o matter how hard you try, finding furniture to fit a specific space in your home and make it look like it was meant there, is pretty near impossible. When looking for furniture for your home finding some that both suits its purpose and fits the area without having too much wasted space around, can be incredibly difficult. With unlimited options, for both size and finish, bespoke furniture is the preferred choice of interior designers and those who appreciate the value and quality above standard mass produced furniture. Traditionally only really within reach for the very affluent, it has become much more accessible and affordable thanks to bespoke cabinet makers like Newmarket-based Andrew Manning. Andrew has worked with leading BIID interior designer members for twenty years but increasingly now sees that private clients are contacting him direct for both small and large projects. When Mr and Mrs Winch moved to the Newmarket area from London, they knew they wanted bespoke fitted furniture throughout, for their new home, as they had installed and benefited from bespoke furniture and cabinetry in their London home. “Having custom made fitting and furniture utilises every available inch of space,” says Andrew. “The owners on this occasion happened to give me a fairly precise idea of what they required,” says Andrew, “as they had adapted ideas from the houses of friends, so we just had to make it to their size specifications. “They wanted to keep the design contemporary but not necessarily minimalist. The effect of using dark stained timbers against light coloured carpet and walls helped to create this look as well as not using door handles, instead opting for catch release door closers.” So if your plan is to stay in your home more than just a couple of years bespoke carpentry maybe something to consider and benefit from. It also adds value to your home when you come to sell it! For more information visit www.andrewmanning.co.uk or contact Andrew Manning on 0771 276 9964, 01638 508047 or email info@andrewmanning.co.uk

Cabinet shuffles Newmarket-based bespoke cabinet maker Andrew Manning makes the best use of your space, and adds value with quality work...
Dressing room
In the sitting room, fireplace Sitting room alcoves always present a design issue. Some interior designers mirror both sides while others use the depth of the alcove to fit deep shelving useful for ornaments, books and a place to site the essential television. Mrs Winch knew she needed to utilise this space so she asked for a combination of lower cupboard (to conceal the small flat screen television when not in use) with upper bookshelves, which was constructed from ash veneer and stained dark. Andrew fitted xenon lighting to illuminate the shelves when required. This was also fitted underneath the bottom cupboard to give the impression of the unit ‘floating’.
Master bedroom
For the master bedroom the fitted wardrobe has high gloss white lacquer doors and a contrasting dark stained ash interior. The two colours work together to give an opulent luxurious feel when you open the wardrobe doors to reveal the interior. The internal drawers have a ‘grip groove’ on the top edge instead of handles for a cleaner finish. The absence of handles helps to maintain the linear, contemporary look. The wardrobe has interior lighting that turn on automatically when the doors are opened. There is also lighting fitted to the top of the cupboard as well as the plinth that when lit gives the impression that the whole wardrobe is floating for a very modern look. www.eastmag.com
The dressing room also features dark stained ash shelving to gives a luxury feel to a small space. The shoe shelves are angled to make access easier as well as to show of the shoes to their best for display. The drawers have the same gripgroove handles and the mirror is full length. The units (although not shown in the photos) continued around three walls.
The study / home office was specifically not to look like a boring office space so the low cupboards are wall hung and have xenon lighting underneath which, again, creates the floating effect. The shelves above are cantilevered from the wall, supported by metal rods which are fixed into the wall to support serious weight. Again the shelves are fitted with xenon lighting in the undersides to give the impression they are floating.

Totally
floored A quick guide to choosing the right flooring for your needs
WHICH FLOORING? Hardwood flooring Hardwood floors, unlike carpets, do not harbour or collect dust and other allergy particles and for this reason wood floors are often recommended for allergy-prone people. While hardwood flooring is generally one of the more costly flooring options, hardwood maintains its value over time and, if properly cared, for doesn't show the wear and tear some synthetic products do. Solid real wood can be re-finished for a longer life. Tiles Tiles are always a good choice for flooring, they’re hardwearing, suitable for underfloor heating and amazingly versatile. Natural stone tiles include limestone, marble and slate, or you can opt for man-made varieties, such as porcelain and ceramic. Large tiles make a room look more spacious, and using the same tiles on the walls and floors creates a fashionable, streamlined effect in a bathroom. Laminate Laminate flooring is useful for heavily used areas of the home. Specially designed water-resistant laminates are available for the kitchen or bathroom. There's a wide choice of laminate flooring, many have sophisticated textured finishes that faithfully recreate the look of solid wood. For convenience, choose glueless laminate. Handscraped laminates have the finish of real wood, they feature a woodgrain textured surface, are stain resistant and do not fade in strong sunlight. Wood effect textured laminates feature a durable, scratch resistant top-layer finish. Vinyl Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms vinyl is waterproof, easy to maintain and hardwearing. Cushioned vinyl versions are comfortable to walk on. If you are after the look of a natural material, but don't have the budget, vinyl is a cheaper alternative. Many are designed to resemble wood, marble, stone and metal, all for a fraction of the cost. Vinyl tiles are an alternative to sheets, these are available with self-adhesive backings and are fitted by simply peeling off the back and sticking down. Carpet There’s nothing like a carpet for generating a cosy feel to a room, carpets also help to insulate, cutting down sound and providing extra warmth. Heavy use rooms need a hardwearing, close-pile carpet, rooms with less traffic can accommodate a deeper pile, softer carpet. Carpet tiles are useful for children's rooms and play areas as they are easy to repair and replace, simply remove the damaged tile and replace with a new one.

Keeping costs down Wood-look laminate flooring designed to click-fit gives the effect of real wood parquet but is a fraction of the price. If you prefer to be able to change the look and colour of the room every few years and are less concerned with the lifetime of the carpet, the cheaper foam-backed carpets are a good option. Many carpet sellers provide an edge-binding service, this is a cost effective way to turn cheap carpet off-cuts into rugs.

Big Brother and Essex celebrity Chantelle Houghton spent two weeks at No1 Boot Camp, Classic Weight loss & fitness Boot Camp in Norfolk in a bid to lose weight before her appearance in last year’s TV Reality Show. After the two gruelling weeks at the boot camp, Chantelle lost over a stone. Here she tells us about her experience as a bootcamper....
goes to
BOOT CAMP What made you want to go to the Boot Camp and what did you hope to achieve? I’ve followed several diets in the past and nothing has worked long term. No 1 Bootcamp was recommended to me and I liked the idea of following a full-on exercise regime alongside a healthy diet. It was something new and exciting that I'd never tried before. Fad diets just don’t work but this does. It’s all about changing your mentality to exercise and diet. Are you someone who exercises regularly and eats healthily? Yes I am now. No 1 Bootcamp changed that for me. I exercise three to four times a week and follow a healthy diet. I do have days off though, where I treat myself to a bit of chocolate or a glass of wine. You can’t deny yourself things or it just won’t last. What sort of training were you put through? Everything! We went running every day at 6am. There is lots of cardio, which makes you drop weight. We did press ups, sits up, sprinting, weight lifting and lots of jumping 32

about. There were mega long walks too and by the end of the day you are so tired you sleep like a baby! What was the hardest thing you had to do during your time there? An 11 mile walk! I cried three times and thought it was never going to end. Did you at any point think you wouldn't be able to make it through the two weeks? Yes, but a good nights sleep helped and I was fine in the morning. What kept you going? It’s not easy but it’s not meant to be! But the results do pay off and what kept me going was seeing the results before my eyes. I also felt completely energised and relaxed. It’s great to just go there and focus your mind. What was the food like at Boot Camp? It was absolutely delicious. I was thinking it would have been bland plain rice morning noon and night but honestly the food is amazing. They have a chef from a top London restaurant so he knows how to be created. We ate things like grilled tofu and steamed veg but made so well it just tasted delicious.
You lost weight while you were at the Camp - were you surprised by how much you lost? Yes completely! I could see it was working when I looked in the mirror though and I sent my friend a picture of my flat toned tummy and she couldn’t believe it! Everyone who goes there loses weight, you are bound to because you are training hard as well as eating sensibly. What did you learn about yourself during and after your Boot Camp experience? That if you focus your mind you can achieve anything and it's a a lot easier than you think you just have to go for it. I've learned to be happy with my body and make the most of it and to follow a diet sensibly. Would you do it all again? Definitely. I haven’t felt this good in my whole life. It’s an honest regime and diet and it lasts. You don’t suddenly pile on the pounds again. I follow my exercise DVD at least three times a week and that’s like bringing bootcamp indoors, which is great for everyday lifestyles. But I’d definitely go to Bootcamp again; it’s great for the body and the mind.
love it. I feel completely at home there. Where’s your favourite place to shop? I love Lakeside, it’s got everything under one roof. If you were going out for a daytrip, where would you go? For Christmas, to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and then for hot chocolate and the cinema. Do you have a favourite Essex restaurant? Smiths in Ongar. It’s one of those places where you can get properly dressed up, be properly looked after and the food is delicious. Southend or Clacton? Southend. I used to go there when I was little to the beach. What are the best and worst things about where you live? The best thing is it’s near all my family and the worst thing is if you fancy a night out in London it's a bit of a trek!
Do you think you’ll always be an Essex girl? Yes! It’s where I grew up and I
Chantelle’s Boot Camp Workout DVD is out now and is available at all major retailers
From Wickford in Essex, Chantelle was the only non-celebrity in the Big Brother house in Celebrity Big Brother in 2006. And yet she won! She was born in Basildon in February 1983 and before going into Celebrity Big Brother, she lived with her mum Vivian and her stepdad Dean. She left Bromfords School in Wickford when she was 16, and took an office job and then worked at a bank. While Chantelle started to pursue a career in modelling, she also worked in The Duke, a pub in Wickford and had a part time job on a make-up counter in London's West End. Her modelling work included making the last twelve of Miss Greater London and being a Paris Hilton lookalike. Chantelle met musician Preston of the Ordinary Boys on Big Brother and they married in August 2006. Later that year she published her autobiography, Living the Dream. The marriage lasted little more than a year, but Preston and Chantelle were reunited in last year’s Ultimate Big Brother, and remain friends. Chantelle came third in the show.

THE XJ FACTOR The Jaguar XJ is so good, it’s almost worth not getting married for! Sue Cooke explains...
Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before evolving into passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials
etting married is only perfect if your guests remember and talk about your wedding day for days, weeks and months after. So you must have the right car to take you to the church, one which offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and is a rare sight on the road. Jaguar’s new XJ is one of the most beautiful fast cars that I’ve ever driven. Trouble is there is a chance that you won’t get married, because you won't want to get out of it! The exterior has been constructed with an aluminium chassis, using state of the art techniques learnt from the aerospace industry. Ultimately you may not care whether the body structure is aluminium or steel, but an aluminium chassis means
G

the car is lighter meaning improvements in performance and handling and better fuel economy and emissions too. As aluminium is also stiffer the Jaguar inherits Herculean properties, which means excellent safety and crash protection. An innovative new panoramic glass roof could provide the opportunity to wave at your guests as they enviously watch you leave the church. Venturing into the interior is like taking a step into a sumptuous world of hedonism. The cabin blends elegant, contemporary design with comfort, luxury and sporting style. Lots of chrome and piano black detailing provide an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully-crafted leather and veneer surfaces. And just in case you need reminding that you are in a Jaguar, logo, name and the cat
like image appear everywhere. More akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a simple car cabin, there is awe inspiring new technology and a premium surround sound entertainment system. The long wheelbase model offers an even more sumptuous and refined environment for rear-seat passengers with an additional 125mm of legroom. The 520 litre boot can swallow two large going away suitcases side by side. Even the short wheelbase is a very large car, but despite its size I found it easy to park, particularly with the help of a plethora of new technology. Visibility through the rear window is slightly compromised because it is so narrow. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine cannot be heard in the cabin which is ultra quiet and

Otley College at 40 Otley College based eight miles north of Ipswich turned 40 this year. Throughout the last 12 months, the college has been involved in a number of events to celebrate their special anniversary. We look back at the colleges’ history and reflect on the last 12 months. riginally set up as an agricultural college back in 1970, Otley – as legend has it – opened its doors with a couple of tractors, a barn, two lecturers and sixty students. Four decades on, the college now offers an array of educational opportunities for students of all ages and around 9000 are currently studying on courses. Although Otley has diversified over the years, it has never lost sight of its agricultural origins. In fact, Otley has recently employed an agricultural schools co-ordinator whose job is to go out and talk to young people and make them aware of the exciting career opportunities that are available within farming. And the intake of agricultural students is slowly on the rise. But recent developments have allowed new departments to thrive. A Foodskills centre was opened in 2001 allowing local businesses the opportunity of developing products that are now sold at some of the biggest stores in Britain (such as TESCO and Fortnum and Mason). A new state of the art equestrian centre was opened by Princess Anne in 2006 that was approved to be used as a training centre for the London 2012 Olympics – as yet, they are still hoping a team will use this facility. A construction block was opened in 2007 by the then Minister for Skills, Phil Hope MP and thousands of learners have already enjoyed the benefits of the centre. Most recently, new developments have included a farmhouse business and conference facility, a brand new classroom and reception area, an aviary, cricket, football
O
and rugby fields along with an aquatics zone that houses Piranhas. Throughout the last year, Otley decided to make the most of their fortieth anniversary and started the year by inviting award winning garden designer and TV presenter - Chris Beardshaw - to kickstart the celebrations. He also hosted a master class for some of the colleges higher education students. Next up was an annual Big Day Out event that has now been running for six years. The mini county show had a forty year theme throughout and despite the unseasonably cold weather, 4500 visitors came along to help join the festivities. Shortly after the Big Day Out, Otley invited forty businesses to join them at their main marquee at this year’s Suffolk Show. In their own take on the artistic triumph in Trafalgar Square called the Fourth Plinth, forty local businesses – including two dancing gorillas from the company Go Ape – all had 15 minutes to champion their business in a fun and unusual way on Otley’s ‘Fortieth Plinth’. A garden party took place in the summer where former Principals came together with current staff and supporters of the college from across the last four decades to reflect on Otley’s past, present and future. At the event, current Principal, Philip Winfield, said, “As a college and a business serving the needs of our community, reaching any notable landmark is worth recognising and it was great to be joined by a selection of guests who were able to share in our celebrations.” Most recently, Lee McQueen who won the 2008 version of the TV show The Apprentice
Otley in 1970

came to an event aimed at championing Apprenticeship qualifications to students and the local business community. McQueen hosted a question and answer session with Otley students from across the college before talking to an audience of around 100 guests from the local business community. He said, “I really enjoyed visiting Otley College and meeting both young apprentices and business people from this region. Clearly there are a lot of good things happening in East Anglia in relation to Apprenticeships and this is good to see.” And the final event of the year saw college staff rewarded for their contributions at an awards event. “It’s been an amazing year,” said college spokesperson, John Nice. “The college has made remarkable strides forwards since opening all those years ago. But those achievements mean nothing if you rest on your laurels. We have a lot of interesting events already planned for next year – including our 7th Big Day Out event on the 7th May 2011 – and we are fully behind the governments plan to support young Apprentices in the UK.” “We would like to thank all of our many supporters for their efforts in helping us over the years, and look forward to working with them again - and indeed many others for the first time – in the months and years to come.”

Choosing a school
O
ne of the most important decisions you will make for your child is the school you choose. To have the best chance of getting your child into the primary or secondary school of your choice, you must apply well in advance. The process of choosing a school for your child can seem daunting, but starting your preparation and planning early can help you to make a well informed choice. Remember that all parents need to make an application – even if your child’s current primary or nursery school is linked to the school you want them to go to next, you won’t be considered for a place unless you apply. Making an early start will mean that you’ll be less likely to miss key deadlines. Start by looking online for schools in your area pr by contacting your local authority and ask for a list of schools in your area. Once you know which schools are near you, get as much information as you can about them. This will give you a better idea of which schools might suit your child most. For example, you might like to: • Visit the schools • Read the schools' most recent Ofsted reports
• Read the local authority’s and schools’ prospectuses Once you have narrowed down your list of preferred schools, it’s time to apply for a place. Before submitting your application, it’s very important to read the school’s admission criteria; different schools have different criteria. If the school you’re interested in is popular, the admissions criteria will give you a
realistic idea of your child’s chances of getting a place there. Whatever you do, don’t miss the deadline. RESOURCES http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk http://childcarefinder.direct.gov.uk http://familyservices.direct.gov.uk The Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) 0808 800 5793
Types of schools... Mainstream state schools All children in England bet ween the ages of five and 16 are entitled to a free place at a state school. Most go to state schools. Children normally start primary school at the age of four or five, but many schools now have a reception year for four year olds. Children normally leave at the age of 11, moving on to secondary school. Most state schools admit both boys and girls, though some are single-sex. The four main types of
46
state school all receive funding from local authorities. They all follow the National Curriculum and are regularly inspected by Ofsted. Specialist Schools Though they follow the National Curriculum, specialist schools focus on a particular subject area. Examples include sports, technology or visual arts. State schools with particular characteristics Within the state schools
system described above, there are a number of schools with particular characteristics. As with other state schools, admissions are coordinated by the local authority. However, some may have different admission criteria or funding arrangements. These include Academies, City Technology Colleges, Faith Schools, Grammar Schools, and Maintained Boarding Schools. Independent Schools here are around 2,300

independent schools in England. These schools set their own curriculum and admissions policies. They are funded by fees paid by parents and income from investments. Just over half have charitable status. Every independent school must be registered with the DfE. Standards are regularly monitored by either Ofsted or an inspectorate approved by the Secretary of State, ensuring that the school maintains the standards set out in its registration document.
The Leys in Cambridge offers 11-18 year olds a balanced mix of academic excellence, creative opportunity and physical challenge. In the FT’s latest A level league tables of UK independent schools, The Leys is ranked number ďŹ ve of the co-educational boarding schools listed. With a 75-acre leafy campus to enjoy on a boarding, home-boarding or day pupil basis, Leysians develop independence and responsibility, achieve excellent results and forge enduring friendships - an ideal base for those with an appetite for the future.

Taking the

W
ith difficult economic times now a fact of everyday life, workers up and down the country are considering their futures. And for many that means looking at improving their skills to ensure they are in the best position to take advantage of any opportunities. Since it was introduced in August, the Next Step adult careers service has helped more than a quarter of a million people look at their options and prepare for their futures.
Next Step offers free and impartial careers information and is available online. The service gives advice to help people achieve their ambitions and move forward in work and life, taking control of their destiny and setting them on the road to success. In these uncertain times, Next Step can provide a lifeline to those people who are facing redundancy and need support to enable them to get straight back to work. Everyone can register online with ‘My Next Step’, a secure, personal online space where they will be able to assess their skills, build a CV, find a suitable course and discover what other support, including financial assistance, could be available.
There is a dedicated redundancy support area of the website where individuals whose jobs are under threat can access lots of useful information aimed at helping them get straight back to work. It includes advice on skills development, writing CVs, interview techniques, how to find out about what jobs are out there and much more. Next Step adviser Emma Bowers has recently been advising workers who are considering making a change. “There are things that people can do to help themselves when applying for jobs,” Emma said. “These include focusing their job searches, rather than making haphazard applications, and thinking about identifying their transferable skills and achievements and confidently communicating these to potential employers. “By putting together tailored, functional-style CVs, individuals stand a much better chance of making a good first impression with any potential employers. I would also advise people to try networking and making proactive, speculative applications directly to employers, rather than waiting to apply for advertised vacancies. By doing this, people can uncover roles which will attract fewer applicants. “It is often a lack of confidence that stops people taking steps to change their lives, with people feeling trapped and without any goals to strive towards. Next Step aims to help people overcome these barriers and create a positive future by changing their lives, whether in their current job, by changing career or taking the first step on the career ladder.” To find out how Next Step can help, search online for Next Step, call 0800 100 900 between 8am - 10pm, 7 days a week, for telephone advice or to make a face-toface appointment at a location near you.
Luton-based father of four, Thomas Fitzsimmons, was referred to Next Step from his local JCP to assist with his cv needed in his search for work. Thomas, 50, had previously been a hod carrier, but injured his back and could not continue with that type of manual work. Having been signed off sick for nearly 3 years and receiving treatment for his injuries his condition improved to a point where he was able to look for work of a less strenuous nature on building sites. His adviser assisted with his cv but during the discussion it materialised that it would be useful for him to access Forklift Truck training. If he could get help

with the funding of the training, Thomas felt that he had enough contacts within the industry to secure work as a Fork Lift Truck driver. His adviser informed him of a local discretionary fund, which could support the cost of the training up to £500. Together they completed the application form, and Thomas was successful in securing the full cost of the 5 day Fork Lift Truck Training course. On hearing that he had been awarded the funds Thomas said “I have a clear way now of getting my licence so that I can get back to work on building sites. If I hadn’t accessed the service, I would still be

Whether you’re looking for a job or looking to get on in your career, improving your skills for work can open up new opportunities. There’s a huge range of courses available. Some are free, and you may qualify for financial help. There’s also plenty of free advice to help you decide what’s right for you. If you’re aged 13 to 19, Connexions Direct can give you all the information and advice you need to make decisions on learning, careers and more. Call 080 800 13219. I can’t do the work I used to do on the sites, but this will give me a chance to get back to the same type of work but doing something different that I can manage with my back problem” Thomas has now successfully completed his course and has returned to his adviser; not to gain more advice this time, but to fulfil his promise of buying her a bunch of flowers to thank her as, in his words “it is all down to her that I got the funding.

A range of land-based subjects are offered at five centres across London including Animal Care, Arboriculture (Tree Surgery), Balloon Artistry, Countryside Management, Environmental Conservation, Floristry, Garden Design, Horticulture and Saddlery. There are centres in Enfield, Acton, Crystal Palace, Regent's Park and Romford. Capel Manor College was established as a centre for horticultural studies in 1968. A strong tradition of quality provision has been built over the years for a growing number of students. The team of specialist staff, facilities and resources for the study and practice of horticulture are unrivalled and its recognition as a centre of vocational excellence for horticulture, landscaping and garden design Ten students, aged between 10-13, of Southwold’s Saint Felix School, recently arrived home tired and excited after a half-term school trip to the United States of America. Led by the Deputy Headmistress, Miss Fran D'Alcorn, the group had an action packed seven days that supported their studies in Politics, History and Art. They arrived in New York on the first Saturday of half-term where the students toured Ellis & Liberty islands, visited Ground Zero and saw the new developments taking place there and experienced the extensive views from the top of the Empire State. After a four hour coach journey through 'New England in the Fall' the party arrived in Washington DC where they were able to spend time in the Capitol Building and some Sixth Formers also attended a talk in the Supreme Court. collection of plants, he went to work in Regent's Park for the Crown Estate. He has now returned to Capel Manor, aged 20, to take a one year diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture.
Sow the seeds of your future in horticulture With a heightened awareness of our planet and an increased interest in green issues, horticulture is even more important now as an ever expanding career area. There is a huge range of career and employment options in the commercial and environmental sectors as well as in research and journalism. Working at weekends in landscape gardening as a teenager initially got Robbie Murison (pictured) hooked on the great outdoors. He moved on to spend a year working alongside world-leading scientists at Cambridge University after taking a BTEC National Certificate in Horticulture at Capel Manor. After spending 2008 working as technician at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, helping maintain a two century-old
“Capel Manor has really set me up for the future. When I finish my course I'll have a range of qualifications which employers like. I don't fit into just one category and I'm confident that if I go into a workplace now and they ask for something slightly off-topic I can provide an answer. “My course gave me a good scientific background. I got to work with the world's top botanists at Cambridge and look after collections of plants which were brought back by Darwin from the Galapagos islands. I wouldn't have been able to get there if my lecturers hadn't suggested it to me and been so supportive.” Capel Manor College (08456 122 122) www.capel.ac.uk
Saint Felix Students take a Bite of The Big Apple ed, “It was good to get to know some of the younger students, and we all found America surprisingly different from what we expected. It was so different from England, despite feeling like we know the continent so well from what we see in the media.” Students were amazed by the amount of security, even getting into the café at the Holocaust Museum, which had airport style detectors, and a hot-dog stand could not be walked past without purchasing one of the American favourites. Max McLean said, “Time square was incredible. How busy it was really showed what New York was like as a City. And visiting the Guggenheim Museum tied in with what we are studying in History at the moment.” Further highlights of the trip included Arlington cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, the American Jewish Museum
and the Smithsonian art galleries. The Suffolk school will be holding their entrance examinations and scholarship days for entry in September 2011 on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th January.

Long Melford is fairly unusual for a village in that it has a parish church of dimensions more suited to a cathedral. Originally completed in 1484, Holy Trinity Church is the one of the richest “wool churches in East Anglia and is renowned for its flushwork, The Clopton chantry chapel and the Lady Chapel at the East end with some surviving medieval stained-glass. Edmund Blunden, the World War I poet, is buried in the churchyard.

Here’s how CAMRA described the inn: ‘A traditional ale house dating back to 1837, situated just outside the town centre. There are six handpumps with some additional beers served direct from the cellar. The main bar is rustic with scrubbed floorboards, and there is a separate parlour area. No music, TV or gaming machines. The landlord and staff are knowledgable about the beers they sell and offer a warm and friendly welcome. Originally planned for December, this amazing spectacle was postponed when snow in Northumberland prevented vital equipment being moved to Suffolk. EXPLORE | Long Melford My Long Melford... John Trowman of Trowmans, a family business in the village
Long Melford is one of Suffolk’s most attractive villages, and in a nationwide poll by Savills, the estate agent, it came 7th in Britain as one of the most desirable villages to live. It has a long, long High Street - two and a half miles to be exact; the longest in England - populated by charming independent shops, vibrant art galleries, antique centres, cafes, restaurants, and, of course, typical Suffolk inns. This, combined with beautiful architecture and amazing countryside, and it is no wonder that Long Melford is such a desirable place!

We have worked in Long Melford for 3 years. The High Street has everything you need with lovely old fashioned shops and friendly service. You could not ask for more, Long Melford has beautiful countryside, magnificent thatched properties and quaint cottages. Shopping puts you at ease with free parking, cafes and pubs for morning coffee or lunches, and a variety of shops from hairdressers, women’s fashion, and two very large antique centres. My favorite building is The Bull public house. The best way to experience the High Street is a relaxed walk down one side popping in for a coffee on the way and a stroll down the other side popping in the antique centres. All the pubs on the high street have their own individual qualities - The Bull /Cock & Bell /The Swan but they all give exceptional service in good old fashioned surroundings. There are several restaurants on the High Street. If you are with family and friends try the Cafe Masala Indian restaurant or have a romantic meal in Scutchers. Or why not try a coffee in Fine Foods Coffee Shop or light lunch or coffee in The Lounge. If you have lots of time, Sunday lunch at The Bull is not to be missed. There are several ladies fashion shops, so gents bring your wallet! If you are looking for a really unusual gift with quality, why not visit trinity gallery. In case all this is to much for you to take in why not visit the Long Melford website (www.longmelford.co.uk) which gives excellent information on all the shops and facilities.

EXPLORE | Diss Diss, in the Waveney Valley on the Norfolk Suffolk border, with its beautiful mere and 16th century timber-framed houses is a successful, picturesque market town with an eclectic mixture of shops to explore. The town centre has some superb Georgian and Edwardian buildings, thriving shopping streets and market place. Market days, every Friday, are always full and busy. Shoppers come from miles around and are accompanied by music from local buskers, a weekly event that coincides with a local antiques and collectables auctions at Gazes Saleroom. Speciality markets, flea markets and farmers markets are also held regularly in the town. The late Poet Laureate, John Betjeman, voted Diss his favourite Norfolk town, and it's not difficult to understand his enthusiasm. While it is fringed with pockets of modern housing, much of the medieval property that gives the town centre its charm has escaped the developer's glare. This was due in no small part to the famous poet, who described Diss as 'the perfect small English town'. Betjeman first visited the town in 1963 while working on a BBC series on English market towns. When he stepped off the train, Betjeman is said to have headed for the Jolly Porter - a small pub soon to be replaced by a cement works. His concern for this kind of 'demolition by degrees' led to his involvement in the preservation of the town.
Nearby Bressingham is a must to visit with its amazing Steam museum, with over five miles of narrow-gauge steam lines and four journeys to choose from, 20 acres of gardens - renowned worldwide for their horticultural excellence - and its Dad’s Army exhibition, which comprises a recreation of Walmington on Sea the fictional home to Captain Mainwaring and his men. Bressingham Steam & Gardens, Low Road, Bressingham 01379 686903 www.bressingham.co.uk On picturesque Fair Green, The Cock Inn has been a landmark tavern in the town for over 500 years. The bar has a wide selection of typically 6 real ales from the cellar, with 2 rotating guest ales and there’s a short but top quality menu in the excellent restaurant. Look out for regular live music. Lower Denmark Street, Diss (01379 643633) www.cockinndiss.co.uk Shopping in Diss is a pleasure. The Market Place is home to a Friday Market, Farmers' Markets & Fleamarkets, and there are four courtyards where you will find individual, independent shops offering a wide range of goods. Mere Street is the main shopping area of the town where a range of shops including a number of ‘high street’favourites as well as many independent retailers can be found.
The Mere, a six acre lake, is said to be the second deepest in the country and dates back some 12,000 years to the ice age. In the severe winters of the 19th century skating carnivals were often held on the Mere and even a cricket match in 1827. The mere is 60 feet deep, with 40 feet of mud in places. 72
Diss Corn Hall is a fine example of a 19th century corn exchange in the heart of the town, which is today used as an arts and entertainment venue. This month the Mere Players present their family pantomime, Santa & The Vikings (19th-22nd), a tale of war, pillage and raucous innuendo! The last Friday of each month is the excellent comedy club, and other events to look out for are 60s band The Honeycombs (4 Feb), country singer Raymond Froggatt (12 Mar) and John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett (28 Apr). For more details call 01379 652241 or go to www.disscornhall.co.uk www.eastmag.com

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch Weekend (29-30 Jan) is an annual survey where the public are asked to record the highest number of each bird species seen in their garden, or local park (not flying over) at any one time. During the event’s 30 years, more than 3 million hours have been clocked up watching and enjoying the birds that visit our gardens (that's more than 380 years!), and every year, some 6 million birds are spotted by people. With results from some 280,000 gardens, it has helped the RSPB to create a 'snapshot' of bird numbers in each region - and they’ve been able to see that some of our birds are disappearing in scary numbers. We've lost more than half our house sparrows, and three-quarters of our starlings. If you don't want to do your birdwatch at home, or just want to pick up tips for a wildlife-friendly garden, there’s number of events in the region for you to enjoy: Rye Meads Nature Reserve 22-23 Jan Talk about garden birds by an expert and an adventure trail for families. Rye Road, Stanstead Abbotts, Herts (01992 708383) The Lodge Nature Reserve 26 Jan Special bird observing walk. The annual Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival (15-16 Jan) is a revival of an ancient farming rite where a ploughman is dressed up in straw (the straw bear) and leads a procession of dancers and folk musicians through the village. The week leading up to the procession is marked by concerts and a celidh, and the Saturday procession sees all the village pubs packed out with Morris dancers performing at each one. In the evening there are barn dances and celilidhs and on the Sunday the Straw Bear is burnt. Events include a Barn Dance at Sir Harry Smith Community College, Eastrea Road on Sat 15th; a Cajun Dance at Park Lane Primary school, Park Lane, also on Sat 15th.
