EDITOR’S NOTE
From now on, Thursday, October 26, 2017, the date of the royal cremation ceremony of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, shall be remembered as the saddest day for Thai people, the last time we can pay our respects to the beloved king.
On this occasion, East Water would like to feature ancient wisdom of water management as the main topic of this issue in recognition of the efforts people in the past made to solve water issues. These inventions have been very crucial to the comfort modern-day people have when it comes to water use. Then, we have two stories for anyone looking for business ideas, in the ASEAN Watch and About a Biz columns. The first has to do with “Talad Tor Yod,” a market and platform for businesses that want to get into the AEC Market. And the other one is about “Mobile Fitness Centers,” a new business very popular overseas at the moment. This issue is still full of great content that will widen your perspective and give you inspiration. So, don’t miss any column.

ANCIENT WISDOM OF WATER MANAGEMENT FOR COMMUNITY
COVER STORY
Water is the most important resource for human life. That is why most major civilizations prospered around water basins, such as the Nile River Valley in Egypt, the Indus River Valley in India, the Huang He River Valley in China and the Chao Phraya Basin in Thailand.

However, only building a city on a river basin did not guarantee that the water resource would be abundant all year around. Therefore, our ancestors also invented and developed systems to irrigate, distribute, store and drain water, ensuring that they would have enough water throughout the year.

WORLD WATER MANAGEMENT WISDOM
SUKHOTHAI CIVILIZATION Sukhothai people had advanced irrigation technology. Because the city was not connected to a large water resource, drought was common during the dry season. So, Sukhothai people modified their natural surroundings to better manage water. An earthwork called “Thamnop Phra Ruang” was built to carry water from mountains to a dam, which was called “Saritphong,” before draining the water along streams into irrigation canals around the city and reservoirs, or “Tra Phang,” that were built at important locations in the city.

The Indus River Valley in today’s Pakistan was where the Indus Civilization, one of the most ancient civilizations in the world, was located. These people worshipped water and prayed at the river every day. Because of their faith, the water management wisdom of the Indus Civilization was particularly advanced. Archeological evidences show that to prevent floods earthworks were built and the city’s ground level was raised, and household wastewater was released outside the city via a system of sewers. The city also constructed public baths and wells as well as a drinking water pipe system to provide the city dwellers with access to water.

The valley of the Huang He or Yellow River was another major civilization before the Christian era. The main problem of the Huang He is the yellow deposits that made the river shallow and change its course, often resulting in floods. Based on historical accounts, 1,590 floods have been recorded in 2,540 years, each time causing tremendous damage to properties and lives, so much so that the river has been dubbed the Sorrow of China. However, the ancient Chinese had developed different methods to deal with floods, such as constructing high river banks and dams and digging canals that ran parallel to the river. They also created areas to store water and canals that distributed water to remote agricultural areas. COVER STORY
NILE RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATION

The Nile River Valley Civilization occupied both sides of the Nile River. Every year from mid-August to October, water from melted snow and the rainwater from the mountains would flow into the Nile and flooded a large area on both its banks. After the water receded, the deposits that came with the water offered fertile soil for agriculture. To optimize their use of the river water, ancient Egyptians constructed dikes and lakes to store water for use during the dry season and developed a calendar along with agricultural seasons. Their irrigation system was among the first in human history.

Sukhothai has had a man-made dam for irrigation since the ancient time. Called “Saritphong” or “Thamnop Phra Ruang,” the dam has become an important tourist destination in the province, providing both natural beauty and historical value.
07
Saritphong was an ancient dam built when Sukhothai
was a Siamese capital city. Originally, it was an earth dike one to two meters tall, sending the water from the mountain to the city’s canals. Today, the Fine Arts Department and the Royal Irrigation Department have renovated the Saritphong into an earth dike that is 10 meters tall and able to store around 400,000 cubic meters of water. So, today’s Saritphong looks like a mid-sized dam, becoming a tourist site for people to come and enjoy a view of beautiful mountains.

"The heart-shaped island", or Koh
Roop Hua Jai, is a man-made island in the middle of Thung Thalay Luang in Pak Kwae Sub - district, Mueang District, Sukhothai Province. It was born out of a royal initiative to solve the perpetual issues of floods and droughts in the province. A natural basin was transformed into a heart-shaped dam and is named Thung Thalay Luang, with a heart-shaped island as a place for relaxation and a multipurpose venue for events organized by the province. Meanwhile, the “Sacred Ground” refers to the earth used to make the heartshaped island. The earth, sourced from 843 villages in Sukhothai and made sacred by a religious ceremony, was used at the foundation of Phra Phuttha Rattanasiri Sukhothai, a Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara that is over 700 years old, presumably created in the reign of King Mahathammaracha of Sukhothai.

FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS “ Thailand has the best monarch. The Thais are the luckiest people.
We felt proud about this fact for 70 years.
more money do we make? Some make six or seven digits a month but still feel they don’t have enough.
So, what took place on October 13, 2016, was the most devastating event for Thai people. Another saddest day will be Thursday, October 26, 2017, when the royal cremation ceremony of King Bhumibol Adulyadej will be held, the day the “Strength of the Land” will forever leave us.
The more we have, the more we spend. That’s our nature. If we get money easily, we spend it easily, too. We probably have bought something that we never get to use. This is why we keep making more money and have no time to rest so that we will feel that we have “Enough.”
In this great loss, we would like to recall the great disposition of the king, particularly with small things in daily life, like being sufficient, something most of us talk about but never manage to achieve. Do you still remember that when you first graduated, your salary was so low that you barely made ends meet? But you managed to survive. Today, how much
But did you know that most of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s personal belongings are not of big brands or costly. And he was economical when using them. For example, he always used liquid soap and toothpaste until their last drop and wore a piece of garment for 8-10 years. In case of a tear, he got it mended and would not get new clothes unless for a very special event. The watch he always wore cost only 750 baht. These are the accounts given by Dr. Sumet Tantivejkul, Secretary-General of the Chaipattana Foundation, and Sompop Louilarpprasert, the king’s tailor.
If you love the “Father,” why don’t you follow in his footsteps? Didn’t he already prove during his lifetime that his path is the way to sufficiency, which leads to contentment? If you feel content, you feel sufficient. And that’s when you get to rest, both your body and mind. 10

THE BOILING FROG THEORY
Source
“The Boiling Frog Theory” article by Mangmao Club Tom Kob by Mua Kao Hud Khub.
If you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out and survives. But if you put a frog in water with normal temperature and slowly heat it, the frog will stay and die because it does not discern the sudden heat.
14
The boiling frog theory applies to a scenario in which a stock’s price slowly dropped while investors did not realize or ignore them due to familiarity and did nothing until they ended up selling it to avoid greater loss. The same also applies to the opposite scenario in which a stock’s price continued to rise and investors bought it but after that the price gradually fell, forcing them to sell or suffer further loss.
IS WATER MAGAZINE
WATER STOCK
Here is one good example. Mr Ruay bought a ZZZ stock with technical strength and gradually took profit. Later, there was news saying the stock had good fundamentals and its price went up as high as 15%. Mr Ruay then bought more of the stock but after that the price started to alternately hold flat and move up to the point that he faced loss. When indicators flashed sell signals, Mr Ruay assumed the stock price should be able to return to profitability because the target price remained high and fundamentals still looked favorable. Eventually Mr Ruay suffered a loss of 30%. This situation truly and often happens to investors and from small-cap to big-cap stocks, including IPO stocks.
GROWTH INVESTORS This type of investors can also take profit but they must stay vigilant about not being the frog that fails to perceive the danger and is cooked to death.
VALUE INVESTORS
Growth investors are likely to outnumber value investors who are not much sensitive to changes in a stock’s price but focus on the ability to generate profit and increase sales and the outlook for longterm growth in companies they invest in.
Value investors apparently seek stocks that appear to have “reasonable price” which, in several cases, are several times higher than the current share prices. The value investors will continue to hold onto their stocks without a slight hesitation as long as
This type of investors use actual value of companies in making buying decision, holding or selling stocks. The value investing easily applies to other investing strategies and has low risks.
the companies are conducting businesses and showing operating results in consistent with their investment strategy. Therefore, the story of the boiling frog can be analogous to investors who lack discipline. 15

INNOVATION TO CLEAN UP THE WORLD’S OCEAN OF PLASTICS BOYAN SLAT CEO and founder of the ocean cleanup
19
Boyan Slat was 19 when he found out that the number of waste was much bigger than fishes in the coastal area when he visited Greece four years ago. After learning about the situation, Slat was determined to rid of the world’s ocean of plastics. He researched about the ocean and learned about “Gyres” or a circular pattern of currents in an ocean basin. He also found that the waste is moved in the ocean as gyres because plastic doesn’t sink into the ocean. Therefore plastic waste from the shores would be floated in the ocean surface and become “Ocean Garbage Patches”.

After the research, Slat invented the drifting systems. By utilizing the ocean currents to their advantage, the passive drifting systems, which is made in V-shape and 3m-deep into the ocean, are estimated to be the simplest solution which doesn’t affect other inhabitants of the ocean.
The innovation has been installed in Japan and is expected to fully operate in 2020. However, it is estimated to take more than 10 years to clean up the Ocean Garbage Patches. But if the amount of waste continue to drastically grow, no innovation will be able to solve the waste problem sustainably.

At present, the mobile fitness center business is very popular in the U.S. Some of the major players in the market include Inform Fitness, a famous fitness center that goes mobile by transforming a bus into a mobile gym installed with six pieces of equipment. The mobile gym can serve up to two customers at a time. With only 20 minutes, the customers can work out every part of their body, a great service for people who have limited time.
Other popular mobile fitness centers include Tumble Gym Bus, a neon green school bus with gymnastic equipment like cushions, vaults and bars, providing classes and programs for children aged 2 - 6; and Boxing Bus, a bus installed with punch bags and other equipment, perfect for anyone interested in boxing to build strength, increase metabolism and release stress.
Another interesting idea combining exercise with environmental protection is the Paris Navigating Gym Project, a floating 20 - meter long fitness vessel with a transparent glass covering that is installed with bikes and
cross training equipment and is able to host up to 45 people. The vessel floats along the Seine River in Paris, fueled by the energy generated by the people exercising as well as the solar cells on the roof. It allows health lovers to enjoy the view along the river while working out.
