COMMUNITY WORRIED SICK ABOUT OVER DEVELOPMENT P4 WHAT'S ON BAYSIDE P5 The estimated world population in AD165 was about 200 million. Marcus Aurelius had been emperor for four years and Rome was still at its height. He was a stoic philosopher and the last of the Five Good Emperors.

The tsunami is expected to recede later in 2022 and people may even celebrate, but the immediate process of tidying up will continue until at least 2024 and there will be a lingering sadness during this time.

It was the year the Antonine Plague struck. At its peak 2,000 people per day died in Rome and it spread from Egypt to Germany. Of the people who caught it 25% died and it is estimated that 10% of the 75 million people in the Roman Empire never recovered.

Not only the world will have changed, but we will have changed. Typically, after a pandemic people return to religion and start looking for more meaning in life.

So much so, that writing after the event, Roman senator and historian Cassius Dio called the empire under Marcus “a kingdom of gold” that persevered admirably “amidst extraordinary difficulties.” Sociologist Nicholas Christakis believes that this ability of people to work together in times of difficulty is built into our DNA and that helping people even makes us feel happy. It developed over the thousands of years that we evolved as hunter-gatherers and is part of how we were able to survive and prosper even when surrounded by deadly predators.

All this may not be good news, but it is beginning to look as if Omicron may be the last major Covid mutation, so we can cautiously look forward to seeing light at the end of the tunnel (light that is not the headlights of a train). And, if you’re looking for even more good news, we assure you that this edition is brimming with it, including the delightful story of the “Unofficial Mayor of Edgecliff” (P7) and the story of one of the world’s youngest published authors and her book about “The Magic Ball of String”(P6). You can also see that the Woolltones Choir has a new musical director and can “Sing again”(P8), that the newly refurbished Woollahra Hotel has now reopened(P9) and that Flickerfest is back from Jan 21-30 with a “Dazzling array of short films”(P11).

His two recent books Apollo’s Arrow (The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live) and Blueprint (The Evolutionary Origins Of a Good Society) have impressed us so much that we are in the process of developing two online networks to make it easier for people who wish to work together to find each other and share information.

If you’re more focused on community news you can help celebrate the success of Randwick’s FOGO (Food Organics, Garden Organics) project reporting Green Bin up 95% and Red Bin content down 25% (P15 & P24). In the local elections Residents First celebrate a 10% swing in their favour(P4) and community group Nielsen Park Regulars celebrate 10 years of weekly meetings - (the first of a four part series)(P8).

There is one for those in business www.esbn.network and www.escn.network for those more concerned with community matters. People can, of course, join both.

We’re also pleased to announce the opening of two new stores on Oxford St, Bondi Junction - La Tienda and a new Salvation Army Store(P12).

Community "worried sick" about over development Residents First candidates are grateful to have received a more than 10% swing in their favour at the recent Woollahra Council local government elections and represent a third of all elected Councillors. “We are excited to be representing the community and advocating on their behalf on Council” said Councillor Luise Elsing of the Cooper Ward.

Residents First comprises independent Councillors not affiliated with a major political party. Their agenda includes upholding residents’ rights to maintain and improve the character and amenity of their local area. Issues relevant at the 2021 election included increased pressure on traffic and parking, and contests around the maintenance and use of public open green spaces - all of which have been aggravated by increased overdevelopment and density. Woollahra LGA has exceeded the State Government housing target for 2016 – 2021 (300 new dwellings) by about 300% and is on track to exceed the target set for 2021 - 2026 (500 new dwellings) by a further 300%. Notwithstanding current and future exceedance of State Government imposed new dwelling targets, Council has sought public consultation on the Edgecliff Planning

Proposal, high-rise to facilitate a further 1,200 new dwellings in the Edgecliff corridor.

Councillor Harriet Price (Paddington Ward) said “I will continue to work with the community to address their concerns. The proposed redevelopment of the Edgecliff corridor is a key issue next term and we are up for that challenge.” Residents in Bellevue Hill and Vaucluse were particularly concerned with 60% of the new dwellings in the LGA being absorbed in their suburbs. “The community wants us to focus on keeping our public areas, open spaces and beaches clean and well maintained given increased density pressures on these assets” noted Councillor Lucinda Regan (Bellevue Hill Ward). Newly elected Councillor Merrill Witt of the Vaucluse Ward said “residents are very worried about traffic and lack of parking near local services as well as changes to local character and loss of heritage caused by the increase in density in medium and low rise residential areas." Councillor Mark Silcocks (Double Bay Ward) was delighted with the swing towards Residents First in Double Bay noting that

L-R Councillors Mark Silcocks, Luise Elsing, Lucinda Regan and Harriet Price

“residents have had enough of over development and are worried sick that the proposed new high rise in Double Bay will result in overshadowing and wind tunnels destroying Double Bay’s local village atmosphere”.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA GEORGE FAIRFOWL MACARTHUR – PART 3 St Mark's glebe

In our Builders of Modern Australia series, describing the remarkable contribution of the people of St Mark’s, Darling Point, we reflect on the life of the Reverend George Macarthur, the first Rector of our permanent church. In the eight years of his incumbency at St Mark’s, Reverend George Macarthur, was to assist in the establishment of other churches in the Eastern Suburbs. Beyond travelling regularly to Vaucluse and Watson’s Bay, the burgeoning population required ministering and eventually founded their own local places of worship - Randwick and Waverley in particular (which had been separated in 1857 with the founding of St Jude’s), as the distances made it impossible for him to minister to his growing flock. One early St Mark’s parishioner, Simeon H Pearce, widely considered to be the founder of Randwick, was particularly active in the proclamation of the Municipality of Randwick, as an incorporated city in 1859, actually one year before Woollahra itself was incorporated. Pearce was a dynamic individual who was very skilled at land development and at getting his way with people of influence.

In a controversial transaction at the time, the parcel of land was granted to St Mark’s church in distant Darling Point, and was widely criticized as a very poor bargain at the time, because Randwick itself consisted of less than a dozen dwellings in 1857 and was mostly poor quality scrub and sand hills. Indeed, one of the trustees said the it would be 100 years before the useless land would be worth even 100 pounds!

Photo: Earlswood. Photo courtesy of https://www.realestate.com. au/sold/property-house-nswrandwick-126040578

He had arrived in the colony in 1842 at the age of 21 and had rapidly expanded his interests to become Commissioner for Crown Lands by 1850, appointed by Sir Edward Deas Thomson, the Colonial Secretary, and the most powerful public servant in the colony. As was the custom at this time St Mark’s was to be granted a glebe by the government which, as a grant of land, was intended to support the income of the church through productive means and usually consisted of an acre of land for a horse and a cow. St Mark’s glebe, probably through Pearce’s influence, consisted of 16 hectares of rough land in an area south of Frenchman’s’ Road running down to Alison Road and including St Mark’s Road, Dutruc Street, Rae Street and Wood Street and also including the current Fred Hollows Reserve (off Bligh Street) which was to be used as a quarry.

How wrong they were! When the glebe was sold off by the Church and subdivided in the 1880’s, only 25 years later, this land had become the Dress Circle of Randwick and many fine residences were constructed, many of which survive today. The strong demand for land in the area ensured the establishment of substantial homes for the well-to-do, all within the significant Late Victorian “boom period”, as are excellent examples such as Earlswood (pictured) and Venice. In a quaint irony, today such well positioned land would be valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars and yet poor Reverend George Macarthur was to leave the incumbency of St Mark’s to restore the fortunes of The King’s School in Parramatta, rather than continue to face the politics and vicissitudes of parish life.

Chelsea, who’s a student at Kincoppal, Vaucluse, was born to tell stories and narrates them to her mother, Irina, before going to sleep every night. She has always been in love with Russian fairytales which comforted her when at the age of four and a half, suffering from pneumonia, she was in hospital in Moscow for an extended period. It was during this difficult time that, influenced by those fairytales, she created the first version of The Magic Ball of String, telling it to her mother who wrote it down for her. Since then, the story has evolved through the normal editing process, which Chelsea was fully a part of, to become a fresh and charming tale of adventure, family love, the power of kindness, and the unexpected magic of a certain ball of string! With beautiful pictures by acclaimed international illustrator Olya Badulina, this book is one that children and families across Australia will take to their hearts.

The Unofficial Mayor of Edgecliff

If you regularly go to post office at Edgecliff Centre, you have probably met Will. I call him the unofficial Mayor of Edgecliff. Why would I call him that? Well, if you see him in action, you will know why.

If you don’t already know him, you would probably just think he’s just a regular run-ofthe-mill post office employee. How many of you go to the post office and get greeted by your name? Well for the local residents in Edgecliff, Will knows almost everyone by name. Not only that, he probably knows almost all your family members by name as well.

When I got to the counter I mentioned that my finger was bleeeding and asked if they had any band aids. The employee said they didn’t have any as they had run out. Leaving the post office, I used a tissue to stop the bleeding. Out the corner of my eye, Will was running towards me. Will said “here you go, I just bought you a band aid”. Will even helped me put the band aid on, I didn’t even realise, he had overheard my request at the post office counter. Who does that? Who goes out of their way especially whilst they are working to help a stranger? That was the start of my journey discovering an uncut diamond.

You are probably thinking, what’s so special about that and him? Will is special to me and almost everyone I know that goes into Edgecliff post office. It doesn’t matter to Will if you are young, old, rich or poor, he will still treat you with respect and will go above and beyond for you. He will even go the extra mile for a perfect stranger. Let me share my first encounter with Will.

A truly kind-hearted man, despite all the difficulties and circumstances he faced in the earlier years in life. He doesn’t complain about the past, but embraces all of his blessings with a thankful heart.

I had moved back into the Edgecliff area about seven years ago. A few things had changed whilst I was away but the post office was still there. Whilst lining up waiting to be served, I noticed my finger was bleeding, probably from a paper cut from a parcel I had taken out of my PO box earlier.

The moral of the story? Actions speak louder than words …. you never know how a small random act of kindness, can lead you to a lifelong friendship.

He is today a better man, a loving spouse and a doting father and more importantly a man God.

A tribute to the Nielsen Park Regulars - Part One A Tribute to the Nielsen Park Regulars is a small book written by Bruce Bland as a thank you to the local community that has continuosly met at NP for over 10 years. This is the first of a four parts.

THE OBJECT OF THIS BOOK

I put this book together for many reasons, but the main reason is to say “Thank You” to all of you, the Nielsen Park Regulars, for your contribution to our little local community since we started, over more than a decade ago. At the beginning, I didn’t fully understand the scope and importance of the benefits such a local community would bring to us all. I have always been voluntarily involved in a variety of local communities because I believe that they can solve local issues. And if all local communities ‘worked’ then there wouldn’t be any national issues to resolve... and national issues seem (to me) to be much more complicated/difficult to solve. However, the benefits of the NPRs as a local community, and the importance of those benefits, are different from those I initially envisaged. Further, over the last couple of (COVID-19 pandemic) years, these benefits have become more important to us. As we grow older, retire or semi-retire and are ‘less engaged’, our needs, friends and activities change, and I think our NPRs

community, un-incorporated and informal as it is, offers us all lots of the ‘things’ that we need in order to stay healthier and be happier, and so live longer more fulfilled lives. Some of these ‘things’ are: informal as it is, offers us all lots of the ‘things’ that we need in order to stay healthier and be happier, and so live longer more fulfilled lives. • We meet in a well-managed, pristine “paradise” environment in the middle of a busy five million people city... even unconsciously this beautiful location must ‘refresh’ our spirit every day... • For over eight months of the year the weather is beautiful and contributes to the pleasantness of our visit.

• The facilities are simple, but perfectly cater for our needs. • Amongst our 100 strong eclectic group it is easy to find those with whom we can happily share our time and ideas. • Swimming, each to their own regime, is a wonderfully, non-violent exercise, which is beneficial to each of us individually, both physically and mentally. • We are well supported by our elected officials Local, State and Federal, (particularly Mayor, Susan Wynne.) • The daily social interaction, which is so important at this stage of our lives, is easy, happy, and good for our mental health. • The small functions (“bubbles & bites”) give us an additional reason to celebrate happy occasions.

• The ‘jokes and friendly ribbing’ amongst many of us, contribute positively to the overall welcoming/happy atmosphere. • The lovely, friendly and service-oriented kiosk staff contribute enormously to making every visit, by each one of us, a pleasant one. • The fact that each one of us knows that, if necessary, in times of difficulties, the NPR’s ‘have your back’, is reassuring for us all. All these ‘lovely pleasant things’ don’t just happen because a bunch of very different people happen to gather together.

They happen because we all make the necessary effort. Although individually, each one of these ‘pleasant things’ that we, as NPRs, share and benefit from each morning, may not seem much. But when you put them all together, they add up to the...“Dr. Nielsen effect,”…. which translated, means ‘a perfect recipe for a longer, happier, healthier life.’ Bruce Bland Unelected & Self-Promoted Coordinator The Nielsen Park Regulars

PEP-11 IS DEAD IN THE WATER

Woollahra Hotel officially re-opens

The iconic Woollahra Hotel has opened it's doors after undergoing a significant refurbishment. The reimagination of the space introduces new culinary experiences while honouring its historical roots to welcome back the local community of Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.

DAVE SHARMA FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH

After a two-year struggle, working alongside some local community groups and concerned citizens, the offshore oil-and-gas licence covering the coastal waters off Sydney, PEP-11, has been terminated by the Federal Government.

This is a massive win for our community, and for all those who care for the health of our oceans. In this part of Sydney, we are fortunate to be custodians of some of the world’s most pristine coastline, with beaches and bays that people travel from around the world to visit. The PEP-11 licence posed a threat to this. It allowed oil and gas companies to drill for fossil fuels off a 4,500 kilometre stretch of our coastline, all the way from Newcastle to Manly. This area is one of the most densely populated and trafficked strips of ocean in the world. It’s also one of the most beautiful and most iconic. If you live here, take the ferry to work, volunteer at one of our surf clubs, take the

kids to Nippers, have a swim or a surf in the morning or at the end of the day, or regularly do one of our amazing coastal walks like the Bondi to Bronte or Hermitage Foreshore walk, then you had a stake in stopping PEP-11. In October 2020, I moved a motion calling for the end of PEP-11 in Parliament. I have since spoken against it a number of times in the Parliament, and expressed my opposition directly to the Prime Minister and other senior Ministers. Working closely alongside my coastal Liberal colleagues, particularly Lucy Wicks and Jason Falinski, we advocated loudly and persistently for the Government to reject the licence renewal application and terminate the project. Our success with this campaign is due in no small part to the high level of community engagement, from all of you who care about the health of our oceans and our planet. Thank you – we could not have achieved this without you.

At the forefront of the ground floor rework is the hotel’s Front Bar, a space dedicated to championing the classic pub experience. The newly renovated space has reinstated the famous locals front bar and is the perfect spot for casual day to night drinking and dining. Due to its central corner block location, it also offers a convenient meeting place following a show in The Entertainment Quarter or after catching a game at The Sydney Cricket Ground or Moore Park. The reimagined Front Bar is an ideal spot to catch up with friends, or to enjoy a drink whilst watching the neighbourhood go by. Joining the Woollahra Hotel team is chef Jordan Muhamad (Rock Pool, Spice Temple, Chin Chin) who has led the redesign of the food offering Upstairs at the Woollahra Hotel incorporating the outdoor Terrace, Main Bar and Function spaces. Jordan also has the responsibility for the newly renovated ground floor offering. Broadening the culinary offering, patrons can experiment with the contemporary pub menu with an Asian Influence. Bolstering the best from Jordan and his experienced team’s Asian culinary experience, highlight dishes include the Steamed Snapper fillet, his selection of house made curries and the Hiramasa Kingfish sashimi.

Completing the Woollahra Hotel’s offering and having also undergone a full refurbishment is the iconic Bistro Moncur, led by experienced Head Chef Mark Williamson and his established team, one of Sydney’s premiere restaurants with roots in traditional, French bistro fine dining. Diners can enjoy classic favourites including Barossa chicken pâté, grilled sirloin and the saffron crab omelette or experiment with seasonal specials. Paired with an array of boutique and international wines along with signature cocktails, it’s the ideal spot to relax and enjoy a refined dining experience in the heart of Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. The hotel’s redesign has taken a thoughtful approach to preserving the original Art Deco architecture and more recent European modernism adaptations to celebrate the historical value while adding a contemporary twist. The Woollahra Hotel continues to hero the history and legacy of the venue following the refurbishment, whilst returning the Eastern Suburb’s most iconic hotel to the locals. With a variety of bookable spaces within the venue across Upstairs at Woollahra Hotel and Bistro Moncur, the Woollahra Hotel offers the perfect location for larger corporate events, birthdays, engagement parties or even your next casual catch up with friends.

Walkabout

In this Ed 37, I walk down the rest of Edgecliff Rd, the last part of my two part series. Suprisingly, I found a lot of hidden history in the backstreets. I begin my walk at Harbourview Park, a small park surrounded by Victorian and modern houses.

1

Harbourview Park was established as a result of an agreement undertaken on Oct 15, 1900 between Woollahra Council and Edward Knox Harkness. The land on which the park is now established was originally part of the Cooper Estate, which belonged to the Cooper Family of whom Sir Daniel Cooper (1821-1902) of Woollahra House was the head. Cooper sold it and surrounding land to Edward Knox Harkness. Harkness was a local land developer and builder who was responsible for (among other projects in the Municipality) developing the land around Bathurst St, Edgecliff Rd, Magney St, Harkness St, Russell St and Edward St.

Across the road is The Sephardi Synagogue, it was consecrated in 1962 and is the oldest Sephardi house of prayer in Australia. It was established by the NSW Association of Sephardim, an organisation that functions as an advocate for Jews in Australia of Spanish, Middle Eastern North African and Asian backgrounds, promoting the observance of Sephardi liturgy and the preservation of time-honoured traditions, as a constituent of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. In its early years, the Association was particular active in assisting Sephardim wishing to migrate to Australia. Next to the Synagogue is Holy Cross College Primary School which was once Fletcher's Iron Works. They made the 'Younger' stove and iron railings from 1870 to 1950. It was demolished in 1952. Holy Cross College, was established on the site of the Waverley Brewery in 1908, erecting the substantial Federation Romanesque structure and duplicating the western end around 1918.

5

I walk down Edgecliff Road and turn into Adelaide St to the Holy Cross Church. This Roman Catholic Church was built in 1907 and enlarged twice. The present church (Austin Mackay) was opened in 1940, is of Art Deco style with Romanesque windows and prominent stained glass depicting the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Walking down Fletcher St situated at the corner of Small St and Fletcher St, there is a sandstone house on the corner. A plaque marks the shelling from the Japanese submarine attack in WW11. Shrapnel exploded here and created a small crater over a wide area causing damage to houses in Small St.

Wear a mask, distance and keep up-to-date with the ever changing news about the virus. Have a healthy happy new year. May 2022 be a better year. Take care. Stay safe. If you need any advice or decisions to make please don't hesitate to phone Ruth Marks 0414 273 104.

She looks free and unencumbered by worries or concerns. This relates to the starting of a new cycle. THE GODDESS is disciplined and responsible.

Walking down Edgecliff Road towards Bondi Junction passing Grosvenor St I turn into Rowe St, which backs onto Syd Einfeld Drive overpass. I pass a house that has made a very significant impact on Sydney's senior Jewish community lives.

Hi Everyone, Omricon is spreading fast, but we can still go out ...be mindful and get tested if you have any symptoms.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 -Jan 19) THE WORLD is the Tarot card for CAPRICORN. This card shows a Goddess encircled by a wreath of leaves and fruits.

As a result of the agreement, Harkness sold a number of lots of land to Council. This land, in addition to some other pieces of land originally dedicated as roadway and easements was used to form Harbourview Park. I continue my walk down Russell St and right into Edward St, passing Harkness Estate Victorian houses then walk up steep Bathurst St, then left into Fletcher St.

Talking and teaching Tarot

This house is the home of COA. COA is an organisation created by Jewish seniors, for the benefit of Jewish seniors, with services delivered by Jewish seniors. It started as a purely volunteer organisation. Within the first decade COA had developed a number of services in direct response to member needs, and had taken on five staff members to handle the administration required to run these services to government specifications. COA runs with 160 active volunteers, aided by 15 staff members - the majority of whom are part time. Across the road is Jewish Folk Centre, which also offers social and cultural events for members of the Sydney community who are from Israeli origin. The next Edition 38, February, my walk takes you to the streets around Centennial Park, pointing out magnificent mansions of the rich and famous.

There will be personal growth and transformation ahead. She is ambitious and organised. She is ruled by the Planet Saturn. She can also be stern and judgemental. Achievement is in her blood. Many Capricorns start with nothing and grow to great heights. You are guaranteed success if you perservere. Most important that you make time for play. If you are feeling tired or in a rut or emotionally drained plan a trip. Travel will inspire you, you must take time for play. Lucky Gemstone: Diamond Lucky Number: 9 Lucky Colours: Brown and Green AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 19) THE STAR is the Tarot Card for AQUARIUS This Card shows a Goddess kneeling with one foot in a pool of swirling water where she is watering flowers which are beginning to bloom. This means growth on the horizon. She has a cosmic balance which indicates balance within. THE STAR is a very lucky card but does suggest you stick to one thing at a time and finish a job properly. It is important to pace yourself, this will give you better results. If you put your energy into one thing at a time you will be very successful. You are always ahead of time. You have inspiration in yourself so use it properly. This will enable you to have a successful year. If you can you must enjoy the waters and beaches around you as water inspires you. DAZZLING ARRAY OF SHORT FILMS AT FLICKERFEST

Flickerfest returns to Bondi Beach on Friday January 21, screening more than 200 of the world’s best short films over ten days.

Australian feature director Alex Proyas (‘Dark City,’ ‘I, Robot’). International entries include the heart-warming film ‘Roy’ from the UK, where a reclusive widower passes his days cold-calling strangers until a chance meeting with a young women sees an unlikely friendship forged. It stars David Bradbury of Harry Potter fame and Oscar winner Rachel Shenton (‘The Silent Child,’ ‘Hollyoaks’). From Canada, there’s the animation ‘The Shaman’s Apprentice’ by First Nations director Zacharious Kunuk. It’s about a young Shaman facing her first test.

The upcoming event showcases some of the most innovative, provocative and entertaining short films produced around the globe over the past 12 months, handpicked from the festival’s record 3200 entries. This year’s program includes productions from a number of Eastern Suburbs directors such as Eddy Bell, whose 15-minute film ‘Giants’ is set against the backdrop of the worst drought in Australia’s recent history. ‘Giants’ came about when Bondi-based Eddy and his crew were filming a polo event in north western NSW. But the polo production was eclipsed by the idea of making a film about the ravages of the drought. “We met farmers who were praying for rain, only to have their spirits crushed,” said 38-year-old Eddy. “So what we did was put together a team of actors to play a farming family and we kept going back there over the course of two years, using extras from the local community.” Nash Edgerton is another Eastern Suburbs director in the Flickerfest program. An accomplished actor and director (‘Mr Inbetween’) who loves to make short films, Nash stars in ‘Shark’ alongside Rose Byrne. The sequel to a pair of previous films,

Evening screenings are held in the seated open air lawn cinema and daytime sessions take place in the Spiegeltent indoor cinema. If the weather is inclement, the Spiegeltent will also be used for evening screenings. There’s an outdoor bar plus food stalls. Photo: Rose Byrne and Nash Edgerton in ‘Shark.’ ‘Bear’ and ‘Spider,’ previously screened at Flickerfest, it’s about a prankster with a history of failed relationships. But now things appear to be looking up as he meets Rosie. Or are they? “I thought it would be interesting to see what happens if he meets someone who is also a prankster,” said Nash, who made the film with producer Michele Bennett of ‘Chopper’ fame. Watch out for fast-paced action in

and on the ocean, using locations in Sydney and Lord Howe Island. Other highlights from the Flickerfest program include the world premiere of the quirky space comedy ‘The Home Team’ starring comedian/TV presenter Paul McDermott and acclaimed actress Tara Morice (‘Strictly Ballroom’). And there’s ‘Mask of the Evil Apparition’ from award-winning

It’s a COVID-safe event run in conjunction with Waverley Council. The festival culminates with an awards presentation held under the summer stars celebrating the festival’s standout films. Following the Bondi event, a selection of films will go on tour to capital cities and regional centres around Australia. For ticket information, go to www.flickerfest.com.au Tony Maguire

Little shop of treasures opens in Bondi Junction Venture down Oxford St, Bondi Junction and you will find a bespoke shop of treasures called La Tienda… Inside you will find Asian cabinets, furniture, mirrors, artefacts, jewellery, decorative items, original paintings and crafts.

One of the most interesting pieces I came across in La Tienda was a painting titled 'Stolen Generation' by artist Daniel Goodwin(Jinta Jinta) who was taken from his family at Ernabella, South Australia in 1947.

Daniel won an award as best Indigenous painter in 1996 and Ochre Award in 1991. 'Glimpses of Lake Illawarra'. is a beautiful series of paintings by Jules McCue.

"To capture the essence of something is an objective of my work. There are no rules or limitations except that at the end of the 19th century, widespread use of the camera, released the creative artist from having to copy nature or reality, opening up an era of extreme creativity and a sensuous and visual exploration through imagination and experimentation; the results, many and varied, might dig into the unconscious, the soul or the unknown and at times, the ineffable.

The painting represents the history of the stolen generation depicting the children as birds. Daniel was five when he was placed in a home for aboriginal chidren in Port Augusta, South Australia and he stayed there until he was 16. He was punished because he could not understand much english. At 17 worked Daniel worked in a sheep station and it wasn't until then that he started looking for his family. He had no idea he came from the Pitjantjatjara tribe, and had to get initiated into the tribe to find out more information about his roots... Daniel was 21 when he was reunited with him mother.

La Tienda has carefully sourced the finest art and furniture in one beautiful shop of treasures in Bondi Junction, so you can furnish your abode tastefully. Ruth Kliman

WAYS OOSH

Learn, Create, Inspire, Excite

Since 2018, the WAYS OOSH program has evolved from being a small community After School Care into a fully certified After School Care and Vacation Care program.

The goal of WAYS OOSH is for children to learn, create, be inspired and to get excited by the range of experiences we offer. WAYS OOSH runs 5 days-a-week from 3pm - 7pm and offers a variety of in house or excursion activities that utilise the local fitness centres and community members in the Bondi area. WAYS OOSH offers yoga, surfing, cooking, music lessons, homework help and the very successful skateboard lessons all led by highly trained professionals, who abide by health and safety regulations. “Our vision is always to provide fun, dynamic and professionally led programs for our community of children and parents” CEO Dr Terri Said. Newly appointed OOSH Coordinator Samantha Carroll has been a local of Bondi for the past 47 years and has worked for over 30 OOSH centres in the area. She believes that WAYS has so much potential to grow into a multiple room and zone OOSH as the offer is very different to other OOSH centres that she has worked for. “WAYS OOSH is different from other centres as we can change and adapt new activities that the community demands. We’re able

to achieve this as we have warm and professional staff who know how to engage children and we also have all the right contacts who provide us with activities that children love. After lockdown, the demand is very high, as there are a lot of working families that need OOSH, and WAYS wants to provide the perfect offer for these families.” The Vacation Care program is an exciting excursion-based program offering a variety of activities like Jamberoo, Cables Aqua Park, VR Centres, Go- Karting, Art and Craft workshops, which regularly reach maximum capacity each vacation period.

A misconception regarding WAYS is that it was known only as a youth centre for delinquent teens. While WAYS will always offer an open-door policy for all youth in need; the last 5-10 years WAYS has begun to change the perception as the demand from the community is to move more towards a holistic approach to youth and family services. WAYS offers a range of innovative services that include an alternative high school – WAYS Secondary for students with mild to moderate anxiety and depression, Youth Training which offers a range of VET courses, a family and adolescent Wellness Centre and drop in, all of which cater to the diverse needs of our community. If you would like to learn more about WAYS, please visit their website www.ways.org.au

FOGO LIKE A PRO THIS SUMMER With the summer holidays now in full swing and warmer weather finally here, there are ways to ensure your FOGO caddy and bin are kept free from flies, bugs, and smells.

Our top tips to FOGO like a pro this summer: 1.FREEZE IT. If you enjoy ham or prawns over Christmas, you can avoid a pongy bin by wrapping up your meat scraps and shells in a bag and freeze them. You can place them in the FOGO bin the night before collection and that way your bin won’t smell. 2. COOL IT. If you can, keep your FOGO bin in the shade between collections, that way it will reduce the chances of your recycling smelling. Also, on collection days when you leave your FOGO bin on the curb place it in the shade from a tree or a building if possible. 3. COVER IT. To avoid flies and bugs breeding in your food scraps close your caddy bin tightly after every use. For extra protection to stop flies laying eggs on food scraps cover them with paper, paper napkins, or cardboard

POST LOCKDOWN LIFE

Randwick considers foil boarding ban

Photo: Hadija Saidi on Unsplash

As the NSW lockdown restrictions continue to ease, I am reflecting on life post lockdown. In reality, we are not post pandemic; Covid-19 is very much still with us. What has changed is our attitude and coping mechanisms to help handle the virus. But how has your lockdown experience changed you? Some people will continue with life as they lived it pre-lockdown. Others have had time to slow down, to think, to ponder life, and perhaps to sit with themselves in a way that they may not have sat with themselves before. Sitting with ourselves can be very difficult. ‘Normal’ life is so busy that we simply don’t sit with ourselves often. And then suddenly we had less distractions and reasons to leave the house. So, what did you learn about yourself during your lockdown? Did you get to know yourself better? The good and the bad?! Has Covid-19 seen you re-evaluate what is important to you?

If you have found that there are patterns of thought, behaviours or habits you feel no longer benefit you and wish to get some help, hypnotherapy can be highly effective over a relatively short period of time (generally four sessions). Hypnotherapy can be effective for many day-to-day issues we experience during our life, such as panic, anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, anger, insomnia, childhood issues and trauma. You may have seen them at Maroubra and other eastern beaches – surfers riding boards that seemingly defy gravity as they hover above the water surface. Welcome to foil boarding, which is bringing a new and exciting dimension to surfing. However, the aerodynamic hydrofoils beneath the boards can be extremely dangerous, which is why Randwick City Council is considering banning the new boards. The latest meeting of Randwick’s Coastal Advisory Committee agreed to investigate “either a partial or complete ban of foil boarding” following serious accidents in other parts of Australia and overseas.

control,” he said. “I’m just using mine on places out on the ocean where there’s no surf or other boardriders.” The longer, winged fin on a foil board deflects water pressure downward. It lifts board and rider above the surface, lending greater speed, along with the ability to surf on flat water. Unfortunately, the elaborate rig beneath the board can also act as a kind of ocean-going gallows. Just ask Japanese surfer Yu Tonbi Sumitomo (pictured below). He was nearly decapitated by the fin of a foil board. Admittedly, it was his own newly-purchased foil board that inflicted the injury. He was learning to use it at a quiet but dangerous Japanese surf break.

It is working with Surfing NSW to gather feedback from boardriders’ clubs. “Once we have this, we'll present a report to Council,” a spokesperson told Eastern Suburbs Life. The Coastal Advisory Committee floated the following options: • A total foil boarding ban; • Allowing it “during the times when the beach is not patrolled by the RCC beach lifeguards;” • Introducing regulations requiring foil boarders “to keep to a minimum of 60 metres from all other persons and non-powered vessels;” • Erecting signage stating that “persons engaged in recreational activities undertaken outside of the designated patrol hours do so at their own risk.” Danny Donohoe, President of Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club, believes a complete ban would be somewhat heavy-handed. “There haven’t been any accidents locally that I’m aware of,” he told Eastern Suburbs Life. “The lifeguards don’t let it happen when the flags are up, so it’s being restricted to early in the morning or late in the afternoon.” A different perspective came from Robert Bruns, President of Bronte Boardriders. “I actually have one, but they’re super-dangerous and hard to

Closer to home, Channel 9 presenter Allison Langdon suffered a bad leg injury last year when she came off a foil board while filming a segment for the Today show in Queensland. She was rushed to a Gold Coast hospital, where she underwent knee surgery. Foil boards are not cheap, with price tags starting at around $1000. There is also a motorised version costing $12,000plus. An electric engine powers a propeller that increases speeds to 30km/h. The propeller may also increase the risk – Caribbean pro surfer William Aliotti had two fingers chewed up by the prop of his electric foil board when he came off it. A surgical team managed to save the fingers, but judging by pictures published on the web, Aliotti will not be carving out an alternative career as a hand model. Tony Maguire

Experience the technologies keeping Holocaust survivor stories alive

When it comes to learning about history, nothing quite compares to having an intimate conversation with the people who were there to experience it. This is why meeting Holocaust survivors and hearing their stories has always has been one of the most meaningful experiences offered by the Sydney Jewish Museum. Sadly, the Museum is having to prepare for a time when it no longer has survivors left to share their stories. Technology is critical to this plan, offering a way for future visitors to have authentic and meaningful interactions with important eyewitnesses to history.

This summer, there are several ways to engage with history through technology at the Museum: you can explore the Holocaust exhibition using a GPS-based testimony app, or even have a conversation with a Holocaust survivor via a new lifelike interactive technology.

MEET OLGA’S INTERACTIVE BIOGRAPHY

Olga Horak is one of six Sydney-based Holocaust survivors whose life stories are being brought to life as part of Dimensions in Testimony (DiT), in collaboration with USC Shoah Foundation. Over an intensive five days in December 2020, Olga answered around 1,000 questions about her experiences in the Holocaust, her life, her interests, and hopes for the future, while being filmed within a specialised rig with 23 cameras. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and next-generation language

processing, the many hours of footage from these interviews have been transformed by the Museum into an interactive biography capable of having a lifelike conversation. This means you can talk to it and see it reply as though the real Olga is actually sitting right in front of you, sharing her stories of history and survival. Visitors will have the chance to ask a question and watch as Olga’s interactive biography replies in real-time. What have you always wanted to ask a Holocaust survivor? Now’s your chance to ask Olga. When? Check the website for session times.

BE GUIDED BY THE VOICES OF HISTORY

Listen to the voices of history on your own device as you move through the Sydney Jewish Museum’s Holocaust exhibition, with the SJM Voices app. This custom curated app draws on a rich repository of survivor testimony, stories from perpetrators, witnesses, and experts, to deliver a personal and multi-perspective insight into this turbulent period of history. When? Any time you visit. Visit www.sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au for session times, and to learn more about how the Sydney Jewish Museum is using technology to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors.

NEW BOARDWALK COMPLETES THE LOOP AROUND RANDWICK ENVIRONMENT PARK Just in time for summer, the new boardwalk at Randwick Environment Park is complete and open for public use. The boardwalk, which was built in place of the dilapidated dirt track on the western edge of the park, completes the 1.2km loop around the park, making the walk fully accessible to all.

“Whether you’re a parent pushing a stroller, you’re in a wheelchair or a mobility scooter, everyone should have access to this beautiful green space in the middle of Randwick,” says Dylan Parker, Mayor of Randwick. The new section of the track is comprised of a 73m long deco granite path as well as a 166m long raised boardwalk through the trees. Randwick staff worked hard to ensure there was minimal impact on the beautiful natural surroundings of the park during the construction period. The boardwalk utilised environmentally friendly footings as part of the design upgrade, which will provide the least amount of soil disturbance and will be made from fibre-reinforced plastic, which contains 90% recycled material. The path has been elevated to allow for fauna and flora to pass underneath it. “The addition of this boardwalk means every resident has access to the beauty of the ephemeral wetlands, the amazing

birdlife and the flora and fauna within Randwick Environment Park,” says Mayor Parker. Randwick Environment Park is a beautiful location that is popular place for families. It is home to Randwick City Council’s Community Centre and Outdoor Classroom. The park has also played host to Council’s Twilight Concert Series as well as the Nox Night Sculpture Walk. The addition of the new boardwalk will enhance the use and accessibility for all.

A development application is being lodged for plans to convert the empty residence to a facility that will house four artist studios including an accessible studio, performance and exhibition spaces and a pocket park for the local community. Construction is due to commence in 2023. “It’s an exciting time to be an artist in Randwick City, particularly as plans progress to open up this under-utilised space to the community,” says Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker. “The house is behind a fence and hidden from view but it’s time now to maximise the potential of the building and create a place for everyone to enjoy. “Our vision is for Blenheim House to become a place where art is created and enjoyed. We’re hoping it will be used as a public space for community art exhibitions, performances, workshops and other cultural events.” The plans have been developed in response to Randwick Council’s recently-adopted Arts and Culture Strategy, which aims to increase the number of places that are available for people to participate in arts and culture. Once completed, the studios will be offered through an Expression of Interest application program that will be open to local artists and will be available on a short-term to longer-term affordable lease basis.

Marjorie O'Neill MP

MEMBER FOR COOGEE Happy New Year! I hope everyone feels rested from the break, and spent quality time with friends and family. I want to thank all the essential workers, from those working in hospitality, to hospitals, who spent the break looking out for the community. As many of us head back into work or school, here are some of the key issues I will be diving into in the coming months. In December the NSW Government cut 24 bus routes and at least 50 bus stops in the Eastern Suburbs. This came after a huge two-year community campaign opposing these cuts. My office has received an outpouring of responses from residents affected. Many have informed my office that they no longer have a viable commute to work, or of increased walking distances, as such that they no longer feel safe taking public transport at night. Parents of school-aged children have informed me that their kids now have no adequate public transport options to get to school. Many who heavily rely on our public transport, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and those who can’t drive, have suddenly been cut off from their regular destinations. The most vulnerable members of the community have been the most harmed from these cuts. We have referred the Government’s cuts and planned privatisation of our local buses to a NSW Upper House committee for inquiry. The community deserves to know the real justification for the cuts, and how much public feedback was ignored. A huge thank you to everyone who contacted my office to share their experience and the bus routes they want reinstated. I also encourage you to scan the QR code and sign this e-Petition for the fair funding of our public schools. The petition, supported by Parents & Citizens Associations across the Eastern Suburbs, aims to bring to the attention of Parliament the Government’s deliberate underfunding of our public schools.

Located at 17 Blenheim Street, Randwick, the two-storey sandstone house was built by the first Mayor of Randwick, Simeon Pearce, in 1848.

New boardwalk

Just in time for summer, the new boardwalk at Randwick Environment Park is complete and open for public use. The boardwalk, which was built in place of the dilapidated dirt track on the western edge of the park, completes the 1.2km loop around the park, making the walk fully accessible to all. “Whether you’re a parent pushing a stroller, you’re in a wheelchair or a mobility scooter, everyone should have access to this beautiful green space in the middle of Randwick,” says Mayor Dylan Parker. The boardwalk utilised environmentally friendly footings as part of the design upgrade, which will provide the least amount of soil disturbance and will be made from fibre-reinforced plastic, which contains 90% recycled material.

More than $600 million per year that should go to public schools has been stripped away. This reflects the current NSW Government’s unconscionable approach to education. We have seen public schools being denied essential infrastructural upgrades, declining results and teacher shortages, and a growing dependence on P&C Associations to fund the basic needs of the schools. The petitioners call on the Government to fully fund our public schools in line with the original Gonski agreement. Our children’s futures depend on it. If you have any issues relating to the NSW Government, or you are not sure where to go to for help, please contact my office on (02) 9398 1822 or by emailing coogee@ parliament.nsw.gov.au
