WENTWORTH LOWER HOUSE CANDIDATES P4 WHAT'S ON BAYSIDE P5
NOT A TIME TO TAKE CHANCES Democracy is like a bird that needs two wings to fly and works best when both wings are strong and equally balanced. It reflects the two characteristics of human nature; the need to pursue our own destiny and the responsibility to meet our social obligations.
It is not the natural order of things and requires constant effort to maintain balance, in the same way that a bike will fall over soon after you stop pedalling. “Democracy, observed Churchill, ”Means that when there’s a knock on the door at 3am, it’s probably the milkman.” For freedom is the certain companion of democracy and the most feared enemy of totalitarians. Australia is one of the most successful liberal democracies in the world and until 2019 lived in a world where the idea of democracy prevailed in Europe, the USA, Japan, India and a vast number of other countries. Until 2019 Australia’s democracy busied itself with finding the balance between growing the pie and sharing the pie; between social justice themes like climate change and commercial themes like mining that provide the wealth for the lifestyle we enjoy. The existence and health of democracy itself was not considered under threat. However, in June 2020 China stamped out democracy in Hong Kong and has vowed to retake Taiwan by force if necessary. Now, In 2022, Putin has invaded Ukraine and threatens its democracy and China has signed an agreement with the Solomon Islands that could eventually see it more easily able to threaten Australia’s democracy. The 2022 election is the first election in recent times where the concept of democracy is itself under threat and where foreign forces boldly state their aim to overthrow it. Once established totalitarianism spreads faster than we can imagine. In 1930, Germany was in the depths of depression, by 1942 it had bombed the UK and invaded France, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria,
Greece, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Yugoslavia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. It did not believe in democracy.
This is not the time for a “hung parliament” fragmented by deal making when every decision is being made, nor the time to have “too many cooks” in the democratic kitchen. We tried that recently and it didn’t work well. Instead, we need robust debate between two major established wings. We invite you to read about the Eastern Suburbs candidates on pages 4 and 11 and choose carefully the candidates you believe will most effectively build a strong Australia and protect it, and its democracy, in the more uncertain times ahead. There is much in this edition to remind us of what past generations have done to bequeath us the democracy we enjoy including the Paddington-Woollahra RSL Sub-Branch Anzac Sunday service on page 9 and Maroubra RSL Anzac march and service on page 12. In addition page 13 has details of the “Open Your Heart” exhibition that is raising funds to help those suffering from the war in Ukraine. On page 14 we can see how NSW Ports is actively supporting local community groups in the Eastern Suburbs how the Achilles Running Club assists those with disabilities to exercise. Both of these, and details of other community groups, show how lucky we are to live in harmony with each other.

better future for us all, a future that starts with bringing people peacefully together." www.greens.org.au/nsw/person/ dominic-wy-kanak
Dave Sharma is a well regarded foreign policy expert and former ambassador to Israel. He is of Indian heritage and born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1975, his family living in Sydney since 1979. An outstanding school student, he completed a Master of Arts at Cambridge University before completing a first class honours law degree. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and completed a Masters Degree in International Relations. He has since worked on the staff of former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, was the head of the International Division of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet while Julia Gillard was Prime Minister, and was appointed Ambassador to Israel by Labor Foreign Minister Bob Carr in 2013. In the 2019 election he recaptured the seat of Wentworth from independent Kerryn Phelps. He has worked tirelessly for the Wentworth electorate and was recently one of the Liberal members who crossed the floor to vote against the government on amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act related to the government's Religious Discrimination Bill, a crucial vote that eventually saw the legislation withdrawn. Dave has a proven ability to bring people together, solve problems and get things done. He understands the importance of a stronger economy and has wide international experience to help secure Australia’s defence and interests in the less certain times in which we now live. He lives in Paddington with his wife Rachel and their three young daughters. www.liberal.org.au/member/dave-sharma
TIM MURRAY, AUSTRALIAN LABOUR PARTY
Tim Murray, Labor’s candidate for Wentworth, is an economist, entrepreneur and a father of three young children. After winning an Australia-China Council scholarship, working for Austrade and developing businesses in China for 20 years, Tim and his wife Pauline Vaughan moved their family back to Sydney in 2013. They chose Tamarama, near where Tim was born in Waverley, to raise their kids. Tim continues to work as an analyst specialising in Australian mining and commodities, and Pauline works as an early childhood teacher in Paddington. Tim is an active member of his community, serving as President of the Tamarama Surf Lifesaving Club, where he introduced a new program for indigenous nippers and a safe swim outreach to migrants who haven’t had the opportunity to learn to swim. Tim joined the Labor Party because along with meeting the challenge of climate

For everyone, not just the elites and insiders. I want to discuss things other parties have forgotten or don't think matter. Nuclear energy, lower taxes and most of all, the government out of your life. If you want less government and more freedom like I do, we need to talk. www.votelewko.org
DANIEL LEWKOVITZ, LIBERAL DEMOCRATS
Born in Sydney to a post-war migrant family Daniel was educated at Sydney Boys High School and the University of Wollongong. His LinkedIn profile is a rare beacon of commercial reality and common-sense in a sea of virtue signalling and tribal politics. Daniel is a fierce critic of government interference in business and an environment which discourages small business at every level. He is a believer in free speech and a fair go as well as rewarding and supporting those who take risks and work hard to build the nation. “If you’ve never worked in a business, owned a business or run a business you’ve no credibility telling other people how to run theirs. Our country needs actual big ideas beyond windmills and very fast trains which won’t arrive in my lifetime”. Sadly, politics in this nation lacks talent. I am not a career public official or long-term party staffer waiting for 'his turn'. Nor am I funded by billionaires looking to grow their investments. I am a hardworking business owner with a family who, like you, wants to see Australia the way it should be.
DOMINIC WY KANAK, GREENS
Dominic Wy Kanak has served on Waverley Council representing Bondi Ward since 1999. He has been Honorary Native Title Consultant for Rockdale and District Landscape Heritage Committee (RDLHC), and past Executive Committee Convenor of the Indigenous Working Group of the UN Association of Australia (NSW Branch). Currently he is a Member of the Management Committee for the NSW Reconciliation Council and a former Director on the Board of Tranby Aboriginal College, as well as Vice President of the NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network. He was the Greens candidate at the 2018 Wentworth by-election and at the 2019 Federal election. As a First Australian, Dominic will play an influential role if elected as a federal MP in advancing the ‘Statement from the Heart’, implementing the Royal Commission into Black deaths in Custody recommendations. Dominic will advocate for Australia to commit to a national Treaty or Treaties to reframe how we care for Community; change the course of this country’s history and set us on a new path. He says "We cannot change the past, but we can build a
Allegra Spender’s background brings to the mix a range of business and politics. Her agenda is big on climate change. She aspires to a future when many more people will drive electric cars and one that has a sustainable and innovative economy. Her platform is very similar to that of the Labor Party including achieving at least a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030, stronger support for electric vehicles, action to improve resilience to floods, fire and drought, the introduction of a Federal ICAC and respectful treatment of women and LGBTIQ + people. She is the daughter Australian fashion icon Carla Zampatti, and her father John and grandfather Percy both served as Liberal MPs in the House of Representatives. Spender was also the chair of the Sydney Renewable Power Company that installed 520 kilowatts (700 hp) of solar panels on the roof of the International Convention Centre Sydney. She is married, lives in Sydney and has two children. She gives no advice on direction of preferences and declines to say whether she will support Labor, or the Liberals should she be elected. www.allegraspender.com.au
NATALIE DUMER, UNITED AUSTRALIA PARTY
Having migrated from the former USSR in the 70s, Natalie’s family relocated to the electorate of Wentworth where she has resided ever since. Her daughter was born in the electorate and goes to school there. She is extremely connected with her electorate, having worked as a dentist in Paddington for many years. Over the last two years Natalie has watched hard-working people struggle financially, mentally, and spiritually through these lockdowns. This has affected the unity of her community, increased mental illness and suicides, domestic violence and exacerbated the slow erosion of their freedoms. Natalie sees pandemic solutions being ignored by the major parties, resulting in countless unnecessary deaths. The United Australia Party plans to cap home loan interest rates at 3% for the next five years, pay down national debt with a 15% levy on coal and iron exports to China, oppose all “vaccine passports”, abolish the national cabinet, establish research into nuclear energy solutions, strengthen Australia’s defence, protect free speech from foreign techs giants and create jobs by processing Australian minerals in Australia. www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au/ candidate/natalie-dumer

St Mark’s Organ Scholar aims to inspire spiritual growth
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEARING WITH YOUR SMART PHONE
Organ Scholarship recipient, Stacey Yang Stacey Yang commenced her St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point Organ Scholarship in November 2021. She was thrilled to be given this opportunity, commenting: “The timing of the scholarship offer was amazing. After the Covid lockdowns and the interrupted performance opportunities, it has been wonderful to be able to play the organ publicly again and use my skill to benefit others.” Stacey is passionate about her music ministry: “Through playing beautiful music I hope to create not only positive feelings, but to enhance people’s experience of church. I want to encourage people to have a better faith, strength and hope.” Stacey is enjoying playing for the St Mark’s community and feels fortunate to be working with Director of Music Dr William Clark OAM and also the St Mark’s Choir. The Anglican church liturgy is another weekly highlight. Stacey has been playing the organ for 13 years. She was attracted to the organ because it is “a sophisticated, rare and inspirational instrument and because of the surrounding beauty (architecture) of the actual organ.” When asked what she enjoys most about playing the organ, Stacey shared: “The ability to explore new sounds and develop a massive and diverse repertoire.” In her opinion, being a good organist involves a diverse range of skills. In her case this involves musical skills (such as conducting, singing,
improvisation and the ability to work with a choir) and an understanding of language, religious and history disciplines. Stacey is currently completing her doctoral degree (organ performance and literature) at Eastman School of Music USA. She also works as a piano accompanist (collaborative pianist and opera repetiteur) and is the pianist for the Sydney Male Choir. In her spare time she enjoys reading, singing and language. Come and enjoy listening to Stacey’s organ playing during St Mark’s weekly 8am Choral Communion service. Stacey will also play at a scholarship recital at St Mark’s on May 22, 2022. Please visit www.stmarksdp.org for more details.

DAVE SHARMA FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH Upgrades to Redleaf Beach improves access for all
Redleaf Beach is one of the most idyllic spots in the eastern suburbs. But for people with limited mobility or disability, it can be one of the most difficult places to access. Since I was elected in 2019, I have fought for improved accessibility and disability access for our community facilities. That is why I am so pleased that I have been able to secure a federal government grant of $500,000 to upgrade the access to Redleaf Beach, and make it easier to reach for people with limited mobility. The upgrade will see the installation of a new lift, enhancing accessibility from New South Head Road, through the Blackburn Gardens, with wheelchair and pram access to the Redleaf Café area. In addition, all existing pathways to the beach will be widened. These crucial upgrades will increase accessibility to the promenade, the Redleaf Café, and the change rooms.
These upgrades will make Redleaf Beach safer and provide easier access for all members of the community. I have worked closely with Woollahra Council and Mayor Susan Wynne on this project, and I am glad to see it moving forward. It’s a win for our community. Only as the local member of a strong federal government, working closely with my local government colleagues, was I able to deliver this critical infrastructure.

Since my election, I have worked alongside disability-focused organisations that support the Wentworth community, such as the Holdsworth Community Centre, the Shepherd Centre and the Wayside Chapel. We know around one in six Australians, some 4.4 million in all, live with a disability. This is why, on a national scale, I have worked with my federal colleagues to secure a significant increase in funding for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The recent Budget includes an increase in funding for the NDIS, of $157.8 billion over the next four years. Ensuring the NDIS is fully-funded is critical for the 500,000 Australians who are participants in the NDIS, 1,131 of whom live in Wentworth. As your local federal member of parliament, I will continue to provide strong advocacy for our community and deliver real results and improvements to our community infrastructure.

The Sydney Jewish Museum turns 30 This year, the Sydney Jewish Museum turns 30. Three decades have brought about much expansion of the Museum, along with its collection, educational programs and exhibition spaces. Yet, the iconic Sydney institution remains just as committed to keeping alive the stories and lessons of its founding Holocaust survivors today, as it was on the day it opened its doors in 1992.

THE NEXT 30 YEARS
Looking to the future, the Museum has invested in cutting-edge technologies to ensure visitors can continue having meaningful experiences with Holocaust survivors. It recently embarked on a project bringing survivor stories to life using artificial intelligence. Visitors will soon be able to have a conversation with lifelike interactive Holocaust survivor biographies, ensuring survivor stories can continue to be told even when there are sadly no survivors left to tell their own.
BEFORE THERE WAS A MUSEUM
The Darlinghurst building that houses the Sydney Jewish Museum holds an interesting story in its own right. The NSW Jewish Memorial Hall building, known as the Maccabean Hall or the ‘Macc’, has been a fixture of Darlinghurst Road since it was officially opened on November 11, 1923 by Sir John Monash. Between the 1920s and 1990s, the classic inter-war building was the centre of Sydney’s Jewish community’s activities and functions, and would become crucial in rehabilitating and integrating Jewish refugees from Europe after World War II. This legacy would create the perfect site for a Jewish Museum to open.

In its first three decades, the Sydney Jewish Museum welcomed many generations of Sydneysiders through its doors. Local residents today regale of
In the second half of this year, the Museum will open a new feature exhibition showcasing the work of Sir Sidney Nolan. This will mark the first time his works related to the Holocaust appear publicly in Australia. The Museum will also launch its long-anticipated testimony exhibition, debuting the interactive survivor biographies, alongside 30 years of unseen Holocaust survivor footage.

‘Where the #%&! is God?’ Uniting Heart & Soul Woollahra invites you to join us on our new journey, exploring life’s big questions with our new podcast, Filthy Hope. Do you wonder where God is today? Why bad things happen to good people? Why people still chose faith and hope in the midst of the mess in our world? Well so do we! Raw, honest and no doubt controversial at times, we have conversations about God, faith, life and religion, and the grey spaces where they rub up against each other. Our first season dives straight into the grey with ‘Where the #%&! is God?’, asking the tough questions about even tougher situations like war, homelessness, addiction, poverty, depression and climate change. Our guests include Dr Keith Suter from ‘Sunrise’ and Rev Graham Long from Wayside Chapel.

FIGHTING OVERDEVELOPMENT
If you're feeling overwhelmed by what’s going on in Double Bay, it’s because it is overwhelming! There are more development applications, planning proposals and strategies than we have ever seen. And there are more in the pipeline. The Draft Double Bay Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy provides developers with greater height to encourage development (https://yoursay.woollahra. nsw.gov.au/doublebay). Its key features include a 50% height increase, bulky six storey buildings, excavation (increasing pressure on the water table and exposure to acid sulphate) resulting in the potential for hundreds of new dwellings and cars. It has been described by residents as a “misguided and destructive draft plan for the Double Bay Centre” transforming Double Bay into “Bondi Junction at the Bay!” with sun-starved pavements, dark alleyways and overcrowding as a result of too many additional residences. This is on top of the draft Cross Street Precinct Planning and Urban Design Strategy (https:// yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/crossstreet) where residents are waiting for the outcomes of the consultation last year. In fairness, one argument in favour of the strategies is that they re-set the height controls (which have been compromised by Council and Court decisions providing a precedent for breaches) through rule changes which will curtail further overdevelopment. But only if the amended rules are applied without variation. Residents and community groups have said that they have made submissions in relation to 32 applications in 2021 and 12 so far in 2022, which signifies an enormous amount of development in Double Bay. The most significant of these include 19-27 Bay Street (5 storeys), which is currently before the Land and Environment Court, corner of Transvaal Avenue and Cross Street (6 storeys) and 28-34 Cross Street (6 storeys).

and development application for the Cross Street Cinema Complex in Double Bay. And further add to this the Draft Edgecliff Commercial Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy (https://yoursay.woollahra. nsw.gov.au/edgecliff) which will deliver together with existing capacity a further 1000 new dwellings around the train station. One reason given for Council support of the increase in development is that we need to fulfill our housing targets imposed by the State Government of 800 new dwellings from 2016 to 2026. As at November 2021 Woollahra Council has approved or had constructed 889 new dwellings. The targets have been achieved with five more years of development to go! Other than getting used to living in a building site and never being able to park your car, residents can make a difference by getting involved. You have a say in your Council’s decisions and for your voices to be heard you need to make submissions or let your Councillors know what you think. Just as a local memorial service should be, the Anzac Day service held by the PaddingtonWoollahra RSL sub-branch at the renovated Oxford Street memorial fulfilled expectations of an intimate gathering with meaning. “Even pre-Covid, memorial services were small, and locals appreciated the intimacy and village atmosphere – though this Anzac Day numbers increased to around 70,” the service co-ordinator, Paddington-Woollahra RSL honourable Secretary Jacqueline McDonald, told Eastern Suburbs Life. Though small, the service’s importance to the local community was exemplified in its being a drawcard for many dignitaries: In attendance were new acting CEO of RSL NSW Scott Warr; Member for Wentworth Dave Sharma MP; and Paddington Ward Councillor at Woollahra Municipal Council Peter Cavanagh. In addition, there were representatives from neighbouring Victoria Barracks including Lieutenant Colonel Glenn Mackenzie and Lieutenant Colonel James Rogers – who delivered The Ode, and representing Fire & Rescue was Michael Wren, Duty Commander at Metropolitan East, plus a navy catafalque party. Also pleasing to see were pupils from local schools who attended and laid tributes or wreaths – including Paddington, Glenmore Park, and St Francis of Assisi plus there was representation from Sydney Boys High School army cadets, Cadet Corporal Wachsmann reciting the Prayer for Peace and Liberty.
Add to this that Council is developing the car park at Cross Street including new residential and a cinema (https://yoursay. woollahra.nsw.gov.au/cinema). Residents are waiting for the opportunity to comment during the public exhibition and consultation of both the planning proposal Councillor Luise Elsing
Providing the moving musical accompaniment was an army band –
a quintet which included a bugler and a vocalist, who delivered stirring renditions of the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems. As well as the honourable Secretary Jacqueline McDonald, who recited the poem Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, other subbranch members involved in the proceedings included the honourable Treasurer Andrew Shurety, Vice President John Unicomb, Committee Member Ahmad Mostafa – who recited the Prayer of Remembrance, while the Commemorative Address was given by Joe Kaplun OAM, KSJ, CMC, JP. The significance of 2022 as the 80th anniversary of war coming to Australia was addressed in the speech delivered by Paddington-Woollahra RSL President and MC Terrence Farley: “The Fall of Singapore was one of the worst military disasters to befall Australia, and one of the greatest defeats in British history,” Farley observed “… Over 130,000 troops, including 15,000 Australians, surrendered to the Japanese; 7000 of the captured Australian POWs would die before the war’s end.” Paula Towers The Paddington-Woollahra RSL’s next event is Walk a Mile in my Shoes on Thursday May 5 at 10am. Walk a lap of Centennial Park or ride your bike, scooter, roller blades, push a pram or just have a cuppa in support of veterans - free for all veterans and veteran family members. Further down the road is The Lord Dudley Hotel. The legendary old English pub, which dates from 1896. On the walls there are portraits of Les Darcy – the Australian boxer and folk hero who died in America in 1917, aged just 21. Before that, he had moved to Sydney, to focus on his boxing career, and while working a parttime job at the Lord Dudley, became engaged to Winnie O’Sullivan – the publican’s daughter at the time. His training ground was located where The Garden restaurant is now.
On the corner of Jersey Rd and Paddington St look down and you will see a plaque dedicated to Rudy Komon who was an art dealer, wine judge and connoisseur. He established one of the pre-eminent art dealerships in Sydney and introduced a new standard of relationship for the art dealer and artist.
On the corner of Jersey Rd and Moncur St is Moncur Street Uniting Church, a Victorian Gothic Congregational Church built in 1877, major benefactor was James Reading Fairfax. It ceased being used as a church in the 1980s and was fire-gutted in January, 1989. It was converted into apartments.

The courthouse closed in 1988 although the police station remained open.

I turn left onto Oxford St, passing Davies Reserve and then pass the rundown Diamond Horseshoe Club, which lies in a state of disrepair. In the early years of World War II, nightclubs featured local stars such as the burlesque performer ‘Lea Sonia’, who would appear in drag at the Club.

MEET THE CANDIDATES FOR KINGSFORD SMITH Five candidates are competing to represent Kingsford Smith in the upcoming federal election. The seat is held by Labor’s Matt Thistlethwaite, who won almost 60% of the vote in the last election after secondary preferences. Here is some information on Matt and the other candidates.
MATT THISTLETHWAITE, AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY
Member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite has Labor blood running through his veins. Both his father Bruce and grandfather Ralph were union officials. And Matt has been a member of the Australian Labor Party since the age of 22. He went on to occupy high-ranking positions within the union movement while studying law and was elected to the Senate. He has been representing the set of Kingsford Smith since 2013. Matt grew up in Maroubra and has been surfing there since the age of eight. He is also a SCUBA diver. “I feel fortunate to live on one of the most magical coastlines in the world,” he says. “We need stronger action on climate change and environmental policies so we can protect our pristine coastline for our kids.” He sees the local community in Kingsford Smith as another precious resource. “We have a diverse mix of ages and different cultures, which enriches our local community,” he says. “Plus we have fantastic institutions and community groups.” Matt has been a very active campaigner against the proposed cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay and the Matraville incinerator plan. He has also campaigned against plans for offshore gas drilling which could threaten the eastern beaches and Botany Bay. “These are proposals that will do enormous environmental damage, not to mention the social harm they would inflict on the community.” He also pledges to protect Medicare, stand up for better schools and a stronger TAFE and fight overdevelopment.
GRACE TAN, LIBERAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA
Grace Tan is a real estate agent in Pyrmont but lives locally. She was shy about being interviewed, but here is some biographical information supplied by the Liberal Party:
“Having immigrated from China 17 years ago, Grace lives locally in Kingsford Smith and is proud to call our area home. “Grace has a track record of fighting for our community. Whether as part of a grass roots campaign against the Matraville incinerator or as a volunteer with Sydney Children’s Hospital and Starlight Foundation, Grace is known as someone who works for our community. “Grace will fight to improve local roads and transport, and ensure our community has access to world class hospitals and healthcare. As part of the Morrison Liberal Team, Grace will deliver a strong economy and stronger future for Kingsford Smith.” Here is Grace’s life philosophy, as set out on the website of the real estate company she works for: “I never think that something is too challenging, I just do it. This is partly due to the way I grew up. When I was a child in China, we didn’t have many things. If there was an issue, we just had to deal with it and get it done. I believe everything at work and in life has a solution.”
STUART DAVIS, GREENS
Other policies include adding dental treatment to Medicare and raising government support payments above the poverty line. He wants to see humane treatment of refugees currently being held in detention. In addition, Stuart is a passionate environmentalist who urges responsible action on climate change – and the rejection of the Matraville incinerator plan. “I am deeply concerned about the proposed incinerator’s proximity to homes,”
questions to head office in Brisbane. So I signed off from the testy Darrin and did what he suggested, emailing One Nation HQ in Brisbane with some questions, one of which was that query about the distance between Rosebud and the Sydney seat he is standing for. I never received a reply.
ANTHONY TAWAF, UNITED AUSTRALIA PARTY
His environmental concerns take in a global view. “I just can’t sit back any longer and watch this beautiful planet being sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed,” he says.
DARRIN MARR, ONE NATION
Musician and choir director Stuart Davis is running for the Greens on a platform of affordable housing and scrapping of the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS). “I’m advocating a sort of back to the future policy,” says Stuart, who lives in Coogee. “Let’s go back to when uni and TAFE were free. I’ve got two daughters who are now lumbered with massive HECS debts. They and their friends have this looming shadow hanging over them.” HECS debts compound the housing affordability problems faced by our young people. “Housing costs in this area have gone crazy,” he says. “The Greens have a policy advocating the building of low-cost homes which will be ownership-shared, enabling people to remain living in the communities they grew up in.”
Darrin Marr is a real estate agent in Rosebud, on the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne. Rosebud being a long way from Randwick (almost 800 kms away, in fact), it seemed appropriate to ask Darrin “What are you doing running for the seat of Kingsford Smith?” However, Darrin did not want to answer that or any other questions when I phoned him at 11.20 on a Saturday morning. “I’ve only just had breakfast!” he complained. After I apologised for interrupting his digestion, he told me to submit a list of
When I phoned UAP candidate Anthony Tawaf, he told me he was busy working on something and did not want to be distracted from it. I would have to send him an email. Mindful that I could be heading down the same fruitless path I had found myself on with the One Nation candidate, I managed to squeeze in a couple of questions. Where does he live? “Rosebery,” he said. What is his professional background? “I’m qualified in marketing and administration,” he replied. And that is all the information we can share with you about Anthony Tawaf, because he never replied to my emails. When I followed up with him by phone, it seems that he hung up on me. Or perhaps it was just a faulty connection. Tony Maguire

A pair of mounted police and 20-piece pipe band led a march from Maroubra Rd to the appropriately-named Anzac Pde in an early commemoration to our war heroes. Marching behind police and kilted musicians were ex-service personnel and their families, with local lifeguards bringing up the rear of the procession. At the cenotaph opposite The Juniors Maroubra, there were speeches, prayers and more music, with a bugler playing the last post, a piper’s solo lament and a stirring rendition of 'I Am Australian' by singer Robin Loau. Wreaths were laid alongside the monuments commemorating our war dead. And tribute was paid to the Kokoda Track heroes of ‘Maroubra Force,’ who “fought a gutsy,

The importance of the ceremony was summed up by Maroubra RSL branch President Colin Flatters, OAM, as he gave the Anzac Recitation: “That men might walk in honour and peace/That freedom might throughout the world survive/ Remembering, for this they gave their lives/ We bow our heads in homage and pride.” Held on April 10, the ‘Anzac Sunday’ march and memorial service kicked off the local Anzac Day calendar. There were further services, marches and the odd two-up game around the eastern suburbs on the actual day, Monday April 25.

NSW PORTS LAUNCHES COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM FOR 2022 NSW Ports is a proud and active member of the communities in which we operate. Our community investments help make the Eastern Suburbs a better place to live, work, learn and play by enhancing well-being, education opportunities, sustainability and the environment. Together, we are building strong, inclusive and thriving communities.
Outside of schools, Caring Kids used their grant to support young carers who’ve taken on caring for a family member with a disability, by delivering toy boxes packed with games and books.
NSW Ports has now opened applications for our 2022 Community Grants program. We’re keen to support community groups and not-for-profits with innovative project ideas, programs or initiatives that promise to make the Eastern Suburbs an even better place to be.
We’ve helped the locals behind the Lever Street Community Garden, in Rosebery, to build an extra garden bed for residents, while Marine Rescue’s Botany Port Hacking Unit used their community grant to train 30 new volunteer radio dispatchers.
Our inaugural Community Grants Program in 2021 supported a wonderful variety of local groups doing great work in and for the communities around Port Botany. Our grants helped Banksmeadow Public School upgrade its reading resources for kids and provided iPads and laptops for students at La Perouse Public School to improve digital literacy.
La Perouse Netball Club’s programs, funded by their community grant, are encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players to join the sport, with more First Nations players now on the court and joining coaching clinics.
Randwick Petersham Cricket Club directed their grant towards a community outreach program to engage with young people, the elderly and disadvantaged community members. These are just a snapshot of the 24 NSW Ports Community Grant recipients in 2021, which also included community groups in and around Port Kembla and our intermodal centres at Enfield and Cooks River.
NSW Ports is 80% owned by Australian superannuation funds, representing more than six million Australians. Our ports and intermodal facilities operate 24/7 and are critical to the economic prosperity of NSW, contributing $13.6 billion annually to Gross State Product and supporting about 65,000 jobs. About 33% of employees at Port Botany live locally, so there’s every chance you know someone who works there. So, in many ways, I like to think that we all share a stake in Port Botany and the
communities who live and work nearby. We’re immensely proud to invest in the local communities who invest in us, and our 2022 Community Grants Program will do even more to support people and groups who are making a difference. Visit www.nswports.com.au/grants to learn about our community grants program, or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ nswports to find out more about NSW Ports. More than a walk in the park Every Sunday morning a group of people in bright yellow T-shirts meet to walk or run around the Royal Botanic Garden.
They’re members of Achilles, a 26-year-old volunteer organisation that assists adults with disabilities to exercise, matching them with volunteer guides in weekly training sessions and at running and walking events. For member Jenny Abela, resident of Little Bay and formerly Maroubra, Achilles means more than just a regular Sunday activity. Jenny, who is blind and a champion golfer, is still able to walk 18 holes with ease despite her 81 years. ‘And that’s because Achilles means fitness’, Jenny says. ‘I have my regular walk with well-trained volunteers. They’re so tuned to my stride. And they point things out along the way, enabling me to enjoy the beautiful environment, and do so safely.’ Jenny adds, ‘Achilles means freedom, too. Freedom to choose the type of exercise walk or run. And to travel to other places, take part in events – I’ve been to the Orange running festival a few times, for example. We can also take part in other
activities: bushwalking, swimming, mountain climbing.
‘And, of course, Achilles means friendship,’ Jenny continues. ‘It’s the only group in the city where people who are blind can come together and discuss their particular issues – we share tips on getting around, managing in our homes and in this sighted world. And at our gatherings before and after training sessions I’ve also got to know our volunteers, and made deep friendships across the wider community.’ Ellen Howe from South Coogee has very limited vision and is hard of hearing and largely wheelchair bound. But being part of Achilles has made it possible ‘to see, hear and move better’. ‘Before I started with Achilles seven years ago, I was in my chair all the time. Now I can walk half the distance on my own, from the Domain through the Garden and back,’ she says. ‘And I’ve taken part in events – fun runs, the Mother’s Day Classic, Parkruns.’ Ellen revels in the chance to be out and about in nature. ‘I love being in the Harbour gardens and near the water.’ And now she feels safer in a crowd: ‘I’ve always had trouble with crowds, found it hard to tell the direction people are
Ellen in the garden walking. But my Achilles guides tell me when there’s someone coming, help me adjust to changes in the road surface and warn me about obstacles. And being with Achilles gives me the chance to meet different people, go different places.’ Meet different people and go different places with Achilles.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS BY SYDNEY'S SHULE Sydney’s Shule creates vital projects for a range of important community needs. Its mission is to help those wherever and whenever they need it. “We’re doing our part in creating a kinder world – connecting people from all walks of life to offer an opportunity to give to others,” says Rabbi Chaim Levy of Sydney's Shul. Aiming to address humanitarian causes for those with similar objectives: “We believe the core of Jewish values begins with recognising the contribution we can make to our world, and making it happen,” explains Levy. More like a club than an institution, Sydney's Shule is inclusive. All are welcome and many non-Jewish as well as non-religious people are involved – with participation growing quickly. Since Sydney’s Shule was established barely a year ago in March 2021, over 150 articles have covered its progress and programs. Exemplifying its popularity within the general community, within only a short time,
an astonishing number of people have become involved in its projects. Though this involvement has been mainly online, due to Covid restrictions – “we can see we’ve reached 50,000 people,” reports Levy. Such projects aim to help individuals and communities in every stage of their lives, ranging from establishing a Teen Club – to nurture a sense of belonging – to a Social Gold Club for seniors offering meaningful programs in which to learn and reconnect.
A certificate of appreciation from Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick presented to Rabbi Levy (right) from Sydney’s Shule, and supporter Western Sydney Wanderers player Tomer Hemed.
Very popular is the Gifts Of Light project which involves visiting hospital patients across Sydney to bring comfort. Toy drives see many, especially children, enthusiastically helping to pack charming gift bags for hospitalised kids. “We’ve given out gifts for close to 20,000 children in hospitals in the past six months,” estimates Levy.
supporter, Western Sydney Wanderers soccer player Tomer Hemed – who Levy describes as “an awesome guy”. Hemed is one of a number of well-regarded, high-profile individuals who’ve been keen to assist in these projects.
As part of Chanukah celebrations at the end of last year, thousands of gifts were distributed to children in Australian hospitals resulting in Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, awarding a special certificate of appreciation to Levy as well as strong Sydney's Shule
Recent project SHOW UP! For Mental Health, held on April 10, a one-day online seminar aiming to build better mental health, attracted top professionals from all over the world. In addition, Australian PM Scott Morrison sent a message of support.
“Every person has the chance to make a change for good — no matter how big or small. Whether for a child in hospital, a senior, a new mum, a teen or anyone you feel passionate about helping,” Levy says. “Anyone who wants to be part of these projects is welcome.” Paula Towers

Boot Factory restoration reaches one-year milestone Waverley Councils’ restoration of the much loved Boot Factory building in Spring St, Bondi Junction, is only a few months away from completion, with demolition of the external courtyard area now complete. A temporary roof structure has been installed over the building to allow internal structural and fit-out works to commence. The Council is transforming the former shoe making factory, and the adjacent Mill Hill Centre, into a civic innovation hub of the future. The Boot Factory restoration will support innovation and ensure Waverley keeps pace with the knowledge economy. Restoration works at the Boot Factory began in April 2021 and are expected to be completed in late June, weather and COVID-restrictions permitting. Works at the Mill Hill Centre are expected to be completed in July. Our upgrade includes: • Both buildings will be connected, providing an opportunity to share facilities including the lift.
• A café at the Spring St entry to the precinct with street and courtyard presence.
• Upgraded Community and Seniors Centre Flexible community spaces on the ground floor and top floor of the Boot Factory and the Mill Hill Community Centre. • Upgrades to Norman Lee Place. Our head contractor, Lloyd Group has stripped the Boot Factory building completely and temporary structural works have been installed. The Mill Hill Community Centre has also been internally stripped with fit out and services rough-in commencing. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Llyod Group and the Council’s major projects team are working hard to complete works following weather delays, close contact isolation requirements and supply chain issues. “Despite these challenges, the project is progressing well and our transformation of the Boot Factory building, Mill Hill Centre and Norman Lee Place is taking shape,” Mayor Masselos said. “Our Community Strategic Plan notes the community’s wish for Waverley to be a
“knowledge-driven, innovative and digitally connected community”, and the Boot Factory helps fulfil this by providing opportunities to support innovation and ensure we keep pace with the knowledge economy. “The Boot Factory’s Innovation and Knowledge Hub will be a place to nurture ideas to further transform Waverley into a ‘smart city’ of the future. Steering Group has, and will continue, to assist in guiding the development of the Hub and its policies and practices.” The Boot Factory was completed in 1892 by William Sidaway and Son and was last restored by Council in 1986. It has been vacant since 2007, and in 2013, Council undertook significant remedial structural works to ensure the stability of the building until an alternative use could be found.

The long lazy days of summer have disappeared for now, but don’t let this be an excuse for outdoor play to disappear also! … Robyn Monro Miller gets you ready for a playful winter. For many of us as the days get shorter and the leaves turn into a blaze of autumnal hues, we retreat into our homes and our technology. Our Australian way of life is heavily influenced by long summer days and yet short winter days are just as important for children’s healthy development. It is recommended all children from 12 months old, enjoy at least 60 minutes of vigorous activity each day. This requirement does not change with the seasons, yet often is replaced by more sedentary activities in winter Scandinavian countries have long excelled at ensuring their children play outside in more extreme conditions than we ever experience, yet Australia tends to lag behind in embracing the benefits of play in chilly conditions. However, there is a growing body of research on the benefits of outdoor play for children. Fostering not just healthy physical development, but brain development including reduced rates of obesity and myopia in children exposed to daily doses of outdoor play. Outdoor play allows a child to engage in more gross motor movement than indoor play. Running, jumping, squatting, rolling, climbing are all incidental movements that children engage in when using an outdoor space. The impact of a healthy dose of
THE BENEFITS OF A PLAYFUL WINTER outdoor play also improves sleep quality and duration, as well as reduce stress levels. The myth that cold weather is bad for you has also been debunked, with research showing increases in metabolic function and heightened brain activity. Playdates in the fresh air with friends are a far healthier option for reducing transmission of cold and flu bugs than playing at home. Natural exposure to sunlight during the winter months boosts the immune system and helps fight infection. In fact, of critical importance for healthy immune function and bone development is Vitamin D.
The outdoor space also stimulates the senses through smell, touch and taste and spatial awareness. Imagine rain drops on tongues, wind in the hair, the freedom of flying a kite and the challenge of navigating the risk of puddles and mud. These are just some of the experience’s children can engage in when exposed to the myriad of environmental changes caused by weather. This multisensory experience stimulates problem solving and language development. The outdoors provide a rich environment for learning new concepts, unable to be replicated indoors and should not be hidden away from but embraced as healthy part of childhood.
There is a Nordic saying when it comes to play “There is no such thing as inappropriate weather just inappropriate clothing.” So make the time to fish out the gumboots and warm jacket and head outdoors… I do believe there is a puddle waiting just for you!

Nominations open for literary award
Racism not welcome signs
The Nib Award is Waverley Council’s annual celebration of the best Australian writing in any genre, covering both fiction and nonfiction. It is the only major national literary award of its kind presented by a local council. Previous winners include Tim Low, Helen Garner, Christopher Koch, Clare Wright, Gideon Haigh and Rebecca Giggs.
“We will not accept discrimination in our culturally diverse community,” said Mayor Dylan Parker, who led the initiative.
Attention local writers – nominations for the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award are now open.
Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, said Waverley Council was immensely proud to be continuing to offer this Award and provide direct support to Australian writers. “Waverley Council recognises the role that arts and culture play in defining our community and during this period of recovery from COVID, we remain committed to supporting emerging and established writers through the Nib Award,” Mayor Masselos said. The award is open to works published between June 30, 2021 and July 1, 2022. There is a first prize of $20,000, six shortlist prizes of $1000 each and a $2500 People’s Choice Award. Winners are decided by an independent panel of three judges. Nominations close Monday June 20, 2022. For more information, visit www.waverley.nsw.gov. au/nib
Traffic plan may not be Birrell of laughs for drivers
Birrell St in Waverley is a nice straight stretch of road where drivers are tempted to put their foot down, especially if they are heading down the hill, the blue jewel of the ocean shimmering in the distance. Forget all that. Well, you’ll have more time to admire the view, but you’ll be driving more slowly. Waverley Council is going to make it a 40k zone and narrow the road with traffic calming measures. It’s part of a council vision to enforce a 40 limit throughout most of the LGA.
Helping to get drivers to slow down will be pedestrian refuges and other “intersection improvement” measures. These will narrow traffic from two to one lane at the intersections of Birrell St with Park Pde and Dickson St. But a report tabled at a meeting of Waverley’s Traffic Committee claimed these measures would have “no significant impact” on traffic flow.
Signs declaring racism is not welcome will be installed in prominent locations across Randwick beach locations.
The signs will be installed on beachside poles at Maroubra, Coogee, Clovelly and La Perouse. Mayor Parker said: “Our beaches are proposed as appropriate locations for the signs as they have a high number of visitors (both local and non-local) and pedestrian traffic.” In addition, signs will go up in a number of locations at the University of NSW, which will be involved in the campaign launch.
Maroubra Surf Club upgrade
A new $10m clubhouse is planned for Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club. Randwick Councillors unanimously endorsed a four-year funding strategy to knock down and rebuild the surf club. The plan will be subject to 40% of the budget being covered by grants and fundraising. Maroubra SLSC is one of Australia’s oldest clubs and was founded in 1906. Membership has grown by a quarter in the past five years, with the majority of new sign-ups being young people. Design work will now commence on the project, with construction estimated to commence 2024/25 subject to Council obtaining the additional funds.
Hi everyone, My office has been conducting online community town halls over the last few months on a variety of issues, including public transport, planning and healthcare. Our next online community town hall will be on the topic of education, and I am interested to hear your experiences of our education system, whether that be in childcare, primary or high school, or tertiary education. In the last few years, members of the community have contacted my office about issues of underfunding, teacher shortages, reliance on demountable classrooms and wait times to see school counsellors. These issues are incredibly important to me, and I have been calling on our Government for fairer funding for our public schools to help address these issues. To ensure your voice is being heard, I invite everyone to come to our forum so you can voice your experiences and concern. I will be joined by NSW Labor Shadow Minister for Education and Ealy Childhood Learning, Prue Car, MP. The meeting will be held online, on Monday June 6 from 6pm to 7pm. This meeting is a great opportunity to raise any concerns you may have, to share your experience with our education system and shine a light on any areas in which you would like to see change. To register, please scan the QR code below or head to the link: https://marjorieoneill.com.au/community/community-town-hall-meetings/
Aboriginal artworks for Heffron Centre
Maroubra’s newest community sporting facility the Heffron Centre – currently under construction – will feature a unique local Aboriginal artwork inspired by the sea life and cultural practices of the local Gadigal and Dharawal clans. Indigenous artists Carmen Glynn-Braun and Dennis Golding have developed the concept that translates the cultural practice of mullet fishing into a unique artwork that will wrap around the entrance wall and interior glass walls of the Heffron Centre. In addition, a sculptural mural featuring stingrays and representations of the coastline will feature as a large-scale artwork on the external southern side of the building. Construction on the Heffron Centre is well underway and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.
I look forward to seeing you there!
