studio STUDIO Artists make use of spaces that no one else wants. Rough and ready and ideally cheap, what happens when availability erodes? Where do all the artists go? The site of study is the Boyd Studios in Southbank, a context where residential towers dominate. This project proposes permanent and afforable studios for artists, and aims to explore the social and cultural captial artists can bring to a heartland of multiresidential development, and contribute to its finer grain.

The floor space of the building is roughly split into a 7:2:1 ratio, to accomodate for the different needs of artists. Analysing the rental prices of creative spaces and residential spaces in Melbourne’s artistic areas, the floor space of three 1 bedroom apartments can be turned into a single coworking space and create a profit. The program distribution for the upper levels in the tower accomodate three different audiences. Apartments and work spaces have been arranged to minimise circulation space. Every 3 floors, there is a floor with a balcony, which is accessible by the floor above and below it. Voids in the floor plates create a visual connection between seemingly unrelated programs. Connecting these three floors of through void and balcony create a shared environment, where residents of different occupations can interact. Thus, a the sense of community can be created.

BUBBLE TEA CULTURAL HUB The world’s most well known architect Frank Gehry has recently told the media “98% of everything that is built and designed today is pure shit. There’s no sense of design, no respect for humanity or for anything else.” One of the reasons behind such a comment is the lack of accessible communication of architecture. This project aims to focus on relaying the core ‘bubble tea concept’ of permeating a highrise building through a series of bubble spaces connected by a vertical circulation. With a focus on communication through diagram, the concept has been directly applied to respond to Bubble Tea Culture. PROPOSED CONDITIONS making YAY

rural house The project brief required a small rural house (no more than 70sqm) to be designed considering the notions of program, site and environmental peformance of the building. Additionally, the design must favour the horizontal condition, and be designed for a specific client. This project client was a couple: a female music teacher and her partner who is wheelchair bound and spends much of his time at home meditating. Consequentially, the design focus for this project was to create a generally open and connected series of spaces that allowed for meditation and music practice, but also for the couple to maintain intimacy.

Inner-suburban house Located on a narrow site on Glenferrie Road, Inner-Suburban House is a small multi residential building, with one apartment for the landlord (who is single and lives alone), two apartments for three students each, and two apartments for young families of up to five people each. The Inner-Suburban House also includes a commercial space at ground level. In response to the long and narrow site, the only option to accomodate the volume of residents was to build upwards. The design focus for this project was to allow light to permeate every floor plate and guide circulation.

wearing the city A collaboration between bachelor and masters students at MADA, this project translates notable Melbourne interiors into wearable forms experimenting with materials to work best with the body’s movements. With Melissa Brown (3rd year Fine Arts) and Tess McLaren (3rd year Interior Architecture), we worked on the modernist “gallery to be lived in” Heide II by McGlashan Everist. With a focus on the iconic double height living space, our design drew from the L shaped walls that compose the space. The floating steps made of Mount Gambier Limestone were translated using polystyrene and textured paint to create a light, wearable form. Wearing the Interior City was showcased at MPavillion designed by AL_A

3D PRINT OF GRASSHOPPER INTERVENTION
In this exercise, Villa VPRO by MVRDV was digitally modelled using Rhinoceros, rendered using Vray and post processed in Adobe Photoshop. In the second phase, a parametrically designed intervention was created using grasshopper in Rhinoceros. The undulating wooden structure is an extension of the curved internal floors and car park roof.
