ANZAC DAY CELEBRATIONS AT RESTORED CENOTAPH On Sunday, April 18, the Paddington Woollahra RSL Sub Branch held its ANZAC Service at the newly refurbished Cenotaph on Oxford Street, Paddington.

to reflect outside at the newly refurbished cenotaph.

It has been many years since a service was held at the cenotaph due to the uneven surface and the restricted access.

The commemorative address was delivered by Brigadier Glen Ryan from Victoria Barracks who touched on the local men and women who served during the Great War and whose names are etched in memory on the cenotaph.

In 2019 the Paddington Woollahra RSL Sub branch approached various state and local government agencies seeking assistance in restoring the cenotaph to its former glory. Paddington Woollahra RSL Sub Branch Hon Treasurer Andrew Shurety took the initiative to organise the various government bodies over the past two years to return the cenotaph to its former lustre. The service was attended by many dignitaries, Brigadier Glen Ryan, CEO RSLNSW (ret. COL) John Black, RSM Warrant Officer Class 1 Brent Doyle, Royal Australian Navy Chaplain Andrew Nixon, COL James Roberts, Major Steven Foenander, school children from Glenmore Road Public School and Sub Branch members from Paddington Woollahra and Smithfield RSL Sub Branches. There were many families and friends of veterans who came together to remember those Eastern Suburbs and Paddington Service men and women who have gallantly paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The event was also attended by many local Eastern Suburbs contemporary veterans who also paid their respects to those that have since passed. COVID restrictions in 2020 delayed any service for Paddington Woollahra RSL Sub Branch so this was the perfect opportunity

Apologies were received from Mayor Woollahra Council Susan Wynne and Mayor City of Sydney Council Clover Moore.

The service was well supported by the Royal Australian Navy Band accompanied by the excellent vocal performance of Able Seamen Leigh Robke who dutifully and beautifully gave a rendition of the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems in an Indigenous and an English version. The service concluded with Chaplain Andrew Nixon offering his blessing on the cenotaph. After the service everyone adjourned to the Paddo RSL to enjoy light refreshments and to observe the presentation of 50 years continuous service to the NSW RSL and current Paddington-Woollahra Sub Branch Vice President Able Seamen John Unicomb for his hard work to the veterans and the community of the Eastern Suburbs.

DAVE SHARMA

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH

On May 11, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will deliver the Coalition Government’s eighth budget since we came to Government at the 2013 election. It will be the one of the most important budgets in our nation’s history.

The 2021-22 Budget will lay out the next phase of Australia’s economic recovery plan, to grow our economy so we can deliver the jobs and guarantee the essential services that Australians rely on, and continue to keep Australians safe. In 2020, Australians were tested like never before. Flood, drought, fires, and a global pandemic. So many Australians, through no fault of their own, did it tough. Australia’s economic recovery is well underway, so far recovering 85% of its COVIDinduced fall, six months earlier and twice as fast as we might have expected in last year’s October Budget. As of mid-March unemployment is down to 5.6%, and there are now more jobs for Australians than there were prior to the pandemic. 87,000 new jobs were created in the month of February. The Australian economy’s overall contraction through this pandemic was only 1.1%, the smallest of any advanced economy. Jobs are now above the level they were before COVID-19 and we have continued to maintain our AAA credit rating - one of only nine countries in the world to do so. In the last

10 months alone, 947,100 Australians have gone back to work. There are more Australians in work today than before when COVID hit. Female workforce participation is now at a record 61.8%, above pre-COVID levels. Programs such as JobKeeper and JobSeeker helped support businesses and workers through the tough economic times of lockdowns and closed borders. Australia is leading the world out of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global recession it has caused. That is a sobering achievement. Our economic recovery plan, the second phase of that which will be in the Treasurer’s Budget, is geared to keeping our economy on that right track. This is a plan that retains a clear focus on lower taxes, competitive policy settings for Australian industry, sensible industrial relations settings, deregulation, open trade, open markets. A plan that very much puts business and the private sector in the driver’s seat for a durable and strong economic recovery. I look forward to providing you with all the updates from Parliament during Budget week. Make sure to follow me on my Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages (@DaveSharma) where I will be breaking down what the Budget means for you. And as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office via dave.sharma.mp@aph.gov.au or 9327 3988. My team and I are always happy to assist.

Did you know you can put food scraps into your green lid bin? If everybody did this, we would slash the amount of waste we send to landfill by half and create nourishing compost instead.

IT’S EASY, HERE’S HOW: • Pop your food scraps into your green lid bin, along with garden organics. You can use a compostable bag or newspaper to wrap your scraps, but please no plastic bags. • Put your green lid bin out for collection each week. Any type of food scrap is accepted including fruit and vegetables, meat and bones, dairy, grains – and more. For a full list of what can and can’t go in your green bin visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/ kitchentocompost

It is sometimes also called 'deafblindness', though some people only use this to refer to more severe impairments. Between 9 and 21 % of adults over 70 have some level of dual sensory impairment.

A moving quote attributed to Helen Keller is “Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people." Helen Keller reminds us of the preciousness of our primary sense of hearing.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA We continue to explore the important contributions of past parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point. THOMAS SUTCLIFFE MORT -

Part Four In this final article on the life of TS Mort, we continue to discuss the true nature of the man who had so much impact on the commercial viability of our emerging industries – wool, meat, dairying, mining, shipping and more which were enabled by his active participation and quiet genius. In this day and age it is fashionable to decry the impact of colonisation. Certainly, there are many aspects of the migration of hordes of Europeans on these shores which are shameful and even despicable. This unfortunately was true of all society in those days. Life was incredibly tough and uncertain. In our relative comfort these days it is hard to imagine the uncertainty and misfortune that readily impacted lives. Accidents, high infant mortality, pestilence and starvation were ever-present threats. It is important that the young today understand how fortunate we are in the 21st Century, due to the inspired endeavours of people like Mort. In TS Mort’s day it was common for a woman to bear ten children and lose three or four before adulthood. There were no publicly-funded hospitals and no social welfare if the bread winner was not there, almost all welfare was provided

by philanthropy and mutual societies were formed to provide rudimentary income protection and insurance. The income tax which funds many of these safety nets today was only introduced in 1915 in Australia, making us one of the first nations to universally fund public welfare.

It was in this environment that TS Mort supported and influenced the lives of so many. His commitment to others ranged from dispensing his own homeopathic medicines, to being a founder of the great AMP society, and to showing others how to prosper and create savings from those industries he initiated. His impact and example were profound. According to historian, Laurelle Pacey OAM, even in refuge at Bodalla on the south coast of NSW, where he loved to rest with his family of ten children, he devoted “considerable energy and capital to turning dairying from a cottage industry into a factory system where milk for a number of different farms was manipulated to produce a uniform product that rivalled English cheese imports” and eventually led to the supply of fresh milk when preserved by refrigeration to Sydney. It is indeed extraordinary that when he died in Bodalla in 1878, Mort had created a new community of share farmers working so harmoniously with the indigenous custodians that more than 300 Australian First Nations Yuin people attended his simple funeral coming from Moruya, the Bay, or Eurobodalla to pay their respects to this great human being.

Through a profound humanity and his great Christian faith, Thomas Mort had found a way to share the benefits of European progress and industry with the indigenous custodians while respecting their society and traditions. A respect returned to this fine individual by possibly the largest assembly of the local Yuin people ever at his funeral. This concludes our brief introduction to the wonderful life of Thomas Mort. Next month, we will look more closely at another builder of modern Australia parishioner from St Mark’s, reflecting on the extraordinary life of Sir Thomas Mitchell.

YOUR EYESIGHT IS PRECIOUS Some people see the world through rose-coloured glasses but for photographic artist Ralph Kerle the world is an even more beautiful place. Thanks to a corneal transplant donor, he is seeing it through someone else’s eyes!

Ralph will tell his insightful story on May 13 to the professional service group, the “Network Nighters” at the Golden Sheaf at Double Bay and how his experience has prompted him to become a proud supporter of Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation, the charity which supports Sydney Eye Hospital. Ralph will describe how his career in performing arts was looking bright when he started to lose sight in his right eye. He was diagnosed with keratoconus, a progressive thinning of the cornea, which causes it to distort and blur vision. "I was incredibly fortunate to find an authority in corneal transplants, Dr Lyon Robinson who has now retired, at Sydney Eye Hospital. He was absolutely fantastic. I found services to support me and for the first time, I felt hope. It was an enormous relief.” Ralph's current ophthalmologist is Dr Con Petsoglou who, as well as performing corneal surgery, is also the deputy director of the NSW Tissue Bank based at Sydney Eye Hospital, which includes eye and tissue donations. Doctors like Dr Petsoglou rely on Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation to fund vital equipment, support frontline staff and life

changing research to benefit the thousands of patients presenting in outpatient clinics and for surgery at the major referral centre of eye disease in NSW. The Foundation, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and is extremely proud that in that time it has given over $20 million to the Eye Hospital, thanks to community support. This year it has set its sights on upgrading its patient centred clinical unit and three pieces of equipment urgently needed are three ultrasounds for detailed imaging of retina and optic nerves, 21 new slit lamp patient chairs and new patient self-serve kiosks to improve patient flow. The Fellowship Program is also an important project relying on the generosity of donations. This provides outstanding clinicians who will become the next generation of ophthalmic leaders, unparalleled access to the best in medical and surgical ophthalmology training.

Eight Fellows are funded annually to work side-by-side pre-eminent leaders in the field and help train junior doctors. Ralph wishes he could thank the anonymous person who donated their eye tissue and happily says how grateful he is to those generous and community minded who support the Foundation. “Supporters of the Foundation are giving people, like me, a future. They are helping somebody to have a better and fulfilled life.” “Sydney Eye Hospital is one of the world’s best kept secrets. If you have anything

Hello to all my ESL friends,

I begin my walk at Macquarie Lighthouse which is the longest continuously operating site of a navigational beacon in Australia since 1794 and the site of the first lighthouse to be built in Australia in 1818. The current heritage-listed lighthouse was completed in 1883. The lighthouse and associated buildings were designed by James Barnet and built from 1881 to 1883.

It's just wonderful to see live music, dancing, singing happening again, and cafes full of families and friends. We are so lucky to be here in this wonderful country and this city with all the waterways, harbour and beautiful beaches around us. Hope everyone is having a good start to the month. If you need any advice or decisions to make please dont hesitate to phone me 0414 273 104.

7 Further along the reserve is South Head Signal Station, established January 20, 1790 by Capt. John Hunter as a 'Lookout Post' with huts and a flagstaff to signal to the Governor when a ship appeared in the offing. The present sandstone tower was part built in the 1840's by Mortimer Lewis, and completed in the 1890's. The Station ceased as a government instrumentality in 1992. Fortifications by the station were originally built to accommodate a 9.2 inch breech loading disappearing gun' as part of Sydney's coastal defence.

My walk tokes me to Gap Park with spectacular views out to the Tasman Sea and Manly and Sydney CBD. Along the track is the Don Ritchie Grove was established in memory of Don Ritchie OAM who officially rescued 160 people from suicide at the Gap in Sydney an area which is known for its multiple suicide attempts.

The Dunbar was wrecked about 500 yarde south of this spot in a heavy north east gale at night Aug. 20th 1857. From a total of 122 there was only one survivor. Along a path on your left, in Gap Park, parallel to Military Rd, is a sign that marks the spot where the Watsons Bay tramline began in 1894..The last tram ran in 1960, and was the last to be converted to buses.

As I turn left onto Military Rd, I stop by Nautica Restaurant, which was once the famous Gap Tavern, demolished in 1997. A plaque by the entrance tells the history of the Gap Tavern, and celebrities who wined and dined there like Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev. But an interesting story is about the German Shepherd, Rexie, who was well known for her suicide preventions. In her lifetime, she received many trophies and medals for her acts of humanity.

Watsons Bay village, is a pretty village. And there is a collection of shops, cafes, and retail. A building that stands out is the majestic cream building with 4 pillars supporting a balcony. This was once the Vaucluse Town Hall, 1910, designed by Varney Parkes. The upper level hall saw use as a picture theatre - Rivoli, Rex, Village and Watsons Bay Theatre. The Council moved into Dunbar House in 1924. It then became an antique shop. Today the building has been converted to apartments.

9

You can either end the walk at the village or continue up Old South Head Rd, which is quite steep. You will pass Our Lady Star Of The Sea Church, designed by architect Charles St Julien in Federation Romanesque (American) style. The Church was opened on June 10,1910.

Continuing up the hill on the corner of Bell St and Old South Head Rd is a Boundary Marker. It is 1.5 metre high block of shaped sandstone, in front of a red brick wall. The boundary marker is similar to those used to mark the extent of the Wentworth (Vaucluse) estate. This stone was probably used to mark a local estate boundary. My next walk (Ed 30) I will start at Watsons Bay, via Camp Cove and follow the South Head Heritage Trail.

What does innovation look like in the Uniting Church? “Our messaging is bold and brave and at times outrageous”, says Vanessa. “I try to think like a seeker. I think, if I was a nonChristian what would I want to hear? And I try to operate like somebody who might not be into God at all.”

This posture perhaps arises from experience, as Vanessa was once outside the community of faith but was surprised by the call to ministry after what she calls a purely experiential encounter with the Holy Spirit.

For Rev Vanessa Williams-Henke and Uniting Heart and Soul in Sydney’s Double Bay and Woollahra, there are two key ingredients: an openness to take risks, and embracing a “radically honest” approach to ministry. Rev Vanessa Williams-Henke took up placement as the minister in mid-January. In a short amount of time she has inspired a heart for mission which has led to exponential growth of the community over its two worshipping sites. Since January 15, the congregation has grown from a small but engaged group of around 14 people to over 50 each week. Vanessa says there has been nothing revolutionary about her approach. She asked the existing church community to trust her, she says, and simply opened the

doors. The church began to use the worship space as a worship space again, knowing that – with capacity to seat 150 people – growth could take place there. Vanessa credits the community for its willingness to take risks and their positive response to what she described as a “radically honest ministry” that speaks plainly and openly about the reality of life. “I keep it simple and I talk about things of the heart. I make the stories relate for right here and now,” says Vanessa. At the same time, the congregation has re-oriented to an outward-facing approach by intentionally reaching out towards the wider community. Through provocative signage and word of mouth, Facebook boosting, and a professional communications strategy, the visibility of the church in the community is growing.

New and exciting opportunities are arising from a simple process – to recognise and take account of the extent of resources held by the church and available for mission, and then to consider how best to use them for the betterment of the wider community. In doing this, there is a strong commitment to harness partnerships and draw on the insights of existing models – joining with ‘the places of life’ that already exist.

the vote on Church Union was taken in 1973, the Woollahra and Double Bay congregations voted in its favour and in 1976, the Presbyterian Church joined with the Methodist and Congregational Churches in the Uniting Church in Australia.

In response to discerning the needs of the community, the church is also exploring the possibility of partnering with a psychologist and establishing counselling rooms to serve the area of Woollahra-Double Bay, which has one of the highest incidents of domestic violence in Sydney. It is hoped that the service will be fee-help based or very low fee, removing cost as a barrier to assistance for people in various situations of violence. Vanessa agrees that the exciting ministry emerging at Woollahra – Double Bay is innovative because it is about always “trying to think outside of the box”, but the ultimate purpose is the same: “let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, and that’s my default position.”

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS

several crosses used to mark mass graves in France were brought to Australia. William Cameron, a member of the congregation and a serving officer with the 1st Battalion, located the Pozieres cross while serving at Victoria Barracks – which has been at the church since 1935. Since then, members of the 1st Battalion and their successors have gathered in the Church annually to remember their comrades.

THE IONA STONE

The church is the only place in NSW that holds a commemorative service. Next to the cross are unique flags on display – including a Union Jack presented to the Battalion by King George V at a special parade in 1918 and an original ANZAC flag.

The church showcases many interesting features. The walls feature magnificent windows – including beautifully coloured ones depicting The Ascension and another depicting “The Good Shepherd”, created by John Radecki, the first Australian-trained stained glass window artist; this is believed to be the first such window to incorporate Australian wildflowers.

On March 8. 1890, the first section of St Columba was opened with the second portion completed in 1894.

The foundation stone of the church was laid on June 1, 1889 by Sir John Hay, who had been appointed president of the NSW Legislative Council in 1873 and after whom a Riverina town is named.

Vanessa has brought a passionate, evangelistic and entrepreneurial style to her ministry. Discerning the work of the Spirit and responding to the Spirit’s prompting continues to be foundational and is inspiring the mission of the church.

There are plans for the location of the church in the Bay to become the site for a collaboration with the Wayside Chapel to establish a luxe Op shop and gallery for local artists. Under this arrangement, Uniting Heart and Soul (Woollahra-Double Bay) will provide the real estate for the mission and Wayside Chapel will use the shop as a training space for young people.

ST COLUMBA CHURCH: Woollahra's hidden gem

The first meeting to form what was then the new Parish of Woollahra was held in December 1887 at the Oddfellows Hall in Queen Street with the first service at that hall on February 12, 1888. By July 1888, the renowned Reverend John Walker – hailed as a ‘pioneer minister’ in the building of congregations – was inducted as the Parish’s first Minister.

The church’s history is peppered with renowned Australians. The original building was designed by Australian architect Sir John Sulman, who later became chairman of the Federal Capital Advisory Committee, influencing the development of Canberra. Sulman was also appointed trustee then president of the Art Gallery of NSW; the Sir John Sulman Prize has been held there since 1936, hosted concurrently with the Archibald Prize, which in 1931 was awarded to John Longstaff for a portrait of Sulman.

She entered ministry reluctantly but with a commitment to remain herself: “If God was going to call me,” she says, “I was just going to extravagantly be me. I come from a position of vulnerability and I think people respond to that because it’s real.”

One of the key aspects of the mission strategy for Woollahra-Double Bay is considering options for how best to use or potentially redevelop commercial real estate owned by the church.

Ist Battalion Colours, Pozieres Service Another famous person associated with the congregation was Herbert Beecroft. Remembered mainly for his 1927 painting 'And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter', by 1990, over 60 million prints had reportedly been made – believed to be one of the most copied Christian works in the world. Over time, with the building, the religious affiliation of the church also evolved. Though the people who first established the church were of Presbyterian affiliation, when

Above the glass entry doors, appropriately perched on high, is a piece of sandstone set amongst the brickwork. This stone was given to St Columba by the Iona Community in Scotland and is a reminder of the Church’s derivation. Columba was an Irish priest who journeyed to Scotland in 563 AD with 12 other monks, establishing on the small island of Iona. He is viewed as key to bringing Christianity to Scotland. Columba's fame has brought pilgrims to Iona since the 7th century.

POZIERES CROSS AND FLAGS

The 1st Battalion was the first group to enlist at the outbreak of WWI. After the war,

Nowadays, as well as functioning as a time-honoured church, the three-storey building is also a community centre – home to the Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra – with all concerts taking place in the hall as the acoustics are so good, and which houses the pipe organ with its magnificent Sulman-designed casing, and also offers activities including a ballet school as well as play groups, Latin dance and Pilates. CHARING CROSS UPGRADE PLANS

Waverley Council has unveiled plans to transform the sleepy shopping strip of Charing Cross into a vibrant community hub. It has come up with a streetscape and traffic plan which is on public exhibition till May 19. The ambitious vision is for a treelined boulevard with widened footpaths and without the clutter of overhead cables which exists presently.

“Our landscape architects will also select tree species designed to frame the shop fronts without blocking views, and this planting is part of our commitment to have 30% tree canopy and shrub cover in Waverley,” the Mayor said. “We want to bring back the charm of the Charing Cross of yesteryear but with a focus on sustainability and safety.”

Like a lot of shopping strips which have to compete with the likes of Westfield, the shops at Charing Cross include a number of niche businesses which do not have direct competition in the Junction. For instance, Nichola Dare runs an indigenous art gallery on Bronte Road called Aboriginal Contemporary. Nichola has mixed feelings about the Charing Cross makeover plans. “I’m excited that they are revitalizing and upgrading it, but I fear my business will be cut off for months while the work is carried out.” She welcomed the planned lowering of the speed limit, saying “There are five schools within 500 metres of Charing Cross.”

There will also be a lowering of the speed limit to 40km/h, meaning motorists and buses will have to comply with the 40km/h limit all the way from Bondi Public School to St Catherines. The lower speed limit is being introduced at a number of locations around Bondi Junction by Waverley Council. Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said Council’s concept design for the upgrade will help green and beautify the terracedline shopping strip, improve pedestrian safety and celebrate the heritage features of the area.

restaurants like Bronte Road Bistro and Café Sorelle, a large Vinnies and an eclectic selection of other shops.

Artist’s impression of a tree-lined Charing Cross Charing Cross was originally known by locals as Madden’s Corner after a resident called John Madden who had a cottage there. It was renamed Charing Cross in 1859 by Council at a time when suburb boundaries were being defined. Believe it or not, Charing Cross was the commercial centre of Waverley before Bondi Junction began its early growth spurts. Yes kiddies, once upon a time, the Bondi Junction shopping centre consisted of just a small cluster of shops plus the Tea Hardens Hotel, established in 1854.

Charing Cross got the first of its three watering holes in 1857 with the opening of the Charing Cross Hotel by London-born William Newland, who had been transported to Australia for selling stolen goods. The hotel was rebuilt in 1935, making it an important heritage building. The Robin Hood Hotel, located just across Carrington Rd, has a history going back to 1859 and the current building was constructed by Tooth & Co in 1938. In addition, there is the Eastern Suburbs Legion Club on Bronte Rd. Plus there are cafés and

However, she had reservations about removing the overhead power lines. The reason for this was because the Council had been in touch with Charing Cross businesses late last year and outlined what would replace the power lines. “The Council proposed putting in these large boxes on the footpath which we didn’t see as aesthetically pleasing,” she said. “They could collect dirt and rubbish and even be used as urinals.” To have your say on the Charing Cross upgrade plans, visit https://haveyoursay. waverley.nsw.gov.au/Charingcross Tony Maguire

Vu iz dos gesele

(Where is the little street)?

Acclaimed Australian artist Wendy Sharpe will take over the walls of Sydney Jewish Museum’s gallery space, using a large-scale painted mural to tell her family’s stories from their Ukrainian hometown of Kamianets-Podilskyi.

“My ancestors’ escape from their homeland is just one of many thousands of similar stories of chance survival or planned migration. No words can describe their bravery in the face of intense antisemitism.” The artist will paint directly onto the Museum’s walls, depicting a colourful installation of streetscapes and snippets of her own nostalgic memories from her recent trip to Ukraine. For just eight weeks, visitors to the exhibition will be able to trace the memories of Wendy and her ancestors, until the mural is painted over and returned to memory. The title of the exhibition, Vu iz dos gesele (Where is the little street)?, is a song that the artist’s grandmother used to sing in Yiddish and Russian. Though Wendy never met her grandmother, this song links to her and also has resonance with Jews and displaced people more widely. Wendy Sharpe is the only child of British parents who immigrated to Australia in the 1950s, settling in Sydney. Her mother, Marjorie, born in Yorkshire, wasn't Jewish, but her father, writer and historian Alan Sharpe

was of Russian Jewish heritage. His parents were Ben and Bessie Cohen (née Fishman). Ben died at a young age leaving Bessie a widow with two young sons. Bessie eventually married Dave Shapavitch (Sharpe). In the early 1900s, Bessie Fishman's relatives escaped pogroms, fleeing Kamianets-Podilskyi, then part of Russia, now Ukraine, settling in London as refugees. Kamianets-Podilskyi has a dark history, extending beyond the early 20th century pogroms. The town was the site of the August 1941 massacre where the Nazis murdered almost 30,000 Jews (12,000 local Jews and 18,000 Jews from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania).

Wendy Sharpe. Photograph by Charmaine Lyons

In 2019, the artist visited Kamianets-Podilskyi with her cousin Ruth Fishman to learn more about their family history. During the trip Wendy made extensive sketches, drawings and paintings in notebooks, which will be transformed onto the walls of the Museum’s gallery.

Bobby’s Corner Café ticks all the boxes Bobby’s Corner is a friendly neighbourhood café tucked away in a tranquil location on the corner of Hastings Parade and Wairoa Avenue - just a five-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Bondi Beach. The café serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and is a community hub for families, pooches, locals catching up, and with free WIFI, provides an ideal spot for those working remotely. The café exudes atmosphere and warmth immediately you walk in the door and are welcomed by the friendly staff – or by Bobby, the owner. What’s lovely is you have the choice of sitting inside, undercover outside, or in a light and airy conservatory. The soul of the café is owner Bobby, who says you have to "work from your heart and love what you do". Originally from Thailand, he clearly loves his work. Whether its engaging with customers, making the strong, chocolatey Italian-style coffee of which he’s so proud – or creating dishes for the café’s menu - inspired by chefs he’s worked with during his years in hospitality. His mantra is: "use quality ingredients and keep it simple" – and create a menu that everyone will enjoy, whether vegetarian, vegan, or dairy or gluten-intolerant. The menu’s so yummy you’ll find it hard to decide what to eat – but if you’re after breakfast, a long-standing customer favourite is ‘Bondi Benny’ - potato rosti, poached eggs, spinach hollandaise sauce, and choices including bacon, broccolini, and smoked salmon. Or, as we head into winter, Bobby’s breakfast choice is the

café’s signature ‘warm coconut porridge’, made of rolled oats, coconut milk, organic mixed quinoa, caramelised bananas, berries, honey and crunchy pistachio. For lunch he recommends the ‘coconut curry rice’, with broccolini, roasted cauliflower, chili, micro herbs and a choice of grilled chicken or grilled tofu.

To brighten those looming dark wintry evenings, Bobby’s planning on hosting ‘Thai Nights’. It won’t be your usual Thai fare – the emphasis will be on ‘traditional’ – and yes, some dishes will be authentically hot – but he said there will be something to suit everyone’s palette. His criteria - to make sure the food is "as good as Mum’s"! If you want to take a ‘taste of Bobby’s’ home with you, you’re in luck, the café sells many of the ingredients used in his recipes. So, you can sate your appetite and shop at the same time! Bobby, unsurprisingly, is not one to stand still – and has opened a Bobby’s Corner Café in Surry Hills. The new café serves his delicious coffee, juices, and food such as ‘housebaked granola and yogurt’, ‘Corner ‘Avo Smash’, and a selection of sandwiches. Whether you visit the Bondi or Surry Hills café, you’ll get a warm welcome, good food – and of course, that great brew of coffee. Pauline Wall

RANDWICK BY NIGHT Randwick Council has come up with a bold plan to create a night time economy by extending business trading hours and allowing musical performances and other cultural events at unlicensed premises.

A report tabled at a meeting of the Randwick Local Planning Panel proposes that current regulations be relaxed to support "a diverse, safe and inclusive night time economy." The move could help activate areas like Kingsford, where the shopping strip has seen a slump since being sliced down the middle by the Light Rail. It could also help The Spot at Randwick (pictured) tap into its full potential as an entertainment hub. Randwick Mayor Danny Said stated: “We have vibrant town centres that, with the right approach, can create a night-time economy and bring substantial socioeconomic benefits to the areas.” The Mayor said promotion of a night time economy would stimulate jobs and promote a sense of community, which he said was “important to so many who may have felt disconnected and lonely throughout most of 2020.”

He added: “Of course, these initiatives will also ensure that issues such as waste management, noise and residential amenity are appropriately managed and addressed.”

EXTENDING TRADING HOURS TO 11PM

The plan is to let a range of businesses which have traditionally shut their doors at 6pm extend their hours to 11pm. It would not apply to licenced premises which already have extended hours. The businesses and trading precincts would be encouraged to make use of live music and other cultural activities. “Randwick City presently has a limited night time economy that is centred upon dining and drinking, with the perception that there is nothing else to do after work, says the report tabled at the Planning Panel meeting. The report said stimulating the local night time economy would not only have economic and cultural benefits but “improve perceptions of safety through increased street activity.” It is proposed that the night time economy be fostered through amendments to the Randwick Local Environmental Plan 2012. These will give clarity on the type of low-impact businesses which could extend

their hours and add value and excitement through cultural activities. There would be an incentive for the establishment of new galleries and other cultural venues.

MORE PIZZAZ

Chairperson of the Randwick and The Spot Chamber of Commerce, Janet Alexander, welcomed the Council move to promote a night time economy. “I’ve wanted this for a long time,” she said. Ms Alexander said Randwick needed “pizzaz” to make a night time economy viable. More council street seating would

be a step in the right direction. She was ambivalent about street musical performances. “In a location like The Spot, the musicians would have to be vetted to make sure they are not going to be too much of a distraction,” she said. “But I think performances by schoolchildren – school choirs, hospital fundraisers and the like – would help foster a sense of community and vibrancy.” Tony Maguire

Making child’s play a priority Robyn Monro Miller reflects on children’s play and how the experience of play is of biological importance in protecting and maintaining the health of our children.

What are you doing to support your child’s health? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. More recently, positive mental health was defined by WHO as being ‘a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.’ Did you know all these elements are achieved during play? Play is free, play is simple and play has capacity to resource itself though a child’s own imagination, exploration and innovation. But this seemingly ready access to play can often mean, as adults, we overlook the importance of it. Quite simply, play is critical for healthy human development. Within the animal kingdom play is undertaken by all species with complex social structures. We only have to watch our own pets engage in play or be entertained by the endless online videos of wild animals at play, to be given proof that play is not just a pastime of humans. The fact that play is undertaken by so many species is evidence

that play is not an optional human concept created as an indulgence for our young but a biological imperative for survival of a species.

The process of play has a deep evolutionary role in the developing brain and provides multifunctional benefits for brain and motor skill development. Studies show that during play, the neocortex of the brain is activated with almost one third of genes changed after 30 mins of play. Play builds new circuits in the prefrontal cortex of the brain where all our executive functions are controlled. This relates to the regulation of emotions, problem solving and the navigation of complex social interactions. Play supports development of adaptability as it is the spontaneity of play that supports the brain to train for the unexpected. This is coupled with the release of hormones that reduce stress and links to play increasing a child’s resilience. In short, play grows brains, literally switching them on and powering them up! Most importantly free, unstructured play ensures children thrive rather than just exist. It brings a child joy and sometimes pain as they navigate the feelings emotions and challenges. It ensures for every child full engagement with life. Play sits within the animal kingdom alongside nutrition and caregiving and should be given the same priority for humans. So if there is one thing you can do for your child, it is to give them the time and space to play, as adults that is all we need to do,

your child’s instinctive biological urge to play will do the rest. Investment in play should be a national priority for health and wellbeing and building strong connected communities. There are a number of things in a child’s life that are optional, Play is not one of them. Robyn Monro Miller has worked in education and children’s services for over 30

years in the local area. She is currently a Board member of Play Australia (www.playaustralia.org.au) and President of the International Play Association (www.ipaworld.org). Looking to head outside to play? Use the free guide www.playgroundfinder.com

New cycleway pops up in Randwick

A new “pop-up” cycleway, delivered by Transport NSW and Randwick City Council, has opened along High St, Randwick, providing a safe, reliable transport option for those choosing active transport around Randwick City. The new route, which runs from Anzac Pde to Wansey Rd, connects key areas such as the Randwick town centre and light rail terminus with the Kingsford and Kensington town centres as well as UNSW and NIDA, via existing shared paths along Wansey Rd and Anzac Pde.

Launched following the popularity of the recently-installed Cooper Park Nature Wellness Trail, like its Bellevue Hill counterpart the Trail features a number of ‘Rejuvenation Stations’ which guide you through a series of meditative activities that will help you slow down, connect with nature, reflect and relax. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/wellnesstrail for more info.

“Our research has shown that separated cycleways, like this pop-up, help those who are just starting out, such as kids or people new to cycling, feel safer and more confident sharing the road with cars.”

Surf club plans move forward

They came up with ideas on a number of issues raised after plans were put on public display. These included positioning of exit ramps, kitchen and amenities layout, kiosk location and security issues. One concern was that the new courtyard area could become a sleepover venue. Councillors agreed overnight dossers could be deterred through lighting and video surveillance, with further measures to be discussed at the detailed design stage.

MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! Environmental preservation and sustainable action are of the utmost importance to me. As extreme weather events have increased drastically over the past decades as a result of climate change, it is all the more critical that we take action to preserve our natural environment, including our parks and green spaces. In the eastern suburbs, Centennial Park, Moore Park and Queens Park are at the heart of the communities that surround them. These parklands are a versatile and necessary public good; whether for socialising, exercising, or relaxing. The very existence of these vast parklands in our dense urban city is testament to not just the current legislative framework that protects them, but also the preservation of these lands for millennia by their traditional custodians, the Gadigal people. Therefore it is the responsibility of us all to strive to continue to preserve these parks for future generations to enjoy as we do now.

Council to trial shark drumlines

Randwick Council will work with the Department of Primary Industries to trial shark drumlines and shark listening stations along the Randwick City coastline. The move follows a five-year survey by the NSW Government which found ‘smart’ drumlines were more effective than nets in catching targeted shark species, with a 99% survival rate. The drumlines are typically located beyond the surf break and are checked morning and night with caught sharks tagged and relocated 1km offshore.

The Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award is administered and presented annually by Waverley Council with the generous support of Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran and the ongoing commitment and assistance of community partners Gertrude and Alice Bookshop and Café, Bondi Beach.

Waverley councillors held a special workshop to discuss refinements in the ambitious renovation plans for Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club.

The new system is located on the roof of Woollahra Library and will supply over 80,000 kW hours of renewable electricity to Kiaora Place every year, saving over 73,000kg of CO2 – the equivalent of powering 15 houses or taking 16 cars off the road for 12 months.

“This new temporary cycleway had already been identified by Council as a priority route,” says Randwick Mayor Danny Said. “It will provide a COVID-safe way for people to move around our area and access shopping precincts, work or study without needing to rely on public transport or driving.

Marjorie O'Neill MP

Centennial Parklands is presently governed by an independent trust. However, the NSW Minister for Planning has announced the dissolution of this trust in order to hand over the parks to the Greater Sydney Parklands agency, a decision which jeopardises the future of these parklands. If you would like to raise your concerns with this decision, please sign our petition by going to: https://marjorieoneill.com.au/campaigns/save-our-parks/

COMMUNITY SURVEY

Shark listening stations are buoys which provide a real-time alert when a tagged shark swims within 500 metres. Randwick Council currently has shark nets along its beaches. These will remain in place while the shark drumlines trial is undertaken.

There are so many things that are important to our diverse community. From health and education services, to our public transport network, to overdevelopment, as well as climate change and environmental protection, so I want to hear from you!

Gym construction starts soon

The old, blue-painted gym opposite Southpoint will soon be demolished to make way for the construction of a new $25.7 million gymnastics centre. Construction of the new centre is expected to take a year. The project is being funded with $18.7 million in state and federal government grants, $4 million from the South Sydney Rabbitohs and $3 million from Randwick City Council.
