Welcome to autumn, Keats’ season of “Mists and mellow fruitfulness”. Not exactly, as it is in Australia, but we certainly know it marks the start of longer nights and cooler days, and as in the north, it’s the season when the fruits of summer can be harvested. However, for us in Australia, it’s more about letting the memories of Christmas & the New Year fade and getting back to work after the long summer break. Of course there’s St Patrick’s Day to celebrate and, as 30% of Australians claim Irish Ancestry, that means a lot of people preparing to let their hair down. It’s also time for us to remind readers that the clocks go back on the 7th April (remember “Spring Forward, Fall Back?”). We hope that helps when the big day arrives. This brings to mind another catchy tip “Lefty, Loosey, Righty Tighty”. Perfect for those of us who can’t remember how to do and undo screws and nuts. On a more serious note, I’d mention that part of the enjoyment of publishing Eastern

Suburbs Life is that it allows us to support local charities and community initiatives. So, in this issue we are pleased to feature WAYS Youth & Family and the Irish Support Agency. Both “not for profits” are based in Bondi and details of their activities can be found later in the paper. The Irish Support Agency informs us they will soon be moving to Surry Hills. We are also supporting a new Community “Speed Meeting” initiative run by April Strauss in Double Bay. Its objective is to help locals and newcomers get to know each other and find out what’s happening in their area. People are welcome from all nearby suburbs and full details can be found in the paper. When bullying isn’t just a teenage problem

St Patrick's Day

It’s the day when people wear floppy, emeraldcoloured top hats. When the opera house turns green. And when people drink lots and lots of Guinness. Welcome to St Patricks Day, in Sydney, Sunday, March 17, 2019. Dedicated to a fifth century bishop said to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland, St Patrick’s Day has evolved into a celebration of all things Irish. Sydneysiders have been avid participants since the city’s early colonial days. This year, action will centre on The Rocks, which is being transformed into an Irish village for the day. This is where the St Pat’s Day parade, previously held in the city, is taking place at 11am. The parade will commence at First Fleet Park and end at Dawes Point Reserve where there’ll be a children’s activity area, Australian Citizenship Ceremony, live music, storytelling, food and craft stalls.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, pubs around The Rocks are laying on St Patrick's Day meals and entertainment. At the Mercantile Hotel, 25 George St, The Rocks, the action starts the night before St Pat’s, Friday, March 16, with an Irish dance competition. Then it has a program of other Irish events including “The Merc’s” famous St Patrick’s Day breakfast. The brekkie has sold out, but over the St Patrick’s weekend the Mercantile has a massive entertainment line up featuring Shindig, Shaylee Wilde and The Soniks.

So organisers moved the celebrations to Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills. However, rain again forced the cancellation of the so-called Green Gathering. Then, last year, organisers moved the celebration to The Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. The Sydney St Patrick’s Day Organisation, says The Rocks is the perfect location. “The Rocks has many historical links to the Irish community in Sydney, being one of the first places Irish people settled when they arrived in Australia,” says the organisation’s president Karen Murphy.

St Patrick’s Day celebrations were previously held in the city. But Sydney has not staged a St Patrick’s Day Parade since 2014 when a rainstorm resulted in the event losing tens of thousands of dollars and facing possible financial ruin.

“It is the ideal place to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the area and its many associations with the Irish community.”

As a consequence, there was no official community celebration in 2015 but a determined fundraising effort resulted in the event returning in 2016. The construction of the light rail

IRISH SUPPORT AGENCY ON THE MOVE The Irish Support Agency is moving from Bondi to a new central location in Surry Hills that will broaden its reach amongst the Irish community in NSW.

The new home for the agency, which assists Irish expatriates and their descendants, is the Irish National Association (also known to many as The Gaelic Club) located at 64 Devonshire St, Surry Hills. “This location, being right next to Central station, is ideal for our seniors who come from all areas of the city to join us for our regular activities. It also gives us the opportunity to build a stronger relationship with the diverse range of groups that already use the INA's space” says newly appointed ISA Co-ordinator Paula Cobain. Since 1995, the agency has been providing front-line support to anyone in the Irish Australian community in NSW who finds themselves in circumstances of crisis or distress.

“Back home in Ireland, people have a network to support them in challenging times,” says Paula. ‘We try to fill that gap for them, assisting with services such as hospital and home visits.” If people are injured or fall seriously ill, experience bereavement or other crisis, the agency can offer support, liaise with relatives in Ireland or refer them other specialist services in their locality where they can access both practical and emotional assistance. “It’s all about providing a sense of connection, the feeling of ‘home’ that offers support and reassurance at times when people can feel most vulnerable,” Paula says. “Essentially, we help anyone who is in need of support,” Paula says. “Whether you are young or old, married or single, we’re here to help you meet the challenges of living on the other side of the globe.”

PHOENIX: Pub with a Greek twist ESL spoke to William Cooney, Owner of The Phoenix, Woollahra ESL: How would you describe your business? Will: The Phoenix is a family-friendly venue

that is adaptable to all occasions. The venue itself is quite versatile – from the street it looks like an old-fashioned pub, but inside there is a warm and sophisticated bar with a modern Mediterranean look and feel. We have our own take on traditional Greek cuisine with some amazing wines and cocktails to pair. With a traditional dining area at the back and bar area at the front, we are able to accommodate for any occasion and can fit up to 150 guests.

ESL: What vision do you have for the business? Will: The vision I always had was to build a local, sustainable business that is unique to any other venues in the Eastern Suburbs. We wanted to embrace our Greek heritage and create an environment where we can share that with our customers – providing them with delicious food, great drinks and amazing service to give them an unforgettable experience.

ESL: What was it that made you take the leap to open this specific place? Will: I worked in hospitality from a very

young age. I loved everything about it and always wanted to open my own venue. I had a brief stint in the corporate world, but in 2014 I gave it all up to give my dream a go and

was lucky enough to have my brother (and business partner) support me and turn that dream into a reality. We came across The Phoenix which, at that time, had been closed for almost two years after a string of unsuccessful businesses. I was confident that with my extensive hospitality background and the support of my brother, we’d be able to create something different and bring some life back into this landmark pub. We have now been running successfully for 3 years and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down.

ESL: What are some stories behind the big picture? Will: We are proud of, and completely em-

brace our Greek heritage. We have created a venue that mirrors the Greek culture right here in Woollahra, serving a selection of family recipes such as; Souvlaki, Moussaka, Spanakopita and our home-made dips. We also make Baklava icecream and Loukomades. Whilst the bar is owned by myself and my brother – it really is a full family affair. My mother and grandmother helped to design the menu, frequently popping in to taste test and make sure that their recipes are being cooked to their high standards.

ESL: What other events are on at the Phoenix? Will: Once a month we host a Greek Night

Ensuring your sea change doesn’t become a financial shipwreck

The reality of a sea or tree change can be quite different from the fantasy of walking on the beach or sitting on the verandah, gazing at rolling hills.

3. Have a backup plan

Finally, make sure you have the financial resources to move back if you find the sea or tree change isn’t for you. This means factoring in the costs of getting back into the property market in the city and the likelihood of being able to sell your new home if you decide you want to go back to the fast lane.

If you’re thinking about upping sticks and retiring to what you perceive as greener pastures, here are some important things to consider.

Alternatively, you may want to strike out for another location away from the city. Consider these possibilities and have a Plan B (plus maybe C and D!).

1.Understanding the full financial ramifications of moving

Here’s what retirement planning specialist Brendan Whitehouse has to say: “Let’s consider a scenario where you are selling a $1 million property and moving into a $500K one. The stamp duty might be $20K, then you’ve got agent fees, say two per cent. On top of that there are moving costs, and a lot of people might buy new furniture. All this can easily add up to $50K or more.”

4. Ask the experts

A financial adviser can help you work out the financial reality of a sea or tree change. So before you make a move, speak to your financial adviser about your options. For instance, one thing to consider is that if you downsize, any cash you have left over will be counted as an asset, potentially reducing the pension you receive.

Brendan says it can be good to test the waters first. “What I tell people is to rent out your house, then go and rent where you’re considering moving to for a year,” he says.

Brendan recommends putting spare money from sale of the family home into superannuation. “You can put in $300K each under the new Downsizer contribution rules without having to meet the Work Test or anything else,” Brendan says.

“Try before you buy. Explore your new social network. Check the town’s facilities and their proximity to where you live. I have one client in Coff’s Harbour who has to regularly go down to Sydney for medical treatment.”

Chris Cullen Have you ever felt that a funeral service was just like one you’d been to before?

After all, a lot of funerals are either at a place of worship or at a crematorium. But a surprising number of people are now choosing different options to pay tribute to the people they love. Several times in the last few months I’ve assisted families to have a private cremation service followed by a public memorial service. This simple change provides a lot more options for families. First, it provides opportunity for family members to take more personal time for grieving. Large public funerals can be particularly draining for families because there are so many people who wish to pay their condolences. Having a private cremation service gives family an unhurried time to say their own goodbyes to the person they love. Secondly, a memorial service is not constrained by the need for a hearse and a coffin. This means that you can use locations that are not traditionally used for funerals. Even the choice of location can be a tribute to your loved one. Here are a few locations we’ve done services recently. One family had wonderful memories of Bondi Beach, and it was the favourite place that their mother loved. Friends and family gathered on the headland at North Bondi to share their memories. Another family recently had a memorial service at the Art Gallery of NSW. The gentle-

man who passed away would often go to the gallery and be inspired by its artworks. Guests were ushered into his favourite space within the gallery for a time of reflection, followed by a memorial service in the function space and then canapes and drinks in the Chiswick restaurant.

After a private cremation the family of one lady invited all their friends to joint them for a public celebration of her life. A function room at a local hotel was hired. By sharing food and drink the family provided a tribute that was fitting for their mum, as various people shared stories and everyone watched a slideshow created for the occasion.

WHY OPALS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL When it comes to opals, there is a huge amount of confusion and misunderstanding by the general public. Most people don't understand why precious opals are so different from other gems.

The answer to this confusion is relatively simple: all precious gems, except for opal, belong to one crystal system or another. Opals' uniqueness, however, comes from the fact that it belongs a class of minerals known as "mineraloids". A mineraloid has an amorphous internal structure; and in opals' case, this structure allows for the propensity of light to "dance" within the gem. This "light-dancing", usually referred to as "colour play"; or "fire", is the reason why opal is such an amazing & exquisitely beautiful gem. When examined under a scanning electron microscope, the sub-micron (1 micron = 1 billionth of a metre) silicon-dioxide spherical structure of opal closely resembles stacks of marbles. This stacking arrangement is where opal gets its second highly-attractive attribute: totally unique & wondrously indescribable patterning. This is caused by a multitude of different factors affecting the stacking arrangement: such as sphere size or arrested development; impurities such as gypsum or other minerals; varying amounts of water and space in the interstices; all

these and more contribute to precious opals' much-loved inimitable patterning.

This virtually infinite variability of opals' internal structures is why no two precious opals are the same. The inimitability of opal has a very important side benefit for the owners of quality opals: unlike the crystal gems, opals are impossible to replicate. Mother Nature's patient and extremely complicated multimillion-year process to create precious opal simply cannot be replicated in a lab. There ARE so-called "synthetic" opals; but (a) they are not true synthetics in that they contain a high percentage of polymers or other manmade additives; and (b) they possess none of the exquisite beauty of natural precious opal. Here in Australia, we are in the enviable position of producing around 95% of the worlds' gem opal. We have an abundance in quality, quantity & variety: with each field producing a type of opal particular to that area. Most of the people involved in opal-mining are enthralled & enchanted by the exquisitely unique beauty of precious opal. As an opal miner once said: "Once you've gazed into an opal, And its exquisite beauty known, You'll forever be enchanted, By Mother Nature's unique stone"

Terry Berry at Adrienne and the Misses Bonney has great news that, despite all earlier announcements, they will be continuing to trade on Bay Street for at least three more years. That is great news for everyone. Their history can be traced back to 1906, when Narissa and Clarissa Bonney – daughters of Sydney’s Judge Bonney, opened The Lavender Room on Cremorne wharf, where they sold their own exquisitely hand-embroidered baby items under the Misses Bonney label. They subsequently moved to central Sydney, and were joined by a Miss Edwards, who named her lingerie business after her sister Adrienne. The locals drinking hole since the 1870s, the Royal Oak has outlasted the Boer War, Two World Wars and the GFC as a place to have a quiet beer and catch up with neighbours and friends. One of its great joys is to sit at a table on Bay Street watching the world go by while enjoying a convivial glass of wine or beer. Jamberoo Lane gets a makeover

Many thanks to Woollahra Council and Debbie Geary for the gradual makeover taking place in Jamberoo Lane. First came the little garden between Cross Lane and New South Head Road, then we saw grass being laid on the banking beside the car park, after which plants were put in the border right adjacent to the car park. All looking pretty good already. Now there's a new garden before the Jamberoo entrance to the car park. TIMBER DECK maintenance Decks are a valuable asset to our properties.

They provide great areas to entertain guest in the outdoors whilst enjoying the fresh air and nature. Like most other areas of your property though they will need to be looked after lest they fall into disrepair and need expensive repairs or rebuilds. Obviously we all want to avoid that. Generally. decks will last up to four times longer if they are regularly cleaned and sealed before they start to weather. If a deck is let go past its suggested maintenance time frame it can cause a lot of problems that can snowball and end up costing a lot more than simple maintenance would have cost to begin with. Deck maintenance is fairly simple if your deck is in good condition and can include things like a light sand and scrub, a pressure

wash to get dirt from the grain and edges of boards and then 2-3 coats of sealer. Use a premium quality sealer like Duluxs Intergrain range. Don’t be fooled be cheaper sealers as they often won’t go the distance. This sort of work isn’t too hard if you have the tools and know how. It can be quite labour intensive though and if you have a large deck you might be better off leaving it to a professional. Choosing the right Property Manager

As the managing agent of a property, you are liable for the safety of contractors you send into it. Particularly when asbestos is present. The Work Health and Safety Act (2011) states the person with management or control of a workplace (property) must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the workplace, the means of entering and exiting the workplace and anything arising from the workplace are without risks to the health and safety of any person. Asbestos is the name for a group of naturallyoccurring mineral fibers once used in a variety of domestic and industrial products. There are six broad types of asbestos – all classified as hazardous substances – with blue asbestos (crocidolite) being the most dangerous. Non-friable or bonded asbestos is commonly found in older style 'super 6' corrugated roofing sheets, fibro sheeting, stormwater downpipes, telecom pits, electrical backing boards, eaves lining boards and some types of linoleum. Asbestos containing material is considered friable if it can be crumbled, broken or reduced to powder by hand. For example, lagging insulation around old pipes, loose-fill asbestos insulation and the fill within some fire doors. It is possible for non-friable or bonded asbestos to become friable through physical impact, damage and deterioration over time.

Fair Trading warning to building contractors

In October 2018, NSW Fair Trading issued a fact sheet for all building contractors, reiterating the dangers of asbestos and loose-fill asbestos. "NSW Fair Trading warned contractors that if they suspect a home may contain loose-fill asbestos insulation, they should request the homeowner has it tested prior to commencing with a quote or works," says Shane Foley of BIV Reports, specialists in the identification and control of asbestos. "They advised contractors not to enter roof space or subfloor areas until the property has been assessed by a competent person."

"The Asbestos Register identifies asbestos or asbestos containing material and where it is located on the subject property. "In NSW and the ACT, an Asbestos Register is mandatory for all commercial, retail, industrial and mixed-use residential properties that contain a common property workplace built before 31 December 2003. There are requirements under Work Health and Safety legislation to prepare and display an Asbestos Register at a workplace. Additionally, an Asbestos Management Plan has to be implemented and reviewed periodically. "Once the Asbestos Report is complete, you should share it with the landlord, tenant and any contractors attending the property." Foley says non-compliance can be an expensive and time-consuming exercise and often results in fines and legal action. "For the protection of all invested in the property, it is essential and prudent to obtain an Asbestos Register and Asbestos Management Plan," he says. "It could mean the difference between a safe tenancy and potentially life-threatening activity."

Jiu Jitsu made its way across Asia, finally arriving in Japan, where it became an asset to the samurai; The samurai mastered several fighting techniques such as knives, spears, bow and arrows and Jiu Jitsu, their chosen hand to hand fighting style.

Adam Childs opened Alliance Sydney, Rose Bay in July, 2018. Adam spent his youth training various martial arts such as Hapkido and Muay Thai, however, it wasn't until 2010 he discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and decided to dedicate himself full-time to the art.

New home for bees

Rose Bay Community Garden is built on sustainable organic principles that are in harmony with the nature of the local area.

A local resident and well known artist, Kathleen Peterson, was asked to paint the hive with a beautiful decorative motif of bees visiting blossoms against a blue sky.

The garden provides a place to learn and share knowledge of organic gardening methods, waste reduction, water and solar harvesting and sustainable living.

Visitors are welcome to come see the Rose Bay Community Garden and the bees. There is also a native bee hive, chickens, worm farms, a full composting system and many unsual and heirloom herbs and plants to learn about and try.

Last September, the first hive was set up and the team was able to harvest over sixteen litres of honey in their first season using the new and innovative Flow Hive. Digital Literary Award – last call for entries

The Woollahra Digital Literary Award, a national award supporting innovation in Australian literature and publishing, is seeking submissions from talented writers. The Award is open to all Australian residents aged 16 and over who have published work that is ‘digitally born’ – originating online or in electronic form – in the past two years. Now in its third year, the 2019 Award offers three prizes, with categories now including fiction, non-fiction and a new poetry category. Applications close on Mar 11. Preschool funding

Waverley approves 15 minute ‘drop in parking’ There’s some parking relief on the horizon for Waverley residents. The council has approved the creation of 15 minute 'Drop In' Zones at Bondi Beach and other busy locations.

The proposed locations for 15 minute ‘drop in’ zones were placed on public exhibition from Nov 22, 2018 to Jan 11, 2019 on the Council’s website and in hard copy at the Customer Service Centre. The consultation period was extended from the standard 28 day period to 51 days to provide a greater opportunity for residents who were away over the holiday period to participate in the survey. Residents were asked what they thought of the concept and the locations suggested by the council. The response was mainly positive. “Excellent idea,” wrote one person. “Residents should not be punished for grabbing milk & bread or having a quick chat… will stimulate a sense of community, business and better attitude towards the council.” Another resident thought 15 minutes was too short to get anything meaningful done. “I would love it to be extended to 30 minutes. By the time I get 2 children in and out of the car, that's probably 7 minutes gone. Extending the time to 30 minutes would allow a quick trip to the post office, or picking up a coffee, or something quick from the supermarket.” There will be ten drop-in spaces at Bondi Beach – on Campbell Parade, Hall St and Curlewis Street. Bondi Junction has also been allocated ten spaces – Spring St, Bronte Rd, Hollywood Ave. And in Charing Cross there will be four spaces. One of the residents who made written comments on the scheme bemoaned the fact there’ll be no spots on Gould St, Bondi: “There are no 15 mins free drop in zones on Gould street which is a daily drop in to shop zone for many local residents...especially in front of the Organic grocer which is now called UMU.” Other comments called for more spaces on Bronte Rd and the western side of Oxford St, Bondi Junction. Giving drivers 15 minutes free parking at these locations will mean the council will lose out on $73,000 in parking revenue. The signage will cost $1500. But those figures area peanuts alongside the $9.2 million a year the council rakes in from parking fines. And as previously reported in this paper, Council is procrastinating over the implementation on parking fine reductions legislated by the state government. NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet wants councils to reduce fines for the most common parking offences from $112 to $80. And if the council went along with that, there’d be an annual loss of $1.45 million in revenue. It is stretching out its deliberations on the reductions until the end of summer, its peak season for parking fine revenue.

More items now accepted for recycling Randwick residents can now dispose of unwanted clothing and old x-ray films at the Randwick Recycling Centre in Matraville, where the items will be given a new lease on life.

Items of wearable clothing, including shoes, belts, scarves, hats, handbags and accessories, as well as manchester such as bedsheets, bedspreads, blankets and towels will be collected, sorted and sent to King Cotton, a clothing and textile recycler. Some items will be sold at King Cotton Op Shops, while leftover items are sent to developing countries where they will be repaired and sold to the community at reasonable prices. “Randwick residents are incredibly socially aware,” said Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson. “The current trend for decluttering combined with a post-Christmas purge saw many op shops dealing with overflowing bins and items of clothing left strewn on streets in recent months. “We’re pleased to see people recycling these items so they don’t end up in landfill and wanted to provide an additional solution so that charity bins don’t become the new dumping ground.”

More buses for the East

The trip from Bronte to the City will get a bit easier after the reintroduction of the 378 direct bus service. Listening to the concerns of the local community over the past months, I have been working with my government colleagues and pushing for a solution. The Minister for Transport has now committed the reinstatement of the service as well as additional services from Clovelly and Coogee beaches. The boost to services, includes: • The 339 from Clovelly to the City operating evert 15 minutes off-peak to increase from the current half-hour service. • For morning commuters, the express X73 and X74 buses form Coogee to the City (via Eastern Distributor) will also see an increase to services on either side of the peak periods. These additional services will complement the revamped 24/7 turn up and go 333 service which provides the capacity for 29,000 extra passengers a week, including 10,000 on weekends.

Quad bikes pave the way for smoother Randwick City footpaths Randwick City Council will use quad bikes with cameras and GPS tracking to systematically assess the condition of all local footpaths and shared access ways starting from Feb 6. The vehicles will roam the 525 kilometres of footpaths within the Randwick Council local government area in order to create accurate records of path conditions and to prioritise future upgrades and repairs.

The data gained from the quad bikes will assist Council to effectively prioritise the areas that need attention. “Council has always taken a proactive and planned approach towards the maintenance and renewal of footpath assets and used feedback from residents to help identify areas needing repair, which has proven very effective,” said Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson. “This year we’re adding smart technology to our process, to further improve the speed, accuracy and efficiency of the audit and make sure our pathways are safe for all users. The cameras will be able to pick up any cracks, damage or uneven surfaces, use GPS to mark the location and provide our maintenance team with the information they need to prioritise future works.”
