“THE GREATEST THING YOU’LL EVER LEARN”
Back in the late 1940’s, after the end of the WW 2, it’s rumoured a hermit was living in a cave under the “L” of what is now the HOLLYWOOD sign in Los Angeles. However, the sign did not appear there until 1978, when it was relocated from the Santa Monica Mountains.
The original HOLLYWOO DL AND sign was erected in 1923 at a cost of US$21,000. It was relocated and refurbished by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at a cost of US$250,000 funded by nine donors including Alice Cooper, Gene Autrey, Hugh Hefner and Andy Williams. The present day price would be about US$1,2000,000.
The hermit’s name was Eden ahbez (or Ahbe to his friends). He was apparently an orphan, who never stayed at one place very long, and had lived in various foster homes. He explained he could never fit in and was always searching, for something.
"They say he wandered very far... Very far, over land and sea..."
It seems he would hop freight trains and walked across country several times, subsisting solely on raw fruits and vegetables, then one day he completely vanished.
"And then one day... One magic day he passed my way..."
He was disenchanted and disillusioned with the world and supposedly "out-of-sync" with society.
"A little shy and sad of eye... But very w ise was he..."
When he showed up in the H ollywood hills a policeman questioned the long haired man with beard, sandals, and robe. Ahbez simply replied, "I look crazy but I'm not. And the funny thing is that other people don't look crazy but they are."
No one really cared ab out him much until one night in 1947, when he tried to enter backstage at the Lincoln Theatre in Los Angeles. Nat King Cole was playing there, and the man said he had something for Cole. The staff wouldn’t let the strange man see Cole, so he gave what he had to Cole's manager.
What he had was a song sheet, which Cole would later take a look at. Cole liked the song and wanted to record it, but first he
had to find the strange man and finally tracked him down in New York City.
Asked where he wa s s taying he replied that he was staying at the best hotel in New York. Literally outside in Central Park. He said the song was called, Nature Boy and it became Nat King Cole's first big hit. It was later covered by artists including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett and, more recently, Lady Gaga.
No one really knows why A hbez selected Cole, but there were rumours he came out of hiding when he began to hear about the racism going on and trouble throughout the world, and he thought "King" was the best person at that time to pass his message along.
"While we spoke of ma ny th ings... Fools and Kings..."
In the mid 1950s, he wrote songs for Eartha Kitt, Frankie Laine, and others, as well as writing some rock and roll novelty songs. In 1957, his song Lonely Island was recorded by Sam Cooke, and became the second and final Ahbez composition to reach the Top 40. Later artists such as Donovan, Grace Slick, and the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson sought him out and he also wrote songs for Eartha Kitt and had another song recorded by Sam Cooke.
Throughout all this his constant theme was that love was missing in the world, and that it would be needed in the future if we are to survive.
When he was asked a bout ra cism, he replied, "Some white people hate black people, and some white people love black people, some black people hate white people, and some black people love white people. So you see it's not an issue of black and white, it's an issue of lovers and haters.
The closing words of N ature Boy are: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return..."

What is so special about St Mark’s Church Darling Point’s architecture?
BACKGROUND: THREE PHASES OF MEDIEVAL GOTHIC
Why precisely does St Mark's Church Darling Point appear to be so individual, so special? Gothic churches surprise visitors with evidence of their imaginative and skilful development of a small range of building elements into a complex language of symbolism. At St Mark's the architectural details tell a particular story, and it is my pleasure as an architectural historian to share them with you.
There were three dis tinct phases of Medieval Gothic in England: Early English (c.1170-1220), Decorated (c.1250-1350) and finally Perpendicular (c.1350-1520). These periods provided style templates for Victorian architects working in England and the Colonies.
The well-known Cath oli c convert and Gothic enthusiast AW Pugin (1812-1852) believed that Gothic was the only suitable style for Christian architecture; and after 1830 he felt that that Decorated was by far the preferred phase. Then around 1840 the Cambridge Camden movement followed Pugin’s preferences in what they saw as their essential role in dictating architectural style to Victorian architects. They lobbied church architects
to make sure that churches were designed in the Decorated manner, with elaborate stone tracery and a great deal of carved stone and wooden ornament. Decorated Gothic churches form the large majority of church design in NSW, both in Anglican and Catholic cases.
SYDNEY 1847
In 1847 Anglican Bishop William Grant Broughton gave recent arrival Edmund Blacket three important churches to design: St Mark's Alexandria (Darling Point) 1847-53 (enlarged 1861-70) was to be Early English style, St Paul's Chippendale was to be Decorated style, and St Phillip's Church Hill was Perpendicular. It was suggested by historian James Broadbent that St Mark's design was sourced from an illustration found by Blacket in the Illustrated London News (17 April 1847). The illustration was identified as 'Holy Trinity' Lincolnshire a relatively modest parish church which has now been demolished.
The Early English s tyle has the following characteristics: it is typified by lancet windows, tall narrow window shapes topped by pointed arches. They are grouped together side by side under a single lancet arch typically in a set of three. The Early English style featured strongly constructed walls and simple details and this is

certainly the case with St Mark’s. The simple sturdy cylindrical nave columns in plain sandstone convey the Early English feeling.
Blacket's choice of Early English went against the preferred mode of Victorian times, but it was a fortunate choice as it gave this church a quiet dignity and simplicity which we see and enjoy today.
When you next visit St Mar k’s, take the opportunity to also view the early English king and queen sandstone figures carved at the doorways. For further reading I recommend Joan Kerr, James Broadbent, Gothick Taste in the Colony of New South Wales (Hunters Hill: stmarksdp.org/whats-on/

HEARING IMPLANT TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
The Australian ‘bio-tech darling’, Cochlear Ltd, announced on May 23, 2024 that it has successfully taken over the cochlear implant business of it’s Danish competitor, Oticon Medical. Oticon Medical has decided to discontinue its efforts in hearing implants –and in doing so, believes it is in the best interest of both patients and the company to divest its cochlear implant business to Cochlear.
The acquisition has been planned for over two years but held up by authorities concerned about anti-competition outcomes. However, the acquisition has been allowed to proceed. On May 21, 2024 Cochlear completed its acquisition of Oticon Medical’s cochlear implant business.
Cochlear Ltd reported on May 23, 2024 that the company “is committed to supporting the 20,000 Oticon Medical cochlear implant recipients around the world and their longterm hearing outcomes. We will work closely with the Oticon Medical team to ensure a smooth transition”.
The acquisition is a win for Cochlear Ltd, and a win for the Oticon Medical cochlear implant recipients who will be looked after by the Australian company, Cochlear Ltd, who has a strong track record for looking after it’s recipients and making new technology available to past and present users.

Walkabout
with Ruth Surry Hills (Part 1)
In this Edition 66, I begin my walk down back streets of Surry Hills.
I begin my walk at the Reader's Digest Building on Waterloo St. The building design is a result of architect and scholar John James, designer and sculptor Douglas Annand and landscape architect
Bruce Mackenzie. The end result is a design that combines architecture, sculpture and landscaping. The firm of Docker & Smith was responsible for structural design, while construction was carried out by F T Eastment & Sons Pty Ltd. It was officially opened in Nov 1967. The building eventually became too large for the needs of Reader’s Digest, on account of improvements in technology and a reduction in its workforce numbers. It was offered for sale and is no longer occupied by Reader’s Digest.
2
I head down to Holt St via Cooper St to News Corp Australia (formerly News Limited). News Corp Australia is an Australian media conglomerate and wholly owned subsidiary of the American News Corp. The group's interests span newspaper and magazine publishing, Internet, subscription television in the form of Foxtel, market research, DVD and film distribution, and film and television production trading assets. News Pty Limited (formerly News Limited) is the holding company of the group. News Limited was established in 1923 by James Edward Davidson and funded by the Collins Group mining empire for the purpose of publishing anti-union propaganda, when he purchased the Broken Hill Barrier Miner and the Port Pirie Recorder. He went on to purchase Adelaide's weekly Mail and found The News, a daily newspaper in Adelaide, South Australia. Sir Keith Murdoch acquired a minority interest in the company in 1949. Following his death in 1952, his son Rupert Murdoch inherited The News. Over the next few years, Murdoch gradually established himself as one of the most dynamic media proprietors in Australia, quickly expanding his holdings by acquiring a string of daily and suburban newspapers in most capital cities.
On the corner of Elizabeth and Cooper Street is the Evening Star Hotel. Established in 1873 it was nicknamed the "Evil Star". One of the last newspaper pubs, it is the pub where stories were discussed and Journos mixed with editors. The hotel was known to the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mirror staff as the "Evil Star" when the papers were printed.
I head left onto Elizabeth St.
On the corner of Devonshire St is The Strawberry Hills Hotel. The original hotel was built in 1871 as the Southern Cross Hotel and operated until the 1920s when it underwent major redevelopment in the Inter-War style. In 1954 an
application was approved by Sydney City Council to incorporate two adjacent 1880s shops into the hotel. The name change to "Strawberry Hills Hotel" only occurred in more recent years, with the name used as an urban locality taken from the former Strawberry Hills Estate.
Heading down Devonshire St to Chalmers St, I pass the Plaza Ibero Americana. The Plaza was first conceived in 1986 as a Bicentennial
project. Plaza Ibero Americana began as an idea to acknowledge the contribution of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking people to the history of Australia. It was opened in 1988 and remodelled in 2000.
It consists of two statues and 11 busts representing significant historical figures and Latin American national heroes. It features a series of busts donated by nations including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, the Philippines, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay and Venezuela. 5
On the corner of Chalmers St is a building resembling the Flat Iron Building in New York. The Sydney Dental Hospital, formerly "The United Dental Hospital of Sydney" was founded in 1905 under the Dental Hospital Union Act of 1904. Originally located in George St, the State Government provided funds for the new hospital in Chalmers St and the building was completed in 1912. The building that now houses the Sydney Dental Hospital was opened in 1940 for the dual purpose of providing modern and efficient treatment for the impoverished as well as a functional training ground for dental students at the University of Sydney. Designed by the Sydney firm of Stephenson & Turner, it is an early and notable Australian example of the Streamline Moderne style.
I
Elizabeth St and the Devonshire St Tunnel.
The railway arrived in NSW in 1831. Proposals began in the 1840s for a railway linking Sydney and Parramatta, with an eastern terminus close to the Sydney city centre. The original Sydney station was opened on Sept 26, 1855 in an area known as Cleveland Fields. When the station became inadequate for the traffic it carried, a new station was built in 1874 on the same site and was also called Sydney Terminal. When the third station was built in 1906, it moved one block north, closer to the city. It fronted Garden Rd, which was realigned to form Eddy Avenue. The present station was officially opened on Aug 4, 1906 and opened for passengers on Aug 5, 1906.
The station is Australi a's l argest and busiest railway station in Australia and serves as a major transport interchange for NSW TrainLink inter-city rail services, Sydney Trains commuter rail services, Sydney light rail services, bus services, and private coach transport services. The station is also known as Sydney Terminal (Platforms 1 to 12).

REDEVELOPMENT MARKED FOR COOGEE BAY HOTEL
Coogee Bay Hotel is set to undergo major renovations, thanks to a decision by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel.
The contenti ous renovations will include refurbishment to provide for 18 hotel rooms, a new three storey building with 13 new hotel rooms, construction of a six storey shop top comprising of 58 dwellings and 11 retail spaces, and basement parking for 159 cars.
It comes after four years of planning and consultation between owner C!NC Hotels, Randwick City Council and the local community.
Panel members, Carl Scully, Amelia Thorpe, Alice Spizzo, Joanne McCafferty and Danny Said voted 4:1 in favour of the development application. This is despite concerns from residents of a loss of “village feel”, impact to existing local businesses, view loss and an increase in traffic and anti-social behaviour.
The Panel wrote i n the Determination and Statement of Reasons that “concerns raised by the community have been adequately addressed…and that no new issues…were raised during the public meeting”.
Former Mayor, Cr Da nny Said, the only panel member to vote against the
application, disagreed with the majority decision as he felt that “though the applicant had made improvements to the original plans, unfortunately they still had not met the community expectations”.
This sentiment was echoed by residents who took to social media to express their frustration with the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel’s decision.
“Locals had no chance”, one resident wrote. Others lamented the loss of another live music venue in Sydney, Selina’s. The nightclub will be demolished in favour of 11 new retail spaces, named ‘Selina’s Lane’ in its honour. Selina’s known as the “vibrant heart of Sydney’s nightlife” had hosted some of the biggest international and domestic artists in the world, such as INXS, Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, The Killers, Ocean Alley and Hockey Dad. It is just “another kick in the guts for the live music scene” as one resident writes, after one-third of all small to mid-sized venues have closed across Australia since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Construction is ex pected to start after a Noise Masterplan is submitted to Randwick City Council.

AFTER THE BATTLE
The Maroubra RSL Sub Branch want you to join us improving lives of veterans, and their families. Honouring those who come before us. Veterans strengthening our veteran communities. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
Have you as a young veteran, ever thought about becoming a member of the RSL and dismissed it because you don’t think it would have much to offer you?
The RSL is a century ol d service and exservice organization that has and will provide veterans with a place to socialise with other veterans away from the workplace, giving you practical advice and support at all times, particularly when you maybe transitioning from the military into civilian life.
This is a particularly im portant time when contradictions and anomalies can lead to confusion as you depart from traditions of the service and are confronted by unfamiliar choices. It can lead you to reassessing your personal worth to society after your generally well-defined role in the Defense Force as a member of the ADF, which you have been used to contributing to the nation and the community. Whether it be deploying to trouble spots around the world in pursuance of our national Defense policies, or at the community level to assist with firefighting, flood mitigation/relief or the Covid-19 pandemic, either assisting with treatment or enforcing lockdown or border restrictions.
Your activities in these areas may well have resulted in you adopting a community type attitude to assisting others, and developing a “can do “approach and a code-ofethics which may not be fully reflected in other sections of the community. The RSL maintains these ethical standards and applies them to our care for veterans and their families, and to our respect and the commemoration of those who have served the nation and particularly to over 100,000 Australians who have paid the supreme sacrifice in or as a result of war.
You, as a young vete rans’ who have served in various theatres overseas and achieved great things for our country may consider that your duties are done.
We in the RSL are convinced that you are needed more than ever in the fight to maintain and improve the wellbeing of your fellow veterans who may have fallen on hard times, may be suffering from service related injuries or just need a conversation or make friends with a fellow veteran during times of distress.
You have so much to offer in this field as you have the first-hand knowledge of the circumstances leading to the traumatisation of many of our contemporary veterans.
It is your input into the futu re of the RSL that will ensure that the League is able to continue the fight to see that every veteran is compensated for service related conditions and treated with honour and understanding of their sacrifices for our country.
The Maroubra RSL Sub Branch is a friendly organization which is financially strong and has well over 100 service members from all services and theatres of war. They include a number of WW2 veterans, as well as a compliment of affiliate members who are like-minded citizens who work for the wellbeing of our veterans and support the Sub Branch. We also commemorate all major military anniversaries, social gatherings, and wellbeing day trips.
With an influx of young er service members we will be able to expand our support to other activities and events through our successful sports and recreation team events which include; golf days, bowls and walking.
The RSL is here fo r you, who together fought the good fight in the name of freedom. You will find comradeship, support and understanding of your experience that your fellow citizens may not recognise.
You are welcome to come along to the Maroubra RSL Sub Branch monthly General Meetings which are held at the Juniors at the Junction, Anzac Pde, Maroubra on the first Sunday of each month, commencing 11am. This is followed by a lunch and a few convivial coldies. Just make yourself known prior to the meeting or give Warren a call.

Embracing sustainability and the Circular Economy : 2ND
LIFE'S JOURNEY
At 2ND LIFE, we believe that sustainability isn't just a buzzword; it's a guiding principle that shapes every aspect of our business. In today's world, where environmental concerns loom large and resources are finite, we recognize the urgent need to transition to more sustainable practices. Central to this transition is the concept of the circular economy — a system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, with waste minimised and materials recycled or repurposed into new products.
The traditiona l linea r economy, characterised by the 'take-make-dispose' model, is no longer sustainable. It perpetuates a cycle of resource depletion, pollution, and environmental degradation. In contrast, the circula r economy offers a holistic approach that aims to decouple economic growth from resource consumption. It's about designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.
At 2ND LIFE, we fully em brace the principles of the circular economy in our operations. Our core mission is to give new life to unwanted items, diverting them from landfills and extending their useful lifespan. Through careful sorting,
refurbishment, and redistribution, we keep valuable resources in circulation, reducing the need for virgin materials and minimising waste.
One of the key pilla rs of the circular economy is resource conservation. By repurposing and recycling items, we help conserve precious resources such as wood, metal, and plastics. For every piece of furniture or appliance that we rescue and refurbish, we're reducing the demand for new raw materials, thereby lowering our environmental footprint.
Moreover, the circu lar economy is not just about environmental sustainability — it's also about creating economic opportunities and fostering social equity. By giving new life to items that would otherwise be discarded, we generate value for both our customers and the wider community. Through partnerships with charities and local organisations, we ensure that usable items find their way to those who need them most, promoting social inclusion and reducing inequality.
In addition to our commitment to the circular economy, sustainability is woven into the fabric of our business at every level.
From our eco-f riendly packaging materials to our energy-efficient logistics operations,
we strive to minimise our environmental impact across the board. We're constantly exploring innovative solutions and technologies that enable us to operate more sustainably and efficiently. But our journey towards sustainability is far from over. As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Whether it's finding new ways to reduce waste, implementing more sustainable practices in our supply chain, or advocating for policy changes that support the circular economy, we're dedicated to making a positive impact on the planet and future generations.
In conclusion, sustainab ility and the circular economy are not just aspirations for 2ND LIFE; they're the foundation of everything we do. It’s a lifestyle decision. By embracing these principles wholeheartedly, we're not only transforming the way we do business but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for all.

While most 17-year-olds celebrate the new-found freedom of earning their provisional driver license, Tiahn spent over 230 days in hospital recovering from two major abdominal surgeries.
Tiahn was born with a chronic condition called gastroparesis. This condition affects muscles around her stomach, they are too weak to process food normally. This means Tiahn spends 18 hours every day connected to a pump, so she can receive the nutrients and hydration her body needs through a nasogastric tube.
The reality for Tiahn, the pain of eating a burger from the local food court with friends simply isn’t worth it. She can’t enjoy a birthday cake or a Sunday roast. Yet despite all the challenges Tiahn has and continues to face, she remains her bubbly and vibrant self.
In 2022, Tiahn had two maj or operations to fix her compressed small intestine. Her seven-month recovery on the Wade Ward at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead was long and hard. But during her stay, Tiahn remained positive and made the most of the small moments – always having a chat with those around her and dressing up as Eleven from Stranger Things for the hospital’s annual Party Day.
Tiahn says, “The nurses on Wade Ward were truly the best part of my experience. I will never forget when the Nurse Unit Manager, Gabi, organised a surprise message from the cast of my favourite
musical, The Phantom of the Opera. It’s one of my favourite memories and made my year.”
While Tiahn’s journey has been challenging and is ongoing, she is incredibly grateful to have the support of her family and the gastroenterology department at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

NAVY DROPS ANCHOR AT CLUB MATTO
Something extraordinary happened at Matraville recently. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Band arrived in Club Matto to entertain club members.
On Thursday 23rd May, over 100 people crammed the ground floor of the Club Matto to hear the repertoire of snappy jazz numbers. The ensemble looked stunning as they took to the stage in their black winter uniforms.
The Royal Austral ian Navy Band has been serving Australia with honour since 1923 and is an organisation with a worldwide reputation for excellence. The RAN Band perform at military and public events throughout Australia and overseas, supporting numerous charities and ceremonial occasions.
Club Matto was ho noured to host the Jazz ensemble and watch them perform classic jazz and contemporary standards.
The ensemble was made up of seven members including saxophone, trumpet, double bass, drum kit, keyboard, guitar and a vocalist. All members of the ensemble are current serving full-time members of the Royal Australian Navy Band in Sydney.
Many popular so ng s were performed including timeless classics such as; My Favourite things, Nature Boy, Hallelujah I Love Him So, Green Dolphin Street and many more great standards.
It was an inspiring sight to see the Jazz ensemble play on the stage in front of an enthusiastic audience, many of whom were former members of the armed services and proudly wearing their service decorations.

Funny moments at Host a Murder parties
Looking back there have been some very funny moments at some of the Host a Murder parties, here are some occasions I want to share with you.
PARTY WITH THE NUNS
One of the funniest Host a Murders I personally facilitated was with 13 nuns celebrating a 50-year-old nun’s birthday. It was a surprise birthday, and they chose to play “Who Killed Hal Capone”, subtitled “You dirty rat tat tat tat tat”. Eleven of the nuns had arrived early, dressed to the max as 1920’s gangsters and their molls. Some were even wearing false moustaches all looking like that they were ready to break out into the Charleston and a couple of them even carried toy tommy guns. I was standing with all the n uns in hiding positions at the top of the stairs in a restaurant in Surry Hills, when the birthday girl arrived, with her sister nun dressed in a nun’s habit, I will never forget the look of surprise on her face when all the nuns dressed in costume jumped out with the unanimous cry of “Happy Birthday”.
“What’s going on here”, exclaimed the birthday girl. The other nuns handed her an outfit and said, “you are playing Silky, put this on”. The 13 nuns were fully immersed in the game and at 10pm I went over to the
nun who had organised the event and said “You ladies really know how to have a good time, don’t you?” and her reply shocked me “Yes” she exclaimed, “they only let us out of the convent once a month, so we have to make the best of it”.
THE FOOD CRITC PL AYS HOST A MURDER
One night halfway through a Host a Murder a very well-known Eastern Suburbs restaurant critic called me over and exclaimed in a very posh voice “You know, I am a food connoisseur”, and I replied “Yes”. She then said, “This is the first time I have ever dined out where something is more interesting than the food”.
Even food critics love to pl ay d etectives and show how clever they are.
THE PENRITH CRIME SCENE SQUAD
They were playing the “Last Train from Paris” when towards the end of the game it is announced by one of the players that the murderer has picked up the body and thrown it out of the window of the train. The head detective of the crime scene squad exclaimed, “This is ridiculous. Has anyone ever picked up a dead body. Does anyone here, playing this game know how heavy a dead body is?”
To my surprise every pla yer i n the room, put their hand up. I burst out laughing and remembered it was the crime scene squad.
Band is an important legacy to carry on through the generations. Building community engagement and supporting our veterans through public concerts is a large part of the bands schedule.
The excellent performance of the Jazz ensemble was a tribute to the Navy and a delightful afternoon for members of Club
We hope to welcome them back in the near future.
So, if your office is looking for a way to celebrate the end of the financial year, the perfect game would be the Wall Street Scandal.
Remember if booked a s team building, it is tax deductible. Your meal, private banquet room and game of Host a Murder can be written off as a tax expense. If you are a member of an exclusive club and wish to celebrate Christmas in July, we have the brilliant Shakespearean game The Maiming of the Shrew.
If you want to celebrate a hen’s or buck’s night, the most appropriate game would be The Last Train from Paris as one of its characters is a princess named Idelle.
During Halloween our most popular game is BBQ with the Vampires. For a farewell dinner, there is Grapes of Froth – which is about murder on a tycoon’s yacht. If you are celebrating a birthday, you have a choice of The Good, The Bad and the Guilty – dress up as cowboy and cowgirl, from ancient Rome find out who killed the famous poet Flabius Corpus Roman Ruins or play Power and Greed all about 1930’s film stars. For your Christmas pa rties there is The Maiming of the Shrew or go to our website to see the other themes www.hostamurdermystery.com.au

Jewellery?
Buy directly from the makers & SAVE!
Being a journalist, I often get a chance to visit businesses, but never before, have I experienced such beautiful jewellery being handcrafted right before my eyes.
I recently had the p rivileg e of visiting Temple & Grace jewellers in Edgecliff and I must say, being there, made me feel very excited and happy. Temple & Grace are Australian jewellery-makers, who handcraft gorgeous diamond and gemstone jewellery. The collection of jewellery they have at their five star rated jewellery boutique beats any high-street retailer, and because they are jewellery-makers themselves, they are well over 40% cheaper than traditional retailers.
Twisha, one of the co- founders of Temple & Grace, took me through the mind-blowing range of gemstone rings, diamond rings, bracelets, necklaces and more. Seeing the collection of loose gemstones like Ruby, Sapphire and Morganite bowled me over.
Carol Stavrou and Eli Baroud, the senior and super-friendly jewellery advisors at Temple & Grace took me through some of the unique jewellery designs they have handcrafted for their clients. 'Being jewellery-makers, we have the ability to understand and handcraft very unique and unusual pieces’ explained Carol. Eli, who
carefully quality checks every single piece they handcraft, explained how Temple & Grace is all about delivering the finest quality at genuine wholesale prices. Clients in this suburb need exceptional heirloom jewellery pieces, and we provide just that.
And, being diamond an d g emstone wholesalers, we’re able to provide outstanding quality at unbeatable prices. All Temple & Grace jewellery is backed by a valuation certificate and comes with benefits that last a lifetime, he said. I was surprised to know that Temple & Grace provide complimentary ring re-sizing for life. I’ve re-sized my ring before and spent about $150. Knowing that they provide this service, free for a lifetime, to all their customers was surprising.
Anand, the other co-founder of Temple & Grace mentioned how they have grown to have the largest range of unique jewellery in Australia. He took us through their website www.templeandgrace.com.au and highlighted some of the unique wedding bands they have.
If you are afte r engagement rings or wedding bands, Temple & Grace simple have Australia’s best designs. Apart from gold and platinum wedding rings, they also have unique meteorite rings. When you visit them, don’t forget to see their diamond tennis bracelets and necklaces. The sparkle

Clare’s Sydney Film Festival Calendar
The Sydney Film Festival is fast approaching. I have my lineup of films to see ready and I’ll be diving straight into Australian-made films
Among the l ist of standout festival gems from around the world straight from the likes of Cannes and Berlinale, our new homegrown features shine exploring themes and narratives deeply rooted in the Australian experience, offering a unique perspective that will resonate with audiences. I’m most excited for Jon Bell’s The Moogai which I saw the terrifying short for at Flickerfest back in 2021.
The Moogai stars Shari Sebb ens and Meyne Wyatt and features the haunting history of the Stolen Generations which looms over this bold stylishly executed psychological horror. Another standout is Lee Tamahori’s The Convert, starring Guy Pearce as a British preacher caught up in the 1830s Māori wars. Screenwest Feature Navigator recipient, David Vincent Smith, celebrates his directorial debut with He Ain’t Heavy starring Leila George about a young woman determined to save her drugaddicted brother.
This film buff is also quite excited to see a 4k restoration of the 2002 Rabbit Proof Fence followed by a special guest talk by director Ian McPherson, and the 2006 modern classic Ten Canoes with special guest talks by both directors Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr. While many of us have seen these films before, their significance and
preservation allows us to reflect on our history, challenge our perceptions, and spark important conversations about who we are as a nation.
The beds will be burning on the June 5 opening night with the new feature documentary Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line directed by Paul Clarke. Other iconic biopics to be featured include A Horse Named Winx, directed by Janine Hosking, which reveals the "story behind the fairytale" behind the world-famous racehorse Winx, and You Should Have Been Here Yesterday, a cinematic ode to Australia's early surfing culture featuring restored footage by director Joylon Hoff. Additionally, our very own Bondi takes centre stage in The Pool, showcasing the beauty of our iconic Bondi Icebergs pool and its community in a stunning cinematic portrait.
So make your way out to the festival this year and join me by immersing yourself in the magic of world-class cinema.

Swim safely at favourite Sydney spot this winter
As winter sun shines in Sydney’s skies after weeks of rainfall, beach-lovers can swim safely at one more beach in the Randwick area, with the local Council announcing new off-season patrols at Clovelly Beach.
Randwick City Council professional Lifeguards will now patrol Clovelly Beach as well as Coogee and Maroubra beaches seven days a week, between sunrise and sunset.
Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch said the decision to patrol Clovelly Beach year-round was made following a 2023 review of public visits to Council’s beaches, which found increasing numbers of swimmers using the beach in the off-season.

Hi everyone, Every yea r, more than 9,000 people in NSW will experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital.
For every minute a person in cardiac arrest doesn’t receive chest compressions, their chance of survival falls by 7-10%.
You could be the d ifferen ce between someone’s life or death, just by knowing how to perform CPR.
CPR stands for card iopulmonary resuscitation. Many of us have seen depictions of it in movies and TV shows, but not many of us know how to perform it in real life. NSW Ambulance is aiming to change this through GoodSAM.
GoodSA M en courages everyday people to learn how to perform CPR and once taught, become a volunteer for their service.
How does it work? If someone goes into cardiac arrest and Triple Zero (000) is called, up to three nearby GoodSAM volunteers will receive an alert through their phone. The role of a volunteer is to go to the location of the incident and perform CPR during those critical first few minutes before paramedics arrive.
Becoming a Good SAM volunteer is easy. To be eligible you just need to be over the age of 18 and willing to help if contacted.
You don’t need any specialised training or qualifications in CPR either, all you need to do is familiarise yourself with the resources on NSW Ambulance’s website to make sure you know what to do if CPR is required.
Once you’re signed up, you may receive alerts when someone in your local area goes into cardiac arrest. By volunteering, you co uld save the life of a stranger or neighbour. Help make a difference in your community by scanning the QR code below for more info.
Please feel free to reach out if anything further is needed. Contact my office on (02)9398 1822, or at: coogee@parliament.nsw.gov.au, or visit us at 15/53-55 Frenchmans Rd, Randwick.
