AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Which makes us wonder how earlier generations handled their problems. About this time last century they were coping with 50 million deaths from Spanish flu, on top of 20 million deaths from WW1. All this when the population of the world was just over 2 billion. When Spanish flu ended in 1920, over 500 million people had been infected. The collapse of Wall Street came in 1929 and the Great Depression that followed didn’t end until 1933. Songs of the time included “Sunnyside of the Street”, “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” – In a nod to earlier generations, Shivonne Powers lists “Ten lessons my grandmother taught me”. They are: 1. Keep your mind open to possibilities and never turn something down. You never know what it might lead to.

COUNCILLOR SUSAN WYNNE

RE-ELECTED MAYOR Councillor Susan Wynne has been re-elected as the Mayor of Woollahra, and Councillor Isabelle Shapiro elected as Deputy Mayor at the first meeting of the new Council, which was held on Jan 5, with both terms to run until Sept 2023.

Woollahra Council welcomed four new Councillors and 11 returning Councillors at the Dec 2021 Local Government Election, with the Woollahra community electing the highest number of female Councillors in NSW, being 10 of the 15 Councillors. The result is more than double the female councillor representation - 31% - across councils in NSW since the last election in 2017.

“This role comes with great responsibility and I remain committed to working with our community in ensuring Woollahra is a wonderful place to live, work and visit.”

Craig Swift-McNair, Woollahra Council General Manager, congratulated all councillors on their election and praised the progressive result achieved. “I’d like to congratulate all of our newlyelected and returning Councillors, and also thank the previous Council for its contribution to the Woollahra community over the past four years,” Mr Swift-McNair said.

Female councillor representation at Woollahra has risen consistently in recent years, from three Councillors in 1995, six from 1999-2011, seven in 2012 and nine in 2017.

“We have a proud history as a progressive council, from our leadership on climate change, to our strong support of the arts and longstanding local disability and mental health initiatives, and 50% women on our executive team.

“It is an honour and privilege to continue serving Woollahra as Mayor. I am looking forward to working with Councillor Isabelle Shapiro as Deputy Mayor and all the Councillors,” Mayor Wynne said.

“This result is another significant achievement for Woollahra Council and a wonderful reflection of our community as a whole, as our elected representation is a clear indication of the progressive nature of Woollahra’s residents.

THE BUILDERS OF

MODERN AUSTRALIA JOHN HUBERT PLUNKETT – PART ONE

In our Builders of Modern Australia series, describing the remarkable contribution of the people of St Mark’s, Darling Point, we reflect on an important non-parishioner who has been honoured in our church. Part of the fun of being an historian is solving puzzles and working out historical connections. We have a window dedicated to Sara M Plunkett, John Hubert Plunkett and Robert H B Acheson which is one such puzzle.

This window was dedicated in 1915 and we believe it refers to Sara Martha Crook and her son, John Hubert Plunkett, from her marriage to William Edmond Plunkett (1826-94), who was a first cousin of the important Attorney General of NSW. That John Hubert Plunkett (1802-69) is described by Mark Tedeschi QC, author of Murder at Myall Creek as the man who “arguably achieved more for human rights in Australia than anyone else before or since”. It is quite surprising that this window should be in an Anglican church as we understand Sara’s husband was William Edward Plunkett, who was an active member of the Woollahra Catholic Church. We do know however that from 1893, Sara Plunkett was a pewholder at St Mark's for many years and we are hopeful that this family was quite ecumenical in its outlook, as we are at St Mark's. Certainly, there was a great deal of goodwill between the Christian denominations in the early days of the colony. Our knowledge of the more famous John Hubert Plunkett (1802-69) is that he was a great servant of NSW under Anglo-Irish Governor Richard Bourke, who was a liberal Anglican. Governor Bourke was a relative of Edmund Burke (1729-97) and was greatly influenced by the liberal philosophy of the famous philosopher/ statesman. As Irishmen, Bourke and Plunkett had both seen first-hand the effect of sectarian discriminatory policies and trade sanctions on a nation. They were each determined that the new colony would not reflect such values. Bolstered by the timely rise of Whig power at the Foreign Office and the arrival of Lord Glenelg as Colonial Secretary, in particular, the stage was set for this Governor who held strong personal views regarding the equality of all men before the law, including convicts, emancipists and Aborigines (to use the term current at that time), to make a real difference in the new colony. This philosophy had just been strengthened by the passing in the UK of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 which sought to eliminate slavery in the British Empire and the Reform Act 1832 which ushered in a new era of extended electoral franchise. Plunkett and fellow Irishman, Roger Therry were Catholic lawyers and were among the first of that denomination to be allowed to hold senior office in New South Wales. Indeed, the appointment of Plunkett, first as Solicitor General, and then

as Attorney General, was part of a fortunate confluence that helped frame and define Australia as a secular nation with no religion of state and fair laws that saw all men equal before the law, regardless of colour, creed or circumstance. In Australia, this was to pit them against very strong vested interests controlling the Legislative Council, and it was Governor Bourke and John Plunkett together who displayed amazing political dexterity and skill to combat the vested interests seeking to perpetuate the English class system and suppression of minorities in the new colony. Next month, we will look at the most significant reforms that Plunkett was largely responsible for implementing. This will include the introduction of the notion of terra nullius as a strategy to protect the Aborigines of Port Phillip from unscrupulous land ‘purchases’ (despite the misuse of this term in subsequent history). Watsons bay and the surrounding coves and beaches have a long maritime history and were also a very fertile hunting and fishing area for local indigenous people before European settlement. The area was known as Kutti by the local Gadigal people. As the bay is sheltered from North, East and Southerly winds it was also, and still is a popular spot to anchor ships in rough weather after entering Port Jackson. This was especially true in the 18th century before a harbour pilot was stationed here and when charts were very rare and captains needed a quick and safe anchorage after coming into the unknown harbour. There was a signals station set up and from as early as 1790 was used as a fishery base to support the fledgling Sydney colony. By the early 19th century the area was bustling with all sorts of maritime trades and craft. The pilots who used to steer ships safely into the harbour were also mostly based here. These pilots were all vying for work and whoever could get out to the ship the fastest usually got the job. This was start of a great yacht racing tradition that still lives to this day. Local shipwrights and fisherman involved themselves in the construction and repairs of small timber vessels using local timbers such as Spotted Gum, Tallowwood, Swamp Mahogany and Hoop Pine to provide craft for this new fleet too. Watsons Bay was also the home of the original Sydney Harbour rescue lifeboat which would be rowed out by brave local volunteers to rescue people from ship wrecks on the coast in the most appalling conditions with many of these volunteer rescuers also losing their lives in the process. The life boats were launched from a slipway and rowed by 8-14 men depending on the conditions and size of ship needing rescue. These were large open rowing boats with the most basic of buoyancy and whilst sturdy they relied upon the skill, strength and tenacity of the men rowing them to get the job done. Most of the volunteers were local sailors or fishermen themselves and knew

how harrowing a ship wreck on coastal cliffs could be. These hardened and professional seamen considered it their sworn duty to go to the assistance other mariners in their time of need as they themselves might also need this same assistance in the future. It was never hard to find willing men even in the most ferocious of storms. As time went on the fishing community grew and hard working locals like the well known Smith brothers and Doyles family quickly grew the economy and made a name for the area not only as a fishing village but also a tourist destination. The first Doyles tea shop was opened in late 1880. Although none of the original building survives, some of the 1908 building is still standing and forms part of the current beachside restaurant. The timber ferries, Bee and Fairy Queen used to bring picnicing tourists to area which helped cement the area as a popular destination for day trips and sightseeing from South head. Watsons Bay was said to be so teeming with fish that locals would set their nets off a pier, come back a few hours later and they would be full to the brim with all sorts of fish. Sharks heavily populated the area too and many a childs favourite game after school or work was to run down to the end of the nearest jetty and throw stones at their fins as they swam past. Although still used by a few commercial fishermen such as the Doyles family right up until the 1980’s, Watsons Bay was becoming redundant as a fishery as early as the mid 19th century as the bigger ships required by a growing colony needed somewhere closer to the new settlement of Sydney to offload their larger cargoes and resupply. This was the start of change for the bay and farming and agriculture started to overtake the maritime economy. Today whilst the pilots and fishermen have gone there are still three local yacht and fishing clubs as well as the beachside and wharf Doyles Restaurants carrying on this maritime traditional. But the online world is not without its dangers, and in recent years we have grown more familiar with the risks and potential harm of the online world. In many respects the dangers from the online world can be just as significant as those in the physical world, whilst the ubiquity of digital technology makes them harder to guard against. This is especially true for young children, whose lives are particularly integrated with the digital world. As the father of three daughters, I share the concern of many parents to protect my daughters from the harm that can occur online. But these sorts of dangers can be hard for parents to see or detect, never mind to act against.

Our clinics are located in Edgecliff, Bella Vista, and a visiting clinic in Penrith. We have a sister clinic in Campbelltown. Edgecliff Hearing combines leading-edge hearing technology and hearing rehabilitation practice. Our audiologists are discreet, caring experts with the highest ethical standards, and are backed by friendly and efficient support staff.

In many respects digital resources and the online world have been of great benefit to Australians. They have allowed us to find and access information more readily, conduct business remotely, stay in touch with family and friends over long distances, and – as we saw during the pandemic – even enabled us to do work and schooling from home.

**QUOTE EASTERN SUBURBS LIFE NEWSPAPERS**

It is clear that in many respects, our laws and our behavioural norms have failed to keep pace with our lives in this space. We are now addressing that, and taking steps to ensure that our laws keep pace with advances in technology and the threats that can emerge online from harmful behaviour and toxic content. Last year I helped pass through Parliament the Online Safety Act 2021, which has just come into effect. This Act makes online service providers, like Facebook, Google, YouTube and TikTok, more accountable for the online safety of the people who use their service. The Act gives substantial new powers to Australia’s eSafety Commissioner to protect Australians across most online platforms

and forums where people can experience harm or abuse. It strengthens the cyberbulling scheme for Australian children. Under this scheme, the eSafety Commissioner can order online service providers to remove abusive and bullying content from all online services, with the online service provider having 24 hours to respond. The Act also creates a world-first adult cyber abuse scheme, where Australians subject to serious online harm can complain if online service providers fail to remove abusive content. The Act updates the Image-Based Abuse scheme, shortening the time online service providers have to take down intimate images, including videos, to 24 hours after a removal notice is received. The eSafety Commissioner can now also direct internet service providers to block access to certain material that promotes or instructs or depicts abhorrent violent conduct, such as terrorism or sexual assault. These are all important changes, but it’s only a start. I’m currently sitting on a Parliamentary committee inquiring into social media and online safety. We’ve already heard from a number of individuals who have had their lives irreparably damaged by online abuse and bullying, and we are looking at recommending steps – including the unmasking of anonymous troll accounts – to address this. These are issues the entire world is grappling with, but I’m pleased that Australia is leading the way. For too long the digital realm has been the wild and ungoverned west. It’s time we demand and require the same standards in this world as we have come to expect in our regular lives.

A TRIBUTE TO THE

NIELSEN PARK REGULARS - PART TWO

UNLOCK YOUR CHILD'S POTENTIAL Over the last 10-15 years we have built a wonderful local community group in the Woollahra Local Government Area, which we named: “The Nielsen Park Regulars”. The group has approximately 100 local residents, mainly seniors, who swim, early to mid-morning, summer and (many in) winter at the beautiful Nielsen Park swimming enclosure at Shark Beach.

that period. I have, all my life, been an early riser and active in the early morning. When I previously worked in Sydney, I used to jog then swim at Bondi Beach. When Philippe was a baby (41 years ago) I used to jog, pushing him in a pusher along the concrete promenade, and then catch a wave.

Nielsen Park is a beautiful 10-hectare park off Greycliffe Ave, Vaucluse. It was named after the Secretary of Lands in 1910 who helped to have this part of the Wentworth Estate purchased by the state, and so available for public use. It fronts the harbour with the white sandy Shark Beach and is now managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS).

Later, I had all sorts of different jogging routes around Woollahra streets. One of the routes passed through Nielsen Park, where I would stop, have a swim, put my joggers on again and jog home in dripping swimmers. Gradually I realised that jogging was taking a toll on my knees and swimming would be more pleasant and gentler on my body. So, about 15+ years ago, I began to drive to Nielsen Park, swim 1km, have a coffee, and then drive home.

For most of the year swimmers are protected by a shark net which runs along 150m length of the beach and is about 50m out in the harbour. The NPWS have advised me that when they take the nets down for 3-4 months in winter (to clean them and protect them from the damaging winter storms) all the tagged Bull Sharks in the harbour head north when the water temperature falls below 20°C. In any event, they tell me, that there hasn’t ever been a shark attack in the harbour between May and October. In the early mornings, when there are mostly only the ‘regulars’ there, it is truly a little corner of paradise in this 5 million people city. One of the endearing features of NP for me is that from 9am onwards on fine days and weekends, it is heavily frequented by large ‘immigrant’ and ‘local’ families from all over Sydney who come with their extended families and friends and settle on the shaded lawn, just behind the beach, for a long happy day with all sorts of exotic food. I returned from Malaysia about 30 years ago and have been retired for most of

I noticed that there were many regular swimmers, single men and women and couples, but that there was little social interaction between them other than an irregular, polite but casual, ‘good morning nod.’ Human beings are creatures of habit and I always (as did others) put my towel and belongings in the same place each day. Being a ‘socialiser,’ I introduced myself to my ‘towel neighbour', Martin and suggested we have a coffee together following our swim. He answered with an enthusiastic “Yes” ... and so started our friendship and the birth of the “Nielsen Park Regulars.” Quickly the invitation was extended to, and readily accepted by, other regular swimmers, men, women and couples of various ages and backgrounds. Academic Excellence is not just your average tutoring centre. As founder, Alida Markovics, states, “We are an academic learning centre that encourages each student to flourish confidently in achieving their intellectual and emotional potential, a life skill that expands well beyond the scope of the HSC”.

These services are complemented by access to a proficient team of counsellors, speech and occupational therapists, and a medical practitioner. Additionally, Academic Excellence students have the access to a spacious after-school study space, as well as a plethora of extensive resources and a comprehensive notes and exam papers written by a team of qualified teachers and tutors.

Academic Excellence is an established, scholastic institution with over 30 years of experience, and provides tailored, one-onone tutoring sessions for both primary and high school students. Established and run by Alida Markovics, a former K-12 Principal, Senior HSC marker and educator for 37 years, Academic Excellence offers an unrivalled reputation in the wealth of experience and knowledge offered by a highly proficient team of confident and experienced tutors. The clinic is renowned for its exceptional HSC results, year in and year out.

This year, they will be introducing a new opportunity regarding custom Academic Excellence notes. There will be a new, updated sets of notes available for purchase. They will be of considerable use before assignments, exams or even just as a study accompaniment. These are incredibly high value notes which include thorough analysis of historical context, academic reception and writings and prepared exam style responses as composed by their experienced and high achieving tutors. Weeks of work are invested into these notes and as such they are an invaluable source of knowledge for students who are looking to strengthen and deepen their knowledge.

2021 was a particularly difficult year for HSC students, they were plunged in and out of lockdown, experienced multiple transitions to and from online learning and had multiple delays to exam schedules. The year was a challenge academically, mentally and socially for all students. Despite these less than favourable circumstances, Academic Excellence 2021 HSC students still managed to excel in the academic field. For primary school students, Academic Excellence offers personalised literacy and numeracy programs, social skill development, play therapy, and dyslexia specialist services. For high school students, these facilities extend to also include regular study skills workshops, group-style seminars, and exam preparation within the school holidays, for years 11 and 12. These individually tailored programs are typically constructed with reference to school readinessprograms, offering psychometric testing and a standardised Woodcock Johnson test, in order to identify your child’s cognitive weaknesses and enhance their strengths.

Throughout her expansive years in education, Alida understands that mainstream schooling is not for every child. Rather than attempting to ‘squeeze’ your child into the standardised box of most schooling environments Academic Excellence’s home-schooling program is a practical solution, following the mandatory requirements of the NSW school curriculum, and provides greater flexibility by adapting to your child’s specific emotional, physical, and academic needs. “We believe that a devoted tutor-student relationship will provide a constant avenue for adolescent and emotional support and intellectual guidance,” Markovics said. Another exciting initiative that is being implemented this academic year is the Academic Excellence Homework Club. This will take place every Wednesday for 1 hour at a cost of $35. CLAIMING WORKING FROM HOME EXPENSES Rose Bay Tax and Finance provides a broad range of services. They bring you over 25 years of tax experience gained from both private practice and managing a wide range of areas in the Tax Office including dispute resolution and tax law interpretation. They can also arrange finance for the purchase of property, vehicles and equipment with some competitive low doc and no doc options for the self-employed. As a result of Covid-19 and many people now working from home, one of the most common queries has been around claiming working from home expenses. There are three methods available:

1. THE SHORTCUT METHOD

The Government recently introduced this method that does not require a designated work area (eg a home office). It allows you to claim 80 cents for every hour worked from home to compensate for the additional costs you’re likely to have, such as higher electricity bills and more use your phone and internet for work related purposes. However, you're unable to claim any other working from home expenses.

2. THE FIXED RATE METHOD

Assuming you do have a home office, you can claim 52 cents for every hour worked from home. This is to cover what’s commonly referred to as ‘running costs’ such as electricity, gas, cleaning etc. You can also claim other expenses such as the workrelated portion of your phone, internet, computer equipment, stationery and other

things necessary to establish or maintain your home office.

3. PERCENTAGE OF ACTUAL COSTS

This is the work-related percentage of the actual expenses you have incurred. For running costs, this is normally based on the floor area of the home office compared to the total floor area. Similar to the fixed cost method, you may also claim additional expenses. You’re able to choose whichever method gives you the highest deduction. However, unfortunately things such as coffee and toilet paper (that you may have previously enjoyed for free!) are not deductible. Similarly, as an employee working from home, you’re unable to claim what’s referred to as ‘occupancy expenses’ such as your mortgage, rates, insurance etc. Just remember to keep appropriate evidence to support your claim and to always exclude any private component. On a different note, Covid-19 has forced many people to look at ways to reduce

YOU WELL?

household expenses. With record low interest rates and a booming property market, it might be time to consider your home loan. Lenders will often advertise more competitive rates to attract new customers but not automatically reduce the rate for their existing customers. So whether it’s requesting your current lender to reduce the rate or refinancing the loan to a different lender that better suits your needs,

Let’s have a reality check. How well are you really and are you really coping with the Covid pandemic? Do you need to talk to someone? Or are you worried about your spouse or your children? How well are they really coping?

it’s important to know that even a slightly lower rate will ultimately save you $1,000’s in interest. Ben Nolan

I, find it very hard to really open up to people even though I’m very chatty. Maybe because my trust has been betrayed so many times.

I would love to recommend him to you, but he’s now retired. But I can recommend Julie as I have been spending a lot of time with her, as she is the head psychologist at the Wellness HQ.

You are probably thinking what is she trying to say? Well from my experience I’d like to share the following with you. There are only three people I can trust with my inner secrets: 1. My lawyer 2. My doctor 3. My psychologist

I feel comfortable with her, and I like her approach. I don’t like psychologists that just scribble down everything you are saying. And I'm not keen on the clinical feel of some places. But at Wellness HQ, as soon as you walk in, you feel relaxed and just want to have a cup of tea.

I'm going to concentrate on No. 3. It’s not a taboo subject, having a psychologist, that you trust and can talk with openly and honestly is like taking medicine or vitamins to cure or prevent things wrong with you and or your family.

As a former high school teacher, Julie has a lot of experience working not only with children and adolescents but also with their carers and adults in general.

Sometimes it may take time to find one that you have good rapport with. For me, it took me years to find the right one and he was a Baptist preacher who felt God told him he would help people more by becoming a psychologist. So, he did and thank God, as after seeing so many, it took this psychologist to explain it to me “It’s not your fault, you were a child”. Without going

Walkabout with Ruth CENTENNIAL PARK AREA In this Ed 38, Feb... I take a walk around the streets surrounding Centennial Park. Centennial Park started out as a reserve to protect the central ponds and swamps which formed early Sydney's water supply. It was superseded by the Nepean water supply system in the 1880s so Centennial Park opened in 1888. Part of the funding was to come from selling off residential lots adjacent to the park, but this did not occur until 1904. No wooden buildings or terrace homes were allowed; brick or stone were mandated, with tile or slate roofs. Between 1905 and 1925, quality homes were built, featuring a mixture of Federation, Arts and Crafts, Victorian and Old English styles.

‘Devoncliffe’, at 26 Lang Rd (2) was first owned by Robert Saunders, senior partner in the Saunders quarry business at Pyrmont. It was built in c.1910 in the Federation Free Classical style and made of sandstone.

Highbury, located at 20 Martin Rd (6) was designed by William Nixon and built from 1912 to 1913. Highbury was the home of Australian novelist Patrick White(the first Australian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature) for approximately 26 years, until his death in 1990. Patrick White moved into Highbury in 1964 and lived there with his partner, Manoly Lascaris, after leaving his home in the suburb of Castle Hill. Following White's death in 1990, Lascaris continued to live in the house almost until he died in 2003. The Crossways located at 50 Martin Rd (7) was built in 1908 for surgeon Dr Gordon Craig and designed by architectural firm Waterhouse and Lake. The Crossways is described as "one of the finest examples of the Federation Arts and Crafts style in Australia".

RANDWICK RALLIES

AGAINST TOWERS Meriton’s latest plans for two massive residential towers on the Pagewood side of Eastgardens have come under attack from Randwick community leaders.

The property giant wants to build a pair of skyscrapers at the former British American Tobacco site. One tower would stand 18 storeys high and the other would be 19 storeys. Together the two buildings would house 449 units. Although the site is in Bayside Council territory, it is residents in the Randwick LGA who would bear the brunt of increased traffic and pollution. And now a showdown could be looming between Bayside and Randwick over the latest plans for the site, recently lodged with Bayside Council. Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said: “Randwick is concerned that this development simply cannot be supported by the existing transport infrastructure. It is local Maroubra residents who will be impacted. “Meriton’s mega-development is simply too tall, too bulky and will effectively house an entire new suburb that can’t be supported

on the existing parking, services, and infrastructure. Until these issues are fixed there is just no reasonable way it can proceed.”

Council is not prepared to take Meriton’s word on the infrastructure implications and Mayor Parker says Randwick is carrying out two independent studies to establish “the true impact of this proposed megadevelopment on our community.” Local activist Maria Poulos-Conkin says the latest plans lodged by Meriton with Bayside Council would spell the death knell for the traditionally quiet, unspoiled suburbs of the south-east. “It’s one of the largest residential developments in Australia,” said Ms Poulos-Conkin, who has led the fight against a cruise terminal at Yarra Bay and is leveraging her social media following to rally opposition to other projects. Ms Poulos-Conkin said there needs to be a comprehensive planning strategy that aligns with population growth and infrastructure. “Public transport is already at capacity – in fact, the bus services have just been cut. The plans seem to have been predicated by an extension of the light rail to the site but there’s no sign of that happening.”

Too big: Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker on the Banks Ave edge of the site Independent Randwick councillor and former Mayor Noel D’Souza said he supported the Meriton project “to a certain extent” because it would provide affordable housing, urgently needed in this area. But he saw the scale as excessive and criticised Bayside for ignoring infrastructure needs. “Bayside seems to encourage and support overdevelopment without infrastructure,” he said. A spokesperson for Bayside Council indicated that it could now be too late to alter the scale of the development. “The site was rezoned from industrial to residential a number of years ago, which facilitated the

development of high-rise apartments. Following completion of the first stage of the development, a concept plan was approved by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel for the northern half of the site in 2020. “Both the rezoning and concept plan processes were the subject of extensive community consultation and all stakeholders, including Randwick City Council, were invited to provide comment. “The parameters approved under the concept plan, such as height and floor space, are not open for reconsideration."

COPING WITH CHANGE Change is inevitable, even for those who try to avoid it. To a certain extent we can control our lives; most of us get to decide what we wear each day, what we eat for lunch, and how we spend our downtime. However, the bigger things in life, those things that often keep us awake at night, such as redundancy, trauma, the breakdown of a relationship or a global pandemic, we may feel we have little control over. And whilst we may not be able to stop these life changing events from occurring, we can control how we react to them.

Whether it be during times of stress, or you find that you are continually experiencing these issues, hypnotherapy can be highly effective in changing unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior in a short period of time (generally within four sessions).

During times of change, clients often tell me that they find it difficult to cope. They experience anxiety, mood fluctuations, sleep disturbances, panic and fear.

FAY HYPNOTHERAPY

Our automatic thoughts, habits and responses take place at an unconscious level, which is why it can be difficult to break patterns and make lasting change through will power alone.

KEMENYS PARTNERS WITH WOOLIES

Iconic Bondi store Kemenys is set to split its offer with Woolworths. Kemenys with continue its renowned liquor offer while a new Woolworths Metro to be built next door will take over the grocery side of the business.

“Kemenys is very excited to be working with Woolworths,” a Kemenys spokesperson told Eastern Suburbs Life. “At the end of the day, Kemenys focus is on the liquor side of the business; we believe we provide fantastic products at great prices and we’re very confident in our partner Woolworths to be able to do the same in grocery.” Following the Kemeny family decision to sell their landholdings at 137-147 Bondi Road, Woolworths acquired the site and will open their new Metro store alongside Kemenys Liquor store. “There’ll be approximately 50:50 split of the area between the liquor offer staying with Kemenys and the new grocery offer that will under Woolies Metro,” the Kemenys spokesperson advised. “Kemenys was always a mixed-use business, where approximately 50% of the store was liquor and 50% was grocery and, in principle, Woolies is taking over the grocery side of the business.”

While Kemenys liquor offer will continue to trade, Kemenys grocery offering closed in late January. Construction of the Woolworths Metro is planned to take approximately a few months, with the aim of opening around Easter (April 17). The 1000 square metre trading space will be shared equally between the two stores and though there’ll be separate entry points and separate registers, as they’ll be right next door to each other, it’ll just be a matter of walking out from one side and walking into another. The convenience factor extends to the customer parking at the rear of the property, which is being retained. The local community is being encouraged to nominate favourite food items they want stocked in the new grocery store. A barcode at Kemenys can be scanned as customers enter or walk past the store to directly communicate with Woolworths about niche

Kemenys and working alongside such an iconic business.”

“We will take great care to ensure the new Metro store is designed to meet the needs of the Bondi community, with a focus on quality fresh and healthy food at affordable prices,” Woolworths Metro General Manager, Justin Nolan, advised.

Opening in 1960, Kemenys was a pioneer of wine retail in Australia, and is renowned for its extensive range of boutique reds and whites, as well as champagne, beer and spirits. Recognised as a leading liquor retailer, Kemenys has won the Australian Liquor Industry Awards’ Liquor Store of the Year ten times since the awards’ inception in 1993.

“Kemenys is a much-loved retailer with a proud 60-year history in Bondi. We’re very excited to be sharing the site with

The Barwon River in flood 2021 In March 2019 my youngest son moved out to live with his father. He was eighteen and this was a huge blow, despite his kindness in expressing his needs. Empty nesting syndrome hit hard and three months later, after a quick road trip to Lightning Ridge, I sat with both sons in the restaurant at Govindas and told them I had been offered a job for the winter in the NSW outback. They encouraged me to go, so in June 2019 I left my home suburb of 26 years for a threemonth adventure out west. Lightning Ridge was a place of the quirkiest joy. Hot bore baths and foul-mouthed Opal miners, kangaroos bouncing around my garden at night and the starriest, starriest skys. Three months was not enough – I wanted to experience the summer. Just before I came home, I drove two and a half hours to a tiny town called Brewarrina to visit the Aboriginal Cultural Museum. It was here that I joined a tour with local guide, Brad Hardy. I was instantly drawn to him and made a joke about going to live there. He ‘hmphed’; judging me as an ignorant city chick, perhaps. And I so was. Three days later, a job ad landed in my Facebook feed. Brewarrina Shire Council

The weir and the fish way, Brewarrina

were looking for someone to run the Brewarrina News, and after a hilarious Skype interview from the room of a guest house in Sans Souci, I was offered a job. A month after that, I moved 900kms to Brewarrina. It was not all easy, by any means. There were challenges that brought me to my knees. But there was also the arrival of the Barwon River after seven years of drought. February 16, 2020 will go down in my story as one of the most magnificent days of my life; when I watched a dry river bed become an Amazonian flow over the course of a day… (have you ever watched a river bed fill?) and I watched kids catch fish with their bare hands and I witnessed a town come back to life. “The river is our blood”, says Brad Hardy. Over the following months I witnessed the transformation of a landscape and photographing and documenting this became a distraction from the challenges of daily life. I watched birds get fatter, flocks get bigger. I watched people, daily, drive down to the town weir just to look… I watched sunsets and dust storms and an outback turn green. THE HEALING POWER OF CHILDHOOD FRIENDSHIPS Pathways to pandemic recovery for children If we truly reflect on our own childhood friendships, even the transient ones, all provided opportunities for us to learn more about ourselves and other people.

We cannot reflect on the impact of the pandemic on our children without acknowledging the impact it has had on the friendships children form and their ability to engage freely with other children outside of their own family. Middle childhood is an important time for making friendships, participating in rituals and learning about your own responses to life. In our development it is critical that we make and sustain friendships as part of healthy social and emotional development. A child’s first experience of emotional intimacy is often the sharing of a secret or a whispered confession. The real and often forgotten cost of the pandemic is the social deprivation of children caused by the lack of time for them to spend in self regulated friendships. It is aided and abetted by the perception that children must be supervised at all times and that the best chance you have for success in later life is to attend as many extracurricular activities as can be fitted in to the average week. Our own response in developing a pathway to children’s recovery from the pandemic, should be to encourage and support the development of childhood friendships. Time for kids to be alone together, to hang out, to be bored, to have non compulsory activity and opportunities for free play, and sometimes….to build a cubby where the sign

on the door says “no adults allowed” are all part of that recovery process. Opportunities for children to explore feelings, to muse and to share secrets, to negotiate boundaries and rules, free from adult oversight and questions are integral to the development of relationships. It is these friendships or lack of them that have been most impacted by the sustained period of “lockdown”. Our goal for 2022 should not be to rush back to routine, but to ensure time is set aside for children to have time to nurture new friendships, or rediscover old ones, to allow time for children to hang out and ‘just be’ with other children. “What did you do today?” should be replaced in our conversation with “Who did you hang out with today? “ My hope for children in 2022 is that they have the opportunity to find a play space all their own where they have a chance to rediscover the joy of friendship. A place to share secrets, a haven to reflect on life and an opportunity to benefit with their friends from the shared intimacy of an unhurried, childhood friendship. 20 COUNCIL NEWS

EASTERN SUBURBS Ed 38, February, 2022

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to 2022!

Council election results

Councillor Susan Wynne has been re-elected as the Mayor of Woollahra, and Councillor Isabelle Shapiro elected as Deputy Mayor, with both terms to run until Sept 2023.

Masselos re-elected

Councillor Paula Masselos (Labor) and Councillor Elaine Keenan (Greens), both of Lawson Ward, have been re-elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Waverley.

Parker returned as Mayor

Labor councillor Dylan Parker has been returned as Mayor and Kym Chapple of the Greens is his deputy.

Woollahra Council welcomed four new Councillors and 11 returning Councillors at the December Local Government Election, with the Woollahra community electing the highest number of female Councillors in NSW, being 10 of the 15 Councillors.

Made up of five Labor, five Liberal, four Greens and one Independent councillor, the new-look Council will also have a majority female representation for the first time in Randwick Council history. There are eight female and seven male councillors.

The newly-elected Council will serve a three-year term, from 2021-2024. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/council for more information.

Summer art on show

Mayor Masselos will hold office until Sept 19, 2023 and will be joined on Council by Hunter Ward Councillors Steven Lewis, Sally Betts and Will Nemesh; fellow Lawson Ward Councillor Angela Burrill, Bondi Ward Councillors Michelle Gray, Dominic Wy Kanak and Leon Goltsman, and Waverley Ward Councillors Tim Murray, Ludovico Fabiano, and Tony Kay. Mayor Masselos was first elected Mayor of Waverley in September 2019 and remained in the position until Council entered caretaker period ahead of the NSW Local Government Elections on Dec 4, 2021. She said she looks forward to continuing to represent the Waverley community during these unprecedented times and working alongside our dedicated Council officers and community groups and leaders to help make Waverley an even better place to live, work, visit and do business.

There are multiple opportunities to engage with the arts in Woollahra this summer, with a series of exhibitions on show at the brand new Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, located at Blackburn Gardens and open Wednesday to Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm. Admission is free. Visit woollahragallery.com.au for further details. Council has also partnered with UNSW Epicentre to present Double Vision, an exciting new art project featuring a digital screen installed at Kiaora Place in Double Bay, which features diverse content such as new media artworks and local historical images.

COVID update

Due to health restrictions introduced by the NSW Government, face masks must be worn for the duration of your visit to all Woollahra Council venues, and check-in via QR code is required. Our customer service centre at Woollahra Council Chambers in Double Bay is open, and our staff can be contacted on 9391 7000. Visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/ services to submit a service request, or download the Woollahra Council App for fast, easy access to Council services anytime, anywhere.

“In spite of the pandemic and the new challenges we now face because of Omicron, and the that this term of council is only two years and eight months instead of the usual four years, Council is delivering the biggest capital works program in Waverley’s history,” Mayor Masselos said. “This includes the restoration of the iconic Bondi Pavilion and the Boot Factory building, and much-needed upgrades to our local villages, parks and playground areas – all with a balanced budget.”

Bus depot works

Good news for cyclists, but not-so good news for motorists – Waverley Council and Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) are closing the Oxford St exit at Waverley Bus Depot, completing the St James Rd to York Rd section of the Bondi Junction Cycleway. Buses will enter and exit the depot around the corner in York Rd, using a new set of traffic signals. Fifteen parking spots will be sacrificed, as will a purple Jacaranda tree near the intersection. A report to Waverley’s Traffic Committee said the loss of parking was “significant” and floated the idea of parking being restored outside peak hours. Another downside of the scheme for motorists will be traffic delays as buses turn right into York Rd. Work is scheduled to commence in late February, with completion by early April.

A man who raises money for worthy causes by dressing as superheroes has been honoured in Randwick Council’s Australia Day Awards.

Tasman Cassim has walked all over Australia dressed as different superheroes, raising more than $62,000. One of his most impressive feats was doing 24 laps of Heffron Park in Maroubra dressed as 24 different superheroes. The $24,000 raised by that endeavour contributed to a new playground, aptly named The Superhero Playground, at Maroubra Bay Public School. Also receiving awards from Mayor Dylan Parker on Australia Day were the community group ProjectKindness and Dr Chris Godfrey, who operates a veterinary practice at Lexington Place, in the South Maroubra public housing estate. The Youth Award went to Alice Lee, who has raised money for a number of causes including an Indigenous Scholarship Program at St Catherine’s school and purchase of 4000 surgical masks to help people in the community.

Wriggly composting subsidy

Composting and worm farming at home are a simple way to turn your food scraps into rich nutritious garden soil and reduce your waste to landfill for free. When in landfill, your food scraps produce greenhouse gases so worm farming and composting will help reduce your emissions too! It’s a win-win for all. Randwick residents are eligible for a compost bin or worm farm at up to 80% off the retail price, plus free delivery. Getting your subsidized compost bin or worm farm is easy – just visit: https://compostrevolution.com.au/ randwick/

I hope the Christmas and New Year period brought you and your family some rest and relaxation and that you are emboldened to tackle whatever the year ahead has in store. I also wish to acknowledge that for many in our community, the summer period will have involved having to face periods of isolation, disconnection and illness. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest thanks to those who have been volunteering and working over the summer period to help keep our community safe. Thank you to all our amazing frontline workers who have continued to work over this period to protect our community. I wish to extend special thanks to our wonderful nurses, doctors, midwives, paramedics, orderlies, cleaners, catering staff, allied health staff and indeed all of our frontline health care workers. I also wish to acknowledge our phenomenal public health unit based at the Prince of Wales Hospital, who have served our community and this state so well in their contact tracing work, and their expert advice. One of the most important lessons of the pandemic is that our health services are underfunded, our healthcare workers are undervalued and our healthcare system is at breaking point. We know how important nurse-to-patient ratios are. We know how important it is to address staff shortages and we know how crucial it is to properly fund our public health services. We need to tackle these concerns head on if we are to keep our community and our incredible frontline workers safe, healthy and well. If we do not learn from this experience, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. It is our frontline workers who have kept our communities going through this pandemic. They are absolutely essential and they deserve facilities and salaries that reflect how important they are. Finally, as we embark upon a new school year, I again wish to thank the amazing work done by our teachers over the past two years. These frontline workers have done an incredible job keeping our students engaged and learning in the toughest of circumstances, and I wish them all the best for a smoother school year in 2022.
