Bayside NEWS EASTERN SUBURBS

POST PANDEMIC FINANCIAL RECOVERY AND INVESTMENT INTO LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE P4

But thoughts without deeds are not all that useful, so we’ve done our best to bring you stories of things people are doing to help each other and also introduce a couple of ways we may be able to help people share community news and work together. First on the list is a new service that helps lonely “locked-downs” send succour and support to each other, bring a smile to their face, raise their spirits and know “we’re not all alone in this together”. It’s the brainchild of two “besties”, Chloe & Amber, who’ve found a way to “spread kindness, not covid” and raise the spirits of their friends by sending surprise hand delivered “Iso miss you” gifts without breaking the bank. Prices are between $22 and $30, and you can find full details on page 8. On the same page you’ll find a similar story about Nadene Alhadeff, Executive Director of Mum for Mum an organisation that matches pregnant women in their last trimester, and mums with new babies, with a trained volunteer who will provide ongoing emotional support in the first year of the baby’s life. In the last year alone 160 volunteers supported 250 mums across Sydney. And talking of feeling cheerful and uplifted, how good would it be to hear that optimism is a skill that can be learned? In her article on page 18, Robyn Monro Miller, President of the International Play Association, explains how children can learn to be optimistic from a very early age, and that being so helps them feel in control of their lives. In truth, it appears that optimism can be learned at

any age, so you might want to try out the optimism tests shown on page 18 to see how much “Vitamin O” (Optimism) you have. For our part we have chipped in with a couple of ideas that can help the community share information and work together. The first is on page 3 and allows anyone who wishes to sign up, login and post local area news directly into the community(s) of their choice. Locals can use it to publish local area News and Articles, Art Galleries can use it promote Events, Businesses can use it to publish Special Offers, Professionals can use it to publish articles sharing their expertise, Clubs and Schools can use it to publish Sporting Fixtures and Bloggers can use it to gain exposure for their blogs. Finally, to help businesses, community bodies and social groups during the Covid lockdown, we have created the Eastern Suburbs Network Group. This allows members to keep in touch with established contacts, as well as build new relationships, without leaving their desk. People joining before Aug 31 receive a free 6 Months Covid Lockdown Advertising Bundle valued at over $500. (See page 19) We hope our stories have been able to lift your spirits and, as usual, extend a big thank you to our readers, advertisers, and all the people who make this paper possible. We wish you a safe August and look forward to seeing you again in September.

Post pandemic financial recovery and investment in local infrastructure

With a total expenditure of $126.8 million, the recently endorsed 2021/22 Delivery Program and Operational Plan outlines a range of initiatives which will ensure the long-term financial sustainability and benefit the Woollahra Council community.

• $125k to expand the solar system at Kiaora Place, Double Bay.

Some of the capital works project highlights include:

The COVID-19 pandemic had significant economic impacts on our budget and we are focused on addressing our financial recovery from reduced revenue and the $7.9m commitment we made to support local businesses and the community to help ease the economic burden of COVID-19.

• $4.4m for the construction of a new pedestrian plaza at Knox St, Double Bay, funded by a grant from the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program. • $300k for the Plumer Rd, Rose Bay business centre streetscape upgrade. • $200k for the upgrade of Dillon St Reserve including landscaping and play equipment. • $192k for pathway renewal at Trumper Park • $480k for the upgrade of Cooper Park Community Hall, funded by the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP).

In addition to these projects, our $106.8m Operational Expenditure budget will fund a number of ongoing services and programs for the community including park maintenance, waste services, libraries and community events.

ACTIVE AGING

Active aging is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years.

Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow them to stay in their home environment. “Without hesitation, I highly recommend Home Sweet Home for in-home care

services and will use this excellent company for all my mother’s home care. As experienced nurses, Karen and Marella (the business owners) immediately understand the needs of the client and are able to effectively match the right care-giver to the situation. Furthermore, even when I had not engaged a care-giver, Karen and Marella generously provided their nursing advice and care recommendations to support my mother. What sets them apart from their competitors is their empathetic and knowledgeable care for their clients”.

EASTERN SUBURBS

EASTERN SUBURBS

Ed 32, August, 2021

DAVE SHARMA FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH This latest lockdown in Sydney, prompted by the so-called delta variant of COVID-19, has been tough for many. Businesses are under pressure. Home schooling can be stressful. Many of us are feeling isolated, especially the elderly. Special occasions and celebrations have had to be postponed or cancelled, whilst regular activities have been put on hold.

Tough as it may seem now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. To reach this light, we need to continue and accelerate our vaccination program. In the last month, the percentage of our population which is fully vaccinated (two doses) has tripled. Fully 82% of our aged care population has now received both doses. We are currently delivering over one million doses per week, and this deployment will accelerate further with more GPs and pharmacists being brought on line to deliver vaccines. At the time this was going to print, over 11 million Australians — or over half of the eligible population — has received at least one dose of the vaccine.

FUNDING TO INDEPENDENT CINEMAS Our independent cinemas contribute much to the cultural and artistic vitality of the eastern suburbs, but they have suffered greatly during the pandemic, with forced closures, social distancing and other restrictions leading to significant declines in ticket sales and revenue.

I was therefore pleased to have been able to help three independent cinemas in the area secure a total of $180,000 in federal government grants to help them through these tough times. The Ritz Cinema in Randwick, as well as the Chauvel and Verona Cinemas in Paddington, will each benefit.

I am looking forward to the returning to these cinemas and watching a movie soon, and please do your part to help these businesses return once restrictions are lifted.

OVARIAN CANCER

We have some of the best medical and scientific researches in the world right here in our own community. Prior to the lockdown, I visited the Gynaecological Cancer Research Group at the University of NSW to meet the research team and learn about the exciting research they have underway into ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer, with a low survival rate, and currently an early detection test does not exist — which means diagnosis often occurs too late for effective treatment. Last year, on World Ovarian Cancer Day the Federal Government invested $16.2 million for eight medical research projects into ovarian cancer. I was able to see some of this funding in action. Led by Professor Associate Caroline Ford with Doctor Kristina Warton, the research group has made phenomenal strides in cancer research, having identified a set of DNA regions that are uniquely altered in patients suffering from ovarian cancer. As the researchers collect more data they hope to be able to harness their discovery and design highly-sensitive laboratory tests to detect this early DNA marker in the blood. If this proves possible, it will facilitate the early detection of ovarian cancer, saving the lives of many Australians. A special shoutout goes to local fashion sister-and-brother Camilla and Marc, of Camilla and Marc fame, for raising awareness around this issue and contributing to research funding.

A lifesaver for new mothers Struggling with a new baby? It’s hard to be a confident mum at the best of times. Even with loving relatives nearby, a comfortable home and good health, there are the sleepless nights, baby’s heartrending, unstoppable cries, and that constant self-doubt: am I doing it right? Am I a good mother? How much harder it is when you’re isolated. Family far away, a new culture, conflict with your partner because you’re both under pressure.

“I was in a very dark place. I feel like my Mum for Mum volunteer has been a lifesaver”

(Mum supported through the program) That’s where Mum for Mum, founded 12 years ago by the National Council of Jewish Women (NSW), comes in. This nondenominational program matches pregnant women in their last trimester and mums with new babies with a trained volunteer who will provide ongoing emotional support in the first year of the baby’s life. In the last year alone, Mum for Mum’s 160 volunteers supported 250 mums across Sydney. All volunteers are mums themselves. They undergo extensive training — in mental health, domestic violence awareness, child development and the psychology of parenting. Regular debriefing and supervision sessions enable them to offer the best support possible to the mothers

they are accompanying through difficult times.

A TIME LIKE NO OTHER

“Having a new baby is challenging in the best conditions. And how much more challenging during this pandemic, which is taking a massive toll on mental and physical health,” says Nadene Alhadeff, Mum for Mum’s Executive Director. “It’s a time like no other. If new mums are struggling, it impacts their babies’ healthy development. “There are increased health concerns for baby and family, separation from family members, and relationship issues arising from working and parenting in confined spaces, not to mention financial and job security concerns.”

“I was isolated and in lockdown with a baby with reflux and nothing going right. Knowing (my volunteer) would lift me up when things were difficult got me through” (Mum of 9-month-old boy) “Our dream for Mum for Mum,” Alhadeff says, ‘is that wherever there is a mother who can benefit from the program, we will have a trained volunteer ready to support her, helping her find her unique voice and be the best mother she can be. You can help — please consider donating to or sponsoring Mum for Mum.”

SPREADING KINDNESS Spreading kindness not Covid is how two young Sydney uni students built a business in one week to spread a bit of lockdown love.

A Covid lockdown ode The streets are quiet and ghostly now, getting through these restrictions somehow. Do we start to appreciate more? How it used to be before? Having contact with our friends and even strangers too, needing that through and through. Yes, even missing the small gesture and chat with the person on the street, appreciating those times now, seem more sweet. It highlights how important community life is, the normalcy this is. Less frequent are trips to our shops and deli, being at home probably watching more telly? I’m a book person more at heart, but even with a book, in the long run, we need the community and be a part. On Queen Street, I do miss the local chats at Pasta Pantry with "Frier and Kin", now

it’s just a nod, you’re sooner out than staying in. I’m also missing the greeting hugs and chats with the Manager V, she works at Charcoal Charlie. Are we all missing the sounds of the hustle and bustle, like sitting in the cafes, chilling out in the sun, perhaps being part of the community is being more fun. Staying indoors more and more, do we now appreciate our community before? Friends and strangers, let’s give each other a smile. Oh wait, with the mask in place, seeing that, is going to be a while. Perhaps let your sunshine smile through your eyes, even though we are half disguised. The people that have this paper in hand, shows we clearly need our community band. Bonita Chau Local Woollahra Resident

One Sunday night two besties, Amber Linz and Chloe Shaw were brainstorming over Facetime about how to help their friends riddled with boredom, loneliness and Covid cabin-fever. They wanted to send more than a “virtual hug”, an actual gift that said ‘thinking of you’ without breaking the bank. LockdownLoveSydney.com was born. LockdownLove Sydney are beautifully wrapped gifts with a cheeky card, delivered within 24 hours. The cards say things like “I’m so Gladys we’re friends” or “Iso miss you so much” and allow the purchaser to customise the other side. “It’s more about the giggle from the card and the excitement of receiving a gorgeous gift at the door that we wanted”. Each gift is packed with either something fun to do, deliciously naughty to eat, or pampering to make you “feel the lerve” and they range from $22-$30. It’s a perfect way during lockdown to give a ‘hang in there’ or ‘cheer up’ gesture at a truly affordable price. https://lockdownlovesydney.com/pages/ https://www.instagram.com/lockdownlovesydney/

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA

We continue the fascinating look at Sir Thomas Mitchell, a parishioner of St Mark’s Church Darling Point who first surveyed much of Eastern Australia and helped lay the foundations of a system of land tenure that enabled the development of prosperous lands to feed and keep clothed countless millions of people. SIR THOMAS MITCHELL – PART 2

“The Major” as he was known, conducted four substantial survey expeditions into the interior of Australia between 1831 and 1847 and covered much of Eastern Australia. Initially, his journeys were partly to investigate the possibility of a large inland sea that the known inland river systems seemed to indicate might exist. The explorations covered to the west as far as the Darling River, northward almost to the Gulf of Carpentaria and through Victoria from the Murray River to Portland and back through Western and Central Victoria (which Mitchell famously named Australia Felix). They are described in great detail in Mitchell’s own published journals and also in expert review by JHL Cumpston, his most important biographer. All works are accessible online at the Gutenberg Project Australia. Our interest for the next two months is in the fascinating interactions between Mitchell and the indigenous and convict people with whom he came in contact during his expeditions. We must remember

that the Major was an army officer in the civil service, and he was under very strict instructions concerning his treatment of both groups. Interestingly, his expeditions were mostly made up of convicts and included many First Nation guides and camp followers.

What we learn from the journals of his expeditions is that, over time, Mitchell developed a profound respect for the indigenous population. This is in contrast to his first encounters where he appears to be somewhat self-righteous and shows an infallible belief in the superiority of his form of civilization. In his quest to open up new productive lands, at first, he sees the First Nations people as “savages” with barbaric customs and behaviours which he finds abhorrent. He was even puzzled by the “hostility and “treachery” of some of the First Nations people that he encountered. Through his observations of the life of the widow, Turandurey, who accompanies his party through the Australia Felix expeditions, he recounts the harsh and slavish existence of indigenous women, some of whom could be traded for “the price of a tomahawk”.

It is only in the last expedition that we see Mitchell reflect on the displacement of a noble race. It is in his reflections during this time that he foresees the toll that European intrusion has caused. In his Final Report of 1848, he ruefully states “Surely it behoves the nation so active in the suppression of slavery to consider betimes, in taking up new countries, how the Aboriginal races can be preserved; and how the evil effects of spirituous liquors, of gunpowder, and of diseases more inimical to them than even slavery, may be counteracted.” For those of us struggling with the need for reconciliation it is important to note that peaceful coexistence was the Governments’ order of the day. Mitchell followed those specific instructions to respect the local inhabitants and not to use his massive technological advantage to harm them.

Next month, we shall continue his story with a closer look at Mitchell’s interactions with the convicts in his charge. Image (left): Turandurey and Ballandella.

In this Ed 32 August, I walk down Ocean St, Woollahra pointing out historical landmarks, churches, traffic signal art and consulates.

Back on Trewlaney St is Wolper Jewish Hospital, opened in 1961. The first move to establish a Jewish hospital in Sydney was made in 1947 by Professor A. Lippmann, a doctor who arrived in Sydney from Europe in 1938. Wolper Jewish Hospital is now a specialist medical and rehabilitation hospital. For more about the history go to: https://wolper.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wolp_first50years_lr.pdf

Back onto Ocean St, I pass a painted traffic signal (cnr Trelawney St). There are many of these dotted around the Woollahra Council areas, which is a community project initiative.

4

The house Chiswick had been demolished soon after Mrs Holme’s acquisition of the property, and the former stables occupied by the First Edgecliff Troop of Boy Scouts and Cubs as a Scout Hall. It was decided that the stables would be retained and transformed into a kiosk and caretaker’s quarters. In 1971 it became home to Pruniers, and now, Chiswick which is a restaurant/function centre

In 1879 Woollahra Public School opened with three rooms and 300 children. By 1891 extensions were completed and the enrolment was 1200. Since the 1930s Woollahra has been one of the few Sydney schools to have 'OC' (opportunity) classes. I head down Nelson St, crossing Queen St at cnr of Nelson and Wallis St is a house called Brougham. Built in the early 1860's, added to in 1870 and again in the 1900's, the house was occupied by Judge James S. Dowling of the District Court, up to the early 1900's and by Frederick H. King, a Solicitor, up to the early 1930's. It was purchased by the NSW State Government, and used until 1992 under the control of the Department of Youth as a Reception Centre.

8 Heading down Ocean St I pass Chiswick Gardens, which was a mid-nineteenth century private house, the land became a public recreation area following Council’s acquisition of the site in 1938. Moves to acquire the property began in late 1937, with Alderman J. D. Gaden’s proposal that negotiations be at once opened for the acquisition of land at the corner of Ocean and Wellington Street. The site was owned by Mrs Lilian Florence Holme, who was willing to sell the land for use as a park or for other public purpose.

My walk begins at All Saints' Church. The architect was Edmund Blacket and construction took place between 1876 and 1882. The Church was mainly paid for by Henry Mort, the brother of Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, as a thanksgiving for the rescue of his wife and child from shipwreck in 1865; as a memorial to his wife, Maria, who died in 1873; and as a church for his clergyman son. The first stage of All Saints' Church was opened on January 8, 1876, free of debt at a cost of about £5,300. Tenders were called for the completion of the building in 1880 which was finished late in 1882.

There are many different forms of hearing loss and by far the most common form is age related hearing loss (otherwise known as Presbycusis). The prevalence of hearing loss among Australians is largely driven by our aging population. Age related hearing loss is a natural part of the aging process. The passing of time is something that impacts on people differently but as we get older it is common for the inner ear to lose some of its ability to convert the vibration of sound into an electrical impulse for the hearing nerve. Typically, this affects the high pitch sounds first, which reduces the clarity of speech.

Research indicates that around 60% of Australians aged between 60 and 70 have hearing loss. 74% of Australian aged 71 years and older have a hearing loss. It is no wonder, then, that hearing loss generates a huge source of frustration in the community. The frustration affects both those who have hearing loss, plus friends and family who witness the reduction in quality of life associated with hearing loss. The good news is that these types of hearing losses can be assisted. If you suspect you have a hearing loss, then contact Edgecliff Hearing for a consultation.

DECEASED ESTATES - Help when you most need it ESL spoke to Heidi Sting, founder of Estate of Affairs. ESL: Tell us a little about Estate of Affairs HS: Estate of Affairs was designed to

help executors and bereaved time poor families dissolve their deceased estates. When someone passes away, they often leave a lifetime of memories that need to be rehoused before the home itself can be sold. This is where Estate of Affairs comes in.

ESL: So, what do you do? HS: Every family will naturally have

differing needs. Estate of Affairs will work to gain as much value for the estate as possible. We will work with various auction houses, galleries, jewellers, vintage shops etc., as well as managing direct sales through online sites and the multiple charity and donation runs. Our services will find the right home for everything.

ESL: What is your background? HS: Through my career, I spent over 30

years working for large multi-national companies, here and in Europe, in Human Resources. I was due for a change when I made the decision, prior to Covid, to leave that world behind in search of something new.

ESL: How did you get into this business? HS: I set up the business following the death of a dear friend. Once the

family had selected the items they wanted to keep, I found myself spending several months working at the home ensuring everything else was re-housed appropriately. So essentially, I got a first-hand view of how long and allencompassing the process could be. I realised that during such an emotional and stressful time, the last thing a lot of people want to be worrying about is an entire houseful of contents. In many cases, family members are living too far away to be at the house for such an extended period of time and just need someone local they can trust.

ESL: Why is it important to you? HS: I strongly believe in re-cycle/re-use

where feasible. There are two aspects to the work I do when I start with a new client. Firstly, I will invest time in researching the value of items to be re-housed. This will determine where best to sell or distribute items, which is the second step. While every home will have items for council pick-up, I approach the work with the intent of limiting this as much as possible. In my view, it is always sad to see a skip outside of a deceased estate filled with a lifetime of memories that could still benefit others in some way.

ESL: Why do you like doing it? HS: Simply put, I’ve always liked helping

people, which is probably why I spent much of my corporate career in senior customerfocused roles. Putting my unique talent for organisation to the best use and alleviating as much stress as possible from those who

are grieving seems like a very productive way to spend my time.

ESL: What makes it satisfying for you? HS: We are only the guardians of our

possessions during our lifetime, so it is satisfying knowing that someone’s memories are living on and being enjoyed by new generations. It’s always a nice experience when a buyer picks up something they love, and you know

it is going to be appreciated for another lifetime. For me personally, as a lover of art and sculpture, it’s a lot of fun as every new home is like entering a gallery with new things to discover and enjoy.

A SMALL GLASS BOTTLE TELLS A LARGE STORY It may be small, but this glass perfume bottle on display at the Sydney Jewish Museum tells a large story. Recently donated by Australian heritage consultant, David Logan, this 19th century glass bottle is the first Nazi-looted artwork in the Museum’s collection. Wilhelm Perlhoefter, David Logan’s grandfather, was a Jewish merchant in Breslau, Germany. At the age of 12 he began collecting porcelain, china and glass from antique dealers. This green bottle was one of a series of glass items in Perlhoefter’s collection, made by Bohemian master craftsman Friedrich Egermann using the lithyalin process. If you look closely, the surface of the bottle resembles marble or semi-precious stone. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Perlhoefter lost his business. Following Kristallnacht in 1938, Perlhoefter was later arrested and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp. He was released, aged 60, on condition that he leave Germany, so he and his wife migrated to England. As a condition of being allowed to leave Germany, local authorities demanded that museum directors from Breslau and the surrounding areas be ‘invited’ to select items from Perlhoefter’s collection. Those items that weren’t selected, his friend packed up in a crate, which was later shipped to England after the war. In 2018, David Logan’s cousin came across an exhibition of looted artworks at the Görlitz Museum of Cultural History in Germany, in which four pieces from Perlhoefter’s collection were being exhibited.

The museum stated they were looking for the rightful heirs of these items. After a process of proving they were indeed the descendants of Wilhelm Perhoefter, David repatriated one of the four vessels; it was decided the other three were to remain in the Görlitz Museum’s collection so they can continue to tell the story of the extent of Nazi looting in Germany.

DON’T LET LOCKDOWN KEEP YOU DOWN

North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club goes solar North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club has become the first registered club in Waverley to go solar through a new program jointly created by Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick City Councils.

The 3-Council Solar my Club program is a new off-shoot of the hugely successful and awardwinning Solar my School program which the three Councils established in 2016 to help schools make the switch to solar. More than 90% of schools in Sydney’s eastern suburbs have signed up to that program which was the first of its kind in NSW to help schools access affordable green energy. Kincoppal-Rose Bay, Bronte Public School and South Sydney High were among the first schools to join the program which has been expanded to other parts of Sydney. The program is a great example of how local organisations are investing in renewable energy solutions that make sense for their bottom line and for the environment. Currently, more than 20 organisations, including sporting clubs, synagogues, surf life saving clubs and others are participating. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club’s now fully operational solar power system, which also received a Waverley Council Small Environment Grant, will help the club reduce its carbon footprint. “North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club does so much for the community in terms of its

volunteer lifesavers helping keep our beachgoers safe, and by supporting our Access Bondi program for beachgoers of all abilities, so to be able to support the club’s sustainability efforts is just fantastic,” Mayor Masselos said. “It’s a great example of how local organisations are investing in renewable energy solutions that make sense for their bottom line and for the environment. “Solar my Club has such a great future in Sydney’s east and beyond and will help clubs and organisations in Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick City reduce carbon emissions one solar panel at a time.” Julien Palmer, General Manager, North Bondi SLSC said: “The significant reduction to the club’s environmental footprint, combined with the ongoing cost saving is a big win for the Club, and we thank Council for their support". In 2019, Waverley Council declared a state of climate and biodiversity emergency acknowledging that urgent collaborative action at all levels of government is necessary to protect our environment and community for future generations, and community groups and clubs are also part of the solution. “In June, Waverley Council also voted unanimously to support a Mayoral Minute calling on Council to revise its current net zero carbon emissions targets, and we are looking at being able to set a target of becoming net zero by 2030 rather than waiting till 2050,” Mayor Masselos said.

BUILDING A BETTER AND STRONGER RANDWICK

Coogee Oval Grandstand upgrade

Work to upgrade the Coogee Oval grandstand and amenities has recently been completed. The grandstand was the oldest building within the oval boundary, and was constructed in 1924. The refurbishment to the grandstand and the amenities block now ensures Coogee Oval can continue to function as a first-class sporting facility.

Dear Resident, I’m Noel D’Souza and I am co-ordinating the efforts of the independent candidates running for Randwick Council in December. Here I am with two of my running mates, Russell Fairfax and Carlos Da Rocha. Below is information about each of the independent candidates and the issues facing the community.

SOUTH WARD

NOEL D’SOUZA has retired from running his two pharmacies in Matraville after 35 years. He remains passionate about local politics. “I wanted to build a better South Ward and so I became your Councillor, then Mayor for two years. I will work hard on further improvements for South Ward while protecting it from threats like the cogeneration incinerator at Matraville, the Meriton overdevelopment at Little Bay and the cruise terminal at Yarra Bay.” CARLOS DA ROCHA is a community champion who takes an anti-development stance. A councillor since 2017, he says: “I want to preserve the unspoiled nature of Matraville and surrounding suburbs.” Issues at the top of his agenda include stopping the building of a cruise terminal at Yarra Bay and incinerator at Matraville. GEORGIA ANASTASOPOULOS is a pharmacist at Walsh’s Village Pharmacy in South Maroubra. She says her priorities are “a safe and clean environment, maintenance of our roads, footpaths and public amenities, and the safety and maintenance of beaches and other outdoor areas.”

EAST WARD

RUSSELL FAIRFAX is fighting to save and upgrade the gymnastics centre on Bunnerong Road, Matraville. Russell was a star player with

Easts in the 1970s. He is long-time local and will also fight to retain the shark nets protecting beachgoers. “I will respectfully ask the council to stop lobbying to remove nets until technology provides a similar barrier and safety.” PAUL COOPER has been deeply involved in the redevelopment of Heffron Park. Like Russell, he believes the building used by Bunnerong Gymnastics “inadequately services the young gymnasts of this area.” He would like to see a better, larger, more functional gymnastics centre built which will properly service the needs of local athletes. BRUCE PICKETT has lived in the Coogee area for over 40 years and runs a local business. He is a former Rugby League player with Easts and Newtown Jets. “I would like to contribute fresh ideas and vision to the council,” he says.

NORTH WARD

AUNTY BARBARA KEELEY was one of the ‘Stolen Generation.’ At the age of three, she and four siblings were forcibly removed from their mother’s home in La Perouse. If elected she’ll press the council to create a promised Stolen Generation memorial at La Perouse. Aunty Barbara says: “My core beliefs are ‘Equity, social justice and a fair go for all.’” ANNICK ANTOINE was born in France and has lived in Australia for 20 years, most of that time in the Randwick LGA. A fervent environmentalist, Annick says “I support programs that will lead to zero carbon emissions by 2030.” GARY DI PAOLA runs a small family business in South Coogee. If elected, Gary’s mission is to help people in the community impacted by COVID, He says: “I want to work with council to increase support for initiatives such as the Community Investment Program.”

Work to the grandstand and amenities began in November last year and took a little longer than expected as the scope of work increased due to the grandstand being more deteriorated than anticipated. As demolition began, it became clear the concrete grandstand structure would need to be entirely replaced, rather than repaired as initially thought.

GOOD NEWS Dear Editor, It is great news regarding the development by Randwick Council of new amenities for South Maroubra beach (Eastern Suburbs Life, July 2021). This is a further step in upgrading South Maroubra after two recently-developed parking areas. We now hope the council will give serious consideration to restoring the rock pools at the Nov south end of the beach, an issue looked at in Ed 23 November 2020 article in Eastern Suburbs Life headed ‘Call to Restore Rock Pools.’ The old rock pools await their rebirth! Kind regards, Dr Gerry and Bessie Frangakis Residents of South Maroubra

THE SECRET OF CHILDHOOD SUCCESS

If you are struggling with home schooling and wondering what you can teach your kids there is one key skill that we can with minimum effort teach our children – optimism! Yes, optimism can be learned!

Humans learn through social interaction. Children are highly impressionable when it comes to social learning as they mirror and copy behaviours they observe. Optimistic adults are powerful role models for children to develop and practice optimism. Practicing optimism has been proven through research to have an impact on short-and-long-term health and well-being and in improving our ability to withstand stress and anxiety. Optimistic children have an increased resilience and confidence and are often proactive in seeking assistance from others. This confidence results in them being more engaged with learning, social relationships and in embracing challenge and change. Optimistic thinking feels intrinsically better to most children than pessimistic thinking and as such optimism is a behaviour that can be quickly learned. This process has been coined ‘Learned Optimism’ by Martin Seligman, a leading psychologist specialising in positive psychology. Seligman describes teaching children optimism as “the creation of a positive strength, a sunny but solid future-mindedness that can be deployed throughout life - not only to fight depression and to come back from failure, but also to be the foundation of success and vitality."

An optimist tends to believe that the causes of a positive event are expected and warranted. So if an interaction is positive an optimistic child will think, “they like me and liked my ideas” rather than “they were just being nice and probably aren’t interested.” Optimists when faced with failure can see it as something they have the power to change in the future. As an example, an optimistic child who fails an exam will generally identify a specific reason such as “I didn’t study hard enough” rather than “I can’t do this because I am stupid”. However, this message of “Learned Optimism” comes with a warning! In the same way optimism can be learned so too can pessimism. Negative and pessimistic adults will create a fertile environment for pessimism to thrive and result in children with the same pessimistic attitudes and behaviours. If these habits are ongoing, Seligman believes children are at an increased risk of acquiring “Learned Helplessness”. Learned helplessness as the opposite of learned optimism results in an attitude of apathy and negativity. Pessimistic people believe that they have no control over their life, that they are victims of circumstances in each situation and not empowered to change any negative outcomes to improve their situation. We all can help support children to become more optimistic. So where to start? Try practising these five strategies to create an environment that supports the learning of optimism…

Food hampers on the way for local families

1. When faced with a challenging situation brainstorm with your child ways to change the situation into a positive one. Ask your child what could be done differently to turn a negative into a positive. 2. When children confide in you about a problem or share a negative situation they witnessed ask them what they would do to make it better. 3. Assist children to reframe their response to challenges or setbacks. When they are expressing negative feelings like “ I cannot draw” encourage them to reframe their attitude to the activity with encouragement that results in language being reframed such as “You like drawing and the more you practice the better you will get!” 4. Practice optimism regularly. Each evening before bed or over dinner ask your child to think of two things from the day that they are grateful for and two things they are looking forward to tomorrow. Older children may want to keep an optimism journal and record

these their responses each day. ( It is also a beautiful memento to look back on as an adult). 5. Be a good role model and use the techniques above yourself. As always children learn through observation, and you are their most influential teacher. Optimism as a foundation for success and wellbeing makes it an essential subject for home learning. I like to think of it as ‘Vitamin O’ for our next generation and a preventative strategy to vaccinate against depression and apathy. So how optimistic are you?? Why not take the Learned Optimism test during lockdown! https://www.seemypersonality.com Optimism-Test#q1 or hear Martin Seligman presenting on Positive Psychology during the Pandemic on “You Tube” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1hauE_ OKP8 Robyn Monro Miller

Randwick families doing it tough during COVID are getting a helping hand from Randwick City Council with 200 food boxes being distributed each week.

The hampers are packed by volunteers at the Addi Road Community Centre in Marrickville and distributed to Randwick City families in need through local service providers The Lexo Hub, Kooloora Community Centre, Junction Neighbourhood Centre and Weave Community Services. Randwick Mayor Danny Said recently spent the morning at Addi Road packing food hampers alongside volunteers including Qantas flight crew. “Everyone’s doing it tough at the moment during lockdown, but some more than others. These food hampers will go to local families most in need and will help put food on the table. “Council will continue to provide the food hampers for the coming weeks while there is a need within our community. “I’d particularly like to commend Addi Road for the wonderful work they do and all the volunteers giving up their time to help others,” explains Mayor Said.

Addi Road ambassador, Randwick local and former Socceroo Craig Foster said they’ve setup the food hamper crisis relief centre specifically to help housebound families in need. “Over 60 organisations come here every day throughout the week...picking up these food hamper boxes that all of our wonderful volunteers pack every day. “Were churning out hundreds of boxes a day to people right around Sydney in need, of course including Randwick Council. “There are people in need in every LGA right around Sydney and anybody who needs help, needs food, whether it’s today, tomorrow or over the weekend you can get in touch with us here at Addi Road.”

Covid drives more effective marketing

This is why Eastern Suburbs Life has launched the Eastern Suburbs Network Group. Specifically for key members of businesses, community bodies and social groups it allows members to meet each other, share news and keep in touch without having to attend time consuming “in person” meetings. Members can also use a free community publishing platform to share news, articles, events and special offers with local communities throughout Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs (See page 3) or alternatively message each other in absolute privacy.

Imagine if you could network without leaving your desk, and advertise at the same time! If nothing, Covid has taught us that we must adapt to meet the rapidly changing circumstances it has forced upon us. Pivoting is now the word on everyone’s tongue, so why should marketing be any different? The fact is that many, many businesses and organisations are having to work at least 30% harder just to achieve what they did before Covid arrived. So what are the implications for marketing? Put simply, it means that marketing must evolve to deliver more value for the same, or a lower, price.

Members can also promote themselves in hard copy, digital format and online. To ensure diversity, the number of members in any one category cannot exceed 5% of the total number of members. Lockdown will not last for ever. Apply to join today and start building relationships for both now, and the future. Membership is just $175 per 6 months (less than $1 a day) – To help with the lockdown members joining before Aug 31 will receive 6 months free hard copy advertising, a free online directory listing, a $300 advertising discount voucher and a 40% discount on additional advertising rates. WAVERLEY

Future-proofing residential developments against rising temperatures

The state and federal governments are being urged to act on the results of research by Waverley Council demonstrating simple ways residential developments in Sydney’s east can cope with climate change.

RANDWICK

Storm brewing over ferry service plans

Randwick Mayor Danny Said has lashed out at state government plans for a ferry service between Kurnell and La Perouse. He says the an Environmental Impact Statement released by Transport NSW into the proposed project displays a cynical disregard for the community in the La Perouse area because it is “the same Liberal State government department that is taking buses away from that very spot.”

Waverley Council’s Future Proofing Residential Development to Climate Change Project found heating and cooling of buildings can be improved through window glazing, improved shading and choice of building materials. The Project won the Planning Disruptor Award at the recent Greater Sydney Planning Awards. “We want to avoid dwellings that require high levels of air conditioning, are expensive to run and pose health risks during a blackout,” says Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos. Research by the project team found that as the number of warm days increase, cooling needs for houses and apartments may surge by over 300 per cent by 2070. “Council needs to know that the buildings we approve in our area will be safe in a hotter climate in the future,” Mayor Masselos says. “We want to avoid dwellings that require high levels of air conditioning, are expensive to run and pose health risks during a blackout. “All governments have a responsibility to accelerate efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the public, private and commercial sectors and adapt building regulations to prepare for future climate conditions.

The proposed $50 million project involves construction of a wharf which many locals say will have adverse environmental consequences. It is feared the ferry service will worsen existing traffic gridlock in the peak summer season. Mayor Said sees the plans as the latest attack on the people of the South East by the state government, coming in the wake of proposals to build a massive cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay and an industrial incinerator at Matraville. A ferry service across the bay was started in the 1890s and operated for about 80 years. A storm destroyed the wharf on this side of the bay in 1974.

Parks lit up during lockdown

“Therefore, we would also like to see State and Federal governments use future climate data to update planning instruments as soon as possible.” Meanwhile, the council is reassessing its 2050 carbon emission targets and is expected to declare that it aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030. “Achieving net zero carbon emissions is a matter of urgency so that the planet can keep global temperatures below two degrees above pre-industrial levels as per the Paris Agreement on climate change,” Mayor Masselos says. “It is estimated that 500,000 houses and apartments will be built over the next three years across Australia and these dwellings must be built to cope with the projected warmer temperatures affecting the approximately 1.3 million people who will live in them.”

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone, The past month of stay-at-home orders has been extremely challenging, especially in the Eastern Suburbs. The ongoing community transmission of COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our community members, local organisations, and small businesses. During these challenging times, our office is working with local charities to deliver vital food and necessities to crisis shelters and others experiencing food insecurity. You can drop off any donations of nonperishable food items to our office from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. We would like to thank those of you who have already made a donation for your generosity. We know that sudden lockdown and loss of employment is also incredibly detrimental to mental health, so we encourage all members of our community to seek out mental health support services that have been made available. It is great to see our community come together and complying readily with social distancing, mask-wearing and getting tested for COVID-19. We ask that over the coming weeks in lockdown you continue to take every possible precaution to keep yourselves and your loved ones safe.

COVID-19 EMAIL LIST

Due to the ongoing stay-at-home orders in Greater Sydney, daily updates regarding COVID-19 community transmission and public health guidelines have become imperative.
