EAST WATER MAGAZINE

COVER STORY

WATER Consider the Amount Before Buying and Carefully FOOTPRINT Think Before Discarding By now, you must be well familiar with the term “Carbon Footprint,” a tool used by many countries to evaluate the amount of greenhouse gases produced by a product. The concept has led to the push for different measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacturing sector. Based on the same thinking, the world has today come to know the term “Water Footprint,” created to deal with the increasingly severe water crisis.

WATER FOOTPRINT

TRACES OF WATER ON PRODUCTS The water footprint is an indicator of the amount of water used directly and indirectly by a product, starting from its production process to the delivery to consumers. Taking into account both the amounts of water used and wastewater released, the indicator measures in cubic meters per ton. The water footprint of crops looks at the amount of water used in crop production. That of animal products is calculated from the total water consumed in production of animal food, feeding, water consumption by animals and other activities including the cleaning of stables. Meanwhile, the water footprint of crop and animal products measures the total water footprints from producing crops and raising animals.

NO.35

JULY 2016

COVER STORY

The concept of water footprint was introduced in 2002 by Professor Arjen Y. Hoekstra, the former executive director of the Water Footprint Network, which began to collect data on the water use of different products and services. The result of the study made a huge impact on a global scale as it marked the first time the world realized that a large amount of water was used in production processes, something a lot of people didn’t expect.

WATER FOOTPRINTS OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS 1 glass of wine

117 liters

1 cup of coffee

140 liters 2 eggs

272 liters

For example, production of one kilogram of beef requires 15,415 liters of water while production of one kilogram of chicken meat requires 4,325 liters of water. This means beef production uses water and produces wastewater almost four times more than the production of chicken meat. In the instant food industry, a beef burger uses 1,000 liters of water to make while a soy burger consumes only 160 liters of water. At a time when the environment is in a vulnerable state and needs intensified conservation, products with a low water footprint are certainly a better alternative and earn more acceptance than products with a high water footprint. However, changing consumption behavior is a difficult matter for most people. What we recommend you do before buying any product is to consider whether the amount you’re buying can meet your need so that you won’t have to waste it after the purchase. Once you’ve purchased an item, think carefully whether you’ve used it for all it’s worth before discarding. This will help ease the water crisis in the country of manufacture and save the world’s water supply more than you know it...

THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA THE WATER OF LOVE FESTIVAL

You may have not heard that, aside from South- East Asian region, The Republic of Armenia also has water- splashing festival, with a pretty sweet name of Vardavar.

WATER DESTINATION

Vardavar is a festival which has been being passed on from generations to generations for many centuries, ever since the time when the Armenian did not have a religion. The aim of Vardavar is to commemorate Astghik, the goddess of water, beauty, love, and prosperity. According to the belief that Goddess Astghik had thoroughly sprinkled droplets of love from her rose on the land of Armenia, this festival is then called “Vardavar”, which means “The rose festival” (Vart means rose). As the word “Var” in Armenian is translated as rice, the festival is held in harvest season, marking the 98th day after Easter as a day to celebrate Vardavar festival (between 28th June- 1st October).

TOURIST GUIDE ARMENIA

In 2016, Vardavar festival will take place on the 3rd of July. If you keen on escaping the heat and enjoying some water fight in European atmosphere, Armenia is a destination you cannot miss. You will not only get to have fun in Vardavar festival, but you can also sightsee some ancient places dubbed as the oldest in the world, for example a 6,000-year-old wine factory, and lots of other historical and religious sites all over the country.

HOW TO GO Armenia shares its border with 4 other countries which are Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. However, due to the international conflicts, Armenia can be accessed only via Georgia and Iran. Travellers holding Thai passport can ask for On - arrival visa from the immigration control or at Yeravan Airport without having to fill any documents at the embassy.

Another long - held belief is that after the Genesis flood, Noah had ordered his 3 sons to splash water towards one another as a remembrance to the flooding incidence. Consequently, in Vardavar festival, the Armenian usually celebrate by giving roses or throwing rose petals, including gleefully splashing water at one another. It’s such a beloved festival for children and lots of tourists as it effectively helps alleviate the summer’s heat.

LULLING YOURSELF TO SLEEP WITH WATER SOUND By Catherine Songphatanayothin

Insomnia is a sleep disorder affecting many people today. According to the United States Census Bureau, over 30% of the US population live with this disorder and many are dependent upon medication to help them sleep. If you have trouble sleeping and want to treat the disorder without using drugs or chemicals, Dr. Orfeu Buxton, a neuroscientist and an expert on sleep from the Sleep Division at Harvard University, has a tip to share.

SOURCE

Statistics from the National Sleep Foundation

The secret treatment is using the sound of water to lull yourself to sleep. Research has found that different sounds, such as those of an engine, communication device or music, affect our brain waves and lead us into different states, including stress. But the natural sound of water — whether it’s a flowing stream, the sea waves or the rain — can lead us into a calm, relaxed state, not different from the effect of meditation. Now you see how magical water is. Not only is it important for the body, but it also offers the mind a positive energy. If you find it hard to sleep, try this for yourself. There are software programs of water sound therapy that you can download to your mobile phone or tablet. We suggest listening to the sound of gentle ocean waves or the pitter-patter of rain to help you sleep better.

Now, have a good night’s sleep!

STRONG AND POSITIVE MIND

THE FIRST STEP

In the past 5 years, there was one very popular reality television program in the United States called “My 600- lb Life”.

It is a true story of a group of Americans who suffered from chronic obesity and severe overweight conditions. What the world can see from the program was their daily struggling to do some simple things like waking up, getting out of bed, and making their way to the toilet. No matter how embarrassing it could be, these people were willing to disclose their personal lives, with the condition that if they could lose 20 kg. by themselves, a team of doctors specialized in obesity treatment would perform an operation and help them get back to and maintain a normal life.

“The first step to victory starts at ourselves.” Let’s begin the first steps together.

By watching this program, I am reminded with 2 facts that:

The reason behind this agreement is that, according to statistic, people who are dependent on others and express no sign of endeavor are likely to become overweight again within a year after the operation. This means the medical assistance would be completely useless.

1

Every step taken without our attempt could be others’ steps to the greatest victory. Hence, we must not overlook the extraordinary in our everyday simplicity.

2

Those around us are always ready to give us a hand. We just have to take the first step and show the world our attempt to deal with our problems.

The change of management structure and financial structure of the business related to the infrastructure The government agency will realize the advantage of freedom of infrastructure management. It is partly from the pressure by the financial institutions that support the project urging the rise in water prices to outgrow that of the inflation, which will help the infrastructure management to be able to plan ahead for its own investment.

The financial support from private sector

The utility of technology to increase capacity

The government’s reducing financial support due to inadequate income to cover the management cost will soon allow private sector to invest. However, investing in water distributing pipe is sensitive and remains a political issue especially in Europe continent. Therefore, the investment opportunity lies in the construction work, property owner, and management in water production, rather than being a water distributor to end-users.

The industrial sector will soon see how the water shortage crisis impacts its operation and then realize the need of reduction in water usage in the production process. This will allow the industrial sector to become interested in investing in technology related to water, especially those with worth return.

ASEAN STUDENTS’ UNIFORM ASEAN WATCH

It has been two full years since Thailand’s higher education institutions have altered their academic calendar to match with those of other ASEAN countries. (First semester: from June – October to August – December, second semester: from November– March to January - May) Nevertheless, the Assembly of Faculty Senate Chairs of Thailand (AFCT) has ultimately reached a unanimous conclusion for member institutions of AFCT to bring back the old term timetable. Because the second semester covers the hottest seasons of the year and clashes with several long holidays in new academic schedule, this impedes the education and does not go well with Thai way of living. The dissimilarity in semester dates, though, does not diminish the charm of each country’s educational characteristic at all. In contrast, this difference even encourages the curiosity toward our neighbors’ educational system. One of the highlights is none other than the uniform. We can see many countries interestingly integrate their culture of national costume into student’s uniform. Given an example of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, all female students wear white shirt and necktie, but also wear traditional sarong instead of normal skirt. Myanmar is another nation that combines the traits of national costume into student’s uniform. While the guys wear white shirt with green sarong, the girls wear white local- style top with green sarong. One other country with a style so unique is Vietnam, where the girls’ uniform derives its pattern directly from the national costume, Ao dai, with long white dress and long trousers in matching color. For the uniforms of students in Muslim countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, they share same attributes, focusing on appropriate coverage with white long - sleeve shirt. Guys wear long trousers whereas girls wear long or anklelength polite - color skirt and white hijab.

CONCEPT OF FLOATING HOUSE INNOVATION IN THAILAND Thailand is no exception. Being regularly affected by the changing climate, the water level in the country goes as high as four meters. Houses, therefore, should be designed to be amphibious which can be located on the ground or floated over the water surface. It should also be able to moved by 6 to 10 people, built from local materials and in simple structure. Most importantly, it should be able to moved by a campervan.

ABOUT A BIZ

DRONE ABUSINESS SOARING

OPPORTUNITY

How awesome would it be if, while we are feeling hot and thirsty, we can just pass our orders via a smartphone and have an ice- cold beverage delivered to us right away by a tiny aerial vehicle! This business idea belongs to “Rakuten”, a leading Japanese E - Commerce company that has recently launched “Sora Raku”, or a navigated drone delivery service, in Japan.

Photo from: www.dogonews.com

Today, drone, an unmanned aircraft, is a new and popular business trend. Several major companies like Google, Amazon, and Walmart all funded in the development of navigated drone, hoping it will revolutionize the modern shopping experience for people of this generation. Similarly, Swiss, Singapore, and Australia Post are on their ways to utilize drone for parcel and mail delivery in remote areas.

NO.35

JULY 2016

ABOUT A BIZ

Even though the commercial use of drone is still in its infancy due to legal limitation, the attention towards drone still increases as it is regarded “The Flying Technology” that helps broaden the service boundary in various business, for example: a video camera drone is used to take a bird’s- eye view photo, used for land exploration, map making, investigation flight, or even used for agricultural purposes like finding lands, pesticide application, seeding, etc. Photo from: www.richardbarrow.com

In Thailand, drone is the hottest technology in video-photography business, namely news reporting, event or concert live broadcasting, presentation video production for wedding, hotel, and resort, etc. The service could cost from 5,000 THB up to over 20,000 THB, depending on the type of drone and the level of production. Photo from: gigaom.com

The higher popularity of drone results in “drone controller” becoming a new trendy job while drone training colleges rapidly becoming widespread. In China, a 2 - week drone training program could cost 8,000 CNY, or around 42,000 THB. Regarding salary, drone controller could receive around 5,000 CNY per month (approximately 26,500 THB).

Although this year the government has just passed a law regulating the registration of drone used for purposes other than a hobby, a major drone importing company like Phantom Thailand Ltd. does not think it will obstruct the expansion of drone market in Thailand, which has been rising by 30% per year. Thus, it comes as no surprise to witness new drone - related business in Thailand, such as “Drone Thai Insurance”, the drone insurance and drone controller registration service, “Drone Academy Thailand”, the institution of drone research and development of Thailand, as well as the growth of drone shops, which all reflect the hottest and most promising “soaring” business opportunity of the era.

HEALTH & SAFETY

This is certainly a thrill if the digging is a part of the treasure hunt. But it won’t be fun if the digging can cause a life and death situation. Take a recent leaked gasoline pipe incident – that caused fire – as a case study to prevent any possible accidents in the future.

While a group of workers were using an excavator to install underground water pipes, the excavator accidentally punctured a gasoline pipe. The puncture immediately caused fire and explosion, leaving five deaths and four injuries at the scene. Residents living within half- mile radius of the accident had to immediately evacuated for their own safety. The accident occurred because workers didn’t know the underground plan and the precise location of the gasoline pipe. Excavators worked in accordance with engineers’ plan that had inaccurately indicated the gasoline pipe was located on a spot where a tree – that had already been fell – was standing. Most importantly, workers did not follow the excavating process which an underground survey had to be conducted before the excavation work. Strict measures and careful working process will increase safety at work and makes the job more challenging. So where will we have to excavate tomorrow?

KNOWING

WHAT YOU ARE DIGGING! HOW TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT?

1. Carefully check the locations of underground infrastructure, for example, pipes and power lines, which will also be indicated in the working permit. 2. Thoroughly study the working process before starting a construction or excavation work. 3. Every “near misses” must be reported, for example, a finding of an underground pipe at an unexpected or unindicated spot. 4. Study the plan of different pipes of our construction project and prepare for any possible problems that may occur. 5. Make sure you are well equipped and well trained about the safety, before starting any excavation work above the spot where underground pipes are located.
