eterborough City Council has welcomed the announcement of funding for two major transport schemes in the city. The Greater Cambridgeshire Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership has secured millions of pounds from the government to invest in various projects in the area. A total of £13.5million has been allocated to the city council to improve Bourges Boulevard and junction 20 of the A47 in Peterborough, over three years from 2015/16. The council will carry out improvements to junction 20 of the A47 to help ease congestion and create better access to Paston.
It will also improve the Bourges Boulevard road corridor between Thorpe Road and Rivergate, improving traffic flow, making the road safer and more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists, and helping to unlock city centre redevelopment sites. Detailed designs are not yet in place, however now the funding has been secured they will be drawn up and the public will be consulted.
The council hopes to start work on both schemes in mid 2015. Poppy’s Tea Room announcement

ith divorce figures on the rise Cb4 Law located in Cambridge have introduced a fixed fee divorce. The fixed fee service has been created specifically for a simple uncontested, divorce with no complicating factors. It consists of an initial 30 minute appointment to find out where you stand at £60 followed by a “fixed fee” divorce - £1010 (£500 plus VAT £100 plus Court fees £410) including all steps such as obtaining Decree Absolute. Ha Ha Su! As the queen of comedy, Su Pollard, returns to our theatres with another outrageous side splitting production from the Ha Ha team, we caught up with the comedian to find out more about Ha Ha Hood and her visit across the region… Tell us about Ha Ha Hood and your character? Ha Ha Hood! and the Prince of Leaves is the latest show from Ben Langley whose shows are so successful because, even though they are parodies, the subjects are still treated with respect. My Maid Marian is really independent, ballsy and brave. She’s very to the point, strong willed and doesn’t mince her words. I far prefer playing a character like that to a poor princess who whimpers and simpers all the time. Who wants to play a part like that? Nightmare! Are you looking forward to working with Cannon & Ball? I love working with Tommy and Bobby. I’d worked with them a couple of times before. I think it’s an 20| eastlife.co.uk

excellent bit of casting because they have a lot of stage experience and will bring a real strength to the show. They’re a great double act! What can the audience expect from the show? There will be lots of surprises but all the old favourites will be there – Robin, The Sheriff of Nottingham, Little John, Friar Tuck and Guy of Gisborne. Also life has changed for Marian following her divorce from Robin. My Maid Marian will be very different from someone like Uma Thurman’s! She’s gutsy. She is currently working as an NHS nurse at the Nottingham Infirmary. She divorced Robin 10 years ago and she’s thought “Get a proper job. I don’t want to be with a bloke who is desperate to go to the forest and live in a tree!”

LIFESTYLE What do you most look forward to when on tour with a new performance? Live theatre gives you the most marvellous feeling in the world - it’s very gratifying. It delivers a buzz I can’t get from working in telly. With TV, you’ve done the performance six months earlier. But on stage, it’s there and then. It’s where you really learn your craft. You can’t top it! What do you love most about performing comedy? The buzz. I love it. The audience are right there with you, and you’re taking them on a journey. You’re doing it for them at that very moment. That’s a special feeling. You give your all every night and get so much back. You can’t beat live theatre. If you hadn’t been actress, what other career path might have you had taken? I knew acting would be my career - I didn’t have to look any further. When I told the school careers officer I wanted to be an actress, she said: “Don’t be ridiculous. Train to be a chef instead.” But I was not cut out for that - I can’t do anything with wooden spoons and saucepans! At least the catering industry was spared my culinary disasters! Various venues within East Anglia feature as part of the nationwide tour, what is your favourite part of the region? I really really like Thetford in Norfolk because we filmed a lot of Hi Di Hi there. David Croft, co-writer of Hi Di Hi had a beautiful farmhouse in Thetford and when he was with us we used to go to quite a lot of summer get togethers and I used to go around the village, which is beautiful.

What other projects are you currently working on? I am still working on my ‘one woman’ show, which I am hoping to take out next spring. I’m also playing the Wicked Queen in Snow White in Sunderland. I absolutely love the script. It’s been honed to within an inch of its life. I get to be really mean towards Snow White and have a rapport with the Prince. When we’re in the dungeon together, I sing, “Don’t You Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me?” Ha Ha Hood! and The Prince of Leaves gallops into action at the Chelmsford Civic with a 5 night run from 19 – 23 August before taking off on a 61 date national tour from 4 September through 17 November. Ha Ha Hood! and The Prince of Leaves will be showing at: High Wycombe Swan, 7 Sept Milton Keynes Theatre, 16 Sept Stevenage Gordon Craig, 22 - 23 Sept Dunstable Grove Theatre, 17 Oct Kings Lynn Corn Exchange, 24 Oct Watford Colosseum, 5 Nov Ipswich Regent Theatre, 11 Nov www.hahahood.com

What do you love to do when in the area? That’s a difficult one because when I am in the area, I am usually working and of course theatre takes up most of the time because of rehearsals, sound checks and performance, and by the time we finish everything is closed but we sometimes manage to find a nice pub that is still open after the performance. We always manage to engage in a nice chat with the locals! Which is your favourite East Anglian city? I love Norwich because they have a rather fabulous M&S store – the best food selection ever! I have two or three friends who live in the city that relocated from London and one of them has a beautiful flat by the river, which is inhabited by loads of white swans. The city is beautifully historical – I remember one of my very first professional engagements was at the Theatre Royal. It was the musical The Desert Song with John Hanson. Which venue in East Anglia do you love to perform at? I really like the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange and I have fond memories of the place because it’s in a beautiful market square.

To the beach & beyond Whether you’re looking for soft sands, traditional seaside activities or somewhere to let the kids run wild, East Anglia has a beach to suit everyone

24| eastlife.co.uk

LIFESTYLE

H

ere in East Anglia, we’re lucky to have some of the UK’s most beautiful coastline right on our doorstep. This summer take the time to explore the wonderful beaches of the region, and we promise you’ll find more than just a stony surf and candyfloss!

The best sandy beaches Holkham Bay, Norfolk The yellow sands here are vast so whether you have children with bucket and spades in tow or enjoy long coastal walks, the beach is ideal for couples, walkers and families alike. Access to the beach is via Lady Anne’s Drive at Holkham village, or along the coast road west of Wells-next-the-Sea. Lady Anne’s Drive is an ideal starting point for many of the superb walks available, and you’ll often find your one mile walk will turn into three as you choose to continue to take in the stunning scenery. For a walk that will take approximately two hours, take the raised walkway down on to the beach and bear to the right. Follow the sands for approximately 2 miles, whereupon you reach the lifeboat station at Wells-next-the-Sea. The view of Wells Harbour and the salt marshes to the right from the sea wall is quite spectacular. Brancaster, Norfolk A popular sandy beach, Brancaster is perfect for picnics and sandcastle building. When the water recedes it leaves shallow lagoons where young children can safely paddle and play. At low tide you can also see the 1940s shipwreck of the SS Vina half submerged in the sand. Brancaster beach is the perfect location for a number of seaside activites, including kayaking, sailing and crabbing. Frinton-on Sea, Essex A quintessentially traditional seaside town, Frintonon-Sea offers a wide stretch of sandy shore backed by a grassy promenade. Retaining much of its Victorian character, you’ll find beach huts lining the shore. The sandy beach is great for families looking for a quieter location, to neighbouring Walton-onthe-Naze, which is home to the country’s second

longest pier and an array of amusements. Ten minutes inland from the Frinton coast you’ll find the beautiful Titchmarsh backwaters, which is home to an abundance of wildlife. The nearby Titchmarsh marina offers al fresco dining opportunities and a sailing school too. Walberswick, Suffolk Walberswick is the best beach in the area for sandcastles, with orange-tinted, fairly coarse sand, backed by lovely dunes. It is the self-appointed capital of crabbing: the World Open Crabbing Championships are held here every August, when the village is packed full of hopefuls bearing crab lines dangling bacon.

The best for relaxation Southwold Denes, Suffolk A short distance from busy Southwold, this rural, blue flag beach is clean, quiet and secluded. To the south is the mouth of the Blyth river, and to the north is historic Southwold itself, which means day-trippers can enjoy the quirky arcades and ice-cream in the morning, before retreating to the dunes here. Sea Palling, Norfolk Sea Palling is a small, quiet family seaside resort on the East Norfolk Coast. This wonderful blue flag sandy beach is deserted for most of the year and is a great place for a walk. A number of reefs have been built as part of the coast defences and it calms the waves making Sea Palling an ideal place to swim or for children to play. Cley, Norfolk Even during the height of the summer Cley Beach is relatively quiet. With its long stretch of stones and shingle, its not the place for buckets and spades, instead you’ll find an area, backed by a marshland that’s rich in birdlife, accessed by a short walk or drive from the village with its distinctive windmill. The perfect location if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

LIFESTYLE Kids can take to the inflatable slides, bouncy castles and trampolines, whilst for adults there’s a casino, a theatre and nightclubs. There are several restaurants and cafes along the seafront, or simply walk along the promenade with fish and chips in hand. Felixstowe, Suffolk Brassy and fun, Felixstowe has the charm of a wellheeled seaside resort and a lively atmosphere. The town’s four-mile sand and shingle beach is dotted with beach huts. The choice of food ranges from up market bistros to seafront fish and chips, and there’s an array of bars and clubs along the front. The many amusements and children’s activities along the seafront include indoor and outdoor adventure golf, miniature train rides and a boating lake, slot machines and indoor amusements. Aldeburgh, Suffolk One of Suffolk’s most picturesque seaside towns, Aldeburgh is a charming mix of grand pastel-coloured seafront houses and tar-black fishermen’s huts where the daily catch is still brought ashore. Aldeburgh is also renowned for its fish and chips, so queue early if you want to sample an open feast, sitting on the seawall. You’ll also find fresh fish cooked to perfection in the town’s many hotels and restaurants. Day trippers should visit the historic timber framed Moot Hall – home to Aldeburgh Museum – the lifeboat station, and Maggi Hambling’s Scallop sculpture on the beach. Wells-next-the Sea, Norfolk A fun, bucket-and-spade beach, a mile from the lively town, the beach is characterised by its collection of brightly coloured beach-huts, backed by pinewoods. It is a popular point of the Norfolk coast for fishing and you’ll find many day charter trips available. Bring the whole family aboard and spend the day at sea fishing for Bass, Tope and Cod or Mackerel.

The best for activities Southwold Beach, Suffolk Southwold beach with its iconic (and new launched) pier has been attracting the bucket and spade brigade for generations. A mix of sand and shingle, it’s backed by wooden chalets and a promenade. Offering everything great about a traditional British seaside resort, you’ll find a vibrant pier, amusements, putting greens and boating ponds. Great Yarmouth & Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk Lively and entertaining, these two resorts merge into one fun-filled beachside bonanza. In summer the sandy beaches attract visitors in the thousands, and a huge range of activities await those who’ve had enough sunbathing.

Cromer, Norfolk A sandcastle builders delight, cosy Cromer is all a beach resort should be. Colourful cliff gardens overlook the stretches of sandy coast, where wide-open beaches are perfect for a game of cricket or Frisbee. The rows of seafront B&B buildings date back to the 1800s, reflecting Cromer’s history as a popular Victorian seaside resort. Famed for its Cromer Crab, you’ll find plenty of delicious seafood restaurants as well as the popular Cromer & Lobster Festival which takes place each summer. Fishing for crabs on the line is a popular holiday pastime in Cromer, and one the kids will simply love.

I

f you love seafood summer is the perfect opportunity to tuck in. It’s a time where some of the region’s favourite fish are in season and a glass of crisp white wine can be enjoyed in the sun with a mouth-watering fishy lunch. Along the coastline and surprisingly inland, there are plenty of seafood restaurants that are ideal for a quick bite or indulgent meal. If you’re looking to impress someone special, Smiths in Ongar, Essex is certainly worth a visit. With a reputation that has been building for more than 50 years, the fine dining restaurant is renowned throughout Essex for its quality seafood. Dishes aren’t cheap but if you’re lucky you might spot one of its regular celebrity visitors that include the likes of Rod Stewart and David Beckham! Food with a view If you are in the mood for seafood chances are you’ll head straight to the coast. From top to bottom East Anglia’s coastline is home to some of the country’s most delicious and freshly caught seafood. You’ll find fine-dining restaurants serving beautifully presented dishes, cafes on the seafront with an impressive menu and plenty of fish and crab sheds where you can enjoy your yummy seafood snack right on the beach. Offering food with a view is The Rocket House Cafe located on Cromer’s beach. Open during the day visitors can enjoy lunch specials featuring Cromer’s famous crab and lobster. Norfolk coast, Cookies Crab Shop has been selling quality seafood for over three generations. One little ray of sunshine and the place is heaving. Cookies is much more than a shellfish shop, it also offers salads and sandwiches (which can be pre-ordered) and seafood platters for two people or more. Seafood can be enjoyed in the garden overlooking the saltmarshes where guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine, or can be taken away. Whatever you choose, just be sure to call in advance and reserve lobster and crab orders, as on busy days they will sell out. On sunny days in Essex, The Company Shed on Mersea Island is a popular haunt for locals and tourists. Serving delicious shellfish, with oysters as its specialty, its clear to see why this rustic establishment receives great reviews. Don’t expect a silver service though; this eatery is all about the quality of the food. Diners are encouraged to bring their own wine and bread to enjoy with their meal.

in season. This time of year is fantastic for Mackerel, Dover Sole, Cod and Wild Bass, but if you are unsure what to choose, ask your local fishmonger what’s in season and what they would recommend. “When buying fish, buy a whole fish and ask the fishmonger to fillet it on the spot. To check for freshness, go for a fish with shiny eyes that stick out, a slimy skin and, above all, the fish stall or shop should smell of the sea and not old fish.” Many people can find that cooking fish can be somewhat of challenge, Mark added his top tips for home cooking: “When cooking a fish it is easy to overcook so try to err on the side of undercooking and check whether it is cooked by parting the centre of the fillet. If it easily comes away from the skin then it’s ready. I would recommend grilling rather than baking or frying as the fish stays moister, and don’t mask the fish with strong flavours, especially if the fish is mild in flavour.” Whether you choose to eat out or stay at home, fish is a dish that can be enjoyed anywhere you choose!

If you would prefer a calmer pace and service in a restaurant then head along the coastline to the West Mersea Oyster Bar, where you’ll find scrumptious seafood, oysters that are among the best in the world and great service. Homemade Of course, summertime is also a great time to enjoy al fresco dining in the comfort of your own home. What better way to impress friends and family at a BBQ or dinner party than by serving a tasty fish dish. But what should you be asking for when you take a trip to your local fishmonger? Mark David, chef at The Little Fish Shop in Kelvedon, Essex which runs a Cookery School at Braxted Park between Colchester and Chelmsford gave his advice: “Fish, like all fresh produce, is best when eaten eastlife.co.uk | 31

Take a trip on the wild side School’s out! Make the most of the summer holidays with our top picks for animal friendly fun

I

f the phrase “I’m bored” sounds all too familiar, here are some ideas to improve your chances for a stress free six weeks. East Anglia is home to some of the best adventure parks, zoos and farms around, come rain or shine it’s a guaranteed great family day out. Amazona Zoo id you know Cromer was home to a host of exotic animals including pumas, jaguars, flamingos, tapirs, iguanas, toucans, monkeys and a giant anaconda?! They can all be seen at Amazona Zoo situated on the outskirts of the town. It’s rapidly becoming a must-see attraction for locally-based families and for the many visitors that come from beyond Norfolk.

D

On arrival you’re instantly transported into a tropical setting as towering, lush vegetation surrounds you and you hear the monkeys and birds calling in the distance. The zoo is owned by Benjie and Dido Cabbell-Manners who bought the zoo in December 2013 and they have wasted little time in fulfilling their plans to invest in more facilities. The zoo now has an indoor soft play area – Jungle Tumbles, which is proving popular, a refurbished lake-side cafe serving delicious food and snacks and a large Yurt for indoor picnics and educational tours. Benjie and Dido recently visited South America to explore opportunities to expand the number of animal species at the zoo, to get more involved in conservation projects and to get inspiration for the continued evolution of the zoo. They said: “We hope that our substantial investment plus our ambitions to integrate the zoo further into community life will make Amazona an unmissable attraction for visitors as well as residents of Cromer.” Watch this space! Happy Camping You’ve pitched the tent in the garden, now its time to embrace the great outdoors

I

t’s not just festivalgoers that are jumping on the camping band-wagon, families are also getting back to nature with many opting for a weekend getaway al fresco style. A great way to spend quality time with the family this summer, camping can be a fun and rewarding experience – and it would appear Suffolk is a great place to start… For a truly peaceful and relaxing break Newbourne Woodland Campsite on the edge of the Suffolk village of Woodbridge is an adult-only site with just 20 tent pitches in a small wood. Ideal for outdoorsy couples, you’ll wake up to birdsong before spending the day walking the paths and hedgerows of the beautiful countryside or take a trip to Newbourne Springs nature reserve before returning to an evening under the stars. The beach at Felixstowe is just a short drive away where you can buy some freshly caught fish to grill on the barbecue round your campfire in the evening. The local village pub, which does good food, is a short stroll away, as is the farm shop where you can buy everything you need. It’s back to basics with no electric hook-ups, just a torch and campfire, however there are new comfortable equipped his and hers washrooms, with hot, free showers, so you can go back to nature with mod cons! Tent pitches are £20 per night. Family fun If the thought of going all Bear Grylls with the family is a little too terrifying to comprehend, Stansfield Hall Lake and Woodlands in Sudbury, Suffolk, set on a working farm, offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and camping facilities but in slightly more dignified accommodation with its log pods or huts.

42| eastlife.co.uk

The accommodation is simply furnished with a gas shower, which you just hook up to a tree branch so you still get a real sense of camping. Pods can sleep up to four guests in each with prices from £50 per night. The site is ideal if you’re looking to tear the family away from the TV, iPads and video games, as you’ll find plenty to see and do. On site you’ll find lots of animals ranging from wild birds, badgers, deer, toads, frogs, newts, voles and dragonflies to the farm’s very own smallholiding collection. Amongst the animals on the farm are Shetland ponies, geese, lambs, hens, kuny kuny pigs, miniature goats and ducks. The farm is also home to a small brewery. By night take a trip to the pub located next to the farm or enjoy a singsong around the campfire. Glamping in Norfolk Since the rise of the festival, glamping has been sweeping the nation. The concept offers those who prefer home comforts to camp in style. For a glamping experience on the North Norfolk coast head to Deepdale Backpackers, which offers stylish accommodation including Tipi’s, Yurts and Shepherds Huts. Yurts are located at the Woodview area of the site and are great for a romantic getaway or family adventure. Yurts include a woodburner which mean you can visit during summer or winter as well as lovely views and your own private garden. You’ll find no cold outdoor showers here, the modern shower block complete with under floor heating, is perfect for those who would like to remain glamorous throughout their stay. There are also laundry facilities and a clothes shop on site – who said camping had to be dirty, eh?

LIFESTYLE

For something a little different, Tithe Barn is a rural location in Sisland, located near the city of Norwich and famous Norfolk Broads. The site’s Showman Wagon, affectionately known as Elle-de-Vardo, is an alternative choice of accommodation. Inspired by an original design and traditionally handbuilt by craftsmen in Norfolk, the wagon is offered on a self-catering basis and features a double bed, ingenious pull-out dining table and storage. Cooking facilities including a BBQ are located adjacent to the wagon. Be prepared With the festival season in full swing, the high street and online retailers are certainly not short of a camping gadget or two! You’ll find a host of fancy items to help your survive your weekend in the wilderness. Just because you’re camping it shouldn’t mean the experience needs to be uncomfortable. Stop your back ache with Roll up Bedding from boutiquecamping.com. These squishy sleeping mats are multi-functional, super comfortable and easy to carry strapped to your rucksack. All bedding is waterproof and UV-resistant to last in harsh camping environments and will ensure you get enough beauty sleep to enjoy your day. Double priced £95, single £115. If you can’t bear to live without your smartphone or perhaps you want to enjoy Eastlife Magazine on the go with our brand new app, Olixar enCharge Portable Charger is a compact device, small and light enough to fit in a rucksack or handbag. It’s ultra powerful so gives you the freedom to charge your devices such as iPhones, iPods, Android and Windows smartphones, tablets and iPads anywhere,

perfect if you’re on the move or don’t have access to a mains power source. An abundance of charging power means that no matter what needs power, you’ll have it up and running again in next to no time. In fact, it has enough stored power to fully charge an iPhone 5S six times over! Dual USB outputs mean you can charge a smartphone at the same time as a tablet, so you can continue calling friends and taking photos plus sharing them. The additional feature of built-in LED lights means you can see what you’re doing even in a dark tent. Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of camping is having to deal with mozzies and pesty little insects that bite. If you’re exploring the great outdoors with the family its inevitable at one point someone is going to encounter a bite or sting of some sort. To ensure your trip is not ruined, Zap-it is a great little device for soothing the itch. A small but effective device that generates a harmless and mild (no stronger than a gentle pinch) low electrical impulse created by crystals to deliver harmless little ‘zaps’ which take the itch and scratch out of mozzie bites. The device can be used on children from age of two up, won’t take up any room in your luggage and is reasonably priced at £5.95. Zap-it is available from Superdrug, selected pharmacies and Asda nationwide. When it comes to camping, it really is the small things that can make all the difference. With a huge choice of basic and luxurious accommodation available across the region and plenty of little accessories to make sure your trip goes without a hitch, a camping holiday is guaranteed to create lasting memories!

Our personal favourite is the delicious beef pie – a British classic. Made with a British blade of beef and Silver Bay Point red wine, served with buttery mash and veg, the mouth-watering dish priced at £13.50 is certainly worth a try.

BEST FOR...GREAT FOOD AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE

Alimentum

I

t’s not often you can use the word Michelin star and affordable in the same sentence. In a city where restaurants can get away with serving average food at a higher price due to its visiting tourists and wealthier students, it’s rare to find a restaurant that serves quality dishes at a reasonable price, which is why Alimentum is a treasure of a find. Perhaps not in a location you would expect, the restaurant’s menu is best described as modern European. A fixed price menu is available starting at £18.50 for two courses, while the a la carte menu offers a delightful mix of vibrant, flavoursome and beautifully presented dishes with a choice of beef, lamb, duck, sea bass and halibut.

BEST FOR...A QUICK (but delicious) BITE

The Smokeworks

2 Free School Lane, Cambridge, CB2 3QA

S

mokeworks is the latest restaurant from the Cambs Cuisine stable. Quality of the food is at the heart of the Smokeworks concept. The majority of the food is slow cooked and slow smoked, but despite the cooking of its food, the restaurant has a fast paced environment. It’s even in its slogan. “Slow Cooked. Fast.”

The chef’s tasting menu features 10 courses cooked using seasonal ingredients plus a few new and exciting dishes, priced £85 per person. The head chef’s passion for food is obvious in every dish. The use of slow cooking techniques to accentuate flavour and texture often involving sub prime cuts, add to every mouth-watering bite. Alimentum is ideal for couples and groups who have grown tired of the same restaurants and menus and are looking to indulge in quality food.

Rubbed beef and pork ribs, slow cooked pulled pork and brisket, chicken, all BBQ styled, are part of a menu of just 12 dishes. The beef dripping mash is incredible. Delivery to the table, in contrast to the cooking procedure, is fast with 95 per cent of the menu available for takeaway. There are no courses; all of the food comes at once and without fuss. The drinks menu concentrates on bottle beers and bourbons. Milkshakes are for after the feed. There’s no time for coffee, Smokeworks simply doesn’t serve it. The concept is about speed of service and is high on energy. The team reflects this and embraces the latest technology to ensure food and drink is at the table asap with a switch to call for service on each table. eastlife.co.uk | 47

WEDDINGS

I do with sea views Yes, a beach wedding in the UK is possible

B

each weddings offer a sensible yet elegant solution to the expense and headache normally associated with a traditional wedding. Typically, a beach wedding is easier to plan, cheaper to pay for and a whole lot more fun - for everyone - including the guests! As one of the driest places in the UK, East Anglia is the perfect location for a beach wedding. If you dream of a barefoot ceremony and the sound of the sea as a background to your vows, you’ll find plenty of traditional coastal towns like Lowestoft in Suffolk and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk that offer a charming seaside setting for your big day. It’s important to choose your location wisely. Beaches are often breezy, especially in the UK – it can often be a sunny day yet head to the beach and you’ll find weather conditions that resemble that of the 1987 hurricane. To ensure you’re not a fly away bride, try to pick a cove or area that is protected from direct winds for your ceremony. The tides are also something to consider, you don’t want your guests to end up with soggy feet! Most coastal venues will be able to assist with the planning of your beachside ceremony but it’s

56| eastlife.co.uk

worth checking with local authorities first to ensure a beach wedding will be possible. If not, there are plenty of venues that offering stunning sea views and can be just as wonderful. To help you decide we’ve selected our favourite beach side wedding venues in East Anglia: East Mersea Hall, Essex If you’re looking for an exclusive island wedding, look no further than East Mersea Hall. Located on the beautiful Mersea Island, Essex, the venue is set within stunning grounds home to a medieval church and surrounded by a thousand year old moat and ancient marshes full of history and romance, with oyster beds running to the shore where colonies of seals can often be seen. The venue offers church ceremonies within the grounds and civil ceremonies within the dining room or terrace room. The Pavilion lends itself perfectly as an ideal location for the wedding breakfast seating up to 120 guests and overlooking the lake. The Pavilion is available from the 15th April through to the 15th October.

The Cliff Hotel, Norfolk With sunset views and photograph opportunities on the sands of Gorleston’s award-winning beach, The Cliff Hotel is a fabulous and elegant setting for your beach wedding.

White Lion Hotel, Suffolk Set opposite the wide shingle beach and fishermen’s huts on Suffolk’s Heritage Coast at Aldeburgh, the White Lion Hotel is a magical venue for weddings by the sea.

The hotel boasts impressive sea views all across the hotel and has a new sun terrace, which is perfect for post ceremony drinks. With a retractable roof and patio heaters it makes for perfect use all year round and in all types of weather.

The hotel’s professional team will listen to your specific requirements and ensure the big day runs to plan allowing you and your guests to relax and enjoy every minute of this special occasion. Choose from a variety of all-inclusive packages, which can also be adapted to suit your own ideas.

The hotel offers a number of packages with an events manager to ensure your day runs smoothly. Packages can also be tailormade to suit your requirements. The function room can accommodate up to 160 guests for the wedding breakfast, while the bar area leads to the terrace overlooking the beach. The Boatyard, Essex If you’re looking for a modern venue yet want the classic surroundings of a fishing village, The Boatyard in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, offers the best of both worlds. The venue certainly has the wow factor with a striking open plan design, mezzanine floor and decked terrace overlooking the Thames Estuary – great for drinks with guests and photographs on sunny days. There is a nautical theme throughout, great seafood and a la carte menu and the venue can hold up to 200 guests with plenty of room to dance.

The White Lion specialise in catering for smaller receptions and wedding breakfasts for eight to ninety guests. However, if you are planning evening entertainment, the James Cable Room can accommodate up to 120. The hotel is also licensed to hold civil ceremonies for 90 guests; the local registrar is based at Deben Registry Office in Woodbridge. Privately owned, the White Lion has 38 bedrooms with stylish contemporary decor; many have panoramic views out to sea. Facing east they are also a great vantage point to watch the sun rise over the glistening sea in the morning.

The Boatyard is available for wedding receptions only so ceremonies will need to be held elsewhere. eastlife.co.uk | 57

HOME & GARDEN

Night Light Designing a dream scheme for your garden

I

t won’t be long before the nights begin to draw in, but that doesn’t mean you have to retire inside; garden lighting is a simple and effective method for creating the perfect ambience in your garden. Sylvia Newman, a Cambridge based garden designer with over 15 years of experience working on all types of projects from Presidential Palaces to compact courtyard gardens, gave her expert advice for bringing a ray of light to your garden… “A good garden is designed for all seasons, all weather and all hours of the day. Many people enjoy their gardens by day but might underestimate, if not completely neglect, the possibilities of enjoying it by night. Garden lighting is the single most effective way to transform an outdoor space from a vast expanse of darkness to an elegant and functional space from day to night. While professional lighting schemes can cost thousands, there are plenty of quick and easy DIY lighting solutions that can yield similar effects for significantly lower costs. Before setting out and purchasing fixtures, it’s important to consider the desired effect and function of your scheme. Here are a few important things to ponder before proceeding: Safety Floodlights with motion sensors are an effective way to feel secure in the garden and provide ease of

access throughout the year. Floodlight fixtures come in all ranges of styles and prices so even the most frugal DIY enthusiast can source an effective and efficient solution to highlight garden boundaries and access points which provides a sense of security and peace of mind.

HOME & GARDEN

Access Lighting garden steps, level changes and access points from the house are all great ways to promote movement through the garden even if it’s pitch black outdoors. Highlighting access points or points of transition with in-ground recessed lights or similar fixtures encourage feelings of safety while also being quite stylish. Activity The features of a garden will always vary, but it’s important to consider which elements or areas see the most activity. Use a lighting scheme to enhance entertainment areas like outdoor dining spaces, hot tubs or other seating areas where people gather. Installing down-lights in garden structures like arbours are a great way to highlight social spaces and create interesting and functional focal points. An Architectural Scene Recent architectural trends prominently feature glass which can be great for opening views from the house during the day, but without outdoor lighting, they can also fall a bit flat at night. Consider focusing a lighting scheme on certain architectural elements in the garden to create a beautiful atmospheric space that provides strong visual links between indoors and out. Up-lighting trees, accent walls, outdoor sculptures and water features can create beautiful and stimulating scenes that provide added dimension and depth to the design of both home and garden. Implementation Installing a lighting scheme is best left to professionals, but for the brave DIY-ers out there who aren’t afraid of a few sparks, it is possible to both design and install a scheme independently. When sourcing fixtures, consider LED lamps as they are inexpensive to run and last far longer than their halogen counterparts. Solar lamps are also a good option and of course candles and outdoor lanterns are always cheap and cheerful ways to enhance an electrical scheme and minimise added energy costs. Undertaking a lighting design may seem daunting, but with a bit of thought and some imagination, it’s easy to create a beautiful (and functional) scheme that works for both you and your garden.

hoosing a care home can be a daunting task but throughout East Anglia you’ll find many welcoming and friendly care homes where you or your loved ones can receive the level of care needed in a safe and secure environment.

dents can get natural light, fresh air and do regular exercises. The building should be clean and well maintained.

Today care homes are beautifully furnished, host a number of activities during the day and are a very sociable place to be. Homes are well kept and usually offer lovely garden areas where residents can relax.

The facilities and accessibility are as important as the look and feel of a home. You need to know that your loved one will be safe and able to enjoy a happy life. The nursing home that you will choose should have all the facilities needed for the elderly. Wheelchairs and other equipment should be in clean working order. There should be handrails along the walls and safety systems should be installed on the stairs. The facilities available should always meet the needs of the residents.

Whether you are looking for respite care, temporary care or permanent placements of the elderly, it’s important to find a home that is right for you and your family. The atmosphere Foremost, the environment should be welcoming and comfortable for the residents. It should be designed as homely as possible so that staying there is like living in your own house. Furthermore, there should be a garden or an outdoor area where resi-

The NHS advises, “A care home which is registered to provide personal care will offer support, ensuring that basic personal needs, such as meals, bathing, going to the toilet and medication, are taken care of. If extra medical care is needed, registered care homes are able to provide this. These are often referred to as nursing homes and can help specialise in certain type of disabilities such as dementia. Staff When viewing a care home it’s important to ask your guide or the manager as many questions as possible. They will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Angie Silva, manager at Highfield Private Care Home, Saffron Walden said: “An established care home led by a spirited manager together with an experienced team of highly motivated and trained nurses and carers should understand every individual’s needs.

costs and finances; an important factor for many. Angie gave her advice for choosing a home: “When choosing a care home I would recommend visiting as many as you can before making your choice. Ask questions and seek assurances that any special requirements you may have can be delivered by your choice of care home.” Whether you’re looking for a respite where you can enjoy care in a safe and friendly environment or whether you need medical assistance, there are a number of outstanding care homes throughout the region that are able to offer expert and affectionate care. *www.nhs.uk/CarersDirect/guide www.ageuk.org.uk/home-and-care

Care homes that have staff with many years service provide residents with familiar faces that are part of an extended family and community.” Making the right choice Research is key when choosing a care home. If you’re finding the decision overwhelming there are a number of charitable organisations that offer advice and tips for making the right choice. Sun safety

I

t’s that time of year where many Britons excitedly pack their bags and head for sunnier shores. To ensure the holiday you’ve worked so hard for doesn’t end up a disaster it’s important to understand how to protect yourself from the sun rays we all love so much. Nothing can completely undo sun damage, although the skin can sometimes repair itself. So, it’s never too late to begin protecting yourself from the sun. Follow these tips to help prevent sun-related skin problems: Give your body a subtle, natural tan with Lavera’s 100% plant-based nourishing formula that is suitable for even the most sensitive skin. The tanning ingredients, which are derived from sugar and rapeseed oil, combined with nourishing organic sunflower oil, aloe vera and macadamia nut oil, will leave your complexion looking tanned, radiant and ready for summer! Lavera Self Tanning Body Lotion is priced £13.50 / 150ml.

1. Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then at least every 2 hours thereafter, more if you are sweating or swimming.

After a day in the sun lips can generally become dry and cracked. Keep your smile looking smooth all summer with Lavera Sun Sensitive Lip Balm price £5.95. The product is 100 per cent mineral and offers water resistant lip protection with active organic ingredients including shea butter, sweet almond oil, sea buckthorn oil and jojoba oil, which protects and intensively cares for the lips on a sunny day.

4. Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

2. Wear sunglasses with total UV protection 3. Wear wide-brimmed hats, long sleeved shirts and trousers

5. Perform skin self-exams regularly to become familiar with existing growths and to notice any changes or new growths 6. Eighty percent of a person’s lifetime sun exposure is acquired before age 18. As a parent, be a good role model and foster skin cancer prevention habits in your child 7. Avoid the urge to top up your tan before your holiday by the use of sunbeds. eastlife.co.uk | 73

A

t last the summer is truly upon us. With the promise of a heat wave ahead, what a great time to visit some of the wonderful outdoors exhibitions on show this month. My must see choice has to be “People and Pots” at The Sculpt Gallery, Tiptree, Essex. This beautiful gallery always seems to get it just right. Its rich and constant combination of media and subject matter never ceases to capture my attention and lure me to the east. One of the very few galleries in the United Kingdom, which specializes exclusively in threedimensional art, it is open to the public between 11.00am and 4.30pm on Saturdays, throughout the year. Owner Debra Blik, recommends that you call beforehand, to confirm your visit. Their latest exhibition brings together the work of figurative sculptor John Brown and wood-firing ceramicist Chris Lewis. Both artists work within a broad range of scale, so the gallery’s garden makes it the perfect setting, in which to view many of their larger pieces. Wonderful life-size figures and sturdy, yet intricate, seats and vessels, emerge from the plants, pebbles and pathways, of this beautifully structured oasis. Smaller works can be found in the gallery’s airy and cleverly lit interior space. John Brown is best known for his contemporary abstract figurative sculpture, expressing emotions and relationships. His large bronze resins and stone carvings are suitable to be enjoyed in the garden,

all year round. Based and renowned in London, private collectors of his work include Sir Elton John, Simon Cowell, Andrew Castle, and Lesley Ash. Ceramist Chris Lewis, works from his pottery in East Sussex where he has been creating wood-fired pots and sculptural pieces for the garden, since 1976. Immersing his works in ash and embers, during the course of their three or four day firings, is a method that results in beautifully organic surface colours and textures. This element of managed chance and surprise gives each piece an almost archaeological character. In addition, inside the gallery, you can also find sculptural pots from, Stephanie Wright and AnneMarie Jacobs. Of particular interest to budding sculptors will be the new limited edition Marquette, from East Anglian sculptor Neal French FRBS. This working Marquette, for his most current commission “Fruit Picker”, is displayed with some of his concept clay sketches. The combination provides the viewer with a rare insight into some of the stages required to produce a final piece. Great ball of fire raises £3,500 for Chelsea

A

rural farmer who launched a new business after discovering a hidden artistic flair has raised £3,500 for charity with the help of his great balls of fire. Suffolk family man Andy Gage started The Firepit Company after deciding to have a go at making a firepit for his garden. The resulting Fireball – part patio heater, part work of art - took this year’s Chelsea Flower Show by storm, with Andy raking in £50,000 of orders while his new invention became a finalist for the Chelsea Garden Product of the Year. A special World War I inspired bowl, another of Andy’s creations, also attracted attention at the show and was auctioned off in aid of veteran soldiers The Chelsea Pensioners. The winning bid for the ‘In Flanders Field’ firebowl, named after the poem by Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, was £3,500, and was made by Susan Taylor, from Wiltshire. Mrs Taylor said she had never seen anything like the stunning firebowl before and that it fit in perfectly with her lifestyle and family connections Andy said he enjoyed being able to personally deliver the firebowl and to see it in situ in Mrs Taylor’s well tended gardens. “I am so chuffed that something I have created can at the same time have its own meaning for someone else,” he said.

This August kicks off with Suffolk Young People’s Theatre, who will be jumpin’ and jivin’ with a radioactive rock ‘n’ roll musical! They say ‘tis better to have loved and lost, than to have loved, lost… and witnessed your true love return as a zombie! On a somewhat different theme, the Theatre Royal’s Community Company will once again be serving up the historical treat that is Backstage Past: Live Encounters! With a complete re-write this year, following fascinating new research discoveries, expect some exciting new stories to be brought to life in this thrilling promenade performance! It’s safe to say that things will be rather different this year, with new characters, stories, and ways that those historical characters will make sure to involve you in their story! T

he de Havilland Aircraft Museum at Salisbury Hall, London Colney, has officially launched a £1million appeal to raise funds to build a big new hangar to protect more of the collection of aircraft. It follows the granting of planning permission earlier this year by Hertsmere Council and is the next stage of the museum’s strategy to preserve, restore and display examples of the civil and military types designed by de Havilland at Hatfield Announcing the appeal, the chairman of the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Trust, Alan Brackley said: “It is so very important that we get them all under cover because some have wood and fabric in their construction so being exposed to the weather is not good for them. That is why our appeal is so very important in helping us preserve the de Havilland heritage.” The hangar will nearly treble the amount of covered space at the museum. It will replace the museum’s original small corrugated iron Robin hangar which is some 80 years old, and abut the larger Walter Goldsmith hangar built some 30 years ago. It will have a mezzanine floor, enhanced de Havilland information and educational area, workshops for restoration work, and a refreshment area. With a comfortable environment it will ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and comfortable experience. The hangar is the second stage of the museum’s development plan. Early last year a new Reception Foyer and Aeroshop were created. The new facilities will mean they will be looking to attract more volunteers to help run the museum as well as maintain and restore its aircraft. Details can be found at www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk

ARTS Loving the 70s Exhibition

London by Edward Bawden

L

P

upils at schools in West Suffolk are being encouraged to take part in a ‘design a poster’ competition for the forthcoming 1970s exhibition at Moyse’s Hall Museum, Bury St Edmunds. The exhibition, called ‘Loving the 70s’, will run from July 5 to November 2 and detail the influential decade through a collection of local 70s memorabilia, oral histories, photographs, documents, films and recordings. Youngsters in West Suffolk are being given the chance to design the poster for the event, which could also earn them an annual Family Heritage Ticket, worth £30. Moyse’s Hall is one of 11 museums across Suffolk and Hertfordshire to join forces for the two-year ‘Saving the 70s’ project, led by the Association of Suffolk Museums. The project has been awarded a £247,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund with the overall aim to build up a picture of the 1970s across the two counties to assess how it has impacted the life we know today. Moyse’s ‘Loving the 70s’ exhibition will focus on leisure and entertainment and cover everything from fashion to music, technology, sport, film and TV. There will also be special craft workshops running during the exhibition for youngsters, including making Sherbet Flying Saucers, Mood Jewellery, Muppet Making and Tie Dye classes.

ondon by Edward Bawden, an exhibition at The Higgins Bedford, showcases the artist and designer’s iconic vision of the city. Having opened in May the exhibition continues to be a great success. The exhibition includes examples of Bawden’s work for London Underground, his large, structural linocuts of London monuments and London markets, and images of the Horse Guards and Kew Gardens. These remarkable images offer insight into how Bawden’s relationship with the city developed throughout his long career. Bawden’s work returned time and again to certain parts of the city. Liverpool Street Station was the subject of work both from the 1920s and the 1960s but it was Kew Gardens that was to have the most lasting appeal. Bawden’s earliest work depicting Kew is a manuscript, acquired by The Higgins Bedford with assistance from The Art Fund in 2010, entitled A General Guide to the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Spring & Easter 1923. The unpublished manuscript is a mock-up guide book for Kew Gardens dedicated on the first page to his friend, the artist, Eric Ravilious. The book features many humorous characters enjoying the gardens, and an early example of Bawden’s characteristic illustrated maps. The Higgins Bedford, Castle Lane,

Stunning Saffron Walden Beauty and history at every turn

E

arlier this year Saffron Walden set the standard high for rural living as it was named the top place to live by the 2014 Halifax Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey. A mid-sized market town, in the Uttlesford district of Essex, Saffron Walden beautifully combines its historic appearance with a modern day town. Every Tuesday and Saturday the Market Square comes alive and plays host to a bustling market selling local produce, clothing, flowers and more. The Market Square is the central point of the town with many amenities, stores and restaurants directly on the Square or in the surrounding roads. It is also home to the busy Tourist Information Centre, which offers visitors the opportunity to find out more about the area, attractions and local events. The town has a friendly and strong sense of community spirit, which helps retain the town’s

charm and appeal. A short distance from the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk borders Saffron Walden is surrounded by picturesque countryside, which is home to a number of traditional villages such as Wimbish, Thaxted and Newport. It is easily accessible by the M11 and A14.

Attractions

One of the country’s grandest stately homes, Audley End House is set in tranquil Essex with beautiful views of the rolling countryside. Widely known for its restored parterre and walled Organic Kitchen Garden, the estate is a must for families every season. Children can enjoy the estate themed play area next to the Cart Yard Café, a place for parents to relax. There’s plenty for the adults to enjoy too! This August Audley End’s famous concerts return. Pack your picnic and gazebo (and maybe a rain mac too), and get ready to dance the night

away. On Saturday 2 August Audley End will host ‘The Greatest 80s Party Ever’ where you can sing and dance to 80s classics. On Sunday 3 August the summer season will come to a close with the traditional ‘Last Night of the Audley End Proms’. Laura Wright, Camilla Kerslake, Gardar Thor Cortes, and Amy Dickson will lead the festivities. The evening will start with a stunning performance by The Grace Spitfire and close with a fantastic firework display. Saffron Walden is home to two fascinating mazes, the ancient turf maze on the Common and the restored Victorian yew hedge maze at Bridge End Garden. Bridge End Garden is a series of seven interlinked gardens laid out by the Gibson family in the nineteenth century. These Grade II listed gardens are open to the public each day free of charge.

Out & about in Stevenage A town with plenty to see and do

A

visit to Stevenage and its surrounding villages offers variety in every sense of the word. You can shop in major High Street chains or individual shops, see inns that Dick Turpin knew, look at modern architecture or admire ancient churches and Tudor cottages. Walk down the Avenue that writer Forster described in Howards End or watch the latest films at a 16-screen Cineworld in the Leisure Park. You might just bump into local hero Lewis Hamilton, paying a visit to his childhood home.

Attractions

Stevenage, the first of the country’s post-war new towns, has a wide range of facilities including the Gordon Craig Theatre, a swimming pool, indoor market and a thriving museum underneath the modern church of St

George and St Andrew. The nearby Roaring Meg retail park caters for out-of-town shoppers while Stevenage Old Town, founded on the route of the ancient Great North Road, retains the character of an original Medieval settlement. At the Walkern Gallery you can see the work of Stephen Lowe along with other local and professional artists. Knebworth House, close to Stevenage, is well worth a visit, not only a fabulous stately home, you can spend the whole day there, visiting the Dinosaur Trail and the children’s adventure playground. Described as the green jewel in Stevenage’s crown, Fairlands Valley Parks is 120 acres of parkland in the heart of the town, which offers activities for youngsters and water sports on the lake.

Places to eat & stay

The town has a restaurant catering for every cuisine from Italian to Greek and Indian to Mediterranean. Try Loch Fyne on Fore Street for seafood or head to one of the many pubs such as The Chequers Inn at Bragbury End for a drink and traditional Sunday lunch. In the town centre you’ll find many budget hotels such as the Holiday Inn, Premier Inn, Novotel and Ibis. There’s also a number of affordable B&Bs for those looking for a homely stay.

What’s on?

Knebworth House has a great line up of events this August such as Afternoon tea on 17 August, a Vintage Affair and Classic Motor Show 24 – 25 August, and an exhibition celebrating 40 years as the home of British rock music which runs through the entire month. eastlife.co.uk | 125

Welwyn & Hatfield Two modern Hertfordshire boroughs

S

tanding side by side in the same borough, Welwyn and Hatfield are two vibrant and modern towns in the heart of Hertfordshire. Both have an impressive history with Roman archaeology in and around Welwyn and references to the Iron Age, while Hatfield has a strong Saxon origin. Today the towns have evolved to be a popular residential area, which continues to grow.

Things to do in Welwyn

Welwyn village is often referred to as ‘Old Welwyn’ to distinguish it from the newer settlement of Welwyn Garden City. One of the main attractions is The Hawthorne Theatre, which is also home to The New Maynard Gallery. For a summers day out head to Stanborough Park, a beautiful countryside park, covering an area of 126 acres, on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City. Awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award for the past 6 years, it is a great place for a family picnic, leisurely stroll or enjoy the rowing boats and pedalos on the lake. If you’re feeling peckish head to the High Street where you will

find The Wellington, which offers delicious fuss free food and quality accommodation. On the High Street you’ll also find a fabulous Italian restaurant called Aqua Restaurant, which serves traditional and contemporary cuisine in a modern and stylish environment.

Things to do in Hatfield

The town has largely grown up around the gates of its most famous attraction, Hatfield House. Today, the town features everything you would expect from a popular residential town. It has a nine-screen cinema, stately home (Hatfield House), Mill Green Museum, and a contemporary art gallery, Art and Design Gallery, The Weston Auditorium and music venue The Forum at the University of Hertfordshire. In addition to the town centre, shopping can be enjoyed at The Galleria The Stable Yard at Hatfield House, and at its two large supermarkets. Whether you’re looking for fast food, a quick bite to eat or dinner with friends there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. The town centre has many chain restaurants and pubs offering

traditional dishes. Tucked away inside the chic Beales Hotel in Hatfield, the Outsidein Restaurant is the perfect place for romantic rendezvous, discreet business dining or afternoon tea parties. Popular with glossy local gourmands and an international crowd, the dining room is decked out giving the space an intimate atmosphere. The Talk Bar is ideal for pre-dinner cocktails.

THE LIFE AND WORK OF THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH

G

ainsborough’s House showcases the life and work of the artist Thomas Gainsborough (17271788), one of the greatest painters in the history of British art. The work on permanent display allows you to explore Gainsborough’s whole career, from early portraits and landscapes painted in Suffolk in the 1750s to later works from his London period. The House dates from around 1500 and retains many original architectural features. Inside you will journey through the Exhibition Gallery to five other rooms displaying the work of Gainsborough and his contemporaries alongside period furniture and memorabilia.

Rivalling the interior of the House for beauty and interest is the splendid walled garden. With its centerpiece of an ancient mulberry tree, the planting in the garden reflects the shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals that would have been available in Gainsborough’s lifetime. The House can accommodate a maximum of 60 visitors. We offer Groups an introductory talk about the House and the works of Gainsborough. The talk lasts approximately 15 minutes. Talks on temporary exhibitions can also be arranged. The House has a newly refurbished gift shop with items carefully selected to provide a range of themed merchandise, based not only on Thomas Gainsborough, but on the heritage of Sudbury and the Georgian period. The new look shop includes books, clothing, food, toys and games, toiletries, ceramics and music, all offering something different to what is currently on the high street. Ideal for Christmas gifts.

Lesley and Brian will both be familiar to many from their television careers and I know they will put on entertaining cooking displays. The Aga Rangemaster Theatre Kitchen always draws big crowds at this event and with two very popular celebrity chefs taking part it will be no different this year.”

Two of television’s best loved chefs will be the stars of the show at the Ourburystedmunds Food and Drink festival this summer. Brian Turner and Lesley Waters will each headline on one day of the two-day event, organised by the Business Improvement District (BID) over the August Bank Holiday. Brian Turner who appeared on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ from its early days in 1994 and worked at various top London establishments before opening his own restaurant in 1986 will cook in the festival’s Aga Rangemaster Theatre Kitchen on Monday 25th August.

Cavendish Attractions

Located between Clare and Long Melford, Cavendish is a beautiful scenic village embodying everything you would expect from a traditional countryside parish. With its three village pubs, iconic Suffolk pink cottages and village green, it’s the perfect place to stop for a picnic. The village is famous for its picturesque green, thatched cottages and backdrop of St Mary’s Church. Wandering around the village you may feel as though you have been transported to another age; a time when life moved at a much slower pace. The village has a great sense of community spirit with many organisations and clubs. There are a number of events held at St Mary’s Church throughout the year. This month residents will have the opportunity to have a good clear up and sell unwanted items at the ‘Sale Trail’ taking place Saturday 9 August. Stalls will cost £10 to participate.

The Circular Walk gives you a real opportunity to see the fascinating history of both villages. The country park where you start has ample cheap parking and itself provides many attractions for a day out. There is a motte and bailey castle, a priory and a visitor centre housed in old railway buildings. The walk itself follows the line of the River Stour south, until you reach Cavendish where you cross, passing a beautiful old mill (now a charming residence). Walking through the village, you pass a number of lovely longstanding houses and other interesting buildings, including the Sue Ryder Museum (her former home). The green by the church is extremely beautiful and you pass thatched cottages (Hyde Park Corner). There are excellent opportunities for those interested in antiques, both in Cavendish and Clare. A Guide to Hadleigh Take a trip to the historic market town

A

pretty, little Suffolk market town close to the Essex border, Hadleigh is brimming with history and character. Once a Viking royal town and later a burgeoning wool trade town, it is home to some fantastic architecture, most notable in and around the High Street, Benton Street, George Street and the Market Place, where traditional timber-framed and colour-washed plasterwork buildings abound.

Attractions

Picturesque St Mary’s Church with its stunning lead steeple has attracted the attention of painters including Gainsborough, Turner and Constable, and is now home to the Hadleigh Choral Society that host several fantastic concerts a year. Adjacent to the church lie the fabulous red-brick Deanery Tower - the only remnant of Hadleigh Place – and the magnificent 15th century timber-framed Guildhall that is open to visitors and serves cream teas in the summer months. A little further away, the beautifully unspoilt Suffolk coastline

boasts picturesque villages, nature reserves and sandy beaches that are equally dramatic in winter as they are idyllic in summer. Nearer by, the moated Tudor mansion at Kentwell House and Gardens is well-worth a visit, whilst numerous public footpaths through town, several along the River Brett, make for a good walk whatever the weather. The weekly Friday market includes stalls selling local produce, whilst the High Street offers a range of independently run shops, ranging from homeware to gift shops. A farmer’s market is held on the first Friday of every month at St Mary’s Church. Slightly further afield, the peaceful country lanes of Monk Eleigh, one of Suffolk’s prettiest villages, are home to Bridge Farm Barns, a collection of independent retail businesses and tea room set in old farm buildings.

Places to eat

Housed in a beautiful 15th century building with wooden floors and beams and leaded windows, Crabtree’s offers award-winning, freshly ground coffee, a menu featuring fresh, local ingredients

and regularly plays host to live music events. Hadleigh is also home to a number of traditional pubs including The George, The Cock Inn, The Ram and The White Hart, all serving home-cooked British favourites. Alternatively, the White Horse offers a French-influenced menu, whereas the cheery King’s Head may well be, as it claims, the finest fish restaurant in South Suffolk.

Places to stay

Positioned on the High Street is Edge Hall, a magnificent Georgian town house, which offers the epitome of luxurious guest accommodation. This period residence reflects elegance, tradition and grandeur. The accommodation has six beautifully designed bedrooms. The Bildeston Crown is located in the heart of Suffolk’s picturesque countryside, close to the wool towns of Hadleigh and Lavenham.
