Heinberg sees the democratic order, that we have recently enjoyed, as a gift of the industrialisation that cheap energy has brought us. At $US85, a barrel of oil provides 1,700 kilowatt-hours of energy, estimated as being equivalent to the work of eight labourers for a year. (How wealthy would you be if they all worked for you?)

All these things complement the news and information that we publish in Eastern Suburbs Life.

Throughout history this has been the way of the world, from Greek and Roman times, through to the times of Genghis Khan, and the “Robber Barons” of 19th century American business. Many suspect a new class of modern “Elites” behaving in the same way.

We are now running a monthly “Social Evening” and have also created Facebook page to provide an online “Local Paper” for Double Bay and a Facebook group where “Friends of Double Bay” can share news, information, articles and ideas (P10).

SOUTHEAST EASTERN SUBURBS

He discusses how trying to solve the problems by pumping money into the economy can lead to inflation and increases in the gap between the richest and poorest in the economy, how currency wars and real wars will emerge as political leaders seek to achieve their own survival, and the survival of the countries they lead and how the wealthy will look to secure their own wealth, irrespective of the impact on others.

With these thoughts in mind we have created “Eastern Suburbs Collaborative” to provide a platform that makes it easier for people to share news and ideas and work together to find answers to problems as they arise. We also think the process should be fun and are dipping our toe in the water by launching “Friends of Double Bay”.

Though uncomfortable for us, none of this would be a surprise to Richard Heinberg who published his book “The End of Growth” on Jan 1, 2011. WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR BAY ST, DOUBLE BAY?

When looking at the hoardings on Bay St it’s hard to believe it will soon be home to some of Double Bay’s newest and trendiest restaurants, making it something like Knightsbridge, or Soho in London. Following the enormous success of Neil Perry’s “Margaret”, Mia and Mike’s “Baker Bleu” and Neil’s “Next Door”, sandwiched between, we have news of more stylish restaurants to come including “Bartiga”, where Peron’s used to be, and “Tanuki”, less than a stone’s throw from Eddy Levy and Adam Abrams’ “Matteo” (which translates to “Matthew”, or “Gift of God”, depending on which dictionary you choose). The current dining scene is completed by adding Arte Bianca (International award winning Pizza), The Royal Oak (which dates back to the 1870’s) and Bibo (famous for it's fine food and wide selection of fine wines).

Curious about who’s planning these new restaurants? Then you’ll be pleased to know that the developments are in the safe hands of Neil Perry and fellow restauranteurs Eddy Levy and Adam Abrams. That means you can be assured of novel and entertaining eateries of the highest possible standard.

This time Neil will be opening a modern Asian restaurant serving a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Korean fare. For background he mentions that “Asian flavours have been a part of my life since I can remember. My father was crazy about Chinese food. I was lucky enough to be eating authentic Chinese food since the late 60s, early 70s and I’ve been eating it ever since.” “There’ll be some dishes that are classic but best versions of themselves and ones with a few modern twists, but people will still very much recognise them as being really awesome, tasty dishes they can relate to,” he says. “Fantastic roast duck will be a big focus.”

Neil Perry's 'Margaret' in Double Bay

As for Eddie and Adam, they’re opening a new Japanese restaurant just two doors away from their existing popular restaurant, “Matteo”. To add style it will have a bar with a 'speak-easy’ style entrance. As Eddie says “We’re excited about broadening our footprint in the area we’ve both grown up in.” We’re excited about seeing the end result when the hoardings come down. Greg Prior

Do you have questions about God that you don't feel like you're allowed to ask in church? Are you interested in the teachings of Jesus but have no interest in the stuffy, antiquated traditions of church? Then you're in exactly the right place. Senior Pastor Rev. Vanessa Williams-Henke and Creative Director Jonty Cornford have conversations and discussions with each other and occasional guests about the grey spaces and tricky places where Jesus and religion collide with the realities of life. FRIENDS OF DOUBLE BAY When News Limited ceased printing 112 local community papers in May 2020 it was a major blow to many sections of the community. Classified advertising disappeared, street festivals lost sponsors and locals could no longer find local news all in one place.

As CITAP* says, “Local news outlets play an important role in informing community members about local government, elections, and other civic events. They also help to shape community views around common values and beliefs, creating a sense of shared purpose that can be a powerful uniting force within a town or suburb.” Eastern Suburbs Life can’t turn back the social media tide, but it can seek to recreate local community publishing on a suburb by suburb basis using a mix of Hard Copy and Online services. We’ve started the process in the Double Bay Area by: • Running regular social nights so that people can meet each other again. • Creating the Friends of Double Bay Facebook Group for people to share information. • Creating the Double Bay Area News Facebook Page to publish curated news. • Publishing a Double Bay Area community directory to help people find each other.

• Creating a Friends of Double Bay Membership website to help members work together. • Pioneering collaborative projects to make it easier to people to work together as a group. • Creating a Community Publishing Platform that professionals can use to publish news. • Creating a Double Bay Area classifieds section in the Eastern Suburbs Life local paper. • Working with local businesses and community groups to share curated news and events. • Starting work on a Friends of Double Bay website to provide a home for all the above.

Walkabout with Ruth

East Sydney to Darlinghurst (Part 2)

In this Edition 61, I complete my walk from East Sydney to Darlinghurst.

1

I continue my walk heading down Riley St to Stanley St. On the corner of Francis St, I pass Beppi's Italian Restaurant which was established in 1956. It specialises in Italian cuisine and was founded by Italian-born chef Beppi Polese (and wife Norma), who owned and ran it with their family, including son Marc Polese. The restaurant is world famous, having served prime ministers, Hollywood stars, rock royalty and the elite. It claims to be “the longest-running restaurant under the same ownership in Australia".

I head up Francis St to Sydney Grammar School, which is one of the oldest schools in Australia. It opened in 1825 with Laurence Hynes Halloran as Head Master. In 1830, Sydney College was founded. Sir Francis Forbes, Chief Justice, became President of the College and laid the foundation stone of the present building in College St on 26 Jan, 1830. In 1835, Sydney College opened in this building with WT Cape as Headmaster. In 1842 he resigned and was succeeded by TH Braim. By1850 Sydney College was closed. Sydney Grammar School was founded by Act of Parliament in 1854, after Sir Henry Parkes, the Father of Australian Federation, tabled a petition from a group of citizens concerned that the fledgling University of Sydney needed a ‘nursery’ to provide it with well-prepared undergraduates.

2

I head back down to Stanley St which was once the centre of Sydney's original Italian community in the 1950s and 1960s, and was part of Sydney's first "Little Italy". Many Italian restaurants and cafes still line the street, and the street is home to the annual Primo Italiano festival.

3

4 Walking along Stanley St, on the corner of Palmer St is the C3 Church, which was originally the Palmer St Presbyterian Church, designed by renowned colonial architect Edmund Blacket, which opened for worship in 1858.

5

Further along Stanley St I turn right onto Bourke St, passing Sydney Church of England Girl's Grammar School (S.C.E.G.G.S.) which was officially opened in 1895 under the patronage of the Sydney Diocese of the Church of England. It originally started in a terrace house at 65 (now 55) Victoria St, Darlinghurst with one pupil and one teacher, as well as principal, Miss Edith Badham. Within a year, the school had increased to 50 pupils and moved to “Chatsworth”, a larger home in

GUIDING & TEACHING TAROT

6. East Village Hotel 7. Yarranma Place 8. The Horizon 9. Stoneleigh 10. Iona

Hello everyone and welcome to my column,

Macleay St. Within five years, the school had 100 pupils, including a Kindergarten and Junior school. “Barham” in Forbes St, Darlinghurst was purchased and the school moved there in 1901. A block back on the corner of Palmer and Liverpool St is the East Village Hotel, originally called the Tradesman's Arms Hotel, and dubbed as “Bloodhouse” for playing host to violent scenes, the establishment was the haunt of prostitutes Nellie Cameron and Tilly Devine whose main brothel was located just across the road at 253 Liverpool St.

6

I have had 25 years of knowledge and experience with the Tarot Cards. They can help open up hidden information and unlock any problems which can guide you to plan for a positive future. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to phone me on 0414 273 104.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 20) THE WORLD is the Tarot Card for Capricorn.

This card shows a Goddess encircled by a wreath of leaves and fruits. She looks free with no worrries or concerns. This is the start of a new cycle. The Goddess is discipilined and responsible. There is personal growth and transformation around her and she is ambitious and organized but she can also be stern and judgemental. She is also ruled by the planet Saturn.

7

Turning left I head up Liverpool St passing building called Yarranma Place, which was the First Church of Christ Scientist Sydney (1920s). It was also converted to a luxury private residence by venture capitalist Mark Carnegie in 2010. Today it's the headquarters of the Paul Ramsay Foundation, it is known as Yirranma Place, meaning ‘place where many create’. The site is now open to the public as well as hosting offices for the Foundation and multiple other forpurpose organisations. At the end of Forbes St is The Horizon - a 43-storey residential highrise building completed in 1998. The building was designed by Sydney architect Harry Seidler and is controversial in that it was one of the first high-rise buildings constructed in the predominately low rise area, with critics saying it caused overshadowing of the surrounding area.

8

Turning left into Darley St, I head down to "Stoneleigh". It is associated with two notable people who owned the house: Richard Jones, 1870–1892, who was Chairman of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, and founder of the Maitland Mercury newspaper; and J. Russell French, 1895–1905, who was General Manager of the Bank of NSW and it was also the former home of Phillip Adams, an Australian humanist, social commentator, broadcaster, public intellectual and farmer.

9

Next door is "Iona" built in 1890 as a residence for the pastoralist Edward Chisholm, and sold in 1908 to Sir Allen Taylor, who at the time was a former lord mayor of Sydney. In 1912 the house was sold and converted into a private hospital to function as a psychiatric facility. In the1920s it was restored as a residence by a developer with the assistance of the Heritage Council and subsequently sold to filmmakers Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.

You can google me at Ruth Marks Tarot Card Reader for all my background and media information.

10

Achievement is in your blood. Many Capricorns start with nothing and achieve great heights. You are guaranteed success if you continue to persevere. If you are ever feeling down in a rut, tired or emotionally drained, plan a trip as travel will inspire you. It is important you take time to play and have something to look forward to. Lucky Gemstone: Diamond Lucky Number: 8 Lucky Colours: Brown, Grey or Charcoal

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 - Feb 19) THE STAR is the Tarot Card for Aquarius.

This card shows a Goddess kneeling with one foot in a pool of swirling water where she is watering flowers which are beginning to bloom. She has a cosmic balance which indicates balance within oneself. This means growth for you is on the horizon. The Star is a lucky card but does suggest you must stick to one thing and finish the job properly before starting another. It is important to pace yourself and this will give you better results. If you put your energy into one thing at-a-time you will be successful. You are always ahead of your time. You have inspiration in your bones so use it properly which will enable you to have a successful year. Lucky Gemstone: Turquoise Lucky Numbers: 11 & 4 Lucky Colours: Blue & Silver

AUSSIE SHORTS PREMIERE AT FLICKERFEST 2024

Flickerfest International Short Film Festival showcases the top 200 Australian and international short films, live action and animation at Bondi Pavilion from Jan 19-28.

One of the films being featured is 9:16 minute Armstrong, written and directed by Dylan Hare. A successful actor, suddenly Hare found himself professionally challenged during Covid lockdown. “All auditions stopped, and I felt super lost... not knowing when I would work next and not being able to do what I love. I had a whinge for a couple of months… then began educating myself in filmmaking.” Armstrong is his debut film. “I wanted to dip my toe in with a short film first to see if I could do it,” he says. “Now being on the other side of the camera, I have a whole new respect for the craft. It’s hard yakka making a film!” Hare grew up in Outback Australia but moved to the Big Smoke many years ago. Thus, the film is about spirited country bloke Sam Armstrong who arrives in Sydney and meets a girl that leads to a date in Bondi. However, he ends up in hospital with two broken arms – “turns out his arms weren’t so strong after all!” he observes.

Films seem to be one of the most captivating art forms, Hare explains: “Films allow people to go on a journey with the story… and do this best by bringing all the elements together (cinematography, set design, costume, makeup, colour schemes, music, sound design, compelling performances etc…)

Dark comedy is Hare’s favourite genre. “I’ve discovered that humour is an invaluable tool … to heal and better cope with the unexpected drama that life throws our way.” Hare has had previous involvement with Flickerfest, in 2022 when multi-awardwinning director Nash Edgerton cast him in his short film Shark. Speaking of roles, Bondi scored a mention because Hare’s lived there for the past 10 years: “It’s such an iconic place, has such a fun vibe and I set the planned date in Bondi to give it an extra layer of appeal.” Acknowledging the traditional Custodians of the land on which Armstrong was shot was also important to Hare, which he achieved by infusing Indigenous art and music into the film, that “added an extra level of richness and depth”. The artwork of Krubi Creative, a collective of three

Gundungurra artists, features on the billboards in the film’s animated intro while Dancing Mood, a song by band Tjaka “perfectly concludes the film”. For young film-makers just starting out, what would Hare advise? “Jump into the unknown … you figure out how by actually doing it.” Paula Towers WHEN: JANUARY 19-28 WHERE: BONDI PAVILION, BONDI BEACH INFO: www.flickerfest.com.au

BRONTE OCEAN POOL UPGRADE The Bronte Ocean Pool is one of Sydney’s most popular ocean pools, and is a much-loved community destination for locals and visitors alike. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said that Council has identified several issues relating to the Bronte Ocean Pool: POOL LINING

“The existing lining was installed to improve the surface of the pool, however, due to a number of environmental factors, the condition of the lining has deteriorated,” said Masselos. “Our engineers assessed the options to improve the surface of the pool, and their recommendation is to remove the lining, stripping the pool back to its concrete base.”

Artist impression: Pool upgrade the pool towards the pool itself, providing a better user experience.

UPGRADES TO TAKE PLACE IN 2024 AND 2025

“The direct management of the concrete shell itself is the recommended option, and spot repairs will be carried out once the lining has been removed, which will leave the pool in a smooth and safe condition for swimmers.”

PUMP AND PUMPHOUSE

Investigations have shown that the pool’s pumphouse is at the end of its serviceable life and also needs to be replaced. The Mayor said that the current pumphouse poses a safety risk to council staff and contractors, and the structure itself is at risk of damage in the event of severe wave action during a storm. “The new pumphouse will be constructed in the same place as the existing one, as moving the pump equipment would introduce further

environmental, construction, and operational risks.” Masselos said the pool’s pump is no longer fit for purpose and has long lead times for replacement parts, which has meant occasional pool closures in the past. “The current pump is also not able to operate at the lowest tides (for about two hours a day), impacting the consistency of pool water quality and water levels in the pool. The replacement pump will require less regular maintenance by our staff and will reduce

the complexity of the current system. This will provide more consistent and pleasant opportunities for people to use the pool.”

STAIRS

The stairs leading to the pumphouse are unsafe and need to be replaced. The existing stairs are not only non-compliant, but also direct people using them to the poolhouse. The Mayor said that the proposed new stair design will have extra risers and treads added for compliance, but also will be repositioned to direct people arriving at

Masselos said that Council’s plan is to carry out upgrades to the pool in two stages over the next two winters, in order to minimise disruption to pool users. “These upgrades will require the pool to be closed, and Council acknowledges the impact this will have on members of the community who enjoy the pool regularly. Other ocean pools in the area are Mahon Pool in Maroubra, Wylies Baths in Coogee (entry fee applies), or Bondi Icebergs (entry fee applies).” “The first stage will be the pool lining removal, which will take place over three months in winter 2024. We’ll be able to confirm exact dates for pool closure closer to the time.” “The second stage will likely take place in winter 2025, and will involve the replacement of the pump equipment, pumphouse, and stairs.”

Improving handling of Electronic Share Bikes Waverley Mayor tells electric share bike operators: “Take more responsibility and listen to the community.”

At a meeting late 2023, Waverley Council unanimously agreed to take action to improve the handling of electric share bikes by operators, following an increase in complaints about inconsiderately dumped bikes. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said that “share bikes provide a useful and green way to get around. For many people, it means not having to get around in a car and reducing the number of vehicles on our roads is a clear priority for Waverley Council.” “However, we have seen an increase in these share bikes being parked in places where they form blockages – for example on narrow footpaths. We have seen bikes blocking access for pedestrians, as well as those using wheelchairs or prams.” With an apparent increase in the number of bikes in the Waverley area, the Mayor says this problem has become more acute. “The operators don’t seem to be collecting and moving bikes parked in dangerous or blocked areas fast enough. We’ve seen a five-fold increase in the number of complaints received, and it’s clear our community expects better from operators.”

Waverley Councillors unanimously resolved to take the below action: • Council officers to liaise with e-bike operators to negotiate more considerate and appropriate locations for the placement and faster collection of used bikes.

• Council officers to investigate relevant legislation and gaps that may assist Council in removing e-bikes that are creating a hazard or littering the public domain. • Council officers to prepare a report to Council outlining outcomes of any negotiations and legislative options. • Refer this resolution to Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Panel for consideration. “As a Council, we are committed to improving cycling infrastructure, and much good work has already been done, with the completion of the Bondi Junction cycleway. In recent years we have sought community feedback on community expectations for cycling infrastructure, which we are listening to when planning future projects,” said the Mayor. “We want share bike operators to listen to the needs of our community, and responsible management of bike fleets is key to success. We will make this clear in our discussions with operators.” Dumped Electronic share bikes in Waverley Council areas

TOP THREE SUMMER TIPS FOR VISITING THE BEACH Swim between the flags. Help keep our beaches clean. Plan your trip. The message from Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch for locals and visitors planning a visit to our beaches this summer.

“We want everyone to be ready for summer in Randwick City. Whether you live locally or are visiting for the day, a little preparation goes a long way to enjoying a great day the beach,” said Mayor Philipa Veitch. “We’re expecting more than five million visits to our beaches this summer – with big crowds and expected hot days ahead, we need to be prepared and we’re asking the community to play their part,” said Mayor Veitch.

SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS

“If you’re coming to the beach, we want you to enjoy your visit and stay safe. Please listen to the Lifeguards and lifesavers and always swim between the flags,” said Mayor Veitch. Keep a close eye on children and pay attention to warning signs. Don’t swim if you’ve been drinking alcohol. And don’t go rock fishing unless you’re experienced, a strong swimmer and are wearing appropriate safety gear like cleats and a lifejacket. This year, Randwick Council is stepping up safety with patrols at Little Bay Beach and Malabar Beach in addition to patrols at Coogee, Clovelly and Maroubra Beaches. Randwick and Waverley Councils are also partnering to encourage people to ‘Float to Survive’ if they get into trouble in the water.

HELP KEEP OUR BEACHES CLEAN

Australia experienced its worst drowning rate in 10 years in 2022 with 339 deaths. In 2023 there were 281 drowning deaths. Men account for 77% of all drownings and 57% of those who drowned were aged over 45 years.

“Our message is simple: please take your rubbish with you. We will be adding more bins and more staff to empty the bins at our busiest areas. However, if the bin is full or you are in an area with no bins please take your rubbish home.

In Randwick City, Lifeguards responded to 128 major incidents in 2023, including five water related fatalities.

“Rubbish left on beaches or in parks can end up in our oceans. If you’ve enjoyed a swim for

the day, look after our waterways and take your rubbish with you when you leave.” “Our staff do a great job and that’s helped when every visitor puts their rubbish in the bins provided or takes it home with them,” said Mayor Veitch.

PLAN YOUR TRIP

“On hot summer days, crowds at our beaches increase dramatically. Access to our beaches can be difficult and parking and traffic can become an issue,” said Mayor Veitch. “If you’re visiting the beach, we encourage you to take public transport. If you live locally, you can also ride a bike or walk.”

“The reality is that is you’re planning a beach visit on a hot Saturday, Sunday or public holiday after 10am - you’re unlikely to find a park. Plan ahead to make the day fun and stress-free for everyone,” said Mayor Veitch. As always, our Rangers will be patrolling the streets around the beaches and fines can apply. “Swim between the flags. Help keep our beaches clean. Plan your trip. These are the three main messages we want to get out to the community so that everyone who visits the beaches goes home safely,” said Mayor Veitch. For any water-related emergency, phone 000 and ask for police.

CLUB MATTO CAPTURES 75 YEARS OF LOCAL HISTORY Club Matto (formerly known as Matraville RSL) has been an important part of the Matraville community for many years. What many people don’t know, is that Club Matto has a rich past which reflects local and national history.

The modern Club Matto is a far cry from the club's humble beginnings. In 1948 a group of five war veterans met to remember their comrades in arms. They decided to establish an RSL sub-branch. This was a huge task in the post war years since money and materials were difficult to obtain. Somehow the veterans managed to obtain a corrugated iron shed. It was brought to site and the Matraville RSL club was born. It took years of hard work and in 1962 the club, as we now know it, was officially opened by the then Premier of NSW, Mr. R J Heffron. A year later, in 1963, the club logo was developed. The logo was based on a sketch of a masted sailing ship. Very appropriate considering how close the club is to Botany Bay. The first badge was designed, and this badge featured a depiction of the famous sailing ship The Endeavour. The Matraville cenotaph is located on Norfolk Pde, just a short distance from the club. It is cleverly designed to show all the major armed services.

The many brass plaques on the cenotaph show the contribution made by the members of the Matraville RSL club.

Next time you visit the club, take a few minutes to appreciate the stunning murals, on the western wall, inside the club. The murals were hand painted by Australian artist William D’Arcy Doyle. These spectacular colour murals dominate the entire wall and is a lasting memorial to our armed services. As the country returned to normality, there was a clamour for dining and entertainment. Club Matto became the entertainment centre for the surrounding suburbs. The club was so successful that in1978 the existing structure was redeveloped as a two-storey building to accommodate increasing membership. In the following years, many well-known entertainers delighted club members. You may remember some household names of the 70’s such as Irish Baritone John McNally and comedians such as Ugly Dave Grey. There is one name everyone will recognise. None other than a young, fresh-faced Johnny Farnham. He performed in the club during his rise to fame and went on to become a singing superstar. During the 70’s and 80’s Ballroom dancing was very popular, and many

WHAT IS PROBUS?

patrons enjoyed the music, skill and glamorous costumes of the dancers. Another refurbishment occurred in 2001. Club Matto is now a modern, stylish club offering new and traditional forms of entertainment. This includes trivia nights, golf, snooker, lawn bowls, darts, live music, and rock and roll

dancing. There is also a courtesy bus. Club Matto has certainly responded to changing times. But it continues to honour its origins as an RSL club.

WINE REVIEW Alkina ‘Kin’ Rosé 2023

Its rosé weather isn’t it? With no signs of the heat letting up, I felt obliged to offer up a review of one of my favourite Australian Rosés, Alkina ‘Kin’ Rose from Barossa Valley! Where to start! Alkina are Barossa based and have devoted themselves to Grenache, as well as Shiraz, Semillon and some Mataro, plus a few others in smaller quantities. Grenache is where the flavours of this wine lies… For those of you who are in the know, Grenache makes up a large portion of the very best rosés from the South of France such as Provence, and this is where stylistically, the rosé gets its mood. Ultra pale pink in colour, and from the severe freshness of five or six-year-old vines, this wine knocks on the door of France and throws a grenache of elegance, fruit and stoney savouriness. It starts on the nose, all those cooling watermelon and sharp raspberry characters backed up by the minerally pebble like character, it’s so alluring to smell! On the palate, dry as a bone and light with just a hint of weight and mouthfeel but the wine is intense with crunchy raspberry, macerated strawberry, orange peel, watermelon and a deft touch of dried herbs leading to a subtle fruit driven finish that seems to hold some lovely white pepper character.

This wine really does sit on the fine line of complexity – a thinking person’s wine and a real wow factor Summer fun drink to open up in a heat wave and blurt out “Phwooaaarr” when the pink stuff hits your lips. Cost wise, at $38, you will find cheaper Aussie rosés - but I try a lot of wines, and trust me when I say, this is definitely one of the finest around. If you have a BBQ coming up, you fancy some cracking rosé for Australia Day or you just want to try something new, this is your plonk. More to the story of the winery, they are certified organic and biodynamic with a heavy sustainability motif. They also have a mind blowing collection of old grenache and shiraz vines that in recent years have produced some of the regions most sort after wines. All the wines are low intervention, nothing added to the wines like enzymes or acid, tannin or oak chips - they believe in letting the grapes speak for themselves and showing off the quality of the fruit - the results are not all jammy wines with absurd oak. The wines they offer up are reflective of the soil they are grown on and restrained while keeping the quality and intensity top notch. These guys are defining, New Barossa.

THE KINGSFORD TO CENTENNIAL PARK CYCLEWAY COMPLETED Bicycle riders rejoice! Riding from Kingsford to the City just got easier with the opening of the second stage of the Kingsford to Centennial Park cycleway (between Todman Ave and Alison Rd). The first stage of the 1.8km separated cycleway was opened by Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch in Nov 2023, and stretches north from the intersection of Houston Rd and Barker St onto Day Ave, Doncaster Ave, then to Todman Ave where the now-open Stage 2 begins.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

WHEN RIDING

When driving • Be mindful of changed conditions. • Slow down. • Watch for bike riders. • Watch out for people using the new pedestrian facilities. • Watch for cars reverse parking or exiting driveways. • Don’t park on the cycleway or across driveways. • Stay in your lane and don’t overtake!

• Keep left on the cycleway. • Please ride on the cycleway – not the road. • Look for cars exiting and entering driveways. • Watch for cars – especially as motorists are adjusting to the new cycleway. • Slow down and give way to pedestrians crossing the bike path and to residents alighting from parked cars.

Doncaster Ave is one of the Council’s busiest roads. Please consider alternative routes or use public transport if attending an event at the racecourse.

• Exercise caution when exiting or entering your driveway as you now need to cross a footpath and a cycleway. • Use the new pedestrian crossing facilities with care.

FOR RESIDENTS

Construction of the project required 52 driveway upgrades, 960m of stormwater pipes, 37 pram/cycle ramps, four new pedestrian crossings and upgraded traffic signals. The project was developed by Randwick City Council and delivered by Burton Contractors on behalf of Transport for NSW. It is part of a $240m investment by the Australian and NSW Governments, in a number of projects, to help economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. At the opening of Stage 1, Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch thanked the residents of Kensington and Kingsford for their patience while this pedestrian and bike rider project was constructed.

“We know that more people will ride once there is safe and convenient infrastructure in place. This is good news for people looking to make short trips on a bike, access UNSW, connect with the light rail stations or commute to the City,” Mayor Veitch said. “The population of Kingsford and Kensington is growing and this route will be increasingly popular as an alternative transport option. “I will also be advocating that the cycleway be extended south to connect with the Kingsford light rail terminus and Council’s future South Coogee to Kingsford cycleway as originally planned.”

Expressions of Interest – Artist in Residence Program

The Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf Artist in Residence Program is an opportunity for artists to research and develop new work within a vibrant, harbourside cultural space. The new and expanded program runs from July 2024 to June 2025, with two artists hosted at a time for four-month, non-residential residences. Artists will also receive a $1,600 stipend to cover materials and engagement activities, and an opportunity to exhibit at the Gallery with promotional and curatorial support. For more information and to apply, visit: www.woollahragallery.com.au before applications close on Jan 31, 2024.

Have your say on the future of Cooper Park

Cooper Park in Bellevue Hill is one of our most popular parks and provides the community with many options for staying active, connecting with nature and meeting with family and friends.

Waverley Park Playground reopens

The new playground is the cornerstone of the Waverley Park upgrade project, proudly co-funded by the NSW Government, through the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program, in association with the Council. The Council received a $1.75 million grant from the Public Spaces Legacy Program to assist in funding Waverley Park upgrades including the new inclusive playground, park lighting upgrades, landscaping and relocation of a fitness station. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the playground is set to become a destination for families in the east, including caregivers who have fond memories of playing on the original playground moon rocket. The design was informed by community feedback collected across two rounds of consultation and achieves Waverley's vision to upgrade the park to a district level inclusive play space catering to all visitors as identified in Waverley Council’s Play Space Strategy, Inclusive Play Space Study and the Waverley Park Plan of Management.

Electric Share Bike complaints To ensure the Park continues to provide the best recreational options for future generations, we are seeking community feedback on the Draft Cooper Park Plan of Management and Master Plan. Take our short survey by Feb 4,2024 at: yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/cooper-park and let us know what you love and what you would like to see improved.

What’s your favourite local tree?

The Woollahra Municipality has an abundance of beautiful trees, with some having been here for hundreds of years. Protecting them is as important as protecting our heritage buildings and notable landmarks. We’re updating our Significant Tree Register and want to know which trees in our local area should be added to acknowledge their heritage value and protect them into the future. You can learn more and nominate a tree by Feb 18, 2024 at: yoursay.woollahra. nsw.gov.au/trees

School holiday activities

Woollahra Libraries at Double Bay, Paddington and Watsons Bay have many fun events happening during the school break and some great summer reading options also available online. Download our eBooks, efilms, eMusic, eMagazines and more! Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/Library/Whats-on/ School-holidays for further info.

Bruce Hopkins inspires Blacktown to ‘Float to Survive’

Waverley Council lifeguard team leader and Bondi Rescue’s Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins has joined forces with Blacktown City Council to promote the message of ‘Float to Survive’ to the Blacktown community this summer.

Markets for Maroubra

Markets providing fresh produce, artisan and general goods will be held monthly on Sundays at Heffron Park and Maroubra Beach in 2024.

New off-leash dog parks for South Coogee and Kingsford The number of off-leash dog parks in Randwick City will increase to 16.

Questions about racecourse hotel proposal

Building bulk, signage impacts, vehicle access and lighting impacts on the Grey-headed flying fox are among the concerns raised by Randwick Council about a proposal to build a hotel at Royal Randwick Racecourse. The proposal by the Australian Turf Club seeks consent for a seven-storey 190 room hotel including a registered club and function space.

Maroubra Beach masterplan progresses

A plan for the future of Maroubra Beach will be put out to community consultation in the coming months. The plan, as endorsed by Council for feedback, proposes a range of second option proposes a $6.75m knockdown rebuild with a new building connecting the different functions, also doubling the female toilets and providing more storage for Lifeguards and Coogee Surf Club.

Burrows Park upgrade

Detailed site investigations will commence into extending the playing field and upgrading an amenities building at Burrows Park in Clovelly.

Grants for community groups

Eighteen community groups will be given cash and inkind support totalling almost $90,000 as part of Council’s latest round of funding for its Community Investment Program artwork project at Matraville Sports High.

2024 New Year opening hours

This festive season, Council's Customer Service Centre, Library, the Des Renford Leisure Centre and Randwick Recycling Centre will have reduced trading hours. Key personnel including Lifeguards and outdoor workers will continue cleaning and maintaining our parks, beaches and streets over the busy period. https://www.randwick.nsw.gov.au/about-us/ news/related-news/december/2023christmas-and-new-year-opening-hours

Hi Everyone, As we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, I am delighted to extend warm wishes for a fantastic year ahead to each and every one of you! I hope you all had a wonderful time with your loved ones over the Christmas break and are feeling refreshed and excited about the possibilities and opportunities that 2024 holds. With the Australian summer in full swing, it's crucial to embrace the warmth and sunshine responsibly. As we revel in the joys of the season, let's also prioritise sun safety. Remember to slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on those sunglasses before heading outdoors. Our stunning beaches beckon and by taking these simple precautions we can ensure that everyone enjoys the sunshine while staying protected. Speaking of beaches, our coastline is one of our greatest treasures. I encourage you to make the most of our beautiful beaches, but always remember to be vigilant about beach water safety. Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or just dipping your toes in the ocean it's essential to respect the water and always swim between the flags! As your local member, I am committed to ensuring that our community remains safe, connected, and thriving. If you have any concerns, ideas, or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your voice and input is central in shaping the future of our community. In the spirit of community, let's also take a moment to celebrate the achievements of the past year and the resilience we've shown as a community. Together, we can make 2024 a year of progress, unity, and shared success. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous New Year filled with laughter, good health, and prosperity! If you would like to keep up with events and news in the Coogee electorate, you can subscribe to my Community Newsletter here.
