NEW ROOFTOP SOLAR PANELS FOR WOOLLAHRA LIBRARY P4 DAVE SHARMA, Fed. Member for Wentworth P5

WINTER SOLSTICE Rugby, we’re told, is a game of inches, which implies the need for a fair degree of accuracy. Cosmic matters, however, require even greater precision. For example, in Sydney, the 2021 Winter Solstice takes place at 1.32 pm on June 21 and the daylength is exactly 9 hours, 53 minutes and 49 seconds.

If you find the above facts interesting, we invite you to turn to page 18 and read about Jessie and Reuben’s “Guided Stargazing Tours” and the presentation they will be making at the Community Network Night at the Golden Sheaf, Double Bay on Thursday, June 10. The evening starts at 5pm, lasts for 2 hours and includes light refreshments. You can book online using the QR Code, or call Rose on 0418 400 697

The day before is 9 hours, 53 minutes and 51 seconds, and so is the day after. Now that’s precision. Incidentally, the longest day, Dec 21, is 14 hours, 24 minutes and 46 seconds. But it’s no good asking the Winter Solstice to give back the missing four and a half hours, because that’s due to the Earth spinning at an angle to our nearest star, the Sun.

The above aside, we are pleased to introduce Bladez & Co Barber Shop, just a stone’s throw from Woolworths in Double Bay and the Juniors Art Club 56th Anniversary Art Exhibition at The Juniors, Kingsford. We’re also pleased to let you know that Mark Moran at Vaucluse are looking for Registered Nurses, and that Residents First Woollahra is seeking expressions of interest from candidates for the September local government election.

In Sydney, the missing hours mean less time at the beach and less outdoor barbies, but in days gone by in the Northern Hemisphere it meant snow and the scarcity of food. No wonder they celebrated “Yule” when the daylength crept up to 5 hours and 55 minutes and they could see the sun was returning. That, by the way is the daylength in Oslo, Norway on Dec 25. Clearly what happens in the heavens affects us a lot, witness all the excitement about the recent “Blood Moon” in May. In some cultures a blood moon is a bad omen, but in Togo in Africa it’s seen as an argument between the Sun and the Moon, an argument that they can help resolve, by patching up feuds and rekindling old friendships.

As usual, we extend a big thank you to our readers, advertisers, and all the people who make this paper possible. And finally we encourage stargazers to wrap up warm and make the most of the longer winter nights.

New rooftop solar system to power Woollahra Library

Woollahra Council are taking another big step towards reducing our carbon emissions with the installation of a new solar system on the roof of Woollahra Library at Double Bay.

The new solar system will supply over 80,000 kW hours of renewable electricity to Kiaora Place every year, saving over 73,000 kg of CO2 – that’s equivalent to taking 16 cars off the road or powering 15 houses for a year! In combination with our renewable energy contract, 50% of the electricity for the library and common areas of Kiaora Place is now from renewable sources. Mayor of Woollahra Susan Wynne said she was immensely proud of this project which will have a significant impact on the carbon emissions produced through the Council’s operations. “We’re really proud of this project as the new system more than doubles our existing solar capacity, with a new combined total of 111.8 kW across six Council sites,” the Mayor said.

“We want to practice what we preach and show our residents that switching to renewables is a worthwhile investment.

“Not only will you reduce your carbon emissions and help combat climate change – but you’ll save money on your power bill too,” the Mayor said.

Bayside NEWS EASTERN SUBURBS

Last month, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the Budget for 2021-22. Since last year’s Budget almost 500,000 jobs have been created, and today there are 75,000 more Australians in work than there were before the COVID-19 pandemic. Our economic recovery is well underway, but there is still a considerable journey ahead.

DAVE SHARMA

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH

5

This Budget provides over $480 million in new funding for the environment, including $100 million to protect our oceans. We are also upgrading our recycling capabilities, creating jobs, and reducing waste sent to landfills. We will be investing a further $1.6 billion to fund priority technologies to help reduce emissions. The Budget will help drive innovation through a new ‘patent box’, simplified tax treatment of employee share ownership schemes, and our $1.2 billion Digital Economy Strategy.

This year’s Budget will help secure Australia’s economic recovery, create more jobs, protect our health, and guarantee essential services. Household incomes are supported with the extension of the low and middle-income tax offset, meaning more people will keep more of what they earn. Around 58,400 taxpayers in Wentworth will benefit from this.

We are getting younger Australians into home ownership, through investment in expanding affordable housing and making it easier to save a deposit through schemes such as the First Home Super Saver Scheme and the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme. We are also establishing the Family Home Guarantee to assist 10,000 eligible single parents to enter the housing market with a two percent deposit.

We are supporting small and medium businesses to invest and grow, with the extension of the expanded instant asset write-off and loss carry-back provisions. Around 33,500 businesses in Wentworth will benefit from this.

To free up housing stock for younger families, those aged over 60 will be able to contribute up to $300,000 into their superannuation if they downsize their home.

We are investing an additional $1.7 billion to make childcare more affordable and more accessible, and give parents, and especially women, the choice to work extra hours and days. Under these changes, 250,000 families will be better off by an average of $2,200 per year.

Our economy has come through the COVID-19 pandemic stronger position than most other countries because of our strong balance sheet and the unprecedented fiscal assistance and support we were able to provide.

Investing in the health of Australians, $2.3 billion has been committed to expanding the provision of mental health services. More medicines are being listed on the PBS to treat breast cancer, lung cancer, osteoporosis, migraine, eczema, and asthma.

the safety and quality of aged care and provide new home-care packages. This record investment in aged care will help the 22,267 senior Australians living in Wentworth.

We are looking after our senior Australians with $17.7 billion in new funding to improve

We are scrapping the $450 monthly income threshold for the superannuation guarantee,

Dave Sharma, Federal Member for Wentworth with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg helping to improve equity in the superannuation system. A further $1.1 billion is being committed to support more emergency accommodation, legal assistance, counseling, and financial support for those escaping domestic violence to keep women and children safe.

The pathway to fiscal consolidation lies through economic growth, not austerity. Already this year’s Budget deficit is $52 billion lower than was expected just six months ago, with more Australians back at work. For more information on the budget, please feel free to be in touch with my office.

your Sydney hearing experts When you need to improve your hearing, Edgecliff Hearing can provide you with the best advice. Our mission is to identify and provide the best solution for every unique hearing problem.

MERREN DAVIES

Ringing in the ears and COVID-19 Ringing in the ears is called “tinnitus” and has many causes. Some people describe having very mild tinnitus but are not bothered by it, while others are so distressed by their tinnitus that they are unable to sleep at night.

Over the past year, the British Tinnitus Association (tinnitus.org.uk) has noted an increase in reported tinnitus in the UK population. This may be due to the increased levels of anxiety, pressures, social isolation, depression, uncertainty, and neglected health due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Symptoms of tinnitus include buzzing, ringing, clicking, roaring, and hissing sounds. In less common forms, tinnitus can sound like an orchestra playing in the head!

As a response, the Tinnitus Research Group at Flinders University in Adelaide have developed a short survey to better understand how changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted those living with tinnitus.

Tinnitus can suggest a problem in the ear and should be assessed by an audiologist who can offer information, support, and possible ways to control the tinnitus. Further medical investigation may be required.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA As we have highlighted in this series so far, St Mark’s Church Darling Point was the spiritual home for many remarkable individuals who had a significant role in the founding of modern Australia. SIR THOMAS MITCHELL

PART ONE This month we look at the life of Sir Thomas Mitchell, ‘the Major’, as he was known, a man of outstanding abilities who first surveyed much of Eastern Australia and laid the foundations of a system of land tenure that enabled the development of prosperous lands to feed and keep clothed countless millions of people. Born from very humble origins in Scotland in 1892, young Thomas was to find his way to military service in the Peninsular wars in Portugal and Spain. Gaining recognition for his prowess at drawing, he somehow found sufficient patronage to acquire a commission in the 95th Regiment (of Light Brigade fame), where he came to the attention of his superior officers and eventually the Duke of Wellington himself. Becoming known as the “Duke’s famous draughtsman”, he was admired for his capability at turning topographical surveys into actual battle plans. Until 1827, the then Captain Mitchell served the military as an army intelligence officer and surveyor. In 1818 he had married the daughter of General Richard Blunt with whom he had served

in Lisbon. He became a very successful family man and he and his wife Mary had twelve children, five of whom pre-deceased their father.

With peace in Europe, Thomas’ military prospects dimmed, and he sought gainful work in a civil capacity. Through influential patronage he was offered a position as deputy Surveyor-General to an ailing John Oxley in the colony of New South Wales. He accepted an offer from Governor Darling and the family set sail for Sydney. Shortly thereafter, began a career of 27 years as Surveyor-General for the new colony. Over that period the population of Australia rose from 56,000 to 793,000 at the time of his death. Mitchell had his work cut out for him as settlement was constrained by the lack of proper surveys and he was charged with this function for the whole of NSW which included virtually all of Australia until the colonies separated. A controversial character, Mitchell’s time as Surveyor-General was marked by chronic disputes with various Governors. There is a wonderful biography by JHL Cumpston which tells in great detail the machinations of his complex professional career in Australia, including conducting the last known duel in Australia with Stuart Donaldson, a leading politician with whom Mitchell had taken offence. After three volleys were fired, both combatants left the field uninjured. Major Mitchell was a man of his age. He was essentially an ‘establishment’ figure, a product of the aristocratic age when

advancement was largely dependent on patronage. He was a man of great selfbelief and rather refined tastes of an artistic nature. His legacy includes the wonderful home, Carthona, which still graces the foreshore of Double Bay.

Thomas Mitchell, by Gordon H. Woodhouse,

Courtesy of State Library of Victoria.

Next month, we shall continue his story with a closer look at his famous explorations which included discovering and surveying Australia Felix. Through the prism of this ‘man of his time’, we shall also look more closely at how European settlers viewed the First Nations population on first contact - and the fascinating role of the women in his life. ACTIVE AGEING Active ageing is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years.

Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Home Sweet Home Nursing Care provides care and support to allow older adults to gain or uphold personal resilience, independence and autonomy, whilst maintaining social roles, activities and relationships enabling them to live a productive lifestyle. Apart from appropriate medical care our role is to empower people to enjoy their later years, and wherever possible allow them to stay in their home environment. “Without hesitation, I highly recommend Home Sweet Home for in-home care

services and will use this excellent company for all my mother’s home care. As experienced nurses, Karen and Marella (the business owners) immediately understand the needs of the client and are able to effectively match the right care-giver to the situation. Furthermore, even when I had not engaged a care-giver, Karen and Marella generously provided their nursing advice and care recommendations to support my mother. What sets them apart from their competitors is their empathetic and knowledgeable care for their clients”.

Stephanie Thornton

If you, or a loved one, value the idea of being positive and empowered in your later years please us a call on the number below, or visit our website for more information.

The Gap

Clovelly St

I begin my walk at The Gap Bluff. From 1941-59 this site was used as the NSW School of Artillery. Trainee gunners from Australia and NZ attended the school to learn the principles of moving, mounting and firing large guns. All that remains now of the administrative complex are concrete footings, the buttressed retaining wall and the toilet block. The oldest building(1895) is used as a caretakers cottage, which stored ammunition for the Gap Bluff practice battery. The 1938 building is now a function centre.

2

On Cliff St is the entrance to HMAS Watson, a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base commissioned in 1945 (after three years operating as HMAS Radar), the base served as the RAN's radar training school. In 1956, torpedo and antisubmarine warfare training were relocated to the base, and by 2011, Watson was the main maritime warfare training base, as well as providing post-entry education for maritime warfare officers, training for combat system and electronic warfare sailors, and command training.

3

At the end of Cliff St is Camp Cove Beach one of Sydney Harbour's finest sandy beaches. At the northern end of the Camp Cove Beach there is a rock shelter, which shows evidence of habitation by the local Aboriginal people. Governor Phillip and the First Fleet rested for a night in Camp Cove before landing at Sydney Cove in 1788. The bountiful nature of the area was also recognised by the early European settlers and a fishery was set up nearby in 1792 to help feed the new settlement at Sydney Cove. Just past Camp Cove Kiosk are steps that take you onto the South Head Heritage Trail. You can't miss the historical cannon and 1870s cobblestone road!

I pass the famous nudist beach Lady Bay. The Bay has carried a number of names including 'Haul', Ladies 'Haul', and 'Lady Jane' - fish were often netted off it, lady swimmers hauled up the cliff on ropes with Lady Jane possibly having been an allusion to a principal character in the Gilbert & Sullivan opera, Patience.

7

6

At the most southern tip of the peninsula is South Head. The Hornby Lighthouse keepers cottage, built in 1840s, designed by Colonial Architect Mortimer Lewis, remote and isolated on the windswept cliff it looks out towards The Heads and Manly. Just past it is the red and white candy striped lighthouse Hornby Lighthouse. A solid sandstone tower, which marks the southern entrance to Port Jackson and Sydney Harbour, as well as lighting the South Reef, a ledge of submerged rocks. It is the third oldest lighthouse in NSW. Also designed by Mortimer Lewis.

I head back on the same trail onto Camp Cove beach, then onto Cliff St, taking a right turn onto Victoria St, then a left onto Cove St. The Cove St Reserve is quite significant because there was a freshwater pond. Sometimes called the Duck Pond or the Wild Duck Pool, it was formed by a spring where a small park now sits. The combination of fresh water and easy access to the waters of Port Jackson made this location important to the Cadigal (Gadigal) people who occupied the southern reaches of the harbour. They made intensive use of Sydney harbour both for fishing and for collecting shellfish, and Camp Cove was a great launching place for canoes and also a camp site base

Bladez: New cutting-edge Double Bay barber

Good old-fashioned service in a stylish wrapping is how you could describe the Bladez & Co shop. Yet though a top barber service is offered, it aims for more. “We want to offer an experience – not just a service,” says Bladez & Co Business Manager, Nika Rahmani. “We believe in strong relationships with everyone who walks through our doors – making people feel at home and comfortable; a space where our customers feel pampered from the moment they walk in.”

The staff of barbers offer a high level of personal service. They take the time to chat with clients plus offer complimentary coffee or other beverage and thoroughly explain the product range.

Set in fashionable Kiaora Place, Double Bay, Bladez & Co’s sleek shop design draws people in with a confident but also inviting look. Featuring an open feel with chic black and white décor, once inside, customers discover this modern barber not only offers the latest in premium products and techniques but also has traditional specialities – the ‘hot towel shave’ being particularly popular.

With the average haircut only costing $40, it’s no wonder Bladez & Co is attracting a raft of returning customers. The hot towel shave’s traditional taste of luxury only costs $40. Other popular requests are specialty haircuts, including the skin fade – which is only $50.

“We have regulars who just come in for our hot towel shaves; after lathering on facial soap, the barber shaves with a cut-throat razor then applies a hot towel,” she explains. Though open only since December – making it the ‘new kid on the block’, a wealth of experience is offered: “Sam, the owner, has had over 15 years’ hairdressing experience, and I’ve been in the management and hairdressing industry for about eight years. Double Bay was a drawcard for their new business. “I love the area and making everyone feel comfortable when they walk in,” Nika enthuses.

Attracting great feedback is the price point, which offers very good value for money – especially for Double Bay: “We aim to give more than what our price is, and I can tell that our customers are really happy with what they pay and receive,” Nika observes.

Though clients mainly are teens to mid-50s, all ages are welcome. And all haircut styles are catered for – plus re-styles, beard trims, line-ups, colours, keratin, hair treatments and facial masks. Bladez & Co is open seven days and customers can just walk-in, however if anyone is on a time limit, appointments can be made. Paula Towers

BONDI BLITZ:

THE SUBMARINE ATTACK ON THE EASTERN SUBURBS Most of us have heard something about the Japanese mini submarine attack on Sydney Harbour in 1942. But not so many people have heard about the attack on Bondi and neighbouring suburbs by a much larger, full-sized Japanese submarine a week later.

Minutes after midnight on June 8, 1942, residents in Simpson St, Bondi were jolted from their slumbers by a massive impact. It was so violent, they thought their homes had been hit by an earthquake. In fact, the smoking crater out in the street resulted from a shelling attack by a Japanese submarine several kilometres off the coast. Coastal observers saw a series of flashes out to sea. Then the I-24 class sub, commanded by Hiroshi Hanabusa, submerged and headed north like a migrating whale. Ten artillery rounds had been fired into the Eastern suburbs during the five minute barrage from the sub’s five and a half inch deck guns. The impact in Simpson Street, Bondi, was the most severe. Michael Sturma, Professor of

History at Murdoch University in Western Australia, says it “burrowed into the ground seven feet, cracked the road surface and broke a water main. Local residents were convinced they had experienced an earthquake.” The impact also destroyed part of a house, turning it into knee-deep rubble. Other shells rained down on Bellevue Hill and Rose Bay. The rear sections of two cottages in Bradley Avenue, Bellevue Hill were destroyed but no-one was hurt. There were a couple of minor injuries in Rose Bay and the wall of a Woollahra shop had a demolition job carried out on it courtesy of Commander Hanabusa and his crew.

SEAPLANE BASE REAL TARGET?

It has been suggested that the target might have been the Harbour Bridge, or the seaplane base at Rose Bay, but the shells fell short. Others have said the attack was indiscriminate. Defence and strategic studies scholar James De Leo states “My personal opinion is that anything was the target.” The prime aim may have been to instil fear. Writing on a website called Backyard Battlefields, De Leo observes: “Despite the fact that no-one was killed, the

Devastation in Simpson St, Bondi attack caused widespread panic that a Japanese invasion was imminent and it caused many Eastern suburb residents to flee.” It was a case of ‘Goodbye Bondi, hello Blue Mountains’ as hordes of panicked Eastern Suburbs residents left the city. And, yes, in case you are wondering, property prices headed south. After these events, a "brown-out" was rigidly enforced on the entire NSW coast for a distance of ten miles inland. All lights facing the sea had to be blacked out and other lights thoroughly screened.

Meanwhile, the bombardments prompted authorities to immediately upgrade coastal defences. This explains some of the military fortifications and tunnels that survive today on the rocky headlands of the Eastern suburbs. Others date back to the Crimean War of the 1850s, when fear of an invasion from Russia was high in our minds. Suffice to say, the residents of this country, and the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney in particular, have a long-entrenched cultural fear of seaborne attack and invasion. Tony Maguire

Vu iz dos gesele

(Where is the little street)?

Acclaimed Australian artist Wendy Sharpe will take over the walls of Sydney Jewish Museum’s gallery space, using a large-scale painted mural to tell her family’s stories from their Ukrainian hometown of Kamianets-Podilskyi.

“My ancestors’ escape from their homeland is just one of many thousands of similar stories of chance survival or planned migration. No words can describe their bravery in the face of intense antisemitism.” The artist will paint directly onto the Museum’s walls, depicting a colourful installation of streetscapes and snippets of her own nostalgic memories from her recent trip to Ukraine. For just eight weeks, visitors to the exhibition will be able to trace the memories of Wendy and her ancestors, until the mural is painted over and returned to memory. The title of the exhibition, Vu iz dos gesele (Where is the little street)?, is a song that the artist’s grandmother used to sing in Yiddish and Russian. Though Wendy never met her grandmother, this song links to her and also has resonance with Jews and displaced people more widely. Wendy Sharpe is the only child of British parents who immigrated to Australia in the 1950s, settling in Sydney. Her mother, Marjorie, born in Yorkshire, wasn't Jewish, but her father, writer and historian Alan Sharpe

was of Russian Jewish heritage. His parents were Ben and Bessie Cohen (née Fishman). Ben died at a young age leaving Bessie a widow with two young sons. Bessie eventually married Dave Shapavitch (Sharpe). In the early 1900s, Bessie Fishman's relatives escaped pogroms, fleeing Kamianets-Podilskyi, then part of Russia, now Ukraine, settling in London as refugees. Kamianets-Podilskyi has a dark history, extending beyond the early 20th century pogroms. The town was the site of the August 1941 massacre where the Nazis murdered almost 30,000 Jews (12,000 local Jews and 18,000 Jews from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania).

Wendy Sharpe. Photograph by Charmaine Lyons

In 2019, the artist visited Kamianets-Podilskyi with her cousin Ruth Fishman to learn more about their family history. During the trip Wendy made extensive sketches, drawings and paintings in notebooks, which will be transformed onto the walls of the Museum’s gallery.

Just over a year ago, Randwick-based Sydney Jewish Choral Society (SJCS) performed to a packed Carnegie Hall in New York, part of a 250-strong chorus of international singers in a concert presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) Now, with travel restrictions in force, there’s little prospect of an international performance in the near future. But the choir is delighted to be performing in Blackheath in August. Anne Spira, SJCS Chairperson, says, “We’ve been invited to perform in the biennial Blackheath Choir Festival, our third performance at this wonderful celebration of singers from across NSW. We’ll perform in Italian, English, Hebrew and Yiddish — we sing in many genres and languages.” “We welcome our next challenge,” Spira adds. “We thrive on performances in the community. In our 35-year history, we’ve reached audiences at the Sydney Town Hall, the Sydney Opera House, The Great Synagogue, aged care facilities and many other venues.” SJCS Musical Director Rose Grausman has lived in Waverley for 30 years, leading the choir during all that time. Born in Russia, Rose trained at the Moscow Musical College and taught musically talented children before migrating to Australia. In

Sydney, Rose has taught music in schools and privately, and was a conductor with the Sydney Children’s Choir and Singers 2000. Like Grausman, many of the choir’s members were born overseas. They are of all ages and come from a variety of countries, cultures and musical backgrounds, but all are linked by their love of song. “Wherever we sing,” Grausman says, “we’re a community. Everyone’s like family.” New member Alex Read, from Parsley Bay, joined in May, when rehearsals resumed after pandemic restrictions eased. “I’d heard about the choir, and welcomed the chance to be part of a musical community, doing something that makes me feel good.” Read adds, “I’m excited to sing in the Blue Mountains Festival and in other performances — this choir seems to have many opportunities! The singers are lovely people and have been very welcoming.”

ANGER OVER DRASTIC CUTS TO BUS SERVICES Community fury is mounting over the slashing of buses services in the south east, with 25 services being cut and 23 changed. Activist and community leader Maria Poulos Conklin, who has led the campaign against a planned La Perouse cruise ship terminal, is fighting the bus cuts alongside local MPs and Randwick Council.

yet they want to cut our local services. With thousands of new residents moving to the area, we need mass transit solutions.”

Having built up a large social network base through her Save the Bay page on Facebook, Maria is now providing a forum for community outrage over the bus cuts, which she says are designed to get more people travelling on the unpopular Light Rail.

Maria says the NSW government’s move to slash bus routes and divert passengers to the $3 billion Light Rail is the first step in a policy that will see buses being privatised.

“These cuts are a disaster for people in the south east,” Maria said. “The thing is, the Light Rail is a recreational mode of travel serving people going to the Showground or Randwick Racecourse. Unlike buses, it is not suitable for the elderly or disabled, who are not able to hop on and off public transport easily. For commuters, it’s much too slow. It makes my blood boil that people will now be deprived of their bus services to destinations like St Vincent’s Hospital and Circular Quay. “We have one of the largest residential developments in Australia at Eastgardens,

Suburbs impacted by the bus service changes include Eastgardens, Pagewood, Maroubra, Little Bay, Malabar, Botany, Coogee, Kingsford, Kensington, Mascot, Rosebery, Waterloo, Zetland, Randwick, Waverley and Bondi Junction.

Michael Daley, Labor member for Maroubra, agrees. “In a very dishonest sleight of hand, it just so happens that these massive bus cuts will also make our local network more attractive for a private operator to purchase,” he told Eastern Suburbs Life. “It’s a lot more attractive to run a private operation with fewer routes because a greater profit can be made. “When our bus network is privatised there will be even more cuts, more routes cancelled, less frequent services, bus stops will be taken away and people’s lives will be even worse. This is what happens with Liberal Governments.”

Maria Poulos Conklin is furious about cuts to Eastern Suburbs bus services As well as forcing bus passengers onto the Light Rail, the move will push more people to drive on the Eastern suburbs’ already congested roads, according to Labor member for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill. Dr O’Neill, who is running a petition against the cuts, has called the state government’s move “incredibly short sighted.” Transport Minister Andrew Constance has admitted to transport planning myopia by his government, conceding recently that because of the population explosion around Green Square, “we’ve seen planning get ahead of mass transit solutions.” At the same time, he has defended the south east bus cuts, saying people using the

25 services the government is removing will have alternate services available. With the Light Rail, there will be 40-45% increases in passenger capacity during peak hours. Want to let Mr Constance what you think? Email: office@constance.minister.nsw.gov.au You can also participate in a survey about the bus cuts being conducted by Transport for NSW – just visit the www.mysydney.nsw.gov.au home page. But you’d better be quick, because the survey cut-off date is June 18. Once community feedback has been assessed, the changed bus services will be introduced later in the year. Tony Maguire

$1 million reward offered to find Revelle’s killer

VOICE

YARRA BAY

16FT SKIFF SAILING CLUB

AD HERE Revelle Balmain was a beautiful 22-year-old about to start a new life

Revelle Balmain disappeared in Kingsford 27 years ago. The beautiful model had been moonlighting as an escort and had seen a client at a house in McNair Ave. After allegedly being dropped off at Kingsford’s Red Tomato Inn, the 22-year-old was never seen again. But now NSW Police have posted a $1 million reward which it is hoped will bring her killer to justice. The prime person of interest in the disappearance and murder of Revelle Balmain is Gavin Samer, who lived in McNair Ave with his girlfriend. The girlfriend was away interstate when Samer booked the appointment that brought Revelle to his door in the late afternoon of Saturday November 5, 1994. In fact, Samer was later to tell an inquest, his girlfriend unwittingly subsidised the sex session he had with Revelle because he hocked her clarinet to pay for it. Samer, aged 26 at the time, said that afterwards he dropped her at the Red Tomato Inn (now Churchills Sports Bar) on Five Ways. He claimed he purchased cider at the bottle shop there and that she went inside the pub. However, there was no record of the cider sale. Pub staff and patrons questioned by police could not recall seeing the girl. But what is certain is the fact that she met with foul play.

Revelle’s parents Jan and Ivor, both now deceased, distributed hundreds of leaflets about her disappearance. They attended the 1999 Coroner’s hearing where Gavin Samer gave evidence and was named as a person of interest. The boss of the escort agency Revelle worked for, Select Companions, also gave evidence at the enquiry. Zoran Stanojevic said Revelle had been due to keep another appointment later that night, but she did not show up. Revelle is known to have still been alive at 7.15pm when she talked to a friend on the phone. Since the Coroner’s hearing, little in the way of evidence has emerged, prompting the raising of the previous reward of $250,000 to $1 million for information leading to a conviction. Police are hopeful that a witness or someone else with vital information could now come out of the woodwork and justice will be served over the murder of Revelle Balmain.

Revelle’s personal effects were found scattered around four Kingsford streets. One of her cork-heeled sandals was found in the street, another in a garbage bin. 20 COUNCIL NEWS WOOLLAHRA

Zero emissions Woollahra survey

Council has been working to ensure measures to address climate change are included in its plans, policies and works programs. Significant recent sustainability projects have included the installation addition of solar panels at Double Bay Library, which will supply 50% of its power.

Ed 30, June, 2021

WAVERLEY

Concerns over Bondi supermarket plan

Waverley Council is concerned about traffic impacts of a planned Woolworths Metro Supermarket in Hall Street, Bondi. A developer wants to convert three ground floor shops at the base of a newly-built fivestorey unit block into a Woolies Metro that will operate 6am-12am, seven days a week. But a report to the council’s traffic committee expressed concerns about the pedestrian impacts and loss of parking which would be caused by the operation of the supermarket.

In 2020 Council achieved carbon neutral certification for Council operations, and is now in the process of planning to support the Woollahra community in reducing carbon emissions.

Proposed extension of a loading zone in front of the site at 10-14 Hall Street would have “adverse impacts on the amenity of pedestrians,” said the report by the council’s traffic and services transport manager. In addition, pedestrian safety could be compromised by unloading activities.

To provide feedback on how the Council can further support residents, businesses and schools to reduce their emissions, complete our short survey before June 30: yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/zero.

The council would also miss out on parking income from a metered space which would disappear under the loading zone extension. To compensate for this, the developer would need to pay a one-off fee of $43,000.

Council venues open for bookings

We have a wide range of halls and venues available for hire across the Woollahra municipality, such as Cooper Park wCommunity Hall in Bellevue Hill, that are suitable for recreational and community activities, children's parties and private functions.

Tamarama Surf Club upgrade

Work has commenced on the $4.5 million upgrade of Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club and is expected to take a year to complete.

Council is committed to providing the highest quality care and a happy, safe learning environment through our Woollahra Preschool, which we are proud to report has received a rating of ‘Exceeding the National Quality Standard’ for early education and care services as part of the National Quality Framework Assessment process. Located in Double Bay, the Preschool expanded in October to provide childcare services for an additional 40 children. For further information, visit: woollahra.nsw. gov.au/community/services/childrens_and_ families/woollahra_preschool.

Community consultation on local bus services The NSW Government is consulting the community on proposed changes to bus services in Sydney’s East. Residents can provide feedback to Transport for NSW until June 18 before a Network Plan is finalised in mid-2021.

To have your say, visit: mysydney.nsw.gov.au/ SE_bus_changes

Council opposition to bus cuts

Randwick councillors have added their voices to the clamour of opposition to bus services cuts in the south east (see P16 of this issue ESL).

At the May 25 full meeting of Council, a motion from Labor councillors was passed stating that the bus route cuts were “strongly opposed,” and calling on the state government to listen to community concerns. A separate motion, tabled by Greens councillor Lindsay Shurey, was also passed. It raised the issue of future privatisation of buses. Councillors agreed that concerns about e privatisation should be expressed to the state government. Mayor Danny Said will seek a meeting with Transport Minister Andrew Constance to discuss the cuts and “inconvenience to our residents, especially the elderly and school children.”

Maroubra Junction activation

An underutilised green space in the central median strip of Maroubra Junction, on Anzac Pde between Maroubra Rd and Green St, will soon receive some landscaping improvements, lighting and seating to invigorate the area.

COVID safety plans and conditions are in place for each venue. For a full list of venues and booking information, visit: woollahra.nsw. gov.au/community/spaces_for_hire/venues.

Woollahra Preschool exceeding national standards

RANDWICK

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the clubhouse restoration and upgrade will provide significantly improved amenities to cater to the needs of modern surf lifesaving as well as public education and engagement with the community.

New first aid and incident response facility for Bondi

Emergency responses by Bondi lifeguards will be improved with the construction of a purpose-built first aid and incident management facility. The first aid and incident management facility will be located under the promenade to the north of the lifeguard tower, with construction expected to take six months to complete once planning applications are approved. The tower will also be refurbished as part of a program to boost safety and emergency response. “As as we slowly return to normality, there will again be an increase in visitation to Bondi, and these new facilities will play a key role in how we respond to emergencies.” said Matt du Plessis, Manager of Lifeguard Services.

The upgrade will be implemented thanks to a NSW Government Your High Street grant, which aims to increase the proportion of homes in urban areas within 10 minutes’ walk of quality green, open and public space in urban areas across NSW. “By transforming the area with attractive seating, new landscaping, lights that provide a festive atmosphere and creating the potential to hold market stalls and other activities in the area, we are giving Maroubra Junction the high street it deserves,” stated Randwick Mayor Danny Said.

Pedestrian crossing improvements

Wombats are invading Randwick City – wombat crossings that is. Pedestrian safety will be improved at 29 locations across Randwick City with the construction of new raised crossings known as ‘wombat’ crossings. The projects will be undertaken throughout 2021 and 2022 as part of a $4.37 million grant recently awarded to Council under the Federal Stimulus Road Safety Program School Zones project.

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! One of my top priorities has been campaigning for the protection of our community’s bus services. On May 6, the Minister for Transport revealed plans to remove 25 bus routes from across the Eastern Suburbs. Currently, the following bus routes are being cut: 300, 301, 302, 309X, 310X, 314, 316, 317, 338, 353, 357, 372, 373, 376, 377, 391, 393, 394, 395, 400, 400N, L94, X40, X93, and X99. In addition to these cuts, 23 routes will be modified to force the community to use the Sydney South Eastern Light Rail, increasing the number of modes of transport and extending the journey time. Currently, the following bus routes are planned to be modified: 303, 304, 307, 309, 313, 320, 339, 339X, 343, 347, 355, 362, 370, 373X, 374, 374X, 377X, 392, 397, 399, 418, 420, 420N. Bus services have already been reduced and cut, including the M10, M50, 891, 893, 378 and 361, and these further cuts will be devastating to our community. I am vehemently against the privatisation of our buses, and will oppose any cuts to our bus routes, any reduction in services and the removal of any bus stops. Public buses are part of the fabric of our community. They take us where we need to go, be it to work, to our schools, to the library, to the city, to our hospitals, and to our local businesses. Buses take cars off the road, and ease congestion on our streets, as well as reduce our carbon footprint. The greatest impact we can have on all of these factors, is by having the light rail and our buses working together, not replacing one type of service with another. What you can do to support our campaign to save our buses: • Complete our community petition against these cuts and share it with your friends and family. To access the petition, scan the QR code below. •Complete the Government's community consultation survey ‘Have Your Say On The South East Bus Changes’, and let them know what you think about their shameful bus cuts to our community.
