WATER Past, 4.0 Present and Future of Water Although Planet Earth has prepared plentiful freshwater sources for humans and animals, humankind has somehow been trapped in the cycle of water scarcity for thousands of years. When it comes to the evolution of water management, we can divide it into four periods — or versions, for a modern vernacular. These are:
WATER 1.0
INCEPTION OF WATER SYSTEMS
During the times of the Roman Empire, aqueducts were invented to bring millions of liters of water a day to Rome to meet the city’s increasing need.
WATER 2.0
CLEAN AND GERM-FREE TAP WATER
Adding chlorine and other chemicals into tap water to kill germs and prevent epidemics originated in Hamburg, Germany, in 1893.

COVER STORY
WATER 3.0
AGE OF WATER RECYCLING
In the late 19th century, England experimented with wastewater treatment before discharging water into natural water sources.
WATER 4.0
WATER MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Although we have fully entered the fourth period, water management mostly remains the responsibility of the government. Many have suggested that in the near future we should upgrade our water management to the next level, where water provision, maintenance of water sources and water management are the responsibility of water users and communities. This will be a more sustainable approach. If the water management is upgraded to a new version, we will soon see houses and buildings having containers to store rainwater on their roofs; orchards that use rainwater in place of tap water; and community wells replacing water distribution canals as the main sources of water. When that day comes, the government will no longer have to spend a large investment on costly and hardto-maintain public infrastructure.
The present time is the age of combining different water management innovations together, including desalination, rainmaking and potable water recycling, as well as campaigning for water saving and conservation, particularly in countries with limited freshwater sources such as Singapore and Israel.

The city is located in Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China, Dujiangyan is a home to two of the main tourist attractions that have been listed as the World Heritage: the first one is “Mount Qingcheng”, an origin of Taoism; the second one is “Dujiangyan Irrigation System”, a 2,270 - year - old ancient dam placed over Min River where Yangtze River begins.

In the past, while drought struck one side of the city separated by the mountain, another part of Dujiangyan always had to face with the problem of flooding. Li Bing, a ruler of the city, together with his son tunneled the mountain in order to drain the water from flooded area to arid area behind the mountain. He then constructed Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui) in the middle of the waterway to divide the water into two streams. The first one went naturally along its way while the second one went through the man made tunnel. Li Bing also built Feishayan Weir, blocking off sand and sediments from flowing along the river and entering the fields. Last but not least, he made Baopingkou Channel which controlled the portion of water streaming to Sichuan basin. The system resulted positively when there was water to use in dry season, and there was no longer flooding in rainy season. It has revived the area to become the significant breadbasket of China in later time. Dujiangyan Irrigation System not only reflects ancient Chinese’s intellect in water management, but it also has several interesting spots, e.g., Erwang Temple which was built to express gratitude towards Li Bing and his son, a wooden Couple’s Bridge hung by chains that could give you chill, and a tall watch - tower where the beautiful scenery nearby can be observed. These are must- see tourist sites for those who wish to indulge in aesthetic landscape while getting to learn one valuable piece of Chinese history.
HOW TO GO: fly from Bangkok to Shuangliu Airport, Chengdu. Set off from Chengdu to Dujiangyan with Qingcheng Mount line speed train. Get off at Dujiangyan station to see the dam. Get off at Qingcheng station to travel the mountain. Dujiangyan can also be access by bus leaving from Chengdu Railway Station Square, and west gate of Bus Depot.

DO YOU KNOW THAT…? Li Bing unintentionally found a way to tunnel the mountain while he was drinking tea. He poured hot tea into a cup placed outside in cold weather, making the tea cup broke into pieces. Li Bing adapted this principle by burning rocks that were base of the mountain in winter. When the burnt rocks collided with icy stream of Min River, they cracked and finally shattered. Then hundred thousand men took the rocks out of the way until the kilometer-long tunnel was eventually created.

LOSING WEIGHT
WITH THE POWER OF COLORS
There is no doubt everybody dreams of being in nice and lean shape. Nevertheless, the irritating problem to almost a half of the world’s population is that there are way too plenty of tasty food available!
That is because the color red will increase your appetite, intensely stimulating sympathetic nervous system and making you feel hungry (even though you are not!) Thus, this is why red color is often used in edible products, for example: as the color of soft drink cans, or as the main color of fast food chains.
And if you take a closer look, you will be astonished to realize that many among that mouthwatering stuff have something to do with red color!
An easy trick to help control your weight is to apply the colors that lessen an appetite, such as cool colors like light blue and cyan, to your table. This set of colors results in calm and relaxed nervous system, decreasing restlessness and irritability caused by not being able to consume your favorite dishes. Try change the color of tablecloth or plate mats into blue tone, and change orange-tone light bulbs into white and/or blue - tone light bulbs. It will effectively stop you from your uncontrollable craving of some yummy goodies.

It’s also a good idea to stay away from any red-colored restaurants, and go strolling around the park instead. You will not only be free from any tempting bites, but you will have a great opportunity to do some exercise as well.

INNOVATION WASTEWATER Treatment
Deteriorating environment combined with severe water shortage has inevitably become harder to handle. It isn’t a problem for a sector to handle, but needs cooperation from everyone. Wastewater treatment is one of the best solutions that can be applied in household and industrial levels.
The system will not only increase water volume but also treat the wastewater before being released. The treated water can also be used in many ways such as plants watering, cleaning the building exterior, or flushing system. Treated water can also be brought back for consumption as it has already been practiced in Singapore.

A new business trend that is catching fire around the world including Thailand is Pop- Up retailing, a kind of mobile business that moves around to different temporary locations (Pop- Up markets). The business may take the form of a Pop - Up store, which is a temporary showroom, or a “Business on Wheels,” which uses a vehicle to travel around and conduct business.
Instead of waiting around for customer visits, a Pop-up store has become a marketing tool for big brands around the world to get to customers. For example, H & M opened a Pop-up store on Scheveningen beach in The Hague, the Netherlands, while LINE has opened LINES Friends Pop - up Stores in many major cities, including Bangkok, Singapore, New York and Seoul, to allow LINE fans to easily buy its cute merchandise. Even DEAN & DELUCA, a famous chain of upscale food and grocery stores from New York, opened its first Pop-up café in Thailand last winter amid the nature of Khao Yai.

ABOUT A BIZ
As the mobile business model also offers new brands with small budgets the opportunity to burst onto the scene without having to set up a permanent shop, we have seen many cool ideas of business on wheels. These include fashion trucks selling new brands by small producers; photo buses, flower trucks, barber trucks, book trucks, pet care trucks as well as food trucks, which are very popular in Thailand at the moment. All of them use the business on wheels model to offer products and services to their target groups at their own convenient time and place.
This mobile business that takes place briefly has become a trend that can respond to the lifestyle of the new generation that prefers something unique and out of the ordinary. Moreover, it creates a sense of urgency, which can charmingly persuade the customers to instantly make a purchase before the pop- up store moves elsewhere.
As the consumers do not stay still, businesses cannot stay idle either. This is a business idea that takes your products right to where the customers are, making it hard for them to resist buying! SOURCES
