On the grapevine

In this Summer Edition we remind you to look after the refrigerant in your car, and compare a Mini from the last century with one in the 21st. Like comparing a new “Lime” bike with its predecessor, they look similar, but have improved technology. By the way I’ve yet to ride a “Lime” bike, but have the experience firmly on my list of New Year resolutions.

Again celebrating old and new, we have an article about the launch of “Paddington: A History”, the first new book on Paddington for over forty years. Published by The Paddington Society it records the history of the suburb from the time of the Aboriginals to the present day and is marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Society in 1964. It reminds us that the present day is always an extension of the past, but that it regularly has the knack of surprising us. Like Donald Trump, Brexit and advances in Social Media. Who anticipated these back in 1999?

As hard copy publishers we’ve witnessed the changes brought about by social media, but have never waivered in our view that local communities still have a need for hard copy papers. Nevertheless, social media is a brilliantly efficient way of distributing news so, in 2019, we are introducing a community publishing platform that lets community members directly publish local news online. It is then cross published to social media and can later be curated for publication in a local digital newspaper, or in hard copy. More details are provided in our article “Welcome to Double Bay Community”. Thank you to all our readers for supporting us in 2018. We hope you saw in the New Year with style and that it is happy, healthy and prosperous. As the Scots are reputed to say “Out with the old and in with the new.”

CHAMPION CLUB nurtures community wellness

2018 was a stellar year for Randwick Physie Club. Claiming 8 National Team Titles, 5 Individual National Champions and the overall individual National Grand Champion title – the most prestigious in the unique world of Physie and Dance. Whilst trophies and accolades are wonderful, 3-time Grand Champion Gen McManamey made a point in her victory speech to acknowledge that physie is about far more than winning. McManamey called physie her “lifeline”, recognising the support network, friendships and weekly classes as just a few of the reasons why Physie and Dance is a staple in her wellness routine. "It’s hard to find moments to switch off and find a sense of balance in my everyday life," McManamey said. "However, no matter how busy work or life may be, walking into class gives me the opportunity to connect with like-minded women, work up a sweat and dance my troubles away.{ McManamey has been doing Physie and Dance since she could walk, and 2019 will be her 26th year of competition. Physie is a sport that embraces girls and women of all ages, with McManamey’s clubmates at Randwick ranging from 3-year-old “tiny tots” to the phenomenal Judy, who is still dancing (and competing) at 78 years young! An Eastern Suburbs institution, the Randwick Club has been keeping girls and women fit and healthy for almost 60 years. The community spirit of Randwick Physie continues to grow with burgeoning junior classes (from 3 – 12 years), Senior classes (13 years – Open age) and a stalwart ladies class of over 70 women.

6 WELLBEING

If you were well cared for as a child, you probably believe the world is a safe place. If you were told that people are not to be trusted, you may believe differently. Children generally believe what they are told. Being told that you are clever, stupid, pretty, plain, funny, boring, brave, safe, good, or deserving for example, may cement in your mind beliefs about yourself that no longer serve you well. The belief effects your choices. Many of these beliefs remain subconscious and therefore we don’t realize the impact they have on our behaviour. Our minds can be likened to a computer. It, like our minds, runs on the basis of installed programmes (beliefs). However, a single virus (a flawed belief) can cause havoc. If you seek to change how a computer works you need to change the programme. Similarly, if

Our actions are based on our thoughts. What we do, what we choose are the result of what we think, which is, in turn, based on our beliefs. Our experiences and what we are told, either by word or behaviour, form the basis of our beliefs. We develop beliefs about ourselves, others and the world in which we live.

choose the wrong partner, fear of competing with a sibling can make us fear success.

Good decision making, that is good judgement, comes from managing the drivers of habits, emotions, and self-image. Changing these elements of your life are not easy, and that is where counselling comes to your aid.

Many times, we make decisions because we feel pressured to respond immediately to a request or demand. We can learn to delay our response, to respond at the right time. We can choose our response.

Poor decisions are usually made when we feel angry, anxious, frightened, traumatised or despondent and are made in haste. For example, fear of being alone can lead us to

A woman who had a problem at her work came to see me. She had been recently promoted to a managerial position. However, during meetings she was having great

difficulty dealing with a co- worker who was aggressive and demanding. She became very anxious, tongue tied and struggled to control the meetings. During our sessions, she revealed that she had had a very abusive mother, both physically and verbally. As a small child she had learnt to remain as quiet and still as possible or hide to avoid her mother’ outbursts. I pointed out that she was repeating this pattern when confronted by the co-worker’s behaviour. A belief that worked well for her as a child was now impeding her as an adult. She realised that she did not have to fear or accept this co- worker’s behaviour. She was able to take control of the meetings. Counselling seeks to help you to discover and understand your fundamental beliefs, to decide which ones are working for you and which ones aren’t. The counsellor helps you to develop new belief patterns to replace your faulty thinking. Understanding our thinking helps us to learn from mistakes. We can’t change our past. We can, however, choose to act differently in the future. We can influence our future. We can learn to ask ourselves “What am I really thinking now?” before we make a choice. I put my hand upon my heart And swore that we would never part. I wonder what I would have said

Fun in the sun

PERSONAL TRAINING & NUTRITION

(without swimmer's ear)

with founders Patrick Koutsoukis & Dana Segelov

Dana Segelov Summer is the time for fun in the sun, including swimming. People who regularly get water in their ears are more likely to get swimmer’s ear, an infection of the outer ear canal due to increased moisture in the canal.

BEFORE

AFTER

Tell us how the two of you met and what inspired you to start Empower Personal Training & Nutrition? Dana:

I was in a very self-destructive place after years of an abusive marriage, followed by a bitter divorce and custody battle. I had always struggled with my weight as a child – there was no fad diet I had not tried including an Olive Oil Diet which resulted in an urgent operation to remove gallstones, and later not eating for a year just drinking shakes, only to lose initially and then regain more weight when I started eating food again. I had developed a Bakers Cyst on my right knee which was very painful and I completely stopped any physical activity. I was stuck in a vicious cycle of emotional eating and self-loathing. My weight ballooned to 135.5kg and I was seriously considering undergoing an irreversible gastric sleeve operation. A conversation in a camping ground led me to seek the help of a personal trainer and fortune was smiling on me the day I found Patrick. From the first session we connected and less than 18 months later, 50kgs lighter and a half marathon under my belt I have the privilege of calling him my business partner!

Patrick:

As a child I saw my father suffer physical and mental health issues due to morbid obesity and this inspired me to complete

Wax increases the risk of swimmer’s ear by trapping water deep in the ear canal. Other factors such as swimming in dirty water (eg; spas), excessive use of cotton buds to clean the ears, contact with chemicals (eg; hair dyes or hair sprays), cuts or abrasions in the ear canal and other skin conditions (eg; eczema) can lead to swimmer’s ear.

a Bachelor Degree in Sports & Exercise Science. My father was my first client who has lost over 30kgs and more importantly regained his health.

Common symptoms of swimmer’s ear are itching, pain, a blocked sensation in the ear, hearing loss, pus or discharge from the ear, fever or pain around the ear or in the neck.

My dream was to open my own personal training studio where I can help people of all ages overcome their emotional and physical barriers to achieving their health goals and so when the opportunity arose to partner with Dana and create something truly unique – I knew it was meant to be!

Swimmer’s ear is treated by carefully cleaning the ear canal and applying drops prescribed by your GP. It may be necessary for the ear to be cleaned more than once until the ear canal has healed.

The most effective way to prevent swimmer’s ear is to use swim plugs whenever your ears are exposed to water. Audiologists at Edgecliff Hearing can discuss your options for swimming plugs. The use of cotton buds can also increase the risk of swimmer’s ear. If you do suffer from wax build up it is best to have the wax removed regularly. Edgecliff Hearing audiologists are trained to remove ear wax. If you think you have excess ear wax or require swimming plugs phone 9327 8280 for an appointment.

Habib is a popular personal name throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and is also frequently used (as in this case) to mean “Friend” or, in Australia, “Mate” – No doubt this explains the warm welcome always received on arrival. It is open from 8 am to 8pm, 7 days a week, so you can enjoy Habibay cuisine for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This also means it’s a very popular stopping off point for children after school and Mums & Dads grabbing a takeaway family meal on the way home.

Perfect for early evening alfresco dining or for takeaway, Habibay also provides home delivery through Foodora and Zomato (Urban Spoon). Priced competitively, all their meals provide great value for money.

Hair by Yolanda Yolanda Austin is a Londontrained hair stylist and colour expert with a small salon tucked away in Double Bay’s Elbon Arcade. She has been there since 2013, and before that she was with a larger salon in Woollahra for 11 years. The salon, Hair by Yolanda, is a boutiquestyle, one-woman business. Most of her clients have been coming to her for years. “I have seen them marry and have children. Now they’re telling their daughters, ‘If you’re going to get your hair coloured for the first time, go to Yolanda!’” It is not just Yolanda’s cutting and colouring skills that draw clients to her salon. You see, Yolanda is more than just a hairdresser to them. She is a trusted friend. “When you’re a hairdresser you’re also a counsellor and sounding board,’ Yolanda says. “I try not to give advice, but sometimes it’s impossible not to. But what is said in the salon, stays in the salon!” The salon has two styling chairs plus a reclining chair for shampoos. The shampoo chair also gives you a back massage. “Because of the salon’s small size, there are never more than two clients in at the one time,” says Yolanda, who studied hairdressing at the

London College of Fashion, and worked in Knightsbridge.

Superior quality hair products

Yolanda sources the best quality hair products from manufacturers such as Alfaparf Milano. She only uses products that are free of harmful chemicals and will keep your hair in good condition. ‘For example, the Alfaparf Milano shampoo is sodium, laurel and sulphate free and the colours are ammonia-free. Even though we’re using strong chemicals, we do our best to protect the hair.”

One-on-one hairdressing experience

Yolanda describes herself as a skilled all-round hairdresser, with particular skills in the colour department. She sums up her point of difference as giving the client “a one-onone hairdressing experience.” “You’ll never be thrust over to the junior for the end of colour blow dry. You’ve got me from beginning to end.”

TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN Wear safe, non-toxic sunscreen

natural exfoliator. Choose products with natural exfoliating grains instead.

Generic article about summer Toney or me

When choosing a sunscreen, look for an SPF of at least 30, if you have fair skin. But don’t be seduced by super-high SPF numbers because their incremental sun protection diminishes as SPF increases, especially at higher levels.

Many sunscreens with SPF from 50 to 100, for example, effectively block just 1-2% more sunburn rays than an SPF 30 products. Regardless of which SPF you choose, you should re-apply every 90 minutes, and always after swimming.

Avoid tanning beds

We now know that tanning beds are linked to cancer and are no safer than the actual sun, so think carefully about the risks you expose yourself to when you go to a tanning salon. If you really want some summer skin colour, avoid tanning beds and choose a safer option, such as self-tanning towels and lotions.

Exfoliate at least once a week

Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, rough and dry. By exfoliating, you are removing these dead cells, allowing your more radiant, healthier summer skin to shine through. Exfoliating also allows skin cells to regenerate more quickly, which keeps ageing at bay. Whenever possible, choose a gentle, more

Moisturise your skin

Good moisturisers work over time, promote healthy skin with consistent use. If you do happen to get a sunburn, act fast to mitigate the negative effects by moisturising liberally and often with a lotion containing aloe vera. This will keep the burned skin well hydrated, and it will help to soothe the discomfort.

Get plenty of sleep

Lack of sleep can lead to increased levels of stress hormones, which may slow the production of collagen in the skin. When our skin stops producing collagen, it begins to lose elasticity and starts looking tired and worn.

Drink lots of water

Drinking water benefits how well your body functions and ultimately affects how your skin looks and feels. For example, proper hydration helps flush toxins from your body. When toxins build up, they cause organs such as your kidneys to work less efficiently, which has a direct impact on your skin. Sip water through out the day and consider following the 8 x 8 rule: Drink 8 glasses of water every day.

The best little gift store in Sydney

worth investigating. Clutches for casual wear, party earrings, or simple studs. But of course, there is so much more, gifts for tweens, babies, games, homewares & lamps. As I said, you’ll be surprised what’s in store. And then the real surprise… workshops for children and adults at the back of the store!

The classes range from school touch typing, art classes and school holiday classes to adult painting classes, making Christmas wreathes floral crowns, and much more. All classes at Cicada & Co are small due to their intimate space and it's great keeping the numbers down, so you get the attention you need from the workshop host.

“The best gift store in Sydney”, a bold statement, but one I overheard while shopping at Cicada & Co in Bellevue Hill. This chic gift store is full of surprises. It’s tiny, but packs a punch.

Cicada & Co regularly focuses on a different charities. Throughout January & February Cicada & Co is a collection station for "Every Little Bit Helps", a charity that collects travel size toiletries & unused inflight amenity kits which are then distributed to those in need including homeless & women’s shelters.

Rachel & Anna have curated a divine selection of gifts. Always striving to stock pieces that aren’t in every store. There is also a wonderful focus on local and Australian suppliers. If you’re wanting to send that little Aussie memento overseas, without being tacky, this is your store!

So you can see why this could be Sydney’s best gift store. Drop by with a donation if you can, and see what the fuss is about.

Their real forte is leather handbags. The workmanship of the brands stocked in Cicada & Co are top notch and there are styles to suit all. They often have a men’s selection to suit the office goer and traveller.

Australia’s favourite open air cinema showing advance screenings, new release and cult films in iconic inner city green spaces in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. WHEN: Until March 31 WHERE: Crnr of Carrington Dve and Broome Ave, Belvedere Amphitheatre, Centennial Park

On July 4, 1975, the crusading journalist, heiress and anti-development campaigner Juanita Nielsen went to a meeting at a Kings Cross underworld hang-out. She was never seen again. In this innovative fiction and documentary video installation, artist Zanny Begg and producer Philippa Bateman weave the tropes of true crime and cold case stories with themes of gentrification, corruption and non-conformity: a story that echoes through the urban development tensions and housing affordability struggles Sydney experiences today. The video is a compilation of scripted fiction (featuring leading actors including Pamela Rabe and Nicolas Hope), documentary interviews and choreographed sequences. Algorithmic editing means The Beehive morphs and evolves with each viewing, offering different glimpses into an enigma embedded in this ever-changing city’s psyche.

WHEN: Fri- Sun lunch WHERE: Paddo Inn, 338 Oxford St, Paddington

For something different, why not graze the day away with a bunch of friends in a spectacular location with The Grand Graze at The Royal Hotel Paddington. The Grand Graze is one impressive (and very Instagrammable) Antipasto board. This huge board is chock full of selected cured meats, seasonal fruits, cheeses, housemade dips, pickled fennel and more, with servings adjusted to the number of guests booked.

Welcome to

Double Bay Community

Double Bay Community is an initiative of Eastern Suburbs Life to help community members directly take part in the gathering and publication of local community news.

It’s early days yet, and a bit of a social experiment, but is has already flushed out some unexpected images and provoked active discussions in social media. You can take a short-cut to our local community blog by visiting www.doublebay.org. Anyone who runs a local community organisation, or who itches to get directly involved in publishing local news, can take part. The content is moderated and long time Double Bay enthusiast Rose Sevitt (0418 400 697), is their permanent part-time contact. She also actively visits businesses and talks to locals to gather and publish topical news items as they arise. John Donne famously said, “No man is an island”. Nor is any single suburb, so Double Bay Community delights in publishing news from the immediately adjoining suburbs of Darling Point, Edgecliff, Woollahra, Bellevue Hill and Darling Point. If you’d like to take part email news@doublebaycommunity.org and we’ll explain what is involved. Information published in the Double Bay

Community blog is immediately shared with social media in the Double Bay Community Facebook Page and the open Double Bay Community Facebook Group. It is also selectively shared on Google, Twitter and Pinterest. It is also curated to appear in a monthly Double Bay Community digital Newsletter, that can be actively shared by community members to promote themselves and Double Bay. Beyond that, news can also progress to publication in the digital and hard copy versions of Eastern Suburbs Life. Double Bay Community is happy to support community initiatives and is currently working with Darling Point resident, April Strauss (0414 690 218) to run community network events that bring together all members of the community including residents, business owners, employees and even visitors. Newcomers to the Double Bay area will naturally be very welcome. If you are a charity, or community body, email news@doublebaycommunity.org to see how you can get involved. Part of each edition of Eastern Suburbs Life is reserved to publish charity content free-of-charge. For further information call:

Tips for empty nesters before retirement Your children have left home, leaving you with time on your hands to do the things you’ve always dreamt of doing. But first of all, here are three things you need to take care of. 1. Pay down debt

Now that the kids have fled the coop, you should be finding things easier financially. But if you still have a mortgage, paying this down (and any other personal debt) should be your priority. “You don’t want to be retiring with debt unless you’re downsizing,” says retirement planning specialist Brendan Whitehouse. Brendan, director of BRW Financial Group, says that well over half his clients still have mortgages by the time their children have left home. He says it is crucial to deal with this debt – owning your home outright by the time you retire will mean your retirement income won’t need to go on paying interest that’s not tax-deductible, such as your mortgage or credit card debt. Investment debt is another area that should be dealt with as swiftly as possible. The ideal way to do this is through an interest-only loan. Until recently, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) was imposing restrictions on how many interest-only loans the banks

could approve. But these have now been lifted in an attempt to help the ailing property market.

2. Build up your super assets

“You can look at salary-sacrificing into super, within limits,” Brendan says. “This can assist in paying your mortgage off before you retire.” Salary sacrificing into super is where you and your employer agree to pay a portion of your pre-tax salary as an additional concessional contribution to your superannuation account. This is typically a tax-effective strategy if you are on a marginal tax rate in excess of 15.0%.

3. Review your insurance

“Why pay those expensive premiums when the kids have left home and you don’t need that level of cover any more?” says Brendan. “Also, if you have insurance premiums coming out of your super fund, you may want to consider paying them personally, rather than through the fund, which is eroding your retirement benefits.” If you are still working, one type of cover you might want to keep is Total and Permanent Disability (TPD), Trauma or Income Protection insurance. That’s because you are still depending on your income — so if you were to become seriously ill or disabled, you will still need this protection.

Do you have a question for the Friendly Funeral Guy?

“Have you decided what to do with your Mum’s ashes?”

This is a question I ask families that are planning a cremation. Quite frequently the answer is along the lines of “I guess they’ll stay in the cupboard where Dad’s ashes have been for the last 10 years”.

T

I would love to answer your questions in future editions of the Eastern Suburbs Life newspaper.

It's common for families to be uncertain of what to do with cremation ashes. There are a number of options that will allow you to have their ashes close by so you can remember the person you love.

Did you know that you can have ashes made into a beautiful diamond to wear?

You can take your Mum or Dad with you everywhere you go in a ring or necklace. At Ian J. Arthur & Sons we are partners with heart-in-diamond.com.au. Heart in Diamond will take the ashes of your relative, extract the carbon from them and form it into a stunning diamond. The diamond can then be mounted in a piece of jewellery to become a family heirloom that you can pass down from generation to generation. Do you have several siblings? Each one can have their own diamond made with Mum or Dad’s ashes. Another wonderful memorialisation option for ashes is to have them swirled into a glass memorial. A spoonful of ashes is taken and incorporated into an attractive orb shape glass creation. Crystal Remembrance memorials

are beautifully crafted one of a kind memorial art pieces commemorating the life of your loved one (crystalremembrance.com).

Please email them to: chris@ianjarthurfunerals.com.au

These memorials can be made in 4 different sizes, from 7 - 20cm in height. They are easily transported to remain with you wherever you live, and can be used with optional display stands and light cases. Ian J. Arthur & Sons are partners with Heart in Diamond and Crystal Remembrances and can assist you to have your personalised memorial art piece created so that you can always have your treasured memories close.

Most will know of a local electrician who can be trusted and their recommendation is always a good first step. Alternatively, If you’re new to the Eastern Suburbs you can ask for advice on local community Facebook groups like Bondi Loop, Rose Bay Community, Double Bay Community or Maroubra Community. For those who are not Facebook users, consider joining the local Nextdoor Group on www.nextdoor. com.au. Or you can plunge right in and select one online, or in a local paper or magazine. No matter which way you go you’ll still have to do your own checking, so first find out: -

Energy efficient window coverings

Energy efficiency is a huge priority for homeowners these days, but maintaining a constant temperature in your home could be as simple as choosing the correct window coverings.

“For all the talk about the most energy efficient use of air conditioners and heaters, it needs to be said that combining the right external and internal window coverings makes it possible to maintain a constant and comfortable temperature without the need to use electricity,” said Jenny Brown, National Marketing Manager, Luxaflex® Window Fashions. Adding Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Shades to your windows is like coating them with insulation. Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Ménage Shades are the most advanced energy efficient option available, delivering triple-honeycomb construction with six layers of fabric and five insulation air pockets. This reduces the need to use artificial heating in winter with the Shade acting as a barrier to stop the warm air from quickly escaping through the glass.

to keep that warm air in for the rest of the day. PowerView can also be operated at the touch of a button via the Pebble™ Remote, which is available in seven colours and ergonomically designed for ease of use, offering the perfect fusion of form and function. Continue to adjust your window treatments for temperature, privacy and security from across the room or across the world, using the RemoteConnect™ feature in the PowerView App.

In Australia, you’re legally allowed to change your own light bulbs and operate your appliances in the manner for which they’re designed. For most other work you may need to hire a qualified, licensed electrician: -

1. Find a local electrician

This will be more convenient, and should ensure that you’re not being charged for the

2. Get several quotes

Compare a few quotes, not all electricians will charge the same amount for the same work – but they should be reasonably similar. Check out reviews online, but don’t believe everything you read.

3. Check with other trusted contractors

If you’re having a kitchen renovated, there’s a good chance that the builder will know a good electrician who he or she’s comfortable working with. Get it all bundled in the one price, if you can.

4. Ask to see the electrician’s licence

Your electrician should have no problem with showing you this – or with you double-checking with the state authority to ensure that the licence is valid.

5. Certificate of electrical safety

You should receive safety certificates for any work that’s done.

40 YEARS APART

1965 Austin Morris Mini & 2005 BMW Mini

The 1965 Mini is the best selling British car in history – 5.3 million cars produced. The brief was to produce a car 10 x 4 x 4ft and 6ft of the 10ft was for passengers – an impossible task at the time. Designer and builder of an armoured car, an amphibious tank and a motorised wheelbarrow, Alexander Issigonis took on the task. His ground breaking innovations are still in the other BMW Mini in the picture built in 2005, like front wheel drive, a transverse engine, phenomenal space, wheels efficiently at the side and much more. The first one was launched with great fanfare by a magician, who held a crowd spellbound as he “magically” unpacked this tiny car containing 4 adults and all their holiday stuff. At Edgecliff Automotive, we have an original Mini, which is well cared for... people who walk past the workshop, usually go straight to the Mini ignoring the exotic cars; Porsches, BMW’s, Mercedes and Audi’s.

Edgecliff Automotive 2 Ocean Ave, Edgecliff 9363 5040 www.edgecliffautomotive.com.au

did you know? • Following the official launch of the Mini in 1959, it wasn't long after when Morris Minor Mini became the first British car ever to sell more than 1,000,000 automobiles. • Over 5.3 million classic Minis were released up until the year 2000, and due to this fact, the Mini has become the most popular British vehicle in the history of the car industry. • In response to all of the often accusations and criticism about the security of the Classic Mini, Alec Issigonis answered: "I have created a car with good brakes and control. If people have accidents with this car, it's their fault.", and following this statement, also announced, "I do not design cars to see them crushed". • In 1991, Autocar magazine voted Mini "The greatest car of all time". • The record for number of people crammed into a Mini is 27, and the largest line of Mini drivers ever to form a convoy is 299. • Racing driver, Stirling Moss, was banned for a year back in 1961 for speeding in a Mini while testing it for a Sunday paper. • The Cooper received the highest safety rating available from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2016, when it was awarded a Top Safety Pick +, as well as four stars for safety by the US federal government's NHTSA. • In the UK, there are 469 Mini clubs, and at least another 260 worldwide.

Looking after your car's air-conditioning system

Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics:

Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location.

Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your air-conditioning and on-going ozone protection. When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. Josh (Edgecliff Automotive) and Jeff (Cooper Park Garage) recommend an annual check and a service every 2 years. Statistics say that in a new vehicle there is a 20-30% loss of gas over a 2 year period.

Heat will always move from a hot material to a cold one making heating and air-conditioning possible; energy must flow from a higher state (warm) to a lower state (cold). Inside the system the pressure can remain high whilst the temperature is reduced. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself.

When it comes to opals, there is a huge amount of confusion & misunderstanding by the general public. Most people don't understand why precious opals are so different from other gems.

WHY OPALS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL

opals are just like human beings: we all have similarities; but we are all different in a multitude of ways. The inimitability of opal has a very important side benefit for the owners of quality opals: unlike the crystal gems, opals are impossible to replicate. Mother Nature's patient & extremely complicated multi-million-year process to create precious opal simply cannot be replicated in a lab. There ARE so-called "synthetic" opals; but (a) they are not true synthetics in that they contain a high percentage of polymers or other man-made additives; and (b) they possess none of the exquisite beauty of natural precious opal.

The answer to this confusion is relatively simple: all precious gems, except for opal, belong to one crystal system or another. Opals' uniqueness, however, comes from the fact that it belongs a class of minerals known as "mineraloids". A mineraloid has an amorphous internal structure; and in opals' case, this structure allows for the propensity of light to "dance" within the gem. This "light-dancing", usually referred to as "colour play"; or "fire", is the reason why opal is such an amazing & exquisitely beautiful gem.

Here in Australia, we are in the enviable position of producing around 95% of the worlds' gem opal. We have an abundance in quality, quantity & variety: with each field producing a type of opal particular to that area. Opal structure under scanning electron microscope

When examined under a scanning electron microscope, the sub-micron (1 micron = 1 billionth of a metre) silicon-dioxide spherical structure of opal closely resembles stacks of marbles. This stacking arrangement is where opal gets its second highly-attractive attribute: totally unique & wondrously indescribable patterning. This is caused by a multitude of different factors affecting the stacking arrangement: such as sphere size or arrested development; impurities such as gypsum or other minerals; varying amounts of water and space in the interstices; all these and more contribute to precious opals' much-loved inimitable patterning. This virtually infinite variability of opals' internal structures is why no two precious opals are the same. I like to say that precious

The Paddington Society is justifiably proud of its recent publication “Paddington: A History”. At 325 pages, it eclipses any Paddington history previously published and embraces the history from its earliest, Aboriginal days to it present-day survival. Who would know that a distillery once stood near the present day location of Trumper Park at the foot of Cascade Street. Originally called Sydney Distillery it was later renamed Glenmore Distillery and surprisingly went broke and was turned into a tannery. The original owners were James Underwood, Robert Cooper and Francis Forbes who were granted land in the area on the condition they established the distillery. All did not go well with the partnership and it eventually foundered, with James Underwood becoming the sole owner. A 300 gallon drum of its first production of rum was sent to the governor in 1824, but it also distilled gin which fact influenced the naming of Juniper Hall the magnificent home of Robert Cooper. Juniper berries, of course are an important ingredient in the manufacture of gin. James Underwood's influence is remembered in the name of Underwood Street and Forbes has a street named after him in Woolloomooloo.

The preceding, most significant, publication about Paddington was titled “Paddock Full of Houses – Paddington” and covered only the 50 year period from 1840 to 1890. To have a single publication that so thoroughly records the history of Paddington from its earliest days to present time will be an enormous joy to every “Paddophile” and the fact that the book celebrates the

50th anniversary of the formation of The Paddington Society in 1964 is especially notable. The book is the work of 13 authors, 21 major donors and 4 major sponsors. That they worked together on the publication over many years attests to the scale of the undertaking and is a tribute to the passion and commitment of the members of The Paddington Society.

That they treasure the heritage of Paddington is clear, and why not? It is one of the largest and most intact Victorian enclaves in the whole world To purchase a book:

"Being a poet is a condition, not a profession" said poet Robert Frost. "It means rising at 2am when possessed by a phrase and struggling with short words to explain a long thought". Members of New Voices Poetry Group suffer from this condition but despite this, they recently launched a very professional publication of their 3rd Anthology of poems at the Mill Hill Community Centre in Bondi Junction. The event, run by Richmond Publishing, was attended by over 100 people who celebrated the launch when the poets read selections from the Anthology before the enjoying snacks and wine afterwards with their guests. The Poetry Group, founded by Dexter Dunphy and Rosalie Fishman, brings together about 12 poets who meet monthly to review recent work, discuss the inspirational aspects of writing poetry and, generally, engage with each other in what can often be a lonely pursuit. The collection draws together poems submitted to the group by nine of the poets over the last two years each of which has then been reviewed by one of Australia's leading poets, by Mark Tredinnick. The range of poems is startling. From the Holocaust to unrequited love, from death to separation, from celebrating family life to fielding black dogs – the poets connect directly with the emotional and intellectual challenges of day to day life in Australia. In his introduction to the book Editor-in-Chief Mark Tredinnick says, “Here, in the poems in

When the Muse takes you ... this anthology, is how they (the poets) have felt moved to respond to the world within and without them. In forms, modes and moods as various as the subjects these poets traverse, in elegies and haiku, in sonnets, odes and free verse, they have sounded out small language worlds.”

The published poets are Dexter Dunphy, Margie Gottlieb, Michael Easson, Judi Hall, Rosalie Fishman, Tom Jones, Oliver Freeman, Laurie Lovell-Simons and Jennifer Thurstun.

WAVERLEY

Waverley drags its feet on lower parking fines

Waverley Council is procrastinating over the implementation of parking fine reductions legislated by the state government. It could have opted into the scheme, which will see most parking penalties slashed from $112 to $80, by January 1, paving the way for the reduced fines to come into effect from March 1. Instead, it has written to the architect of the parking fine reduction scheme, NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, with a list of queries. The letter, from mayor John Wakefield and the council’s General Manager Emily Scott, appears to float the notion that residents of Waverley municipality might not actually want the reduced fees. Mayor Wakefield and the GM claimed that further information was required on a state government survey which prompted Mr Perrottet to introduce the regulatory framework for lower fines. The survey found there was “overwhelming support from the community” for the fine reductions.

RANDWICK

Council may backtrack on condemned trees

Randwick Council may cave in to community opposition to the building of a cycleway that would see the removal of 37 trees and the loss of 129 onstreet parking spaces. The proposed 1.9 km cycleway will run from South Coogee to the Kingsford light rail terminus. Most of the threatened trees are in Bundock Street, South Coogee. Shamed by a strong community backlash against the scheme, which has seen protests, a petition to council and the tying of orange ribbons on the condemned trees, Mayor Kathy Neilson announced that alternative options were now being looked at. The mayor said the Council conducted extensive community consultation over four weeks including door-knocking every property along the route, writing to property owners and widely exhibiting the plans.

But according to Councillor Wakefield and Ms Scott, Waverley Council is finding it a challenge understanding the meaning the words “overwhelming support.”

“Trees are critically important for us as a Council and that’s why we went out to the community with a number of options for feedback,” she said.

The letter to Mr Perrottet said: “Council would like to further understand this statement and is therefore requesting the consultation results.”

“I’d like to thank everybody who took the time to have their say on the important project. Council staff are reviewing the 790 submissions received during the consultation which closed on Nov 23, 2018.”

Towards the end of the letter, the mayor and GM got to what most people might see as the real reason for the council having to be dragged kicking and screaming into the lowered parking fine regime – an annual loss of $1.45 million in revenue. This would have a “significant impact on the total revenue of council” and “has not been accounted for in the current Financial Year’s budget.” In total, Waverley rakes in a bonanza of $9.2 million a year from parking fines. The reduced fines, when they eventually come in, will apply to the most common offences of parking for longer than permitted, without a ticket displayed or after ticket expired.

She said it was clear from the community feedback that amongst a range of issues, saving trees is a priority.“The next stage of the design process involves engaging an independent arborist who will assess each tree proposed for removal so we can consider health, species, age and significance. “Not every tree proposed for removal is significant. Some are very young, some are in poor health and at least one is dead. The arborist report will assist us in determining the significant trees so we can consider potential design alternatives to deliver a cycleway and retain trees.”

They will not apply to “safety related offences” such as stopping in school zones, bus zones, on intersections or pedestrian crossings, which incur much higher penalties.

Councillor Nielsen added: “There’s some misinformation in the community about the proposal and this hasn’t been helped by orange ribbons tied around trees not proposed for removal. We want to have a genuine conversation with the community but it needs to be based on information.”

At the latest full meeting of council, it was agreed to defer the implementation of the lowered parking fine regime pending a report by council officers on the “financial implications and impact on residents.”

Greens councillor and former mayor, Murray Matson suggested that a shared cycleway and pedestrian path, like those being built in the CBD, could make a good compromise solution.

Meanwhile, if you get back to your car after shopping at Bondi Junction, or after a nice relaxing swim at Bondi, and discover a ticket under your windscreen wiper, you’ll continue to cop a fine of at least $112 – as opposed to the $80 Waverley Council claims the community might not want.

“The plan on public exhibition consists of a dedicated bike-rider-only bike path paralleled by a separate foot path, but it does not have to be that,” Councillor Matson said.“The way I see it these two separate carriageways could be combined into a shared bike and pedestrian path. This would allow for a narrower width where space is needed to retain a tree.”

Imput sought for co-ed school

Community consultation has begun on the possible transformation of Randwick Boys’ High School into a new co-educational school for Sydney’s east. The consultation was prompted by local eastern suburbs residents who expressed their desire for more public co-educational schools in the area. As Member for Coogee, I have successfully advocated for an upgrade to both Randwick Boys’ and Randwick Girls’ High Schools, however, only the boys’ school is being considered to become a co-educational facility. The online survey on the Department’s home page (https://education.nsw.gov. au/) will be open until Feb 15, 2019. The Department will also meet with the NSW Teachers’ Federation, NSW Secondary Principals Council, school principals, local P&C associations and community groups to consult on the issue. A decision is expected in the first half of 2019.

Randwick super campus to deliver state-of-the-art medical education

I was pleased to join with Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Health Minister Brad Hazzard to unveil a unique partnership between the NSW Government and UNSW Sydney, which will ensure medical discoveries move from the benchtop to the bedside much faster - benefiting patients, the community and the economy. The new UNSW Health Translation Hub will be delivered using an initial investment of up to $250 million from the university and builds on the Government’s own injection of $720 million for the Randwick Campus Redevelopment project. This means students, academics and researchers will have incredible access to clinical settings, leading to better outcomes for patients and the community. The new building will co-locate the Prince of Wales Clinical School, the School of Women’s and Children’s Health, and the School of Psychiatry. It will also have ambulatory care clinics in neuroscience, public and population health. We want to attract the best and brightest scholars, health professionals, researchers and students to NSW and with partners such as UNSW, the NSW Government is creating precincts that will be the envy of the rest of the world. By working with world-leading health and education professionals, we will grow the State’s medical research sector, create more jobs and cultivate excellence in medicine, research and public health. Health Infrastructure will now work with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and UNSW to continue consultations with clinicians, researchers and health planners on the development of the new hub. It is expected the building will be completed and functioning within five years. 15/53-55B Frenchmans Rd, Randwick 9398 1822 www.notleysmith.com

BUY OPALS DIRECT FROM THE MINER

TUCKED AWAY... I say so! Digging in a hole 10m deep, for the ever-elusive Opal, in Lightning Ridge, 700 km NW of Sydney, miners are hooked on the beauty of the Opal gem.
