Friends of the Library kick off new Capital Campaign If you’re wondering why there are so many smiling people in this photo, it’s because the Friends of the East Fishkill Community Library just gave $15,000 to the library at the completion of the leadership phase of the fundraising campaign for its upcoming project, a designated children’s center.

This new area will answer many of our children's needs, putting at one end of the library their books, computers, DVDs and at last, their own place for story time and activities.
... At last, their own place for story time and activities.
This will also benefit our adult patrons, as they will now have a large quiet space where they can do research, use computers, or just read and relax. The exciting interior renovation will include the refurbishment of items nearing the end of their useful life, such as floors, furniture and walls. Everyone from library staff to the kids and their parents can't wait for it all to happen. I am so happy to tell you, it's coming soon! Carol Wall Chair, Friends Capital Campaign
TEEN GEEKS SERVE UP TECH HELP EVERY SATURDAY IN 2014 A Dutchess County grant enables libraries to hire teenagers to work every Saturday to help patrons with technology questions. Last year our Teen Geeks handled questions on setting up email, using iPads, creating Overdrive accounts and downloading books, and they never even broke a sweat. Patrons tell us how much they appreciate the teens’ patience, and that
they bring everyone along at a pace comfortable to them. Our Teen Geeks helped more than 80 people on a trial run last year, so we scheduled them this year, every Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Did you receive help from a Teen Geek? Tell us your story! Email goverman@eflibrary.org, or post on our Facebook page!
Teen Geek Joe Guzmano helps Sue Blodgett set up her iPad. The Dutchess County grant supporting this popular program has been renewed for 2014, with sessions every Saturday, noon to 3 p.m.

ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
MESSAGE FROM LIBRARY LEADERSHIP What makes a library? If your first response is “books” you’re right – but you’re also wrong. A library is smiles and conversations, spirit and life, and sparks of discovery. Yes, it’s a building that houses materials that you can take home, but it’s also a center in which to gather and connect with other people. It’s a server that delivers electronic content onto your computers, e-readers and phones. It’s a playground of the imagination that introduces children to literacy, numeracy and flights of fancy.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
That’s what makes a library today. We are not entirely sure what will make a library tomorrow, but we do know this: As society and culture change, and our needs and values shift, libraries change to meet them. We will always be a part of your life if you invite us!

books to enjoy with no worries about renewals and returns. ●
Every summer we hold Summer Reading Games for kids, teens and adults. The format varies from year to year, but the gist of it is this: read books, get prizes. Last summer, 608 children signed up for the fun.

STEMshop ADDS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS IN K-2 By Cathy Nuding Youth Services Librarian
Each week, kids in grades kindergarten through 2 explore concepts like stability and density, performing blind tastetests, and using measurement tools.
STEM is a nationwide effort to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into all educational areas, for all ages. We’ve always integrated math and science into our programming. In story times, we count, explore themes like weather and seasons, make crafts with lots of shapes and sizes, and sing number-based songs and

CANINE READING BUDDIES ARE BUSY LISTENERS Brendan and Kona are two very busy pups at our libraary. They are therapy dogs trained to help young readers gain confidence and enthusiasm for reading. “He’s never heard a child’s voice he hasn’t loved,” says Brendan’s owner, Chris Ferrero. “He is so excited to come to the library every week to meet his friends!” Brendan is a large black Labrador Retriever who spends fifteen minutes each with four children every Wednesday night during the school year, and Kona is a small
Boston Terrier who curls up on the same Big Blue Sofa with her kids on Tuesdays.
Parents may ask Library staff to help sign up, or go online to the library's events calendar at eastfishkilllibrary.org
Coming in 2014: Our Website will post Brendan and Kona’s Favorite Books!
