throwing a festival or two!” Drawing even more interested listeners are compelling new programs and podcasts. “We’re incredibly excited about the launch of Breaking Waves, a new half-hour program that gives an under-represented sector of the community a voice and chance to be heard. Produced by Ruth Hessey, the team of six presenters aim to challenge society to think outside the mainstream and see all the positive impacts and benefits people with a disability can give to the community – as well as a chance to have their voice heard,” Smythe highlights. Tune in every Monday at 6pm for this show. Another universal story is the open discussion and personal account of social drinking and alcoholism. “An Ordinary Australian” is a podcast produced by Laurent Auclair and features Mark Bennett, who, after three decades of alcohol use and abuse, is now sober and ready to share his personal journey. From ordinary social alcoholism to the devastating emotional impact on personal and professional relationships, this affects many of us. The four part series can be downloaded from the Eastside Radio website. With a firm focus on community, Eastside FM was established nearly 40 years ago, with the aim of being
an independent voice for the Eastern Suburbs and City of Sydney. Based in Paddington, it can be heard as far west as the Blue Mountains and around the world via online streaming. Eastside is a non-profit organisation and volunteer-run. With 150 volunteers including 100 presenters, it attracts enthusiastic locals as well as students for exciting and unique work experience. “Volunteering gives them the chance to be a part of a forward thinking and progressive media organisation,” explains Smythe.
The extent of damage to your hearing caused by noise depends on: Decibel level: How loud the sound is. Sounds at or below 70 decibels are generally considered safe. Any sound at or above 85 decibels is more likely to damage your hearing over time. Distance: How close you are to the source of the sound.A sound gets louder as you move closer to the source and softer as you move away from it. Move away from a loud sound to lower the risk of damage to your hearing is much lower. Time: The length of time you are exposed to the sound. Noises are more likely to damage your hearing if they are: • 85 decibels and last a few hours. • 100 decibels and last at least 14 minutes. • 110 decibels and last at least 2 minutes.
Many Eastside presenters and producers are Sydney-based musicians, DJs and artists at the forefront of Sydney’s creative scene. Others come from distinguished careers in politics, advertising, journalism, science and education, all of whom bring their variety of specialist knowledge to the programming as well as devoted listeners. This is part of what makes Eastside different to other community stations, says Smythe: “The way we care about our audience and the relationship they develop with our presenters,” he elaborates. “The wonderful music that you don’t hear anywhere else.” Eastside features many of the numerous jazz styles – as well as other music varieties including world music, blues, soul, funk, hip hop, electronic, French, Irish, experimental and gypsy, and presents over 90 programs each week. “We are the only station in Sydney to devote five mornings a week to supporting theatre, dance, film, design, literature, Indigenous, visual and other art forms. Every afternoon we focus on the issues that matter to the community.” “As the world becomes more global and information becomes increasingly overwhelming, people are wanting connection with something local and community spirited,” Smythe opines. “A station that cares about its audiences and feels like a family… Come on in. Everybody’s welcome.” www.eastsidefm.org Paula Towers
Many devices that children use today have noise levels much higher than 85 decibels. For example, music played through headphones at the highest volume is often 94-110 decibels. Recommendations for safer listening: • Lower the volume. Some music devices have the option for users to set volume control limits. • Move away from the noise. Don’t sit or stand right in front of concert speakers. • Wear hearing protectors, such as earplugs or earmuffs. A ‘SECRET’ DAY ON SYDNEY HARBOUR
Cross Street Cinema Complex
Part 3
So, off we went with 5 knot sou’ easter abeam, and with all sails set and six onboard, we had a nice run up to Shark Island, then a slight shift to starboard to bring us onto an easy reach out to the heads. The waters were slight, with no real chop or swell. Secret sliced her way gracefully forward doing almost wind speed, which by this time had picked up to about 5-6 knots. The wind settled in at about 10-12 knots and came around to a sou' sou' Easter. We had a great broad reach up to the heads, our white wake creaming away rapidly behind us. On any given Sunday there are numerous racing fleets out and about, including the famous CYCA fleet of up to 100 large Tupperware racers. The classic Sydney 18 footers (replica timber racing skiffs from the twenties) were out in force with their seriously over canvassed rigs and serious, calloused captains and crew. We watched the fleets start to make their way out of port and thought this would be a perfect time to get over to Chowder Bay to avoid being caught up in some more serious racing. So, broad reaching on a sou’ west heading, we made our way to the calm protected waters of the bay. Coming in we could see a large number of yachts and motor boats anchored and decided to put the engine in the well just in case. The Secret 20 is designed to have an electric outboard which will push her along at near hull speed for a couple of hours on ¾ revs with two batteries. With four or even eight batteries, which also increases the ballast, you could expect 5-8 hours total running time. There are options for solar panels or for a small generator to charge batteries on board, otherwise plug them in at home for a couple of hours after sailing. The recommended petrol engine is a 2 hp Honda 4-stroke which sits neatly in the well in the counter stern. It has a top mount 1 litre. fuel tank, which will run for 2 hours on 1/2 revs. This is my favourite engine in the world. It starts first go every time and never misses a beat but this time we didn’t need it. We brought in the foresail, left the staysail and started spilling wind out of the main. We came in to cheers and envious looks from many of the other people there. We managed to easily manoeuvre amongst the vessels at anchor without the engine and dropped the hook in 4’ to a sandy bottom. We lowered the yard, brailed the sail and boom nicely underneath and tied the halyard off at a height that would provide good seating headroom in the spacious cockpit. By now the sun was riding high and a quick swim and a cold beer was the order of the
moment. So in they all jumped. With all the ample storage space I keep two sets of flippers and snorkels onboard. These were put to good use over to the western side of the bay where it is very rocky and provides shelter for the many species of sub tropical fish that live in Sydney’s warm waters. While the pampered crew were frolicking about, I was laying out a small stern anchor for peace-of-mind, there was a large turn-out of boats, even for a Sunday. So, after our swimmers and adventurous snorkellers returned we grabbed towels, bags, food and drinks and waded ashore for a picnic on the beach. We stayed for a few hours, laughing and splashing about like little kids, but soon it was time to get back. We could have sailed off the anchor, although by then more boats had arrived and I thought we’d better use the engine. She started first go and took us just out of the bay where sails were hoisted, sheeted and off we went again. The course we decided on was to head for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House for some photo opportunities for the more artistic among our motley crew. This meant a southerly reach across to Shark Island, then we bore away and made our way upstream in style. The wind was a fresh 15-knot breeze by now and we were sitting on a very comfortable 6-plus knots. The Bridge, Opera house and Fort Denison quickly came into view and the cameras started snapping away. It was getting late as we turned to beat back to Rose Bay. For a gaffer, the Secret is remarkably close winded – a true 35 degrees with little leeway – and with the breeze still holding, a few tacks and we were in sight of the ramp. The Tupperware fleets had disappeared and the old salts on the 18 footers were likely back at the club with jugs of rum in front of them. The sun was setting over the beautiful city that is Sydney and I wasn’t quite sure whether it was the crew or the sun casting a warm glow over the boat. We soon arrived back at the ramp, I jumped ashore to get the car while the others held the boat off the jetty and started a chain to remove all the gear that didn’t live aboard. We got her on the trailer and de rigged her in 25 minutes. The day was over and a well satisfied crew all offered their thanks with smile (until I held my hand out and said ’that will be fifty dollars each please), which some took seriously. All said and done it was a very successful day. I’ll have the same again please!

Onto (3)Hermit Bay and Hermit Point which derives their name from a large house, known as (4)'The Hermitage,' behind this point. Originally built in 1840 by Alexander Dick, this property was turned into a Victorian Rustic Gothic house in the 1870s by Edward Mason Hunt. It was damaged by a fire in 1936, and was restored by Emil Sodersten. Then bought by the Woolworths company in 1964 and used as a staff training centre, but later returned to its original role as a private home. The Hermitage is owned by the family of Justin Hemmes.
The track takes me to (5)Strickland House, and secluded Milk Beach. Stickland House was designed in Victorian Italianate style by architect John Hilly. In the 20th century it was a women’s convalescent home and later became an aged care facility. Around the house are beautiful gardens and heritage listed dormitory and stables. In 2007 the grounds and house were used by Baz Luhrmann in filming parts of his movie "Australia", doubling as Government House, Darwin. It has also been used for film and TV shoots for Underbelly, The Apprentice and The Farmer Wants a Wife as well as for The Krait. A TV series called Flat Chat made an episode of the UK series The Minder.

A succession of private leaseholders lived at Greycliffe after the departure of Mrs and Mrs Gibbes. In 1911, the house was transferred to public ownership and given over by the NSW Govt for use as a hospital for babies and then as a mothercraft centre. In 1978, the house was added to the Sydney Harbour National Park along with the recreational area surrounding it known as Nielsen Park.

Part Three In this article we look beyond the commercial life of TS Mort to the true nature of the man himself. Certainly, he qualifies as a great patriot and one of the most “noble colonials”, but above all Thomas Mort was a great humanitarian. When Mort died at the young age of 61 in 1878, there was a massive outbreak of public grief. Statues, monuments and even a church were proposed and erected by the people in his memory; leading citizens eulogized about his great deeds, and the Sydney Mail even published a full page portrait of him for people to hang in their homes. As an example of his profound humanity we need go no further than his 1875 speech to 300 Sydney luminaries whom he had invited and sent by train to his meat works at Lithgow. To prove that frozen food could be preserved and in perfect condition, Mort had organised a feast of meat, game and fruits which had been frozen eighteen months before. Amid the triumph of this evening, he spoke as follows;“There shall be no more waste! Yes, gentlemen, I now feel that the time has arrived, or at all events is not far distant,
Science has drawn aside the veil, and the plan stands revealed. Faraday’s magic wand gave the key-note, and invention has done the rest (cheers). Climate, seasons, plenty, scarcity, distance will all shake hands, and out of the commingling will come enough for all; for ‘the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof’ and it is certainly within the compass of man to ensure that all His people shall be partakers of that fullness.” (Continued cheers).
which he pioneered, and which we take for granted today, has been a major boon to the consuming masses across the world and to producers alike. At St Mark’s we understand the nature of the divine inspiration that drove Thomas Mort to serve humanity to such an extent – it was his profound Christian faith and his love of his fellow man – an inspiration to us all. In this day and age it is common for people to misunderstand and even denigrate the profound influences of men like Mort. He was indeed a noble colonist and he changed the nature of land use and tenure in Australia forever. The main driver was the good he was doing for his fellow man and providing food security for the masses of
the world who had always been prone to periods of famine and starvation. Ian Tresise St Mark's Historical Society For more information please contact history@stmarksdp.org or visit https://stmarksdp.org/history/

HAVE YOUR SAY ON HOSPITAL SITE Waverley Council is inviting community comment on latest development plans for the heritagelisted War Memorial Hospital site.
outcomes.” With 12% of Waverley’s population aged over 65, “health care and accommodation for our seniors is a critical issue,” Councillor Masselos says.
The Development Control Plan, under which owners Uniting Care would create a large seniors housing precinct, is about to be placed on public exhibition for a month. Just click on the Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ web page or pick up a hard copy at the Customer Service Office.
Under the Development Control Plan, there will be a cluster of a dozen unit blocks at 99-117 Birrell Street, near the corner with Bronte Road. Those located beside the street will be four storeys, while others, set back into the estate, will be five storeys high.
Meanwhile, the 86-year-old hospital and other historic buildings on the site will be preserved as part of the ‘The War Memorial Hospital Campus,’ which is subject to a separate development proposal. The campus development would expand on the hospital’s current role as an aged care centre. This campus end of the site, facing Carrington Road, will have public access, while the seniors precinct at the other end of the block will be a gated community. The Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, encourages the community to have their say on the plans. She says the Development Control Plan aims to “continue the provision of the hospital and health-related uses on the campus and increase the capacity for existing aged care services and seniors housing whilst ensuring balanced social, environmental and heritage
The Development Control Plan says the five-storey blocks “will be “set back 15 metres from the boundary to maintain streetscape scale.” The building heights will complement “scale and character of existing heritage buildings” because the site is set on a hill. The housing precinct will be set at a lower level than the hospital and other historic buildings at the top of the hill and will therefore not dominate. Behind the unit blocks will be the precinct’s private gardens. Further up Birrell St, and accessible by the public, will be another set of gardens. Both public and private gardens will stocked with pollinator-friendly plant species so the site becomes a haven for birds and other wildlife, with “some shrubs and grasses planted in thickets to provide safe habitat for smaller shrub species.”
Meanwhile, there are a number of wellestablished Norfolk Island Pines at the site going back to its origins as the Edina Estate in the 1880s. The estate was established by a wealthy merchant called Ebenezer Vickery, whose former mansion, Edina, is set beside the hospital. Ebenezer went to Italy to source the finest Venetian chandeliers, beautiful marble fireplaces and other accoutrements for his dream home. And it appears he also headed to southern Italy, to the site of the
Pompeii volcano disaster. “The tiles which still grace the verandas and main hall of Edina came from the ancient ruins of Pompeii,” according to a Waverley Council history site. Do you have a valid Will in place to protect your assets and children? Did you know that two in five parents don’t have a Will, and that 52% of Aussie’s die without even considering such an important document? What happens to your kids if the worst happens to you? A Will dictates these types of outcomes, from schooling to parenting and beyond. The problem is that the courts are full of people arguing about the structure and format of wrongly written Wills. A Will is a complex document, and you need to have it written by a lawyer that specialises in Wills and Estates law. There is no such thing as a simple Will, so forget about cheap do-it-yourself or online Wills. Trusts, administration, Estate Planning Documents and Probate are all very complex issues that need professional care. On top of that, correct Estate planning will minimise your tax implications and make the administration of your Estate easy for your loved ones to handle. If you get it wrong it just becomes a big mess and you might as well have not written it in the first place, it may even end up costing your loved ones more than they bargained for, especially if someone wants to dispute the Will and it ends up in court. So, make sure you have an up-to-date Will, you review it at least every five years and most importantly make sure it’s written by a professional lawyer in the field of Wills and Estates.

CANDICE MEISELS: Bondi This International Women's Day, March 8, saw Candice Meisels officially awarded Bondi Mother of the Year by the Bondi & Districts Chamber of Commerce.
Mother of the Year
“I was totally surprised!” Candice says, who attended with one of her young daughters because she was interested in the event but didn't expect any award. However, Candice's modesty belies her many achievements.
In London, Candice worked for Disney. After taking extra subjects to finish her degree and qualifications more quickly, she became a PR manager at the young age of 23 years then by 25 she was working as Disney's European Associate PR Manager for Disney Interactive Studios. “I had to work on PR strategies and localisation with territory PR managers based
15
And how did she end up in Australia? As a teenager, Candice travelled here to visit family and fell in love with the country. Living in England, she encouraged her husband to look for job transfers to Australia. “Australia is similar to South Africa, where I grew up, but it is safer and offers so many amazing opportunities.” And what does she enjoy most about all her different challenges? “I like having a full, productive life, and I also like to be able to give back,” Candice enthuses.
Ambitious and focused, Candice is a PR Consultant with her eponymous business specialising in start-ups, small to medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs, giving them a voice. She works with a variety of media to achieve this – through TV, radio, print and online: “I love small business stories and decided to help them get their share of the media pie; I help come up with stories, angles and pitch them to media outlets.” She thus shares their stories, products and services with the media. Now a mother of five, before starting her family, she worked in large companies with global brands. “I was used to huge budgets and worked with teams. I lived in South Africa where I met my British husband and we moved to London.”

“Between my children, my pets and the business, we can give back in different ways; so just trying to make a difference in our community, in Australia and in our world, as much as I can.” When she grew up in South Africa, her parents – who are still there, brought her up in that way: “My mother, my grandmother, all gave back in their communities. And my mother still does. It’s definitely something that was passed down to me, those values, and that I hope to pass on to my daughters.” “I love Australia because of the lifestyle, the warmth of the people, the beauty, the land. We’re very, very blessed. We’ve been living here 10 years now and it’s definitely home.” in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the Nordic Regions.” Eager to share her knowledge with others, Candice wrote a book called “The Power of PR” which was published two years ago and most recently contributed to “Back Yourself” which came out in December. She was asked to write a story about the importance of storytelling.
TOGETHER WE GROW
This book features chapters by 27 Australian businesswomen. “Each has written a chapter on different topics to try and encourage other women to start their own businesses,” Candice explains. “Because that’s what the economy really needs at the moment – more businesses and more women to step up and back themselves.”
Thanks to support from people and organisations in the community, JNC — your local neighbourhood centre — can now offer you more. Randwick Council has big plans for Anzac Day, April 25. It is reviving the dawn service at Coogee with all the ceremonial trimmings so it becomes a $145,000, ticketed event. And veterans, their families and current military personnel will march down Coogee Bay Rd, with the Council promoting the event as "the alternative to the City Anzac Day commemorations."
ANZAC SPIRIT RETURNS TO COOGEE
participation and provide accessibility to vulnerable and less mobile people. Program for the dawn service includes a welcoming speech by Mayor Danny Said and a ‘Welcome to Country’ by a La Perouse Aboriginal Land Council elder. Guest speaker will be Adrian Sutter, CEO of Swiss8, a health promotion charity founded by combat veterans. There will also be singing performances by pupils from Claremont College in Randwick and Coogee South Public School.
The council plans to sell 3000 tickets through Event Brite, with priority seating allocations to current former servicemen and women. It says the Anzac Day ceremony and march will be important in “re-establishing a sense of community post-COVID.”
Cost of staging the Anzac services and march will be $145,000, almost double the 2019 budget of $77,000. In addition, a further $3500 will fund a video production featuring a monologue on war by Aboriginal film and television actor Luke Carroll.
Coogee Randwick Clovelly RSL sub-branch is organising the march, which will start at Coogee Diggers Club then proceed down Coogee Bay Rd to Goldstein Reserve on Arden St. Police will be assisting in necessary road closures. In addition, rangers and other council staff will ensure the march and other aspects of the event comply with the current COVID-19 Public Health Orders.
The video presents an impassioned speech from Tom Wright’s play Black Diggers and will be released in the lead-up to Anzac Day through the council’s website and social channels.
The council says the march “will fulfil a need in the community to have somewhere for service men and women and community members to march in the Eastern Beaches.” In the longer term, the goal is to draw in local RSL sub-branches that hold individual Anzac Day ceremonies. In Matraville, for instance, diggers march down part of Franklin St, then

around the corner to the RSL. Maroubra RSL also holds its own march and a dawn ceremony. While local traditions remain strong, Randwick Council hopes that in the longer term, the Coogee event might absorb such satellite events and help it consolidate as a competitor to the city march and ceremonies.
The Coogee service has attracted a large crowd in the past and has traditionally been one of the largest Anzac Day events held outside Sydney City. Like a lot of other events, the ceremony was cancelled last year due to COVID-19. However, a live online stream was broadcast and was watched by over 7,200 people. The upcoming event will also be livestreamed to widen the potential community
A report tabled the latest meeting of council said: “Hundreds of Indigenous servicemen fought for the British empire in the First World War – but are forgotten by many and this monologue by Luke Carroll aims to raise awareness of the ‘black digger.’” The report went on to say that the video would demonstrate the council’s “commitment to true reconciliation.”

Active Ageing Active ageing is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years.
Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow them to stay in their home environment. “Without hesitation, I highly recommend Home Sweet Home for in-home care
services and will use this excellent company for all my mother’s home care. As experienced nurses, Karen and Marella (the business owners) immediately understand the needs of the client and are able to effectively match the right care-giver to the situation. Furthermore, even when I had not engaged a care-giver, Karen and Marella generously provided their nursing advice and care recommendations to support my mother. What sets them apart from their competitors is their empathetic and knowledgeable care for their clients”.

20 COUNCIL NEWS WOOLLAHRA
Sculpture offers a spectacular vista in Vaucluse
Innovative sculpture Viewfinder has been installed in Vaucluse as part of Woollahra Council’s Public Art Program.

WAVERLEY
Microplastics awareness
Waverley Council is helping raise awareness of the microplastic particles polluting our oceans and other waterways.
RANDWICK
Food delivery drivers get parking spots
Food delivery drivers are to be given more user-friendly parking options in Randwick Junction under a six-month council trial running April to October 2021. There will be a number of changes to the signage on Arthur St, near the junction. The existing No Stopping on the southern side of Arthur St, west of Belmore Rd, will be reduced. And a ‘Motor Bikes Only’ parking sign (with associated line markings) will be installed on the southern side of Arthur St.
Located in Lighthouse Reserve,Vaucluse a popular cliffside recreation area with stunning ocean views, Viewfinder’s periscopic design reflects a unique view of the crashing waves directly below the cliff on which it is placed. Created by Sydney artist Joel Adler, the work was previously exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea in 2019, where it was awarded the People’s Choice Prize, Kids’ Choice Prize and Artists’ Pick Awards. Consisting of a glass mirror cantilevered by a galvanised steel frame, the 8.5 tonne sculpture provides scope for multiple return visits to observe changes in the reflection, due to varying weather, tides and lighting conditions. The acquisition of Viewfinder for an initial loan period of five years was endorsed by Woollahra Council’s Public Art Panel, bringing the total number of public artworks in the Woollahra Municipality to 19. For more information on Woollahra Council’s Public Art program, including a map of artwork locations, visit: www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/publicart
Bush tucker walks
It recently invited local environmental volunteers to a training day on Bondi Beach run by Ausmap on how to sample and analyse microplastic pollution. Ausmap, a project led by The Total Environment Centre and Macquarie University, is investigating microplastic pollution in Australian aquatic environments. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic debris, generally defined as 5mm or smaller in diameter, resulting from the breakdown of industrial waste and common consumer products such as plastic bottle tops, cigarette butts and textile fibres. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said fish and birds can ingest microplastics with devastating impacts on marine life. “The variety of microplastics that volunteers managed to find at Bondi Beach in just a short amount of time was a real eye opener and a sobering reminder of the need to limit single-use plastics and dispose of litter correctly at all times,” Mayor Masselos said.
Review of lighting strategy to limit artificial skyglow
Waverley Council will be looking at ways we can further incorporate key principles of ‘Dark Skies’ into civil and public buildings works. Dark Skies is a growing global movement that aims to prevent, reduce and limit artificial skyglow [light pollution] in the night sky caused by artificial light.
Council’s award-winning Bush Tucker Walk program has returned, offering the opportunity to discover native plants and foods and explore Indigenous cultural sites at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse on Sat, April 10 and Cooper Park in Bellevue Hill on Apri1 13. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/events for more information and to book.
School holiday fun
Woollahra Libraries are hosting a series of engaging events for kids aged 5-12 these school holidays, from Tues, April 6 to Fri, April 16. For full event listings or to register, visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/schoolholidays
Councillors have voted in favour of an investigation into how Dark Skies principles can be included in Council’s own works and on private land, and how they can be applied in Council’s upcoming Environmental Action Plan. A posting on the Waverley Council website explains how artificial skyglow can be reduced through a number of key measures including: 1. Directing light downwards, not upwards; 2. Using shielded fittings; 3. Using asymmetrical floodlights as opposed to general wide beam floodlights.
Mill Hall centre under renovation
The Mill Hill Community Centre in Bondi Junction is closed for renovations. When completed in March-April next year, the works will create a revitalised precinct alongside the Boot Factory.
“Council officers will monitor the new parking arrangements to help inform future transport initiatives relating to the food delivery industry,” said a report tabled at the last meeting of Council.
Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! The COVID-19 restrictions continue to lift across New South Wales, but it is so important that we don’t let our guard down, especially as the vaccine rollout faces delays. Please keep to social distancing and wearing a mask to prevent another large-scale outbreak in NSW.
SEVERE WEATHER AND FLOODING The end of March saw extreme weather and torrential rainfall across much of NSW, and our thoughts are with the thousands of people across the state who were impacted by the rain and subsequent flooding.
Port noise remains a mystery
An investigation into noise complaints raised by residents in the Matraville, Little Bay, Chifley, La Perouse and Pagewood areas during winter 2020, has been unable to identify a specific significant source for the noise complaints. The NSW Ports commissioned investigation identified a number of factors which appear to have contributed to the level of noise including noise from ships, port operations, road traffic, construction activities and nearby industrial activities. Council will continue to work with NSW Ports and the EPA, industry representatives and stakeholder forums to follow up the recommendations of the report and to manage noise.
Action on urban heat island effect
South Ward councillor Noel D’Souza has called for Randwick Council to address the ‘urban heat island effect’ which raises temperatures in built-up areas. Councillor D’Souza said the problem could be addressed by more rooftop gardens and use of porous building materials which promote a cooling evaporation cycle as opposed to the impervious materials currently in popular use. “Without a cycle of flowing and evaporating water, these surfaces have nothing to cool them down,” he told a full meeting of Randwick Council.
I would like to extend a massive thank you to our emergency service fire fighters, the SES, and our surf lifesavers who have all been involved in helping people manage the impact of this once if 50 year storms. These wonderful volunteers and public servants form the backbone of our disaster response, and I couldn’t be prouder to have them as part of our community. If you have the means to give to those who have been affected by the floods, I would strongly encourage you to do so to help these families recover.
COMMUNITY SURVEY
There are so many things that are important to our diverse community. From health and education services, to our public transport network, to overdevelopment, as well as climate change and environmental protection, so I want to hear from you!
More Aboriginal focus likely for museum
La Perouse Museum is likely to strike for more of balance between the area’s French and Aboriginal histories after receiving a series of submissions to a two month curatorial review held recently. Currently the museum gives more space to exhibits commemorating the historically fleeting visit by French explorer Lapérouse than it does to the area’s Aboriginal heritage. This was highlighted in the submissions, one of which suggested a dedicated indigenous focus, renaming it Australia’s First Nations Museum and Educational Centre.
