Nu we alweer ruim 3 jaar in de Costa Blanca Noord wonen, kennen we intussen de pareltjes om bijvoorbeeld uw keuken of sanitair uit te zoeken, maar ook de super toffe marktjes voor de accessoires met een verhaal. Styling in the broadest sense of the word: choice of materials and colors at the start of the (re)construction. A lot of attention is also paid to the exterior, so that the object fits into its environment and inside and outside become one as much as possible. Practicality and the right homely atmosphere are also taken into account, for example by mixing antiques with new so that your house does not become a showroom. Since 2008, this restaurant and equestrian center has delighted those who have wanted to enter the valleys of the Marina Alta, specifically the valley of Gata, a fantastic location that floods with sensations to those who visit it, with the majestic Montgó of distant and faithfu witness.

Creative and varied cuisine prepared from the highest quality offered by the sea, the valley and the garden. Traditional Mediterranean cuisine with the most representative flavors seasoned with avant-garde touches and constant evolution.

The market in Denia is a bustling hub of activity, with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and meats to fruits and vegetables, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. It is a feast for the senses, with the sights, sounds, and aromas of Spain’s rich culinary culture filling the air.

Tallez brothers

Our first stop was at the Tallez brothers’ stall, where we tasted some of the finest Pata Negra ham in the region. The ham was sliced paper-thin and had a rich, nutty flavor that melted in our mouths.

Ferry explained that Pata Negra ham is made from free-range acorn-fed pigs and is aged for at least two years, giving it a distinctive flavor and texture.

Pescadería Cofradía Next, we visited Pescadería Cofradía, a fishmonger specializing in local seafood. The display of fresh fish and shellfish was truly impressive, with everything from sea bream and sea bass to squid and octopus on offer. We selected some beautiful gamba roja, a type of red prawn that is highly prized in Spain for its sweet, delicate flavor. We also tried some fresh anchovies, which were grilled and served with a squeeze of lemon.

LA TOMATINA

La Tomatina is a spectacular festival that takes place in the town of Buñol, near Valencia. It is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of August and is one of the most famous and crazy festivals in Spain. Imagine thousands of participants throwing tomatoes at each other for an hour, resulting in a massive tomato fight. Hilarious, messy and oh-so-red.

At the Tomatina Festival it is a smart idea to not take your phone, and to wear swimming goggles to protect your eyes.

History

The origins of La Tomatina can be traced back to the mid-20th century. The festival started as a small event among friends in Buñol, who were involved in a fight that escalated into a tomato throwing battle. The following year, they returned to repeat the experience, and it became an annual tradition. The event continued to grow in popularity, and by the 1980s, it had become a significant tourist attraction.

Palo jabón

The festival begins with the “palo jabón,” a greased pole with a ham placed at the top. The aim is to climb the pole and retrieve the ham, which is considered the ultimate prize. Once the ham is retrieved, the signal is given, and the tomato fight begins. The participants, who are usually around 20,000, are divided into different zones, and trucks filled with tomatoes make their way through the streets, supplying the participants with ammunition. The tomato fight lasts for an hour, after which the participants are hosed down by the locals, and the streets are washed clean.

Fun for everyone

The event is not just about throwing tomatoes. The festival is a celebration of joy, fun, and unity. People from all over the world come together to participate in the event, and the atmosphere is infectious. It is an opportunity to let go of inhibitions,

be spontaneous, and enjoy life to the fullest. The festival brings people together, regardless of their background, culture, or nationality.

Controversial

Despite the popularity of La Tomatina, the event has been controversial in the past. Some have criticized the festival for being wasteful and promoting violence. Others have raised concerns about the safety of the participants, as tomatoes can cause injury, and the crowds can get unruly. To address these concerns, the authorities have put in place strict regulations to ensure the safety of the participants and minimize the environmental impact. For example, the tomatoes used are of a lower quality, and participants are not allowed to bring in their tomatoes. The event is also closely monitored by security personnel, and medical facilities are on standby.

COCKTAILS HEAVENLY SUMMER DRINKS

Spanish culture is infused with vivacity, temperament and energy, and its cocktails are no exception. They capture the essence of this vibrant way of life. With a focus on delicious cuisine, convivial company, and spirited freedom, it’s hardly surprising that Spanish cocktails are an outstanding representation of the rich culture. Whether you opt for a traditional sangria or a crisp Clara beer, the Spanish have a wealth of superb cocktails to offer. Cheers!

Admittedly, there are great international cocktails. But when in Spain you choose the real traditional classics to enjoy the authentic summer even more.

Sangria is the quintessential Spanish cocktail, and the word itself is a reference to blood due to the dark red colour of the wine. Traditionally, it features tempranillo wine, but you can make it with red, white, or even sparkling wine nowadays.

For a traditional sangria, this six-ingredient recipe cannot be beaten. It’s sweet, dry, and very fruity. The dryness comes from the red wine, while the sweetness is a mix of orange juice, brandy, and brown sugar. As for fruit, this recipe uses oranges and apples. Depending on the season, also toss in some peaches, nectarines, and strawberries.

Tinto de Verano, which means “summer red wine,” is a Spanish favourite, and a very fitting name for this vivacious refreshment. It’s very similar to sangria, except it’s lighter and less boozy.

For this classic, you’ll combine a medium-bodied red wine with fizzy lemonade and a bounty of fruit. Grapefruit, oranges, lemon, and lime are added in wedges, so be sure to wash the rinds. Let them soak up all that boozy deliciousness. This fizzy libation will go flat over time, so don’t prepare too far ahead, or your lively beverage will be flat upon serving.

Another outstanding Spanish summer cocktail is the kalimotxo. Also known as calimocho, this popular beverage is a blend of red wine and Coke. This may

sound like an odd pairing, but trust me, it works! All you’ll do is use equal parts of both ingredients and toss in a lemon wedge. It’s a great cocktail to memorize for when unexpected company arrives at your door. It’s also a nice alternative when you want a wine spritzer without all the work.

4. Agua de Valencia

If you’re serving a Spanish tortilla for brunch, continue the theme and serve a carafe of this cocktail. Agua de Valencia is like the Spanish version of a mimosa.

It calls for a sparkling touch of cava. Like other sparkling wines, cava ranges in sweetness, so be sure to look at the label. Ferry van Houten is a Dutch chef and owner of the culinary boutique retreat

‘Casa Coline’ in Javea. As a professional culinary journalist, I had the opportunity to accompany him on a culinary journey through Denia Mercy, where he took me to some of his favorite food stalls. The market in Denia is a bustling hub of activity, with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and meats to fruits and vegetables, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. It is a feast for the senses, with the sights, sounds, and aromas of Spain’s rich culinary culture filling the air.

Tallez brothers

Our first stop was at the Tallez brothers’ stall, where we tasted some of the finest Pata Negra ham in the region. The ham was sliced paper-thin and had a rich, nutty flavor that melted in our mouths. Ferry explained that Pata Negra ham is made from free-range acorn-fed pigs and is aged for at least two years, giving it a distinctive flavor and texture.

Pescadería Cofradía

Next, we visited Pescadería Cofradía, a fishmonger specializing in local seafood. The display of fresh fish and shellfish was truly impressive, with everything from sea bream and sea bass to squid and octopus on offer. We selected some beautiful gamba roja, a type of red prawn that is highly prized in Spain for its sweet, delicate flavor. We also tried some fresh anchovies, which were grilled and served with a squeeze of lemon.

Chef Ferry Van Houten has been trained by great Michelin chefs like Paul Bocuse***, Theo Nolet*, Henk Tuin* and Constant Fonk**. With his boutique retreat “Casa Coline”, Ferry wants to organize informal dinners, where fun, quality and surprise are the main objectives. His dj-booth is implemented in his kitchen.

Carnicería la Boina

Our next stop was Carnicería la Boina, a butcher specializing in Rubia Gallega beef. This breed of cattle is native to the Galicia region and is known for its marbled meat and intense flavor. Ferry selected a prime cut chuleton, which he planned to prepare for dinner that evening.

Hermanos Camps

We then visited Hermanos Camps, a stall selling a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The displays were a feast for the eyes, with brightly colored peppers, tomatoes, and oranges arranged in perfect rows. Ferry selected some fresh figs and avocados, which he planned to use in a dessert, and some local tomatoes for a salad.

La Latería

Our final stop was La Latería, a tapas bar that is famous for its anchoas de Cantabria. They are served on a tostado, including goats cheese and olives. We also tried some croquetas, which were filled with creamy cheese and ham, and some grilled octopus, which was tender and flavorful.

Food Passion

Throughout our visit, Ferry shared his passion for food and cooking, explaining how he had been inspired by the ingredients and flavors of the region. He spoke with the vendors, learning more about their products and techniques, and sharing his own knowledge and experience.

Culinary Spain

In conclusion, Denia Market is a true culinary gem, and Ferry van Houten’s passion and expertise made our visit a

truly memorable experience. I would highly recommend a visit to the market and a stay at Casa Coline to anyone looking to explore the rich culinary culture of Spain.

STAGE 8: DÉNIA TO XORRET DE CATÍ

LA VUELTA TOUR OF SPAIN VISITS COSTA BLANCA

On 2 September the 164.8km Stage 8 of the 2023 La Vuelta will be a challenging mountain course from Dénia to Xorret de Catí. The finish climb features steep sections of up to 18% and a slightly uphill last kilometer. The strongest teams will need to control the race, but an unexpected breakaway could also decide the victory. The race will take them from Dénia to Xorret de Catí, with the final climb presenting a particularly formidable challenge. The rider who conquers this climb first is likely to be the one who wins the stage.

Mountains are a part of La Vuelta’s DNA and will make the 2023 edition very exciting, yet again

La Vuelta a España

La Vuelta is one of the three major Grand Tour events in professional cycling, takes place between August and September each year and attracts some of the world’s elite cyclists. The race was first organised in 1935 by a local newspaper seeking to increase circulation. The race’s first edition saw 50 riders take on the 3,411km course over 14 stages. Since 1955 La Vuelta has been held annually.

The current format of the race consists of 21 day-long stages over a 23 or 24-day period, with two or three rest days. The rider with the lowest aggregate time across all stages is declared the winner and is awarded the coveted red jersey.

2 September: Denia

The 8th stage of the Tour of Spain, which takes place on 2 September, will run 164.8km from Dénia to Xorret de Catí. From the seaside on the Costa Blanca into the mountains of Sierra del Maigmó. The final climb is an irregular monster, in which strips of 18%, a descent and a slightly ascending final kilometer dance a bizarre flamenco.

at 7.8%. The steepest stretch is 18%. After rounding the top, a descent of 2km follows and the final kilometer rises slightly.

La Vuelta last visited the Xorret de Catí in 2017, when Rafal Majka, Julian Alaphilippe, and Jan Polanc rode to the finish line, with Alaphilippe eventually claiming victory.

Intense ride

The race is likely to be intense and challenging, with a 3rd category and a 1st category climb, and the strongest teams will have to control the race. However, a victorious escape cannot be ruled out entirely, given that many riders will have already lost a lot of time. The rider who conquers the demanding slopes of Xorret de Catí in first place is likely to be the one who wins the stage. The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2, and 1 seconds.

The final climb begins with a false flat that culminates in a grueling 5km climb with 9% average gradients. After the deceptively easy start, the climb continues for a small 2km in double digits. Only just below the top does the ascent level off slightly, although it still continues to increase

While Calpe is famous for being the destination of choice for many pro-cycling teams preparing for the season, Dénia and cycling is a less obvious combination. The last time that La Vuelta visited the Valencian beach town was in 1990, when the race went to Murcia and Silvio Martinello sprinted to triumph.

The 8th stage of La Vuelta promises to be a challenging and exciting event that will test the endurance and skill of the world’s elite cyclists.

The majority of tourists who go to watch the peloton ride by are from Spain. Specifically, 98% of visitors are nationals and travel an average of 130 kilometres to watch a stage of La Vuelta live. One out of every four tourists also spends the night in the locality they are visiting.

Rolf has gained his fame through exhibitions, work in commission, in various countries. He created his own sensational style of original, authentic, fine art.

The neighbourhood of Fornet de Altea welcomes hundreds of young people who are keen to participate in one of the most ancestral and anticipated events that are held to celebrate the arrival of the summer. This is a ceremony that the youngsters repeat year after year, during the Festival of St. John, in homage to the Celtic tradition of worshipping the fertility of their land. One of the most emotive moments of the celebration is when the tree reaches the square. Here everyone helps to get the trunk of the poplar into the earth.
