WORST RIVER WORST LIFE

LIVES RUINED BY POLLUTED WATER While the world is experiencing freshwater scarcity, we also see many sources of fresh water becoming so polluted they can’t be used for consumption and causing harmful impacts and damage to fisheries, agriculture, the ecosystem and the health and well-being of people living nearby. This further aggravates the whole water crisis.

Since ancient times, people have often chosen to live by the water. A river is then a lifeline that supports human life, being a source of drinking water and food as well as a route for travel. So, rivers or canals and our ways of living are inseparable.

But if the water turns dirty and toxic, can we still have a quality life? Among all the polluted water sources in the world, the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia, is one of the most polluted. With all the waste and chemicals dumped into the river by villagers and factories, the river is covered by a massive amount of garbage and 60% of fish can’t live in the water. Nonetheless, millions of people still have to depend on this river for agriculture, fisheries, cleaning, cooking or even drinking.

COVER STORY

According to local villagers, sometimes the Citarum turns red, green, yellow or black depending on the color of dyeing color released into the water. This is in line with data given by the Deputy Environmental Minister of Indonesia, who said a high level of mercury, a chemical used in dyeing color and believed to be the main cause of the increase in skin diseases and cancer in the area, was found in the river. In addition, the World Bank indicates that six million tons of garbage and chemicals are thrown away into rivers every day, resulting in over 50,000 deaths of people living nearby annually.

Photo from: www.austroindonesianartsprogram.org

Ibu Sutria, a 57-year-old woman living in a hut by the Citarum, said, “People excrete and throw away garbage in the river, and the children play in the water because they don’t have anywhere else to go and play. So, dysentery and diarrhea are common here.” One local fisherman revealed he could no longer fish after seeing all the fish die in the river. “Everyone is well aware of the result of throwing away garbage into the river. There are also regulations in place. But nobody cares,” he said. According to Edward Carwardine, a representative of UNICEF Indonesia, poor families in Indonesia lack access to clean water. The water they use is contaminated with E. coli bacteria, which causes diarrhea and is the cause of death of more than 20,000 children aged under 5 every year.

Photo from: www.austroindonesianartsprogram.org

STOP HURTING RIVERS AND OUR LIVES While the severe pollution in the Citarum has made it in the top ten most polluted rivers in the world, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has also warned that five other rivers in Asia, namely the Salween, Ganges, Indus, Yangtze and Mekong, are among the most at risk from pollution and global warming. The threats to the quality of the five rivers include climate change, dams and infrastructure, pollution and over-fishing. If left unresolved, this could affect the way of life and health of over 870 million people in China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and India as well as countless natural resources and aquatic animals.

Knowing what’s at stake, it’s up to us whether we’ll do something to solve the issue or else have another river or two becoming like the Citarum. Source

COMFORT TO AIR-CONDITIONED ROOMS

By Catherine Songphatanayothin

The cool air from an air conditioner has become a necessity for people in the age of global warming. Every day, from the moment we wake up and then go to school or work, have a meal at a restaurant, go shopping and return home, we spend most of our day in an airconditioned environment. But do you know that, apart from the cool comfort, air conditioning also brings “Dryness?”

No matter what form it takes or where it is, water brings great benefits to us. Thank the earth for having water.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the U.S., the average relative humidity for someone's home should be maintained between 30-50%. So, we should not set the temperature below 25 degrees Celsius because when the air is cold, water vapor will condense into water and is released through the drain pipe. This results in humidity dropping below a suitable level, thus causing dry skin and itchiness, irritating your nasal passages and throat and causing discomfort. However, this problem is easy to solve. The missing moisture can be brought back with water. FIRST SOLUTION Dampen a sponge in water and then put it in a plastic bag. Hang the bag in the room. The water in the sponge will vaporize out of the bag to increase air moisture in the room. The vapor won’t drip and make the floor wet either. But don’t forget to dry the sponge before reuse to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Who would have thought that something we can’t see like vapor can help us feel comfortable, breathe more easily and moisturize our skin?

SECOND SOLUTION Poor hot water into a container with a wide opening. Place the container in an air-conditioned room; the vapor will increase humidity. Be sure to place the container in a safe place away from children.

BE INSPIRED

BE INSPIRED THE WOLF STRONG MIND, POSITIVE THINKING By Catherine Songphatanayothin

Once upon a time, a Cherokee old

man was sitting with his grandson by a river. He wanted to teach his young man a precious life lesson. The old man leaned forward to look at the face of his grandson and asked: “Did you know that there are always two wolves fighting insde each of us? The first wolf is named “Evil” which refers to anger, jealousy, greed, ego, and hatred. The second is named “Virtue” which relays to happiness, serenity, love, compassion, humbility, and faith.” The grandson listened before turning to the old man and asked : “Which one won?” The old man smiled and said: “The one we keep feeding it.” With this simple practice, the virtue wolf will definitely win and bring us to the cycle of happiness and success in life.

IN OUR HEART

Human beings were born with two groups of emotions. The first is the negative emotion such as anger and sadness while the second group is the positive emotion such as happiness and love. These two groups are like the wolves in our heart. The question is: which wolf we wish to feed today? If we choose to feed the first wolf, that means we choose to live on the negative emotions. For exple, we keep thinking about the past and never let go, or we keep comparing ourselves to others until envy occurs. Let us feed our heart with useful food such as reading one inspirational article a day, listen to motivational speech that is filled with creative ideas, and meditate for 15 minutes before going to bed, or spending time with good friends.

SCOOP

When HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn representing HM the King to preside over the opening of Rachalothorn Reservoir, the royal initiative project, on January 28, 2016, the hope of people in Chonburi was re-ignited on the historic day. The project was one of the projects to improve water resources in the upper part of Bang Pakong River by the Department of Royal Irrigation. The project was first prepared for construction in 1966 but hit a snug on 1972, destroying all hopes of the local residents who had regularly suffered water shortage and natural disaster. HM the King decided to continue with the project and ordered the reservoir to be constructed on May 15, 2009. The new water source, covering 1,800sq km, was completed last year with a budget of 9.3 billion baht, to separate the Klong Luang from the main river of Bang Pakong.

Photo from: www.jamrat.net

The name of Ratchalothorn carries an auspicious definition, which means the water resource of the king. With his great knowledge in water resource, the reservoir is compared as the King’s great heart that showers his kindness on to his people. Water has always been HM the King’s main concern for his people. Because he knows that “Water is life”.

Photo from: www.pattayamail.com

The Rachalothorn reservoir is built of earthen dyke, of 3.829km long and 21.85m high, with a capacity to hold 98 million cubic meters of water. With its capacity, the water source is able to take care of 44,000 rai of agricultural land in 11 tambon in koh Chan and Panat Nikom districts of Chonburi. It is the water source for consumption, agriculture, and to keep balance of the ecological system, to help ease the natural disasters in koh Chan, Panat Nikom, Pan Thong, Bo Thong, and Muang districts. It is also aimed to be a new tourist destination, a source for fishing, as well as an aquaculture expansion center. The royal initiative project features a large number of benefits. It will also divert water to fill the nearby Bang Pra Reservoir, which has stored the unpredictable amount of annual rainwater, to its full capacity. The project will also become another water resource for agriculture and consumption for small villages in the Eastern region, ensuring the increasing demand will be met in the future.

WATER STOCK

TOO MUCH MONEY HOW TO INVEST? Since the Hamburger Crisis in 2008, countries with a large economy have all adopted relaxed financial policies, such as cash injection and interest rate cuts, in order to increase liquidity in the economy. For example, the US government has implemented several rounds of quantitative easing (QE) to avert the collapse of its financial institutions, which would result in a disastrous breakdown of the capitalist system.

Thus, what results is the world having “Too much money” in the system. Looking at Thailand, as the Thai stock market began at its lowest level at 300 points and reached its highest level in 1,600 points in 2014, many people have been curious to know if the Thai economy will grow as much as the stock market. When the world has too much money, it has nowhere to go but to enter the stock market. As a result, the valuation or P/E ratio of the current market is high and even too high at some periods. This causes the fluctuation of the stock market as we have seen, which leads to the decision of most investors to hold on to their investment even though the prices are too high. They simply don’t know where to move their investments to. However, as bad news hits the market, they are quick to dump their stocks to carry cash instead.

NO.37

OCTOBER 2016

WATER STOCK

So, how should we invest in the stock market then? Well, there’s no one right answer. These guidelines provide three options for making your decision. 1. HIGH DIVIDEND YIELD STOCKS

2. STRONG STOCKS BASED ON AVERAGE At this time in history, interest rates are P/E RATIO

so low and in some countries set at a negative value. Therefore, getting your returns from dividends is a rather safe option. Stocks that yield good dividends usually have low downside risk and often experience little price drop. Because of high dividend yields and low fluctuations, investors buy these stocks because their performance can be forecast no matter how the economy is. These stocks include water plants with secure water trade agreements, construction companies with long-term bidding contracts and power plants with secure power purchasing agreements.

Investment contains risk. Please read the prospectus before investing.

Source

• Investment Science 101 and Settrade’s blog

Strong stocks are clear winners in an industry and have a potential for long-term growth. The P/E ratio is a simple tool widely used for investment decision making, even though past P/E ratios can’t guarantee what proper current prices should be. Still, strong stocks are always strong despite the market fluctuation that can push their prices out of the average P/E ratio. In the end, if a stock performs well and has investor confidence, it will eventually bounce back to stay above the P/E ratio.

3. GROWTH STOCKS (PEG RATIO VALUE OF 1)

The majority of investors puts importance on growth and prefers “growth stocks,” which have a potential for high net profit growth over a period of 3-5 years. As their profits grow, the prices of these stocks continue to make an “all-time high.” However, even growth stocks have a chance of not growing and there’s a risk of buying these stocks at a price too high to provide a worthwhile return. So, investors prefer to hold growth stocks long term because their prices will eventually get high enough to cover the investment. To calculate a share price that can offer a compound growth over a specified period of time, use this formula. If you think Stock X will grow X%, invest when the P/E ratio equals X time.

ASEAN WATCH

Drinking coffee and chilling out at a coffee shop has become a way of life for today’s young people. It’s not unusual to see young office workers waiting in a long line to buy coffee from a stall inside an office building, at a chic cafe popular in social media or a coffee shop cum co-working space that is the working environment of the cyber generation.

NO.37

OCTOBER 2016

ASEAN WATCH

The continued growth of the coffee drinking culture has made coffee a major export for countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and some ASEAN countries, especially Vietnam and Indonesia, which are the second and third largest coffee producers in the world following Brazil. At present, Vietnam is the world’s number one producer of Robusta coffee. The Vietnamese government has put great emphasis on the production and trade of coffee, hoping for the country to become the leader of the coffee industry by 2020. As for Thailand, we’re ASEAN’s third and the world’s 19th largest coffee producer and a major instant coffee exporter in ASEAN. Our main markets are also ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia.

As long as drinking coffee remains popular, business opportunities await everyone.

However, even though Thailand is among the top coffee producers in the ASEAN region and coffee is on the country’s sensitive list*, the AEC trade agreement that has set the import tax on coffee at 0% since 2015 has resulted in an influx of coffee products from neighboring countries into the Thai market. Undoubtedly, this has an impact on Thai coffee farmers and businesses in one way or another. Therefore, all involved parties should work together to develop the Thai coffee industry in various aspects, from increasing farming efficiency to creating an identity for Thai coffee, and promoting domestic consumption as well as export so that our coffee industry can grow with strength and compete in both ASEAN and global levels. *A sensitive list is a list of products that are important and have an impact on the economic and social development of a country. Therefore, these products prefer few competitors and require time to build strength for their industry. Four products are on Thailand’s sensitive list, namely cut flower plants, potato, coffee and coconut meat.

Five years ago, multi - billionaire Canadian-American Elon Musk imagined a trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles in Hyperloop where passengers traverse the route in pressurized capsules through the reduced-pressured tube. Two years later, the project took off and Hyperloop One was eventually tested in Nevada desert in May this year. Hyperloop successfully demonstrated at 187km in 1.1 second. A complete system will be tested again before the end of this year. Musk thinks he can move cargo by 2019 and passengers by 2021. If the new mode of transport comes true and is implemented, the transportation of the world will reach a new height. Hyperloop can travel at 900km per hour, which is faster than an airplane, two times faster than Japanese Shinkansen, and four times faster than Chinese bullet train. But better than all, Hyperloop is environmentally-friendly as it is driven by solar power.

Life in Thailand will be much easier if we have a Hyperloop. The transportation problem and pollution will be taken care of. And Thailand will certainly be the hub for transportation of Asia.

The activity follows a training programme in building water-absorbant aerator machines with the Ban Khai Technical College in Rayong province. The innovation was transmitted to them by the Ubon Ratchathani Technical College, which entered the 3R water management contest organized by East Water in 2010.

East Water CEO Jirayut Rungsrithong visits the Singapore International Water Week 2016 with his team of executive directors. Apart from having had the chance to study innovative water management techniques from experts worldwide, East Water executives met with Olivia Lum, Executive Chariperson and Group Chief Executive Officer at Hyflux Ltd-the world's first membrane system producer - to discuss investment opportunities in the water sector. The water-absorbent aerator functions through a rotation system, which brings water from the bottom to the surface and oxygen from the surface down to create oxygenation and improve water quality. It is a way to improve the quality of water released by communities in residential areas before it flows down rivers and other surface water areas. The installation of aerators has efficiently reduced water pollution problems in Wangchan and creates an inclusive way to preserve water resources and the environment.
