[that's what our audience says!]
WELCOME Come June 2019, we can confidently make you one promise: there will be glorious sunshine at the 15th East Neuk Festival. It may well come from the sky, but if not, the music will warm and delight you in the company of such radiant geniuses as Dvořák, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Haydn. Each year we ask the ENF audience for feedback and this year we are taking a bold step in response. In 2018, we were delighted to see a stream of comments praising the comfort, sightlines, atmosphere and ease of access at The Bowhouse. We also discovered that its acoustic works as well for soloists and ensembles as for orchestra, so this year we are presenting a full series of evening concerts there, and one or two more besides. By coincidence, we also have ensembles and repertoire which will suit a bigger space: the Belcea and Pavel Haas Quartets join forces for Mendelssohn’s Octet; Peter Whelan handpicks Europe’s finest wind players for Mozart’s Serenade for 13 Winds; and ENF favourites Alec Frank-Gemmill and Alexander Janiczek do the same with Camerata Janiczek to create their own period orchestra to play Mozart and Handel concertos.
BUS If you want to come to The Bowhouse by bus, we may be able to help - please see p15 for details of a bus scheme we are piloting for our evening concerts there. NB all quotes in this brochure have been made by
of the +44 ENF audience unless2000 otherwise noted. 2members Tickets: (0)131 473
THE DRYING GREEN Throughout our festival week (from 23 June), come and enjoy a large-scale art installation at Kellie Castle and Garden inspired by the humble village drying green. These were the communal places where women (mainly!) could dry the family washing but also meet, chat and pass the time. We celebrate that sense of community by stringing vibrant banners across the wild meadow at Kellie, creating an art installation that is also a maze, a playground for all ages. On 29 June, it becomes the backdrop to The Garden Party, a festive afternoon of informal, fun, lively, merry, family-friendly music. See p12. Supported by EventScotland’s Beacon Programme NB These are outdoor events, so if the weather looks like it will turn inclement we may have to cancel the pop-up concerts, and the drying green may only be viewable from a distance. Before travelling please check our website, Facebook or Twitter for updates, or call our box office.

Musicians are always on the go, travelling between concerts and projects and (sometimes, even) home. Every year at ENF they cross paths with friends and new faces, and sometimes that leads to other things – perhaps a new collaboration or experiment. Over the past few years, 2 of the world’s finest quartets – Belcea and Pavel Haas – and one of its greatest pianists – Elisabeth Leonskaja – have encountered each other, and this year they come together for a series of 5 concerts that are so special, you will find nothing like them elsewhere. Solo, quartet, quintet and octet – a treasure house of delights from the classics of chamber music performed by the ideal musicians.
The consistently high standard of all performances and some really outstanding players combined to make this festival, with its careful management,
the best I've attended in my long lifetime. I should add, this festival just gets better each year. Highest praise to the management and organisers.” 4 Tickets: +44 (0)131 473 2000 or hubtickets.co.uk/eastneukfestival
FINCH & KEITA A Welsh harpist and Senegalese kora master met 6 years ago. She knew nothing of the kora, and he didn’t know much classical harp music, but that serendipitous meeting sparked a close friendship and a musical adventure. They have since given concerts worldwide and created 2 award-winning albums, finding a huge amount of common ground and drawing on their diverse traditions to develop the synergies that transform them. Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita come to ENF with a 3-concert residency, performing individually and together, and playing a range of music that reaches from Bach to freshlyminted creations.

ENF RETREAT NEXT STEPS This year sees an evolution of our ENF Retreat programme. From the 40-odd remarkable young musicians who have come to Fife to participate so far, we have invited 2 to return and take part in 3 concerts – solo, chamber and concerto. As time goes on we’ll do this more and more, building up a family of players who regularly appear at the festival. This year, violinist Benjamin Baker and violist Diyang Mei take this next step with us, giving an intimate duo recital on Thursday, joining a chamber ensemble with the other Retreatants on Friday and playing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the SCO on Sunday. Benjamin led the ensemble at the very first ENF Retreat concert. Since then he has joined the roster of the prestigious Young Classical Artists Trust, won 1st prize at the 2016 YCA auditions in New York, toured China, Argentina, USA and Chile and made solo debuts at top venues in Europe and the USA. Diyang joined the 2016 ENF Retreat, and has since been awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship as well as winning 1st prizes around the world at a whole list of competitions. The quality they single out is his wonderful musicality. The 5th ENF Retreat runs from 23 – 28 June 2019. If you would like to support ENF Retreat, please get in touch – contact details on page 16.

As a charity, we need your support, please
BECOME AN ENF 2019 PATRON
Did you know that it costs approximately £300,000 to produce the East Neuk Festival? And that the real cost of an ENF ticket (if you were to divide our budget by the number of attenders) would be about £72? Yet we are able to charge less than a quarter of that on average, and ensure that as many people as possible are able to come to our concerts. It takes a surprising amount of resources to plan, prepare and present ENF and to bring the world’s very best performers to the East Neuk. The festival is organised by only a few parttime staff and we are proud to run a very tight ship. We have earned the support of public bodies, trusts and foundations, as well as individual Patrons. We are grateful to them all but it is our Patrons who continue to be the primary source of our income. Many of you have already given us your support for 2019 and we warmly thank you. Because ENF 2019 will again feature the Retreat, by supporting us now you are also nurturing the next generation of outstanding musicians, helping them to keep the music we all love as vibrant as it is now. There are many good causes that deserve your support but we hope we are one of them. Please become an ENF 2019 Patron and help keep this tight ship afloat, our ticket prices affordable and the artistic standards world-class!
