“Send not to know for whom the bell tolls” wrote John Donne in 1623, “It tolls for thee. For no man is an island, entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less.” These words, paraphrased from his poem, tell us why we are angry and sad, bewildered and worried, by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, an independent, democratic, sovereign state of 43 million people with an economy about the size of Australia’s.

How can it be that the decision of a small group of people can cause so much pain, fear and destruction to fellow humans, with no apparent remorse, and at the same time blame them for being the cause of the aggression? People of goodwill can never understand how this can happen, and the vast majority of people in the world are people of goodwill. They feel the pains, sorrows, happiness and joys of their fellow humans, from the moment they are born. If one baby in the ward cries, they all cry and if one person yawns, so do those around them. This empathy is what drives the charities, community groups and volunteer organisations that make up the fabric of societies. In Australia, almost one third of people over 15 do unpaid voluntary work, through organisations, during the course of a year.

Sayings like this and “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” were heard commonly in the last century, but have currently fallen away. Australian journalist Paul Kelly wrote recently “Don’t think that peaceful, liberal democracy is the natural order of human nature. A stable and peaceful order has to be built with incentives and disincentives ”. Which is why all liberal democracies must unite to isolate the Putin leadership and at the same time support the people of the Ukraine. Fortunately fairness, compassion and the ability to unite against a common aggressor are built into the human gene. In his book "Carnage & Culture ", Victor Davis Hanson explains that the concept of citizenship and a toleration for dissent will eventually overcome the short term victories of despots. He examines nine battles between 480 BC and 1968 AD and concludes that free societies are the most resilient in war, even though they are often overwhelmed at the start. Let us hope that by working together the world’s free democratic societies will prove him right again. PROTECTING SYDNEY’S STYLISH

BAYSIDE VILLAGE The Double Bay Residents’ Association (DBRA) is a forum for residents who wish to maintain the low-rise village character which has differentiated Double Bay from other Sydney suburbs. Since its establishment some 40 years ago, the association has played an active role in many of the changes which have taken place – working with Woollahra Council on the successful Kiaora Lands development, opposing development applications which threaten Double Bay’s village atmosphere and representing residents’ issues to the Council. In 2014, the Council published a plan which envisaged Double Bay as ‘Sydney’s Stylish Bayside Village – intimate, refreshing’ which the DBRA strongly endorsed. Regrettably, the attributes which have attracted generations of people to live in and visit Double Bay have made it a ‘honeypot’ for property developers focused on maximising short-term profit rather than enhancing residents’ amenity. The need to assess and respond to the deluge of development applications (DAs) has created a challenge. Exacerbating the problem, the NSW Government has stripped

councils of their planning powers and now objections are heard by governmentappointed planning panels and often the Land & Environment Court. Since November, the DBRA has written and presented 15 submissions on DAs and other planning proposals and we are aware of others in the pipeline. Members’ support in writing objections and speaking at planning panel and court hearings is vital to stem the tide of higher and bulkier buildings which breach Council’s current controls and threaten Double Bay’s village character.

A CRITICAL TIME FOR DOUBLE BAY

On February 14, Woollahra’s eight Liberal councillors passed a motion, opposed by Residents First and Greens councillors, to place on exhibition a Draft Double Bay Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy. Despite all Woollahra’s 15 councillors pledging to ‘fight overdevelopment’ during the December election, a key plank of the strategy is to increase existing height limits from mainly four storeys (14.7 metres) to six storeys (21.5 metres) – a 50% increase.

This is a major threat to Double Bay’s low-rise village character. If the strategy is adopted, property developers will seize on it to insist that all six storey DAs be approved – and, as is their custom, demand yet more height. The strategy is expected to go on public exhibition in mid-March. It will then be important that all residents and others who enjoy visiting Double Bay communicate their views to Woollahra councillors.

WORKING BAYS OF THE EAST Rose Bay has been a place dear to many over the years. As records of the area prior to and following early European settlement are sparse at best one can only imagine what a fertile and special place it must have been for the local Gadigal people.

The lower plain behind the bay which is now mostly taken up by the Woollahra and Royal Sydney Golf Clubs was once a combination of coastal swamp forests, salt water tidal estuaries and sand dunes leading all the way to Bondi Beach. It must have been a fantastic area for foraging and the large and well-known sand bars on the south eastern side of the bay (Rose Bay Beach) would have provided access to easy fishing: an endless bounty of crabs, oysters and pipis for the locals. Surrounded by large hills, Rose Bay has a great deal of shelter from all but the heaviest northerly and southerly winds and has been used by commercial and recreational mariners as a safe place to anchor and shelter their vessels for a long time. Today it is possibly the busiest bay in Australia with hundreds of yachts and motor boats either on swing mooring or in berths at the clubs and marinas on the Western side. The bay has also been used for military training since 1914, with the soon to be Diggers of WWI learning how to embark and disembark from their ships and smaller boats here. Even today the bay is still used by the

Royal Australian Navy and you might see smaller naval vessels and other commercial boats swinging their compass while at anchor here to adjust it for accuracy.

ROSE BAY - PART TWO

It also wasn’t that long ago that the bay was used as an international flying boat airport. Although first used in 1914, it really took off when Qantas Empire Airways and Imperial Airways used it as their base for London to Sydney passenger services in 1938. Can you imagine that? Flying to London on a flying boat, what an adventure it must have been. In fact, the Australian cricket team of 1946 which included the likes of Sir Donald Bradman flew to New Zealand from here. By historical accounts it was a very tight fit with all the teams’ gear and extra fuel and was “quite a bumpy ride”. After years of hardship and war that must have been a modest account of the trip by men who had seen a lot. There was also some consternation amongst the team that they wouldn’t even be allowed to have a smoke to calm the nerves on the long and turbulent flight due to the large fuel supply they were carrying to do it in one leg. The flight duration of land-based aircraft increased however, and the need for flying boats and seaplanes diminished. The last commercial flight was an Ansett to Lord Howe Island service in September 1974. Today, locals and visitors will still see and hear the elegant planes coming in to land and take off with a small commercial

operation for tourism now based at the site operating regular daily sightseeing flights. There were some small boat building and fishing industries in the bay during the 20th Century but not on the same level as other bays closer to Sydney Cove or in more strategic commercial locations. Today the maritime tradition is carried on by the Royal Motor Yacht and Woollahra Sailing Clubs as well the Point Piper and Rose Bay Marinas providing maintenance services and recreation facilities for those who use

the waterway. Many locals will also know of or probably have fond memories of the well-established canoe and board hire business just near the sailing club. You don’t need to own a boat to experience the Bay as there is a nice walk along the famous seawall and beautiful grass to sit on at Lyne Park and watch the water sparkle with easy and safe swimming access from Rose Bay Beach. A TRIBUTE TO THE

NIELSEN PARK REGULARS - PART THREE I discovered through our initial conversations, that ‘early riser, regular swimmers,’ had more in common than just wishing to be healthy, and benefiting from the best part of the day. They also seemed to share a lot of other things in common, including, I guessed, a common set of values. Not ‘woke’, politically correct, right- or left-wing values, but common-sense, practical, family type values. We rarely have any philosophical discussions or pose personal belief type questions, but that was the impression I had from our casual ‘no strings attached’ discussions that sought nothing more than pleasant social interaction. One or two singles have formed happy couples, and most of those sharing coffee, are polite enough to laugh at my jokes…. mostly clean but often a bit daring, but humorous! Some would have a quick coffee and leave; others would linger a while and chat, depending on what other activities they had planned that particular day. I then offered to collect their email addresses and to organise a Christmas breakfast at the NP Kiosk, the week prior to Christmas. This was the first “NP

Regulars” event. All 20 ‘Regulars ‘at that time, and some partners, attended the breakfast which was judged a great success.

I, and others, welcomed new “members” and I collected their email addresses and mobile numbers. Over the next three years I invited all the 50-60 Regulars to an end of summer cocktail at home. They were lovely friendly events and helped to solidify our little community group. But, as numbers grew, the catering etc. became a bit onerous on Graziella. So, the next five years I organised, on the last Sunday in March, a ‘Good Neighbour Day’ event at Nielsen Park and it was catered for by the Kiosk lessee and paid for by the Regulars (at a subsidised price because of a Council Community Grant, achieved through my paperwork and lobbying by the Vaucluse Councillor, Mayor Susan Wynne who has been a fantastic supporter… and has been joined, more recently, by another Vaucluse Councillor, Mary-Lou Jarvis.)

As the last rays of the end of March sun disappeared, the Kiosk lessee, the loved Apollo and his wonderful staff, did an excellent job serving us all ample quantities of battered fish and deliciously hot crisp chips and salad. For the next two years the event was the same with the same food but, for weather and catering reasons, we decided to hold the meal in the annex behind the kiosk. They were each attended by 100 NP Regulars and also very successful.

About 50% of us put batteries in general waste. Protecting the rights of children I made a commitment when I was first running for election in 2018 that I believed the ability of schools to discriminate against children on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity was wrong, and should be corrected. I have repeated that view publicly many times since. Last month, in Parliament, I had the opportunity to right this historic wrong, and fix a piece of legislation — the Sex Discrimination Act — which authorised such discrimination in a way that was causing distress to countless individuals and families, and was out of step with community values.

I endeavoured to get my Coalition colleagues to support me in this change. I believe they support me on the issue of principle, but were not yet ready to address this issue in legislation until further consultation had been undertaken. I respect that difference of opinion, but I had to keep faith with my own electorate, my own commitments, and my own conscience on this issue.

At around 4am on Thursday February 10, 2022, at the end of a long debate in Parliament, and working with other Parliamentary colleagues, including from my own party, we were able to address this issue, and pass a law that will abolish the ability for religious schools to discriminate against or expel trans and gay students. I also supported the passage of another piece of legislation, the Religious Discrimination Act, which is an important addition to our suite of anti-discrimination legislation. This Act would ensure people cannot be discriminated against on the basis of their religion and faith, and will provide important protection for religious schools and other organisations to maintain their religious nature. These issues, which go to the heart of rights and freedoms in our society, invariably generate wide-ranging and often passionately-held views. I hope you understand and appreciate my perspective on this issue, and I am always free and open to discuss alternative viewpoints.

This month, we continue to honour the legacy of John Hubert Plunkett, the NSW Attorney General responsible for shaping Modern Australia.

JOHN HUBERT PLUNKETT – PART TWO

Among the many reforms Governor Bourke and John Hubert Plunkett were able to implement in the years from 1832-1837 were some very significant advances in human rights, unheard of in any society at that time including the fledgling American democracy. Indeed, our reformers preceded Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery in the USA in 1865 (after a disastrous civil war), by establishing an effective legislative platform advancing the principle of equality of all before the law, 30 years prior. To gauge the breadth of their influence, we must consider the nature of the British possession of the new colony of New South Wales. Initially, various Governors, prior to Richard Bourke, had been instructed since Captain Cook claimed the East Coast of Australia as a British possession to limit the expansion of the colony to “limits of location” – the designated 19 counties; i.e., those areas necessary to support the small population effectively serving as penal colonies. When the number of free settlers and emancipists rapidly expanded and people could make money from growing wool (prior to 1833 the colonies largest export were whaling products), great pressure was applied to populate the expansive grasslands which had been the traditional domain of the First Nations people. One bold move by John Batman of the Port Phillip Progress Association attempted to change the longestablished rules of land grants which had applied to the limits of location. Bourke responded then by proclaiming the land beyond his grants as terra nullius (despite the misuse of this term in subsequent history) effectively to protect the Aboriginals (to use the term current at that time) from unfair land transfer contracts as attempted by Batman and others. The dilemma for Bourke and later Governors then became how to control the ‘squatters’ i.e., those settlers who grazed the land but had no legal title. Clearly, it became impossible to police the outer areas and remove

‘trespassers’ from what was now Crown lands. The result was that within a very few years there came a rapacious land grab, with disastrous consequences for the displaced native populations. In the process of this land grab, many atrocities were committed in what were very uneven contests. Small bands of natives were heavily outweighed by armed men on horseback. Plunkett, in particular, was outraged and one of his great personal legacies was to prosecute the Myall Creek massacre accused, which resulted in seven perpetrators being hanged for the massacre of 28 Aboriginal men, women and children. This massacre was orchestrated against defenceless natives. It was typical of many such atrocities beyond the limits of location in what was effectively Australia’s ‘wild west’. Against widespread public opposition, Plunkett prosecuted two trials and the successful conviction stands as a bulwark against prejudice and discrimination. In his excellent book Murder at Myall Creek, Mark Tedeschi QC, states that “the 1838 trials had a subtle, long-term effect in promoting an underlying principle of justice and equality for all under Australian law. While they did not prevent future crimes of a similar nature, they stand as a beacon of humanity and interracial justice that illuminated the way for Australian to develop as a civilised nation”.

In this Ed 39, March... I take a walk along the Rose Bay Marina pointing out interesting historical buildings and events My walk begins at Lyne Park, which was reclaimed from tidal sand flats in 1902 to form a 14 acre (5.6 ha.) reserve named in honour of Sir William Lyne, the NSW Premier from 1899 to 1901. In 1938, a flying boat base was established on this ground - the first flight to England leaving July 5, 1938 (Short 'Empire' class, Cooee, VH-ABF). Those first flights connected Sydney to Singapore for £195, and Rose Bay became Australia's first international airport. The last commercial flight was on Sept 10, 1974 to Lord Howe Island. The base was demolished and returned to parkland. (See Working Bays of the East pg6)

Hello Everyone,

I turn right into O'Sullivan Rd towards Plumer Road Shopping Village. Plumer Road Shops were part of the Beresford Estate and were subdivided from 1925-28 as business sites. Built in the 1920s and mid 1930s they display architectural characteristics of the inter-war art deco style.

It's been a long strange road for all of us never knowing what the next week will bring. I feel we are now able to feel safe and happy and enjoy our days in our beautiful city.

Heading back to NSH Rd I turn right into Manion Ave...DId you know that an unexploded bomb by the Japanese in WW2 hit No 36 Manion Ave! I continue to the end of Manion Ave to the Rose Bay Community Garden, which is built on sustainable organic principles that are in harmony with the nature of the local area.

At the entrance of Lyne Park is the Rose Bay War Memorial. This was designed by local architect Reginald Prevost in Art Deco style, the Memorial was unveiled on April 21, 1935 by Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven (later Lord Gowrie), the then Governor of NSW. The gates came from 'Colebrook', a demolished house that stood at the corner of NSH and Bellevue Roads, Double Bay

Back onto NSH Rd I walk by Royal Sydney Golf Club. Founded in 1893, the club was located at Concord. In 1899, the Club moved to Rose Bay, so that it could concentrate on the development of its links at Bondi. The present Club House, designed by architect Maurice Halligan, was built in 1922 replacing the one burnt down in 1920.

I walk up NSH Rd towards the Rose Bay Police Station, passing the scenic Rose Bay marina. The Rose Bay seawall separates the harbour and NSH Rd. It was constructed 1924-26, concurrent with the widening of NSH Rd and in centralising the tram tracks.

I cross NSH Rd and head back towards Rose Bay. In Salisbury Rd I come across Rose Bay Lodge, built in 1834 by architect John Verge for James Holt who managed the 'Cooper Estate'. When built, it was the only house on the 'Estate' with the possible exception of Henrietta Villa, Prominent occupiers of the house included Sir Daniel Cooper (his son Daniel was born there in 1848), Walter Lamb (1825-1906) and Sir John Hay (1816-1892) - they were all noted businessmen and parliamentarians.

In 1937, a timber framed structure, was refurbished and named Kent Hall in honour of the Duke of Kent who was nominated Governor-General of Australia, 1938 but did not proceed - WW2 intervened and he was killed in an air crash in 1942. In 1947, a club was established on the site which in 1951 became the Rose Bay RSL Club. The building was demolished when the brick RSL building was put up in 1959.

The Rose Bay Police Station is a Victorian Italianate style octagonal structure, which was built in the late 1850's. It was originally the Lodge (gatehouse) to Woollahra House and was acquired and remodelled in 1930 for police use.

CHRIS CHANNELS CHURCHILL We’ll fight them on the beaches. We’ll fight them on the shopping strip, on the airport billboard hoardings. We will never surrender! As campaign manager for No More Incinerators, retired chemical engineer Chris Hanson has become an activist, co-ordinating the fight against paper manufacturer Opal and waste disposal company Suez. The two industrial giants want to build a facility in Matraville that would generate steam by burning dry waste, releasing pollutants from a 60-metre chimney stack. Chris seems to have channelled Churchill as he co-ordinates the battle against the incinerator on different fronts, most recently through information booths at local beaches. Before that anti-incinerator posters were appearing at a number of locations including outside the former CBA premises in Matraville, which Suez rented as a short-lived community information centre. When Chris heard about the project two years ago, he was dismayed. Much of his

career had involved carrying out remedial work on contaminated industrial land. One of these projects had involved cleaning up mercury and chlorinated solvents at the former ICI site in Banksmeadow, now run by Orica. “To me, the incinerator project would be a return to the bad old days, when Sydney was becoming a chemical swamp,” said Chris, a Little Bay local. “I just thought ‘Here we go again!’” The proposed incinerator site is near houses, childcare centres and the local pony club. Its chimney stack would be taller than the sails of the Sydney Opera House. But it is the toxic plume that would be released from the towering chimney that has Chris worried. “There would be ultrafine and nanoparticles of toxic pollutants such as dioxins, heavy metals and other toxic substances that can cause serious illnesses and birth defects,” Chris said. “They don’t break down and can build up in people and the environment.” Chris began his fight by starting the No More Incinerators Eastern Suburbs page on Face-

book, where it has since attracted 1300 followers. While the four figure following doesn’t make him Kim Kardashian, he has used the page to co-ordinate a series of successful protests and media events, galvanising local politicians and celebrities into action. Meanwhile, the group is cultivating additional followers on Twitter and Instagram. Plus there is a dedicated No More Incinerators website and Go Fund Me page. In addition, the anti-incinerator message can be seen on garbage trucks and airport billboards, thanks to Bayside and Randwick Councils. Now it seems that the state government may finally be listening to Chris and the

others who have gone into bat against Suez’s incinerator, having just released draft regulations that may prevent the Matraville incinerator from being built. The latest meeting of Matraville Precinct Committee was told that Suez and Opal now seem to have gone cold on the project, indicating that Suez’s incinerator may not meet the criteria under the draft legislation. Chris’s message: “It looks promising but we are not there yet. Until the regulations are passed and Suez withdraws its proposal, the fight continues. So keep your objections coming.”

CREATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF GENEROSITY No lockdowns for local charity: kids keep giving back all through the pandemic Kids Giving Back is a local charity founded almost ten years ago with a mission to Create the Next Generation of Generosity. The mission of Kids Giving Back is accomplished by empowering and enabling kids to give back to their community and then embrace this value of helping others for their lifetime. The pandemic certainly tested our mission; would kids, locked down and masked up, still come forward to help others when helping was even harder? We found the answer to be a resounding YES! Never have we been more convinced that our future is in good hands than during the last few years, and as we look ahead to 2022. The pandemic, while difficult for so many on multiple levels, did not stop our younger generations from wanting to step forward and give back to those in need – in fact, it fuelled their determination even more! It’s inspiring, hopeful and heart-warming: over 3600 volunteers joined Kids Giving Back in 2021 and met the challenges faced by our most vulnerable with spirit, kindness and determination. Kids zoomed into bingo and conversation with isolated aged care residents, groups of home-learning students

organised online fundraisers to sponsor our chef to make meals for members of the homeless community when our Paddington facility was closed to the public, and our little helpers hand-made dog and cat toys for sheltered animals lonely from missing human visits. And when we weren’t locked down, kids of all ages came in and cooked … and cooked, and cooked! Kids and families made 31,795 meals, 2,243 care packs and school supply bags and provided 35 charities with much needed resources, not just locally but as far as the Northern Territory! With all this phenomenal giving back by kids and families last year, we are even more inspired to give back bigger in 2022 – so how can you be part of the giving back movement? There are several ways! Kids Giving Back needs your helping hands in our programs so we can keep meeting the increasing demand for food and resources for those in need, but we also need your feet! Our annual Wildwalk is taking place on May 22 this year in Bundeena National Park and is a fun-d-raising event to get you moving and motivated, and us supported to be able to give back to more people in more places

with more resources and more meals. Register before April 15 for the early bird price and come along with your kids, your friends or your colleagues. This year funds raised go directly to expanding our programs for kids to help all across our lucky country. One of the most wonderful aspects of supporting Kids Giving Back is every dollar raised through Wildwalk holds a triple value and impact: teaching kids kindness and service through action while directly feeding and helping our vulnerable and ultimately creating social cohesion and empathy showing generations how doing good feels good, and creates a better world. Our Paddington hub is once again open to the public and cooking meals for our charity partners every week; we provide beautiful, healthy meals cooked with care, and delivered with kids’ handwritten notes of

support to those experiencing disadvantage. We will be offering weekly after-school programs and we hold school holiday programs every day of every school holiday break. This year our expansion includes even more opportunities for older Youth Changemakers (ages 14-18) within schools and communities across Greater Sydney because as we can all appreciate, help is needed everywhere. MORE LOCAL PARKING PERMITS Extra resident parking is on the cards. With many people working from home or needing to isolate during COVID-19, the issue of parking – which had become increasingly difficult over the past few years – was exacerbated. Waverley Council is now considering several areas in Bondi and Bronte.

“Waverley Council is always looking for the best solutions to help manage the high demand for parking in Waverley,” Paula Masselos, Mayor of Waverley, told Eastern Suburbs Life. “This includes trialling and installing new infrastructure and systems to make parking easier and more accessible, and to help encourage activity in Waverley’s commercial areas after business hours.” As well as an initial survey about extending the resident parking scheme (closing March 10), Council is inviting community feedback over staggered deadlines through 2022/2023 to cover five proposed areas. Resident Parking Schemes (RPS) already operate in parts of Bondi Junction, Bondi Beach, Bronte, Charing Cross, Queens Park and Tamarama. Council is consulting

residents on this proposal to see if there’s support in extending its RPS to Alexander, Carlisle, Denham and Fletcher streets, and Gaerloch and Illawong avenues. These streets are located within existing RPS Area 11. Extending the RPS would limit parking in these streets to two hours for non-permit holders. “We want to make it easier for people to find parking close to where they live, and that's why we are asking residents who live in Residential Parking Scheme Area 11 to tell us whether they would like the scheme expanded to their neighbourhood,” Masselos explained. A parking permit allows the resident to park their vehicle free of charge for an unlimited time in a designated area signposted hour parking – ‘Permit Holders Excepted’, which is usually close to their home, not just the street in which they live. Consultation for Area A was completed in February 2022, while the remaining consultations are scheduled as follows: Area B – April 2022; Area C – August 2022; Area D – February 2023; Area E – June 2023.

Waverley residents within an RPS zone are entitled to a maximum of three permits per single residence and per unit in strata buildings, while those living in a non-strata building unit or a room in boarding house are entitled to one permit. The first permit is free for residents who have no off-street parking, with the permit number reducing for every off-street parking space at the property. Annual visitor, short term, interim, and carer parking permits are also available. Eligible vehicles for resident parking permits include cars (private, company or rental), motor bikes/scooters, and electric scooters. Excluded are trucks, buses, trams, tractors, or trailers (boat or caravan).

FROM OUTBACK TOWN

TO BRONTE BEACH The move to Bronte has been joyful, although challenging in terms of being overwhelmed, on occasion, by sensory stimulation. I have yet to see my younger son properly; he had COVID when I arrived and so we ‘visited’ over Christmas via Zoom, and he stood on his balcony whilst I chatted to him from the street. Since then, he has been working to cover co-workers as they have gone down with the dreaded thing and resting, so he tells me.

I received news of my father’s death within two weeks of my arrival and was faced with the decision of whether to return to the UK for his funeral. It had been a tricky relationship and so the grief isn’t too intense, although inevitable regrets reveal themselves. My studio on Macpherson Street is loud but it doesn’t bother me. In Brewarrina, in my three-bedroom home in Wilson Street, I would sometimes awaken to the loud sound of black cockatoos, a sign that rain was coming and a huge reason to be cheerful. I remember the first time it rained when I was there; my co-worker was so excited and I questioned out loud (big mistake), ‘How am I gonna get home without destroying my sandals?’ She almost fell off her chair. During that first downpour in months, I took videos of water cascading over the roof of the Visitors Centre where I was working. Water is precious out West. I arrived in drought. Just four months prior I had almost cried whilst driving through parched landscapes and past dry riverbeds. The land was a shade of

brown/grey that sung of sadness. The land, I remember thinking, is crying out for help.

So, when rain comes, life gets busier. No-one moans about it. People celebrate and count the millimetres. I know a farmer who cares more about the rainfall than whether her crops get damaged. She’s an enlightened chick, and wheat has such a narrow window for harvesting that when it’s ready, its like ‘all systems’ go. Harvesting occurs throughout the night, trucks pick up the grains and take them to the silo at 2am. For if rain comes again and the crop gets wet, it cannot be harvested, and it may well be destroyed. I was invited to a farm and as I looked around at the massive paddocks of crop I thought ‘wow’, this whole system exists to feed us folk in the cities. It’s an interesting way we do business. After the river came back, pelicans came, thousands upon thousands, and the locals said they had never seen so many. One dawn I went down to the river as they were flying in from their sleeping spots. I watched them arrive… and arrive... more and more and more and they just kept coming. Taking many steps against coercive control

‘Mum, are we going to change the world?’ asked Logan, aged 8. He’d heard his parents, Sam and Josh Carmont, of Botany, planning to increase awareness of coercive control and raise funds to support victims and survivors. ‘We’re just taking a small step,’ Sam assured him. But this mother of two, an audiovisual coordinator at Sydney Children’s Hospital, was vastly understating her plans. She and Josh were both deeply disturbed about friends who were emotionally and financially abused by men in their lives, and barred from accessing finances, work and contact with loved ones. Research increased the Carmonts’ awareness of how prevalent coercive control is, and how devastating its effects are on women and children and some men.

60KM, 31 DAYS

Sam said, ‘I’m relatively fit for a 40-year-old, so Josh and I came up with a way to make the issue visible.’ Sam would walk 60km a day throughout January, a time when many people would be outdoors. The focus would be on creating awareness and raising funds for two charities – Women’s Community Shelters, and DV NSW. Six months before her walk, Sam began training, working with a nutritionist, a podiatrist and a physiotherapist. Did you see Sam in January? Her 11-hour daily route took her from Booralee Park in Botany, through Maroubra Junction, and then along the coastal walk from Bronte to Clovelly, along the Bondi promenade and up to Watson’s Bay. STEPPING OUT TOGETHER

‘The first few days were great’, Sam said, ‘though some days I was injured and it was very hard. Ice baths were a daily necessity!’ But three things kept Sam going. ‘The first was remembering my “why”: victims of coercive control would see the sign on my back and message me. One saw me walking in the rain, and this encouraged her to tell me her story. ‘The second was knowing I was increasing awareness. People would see me walking, start a conversation, send me messages, tell their friends. ‘The third was everyone’s support. Josh, my brother and family walked with me some days, Josh often accompanying me on the last hard 20km. Friends and community joined in, including some local celebrities. ‘Other support came in the form of donations. It’s been humbling and overwhelming: to date we’ve raised over $13,000 for the two charities.’

NEXT STEPS

Sam and Josh are currently looking to get other charities on board and work out the form next year’s event will take. ‘In the meantime,’ Sam said, ‘our fundraiser is still open for a month.’ Your next step could be a donation.

Woollahra to go 100% renewable

From July, 100% of Woollahra Council’s electricity is set to come from renewables. Our 74 Council sites, including buildings, parks and street lighting will be powered by solar, reducing Council’s emissions by nearly 50 per cent, as part of a deal between the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils and ZEN Energy for supply from the Moree, Hillston and Nevertire Solar Farms in NSW.

Sneaky timing of backpacker hostel liquor application

A backpacker hostel in Bondi has been accused of trying to get a liquor licence by stealth after lodging its application just before Christmas. Councillor Michelle Gray (Labor) said the Village Backpackers Hostel on Lamrock Avenue, Bondi Beach put in its application to the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) on December 21, 2021. There were 30 days after that date for objections to be lodged. “The timing of the application (over the holiday period) means that a number of residents would have missed the opportunity to make a submission to the ILGA regarding the application,” Councillor Gray told a meeting of Waverley Council.

The agreement is a further demonstration of Council’s commitment to addressing climate change, following the installation of rooftop solar panels on our buildings, switching street lights to LEDs, installing EV charging stations in the LGA and with the help of carbon offsets to balance our emissions, Council’s recent certification as carbon neutral.

She said the hostel was located in a residential area and “has previously been the subject of complaints to police regarding anti-social behaviour.” Greens councillor Dominic Wy Kanak further explored the boozy backpacker theme, telling the meeting there was a “documented history of violence and anti-social, alcohol-related behaviour attributed to that backpacker hostel and its neighbourhood vicinity.” Councillors agreed to a motion that Mayor Paula Masselos write to the ILGA objecting to liquor licences being granted to backpacker hostels.

Tree given temporary reprieve

A threatened backyard tree in Consett Ave, Bondi Beach, has been given a one year reprieve. Council placed a one year Tree Preservation Order on the century-old Mediterranean Oak, which faces destruction from a development under way next door. The developer has claimed that the tree sits on the border of the two properties, but the latest meeting of Waverley Council was told this was not the case. Meanwhile, Liberal councillors Sally Betts and Leon Goltsman are calling on the Council to give longer-term protection by adding the tree to its Significant Tree Register. The issue was raised in Council after the Nine Network’s A Current Affair carried a story on the Findlay family’s battle to save their tree.

Bright future for solar

Council will examine strategies for increasing solar uptake by homeowners following a call from newly-elected Councillor Tim Murray. Councillor Murray (Labor) said an uptake of 50% by non-solar households “would generate approximately 42,310 MWh per year, reduce our community greenhouse gas emissions by 6% and add an estimated $5,000,000 per year from household bill savings to the local economy.”

Fatal shark attack

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker says the community is in shock following the death of a man in a shark attack at Little Bay.

I wish to acknowledge that the start of 2022 has been a difficult couple of months for many. I also wish to applaud the community for remaining resilient, and for being proactive in getting third vaccine doses in arms.

COMMUNITY TOWN HALL MEETINGS

In 2022 I will be hosting monthly town hall meetings to discuss some of the important issues impacting our community. These meetings are a great way to provide a forum where ideas and solutions can be discussed.

“To lose someone to a shark attack like this is chilling” the Mayor said. “We are all in shock. Our entire community’s hearts go out to the family of the victim.” All Sydney beaches south of the harbour were closed for 24 hours after the death of the 35-year-old swimmer off rocks between Little Bay and Malabar. Council lifeguards on jet skis patrolled Little Bay and the Malabar Magic Ocean Swim, due to take place the following Sunday, was cancelled. The shark attack came just a fortnight after a father and son drowned after being swept off the rocks at Little Bay. Council is now conducting an urgent review of local water safety measures.

La Perouse parking ‘nightmare’

Independent councillor and former Mayor Noel D’Souza has called for a review of the lack of parking at La Perouse on weekends. He told a full meeting of council that visitors from outside the LGA were “bringing the area to a standstill as they look for parking.” Residents were having to wait for 30 minutes or more to access their properties. “It is a nightmare on weekends for locals and visitors alike,” he said. Councillor D’Souza called on Council to review the situation and allocate more resources to improve the amenity and access of La Perouse locals.

Greens councillor Philippa Veitch has urged Council to declare war on the rubbish dumpers who are making life hell for Kensington and Kingsford residents. She told a full meeting of Council: “In some cases waste management teams are being called to collect dumped rubbish from the same locations on a weekly basis if not more often, with new rubbish being dropped in these spots within hours of the last load being collected. The dumped rubbish is extremely unsightly, blocks footpaths and often smells.” Councillors agreed to her motion for a consideration of new measures to reduce dumped rubbish. One idea put forward by Councillor Veitch was the creation of facilities for residents to donate materials for re-use, or get broken items repaired.
