So why 12 months instead of 10? The answer is that the old calendar was based on the moon, making it unsuitable for managing a far flung empire. Caesar’s astronomers advised him that a 12 month calendar, based on the sun would be more accurate. The new calendar was introduced by Caeser in 45 BC. It had 12 months, and every fourth year was a leap year.

It means of the family of, or related to, or similar to, or of this group and it can be found as far north as Norway, (Nordic) and all the way down to the Perian Gulf. It appears in Romantic, Italic, Music, Prophetic, Pathetic and dozens more and when non Romans couldn’t manage the “itch” pronunciation they turned it into “ish” as in Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, British, English, Polish, Scottish, Welsh and Irish. In France “Frankic” ended up as French.
History aside we have all our favourites including Walkabout with Ruth, Potts Point (Part 2) (P10) and What’s On (Bayside, SE BUSINESS FINDER Voice and Bondi Buzz), plus planning for New Years Eve (P4); Christmas shopping for men (P5); Nationwide Garage Sale Trail on weekends Nov 11-12 and 18-19 (P13); Probus events (P12) and Bondi Pavilion takes a bow (P16). And don't forget to catch Sculpture by the Sea (P17) and also Head On Photo Festival (P17), all on in November.

Empires come and empires go, but they always leave their mark, and those two little letters “ic” can be found throughout the world wherever the Roman Empire extended.
Unfortunately, saving our history is an ongoing battle, with Waverley Council now having to fight to preserve Bondi Bowling Club after the NSW State Government increased its rent by 420%! “Bondi Bowlo” is a much loved community club, but is sadly on Crown land. The Council is seeking permission to take over management of the land to help raise funds by using the facilities and running events (P18).

If you’re asking why March, it’s to do with war. Building empires means fighting wars, and you don’t start military campaigns in the middle of winter, you start them when the weather gets warmer and your soldiers can March. And you name the month Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war, and if you’re wondering how it ended up as March it’s because they put “ic” on the end of it making it Maric, think Djokovic for the pronunciation.

Well it all goes back to the time of Julius Caeser. With a massive Empire to run and thousands of activities to coordinate he needed a calendar that was reliable from the Scottish border to the Persian Gulf, one that was more reliable than the one he had inherited, which had 10 months and started in March.
However, we can mention that 21 Espresso was opened by Jansci (John) Schiffer in 1958. It offered outdoor seating and some of the first espresso coffee in Australia and soon became very popular, despite (what some called) John’s occasionally curt manner. To this day, at the back of the restaurant, there still hangs a sign that says “You have two choices – Take it or leave it” – The good news is that the restaurant is still there and the building is being considered a heritage order (P4).

All perfectly logical. And totally wrong. So how did that happen?
All it needed was another two months, so January and February were added at the beginning of the year and the fifth and sixth months were renamed after Julius and Augustus Caesar. Both had 31 days to signify their importance. All that’s ancient history, and hard to match.

HERITAGE LISTING FOR TWENTY-ONE ON THE TABLE To protect the character and charming village atmosphere of Double Bay, the heritage listing of some special commercial sites is being considered – including the arcade containing celebrated restaurant Twenty-One Espresso.
Located in 21 Knox St, Double Bay and affectionately referred to as the ‘21’, it’s renowned for traditional Hungarian dishes, including firm favourites matzo ball soup, schnitzels, and paprika chicken plus an array of desserts – such as Pischinger torte and Gundel pancakes. The original owner Jansci (John) Schiffer moved to Sydney from Hungary in 1957 and opened Twenty-One Espresso in 1958 – and it has enjoyed success ever since. What’s the secret? As John’s son, current owner George Schiffer, whose own daughter Cassie manages the restaurant, told Eastern Suburbs Life: “Make customers welcome and give them what I believe they want.” Because this family-run restaurant serves consistently good food, it’s popular with regulars as well as new customers. “We find people come to us from all over Australia.
Sometimes people are here for a week from Melbourne, and they’ll have dinner here four or five times!” Schiffer said.
The original home-cooked recipes have been retained from when it started. “My father had a partner in the ’60s, Lydia Baisi – she was a very good cook and she put together most of the menu; what we’d call traditional, European recipes. They’re made the same way in a lot of places in Europe.” The retail area of Double Bay started in New South Head Rd so the 21 was the first retail place in Knox Street, the rest of the buildings were residential and “the suburb grew around our café”. A heritage review prepared by Lucas Stapleton Johnson & Partners (LSJ Architects) for Woollahra Council highlights an interesting history. Originally, 19-21 Knox St was comprised from the subdivision by William Prout Woolcott in 1886 [Lot 10] and Lot 11, purchased by Mrs Mary Smith Banks in 1887 for 250 pounds. Mrs Banks sold No 19 in 1921 to milk vendor Frederick William Trow Bayley. In 1954 the property was sold to builders Busch & Fischer and alterations followed, resulting in a new rear addition, shop-
front, and frontage to the laneway. Noted architect Douglas Forsyth-Evans designed the building: “a rare surviving example of the post-war commercial development of Knox Street and the Double Bay Centre… [combining] old-fashioned detailing with Modernist elements of large glass areas, contrasting textures and contrasting nonrectangular shapes with rectangular forms and horizontality.”
Council for its cultural significance, is that of the residence of the architect’s sister, founder of the National Trust of Australia, the eponymous Annie Wyatt House in Gordon. LSJ Architects further noted that ForsythEvans’ design of the Knox St arcade as a fashionable, retail/commercial building was “a contributing factor in the establishment of the ‘cosmopolitan’ character of the Double Bay Centre in the late 20th century".
Similar design features are found in ForsythEvans’ other works which include the former Caprice nightclub in Rose Bay [now Catalina Restaurant]. Another renowned but earlier work, heritage-listed by Ku-ring-gai
The exhibition period and public feedback on the planning proposal was in August and September. A final decision is expected early next year. Paula Towers

Photo: Mr Basil Sellers AM (left) and Matthew Lee (right) are excited about the possibilities Basil’s choral scholarship to Matthew offers for both the enhancement of music at St Mark’s and Matthew’s future career.
St Mark’s has a long tradition of producing and sharing excellent choral and organ music, for both our congregations and the wider community. Thanks to the generosity of Basil Sellers AM, St Mark’s Music (an activity of the St Mark’s Darling Point Cultural Trust) has instituted several Choral Scholarships. Matthew Lee is thrilled to be the first recipient of one of these scholarships. Matthew reflected, “I felt extremely privileged to be the first recipient of the Choral Scholarship. I am very excited to be able to play a part in the Sunday services, and for the opportunity to learn from all the talented musicians in the choir. I am hoping this opportunity will give me experience in liturgical music, which will expand the breadth of my repertoire and provide a sound base for other musical genres.” Matthew’s passion for music has been present throughout his life: “I have been singing since I was a toddler. My love for music started when I attended my first musical when I was five. I remember being completely mesmerised by the music, dancing, and performance and was inspired to become a musician and performer.” Amongst his many musical pursuits, Matthew has been a member of the Cranbrook School Voices Choir since Kindergarten and a Sydney Children’s Choir member for nine years. In 2022 he attended the Manhattan School of Music Summer Jazz program as a vocalist. His focus on classical music is also evident in his instrumental studies on both piano and cello. For a number of years, he has been learning cello with St Mark’s Choir Bass section leader, Dr Geoffrey Gartner. Matthew shared: “I would highly recommend joining the St Mark’s Choir. The group is guided by particularly talented musicians, and is a great place
to grow, both spiritually and as a musician. I believe the Choir contributes to the cultural and spiritual richness of this community. The music we sing carries powerful messages and our harmonious singing can evoke a sense of peace, joy, and reverence. I also believe that the choir can be a unifying force in the community. It can bring people from different backgrounds together, through a shared love of music and God.” Mathew was thrilled when he recently met Basil Sellers, sharing: “It was great to be able to personally thank Mr Sellers for the opportunity to join the St Mark’s Choir. I also had the opportunity to learn about his life and his accomplishments. This meeting inspired me to work hard towards my goals, believe in myself, and to strive to become a valuable member of the community to one day also give others the same opportunity.” The admiration is mutual, with Mr Sellers commenting: “How refreshing to see someone so young have such a strong musical ambition. I was impressed by Matthew’s enthusiasm for jazz and commitment to improve on that by going to New York.” For more information about St Mark’s Music, visit http://www.stmarksmusic.org/

ARE HEARING AIDS MOISTURE PROOF? Summer is coming and the risk of moisture damage to hearing aids due to perspiration is increasing.
Most hearing aids are not completely moisture proof. Moisture in hearing aids can cause corrosion and affect the performance of the microphone. So how much moisture can a hearing aid take before it starts to malfunction? Actually, not very much. Half a microlitre can cause a significant drop in the loudness level of a hearing aid, and it will also cause the microphone to malfunction in a way that will affect the user’s ability to hear well in background noise. If you’ve accidentally worn your hearing aids in the shower, got wet in thunderstorm, or worse still, put them through the washing machine or gone swimming with them on – don’t panic, they may not be damaged beyond repair. To dry out your hearing aid, do the following: • Turn off your hearing aids and remove the batteries (if you use disposable batteries). Dispose of wet batteries. • Put your hearing aids in a Hearing Aid Dry Kit (dehumidifier) if you have one. • If you don’t have a dehumidifier put your

Did you say Jewellery? Buy directly from the makers & SAVE! Being a journalist, I often get a chance to visit businesses, but never before, have I experienced such beautiful jewellery being handcrafted right before my eyes. Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Temple & Grace jewellers in Edgecliff and I must say, being there, made me feel very excited and happy. Temple & Grace are Australian jewellery-makers, who handcraft gorgeous diamond and gemstone jewellery. The collection of jewellery they have at their five star rated jewellery boutique beats any high-street retailer, and because they are jewellery-makers themselves, they are well over 40% cheaper than traditional retailers. Twisha, one of the co-founders of Temple & Grace, took me through the mind-blowing range of gemstone rings, diamond rings, bracelets, necklaces and more. Seeing the collection of loose gemstones like Ruby, Sapphire and Morganite bowled me over. Carol Stavrou and Eli Baroud, the senior and super-friendly jewellery advisors at Temple & Grace took me through some of the unique jewellery designs they have handcrafted for their clients. 'Being jewellery-makers, we have the ability to understand and handcraft very unique and unusual pieces’ explained Carol. Eli, who PDF.js viewer

Clients in this suburb need exceptional heirloom jewellery pieces, and we provide just that. And, being diamond and gemstone wholesalers, we’re able to provide outstanding quality at unbeatable prices. All Temple & Grace jewellery is backed by a valuation certificate and comes with benefits that last a lifetime, he said. I was surprised to know that Temple & Grace provide complimentary ring re-sizing for life. I’ve re-sized my ring before and spent about $150. Knowing that they provide this service, free for a lifetime, to all their customers was surprising.
Anand, the other co-founder of Temple & Grace mentioned how they have grown to have the largest range of unique jewellery in Australia. He took us through their website www.templeandgrace.com.au and highlighted some of the unique wedding bands they have. connect to the hairdresser, pharmacy and florist downstairs. • In 1950 Macleay Regis was the first apartment block to provide its occupants with coin-operated laundry. No. 40 Macleay St is famous because this building used to be the Sheraton Hotel... and this is where The Beatles stayed on their 1964 tour. The streets around Potts Point became a temporary home to 300 fans, 40 policemen and six private security guards. Even after the building’s conversion to strata apartments in 1997, No. 40 Macleay St still maintains its modernist roots and the integrity of its original facade.
5
I begin my walk heading up Wylde St passing HMAS Kuttabul. HMAS Kuttabul provides administrative, training, logistics and accommodation support to naval personnel assigned to the various facilities that form Fleet Base East, the main operational navy base on the east coast of Australia.
2
No. 22 Wylde St there is a plaque on the wall which states that 'Tor Cottage' once stood here in 1840s. Charles James Roberts extended the house in 1881 and renamed it 'Chatsworth'. It was demolished in 1922 and replaced with a new house for William Scott Fell. The Commonwealth of Australia later occupied it in 1940 for defence purposes, and in 1997 apartments were constructed. Continuing up Wylde St the street changes to Macleay St.
At No. 2 Macleay St is Jenner House, a grand 19th century marine villa designed by Edmund Blacket (1871). In 1875 the lease was transferred to J. T. Neale, and two years later in 1876–77 a third storey was added to a design by Thomas Rowe. The name was changed to Kurragheen, then later Lugano. car dealer Terry Mullens and his wife Wendy. completed a three-year restoration before advertising the property for sale in June 2014.
3
Further up the street is the Macleay Regis apartments. Before the Macleay Regis there were two semidetached homes known as Elizabeth Bay Villas. In 1911 these villas were sold to eminent physician Charles Blackburn. And in 1920 he combined the two homes into one. Harold Percival Christmas purchased the property in 1937. Christmas was one of the founders of Woolworth. On Sept 2, 1937, he applied to have the villas demolished. Christmas lodged an application to erect a new block of flats whose design would be inspired by Rockefeller. Architects Pitt & Phillips designed the new block of flats.
4
To this day, some of the buildings’ past and present residents include actors, interior designers, editors, restaurant critics, radio presenters and politicians. The Macleay Regis included: • A service kitchen on the eighth floor, which supplied residents with meals. • A live-in concierge. • Maid service. • An internal telephone system which allowed residents to
No. 42 Macleay St is 'Manar'. It dates back to the 1840s when Hugh Gordon purchased the site, which was once part of the Alexander Macleay Estate. It was later sold to Alfred Lamb (1845-1890) who built 'Manar Cottage' in 1867. Later demolished and replaced with a two-storey 20-bedroom Victorian Italianate Villa. In the late 1910s, the residence was sold and was converted into flats by David Davis Klippel, a music warehouseman and publisher, in the early 1920s. The development resulted in a total of three buildings containing 27 apartments.
6
One of the many prominent residents included Arthur Morley Hardy, brother to the founder of Hardy Bros. Jewellers. In 1931, Mr Hardy died after falling out of a window from his flat on the second floor. Coincidentally, on the same day that Mr Hardy died, two other former residents of 'Manar' also died. In 1943, another resident fell to his death from his bedroom window. World-famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba lived in apartment 5. High Court judge Sir Garfield Barwick lived in apartment 8. Prime Minister, Sir Jack McEwan lived in apartment 23. Sydney Lord Mayor Jack Armstrong lived in apartment 1. Lucy Turnbull, former Lord Mayor City of Sydney Council 2003 and wife of current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, was born in apartment 3. I head up Macleay St to the corner of Greenknowe Ave and Macleay St to 'Kingsclere', a Federation Free Style residential apartment building designed by architects Halligan and Wilton and built in 1912. Kingsclere was the first block of high-rise apartments to be built in Sydney. It was also the first to introduce the US style of building to the site's boundaries. The building featured the latest technology when first built.
7
It had "telephonettes" (i.e., intercoms), electric lighting and power throughout, parquet floors, and bakelite power points and switches. The idea for a cinema under the roof was rejected as a fire risk. Originally the building had a single caged lift. This was replaced in the late 1920s with the current two automatic lifts.

RANDWICK COUNCIL DECIDES NOT TO FLY PALESTINIAN FLAG Randwick City Council held a minute’s silence at an Extraordinary Meeting on Mon, Oct 23, 2023 in memory of all those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
Councillors resolved not to proceed with the flying of the Palestinian flag on Nov 29 (International Day of Solidarity) as had been previously planned prior to the Hamas terrorist attack on Oct 7. A Randwick City Council spokesperson said a majority of Randwick’s 15 Councillors supported a motion to not fly the Palestinian flag given the current conflict. “Randwick Council has made this decision to avoid inflaming what is currently a tense international situation and to avoid sending a message to the community that could be mistaken as support for Hamas,” the spokesperson said. “Council extends our sympathies to all those affected by the violence in Israel and Gaza and in particular the families in our
area who have lost loved ones. We reassert our commitment to stand against antiSemitism and Islamophobia wherever it occurs.”
The resolution of Randwick Council is as follows: RESOLUTION: (Rosenfeld/McCafferty) that Council: a) note that at the ordinary council meeting on the 27th of June council endorsed the Flying of the Flags Policy; b) does not fly the Palestinian flag on 29th November 2023 as it was passed at the June meeting to do so; c) notes that no foreign flags be flown from today onwards except in accordance with the Randwick Flying of Flags Policy or in accordance with an express resolution of Council; d) condemns the horrific and coordinated attack by Hamas on Israel; e) denounces the killing of civilians, the firing of rockets into cities and the taking of hostages; f) extends its sympathy to the loved ones of those who have died;

GUIDE ON HOW TO WRITE A WILL AND HELP SICK KIDS A Will is a legal document that states who you want to receive your assets and how your Estate is to be managed when you pass away. Even if you think you don’t have much, it’s still important to make a Will. GUIDE ON MAKING A WILL 1. You must be 18 years or older.
2. Ensure your details are accurate and up-to-date. 3. Ensure your full name is correctly written and your current address is included. 4. Clearly state that you are revoking all other Wills that you may have executed before. This is important if the Will is contested or challenged. 5. Appoint an Executor or Executors. The Executor is the person who will carry out your instructions and administer your Estate. 6. Nominate guardians for children. If your children are under 18 years of age, you will need to appoint a legal guardian to look after them if both parents pass away. 7. Determine who the beneficiaries are and how assets will be distributed. Beneficiaries are those who receive your assets. 8. Ensure the Will is signed by two independent witnesses who are not beneficiaries. When considering the wording for a Will you may also want to: • Write personal messages • Specify your final wishes • Make arrangements for pets • Leave specific gifts to loved ones • Include gifts to charities that you care about
Leaving a gift in your Will, no matter how large or small, is a powerful way to make a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of children far beyond your lifetime.
By leaving a gift in your Will to Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF), you can help fund groundbreaking research, purchase vital cutting-edge equipment, and enable SCHF to continue its mission to ensure world-class health care for children. Making or changing your Will to include a gift to SCHF can be as simple as contacting your legal advisor and they will do all the important work for you. Alternatively, you could use an online option to create a simple Will. Safewill is Australia’s highest rated online Will writing platform. Environmental Levy Sustaining our City for the next 20 years ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEVY
WHAT CONTINUING OR STOPPING THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEVY WOULD MEAN FOR YOU
Since 2004, Randwick Council’s sustainability initiatives and environmental improvements have been funded by an Environmental Levy. The levy has five key priority areas: • Conserving our coast • Tackling climate change • Protecting biodiversity
OPTION 1 CONTINUE LEVY
OPTION 2 DISCONTINUE LEVY
Under this option, ratepayers continue paying the Environmental Levy and it is made permanent. The levy will fund important sustainability improvements, maintenance and projects.
This option proposes discontinuing the Environmental Levy. Ratepayers would receive a small reduction in their rates, but Council will have to cancel, reduce or delay many sustainability projects.

BONDI PAVILION WOWS HONG KONG GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL
Waverley Council’s award-winning Bondi Pavilion restoration has received five stars reviews from the prestigious Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) whose representatives toured the heritage building in October.
HKGBC regards Australia as a global leader in sustainable building practices through our well-established Green Star rating system. Bondi Pavilion, established in 1928 as the “Playground of the Pacific”, is targeting a 5-star green star rating as part of this project. "The 35-member strong overseas delegation was impressed at how the design of our heritage listed Pavilion restoration had so successfully combined sustainability and innovation in the most elegant of ways,” Mayor Masselos said. “The Bondi Pavilion restoration is a beautiful example of how a Council as small as Waverley can make green building projects not only a reality, but excel at it, through
commitment to innovative design and prudent fiscal management.” Architect Peter Tonkin provided an overview of the building's sustainable design elements: • An 100% electric building with 217 solar panels that provide 71% of the building’s power needs during the day. • 80% of existing structure retained to embody energy and materials. • About 90% of the construction waste recycled. • Connected to a centralised stormwater harvesting system located at south Bondi Park which provides 100% of irrigation needs and for our public bathrooms.
• Improved thermal comfort in our open spaces and enclosed habitable rooms by minimising VOCs, using green star tagged products, and through using natural ventilation whenever and wherever possible. • A Building Energy Monitoring System that measures consumption of energy output and input. The system also controls ventilation and temperature and can be

Architects’ State Landscape Architecture Award for Civic Landscape.
• Nearby electric vehicle charging stations, public transport and bike racks on our doorstep.
• A Public Architecture award at the 2023 NSW Architecture Awards.
• Land use and ecology was also a major focus, with new mass planted mounds, timber seating and new native tree planting. The Bondi Pavilion Restoration Project has won several industry awards including: • 2023 Heritage Awards Judges Choice Award. • Australian Institute of Landscape
• Robin Dods Roof Tile Excellence Award in the 2023 Think Brick Awards. “Bondi Pavilion has seen many activities and reincarnations over the years and is now the cultural hub of Bondi with a theatre, gallery, music studios, art and pottery studios, and spaces for hire for regular classes, workshops, functions, festivals and parties,” Mayor Masselos said.
Turning more businesses into brands … IN A SNAP For over 40 years, businesses in the Bondi Junction area have turned to Snap Print Solutions located at 1B/10 Spring St for all their commercial printing needs. A substantial increase in demand for short run digital printing and signage recently inspired franchise owner Kyle Sutton to expand his business’ reach into the greater Eastern Suburbs business community.
Snap Print Solutions Bondi Junction Franchise owner, Kyle Sutton explains “We have seen continued growth over the last few years, particularly in personalised short run printing of labels, marketing collateral, promotional materials, and especially wide format signage. We work closely with local small to medium size businesses mainly, helping to transform their businesses into successful brands. More than 80% of our revenue is generated through long term, regular clients who appreciate the skills and knowledge we have, to provide the right print solution for their ever-changing needs.” In fact, sales for this centre have increased 50% over the past 18 months. As Kyle explains “We intend to keep the Snap Print Solutions brand growing so we need to start letting businesses in the wider Eastern Suburbs community know we are here and what products and services we can provide for them. I would guestimate at least 50% of our potential business clients would not know the full extent of the products and services we offer. We plan to change that and that’s where the agreement between Snap Franchising Support Office and Snap Print Solutions Bondi Junction has come from to officially expand the territory we market to.”
What is the secret to the success happening at Snap Print Solutions Bondi Junction? Kyle explains “Our growth has not been an accident. We have a very experienced team and support crew. Our Production Manager, Andrew has over 40 years of print and finishing experience, he started off as a teenager working in the newspapers and commercial print space. Andrew has been with us for nearly 10 years and we and our clients are both very lucky to have him. Roarke and Craig are recent additions to our team. Roarke is our Centre Manager who is great with Sales and is also an expert in wide format printing. Craig is a graphic designer and pre-press specialist (makes your files print-ready) and an all-rounder in print production and finishing.
Additionally, we have a list of carefully hand-picked third party suppliers who are specialists in their given fields for those bespoke jobs that our clients sometimes need. If that’s not enough, we have direct access to over 120 other Snap Print Solutions Centres around the country who can offer us technical and logistical support when required. This makes Snap Print Solutions the largest print and design network in the country, and this is why we are a fantastic option for any business in the greater Bondi area. Call or email us, jump on our interactive website, or just drop by and have a chat with us in person. Waverley Council joins mission to protect Bondi Bowling Club Waverley Council is working to secure the future of Bondi Bowling Club after the state government announced it was increasing the club’s rent by 420%.
Costs are set to ramp up in January, with the full amount scheduled to come into effect in Jan 2025. Bondi Bowlo is a not-for-profit cooperative, run by a volunteer board of directors and employs nearly 20 full-time and casual staff members. It operates on Crown Land and the state government manages its lease. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the Council was looking at ways it can help support the club which is a much-loved community facility that promotes active lifestyles and social cohesion. According to the club, the Department of Planning and Environment said the rent hike was to help maintain fire trails across the state. “Bondi Bowling Club is an egalitarian venue that welcomes all people. It offers access to a healthy and accessible sport in lawns bowls and other facilities including tennis courts and family friendly and affordable meals at their bistro,” Mayor Masselos said.
“It is not a wealthy club, and its options for revenue gathering are limited – it does not have poker machines and there is only so much they can charge for a schnitzel or a schooner of beer. “Other tenants on Crown land with commercial operations may have the ability to pay market rents, but our community bowlo is just not in a position to afford this.” Mayor Masselos met with the Club’s president, Matty Graham to discuss how Council could help support the club during this difficult period. On Oct 13 prior to the Council meeting, Mayor Masselos wrote to the Minister for Lands and Property, the Hon Steven Kamper, seeking an urgent meeting. Mr Graham said, “our organisational structure is built around community, we’re not run to make profit, we just want to ensure we can continue to keep our doors open and provide a safe and fun place for neighbours and families to gather”. “Our club is set up solely to support our local community and foster participation in the sport of lawn bowls,” Mr Graham said. “We’ve worked tirelessly to reinvent ourselves as a club for the 21st century, and have managed to stay financially viable without the crutch of poker machines. However,

we’re at a loss as to how we can realistically meet these rent increases - there’s no telling how much they’ll be put up yet again in the future.” At the Oct 17 Council meeting, Council unanimously resolved to: That Council: 1. Notes that the Mayor has written to the Minister for Lands and Property, the Hon Stephen Kamper MP, requesting reconsideration of the over 400% increase in rent being imposed on the Bondi Bowling Club by the Minns Government
without consultation with the club or community, and seeking a meeting. 2. Investigates options for Council to offer to take over the management of this parcel of Crown land from the State Government, after consultation with the Bondi Bowling Club and works with the club to see if Council could assist it raising funds by Council leasing the club premises for events, with a report to be prepared to Council*. *Mr Graham indicated to the Mayor on Oct 20 that the club is not seeking a change in management.

Community Hall murals
A series of murals for the newly-upgraded Cooper Park Community Hall in Bellevue Hill have been completed by artist Sharon Billinge. We asked the local community what they would like to see on the walls, and the feedback we received expressed a preference for local flora and fauna, which was woven into the artworks in the form of resident kookaburras and links to the surrounding native greenery of Cooper Park. The Hall is one of Woollahra Council’s venues for hire and is available 9am-9pm seven days a week. Children’s party session times are available from 9am-12.30pm and 1.30-5pm. Have your say on our draft Development Control Plan for Gas and Solar Energy Systems
Woollahra Council is exhibiting a proposed amendment to the Woollahra Development Control Plan 2015. The proposed amendment seeks to facilitate a transition away from gas usage in residential development by introducing new objectives and controls for improving indoor air quality, and update Council’s existing solar energy system controls to bring them into line with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021. Aimed to encourage a transition to electric appliances and promote improved human health, the controls propose that the installation of gas appliances, including cooktops, ovens and unflued space heating systems will not be permitted in indoor areas of residential development. Changes to the solar controls aim to provide certainty to applicants seeking to install solar energy systems within the Woollahra Local Government Area. View the proposed amendments in full and share your feedback by Nov 26 at yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/ dcp-2015-gas-solar.
A time for compassion
Care and respect are among our core values at Waverley Council. These values are what help shape resilient and compassionate communities that lean on one another during times of need. The unfolding crisis in the Middle East has caused great concern and distress for many in Waverley, including our large Jewish population. In the news and on social media, we are confronted with scenes which seem unimaginable from the peace and safety we enjoy in Australia. I am deeply shocked at these attacks and my thoughts are with the community at this time. My deepest condolences to families who have loved ones who have been killed, injured, displaced or are missing. If you require assistance or support during this difficult time, please contact Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636, Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800; JewishCare (during business hours): 1300 133 660 or Jewish House (outside of business hours): 1300 544 357. For any Australians who are in Israel or have plans to travel to Israel, please contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for advice. The result of the Voice to Parliament Referendum earlier this month has also caused distress for many of our First Nations community, the wider Waverley community, including Council’s own officers, who have advocated for a long time for constitutional recognition and reconciliation. I represent a community that overwhelmingly voted for an Aboriginal voice in the constitution and Council has an ongoing commitment to reconciliation as outlined in our Innovate Reconciliation Plan (RAP). The RAP outlines Council’s vision for a vibrant, resilient, caring and inclusive community where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples practice and celebrate their culture and heritage proudly, are honoured for their survival and resilience, respected and acknowledged as First Nations peoples with the right to determine their own futures, and supported to continue to overcome adversity. Let’s continue to show care and compassion for our fellow neighbours during these difficult times.

Public comment sought on continuing Environmental Levy
A levy program in place for the past 20 years funding sustainability improvements in Randwick City will be put on public exhibition from Nov 7 under a proposal to continue it permanently. The Sustaining our City Environmental Levy has delivered 12km of new Coastal Walkway, 25 water reuse projects and 38 gross pollution traps improving water quality at our beaches. It is due to expire on June 30, 2024. Continuing the levy costs the average ratepayer just $1.95 a week or $101 a year.

Councillors held a minute’s silence to honour the memory of local Aboriginal elder and La Perouse Stalwart Aunty Esme Timbery who passed away on Oct 6, aged 92. Aunty Esme was an esteemed Bidjigal artist well known for blending contemporary elements with traditional shellwork. Randwick Council extends its condolences to the Timbery family and all local Aboriginal people.
New multi-use hub for Kingsford
Randwick Councillors resolved to commence a feasibility study into a new development to be located at 1-11 Rainbow St in Kingsford will look at the possibility of including a new library, community hall, performance space as well as a relocation of Randwick Council’s offices from Randwick to Kingsford. The proposal will look at including retail, commercial and residential development as well as public parking.
Council extends Space to Create program
An artist residency program at Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra providing low-cost space for artists working across visual arts, film, textiles and writing will continue for another 12 months after a review found the program had been an overwhelming success. Use of the space is subject to an annual Expression of Interest process.
No change to free Coogee tennis courts
Hi Everyone, Following the results of comprehensive community consultation the NSW Government announced a significant development for our local educational landscape – the merger of Randwick Girls and Randwick Boys to establish a new co-ed high school. Following the community consultation, it was clear that co-educational schools were overwhelmingly preferred by the majority of those surveyed – especially, local primary school parents, carers and students in the community. In fact, 75% of parents of primary school students in our community stated they would prefer to send their child to a co-educational high school. Randwick High will cultivate an atmosphere where students, regardless of gender, contribute to a dynamic tapestry of ideas, talents, and perspectives to shape the leaders of tomorrow. Starting from 2025 the new co-ed high school for grades 7-12 replaces the existing Randwick Boys and Girls High Schools. However, there will still be single-sex learning environments and opportunities for all students to access. Holistically though this significant initiative aims to bring about a new era in education, fostering collaboration and inclusivity within the school community. Additionally, it will advance educational opportunities for all students at the school. An increase in the student population of a co-educational school will expand the range of curricula and co-curricular options. The wider range of course options available to Years 11 and 12 will support post-school pathways and career options. If you, or someone that you know, have any questions about the merger please call my office on 9398 1822 and we will be more than happy to provide additional information! We are working closely with both schools to support teachers, parents and students through this transition. Find out more by scanning the QR code!
Two tennis courts at Baker Park in Coogee will remain available for free informal community use with no bookings required. Council has managed the tennis courts for many years under an honour booking system.
Party time for local streets
Fifteen local areas seeking to close streets to hold community street parties will be supported by Randwick Council.
Please feel free to reach out if anything further is needed. Contact my office on (02)9398 1822, or at: coogee@parliament.nsw.gov.au, or visit us at 15/53-55 Frenchmans Rd, Randwick.
