WATER RECLAIM TURNING WASTEWATER INTO CLEAN WATER

Major metropolises around the world have gone through numerous developments to become the cities they are today. Some cities were built on a damaged environment, such as deterioration of forested areas and natural water sources, which were a result of improper development. But with the collaboration between the public and private sectors, these cities have witnessed a revival of their environment and much better conditions in various aspects. 02

IS WATER MAGAZINE

One city that has been successful in treating water and creating concrete positive impacts in its surroundings is Stockholm, Sweden. The city has managed to clean up its polluted water sources and improve the city’s tap water and is now known as one city with the cleanest tap water in the world. Seoul, Republic of Korea, is another city that has achieved excellent success as it transformed the Cheonggyecheon Stream into a public recreational space that attracts visitors from around the world.

STOCKHOLM CASE STUDY FOR WATER RECLAMATION Stockholm is praised for some of the cleanest water sources in the world. They are so clean that people can swim and catch fish in the water safely. Meanwhile, the city’s tap water is of excellent quality and potable. Photo from:

However, before Stockholm became known as a clean water city, it had faced an issue of water scarcity due to the release of wastewater from communities and industrial plants. Many natural water sources were so polluted that they could not be consumed. The Swedish government implemented an array of programs to revive the country’s water sources, such as investing in infrastructure projects related to the environment, giving incentives to the private sector to be eco-friendly and issuing strict regulations to control pollution. For example, houses must be built at least 100 meters away from a river and all large companies have to install a water treatment facility and a water purification machine or else they may face suspension. Sweden’s highly effective water management system is operated by Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, which utilizes cutting-edge technology for water source management and water distribution, production of clean water and wastewater treatment before discharge into the sea. Any sewage sludge is used to make fertilizer for the agricultural sector while biogas from fertilizer production is used as energy for cars and public buses. 03

Today, many countries have adopted Sweden’s water management approaches to conserve their water sources and treat wastewater. In Thailand, the private sector has been engaged to develop a pilot lowcarbon city that will stimulate economic growth while solving environmental issues at the same time.

TOO LAZY TO WORK OUT? GO TAKE A SHOWER! We all know that if we want to be healthy, we need to exercise. But trying to get up and work out can be difficult for many people. The latest research by Loughborough University in the U.K. may bring cheers to people too lazy to work out. The research has found that taking a hot bath may bring good results similar to exercising. The objective of the research was to find out if increasing body temperature by 1ºC by passive heating, such as taking a hot baht, can lower blood sugar levels and burn calories. The sample included 14 males who biked for an hour and bathed in 40ºC water for an hour. The results were:

Cycling

burned more calories than taking a hot bath.

One hour of hot bath

burned as many calories as walking for half an hour.

Cycling and taking a hot bath

similarly lowered blood sugar levels. 08

In addition, in 2015 research from Finland supported the findings above by suggesting that frequent saunas can reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Research from the University of Oregon showed that regular hot baths can lower blood pressure.

Many of you may wonder how sitting idly in a hot bath can burn calories and lower blood pressure. Researchers have explained that a hot bath will increase body temperature and this passive heating will raise levels of nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates blood vessels and reduces blood pressure, thus improving blood circulation. This has implications for treating high blood pressure and improving peripheral circulation in people with type 2 diabetes.

However, don’t use a hot bath as an excuse for not exercising because sitting still in hot water can’t make your body strong. Exercising not only helps burn calories and lower blood pressure, but also strengthen muscles and improve the functioning of different organs while giving you a better body shape.

SOCIETY OF EYE CONTACT

Many years ago, there was a video clip going around on social media. Titled “Just Look Up,” it’s a story about a young man who says he still feel lonely despite having 422 friends on social media.

He said, “I speak to them every day. Yet, none of them really know me.” He tells us in the video: “When we open our computers and it’s our doors we shut.” According to psychological studies, looking down to stare at the smartphone all the time may be a sign of someone feeling discontented with their life and the relationships they have in real life with others. So, they need to constantly monitor movements in social media in order not to miss being part of “society.” Some people carefully write their stories or take pictures and videos of themselves to create a better “identity” online. This phenomenon has a term: phubbing. And the computers, smartphones and the internet are the main culprits. A phubbing society is one in which people lose the face-to-face social skills. Some 09

people get nervous when talking to those they’re not familiar with. They feel uncomfortable having an eye contact with the people they’re talking to, not knowing how to conduct themselves and what to talk about.

Prof. Dr. Wittaya Narkwatchara, a famous psychologist, has suggested not using a mobile phone, watching television or even reading a book while talking to someone because these behaviors mean we don’t value the person we’re having a conversation with, thus making it flat and discontinuous. Instead, But to be a charming look up from the screen to have person in real life isn’t an eye contact with the other as difficult as you may person to create emotional think. connection, nod when you agree with that person and say nice and pleasant things that your listener wants to hear.

STEPS OF GROWTH 25 Years East Water “Steps of Growth Continues to Improve for Sustainable Development

10

Established in 1992, Eastern Water Resources Development and Management Plc (or East Water) will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Today, East Water is determined to continue the initiations by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit to provide sustainable sources of water for the country and to work responsibly with the communities and society.

IS WATER MAGAZINE

SCOOP

During the period of more than two decades, East Water has been through significant events and experiences in water management in the East, with pride, impression, and valuable lessons learned from the communities, Royal Irrigation Department, and users. All of these have shaped East Water to grow sustainably and become the leader in water management as well as the turnkey provider today. An unforgettable incident was the drought crisis in 2005 when every reservoir became dry. Villagers didn’t have enough water for consumption while the industrial sector had to reduce the use of water. As a result, agricultural harvest became low and every sector in the country had to help each other to keep the country survive. The crisis was a wake up call for the water management in the country and also strengthening the foundation for East Water in water management for the East. As a result, a better network of water pipes was created to connect water sources in three Eastern provinces together. The company had been operating a business and coliving with the communities, conserving environment, sustaining the water resources for local communities, and to build sustainable economy for the country. 11

IS WATER MAGAZINE

Over the years, East Water has learned and taken up challenges, to meet the customers’ demands. East Water has discovered that our business has to cover all aspect which are economy, society and environment, from the beginning till the end. Communities, living along our network of 491.8km of water pipes delivering raw water, have good quality of life and enough quality water for consumption. Celebrating our 25th anniversary in October, East Water is building three model communities, living in the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the network line, under the “25th East Water… Steps of Growth” project, said Jirayut Rungsrithong, CEO of East Water.

SCOOP

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s speech: “If the King was water, I would be the forest that is loyal to the water. If the King builds reservoirs, I will build forest.” has reflected the interrelation between water and forest. East Water has proudly turned their majesties’ initiation into “Build Community Forest, Build Sustainable Living” by working with local networks in five bordering province in the East, to conserve the forest to sustain the important water sources of the East. At the same time, the company also worked with local communities to cherish local lifestyle, society, culture, and rituals. The pilot projects were 32-rai Ban Sampran community forest in Klong Takrao district of Chachoengsao and 70-rai Ban Nong Muang community forest in Wang Chan district of Rayong. Both are the water sources for Klong Si Yat and Prasae reservoirs, which are the largest in Chachoengsao and Rayong respectively. 12

SCOOP

Another model project, “Community Water Tap, Build People, Build Happiness” has been created to solve the problem of communities’ inaccessibility to clean water. The project is in line with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s Pracharat project which encourages public and private sectors to work together for the sake of people and to drive the country in a sustainable way. The company co-worked with Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to organize a workshop, “production control and sustaining the community water tap system” through “Fixed it Center” for the nine branches of Vocational Education Institution. The center is aimed to become the center to take care of and sustainably maintain

the water system in the communities. As “water” has reached the end, another challenge is deteriorating quality of the water. “Conserving Water and Conserving Forest” is another model project that changes wastewater into clean water. The process was to raise public awareness to conserve the water sources, build network to watch the quality of the water, build grease traps, and build water turbines based on Chaipattana Foundation.

13

IS WATER MAGAZINE

The next step for East Water is to look for new challenges and opportunities to be a part of the Asean Economic Community (AEC). Moreover, the government’s latest policy, Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), has urged East Water to improve and change the strategy to become “the leader of turnkey provider in water management of the country”. This new strategy is to strengthening the water infrastructure of the country in the future while maintaining the initiations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in mutually conserving the forest and water sources. 25th East Water Steps of Growth continues to improve for sustainable development.

Which strategy is good?

AVERAGING DOWN VS CUT LOSS All stock investors want to take profits from their investment and the time spent before

they cash in their stocks or what types of profits they’ve made short-, mid- or long-term profits will vary among individuals, depending on their strategies. A trader may make a profit of 5-10% from investing in a stock after he did his homework about the company’s business and the stock price increased. On the other hand, this trader may fail to make money in the same stock if its price fell after he made a buy decision. It is common that 14

IS WATER MAGAZINE

WATER STOCK

Source muegao.blogspot.com Khun jo of gule

investors and traders can analyze stocks wrongly, especially when investing in companies they believe would show profit turnarounds but they did not. Refusing to bail out and staying in a specific equity when the market is in a severe downtrend and the price of smalland big-cap stocks dropped can lead to a greater amount of loss or missing opportunities to make profits from other stocks.

Mistake from Cut Loss However, this is not a strategy you should employ lightly. If the price in the stock, in which you bought based on fundamental approach, falls and you cut loss after it continues to dive deeper. You would end up “buying a stock at a cheap price, but selling it even cheaper!” The value investor must thoroughly analyze equity and be sure that it offers a big enough discount to its intrinsic or fundamental value to allow some room for error in the estimation of value, and that when the price retreats further what they must do is averaging down, NOT cut loss.

Should I go for averaging down or cut loss? To answer this question, you should ask yourself first that “What factors do I use to buy a stock?” Did you make a buy decision because of signals from technical indicators or you use “value investing” (VI) strategy and believed you had bought an equity at a big discount to its intrinsic value? “Disciplined Investing is something that could help make successful investors and traders." Before you average down your stock that was bought it based on technical analysis, instead of placing a cut loss order, you need to keep in mind that no one can predict the market trend with 100% accuracy, especially in the Thai bourse, where there is some levels of price control. Therefore, “cut loss” and “let profits run” are important strategies that will help technical investors gain profits if they buy at the right timing and stick to disciplined investing. You must always remember that once the stock that you invested based on technical analysis has fallen below the cut loss point, you must choose to cut loss, never average down the stock. 15

On the contrary, value investors look for stocks that trade for less than their intrinsic values and, based on technical analysis point of view, the stocks could be in for a downtrend or sideways action. So, it is normal that you will see a particular stock continues to slide after a value investor bought it. It is also natural that value investors will buy stocks that have strong fundamentals but they will be patient while waiting for the price drop to rebound.

When buying stocks at the wrong time, there are many people who rely on technical analysis when investing in stocks and regard themselves as value investors do not cut loss and continue to hold onto their equities despite knowing that the capital put in the stock is already higher than its intrinsic value.

It is very difficult that the value stocks will rebound as quickly as those selected by technical investors. The value stocks take time before they are ripe for profit-taking. Many investors failed to wait and sold the shares instead of buying more after the price declined. They claimed they made the cut loss decision because they had ‘discipline’.

Therefore, investors must plan their trading strategies before making every investment decision. They must ask themselves what they will do if their plans go wrong or what further step should be taken if the plans go smoothly, just like the motto goes,

“ There is risk associated with investment, investors should carefully study information before making the decision to invest. ”

Although the THEOS-1 has been set to end its mission, the Thai government has maintained the satellite until the THEOS-2 is ready. With a budget of 7.8 billion baht, the THEOS-2 is expected to be ready in 2021 to improve the country in at least six dimensions; which are agriculture; water management; natural disaster; environment, climate, natural resources, society; security; and economics.

THEOS-2 will also be developed to perform with higher performance. The new satellite will be equipped with higher-resolution cameras and a new application that conveys the real-time information. This means the new generation prefers a car that fits their lifestyle and needs over a fancy car with performance too high than required, and cost effectiveness over brand. Most importantly, people in this generation prefer to rent or purchase by instalment on a monthly basis than owning it outright. They don’t care if they get to own it in the end. This trend isn’t booming just among the new

generation but has extended to the corporate world in which organizations are increasingly using car rental service, which offers many advantages over a purchase. For example, it lowers financial burden because a company doesn’t need to spend a large sum of money buying cars, therefore allowing it to have more cash for other investments while also saving money on car maintenance and repair, and management of old cars.

When all roads lead to car rental, for several years we have seen the growth and shift in the car rental business, both for new and old service providers. Even for major players like AVIS and Budget, the focus has shifted from travelers and short-term rental to organizations, companies and highlevel executives and one-year rental at minimum. Additional services to attract customers include rental with the chauffeur, repair and maintenance, and fleet management. Different kinds of vehicles are available, from sedan to pickup truck, MPV, 4WD and van, to serve every need, be it for travel or business, and both for individual and corporate clients.

It’s clear that oxygen is a most important and the lack of oxygen for only two minutes can be the cause of death. Remember a recent incident when five people died in a wastewater treatment pond in a factory? The tragedy started when a student fell into the pond and fainted, the rest of the staff went down to the same pond to help, resulting in all died from the chemical smell and suffocation. Let’s see how it happened. HEALTH & SAFETY

THAI INAUSPICIOUS DAYS YOU NEED TO KNOW " No house-warming on Saturday, cremation on Friday, topknot cutting on Tuesday, wedding on Wednesday”

The aforementioned days and their corresponding activities have long been deemed inauspicious in Thai culture. So, what’s the story behind this belief? In this issue, we have the answer for you, which alludes to Thai astrology.

SAT

House-warming on Saturday

Saturday is considered a tiring day, a day of misery, because Saturn is a planet of misfortune according to Thai astrology. Ancient Thais prohibited conducting any ceremony related to buildings and construction on Saturday, such as the groundbreaking and other similar ceremonies, a ceremony to unveil a building sign or open business, and house warming.

TUE Cremation on Friday

FRI

According to ancient belief, the word “Friday” in Thai (“suk”) is a homophone of “happiness” (“suk”). When granting happiness to the dead, all the misery is left with the living or the person conducting the granting. Another reason is Venus, which is connected to Friday, is a planet of festivity, sociability and love, the opposite of misery and gloominess. So, ancient people prohibited having a cremation ceremony on Friday. There’s even an old saying about this: “phao phee wan suk hai thuk khon yung” or “cremating the dead on Friday brings misery to the living.” 25

WED Topknot cutting on Tuesday

Tuesday is a powerful day. Ancient people believed it was a perfect day for the first day of war or any activity that required strength and decisiveness. So, the day is not for ceremonies aimed at bringing peace, happiness and fortune, such as topknot cutting for children, housewarming and wedding. They believed conducting these ceremonies on Tuesday would bring conflict or bad accidents in the future.

Wedding on Wednesday

Mercury is a planet of uncertainty. That’s why ancient people did not prefer conducting a wedding ceremony on Wednesday, believing it would cause the bride and groom to waver in their love, which may lead to infidelity and divorce.
