Bedrooms

Light and Colour for a spring

Bedroom

The place where you sleep and get your much-needed rest is arguably the most important room of the house. Don’t leave it out when it comes to the annual interior revamp... THINK SPRING Thick, plush duvets, electric blankets, and more layers of bed linen than your average mille-feuille are the order of the day (or night) in winter, when all we want to do is hibernate and be warm. But spring is beckoning and it’s time for a fresher, lighter look. The Pantone colour for 2014 is Radiant Orchid, a pretty mix of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones that bridges the gap between brights and pastels. This sets the tone for the way that colours will interact this year – accent brights pop against neutrals and subtler pastel tones. Incorporating this into your bedroom makes for a fresh spring look. INJECT SOME COLOUR Colour all over the walls can look overwhelming, and often makes a room seem smaller. But accent walls are a stylish way to add a fun pop of colour. Continuing the theme through other accent pieces such as lampshades, soft furnishings,

and varied accessories really pulls the room together and has a polished, neat look. Bedroom accessories are a low-effort, low-cost way to inject some style and ontrend colour into your room, and don’t necessarily need an accent wall to hold them together. Contrast is important, though, so make sure that

there are sufficient neutrals and subtler shades to balance out the colour impact. This will keep the room light and airy, as well as contributing to a chic well-styled finish. LET THE ‘LIGHT’ ONE IN Light is so important in interior design – so make sure you make the most of yours. Plenty of light fittings within the room

are definitely important, but if you can have them fitted, big feature windows are an emerging design trend and a great way to let as much natural light in as possible. A focus on windows and natural light gives a fantastic contemporary look. UP-TO-DATE AND ARTY Play up edgy modernity with geometric, minimalist furniture and simple, broad lines. People are also beginning to realise the significance of art in bedroom design. Not only does it lift a room and give it an utterly contemporary feel, but also provides a chance for you to express your taste and give your room a really personal touch. East Anglia is the region of great artists and artistic inspiration, so pop over to our main magazine to have a look at our Arts pages and get started! Never underestimate the power of light and colour - a bright, airy, and slightly funky bedroom will lift your spirits on those nippy spring mornings that are just around the corner.

Kitchens

This year’s hot picks for your

Kitchen

Versatility and self-expression are the watchwords to give a fresh and functional look to your kitchen, the living core of the family home. Here is a small guide to the big trends of 2014. OPEN SPACE, OPEN MIND Kitchens are no longer cut off from the rest of the house. Following the latest trend, they open up into the living space, becoming open concept kitchens. Much more than just a cooking space, modern kitchens are also equipped with a highly functional worktop. Dining and

working zones can be visually separated by contrasting lighting and materials. Another interesting trend is open shelving, showcasing kitchenwares and food instead of relegating them to the usual closed cabinets. Static room plans are discarded in favour of a multigenerational and

universal design, taking the ages and needs of users into consideration, making for a flexible and comfortable space for everyone. IT’S ALL A MATTER OF COLOUR! 2014 sees a preference for neutral, soft tones rather than bright colours: from antique white or honey wood, to sandy and grey tones, giving a homely, elegant look. Bold colours are still used to emphasise small details, like kitchen utensils and accessories. Having said that, it’s all about choosing your own style. For a more classic look with a touch of urban minimalism, you can opt for a standard white or cream, or be daring with on-trend dark denim blue, one of this year’s most fashionable shades. If you fancy spicing up your kitchen, why not try adding some exotic patterns just behind the sink. Choosing different cupboard colours contrasts nicely with stylish neutrals. COMPACT AND GREEN One of the challenges of modern interior design is how to make effective use of small spaces.Try introducing a corner space for the sink and cooking hob. Many new

12

Homelife.indd 12

30/01/2014 15:12

models are available in 2014, from a pentagonal ceramic to an L-shaped stainless steel sink. Plus, investing in green energy appliances can ensure significant savings in terms of energy use and bills. For instance, the touchless faucet is growing in popularity, due to the fact that it is both practical and eco-friendly. STYLISH MATERIALS Practical doesn’t mean ugly.

Experiment with ways to make your kitchen classy and stylish, without losing its functionality. Quartz is the new granite - it is more durable, easy to clean, and crack and stain resistant. Incorporate 2014’s metallic trend simply by introducing some accessories such as a copper kettle and saucepans – expensive-looking but with small price tags. Pair metal with wood (worktops and cabinets) for a

rustic feel and overall effect. Try matching your floor and wall tiles (like the stone-effect finish) to create the illusion of a bigger room. The new wood-effect ceramic floor tiles immediately create a warm environment, and it’s also waterproof. Feel free to follow your creativity according to your budget and needs, and enjoy your personalised kitchen.

Pools

Upgrade your home with a

Pool

Dreaming of your own pool but afraid of time and costs? Consider it again, it may be not as unattainable as you think… Just imagine the convenience of being able to swim in the privacy, comfort and safety of your home - anytime. It’s not only a luxury for the privileged few, but is becoming widely popular as it is easier to plan and pay for than ever. It’s also a convenient longterm investment that can add value to your home. BEST PICK You will be surprised by the vast range of options available. Pools come in different sizes and shapes, depending of course on the budget and the needs of the owner, plus any limitations imposed by the site. Here is an overview: there are many standard sizes available like 24ft x 12ft or 30ft x 15ft pools; a pool can be built either above or in the ground, and from materials such as concrete, steel, plastic, and innovative composite constructions of fibreglass or polypropylene which considerably ease installation, saving time and costs. LET’S TALK ABOUT PRICES Building costs vary greatly from one installation to another. Some of the factors to be considered are type (above-ground is cheaper

than in ground), size and shape (rectangular vs. irregular), plus all the extras such as heating, excavation, landscaping, and decking. The good news is that with a basic budget as small as £1,500 you would be able to buy a 15ft diameter, aboveground pool (additional costs excluded). With some DIY projects you can reduce the total amount, however we suggest you rely on the local dealers, who can provide full assistance, from the planning to the fitting and after sales support. ALL ABOUT STYLE There are so many lovely design ideas for home pools out there, just pick your favourite. Straight, simple

lines in a narrow rectangular pool give a clean and sleek look; an oval-shaped pool with stone tiles evokes a rustic villa style; pool spas with great lighting can exploit small spaces for an attractive and sensory experience. WINTER TREAT If you are still not convinced by the benefits of outdoor pools, why not opt for a comfy and trendy Jacuzzi? Again, many models are available for your terrace, garden and even your bathroom. For an indulgent bathing experience, why don’t you pamper yourself during the colder months with a professional hydromassage system? You can have your very own spa at home – pure luxury.

Extensions

Let the outside in with a

Conservatory Planning on updating your conservatory? Try and create the perfect retreat with the simplest of changes. A new lick of paint, relaxed seating or even filling the space with exotic plants can have a huge impact. Make the conservatory a true extension of your home with the use of bold patterns and prints. Try adapting warm floral fabrics and wallpapers into your conservatory for an earthy atmosphere. Statement furniture like rattan pieces are key for that ‘real furniture’ feel that will last all year round. Add homely touches for a cosy feel like a rustic swing set for

the perfect reading spot. Alternatively, you can bring the outdoors in by creating a tranquil fresh feel in your conservatory with botanical prints in leafy greens teamed with shades of white for a light and natural look. Give a classic-style conservatory a modern twist with bold prints in orchid shades to add a dash of hothouse glamour. With floor-toceiling windows, a conservatory can often need livening up with soft furnishings. Brighten up the windows with an eye-catching patterned blind and add sleek cushion covers to match. Or, you can opt to take advantage of the floor-toceiling windows by using crisp white blinds for a minimalistic feel and make a focal point out of your dining table. Welcome

guests with a colourful table setting to suit the season. Use a summery fitted tablecloth and jewel-coloured tableware for a sharp contrast against your white backdrop. For even more zest, dot some lush greenery and planting in oversized containers around the room for an extra punch. Not a fan of blinds? Introduce country vintage charm and gain the same level of privacy with a whitewashed, fretwork screen and you won’t lose out on light. You can also complement great light from conservatory windows with floaty white curtains and stripped wooden floorboards. Add a bit of country charm with a floral tablecloth and seat pads on wooden chairs. Complete the look with a large bunch of flowers from the garden. Fill your conservatory with a variety of exotic plants. Go for ones that are tall with structural shape to brighten any empty corners. Choose a fabric with a bold leafy design for cushion covers, blinds and a table runner. Fabrics with splashes of zingy lemon will really spice up the look.

Carpets

Carpet matters

Carpeting matters. That’s what experts are saying today. Carpeting is the third largest investment the average homeowner makes. In years past, a carpet was considered a decorative addition, now it’s one of the basic building materials that help determine home value. Here we cover everything from different types of dyeing methods to materials most suitable for your home.

When you’re shopping for carpet, the fiber from which it’s made will be your most important consideration. The kind of fiber determines many of the carpet’s qualities and accounts for 80 percent of its cost. Remember that no fiber is right for all situations. Before you make your choice, you should look at a number of factors: LjY^Ç[& Ak l`] [Yjh]l ^gj Y bedroom, where there will be minimal wear and tear? Or a family room, where there

will be more? Or a hallway or stairway, which receives the most? :m\_]l& Hja[]k nYjq imal] widely. You should look for the best value that you can afford. Egaklmj]& ;Yjh]l ^gj Y bathroom, kitchen, basement or pool area may be exposed to dampness. Some fibers tolerate it, some don’t. Da^]lae]& <g qgm oYfl l`] carpet to last for decades? Or are you planning to replace it in a few years? ;`ad\j]f Yf\ h]lk& 9j] there likely to be spills and accidents? Kids playing on the floor? You should consider these things before choosing a fiber. Think about fiber in relation to other aspects of the carpet you’re considering.

For example, some fibers are best with low-pile or lowloop carpets. Some require greater density or more yarn twist. The actual dyeing method is another consideration. Some fibers can be solution dyed - the colour is mixed in when the fiber is being made. With stock dyeing, the fiber is dyed later and the colour does not penetrate. Solution dyeing usually results in a smaller range of colours available, but greater resistance to fading. Remember that not all fibers of a particular type are identical. There are different grades and qualities of every type of fiber. A low-grade, poorly made carpet may not be of value, no matter what the fiber.

21

Homelife.indd 21

30/01/2014 15:12

Carpets CARPET MATERIALS Nylon is the most common carpet fiber on the market today. Nylon is largely noted for its durability. Because it’s the hardest of all the synthetic carpet fibers, it resists wear and abrasion. A nylon carpet will usually last longer than one made from another type of fiber. The fiber also has good resilience - it bounces back after being bent or crushed. It has excellent yarn “memory,” meaning that it holds its twist well. Nylon carpets are less likely than many others to show indentations after furniture has rested on it. It looks new longer than most fibers. Polyester is another popular synthetic fiber used in carpets. Less expensive than

nylon, it once had a reputation for being of poor quality. In recent years, polyester fiber has been improved considerably. It has its advantages and can represent an excellent value for certain applications. Polyester carpets present a beautiful appearance when new. The fiber has a very luxurious “hand” (the feel of the fibers). Polyester also comes in some of the richest colours of any fiber. Because it is processdyed, it has excellent fade resistance. Wool is the most expensive and luxurious fiber in everyday use for carpets. It has advantages over synthetics but costs considerably more. Wool is high-maintenance. It usually requires a professional

cleaner to do a careful job. The fiber has some stainresistance, but wool can absorb protein-based stains like meat juice and blood. It’s also sensitive to dye stains like tea, coffee and wine. Fortunately, because of the way the wool fibers bend light, it tends to hide dirt. Wool’s resistance to fire is another plus. While synthetic carpets can melt and burn, wool chars but does not burn. It can be a good choice if cigarette burns are a concern. Because it’s a natural fiber, wool is a sustainable resource. It has good insulating properties. It absorbs and releases moisture, serving as natural humidifier. It resists dust mites - a huge bonus if you suffer from allergies.

Decorating your

Loft

A loft conversion can be a tricky and time-consuming job but if carried out correctly by an experienced contractor, the results can be amazing. Not all loft spaces can be converted so before you get started TV property expert, Clive Holland, outlines key things to look out for before embarking on a loft conversion. Is there enough space for the required height? In terms of height you are going to want to stand up in it and bear in mind that the new floor could be as much as 150–200 mm higher than your existing joists. Does it have potential as a comfortable and viable living space? Is the roof sound? Make sure you can see the felt under the tiles. The roof structure is designed to keep all weathers at bay and to contain light loads of storage. Once it has been converted it will be able to withstand far greater loads because of alterations to the structure and flooring put in place. Commonly there are two types of roof: trussed rafter and traditional. Trussed roofs have been around since the late 1960s/early 1970s. These are not so good if you want to convert a loft and should never be altered without first getting the opinion of a structural engineer to do all the calculations. You will need to access your new living space with a staircase. If you have the available space leading off the

original stairwell this could save space and could be more cost effective. If not, you may well have to section off space in an existing bedroom with a studded wall partition. There are figures and parameters to bear in mind with the inclusion of a new staircase. The maximum pitch must not exceed 42 degrees, the riser of each tread on a domestic staircase should not exceed 220 mm, and the going (the flat bit) should be a minimum of 220 mm. You will also require a clear headroom space of 2m, although for some conversions the regulations allow a reduction to 1.9m at the centre of the stairs and 1.8 m at the edges. Once you’ve got the thumbs up to go ahead with your new loft conversion, it’s time to think about the interior. Without a doubt, a bedroom loft will always have a slanted ceiling, which restricts the height of your room. To solve this problem, think of fresh, light colours to give the illusion of a larger room. Neutral shades are best in these circumstances where white is usually the

popular choice. Skylights are a fantastic way to take advantage of slanted ceilings as it adds depth to your room by bringing in natural light. Slanted ceilings also have a habit of creating awkward spaces with not enough head room. Think about clever storage solutions for these difficult areas to maximise space, that way you won’t have to bring in additional furniture like cupboards or a chest of drawers that will take up extra room (something you want to avoid in bedroom lofts). You can always add a punch of colour to your room through soft furnishings or statement furniture. For example, ornate mirrors or a colourful duvet set will work wonders to bring a quirky edge. Put up feature wallpaper on a single wall or focus on colonial details like a range of harmonious textures and finishes for a layered, luxurious look. Or, opt for sleek minimalism. Keep colours and details to a minimum and play with bedside lights for a simplistic look that still screams style.

Bathrooms

Make the most of your

Bathroom

Whether you’re updating an existing bathroom or starting from scratch, careful planning is essential to make the most of the available space in your home. From wall-mounted fittings to reflective glass tiles, our simple bathroom design ideas should help you get started. CONSIDER A NEUTRAL COLOUR SCHEME Open out the room using light, neutral or pastel colours on your walls, floor and ceiling. If you find monochrome boring, try playing with textures and finishes. Dark shades or hectic patterns shrink any room and should be avoided when decorating as they overpower and contract the space, and in a small room can create a look of disorder. If you’re desperate to add colour, use towels and other accessories to introduce a splash here and there. GOOD CORNERING Corner tubs tend to take up more room rather than less, so avoid this from the start. A corner sink, however, could be a good option, even a corner toilet if your plumbing allows. Newer toilets are generally more compact and square than older models, so it could be a good idea to upgrade even if you’re leaving it where it is originally. If you already have another bath in your house, you might want to consider having just a shower enclosure instead.

KILL THE CLUTTER The busier your bathroom looks the smaller it will appear, so do all you can to keep it looking tidy. Don’t keep any items on display that aren’t used on a daily basis and don’t keep anything in the bathroom that it’s not essential to have close at hand in there. SLIDING DOORS If your smallest room is so diminutive it’s not possible to have a door opening into the room, the obvious solution is to reverse the hinges so it opens the other way, but that’s

not always an option either. If you find this is the case and things are starting to get a little awkward, installing a sliding door can be a great way to save floor space. ACCESSORISE Replace all your towels, pots and rugs. You can purchase everything separately, or shop for coordinating sets. Add a few pictures or plaques on the wall (but don’t overdo it). Buy a new hamper and wastebasket. An assortment of new accessories can uplift the look of any bathroom.

Fireplaces

Keep warm with a

Fireplace Fireplaces are making a comeback, adding romance, grandeur or a modern edge to a room. Turn the clock back fifty years and the traditional fireplace looked like a thing of the past. Central heating had taken over as the main source of warmth. But now the humble hearth is returning to fashion. Not only can a new fireplace or stove keep you and your loved ones cozy in the colder months, they can add thousands to your property value and buyers are seeking them out. Historic home expert and director of Jackson-Stops & Staff, Dawn Carritt, said: “Whenever we ask prospective country house buyers what they want more than anything else, the reply is always the same: ‘We must have a fireplace.’” Modern fireplaces are sleek and can bring class to any room. Whether placed in a wall or free standing, modern fireplaces are aesthetically pleasing and can be customised to suit the look of your contemporary home. However, for many, fireplaces bring to mind the look of a traditional home, which is easy to achieve. Though these Georgian and Victorian styles bring an authentic look to your home, they are equipped with the latest technology to bring both elegance and safety. Whatever your design preference, there is a fireplace to suit your taste. Whether electric, gas, wood or oil, contemporary fires are suited for any room you choose. Keeping your home heated with fireplaces can combat the soaring costs of energy bills in the winter months. When considering installation, make sure to speak to your contractor about ways to make your fireplace the most efficient.
