The Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme

Let's share a dream How is that word “democracy” to be interpreted? Asked Churchill.

“My idea of it is that the plain, humble, common man, just the ordinary man* who keeps a wife and family, who goes off to fight for his country when it is in trouble, goes to the poll at the appropriate time, and puts his cross on the ballot paper showing the candidate he wishes to be elected to Parliament — that he is the foundation of democracy. And it is also essential to this foundation that this man or woman should do this without fear, and without any form of intimidation or victimisation. He marks his ballot paper in strict secrecy, and then elected representatives and together decide what government, or even in times of stress, what form of government they wish to have in their country. If that is democracy, I salute it. I espouse it. I would work for it.” He said it in London, in House of Commons on Dec 8, 1944, shortly before he was defeated by Labour leader, Clement Attlee in the 1945 general election that took place after the end of World War 2. Many people at the time thought it was unfair, but democracy is not about rewarding past deeds, but about choosing a course for the future, as it was on May 21, 2022, in Australia. Neither elections nor horse races are won by pointing to past victories, but by creating a vision, working out how to achieve it and showing people how to work towards it. Where was Kennedy’s "I believe that this Nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth”, or Australia’s equivalent, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme, a project that lasted from 1949 to 1974 and employed more than 100,000 people from over 30 countries? Instead the election was won by the party that promised “A better future” (but didn’t quite tell us how it would get there) and lost

by the party that said “Look what we’ve done for you”. Given that, it’s no surprise that both major parties lost followers to a growing group of Independents. The “Bird of Democracy”, mentioned in last month’s editorial, cannot fly when it keeps both its wings by its side. So for the next election let’s have at least one dream for the future, not a childish “My dad’s stronger than your dad” tussle, but a dream that inspires. Maybe even a new scheme, as bold as that of Snowy Mountains Hydro. On a smaller scale, Eastern Suburbs Life seeks to offer inspiration to our readers on the following pages including “How to shop for a Man” on P3, the Walk for a Cure on P4, which has raised over $5.7 million for cancer research, the Winter Wine & Cheese party being held on July 16 at 15 Cross St, Double Bay P8, Holistic Learning and Fabulous Recycled Designer and Vintage Clothing on P9, a French Knighthood for community leader Noel D’Souza on P11 and a Trek for Refugees on P15.

Walk for a Cure supports the eastern suburbs Over 450 walkers descended on Robertson Park in Watsons Bay on May 5 to begin the inaugural Westpac Walk for a Cure.

Since 2017, the Westpac Tour has raised $5.7 million for vital cancer research, support and prevention initiatives and this year (up till May 25) it had raised 1.18m – including around $450,000 on the day of the walk – and well on the way towards this year’s goal of $1.25m. Walk for a Cure is one of the many activities of umbrella organisation Tour de Cure, which co-ordinates cycling as well as walking and other fundraising events with sponsors. “We were really thrilled that so many people decided to join from Westpac and partners in the inaugural year (of this event),” Tour de Cure Marketing Manager Laura Prestontold Eastern Suburbs Life. “And it was great to see the team coming together behind a common cause. " The Westpac walk was open to the corporation and anyone from the wider organisation, their sponsors and partners.

The walkers caught a ferry earlier from Darling Harbour to Watsons Bay then, from the park, walked through the eastern suburbs via Parsley Bay and Rose Bay to Woollahra Sailing Club for morning tea, past Rushcutters Bay then onto Woolloomooloo, before finishing at Darling Harbour.

Another altruistic benefit of these events are donations to local charities. “Every time we do an event – whether riding or walking – we give $10,000 to a local charity,” Preston advised. On the morning of this event, $10,000 was donated to eastern suburbs charity Life Force Cancer Foundation. “Life Force offers a counselling service and support for people who’ve gone through cancer treatment and living with cancer,” Preston said. “For those suffering mentally, emotionally, re-adjusting to what they’ve been through." Life Force Cancer Foundation was set up by local Jilly Pascoe in 1993, when there was little support, and with Caro Jonas this organisation has grown and now offers an integrated supportive care system for all those affected by cancer.

Since being established in 2007, partners, fundraisers have helped Tour de Cure raise over $75 million, fund more than 563 cancer

projects and contribute to 55 significant cancer breakthroughs. Paula Towers

IS YOUR HEARING 'AVERAGE' FOR YOUR AGE? A graph of hearing is called an audiogram, and shows how loud a sound needs to be (decibel) according to pitch (frequency).

HEARING LEVEL

The WHO recently released audiograms for women and men, showing average degrees of hearing loss between 30 and 80 years of age. As we age the ear 'wears out', and this is particularly evident for high frequency sounds as we age. This is shown on the audiograms as a more steeply sloping drop in hearing thresholds on the right side of the graph. To find out if your hearing is above or below 'average' contact Edgecliff Hearing and obtain a copy of your own audiogram. The Builders of Modern Australia

1852

NEWS 7

2022

THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OVER 170 YEARS In this article we explore the remarkable changes within St Mark’s parish over the time since the European settlement of the Eastern Suburbs. One of the great challenges for an historian is the velocity of change in society since the Age of Enlightenment and the impact of the Industrial Revolution. It is hard to imagine the transformation of modern Australia in the past 170+ years, although for one born in Melbourne in the 1940’s it was somewhat possible to relate to the lives of ordinary people in the 1800’s. I can personally recall milk, bread, the newspaper and even ice being delivered daily to domestic homes by horse and cart. We had no television; and, of course communications were by relatively new inventions of phone and telegram and very expensive over distance. Shops were in high streets and supermarkets were yet to be thought of. It was therefore easier to relate to horses and unmade roads and the perilous existence of people before antibiotics and modern medicines and birth control.

Our photos (right) are intended to contrast the incredible difference between the lives of Blanche Mitchell in 1852 and a young woman of today. How the world has changed since St Mark’s was first licensed in 1847. It is only by travelling to a place like Ku-ring-gai National Park that one can imagine what Darling Point would have looked like before the timber cutters supplying the new settlement denuded the peninsula. Indeed, the whole of the current electorate of Wentworth was only really traversable by a rough road running along the Oxford Street ridge to South Head. There was one track known as Captain Piper’s Road that ran from Oxford Street along what is now Jersey Road to Ocean Street and down through Double Bay to Point Piper. Indeed, after 1827 this and a surrounding 1135 acres of land (comprising 70% of the Municipality of Woollahra, including Woollahra, Bellevue Hill, Rose Bay and Point Piper) was to become the property of the Cooper family by 1847 and remained largely intact until 1886. It was known as the Cooper Estate. A tiny remnant of this estate (the 35-acre Cooper Park) remains today after being gifted to the State in 1913 by Sir William Cooper.

MANAGING YOUR HEALTH AND WEIGHT Being overweight is not an uncommon problem in Australia. With many maintaining a sedimentary lifestyle and having less time to look after themselves, obesity has almost reached every household. In 2017-2018, one in three Australian adults was obese. Add to that the increased length of isolation and staying at home that people have been doing to fight the current coronavirus, more people than ever before are likely to be overweight. To deal with this, there needs to be an effective measure. Eating properly and finding time for exercise is important. But starting can be hard, especially if you find getting back onto your feet is hard on your feet.

We must remember that there was no income tax in Australia until 1915 after federation and therefore there were no funds for the public financing of hospitals, schools, essential services such as electricity, gas, water and sewerage. Many of these activities were funded by churches and individuals and rudimentary municipal bodies, such as the city of Woollahra, generally incorporated after 1860.

the men. The life of a woman was very much under the protection of the man, as she was expected to be engaged in raising the children and running the households. Families commonly consisted of 10-15+ children of whom usually about one third would be unlikely to survive to adulthood. Things have certainly changed in our modern times!

The benefits to participants in community sport are well known, including the ability of young people to safely develop motor skills and develop physical fitness protocols that will last a lifetime. Rushcutters Bay however, due to overcrowding in other anchorages closer to the fledgling city of Sydney, was to become a small but vital part of Australia’s maritime history with the Australian Naval Brigade (now the RAN) headquarters officially being based in the bay in1901. Dredging and land reclamations commenced and the building of jetties and sea walls along the foreshore provided a safer place for small and medium craft for the new navy. Slipways and careening points were established too and a small private maritime industry sprung up around the bay. Currently the Drill Hall and RANSA building are all that remains of the original base which was decommissioned and the land handed back to the public in 1979.

Looking fabulous in Recycled Designer and Vintage If you're looking for recycled designer vintage then Face by KB is the shop for you. This consignment shop is full of treasure, fun, love and happiness and is located at 71 Bayswater Rd, Rushcutters Bay. Kerry is very proud of the amazing space that she created to make women feel welcome and beautiful. Academic Excellence, the tutoring centre in the heart of Double Bay, is recognisable for its striking orange storefront and its pristine reputation across some of the most reputable schools in the city. Founder and long-term educator Alida Markovics stated that “it was always my dream to create a learning centre that would embrace a holistic approach and really encourage children to develop a love of learning”. This mission has been realised through the Academic Excellence centre. Over the last 39 years, Alida has been a Senior HSC marker, a K-12 school principal, and an educator. Her extensive experience across all aspects of academics fosters a culture of motivation and cohesion within the lively shop. A study space suitable for students aged from as young as four to year 12s, Alida welcomes every student regardless of learning style, skills or previous academic achievements. Her dedication to ensuring every student’s success is exemplified in the testimonies by parents whose children’s school career has been altered by the unique learning approach taken by Academic Excellence. The tutoring centre is defined by a cohesive, experienced group of tutors. Teaching subjects from school preparation to extension maths and English, all tutors are hand-picked by Alida to provide the most beneficial experience for your child. Speaking about her tutors, Alida stated, “for me personally, I love the buzz and energy that my young tutors provide in my centre. They are committed they are professional they are experts in their field they teach they are my equal in knowledge and devotion”. Tutors range from those who graduated in 2021 to experienced certified teaching professionals. A primary goal for the institute has always been to maximise the tutoring

experience. In selecting tutors based on how they will bond with the student, tutors and students foster a relationship promoting academic success and positive habits. Furthermore, the centre accommodates home-schooling students whose abilities don’t necessarily fit into the clean-cut methods of teaching promoted in schools. These programs follow the state-issued curriculum whilst providing a flexible environment for all students. The testimonials from parents speak for themselves. Parents who “attribute a large portion of their success during the HSC to Alida”, others who commend the tutors for being “professional, encouraging and flexible”, and “role models who inspired confidence, independence, structure and motivation”. With a unique mix of holistic and traditional teaching methods, Academic Excellence offers various services from Speech pathology, Counselling services, occupational therapy, medical practitioners and adult education. The tutors and Alida alike are committed to the students and provide holiday lessons, workshops, and any other services a student might need. Alida is passionate about aiding children who have special needs or learning difficulties in the school system and ensures a welcoming and positive attitude to all students. The programs developed understand no two students are the same in their attitude and ability to learn. Able to adapt to the unpredictable conditions the last two years have had, Academic Excellence offers services such as zoom lessons should COVID impact students or tutors, as well as for long-distance students who still wish to engage in interpersonal learning.

It's been a long strange road for all of us never knowing what the next week will bring. I feel we are now able to feel safe and happy and enjoy our days in our beautiful city.

In ESL June Ed 42, My walk ventures down Underwood St, Paddington and surrounding streets.

1

I begin my walk on corner of Oxford St and Underwood St at Juniper Hall, a Georgian house built in 1824 for Robert Cooper (1777-1857) - the name was changed to Ormond House by Judge Kinchela when he leased it in 1831. Cooper leased the house to the Society for the Relief of Destitute Children from 1852-1858, and after his death in 1857 and that of his wife Sarah in 1863, the house was sold to John E Begg in 1876. Begg then sold the house as part of his subdivision of the Olive Bank Estate in 1878. The house continued to be leased. It was eventually purchased by the Government in 1885. In 1924, it was then was sold to Joe Gardiner who converted the house into a number of flats known as Hillside Flats who built a row of six shops in the front garden facing Oxford St. After it was purchased by Avrom Investments an employee of the firm, Elizabeth Randall, became interested in the history of the house and restored its original name Juniper Hall. In 1981 the first of a series of proposals to develop the site was put forward and a campaign to save the house was mounted by the Paddington Society and the National Trust. The Trust purchased the house in 1984, the shops were demolished and the house restored. Juniper Hall featuring a Museum of Childhood opened its doors to the public in 1988. The Trust later ceased occupancy of the house, leasing it to private businesses, and in 2012 the house was sold to the Moran family.

2

Walking further along Underwood St at Bennetts Grove Ave, there are the remains of a high stone wall which runs from Union St and formed the southern border the Broughton Estate also the border of the original Underwood grant. Bradley Hall (demolished) was a single storey Colonial Georgian house, and was built in 1845 for Thomas Broughton, merchant, Lord Mayor of Sydney, 1846 and a member of the first Legislative Assembly. The house stood in the centre of present day Stafford St on the 8 1/4 acre grant to William Lithgow of Jan 8, 1833. Broughton acquired the second Gurner holding (8 1/8 acres) in 1845 and the remainder of Gurner's estate in 1886 - his property then ran from Heeley St to Cascade St. This was sold off in 1898 and subdivided, being the last estate in Paddington to be broken up built on in the early 1900's.

3

On the corner of William St and Underwood St is the London Hotel, built in 1875, it is one the area’s oldest hotels. Generations of Paddington locals have used the space for almost 150 years.

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well and happy now that the restrictions have lifted and we don't have to wear a mask - thank heavens.

The suburb name Paddington came about when James Underwood subdivided in Oct, 1839, 50 acres of the 100 acres granted to him, Robert Cooper and Francis Forbes for the purpose of setting up a distillery. Underwood called his subdivision the Paddington Estate after the London Borough of that name and it covered the land from Oxford St down to present day Paddington St.

I head down the stylish, boutique shopping hub of William St, and turn onto Paddington St. Situated on the corner of Paddington St and Elizabeth St is the 1st WoollahraPaddington Scout Group which was formed in 1908. It is the first in Australia and is still in continuous existence.

4

GEMINI (May 20 - June 20)

5 Along Paddington St is the The Paddington Church of Christ which was founded in 1894. Today it is has a small but committed group of Christfollowers who love Jesus, love his Word, and love sharing around His table. On the corner of Jersey Rd and Paddington St look down and you will see a plaque dedicated to Rudy Komon who was an art dealer, wine judge and connoisseur. He established one of the pre-eminent art dealerships in Sydney and introduced a new standard of relationship for the art dealer and artist.

THE HIGH PRIESTESS is the Tarot Card for CANCER. This card shows a mysterious Goddess sitting between two pillars. Beyond her is a vibrant garden filled with fruit. She is a symbol of power but she never reveals her secrets. Although sometimes you have insecurities you do have very good communications and so should move ahead with confidence and good fortune will come to you. Your own intuition generally proves right. Continuing my walk down Underwood St is the Bonython Cafe. At the entrance is a plaque dedicated to lan Stuart Morris 1942-2007.

Alan Morris was the co-founder of the widely-known Australian advertising agency Mojo. In partnership with fellow copywriter Allan Johnston, Morris took to new heights the approach of selling Australian products by celebrating Australian stereotypes. Throughout the 1980s the partnership enjoyed considerable success - Mojo advertising campaigns not only reflected the Australian vernacular, but also contributed to it in an enduring way, via pithy slogans well-paired with memorable tunes which then caught on as ‘household sayings’, including C’mon, Aussie, C’mon for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket).

COMMUNITY LEADER RECEIVES FRENCH KNIGHTHOOD South-east Sydney community leader Noel D’Souza has been honoured by the French government at a ceremony in Maroubra.

For the good folks of South-Eastern Sydney, this includes the battle to stop the NSW Government’s plans to build a new cruise terminal in Yarra Bay. My community group Save the Bay Coalition has been working with other environment groups, the La Perouse Land Council, Councils, our Members of Parliament local businesses and residents to persuade the Government that Sydney does not need a third cruise terminal.

The former Randwick mayor and Matraville businessman received the Légion d’Honneur medal from French consul Anne Boillon in recognition of his services to the local French community. As mayor, Noel secured a long lease for Randwick Council over the La Perouse Museum, which celebrates the navigational exploits of La Perouse and other French explorers. In addition, he was instrumental in the establishment and expansion of an international French school in Maroubra.

With the return of international cruise ships to Sydney in April this year, Australian authorities have thrown the doors open even wider than before, with plans to open up cruise destinations on the South Coast. We have been working with port communities around Australia to call for sustainable cruise tourism, including a cap on cruise numbers to protect our beautiful harbour and assurances that no new ports will be built to accommodate the foreign cruise line industry. Our fear is that with the resumption of cruising, beautiful Yarra Bay will now be back in the NSW Government’s sights. Recent comments by the NSW Transport Minister indicate that work could soon resume on a business case for the terminal.

The French equivalent of a British knighthood, the Légion d’Honneur is rarely conferred to people outside France. To celebrate his elevation to the 220-year-old Napoleonic order, Noel hosted a lavish do at South Maroubra Surf Club’s top floor Horizons function room, with its panoramic views out to the ocean. There was a five course lunch with individually monogrammed menus, music and speeches by dignitaries. MC’d by cricket legend Mike Whitney, the event kicked off with a smoking ceremony by indigenous man Matthew Doyle. Then there was a welcome to country by Elder Barbara Keeley. ‘Auntie’ Barbara summed up Noel’s bonds with the south-eastern community as she turned to him and said: “Thank you for making me part of your life.” Local soprano Patricia Turner then took to the microphone and performed the Australian and French national anthems. Next it was time to hear from NSW Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure, who told how he got to know Noel as a child, when his grandparents lived in Matraville. The minister called Noel “a champion of multiculturalism” and said the honour was “well-deserved.” Mr Coure also highlighted the fact that Noel was well-liked throughout the community. “We’re here today because everybody likes Noel,” he said. Mike Whitney then said a few words about Noel’s positive effects on the Matraville area. “When Noel got onto council I started to see trees,” he said. And then it was time for Mike to introduce French consul Anne Boillon. Madame Boillon told how the Légion d’Honneur is the “highest national honour in France for both civilians and military.” It celebrated the French ideals of equality, liberty and fraternity. Its aim was to “create a new aristocracy based not on family titles, but on individual merit and shared values.”

Australia has emerged from almost a decade of climate inaction and an environment in a state of decline to a new dawn with the election of the Albanese Government. Matt Thistlethwaite has been returned as Labor member for Kingsford Smith and will be making a contribution to stronger environment policies.

The consul paid tribute to Noel’s work in building up enrolments at the Lycée Condorcet international French School in Maroubra to 1000. She said: “Education has always been one of Noel’s commitments, a legacy from his mother who had been in charge of a school in India.” Mme Boillon also paid tribute to Noel’s partner Anick Antoine, who is very active in the local French community.

Kamay Ferry Project

Almost as concerning are the NSW Government’s plans for multi commercial berths and infrastructure – the “Kamay Ferry” project – at Frenchman’s Beach and Kurnell.

Then came the high point of the afternoon’s proceedings as Mme Boillon pinned the Légion medal to the lapel of Noel’s jacket. And now it was Noel’s turn to speak into the microphone. Noel told how he had met Emmanuel Macron when the French President was out here in 2018. “He looked me in the eye and shook my hand thanked me for all the things I was doing to promote French culture,” he said. Noel thanked President Macron and France for conferring the honour and paid further tribute to Anick, saying she “inspires me to do good.” He also thanked VIP guests who’d come to the event, including the Consul General of India Manish Gupta, Consul General of Malta Lawrence Bughair, Leon

Photos: Glenn Duffus

Goltsman from the Jewish Board of Deputies and principal of the Lycée Condorcet, Nicholas L’Hotellier. Finally, veteran MP and former Botany mayor Ron Hoenig gave a brief speech, saying how for 40 years, since opening his first pharmacy, Noel had always been ready to “struggle for those he felt he had a duty to struggle for.” Tony Maguire

Frenchman’s Beach, like Yarra Bay, has become a prized recreational area in Sydney with visitors joining locals to enjoy fresh open space, the historic setting and fabulous views and swimming. This huge wharf over-development will negatively impact the marine environment and recreational use of the area. Divers and marine ecologists have sounded the alarm that unacceptable pollution of waters during piling operations and anchoring of vessels may result in disturbance of sediments that will impact the marine ecosystem. It is essential that marine contamination testing takes place to ensure the public, swimmers in particular, are protected before this project is allowed to proceed.

makes my blood boil that people will now be deprived of their bus services to destinations like St Vincent’s Hospital and Circular Quay. “We have one of the largest residential developments in Australia at Eastgardens,

“When our bus network is privatised there will be even more cuts, more routes cancelled, less frequent services, bus stops will be taken away and people’s lives will be even worse. This is what happens with Liberal Governments.”

The Juniors Art Club

Welcomes you to our 57th Anniversary Art Exhibition

because of the population explosion around Green Square, “we’ve seen planning get ahead of mass transit solutions.” At the same time, he has defended the south east bus cuts, saying people using the

survey cut-off date is June 18. Once community feedback has been assessed, the changed bus services will be introduced later in the year. Tony Maguire

NMI objects to TNG’s eastern creek incinerator The Next Generation (TNG) have been allowed to resubmit their EIS for their Eastern Creek incinerator after agreeing to remove shredded vehicles and chromate treated timber from the fuel stream. They will burn mixed waste organic outputs (MWOO) instead. But according to the EPA, MWOO contains shredded plastics, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and toxic heavy metals that cannot be removed. This makes it unsuitable as a fuel as toxic heavy metals

will be discharged and POPs such as dioxins and furans will be produced.

SO, WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

TNG’s revised EIS still creates the same unacceptable risks to the environment and health of surrounding residents and should be rejected now! Support our fellow neighbours in Western Sydney? TREK FOR REFUGEES Almost five years ago, Jessica Halliday began working in an Adult English Migrant Program providing free childcare to migrants and refugees learning English. When she started, she had very little knowledge of what a refugee was, and the knowledge she did have was probably very biased. It took being exposed to stories and experiences so vastly different to her own, particularly that of refugees, to make a genuine and stirring impact. "The impact of my work and the learning journey I have been on with refugees has been so profound that it has completely changed who I am and made me a better, kinder, and more humane person. This impact has also pushed my desire to create positive change both in and outside of the workplace. For the last three years, I have participated in the Ration Challenge, a fundraising campaign by the charity and international humanitarian agency Act for Peace", says Jessica. For one week, participants eat just a small amount of rations (usually rice, beans, and sardines) to replicate the same food a person living in a refugee camp receives. The challenge is far from easy and pushes onself outside their comfort zone. With the increasing situation in Ukraine and refugee and displacement numbers rising globally this year, Jessica has decided to

to join Act for Peace and Soulful Concepts on their first-ever Trek for Refugees, a seven day hike of the iconic Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory.

While scenically spectacular, the journey through the Larapinta will undoubtedly be a physically and emotionally demanding one, with over 50km being trekked in just five days. Jessica is training for 4 hours on the weekends plus walking each day. As she never has done the trek before, her body is slowly adjusting; however, she admits there are times when she questions if she is capable of what's ahead. But the cause is too great to give up. "Refugees are among some of the most beautiful, kindest, and resilient people I have ever met. They have dreams and hopes just like you and me, and all they seek is safety and security for themselves and their families. I hope to make this a reality through my trek and fundraising efforts". To support Jessica you can make a taxdeductible donation using the URL and QR code (right). All contributions will support initiatives that reduce displacement and create safety, dignity and belonging for displaced people. This support ensures that people who have been affected by disaster and conflict take leadership over their lives and find a safe and permanent place to belong. Together, we can create a just and peaceful society for all.

Do you care about your community and want to take part in discussions about Port Botany’s operations and activities? NSW Ports is looking for an active community member to join the Port Botany Community Consultative Committee, which enables information sharing and feedback between community members, local businesses and government. Suitable applicants would have good local networks and a strong understanding of community views on local issues. The role is voluntary, and members are required to attend up to five meetings a year. Please contact the committee’s independent Chair, Roberta Ryan, if you would like more information or to apply, via: Roberta@forward-thinking.net.au.

BONDI FESTIVAL BACK THIS JULY Save the date for one of winter's most exciting events – Bondi Festival is back in 2022. The threeweek, all-ages arts festival will take in various locations across Bondi from July 1-17, celebrating local artists, immersive performance and more; all programmed for ultimate play.

Presented by Waverley Council, in partnership with Bondi and Districts Chamber of Commerce, Bondi Festival is a boutique arts and performance festival including a family-friendly entertainment hub. Featuring performers, storytellers and creators from Sydney and beyond, sharing everything from digital to physical, including new works in unusual places. The famous Bondi Vista Ferris Wheel will open in a new windowmakes a return to the Festival, providing a birds-eye view over Bondi Beach, and for something different, swap the surfboard for skates and glide around the Bondi Festival Ice Rink. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Bondi Festival is just one of the ways Council

is supporting the local arts industry and small businesses during this period of economic recovery after lockdowns. “Bondi Festival brings a little extra warmth and joy back into our lives this winter with some fantastic entertainment, immersive experiences, adventures and laughs,” Mayor Masselos said. “We’ve played with new ideas and ways of engaging with our local performers and entertainers to give Sydneysiders and those visiting us from interstate and overseas a festival to remember.” Festival Director Rachel Chant said, “Playful, immersive and tailor-made, this year’s program takes over Bondi for three weeks of art and playful audience experiences. Go ice-skating by the beach or commune with the dead in a mysterious location, date an artist live on stage or take in a panoramic view of the coastline on the Bondi Vista Ferris Wheel. We’ve turned our sights locally this year, and I couldn’t be more excited by the gems we’ve programmed throughout the suburb.”

Opening weekend kicks off with @AbuSalim, a wild, gender-bending, comedy mash-up created by Randa Sayed and hosted at Badlambs Barbershop. Experience a bit of magic each Friday and Saturday night, by hopping on a mystery bus and shuttling off to an undisclosed location for a theatrical séance from magician Harry Milas. Week two and three are all about contemporary immersive performances. I Liked It, from artist Joel Bray transforms the Bondi Bowlo into a pub trivia night, taking contemporary dance out of the theatre and into the Bowlo to see what passes the pub-test. Stroll into Exquisite Corpse at Sparky the Library Van at Bondi Beach for one-on-one

storytelling experiences, where this time it's the young people who sit you down and read you a story from once upon a time. Or pop on your headphones for a walking tour through North Bondi. Curated by kids from Galilee Catholic Primary School in collaboration with grown up artists, discover the magic of their neighbourhood through their eyes. Closing the festival is Onstage Dating with multi-award-winning performer, theatremaker and producer Bron Batten. Watch her negotiate first dates live on stage, from the safety of your seat, or volunteer to be part of the action as Bron takes modern romance to the next level. Bondi Festival runs July 1-17. While plastic is a versatile and useful product, it’s increasingly threatening our natural environment. Single-use plastic items are those designed to be used once and then thrown away. They are cheap and convenient, but they pose an enormous threat to our environment.

Ed 42, June, 2022

SINGLE USE PLASTICS BAN

Plastic packaging and single-use plastic items make up 60% of all litter in NSW. The Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act 2021, which was passed by NSW Parliament on November 16, 2021, sets out the items to be banned in NSW. These bans will prevent nearly 2.7 billion plastic items from entering the coastal, marine and bushland environments of NSW over the next 20 years. The legislation also provides a comprehensive framework that will help transition NSW towards a circular economy where materials and resources are valued and kept in the productive economy while creating jobs and protecting the environment and the community. The NSW Government has committed to banning certain problematic plastics, such as single-use plastics, and addressing the problem of plastic waste. From June 1, 2022, the supply of lightweight plastic bags will be banned in NSW. And from November 1, 2022, the supply of single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, bowls and plates and expanded polystyrene (EPS) food service items will be banned in NSW. The supply of single-use plastic cotton buds and

microbeads in rinse-off personal care products will also be banned in NSW. The bans affect everyone ... businesses, organisations, and consumers. Consumers will no longer receive banned plastic items when purchasing goods, including take-away food. This will start to be noticed from June 1 when lightweight plastic bags are banned, and again from November 1 when other items are banned, including single-use plastic straws,

stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and cottonbuds, expanded polystyrene food service items and rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbeads. Alternatives to banned items may be provided by businesses and organisations or, ideally, consumers can bring their own. If consumers still have banned single-use plastic items at home once the bans come into effect, they can continue to use them for personal use but they cannot supply them for

operation of a business or organisation such as a sporting or community club. The bans applies to anyone who supplies a prohibited item in NSW while carrying on a business. This includes carrying on a business for commercial purposes. It is not an offence to supply a banned item to a person outside NSW, but it is recommended that you check for similar bans in other jurisdictions.

KIDS GIVING BACK

DOING GOOD FEELS GOOD … AND THAT’S GOOD FOR EVERYONE Parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches and counsellors all share the same concern echoed widely in the media: adolescent mental health is in crisis. It was in a spiralling state before Covid, and since the pandemic … well it seems to have nosedived even further – and for valid reasons. Wellbeing centres are popping up on school campuses, social and emotional learning is starting to take an important part of curriculum goals in schooling and efforts to reduce the stigma – even erase it – of mental health issues, and particularly those of anxiety and depression are showing greater success with each younger generation. Increasingly young people themselves are openly talking about once taboo or shameful topics; raising awareness of their stress levels, their causes of anxiety and states of depression. And many are proactively taking steps for both treatment and prevention of mental health issues, as well as securing their wellness by seeking activities that reduce their stress, give them a sense of meaning, and make them feel good. “This is the best thing I’ve done in a long time!” Our staff and volunteers at Kids Giving Back hear this regularly. With programs running in our Paddington hub as well as in schools, kids are given a variety of opportunity to give to others and feel really good about themselves – and they love it.

Volunteering delivers all kinds of wins, for everyone. It builds community and creates a positive difference in the lives of others. Those on the receiving end of generosity get a tangible benefit as well as a psychological benefit. Everything produced and given at Kids Giving Back is packaged with a handwritten message from a young person. Messages of hope, encouragement and empathy colourfully decorate every food package, care package and box or bag of supplies. *Stan, a recipient of one of our food packages wrote to us: “Thank you so much for the delicious meal. When I read the wonderful message on the lid and saw it was written by a child, I thought to myself, the world isn’t such a bad place after all”. Building community by not only sharing one’s generosity, but one’s empathy, builds connection that makes community better, stronger and happier. With so many stressors, screens and competing influences harming our children’s mental health, the simple act of serving others is a wellness tonic for greater happiness.

VOLUNTEERING

• Builds self esteem. • Improves communication skills. • Hones decision-making. • Offers real-world experience and skill building. • Develops leadership. • Associated with increased academic performance. • Strengthens positive socialising with

peers and others and decreases social isolation. • Enables self-discovery and sparks new interests. • Increases confidence. • Develops empathy. • Decreases stress, anxiety and depression. • Increases engagement with the world and interest in solving social and environmental issues. • Provides young people with a sense of purpose. • Leads to greater sense of connection to others – a foundation of feeling happy. Kids Giving Back is on a mission to build the next generation of generosity, not just

because doing good does good for the world, but because doing good also feels good for our young people. They need to feel happier, and they deserve it. As servant leader Albert Schweitzer once said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Kids Giving Back runs programs every week for kids, corporates and families, afterschool, weekdays, weekends and in school holidays. Join us to do good and feel good. Visit www.kidsgivingback.org to learn more about giving opportunities for every age. Gabrielle Morrissey Hansen, PhD CEO

Aboriginal Heritage Award

Congratulations to our Strategic Planning Team, who won the Aboriginal Heritage category in the National Trust NSW 2022 Heritage Awards for the Woollahra Aboriginal Heritage Study. The Study provides Council and the community with an understanding of local Aboriginal history and heritage and a strategy to manage both known and undocumented places and areas of significance in a culturally appropriate way. We hope the Study, which involved the support and guidance of Dr Paul Irish of Coast History and Heritage and the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council, will continue to promote greater local awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal heritage.

Bondi gets ready to rock again

Live music is returning to Bondi Beach. Councillors have approved the staging of an all-ages surf music event, The Drop Live, in October. A report to Council said the event would “feature a strong connection to surfing culture” and be held on a Saturday in the first half of October. The date will be set once the headline act is confirmed. The report said the Drop Live team are “experienced and competent event producers” who previously staged Beach Fest 2015 in Bondi Park. Since then, The Drop Live has successfully produced 12 events at a range of coastal locations across Australia. Council anticipates a crowd size of 10,000. The event will be licenced and the impact on regular beach users is predicted to be minimal. “A section of the southern end of Bondi Beach will be closed to the public for a period of approximately six days,” the report stated. “Recreational access will be maintained along the waterline throughout this period.”

Rose Bay upgrade

Woollahra Council has received a $480,000 grant to upgrade the laneways, streets and carparks on both sides of New South Head Rd as part of the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program.

This still happens at Diamond Bay. But now a project is being designed to divert the Diamond Bay outfall to the Bondi Wastewater Treatment Plant. From there it will be released three kilometres out to sea via the Deep Ocean Outfall, constructed in the early 1990s. The project will involve the construction of two pumping stations, along with a series of maintenance pits and ventilation points.

The funding will help to increase foot traffic and accessibility, support small businesses and make Rose Bay an even better place to live, work and visit.

At the latest full meeting of Waverley Council, councilors agreed to investigate “options to configure underground infrastructure to consolidated tanks and pits as close together as practical to reduce the overall underground footprint.”

Digital parking launches in Woollahra

Concerns about private bus services

Digital parking is now available in the Woollahra area, with the new Park’nPay App making it possible to pay for more than 500 local parking spaces through your phone. You can use the app to find the location of the nearest parking meter and electric vehicle charging station, receive real-time parking availability and also conveniently top-up a meter while on the go. For more information, visit parknpay.nsw.gov.au.

A meeting of the Strategic Planning and Development Committee agreed to make a strong submission to Transport for NSW on the impact of bus service privatization in Sydney Buses’ Region 9, covering the eastern suburbs. The submission will warn that a reduction in services would lead to congestion on the roads of Waverley LGA as more people opt for private transport.

Markets, commercial revitalisation for Kingsford

Randwick Council is taking steps to revitalise Kingsford businesses, which have suffered a downturn thanks to Light Rail construction, followed by COVID. The rescue mission is being led by Greens Councillor and former deputy mayor Philippa Veitch, who put up plans to bring Kingsford commerce out of the doldrums, including re-establishing markets at the Rainbow Street carpark. Cr Veitch thinks there can be both day and night markets at the neglected site. She also called for a council marketing campaign aimed at boosting patronage of restaurants, cafes, specialty food shops and other businesses in the Kingsford town centre. Local businesses “are in need of urgent support to revitalise the area and attract residents to this major town centre,” she said. Councillors carried Cr Veitch’s motion that a report on the operation of markets and promotional strategies be produced by October.

Council may right traffic wrong in Matraville

Good news for locals who have been inconvenienced by a no right turn restriction introduced a few years ago in Matraville – a councillor is trying to get it scrapped. The unpopular signage imposes a right turn only restriction on the right lines in both directions at the junction of Bunnerong Road and Franklin/Perry Streets. Newly-elected South Ward Councillor Bill Burst (Liberal) says this creates a bottleneck, with the merging of traffic into a single lane posing “a safety issue for the community.”

Fred Hollows Reserve not a sight for sore eyes What would the late eye surgery champion Dr Fred Hollows say? The two hectare gully in Randwick named in his honour has become overgrown with weeds. Now the site, known as Glebe Gully before being dedicated to Dr Hollows in 1993, has been closed by council.

But North Ward councillor Rafaela Pandolfini (Greens) is taking steps to ensure that the dedication of the reserve to the ophthalmologist was not a hollow gesture. Councillors agreed to her motion that regular maintenance be carried out by bushcare volunteers and contractors.

Hi everyone, Preserving and protecting our local environment is a very important issue to our entire community. We have fought to eradicate single use plastics and continue the fight to take real action on climate change. Working towards a sustainable future is of paramount importance to our community, and it is crucial that all levels of Government work together to resolve these issues. My office has been conducting online community town halls over the last few months on a variety of issues, including public transport, planning, and healthcare. Our next online community town hall will be on the topic of the environment, and I am interested to hear your experiences of our environmental system. In the last few years, members of the community have contacted my office about the issues of bushfire recovery, climate change, koalas, and threatened species. These issues are incredibly important to me, and I have been calling on our Government for a plan to protect our environment to help address them. To ensure your voice is being heard, I invite everyone to come to our forum so you can share your experiences and concern. I will be joined by NSW Labor Shadow Minister for the Environment, The Hon. Penny Sharpe, MLC. To register, please scan the QR code below or head to the link: https://marjorieoneill.com. au/community/community-town-hallmeetings/

This meeting is a great opportunity to raise any concerns you may have, to share your experience with our environmental system and shine a light on any areas in which you would like to see change. I look forward to seeing you there!

ON EXHIBITION Randwick Comprehensive Planning Proposal

Local Environmental Plan (LEP) Review Randwick City Council has developed a Comprehensive Planning Proposal (CPP) to update the Randwick Local Environmental Plan 2012 (LEP 2012). The Randwick CPP seeks to amend the Randwick LEP to align with the strategic direction and planning priorities of State, metropolitan and local strategies, as directed by the NSW Government.

WHAT IS PROPOSED?

WANT TO KNOW MORE?

Key updates to the LEP include: • Housing growth areas • Sustainable and vibrant neighbourhoods

• Changes to strengthen and protect open space, parks and playgrounds

• Amendments to dual occupancy controls

• Support for a diverse, safe and inclusive night time economy

• Measures to preserve our built heritage

• Measures to protect local small-scale retail

• New provisions to promote environmental resilience

• Rezoning requests and housekeeping changes.

COUNCIL’S OBJECTION We understand that some people have legitimate concerns about increasing populations and densities. Council shares these concerns and we have been vocal in objecting to NSW State Government housing targets. But the reality is we don’t have a choice. We are under direction from the NSW State Government to meet housing targets of 4,464 new dwellings in the next 6-10 years. To limit the impact of these housing targets, our draft LEP proposes that additional housing is located in areas close to public transport, jobs and shops. We have put considerable research and consultation into the LEP review process and would genuinely like to hear your thoughts and views prior to making a final decision.

The Comprehensive Planning Proposal and affordable housing plan for the Housing Investigation Areas are on public exhibition from 31 May to 12 July 2022 and can be viewed online at: yoursay.randwick.nsw.gov.au/LEP2022 To speak with a Council planner about the LEP, call our dedicated enquiry line on 9093 6995.

HARD COPIES OF DOCUMENTS CAN BE VIEWED AT: Council’s Customer Service Centre 30 Frances Street Randwick 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays)
