Article P7

NYE UNWRAPPED: Ring in a better year P4 WHAT'S ON BAYSIDE P5

The fact is, that in NSW, we have fared better than most countries in the world and can be proud of our achievements. Of course, we still have supply chain problems, and many businesses are struggling to find the staff they need run efficiently, but on balance, we have been spared the worst and can look forward to a “Traditional Christmas” with the advantage of the new tradition of “Black Friday” sales, that now appear to be eclipsing the old tradition of New Year Sales. Those who hunger for more information and statistics on how things are going can turn to Page 7 and read Dave Sharma’s very heartening editorial. Those seeking a novel gift for a friend, or family member, can turn to page 8 and commission a personal hand-drawn picture of a favourite dog, cat, fish, bird etc. Pet Portraits by Ruth always captures a pet’s character and astonishes people by its accuracy. It’s a gift that lives on and can bring joy year-after-year. To order your hand-drawn portrait call Ruth on 0423 816 413. Alternatively you might consider owning a boat for the day with the help of My Sydney Boat, also on Page 8. Not only do you get a boat, but you also get a friendly, international crew who have sailed in the Mediterranean and now know Sydney Harbour like the back of their hand or, should we say, “connaître comme sa poche”?

Or, something else with panache, that is equally stylish and unique and also helps reduce land fill. That’s on Page 9 where Champagne Collective show you how they recycle empty Champagne bottles and turn them into environmentally friendly gifts priced between $25 and $95. Not racy enough for you? How about “Painting the Nude” art classes, featured of course, towards the back of the paper on Page 16. You can buy them for yourself or buy a special “Gift Card” for a friend or loved one to attend the art classes every Friday from 7pm. On your way to Page 16, you could also “Shake Things Up” with a Christmas Gift Card from Hoyts. They can be bought online from hoyts.com.au or in the cinema at Eastgardens. What better way to return to “Christmas As Usual” than by going to the movies on Boxing Day? Finally, you can give yourself a gift for free by joining Friends of Double Bay. It’s perfect for those who live, work, shop or play in Double Bay and lets you make friends, share news, attend events and keep up to date with Double Bay articles, happenings, special offers and more, all in one place. To join, free of charge, visit www.friendsofdoublebay.org, or call Rose on 0418 400 697.

As always, our grateful thanks go to our advertisers, writers, contributors, printers, distributors and all the others whose commitment helped us through lockdown. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Suddenly it’s over and a traditional Christmas seems to be on the horizon. In NSW we are over 90% “double vaxed”, borders are becoming more open, international travel restarts from Dec 1 and, in most places, we can again shake hands and meet family and friends without feeling guilty if we don’t wear a mask.

NYE UNWRAPPED: Ring in a better year Sydney is set to bring in the new year with its usual spectacular fireworks shows.

As well as the vantage points around the Opera House, Botanic Gardens and Harbour Bridge, there are many popular Eastern Suburbs sites with superb harbour views – such as McKell Park and Yarranabbe Park in Darling Point – offered by Woollahra Council.

Family-friendly fireworks will go off at 9pm and this eight-minute Welcome to Country display will welcome everyone to Gadigal land. Curated by Sydney-based artist Blak Douglas it will be accompanied by an exclusive soundtrack and hip-hop performance.

Other great local viewing spots – also with mostly free tickets but no BYO: Dudley Page Reserve in Military Road, Dover Heights. With a 2,500 capacity, this is a family-friendly area offering panoramic harbour views and an extensive grassy area for picnics plus there’ll be a DJ, licensed bar and food stalls.

At midnight, a 12-minute show will close 2021 and celebrate the start of 2022, featuring pyrotechnic effects from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and barges in the harbour. The shows can be live-streamed or tune into the synchronised simulcast on KIIS 106.5FM.

The Rose Bay Foreshore means you’ll be at water level for the fireworks. Entering via Caledonia Road, the small capacity of 150 should translate to a fun, beach party atmosphere. Not far from there, at Dumaresq Reserve, is another foreshore spot with grassy spaces for picnics and a 250-people capacity. At Double Bay, the Murray Rose Pool and delightful Blackburn Gardens have limited Harbour and city views but offer space for 500.

In addition, from 8.30pm, amazing projections – including of dancers, whale and emu totems – will be featured on the Harbour Bridge pylons while lighting effects on the eastern side will sparkle on the harbour foreshore.

Residents will be notified of local road closures, which will be managed by police on the night.

For those seeking good viewing sites, the City of Sydney is offering locations around the harbour, including Embarkation Park, Potts Point; Beare Park, Elizabeth Bay; many of which are free entry but all of which are ticketed – because of Covid considerations – though you need to be quick as, at time of going to press, many are already heavily booked.

DAVE SHARMA

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH As we approach Christmas and the end of the year, I expect many of us are looking forward to a welldeserved break. 2021 has been a tough year for many — for small businesses, for school students, for people with family and loved ones overseas, for those with family in aged care facilities, and for our healthcare and frontline workers.

Thankfully, our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic is now well underway, and life is returning to normal. Businesses are open and trading again. Public health restrictions are ending. Family gatherings and events are now possible. And regional and international travel is resuming. This has been made possible by the success of the vaccine rollout in Australia and the very high rates of vaccination. Here in New South Wales, 92% of our over 16 population is now fully vaccinated, whilst 95% have received a first dose. Across Australia, 85% of the over 16 population is fully vaccinated, and 92% have received a first dose. Australia will end up having one of the highest vaccination rates of any country around the world. The economic support measures we put in place to support businesses and households during the pandemic have meant that our economy is primed for recovery. The Australian economy is now larger than it was pre-pandemic, with more people employed. Job advertisements are at a level 30% higher

than pre-pandemic, and business and consumer confidence are higher. Our high vaccination rates and strong public health system mean we are now in a position to open our borders and resume international travel. Fully vaccinated Australians are now able to travel overseas and return without quarantine. From December 1st, students, working holiday makers, skilled migrants, family visa holders and tourists from Japan, Korea and Singapore who are fully vaccinated will also be able to enter Australia. This will help our tourist and travel sector get back on its feet, support our local universities, and alleviate the workforce shortages that have emerged as a major challenge in so many industries. So, whilst it has been a tough year, we can look back and be proud of how we have emerged as a nation from this pandemic — in better shape than nearly any other nation around the world — and we can look forward with optimism to the year ahead. But we should also remember this Christmas that some amongst us will be struggling, facing uncertainty and anxiety. In particular, this past year has seen incidents of domestic violence and abuse increase, with more women needing support in order to leave violent and abusive relationships. This year I am running a Christmas Appeal to support three local organisations, Lou's Place, the Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre,

and the Run for Good Project, who do so much vital work in this area.

my office at Level 3, 179-191 New South Head Road, Edgecliff and we will arrange delivery. Or, if you are a business and able to make a sizeable contribution, we can arrange collection.

My office in Edgecliff will be taking donations of essential goods for these organisations to supply to women and children in need. If you are able to donate shampoo and conditioner, body wash, sanitary items, women’s undergarments, or socks, please drop them to

My best wishes to you and your family for a merry Christmas, a peaceful New Year, and a restful holiday period.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA GEORGE FAIRFOWL MACARTHUR – PART 2

Barker appointed him head of The King's School which had closed for lack of funds.

In our Builders of Modern Australia series, describing the remarkable contribution of the people of St Mark’s, Darling Point, we reflect on the life of the Reverend George Macarthur, the first Rector of our permanent church. Rosemary Hayman, a noted genealogist and grand-niece (x3) of Reverend George Macarthur (GFM), has been able to identify more than 350 relatives of our subject (who was the grand-nephew of John Macarthur), who have a connection to St Mark’s. This is not uncommon at St Mark’s as many of the families inter-married and thus many of the leading members of Sydney society by the 1870’s were closely related. As the district became populated by prosperous individuals, many of them building substantial mansions, and having large families, their impact on the social climate of the new nation was far reaching. It was said that it was very difficult to become a Darling Pointer, or “pointers” as they were known, as entry to this social set was mostly by marriage, most often celebrated at St Mark’s. Indeed, this tight-knit group regularly held grand balls in the European tradition and even had their own Darling Point Polka. From this narrow microcosm of Sydney society were to emerge many of the leaders of modern Australia, making their mark in the professions and politics. Their

In July 1868, the school at Macquarie Fields officially became The King's School. Then, with 38 pupils, Macarthur returned to the Parramatta building in 1869. He is credited with consolidating the school which increased in numbers and accommodation and establishing Australia’s first cadet corps. Photo: The Darling Point Polka. progeny dominated commerce and became leading pastoralists and industrialists and the values they maintained were spread throughout the prospering new nation. Reverend George Macarthur was central to this society and added a most valuable contribution to it through expanding the St Mark’s Collegiate School, where the church provided formal tutelage to the children of the leading families. Macarthur was an excellent schoolmaster, educator and organiser. So much so that he eventually resigned from St Mark’s to pursue his vocation in this field at his own school at Macquarie Fields, near Camden. Eventually in 1864, after much negotiation whereby he demanded total authority over the school, Bishop

In 1884 the church resumed control of the school. GFM resigned from the school after losing his total authority in June 1886 and became the minister at All Saints, Bodalla, where he stayed until 1888. George died on June 16, 1890, aged 65, in Ashfield, Sydney and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery. MEDITERRANEAN DAY CRUISES ON SYDNEY HARBOUR

If you’re desperate for a taste of the Med and can’t wait for the European summer, then Rose Bay charter company My Sydney Boat is doing its bit to bring the Amalfi Coast and Cannes to Sydney.

French/Australian captain Elodie divides her time between boating on the French Riviera and working the Aussie summer. Elodie started My Sydney Boat three years ago after seeing a gap in the market to offer locals the chance to explore the hidden coves and pristine waterways of Sydney Harbour for swimming, bay-hopping and deserted beach picnics. It’s commonplace for Mediterranean holidaymakers and families to charter fast, agile sports boats with a local captain to visit nearby islands and secluded bays accessible only by water, but this type of boating didn’t exist in Sydney. In 2018, Elodie saw an opportunity to offer Sydneysiders a Mediterranean-style boating experience. “The scene here is mainly backpacker booze cruises, bucks & hens boats, sailing charters or very up-market motor yachts for special occasions, but none of them venture more than a few kilometres from the Harbour Bridge and no-one was offering fast, fun boats for families or a small group to head out and explore all the best bits of our amazing harbour, the way the local boaties do” says Elodie. Sydney Harbour is one of the largest and most beautiful natural harbours in the world,

with over 90 bays, 20 beaches and two national parks. One of things that surprises many of Elodie’s guests is the stunning nature and wildlife that exists so close to the city, such as resident fur seals and penguins, visiting dolphins and migrating whales. “It’s remarkable what you can see if you know where to look” says Elodie, who loves showing locals places they’ve never heard of, or knew existed. “Our clients often can’t believe they’re still in Sydney when we spot a seal or pod of dolphins or take them to a deserted National Park beach in Middle Harbour with waterfalls and nesting sea eagles.” The other unique aspect to My Sydney Boat is of course their boat! Elodie chose a chic, high-powered European sports cruiser that can get around the harbour quickly, go offshore and land on a beach. They’ve also stacked it with everything you need for an amazing day out, including two inflatable paddleboard/kayaks, a floating lily pad to play on, a swim platform, sunlounge, two bar fridges, seating, and BYO dining for up to ten guests, and of course a Bose Bluetooth music system to play some funky Mediterranean summer tunes. It all sounds like the perfect Christmas gift or school holiday activity!

When style meets sustainability Do you love a glass of champagne? Do you feel guilty about throwing that precious bottle into the bin?

Champagne Collective was created as a reaction to answering – Yes- to both of those questions. “I hated seeing beautiful bottles discarded at the end of the night,” explains Shelley Seddon, Founder of the Company. “I wanted to find a way to reuse them and then, discovered that champagne bottles make gorgeous candles and are a great way to contribute to the circular economy.”

And in case you were wondering, the candles smell divine too! There are four luxurious fragrances to choose from: Premium Champagne: The glamorous signature scent marking those special celebrations. Champagne and Strawberries: A fruity and fresh fragrance for rosé champagne candles. Piper Champagne Pomegranate Cocktail: A special sparkly blend for the silly season. Holly berry and Cedarwood: A limited-edition Bollinger candle to create a “Holly Bolly Christmas”.

Refinancing your loan

With interest rates at historically low levels, it's worth finding out if you could get a better deal on your home loan. One of the most common questions asked is “should I refinance my loan?”

The answer is, if you’re thinking about refinancing your loan or you’ve had your loan for some time now, chances are your loan no longer provides you with the features you want. Some of the reasons to refinance your loan: • Looking for a better interest rate. • Looking to use the equity in your home to renovate. • Your current loan features don’t match your needs – you’re looking for new features and add-ons such as flexible repayments. • Your living situation has changed – you have additional family members or family members who’ve recently moved out. team can help you!

Five years later and Champagne Collective is the original champagne bottle upcycling company, that has already repurposed thousands of bottles rescued from events, restaurants and bars. Normally these beautiful bottles together with 1.36 million tonnes of glass containers would end up in landfill or a bottle crusher. Offering a uniquely stylish and sustainable gift, Champagne Collective understands the value of an exquisite champagne bottle. They lovingly save, collect and clean the bottles before cutting them to size and polishing them to a smooth finish. Using eco-friendly wooden wicks the candles are hand-poured with an all-natural custom soy/ coconut wax blend that is cleaner, healthier and non-toxic, giving longer hours of burning enjoyment.

NEWS 9

The upcycling just keeps going too! As once your candle has burned down, the beautiful glass containers can be repurposed again and again. They will make a stylish vase for flowers or a designer plant, a glamorous makeup brush caddy, or even a clever desktop holder. So, if you’re environmentally aware and would like to help in a small way, consider the gift of reclaimed, upcycled champagne glass, filled with 100% natural wax for a relaxed, enjoyable and very consciously-stylish Christmas. We call it upscale upcycling!

In December Ed 36 and Ed 37, I walk down Edgecliff Rd. The walk will be in two parts as this is a long road and there are many landmarks to point out. I begin the walk at the junction of Ocean St and Edgecliff Rd where there is a small reserve. (1) This was once Edgecliff House, built about 1861 by Edward Wise, Justice of the Supreme Court, later occupied by William Busby. The big fig trees were given to the Woollahra Council with the land from Edgecliff House by the Terry family on the condition that they would not be cut down. ' Across the road is an Art Deco building (2) which once the office of Malcolm Bligh Turnbull AC, now a retired Australian politician, who was the 29th Prime Minister of Australia from 2015 to 2018.

3

No. 359 Edgecliff Rd is Fernbank. This was building was built in 1884 by Freeman, a well known Sydney photographer and was acquired by Sydney Gilchrist. Miss Louisa Jane Gumey established a school here in 1887, moving it to Kambala in Bellevue Hill, from which the present Rose Bay girl's school took its name. The house was one of a couple of identical Rustic Gothic houses the eastern one remaining mostly unchanged while Fernbank was vastly altered.

Next door at No. 355A Edgecliff Rd, is Fairlight. a Victorian Regency house built in 1855 by Mr Joseph William Cocks.

4

Heading down Edgecliff Rd, I turn left at Roslyndale Ave, which is a cul-de-sac. No. 6 Roslyndale Ave is 'Hawthornden' on leasehold from the Cooper Estate, the house was started in 1858 by broker William James Lennon, and occupied 1860-65 by John Donald McLean; 1865-68 by Henry Armitage; 1868-76 by Sir Frederick Darley; from 1876 by Edward Macpherson, then from 1919 by Macdonald Hamilton becoming the P & O line manager's residence.

5

No. 38 Roslyndale Ave (6), there is a Victorian Rustic Gothic style house built by broker William James Lennon around 1865. F. Clarke was the architect. Back on Edgecliff Rd, I pass a small park and railway cutting. This is the Eastern Suburbs Railway line. If you go down Wallaroy Rd you will see the whole cutting.

Proposals were made to extend the suburban rail system into the Eastern Suburbs, some going back into the 19th century. A start was made in immediate post WWII years and work was carried out at Central (Chalmers St excavation) and at the eastern end of the Domain but ceased in the late 1950s. The scheme got under way again after the 1965 State Election with the intention of going as far as Kingsford. The section as far as Bondi Junction was built, and officially opened by the Premier, the Hon. Neville Wren at Martin Place Station on Sat, June 23, 1979. No. 85 Wallaroy Rd, Woodlands is surrounded by a lucious hedge. This house was built around 1884 as the home of Mr Samuel H. Smyth.

8

I head back to Edgecliff Rd, to Queen St, where there is Gaden Reserve. Laid out in 1947, it was named in honour of John Gaden, OBE, Alderman of Woollahra 1934-48 and Mayor in 1940. The Senior Citizen's Centre was opened in 1960 as one of the Woollahra Council's Centenary projects.

Don't miss the Raoul Wallenberg Garden at the corner of Queen St and Edgecliff Rd. A monument was erected in 1985, honouring the Swedish diplomat and humanist, Raoul Wallenberg, who during 1944-45, saved thousands of lives in Hungary. As you turn left onto Edgecliff Rd you will pass an art deco building called 'Hillside Flats'. Built in 1936, E.C. Pitt and A.M. Bolot were the architects. This building is a residential interpretation of Skyscraper Gothic in red texture brick. This was once 'Hillside' an early cottage rebuilt by William George Laidley as a Rustic Gothic Style house.

DON’T POISON OUR COMMUNITY!

The leader of the campaign against Suez’s proposed waste incinerator at Matraville has lashed out at the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for giving tacit support to the plan.

Chris Hanson was speaking at a community rally near the site earmarked for waste incineration at Opal’s paper mill – a location bordered by residential streets and the local pony club. Suez plans to bring in truckloads of waste which it will burn to provide steam to Opal’s paper mill. The project would have a building as big as the Southpoint Shopping Centre and release toxic fumes from a 60 metre high chimney stack (that’s as high as the main sail on the Sydney Opera House!). The rally on Bunnerong Road took place the day after Mr Hanson and community leaders held a meeting with officials from the EPA and the office of Energy and Environment Minister, Matt Kean. Representing the community were South Ward independent councillor Noel D’Souza and Matraville Precinct Chair, Steve McAndrew. According to Mr Hanson, a chemical engineer living in Little Bay, the officials would not confirm whether Suez’s project was permissible under the Energy from Waste Infrastructure Plan. “The EPA seems to think they can promote the burning of waste in NSW, then switch it off when NSW has a circular economy” Mr Hanson told the community rally beside La Perouse Pony Club. “We’re here to tell them they are dreaming!” He said the legislation allowing waste incineration for power generation is flawed and will “kill off any attempt to reduce, reuse or recycle, or create a circular economy in NSW.” The pony club rally was attended by politicians representing all three levels of government, along with a number of locals whose homes are close to Suez’s proposed incinerator. The immediate past Mayor of Randwick, Danny Said, grew up in Matraville when the area was heavily polluted by industrial plants such as ICI (now Orica). “To this day, I suffer from lung damage caused by chlorine and other air pollutants,” he told Eastern Suburbs Life. “We can’t go back to those times.”

State member for Maroubra, Michael Daley, said the community already had to live with more than its fair share of heavy industry. “We’ve copped the port, the airport, the sewage treatment plant at Malabar, but an incinerator plant spewing out toxic chemicals 100 metres from peoples’ homes is too much.”

Federal member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, said the toxic legacy of industries had turned Matraville-Botany into the most polluted area of NSW. “The incinerator would make it ten times worse,” he said. “As well as the air pollution, there’d be a massive increase in truck movements.”

One of the residents whose home would be in the shadow of the massive chimney stack is mother of two school-age children, Tanya Phillips. “I’m angry that the proposal has got this far,” she said. “The community has got to fight it.”

Newly-elected Mayor Dylan Parker said the turnout at the pony club rally demonstrated the community’s concern about the incinerator plan. He said: “The community is against it, the council is against it, and it has to be dropped.”

EPA under fire for supporting incinerator proposal

An EPA spokesperson told Eastern Suburbs Life: “Suez has not lodged a development application for its proposal with the Department of Planning, so the EPA isn’t able to comment on any aspects of its plan or advise on whether it would be permitted under the NSW Government’s Energy from Waste Infrastructure Plan.” Tony Maguire

Locals rally to save Eastern Suburbs buses

A large crowd rallied at Martin Place on Nov 24 to protest against the NSW Government’s plans to cut 24 Eastern Suburbs bus routes and privatise the bus network.

The crowd heard from politicians, unions, and community representatives about the impacts of the bus cuts. Dr Marjorie O’Neill, MP, Member for Coogee, and a driving force in the campaign against the cuts, due to commence on Dec 5, said they were being fought because they were services people depended on every single day. Dr. O’Neill said over 100,000 people had so far signed petitions against the cuts, and a community win had been the retention of the 373 Coogee to Circular Quay bus. Michael Daley, MP, Shadow Attorney General and Member for Maroubra told the crowd we would be getting a public transport system worse than 20 years ago, and Ron Hoenig, MP and Member for Heffron, accused the NSW Government of being heartless and reprehensible. Jo Haylen, MP, Shadow Minister for Transport and Member for Summer Hill criticised the NSW Government’s transport record, and Cllr Dylan Parker, the new Mayor of Randwick City Council read excerpts from letters he’d received from residents about how the cuts would affect their lives.

Representing unions were David Babineau of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, who told of job losses and the impact of privatisation, and Michael Whaites from the Australian Nurses & Midwifery Federation, who said the cuts would make travel to and from the city more difficult for nurses. The result, he said, could be some deciding to work closer to home rather than travel to a city hospital. Speaking from a community perspective about the cuts was Marissa Ely, the founder of Maroubra Community which organised a petition against the cuts. At the end of the rally, Dr. Marjorie O’Neill told the crowd: “As I said, Dec 5 these bus cuts are set to come in, and overnight the bus stops are going to disappear, which is a complete and utter shame, but even as they disappear, we will not stop this fight.” NSW Minister for Transport and Roads, the Hon. Rob Stokes, MP and Member for Pittwater was invited but did not attend the rally. Pauline Wall

Planning underway to put on Coogee 2021 NYE fireworks

The 9pm Coogee Sparkles NYE fireworks could be back on this year with Randwick Council currently developing plans to host the family-friendly event if Public Health Orders at the time permit. The fireworks were not held in 2020 due to COVID and the 2021 fireworks were cancelled again in August by Council due to the uncertainty around public health order restrictions on outdoor gatherings. However, since this time, health orders are relaxing inline with increasing vaccination rates and easing Government rules. With the changing climate, Council staff are currently investigating how the event could be held safely provided that the Public Health Orders, applicable at the time, permit an event of this type without requiring fencing, ticketing or seating. The fireworks would also require agreement and support from local and state agencies before proceeding.

Residents fear there will be pedestrian fatalities in Broome Street, South Maroubra, unless measures are taken to slow traffic. Broome Street runs above the southern end of Maroubra beach and people crossing the road to access the beach have to run the gauntlet of cars travelling well above the 40 km/h speed limit. The dangerous stretch of road is between Curtin Crescent and Tyrwhitt Street. “It’s difficult to see vehicles approaching because there are usually parked cars on both sides of the road,” says Dr Gerry Frangakis, who is leading the campaign for safety improvements with his wife Bessie. The couple stroll down to the beach every afternoon from their home in Rodman Avenue and Bessie says: “It’s generally a challenge getting across the road safely. It’s only a matter of time before a pedestrian gets killed.”

Gerry believes he may have averted an accident recently when he yelled a warning to a teenage boy about to cross the road in front of oncoming traffic. “There’s a dip in the road and people accelerate to dangerous speeds as they’re driving down Broome Street from Fitzgerald Avenue,” he says. Ragna Swyter, who lives in nearby Curtin Crescent, says: “It’s terrible, especially on weekends and school holidays when nipper classes are taking place down at South Maroubra Surf Club.” She fears for the safety of her five-year-old son Jonne. Bessie and Gerry raised the issue with local independent Councillor Anthony Andrews, who helped organise a meeting at the site with Randwick Council’s Integrated Transport Manager, Tony Lehmann. Council has since upgraded speed signage and is looking at a range of measures to improve safety.

The tide could be turning in favour of the campaign against a monstrous cruise ship terminal in quiet Yarra Bay.

With indecent haste, the NSW government said the mega-ships would be welcome in Yarra Bay.

After previously supporting the plan, the NSW government seems to have changed its stance, with Premier Dominic Perrottet saying a discussion was required around allowing mixed Navy and cruise ship use of Garden Island.

Then COVID came along and effectively shut down the international cruise industry as it turned out that passenger ships are the perfect breeding ground for the deadly virus. Meanwhile, there have been recent studies highlighting the hazards of cruise ships to the environment.

However, federal Defence Minister Peter Dutton has bunkered down on the issue, insisting that Garden Island be reserved for Navy ships. The idea of a new terminal has been on the agenda for three years, with Royal Caribbean and other companies pushing for purpose-built docking facilities for the mega-liners which can’t fit under the harbour bridge to the terminal at White Bay. Such ships include the 90-metre high Ovation of the Seas (pictured above).

Local activist Maria Poulos Conkin, who has led the campaign to stop the mega cruise ships invading Yarra Bay, urges locals and other lovers of the bay to keep up the fight. “The best solution is simply NO new cruise ship terminals,” she says. “We shouldn’t be destroying our bays and beaches to accommodate the cruise industry’s destructive business models.” Tony Maguire

Sydney gym owner’s proactive measures for COVID-safe indoor fitness reduce the airborne spread of COVID-19. The AerisGuard Bioactive Filter Treatment coats deep bed HVAC filters with an antimicrobial coating and contains a safe, readily biodegradable active biocide that kills bacteria, fungi and SARS-CoV-2, therefore together with a HEPA filter AerisGuard Bioactive Filter Treatment helps reduce the risk of this virus spreading through air conditioning systems and the air of indoor spaces.

Ben Lucas at Flow Athletic in Paddington

Restrictions may have eased but business owners across Sydney’s Eastern suburbs are taking action to minimise the spread of COVID-19 indoors to keep their customers and workers safe. Flow Athletic’s gym owner, Ben Lucas had an ever-growing ‘to do' list to prepare for reopening earlier this month. At the top of his priorities was putting in place strategies and practices that help reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading within the gym environment. In the first week of reopening, Ben arranged for a HVAC professional to treat the gym’s air conditioning filters with a new Australian developed filter treatment that helps

The Aeris filter treatment is being used across a range of businesses and industries in Australia and overseas to support the COVID-safe return to indoor settings such as schools, public transport, hospitality venues and more. Ben has also stocked up on Aeris’ COVIDkilling surface disinfectant Aeris Defence which is used throughout the gym to clean benches, equipment, and other high touch hard surfaces. “We have taken extra steps to help keep our members and staff safe. We clean our equipment after every session and at the end of each day with an Aeris disinfectant that kills COVID-19 on contact and provides up to 7 days of lasting protection against the virus,” explained Mr Lucas. “We have had our air conditioning filters treated with the Aeris product to help clean the air within the gym to minimise the risk of COVID-19 spreading through the air.”

Remembrance Day 2021 The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918 marked the moment the guns went silent at the end of World War I. From a population of fewer than five million Australia enlisted 416,809 people of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.

Different professional artists models pose for the art class each week. of the Paddington-Woollahra RSL sub-branch. It included addresses from guests, live music and the laying of wreaths, that were later taken outside and placed beside the war memorial. We were reminded of the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy today by a reading of John McCrae’s poem Flanders Fields, the first verse of which is: In Flanders fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below. In safe times it is easy to forget that “Freedom isn’t free” - Another poem (by Jeremiah A. Denton) brings home the gratitude we owe our armed forces. “It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organiser, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.” It is a message that must be carried from generation to generation, and the laying of wreaths and the presence of children from local schools, helps ensure it will be. Centennial and Moore Park Trust set to go

Waverley Council has accused the state government of dismantling the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust under cover of COVID. Macquarie Street wants to absorb the 38-year-old trust into a broad administrative umbrella body called the Greater Sydney Parklands Trust. This would cover a number of major parks in different parts of Sydney. The government has drafted a Bill paving the way for this process.

For details on exhibitions and events, visit woollahragallery.com.au The Gallery is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm at 548 New South Head Road, Double Bay. Admission is free.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2022 on behalf of everyone at Woollahra Council.

“The proposed Bill has a significant impact on our ‘backyard’, yet the consultation is being rushed through under the cover of COVID,” Labor mayor Paula Masselos told Council. She fears the legislation could lead to commercialisation of the parklands. Just one month was allowed for public exhibition of the Bill and that time has now run out, with the government rejecting Waverley’s appeal for an extension. Councillors agreed to a motion by Councillor Masselos that the government be urged to establish a specific Community Trustee Board for Centennial Park and Moore Park (rather than a group that covers a number of different parklands) and that a Council representative be appointed to that Board.

Alfresco initiative

Waverley Council has an introduced a fast-tracked approval process for outdoor dining to bring the LGA back to life after the COVID lockdown. Food and drink retail businesses are being invited to apply for temporary permits to operate alfresco/outdoor dining areas in public spaces. The permits will be valid until April 18, 2022. A report to Council noted that COVID had brought about a sharp drop in outdoor dining permits, down from 150 to 119. This decline is being addressed through a new online application process aimed at securing approvals within 10 working days. The report said: “The temporary alfresco dining initiative will help activate public spaces in the Waverley local government area (LGA) over summer and support food and drink retail premises recover more quickly after extended lockdown restrictions.”

Council petitioned for more skate parks

Council has received a 1086 signaturepetition calling for additional skate facilities. Submitted online through Change.org, the petition said: “The Bondi Skate Park is over utilised and despite being accessible to all ages, there is a conflict between experienced and inexperienced users.” The petition noted the “mainstreaming of skateboarding through the Olympics” along with increased participation in solo sports during the COVID lockdown had underlined the need for further infrastructure.

RANDWICK

Year of Tiger celebrations are set to be roaring success

Randwick Council has earmarked a generous $50,000 for Chinese New Year celebrations in Kingsford in February, up from $17,500 this year. Lunar New Year falls on Tues, Feb 1 and the council-sponsored events will be staged from Fri, Feb 4 to Sun, Feb 6. There will be a welcoming speech from the Mayor, kicking off a program that will include lion dancing and live music performances. Activities will be centred around Meekes Street and the area will be decorated with Chinese lanterns, with additional street furniture. Talks are being held with local restaurants about promoting their offerings and the council is open to other ideas for street stalls. It is hoped the event will help revive the Kingsford shopping strip, has been hit hard by the extended lockdown and a big drop in overseas student numbers at UNSW.

Favourable report card for water quality at most local beaches Good news for those swimming at local beaches this summer - the majority of beaches in the Randwick LGA have been graded as ‘Good’ or ‘Very Good’ in the state government’s latest State of the Beaches report.

The exception was Frenchmans Bay, which has been downgraded to a ‘Poor’ rating. But the water quality there has been improved since the government sampling by recent installation of a gross pollutant trap at the stormwater drain flowing into the bay. Gradings are based on an analysis of water samples taken throughout the previous year.

New rules for Airbnb hosts

Residential property owners in Randwick City seeking to rent out their home for short term bookings through platforms such as Airbnb and Stayz, must now register their property as well as comply with fire and safety requirements and a code of conduct. The new requirements are part of a state-wide regulatory framework for short-term rental accommodation (STRA) that commenced on Nov 1, 2021. The new framework permits homeowners to rent out their home for 365 days per year when the host is present and for 180 days a year if the host is not present. Property owners must comply with minimum fire safety standards, agree to a code of conduct which is enforceable by NSW Fair Trading and register their property on the NSW Planning Portal to help track day limits.

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone, Hope you are all keeping well as we head into the holiday season. 2021 has been a tumultuous year for all of us, and we continue to commend the strength and resilience of our community during what has been a frustrating and difficult year. Of course, in 2021 we have also been happy to witness our Australian athletes winning gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, our petition on comprehensive consent education being heard in Parliament, and NSW exceeding its vaccination targets almost every week, allowing us to spend time with our families, friends and loved ones again. One of the important issues that our community has been focused on this year is the proposed bus cuts in the Eastern Suburbs. Through the incredible response from members of the community, we have managed to save the 373 bus route from being cut. However, there is still work to be done as the NSW Government is still set to remove 24 services and at least 50 bus stops. It is critical that our public transport system remains convenient, fast and accessible for everyone, and to protect our buses from further privatisation. A community rally was held on Wed, Nov 24 at 1pm, in Martin Place outside Parliament House, to call on the Government to Save Our Buses. It was well-attended by members of the community. As you may be aware, our office is now a drop-off for CaringKids Christmas Toy Drive, who are helping bring joy to children caring for a family member with a disability. CaringKids is asking for new and unwrapped gifts for children aged 5-17 years, including toys, games, sports equipment and arts and craft. Donations may be dropped off at our office at 15/53-55b Frenchmans Road, Randwick.
