The place where you sleep and get your much-needed rest is arguably the most important room of the house. Don’t leave it out when it comes to the annual interior revamp... THINK SPRING Thick, plush duvets, electric blankets, and more layers of bed linen than your average mille-feuille are the order of the day (or night) in winter, when all we want to do is hibernate and be warm. But spring is beckoning and it’s time for a fresher, lighter look. The Pantone colour for 2014 is Radiant Orchid, a pretty mix of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones that bridges the gap between brights and pastels. This sets the tone for the way that colours will interact this year – accent brights pop against neutrals and subtler pastel tones. Incorporating this into your bedroom makes for a fresh spring look. INJECT SOME COLOUR Colour all over the walls can look overwhelming, and often makes a room seem smaller. But accent walls are a stylish way to add a fun pop of colour. Continuing the theme through other accent pieces such as lampshades, soft furnishings,
and varied accessories really pulls the room together and has a polished, neat look. Bedroom accessories are a low-effort, low-cost way to inject some style and ontrend colour into your room, and don’t necessarily need an accent wall to hold them together. Contrast is important, though, so make sure that
there are sufficient neutrals and subtler shades to balance out the colour impact. This will keep the room light and airy, as well as contributing to a chic well-styled finish. LET THE ‘LIGHT’ ONE IN Light is so important in interior design – so make sure you make the most of yours. Plenty of light fittings within the room
are definitely important, but if you can have them fitted, big feature windows are an emerging design trend and a great way to let as much natural light in as possible. Carpet matters
Carpeting matters. That’s what experts are saying today. Carpeting is the third largest investment the average homeowner makes. In years past, a carpet was considered a decorative addition, now it’s one of the basic building materials that help determine home value. Here we cover everything from different types of dyeing methods to materials most suitable for your home.
When you’re shopping for carpet, the fiber from which it’s made will be your most important consideration. The kind of fiber determines many of the carpet’s qualities and accounts for 80 percent of its cost. Remember that no fiber is right for all situations. Before you make your choice, you should look at a number of factors: LjY^Ç[& Ak l`] [Yjh]l ^gj Y bedroom, where there will be minimal wear and tear? Or a family room, where there
will be more? Or a hallway or stairway, which receives the most? :m\_]l& Hja[]k nYjq imal] widely. You should look for the best value that you can afford. Egaklmj]& ;Yjh]l ^gj Y bathroom, kitchen, basement or pool area may be exposed to dampness. Some fibers tolerate it, some don’t. Da^]lae]& <g qgm oYfl l`] carpet to last for decades? Or are you planning to replace it in a few years? ;`ad\j]f Yf\ h]lk& 9j] there likely to be spills and accidents? Kids playing on the floor? You should consider these things before choosing a fiber. Think about fiber in relation to other aspects of the carpet you’re considering.
For example, some fibers are best with low-pile or lowloop carpets. Some require greater density or more yarn twist. The actual dyeing method is another consideration. Some fibers can be solution dyed - the colour is mixed in when the fiber is being made. With stock dyeing, the fiber is dyed later and the colour does not penetrate. Solution dyeing usually results in a smaller range of colours available, but greater resistance to fading. Remember that not all fibers of a particular type are identical. There are different grades and qualities of every type of fiber. A low-grade, poorly made carpet may not be of value, no matter what the fiber.

Carpets CARPET MATERIALS Nylon is the most common carpet fiber on the market today. Nylon is largely noted for its durability. Because it’s the hardest of all the synthetic carpet fibers, it resists wear and abrasion. A nylon carpet will usually last longer than one made from another type of fiber. The fiber also has good resilience - it bounces back after being bent or crushed. It has excellent yarn “memory,” meaning that it holds its twist well. Nylon carpets are less likely than many others to show indentations after furniture has rested on it. It looks new longer than most fibers. Polyester is another popular synthetic fiber used in carpets. Less expensive than
nylon, it once had a reputation for being of poor quality. In recent years, polyester fiber has been improved considerably. It has its advantages and can represent an excellent value for certain applications. Polyester carpets present a beautiful appearance when new. The fiber has a very luxurious “hand” (the feel of the fibers). Polyester also comes in some of the richest colours of any fiber. Because it is processdyed, it has excellent fade resistance. Wool is the most expensive and luxurious fiber in everyday use for carpets. It has advantages over synthetics but costs considerably more. Wool is high-maintenance. It usually requires a professional
cleaner to do a careful job. The fiber has some stainresistance, but wool can absorb protein-based stains like meat juice and blood. It’s also sensitive to dye stains like tea, coffee and wine. Fortunately, because of the way the wool fibers bend light, it tends to hide dirt. Wool’s resistance to fire is another plus. While synthetic carpets can melt and burn, wool chars but does not burn. It can be a good choice if cigarette burns are a concern. Because it’s a natural fiber, wool is a sustainable resource. It has good insulating properties. It absorbs and releases moisture, serving as natural humidifier. It resists dust mites - a huge bonus if you suffer from allergies.

Decorating your
Loft
A loft conversion can be a tricky and time-consuming job but if carried out correctly by an experienced contractor, the results can be amazing. Not all loft spaces can be converted so before you get started TV property expert, Clive Holland, outlines key things to look out for before embarking on a loft conversion. Is there enough space for the required height? In terms of height you are going to want to stand up in it and bear in mind that the new floor could be as much as 150–200 mm higher than your existing joists. Does it have potential as a comfortable and viable living space? Is the roof sound? Make sure you can see the felt under the tiles. The roof structure is designed to keep all weathers at bay and to contain light loads of storage. Once it has been converted it will be able to withstand far greater loads because of alterations to the structure and flooring put in place. Commonly there are two types of roof: trussed rafter and traditional. Trussed roofs have been around since the late 1960s/early 1970s. These are not so good if you want to convert a loft and should never be altered without first getting the opinion of a structural engineer to do all the calculations. You will need to access your new living space with a staircase. If you have the available space leading off the
original stairwell this could save space and could be more cost effective. If not, you may well have to section off space in an existing bedroom with a studded wall partition. There are figures and parameters to bear in mind with the inclusion of a new staircase. The maximum pitch must not exceed 42 degrees, the riser of each tread on a domestic staircase should not exceed 220 mm, and the going (the flat bit) should be a minimum of 220 mm. You will also require a clear headroom space of 2m, although for some conversions the regulations allow a reduction to 1.9m at the centre of the stairs and 1.8 m at the edges. Once you’ve got the thumbs up to go ahead with your new loft conversion, it’s time to think about the interior. Without a doubt, a bedroom loft will always have a slanted ceiling, which restricts the height of your room. To solve this problem, think of fresh, light colours to give the illusion of a larger room. Neutral shades are best in these circumstances where white is usually the
popular choice. Skylights are a fantastic way to take advantage of slanted ceilings as it adds depth to your room by bringing in natural light. Slanted ceilings also have a habit of creating awkward spaces with not enough head room. Think about clever storage solutions for these difficult areas to maximise space, that way you won’t have to bring in additional furniture like cupboards or a chest of drawers that will take up extra room (something you want to avoid in bedroom lofts). You can always add a punch of colour to your room through soft furnishings or statement furniture. For example, ornate mirrors or a colourful duvet set will work wonders to bring a quirky edge. Put up feature wallpaper on a single wall or focus on colonial details like a range of harmonious textures and finishes for a layered, luxurious look. Or, opt for sleek minimalism. Keep colours and details to a minimum and play with bedside lights for a simplistic look that still screams style.

Make the most of your

Whether you’re updating an existing bathroom or starting from scratch, careful planning is essential to make the most of the available space in your home. From wall-mounted fittings to reflective glass tiles, our simple bathroom design ideas should help you get started. CONSIDER A NEUTRAL COLOUR SCHEME Open out the room using light, neutral or pastel colours on your walls, floor and ceiling. If you find monochrome boring, try playing with textures and finishes. Dark shades or hectic patterns shrink any room and should be avoided when decorating as they overpower and contract the space, and in a small room can create a look of disorder. If you’re desperate to add colour, use towels and other accessories to introduce a splash here and there. GOOD CORNERING Corner tubs tend to take up more room rather than less, so avoid this from the start. A corner sink, however, could be a good option, even a corner toilet if your plumbing allows. Newer toilets are generally more compact and square than older models, so it could be a good idea to upgrade even if you’re leaving it where it is originally. If you already have another bath in your house, you might want to consider having just a shower enclosure instead.
KILL THE CLUTTER The busier your bathroom looks the smaller it will appear, so do all you can to keep it looking tidy. Don’t keep any items on display that aren’t used on a daily basis and don’t keep anything in the bathroom that it’s not essential to have close at hand in there. SLIDING DOORS If your smallest room is so diminutive it’s not possible to have a door opening into the room, the obvious solution is to reverse the hinges so it opens the other way, but that’s
