App Design for Tour Cyclists I am a distant cycling lover. This is an idea stemming from my personal interest, yet I found that there was a huge potential in the market for the need. As biking is becoming more popular with urban residents nowadays, better ways of bike tours are in demand. Here is a rough idea for an app to help people organize their tour plans.
TYPE: SOLO WORK DATE: 2016 DEC
Background Biking has become more and more popular in cities, it's good exercise, easier to park and efficient in rush hours. Bike tours in the same time has gained increased popularity. However, it is not always easy to make successful bike tours. The entrance standard can be high for new comers. To start with, choosing the equipment is hard enough, let alone knowing which route is available and accessible to your home. Besides, it can be dangerous to go alone, and finding good pals is quite a headache.

Reconstruction of an Industrial Area As the city expands, the original places for factories are no longer suitable for industry. Factories are moved to farther end of the city, leaving behind the rusted railways and cranes. These are memories of the city and they can be kept to tell a new story.
TYPE: SOLO WORK/GRADUATION DESIGN SITE: HARBIN, HEILONGJIANG, CHINA DATE: 2015 MARCH-JUNE TUTOR:GUANGBIN QU
Background r ive aR ghu n o S
The site is located in a northeastern city of China, Harbin. During the initial period of the new country's establishment, Harbin was one of the important industrial cities. However, as the economy develops, some of the factories are moved to further end of the city, leaving the industrial remains where it was. Here the site I'm dealing with used to be a riverside logistics area. The government plans to turn it into a tourist attraction where people can get a special experience when walking through the industrial relics and enjoying the river scene.

Concept Deduction
Entrance to the site According to the future plan of the area, there will be three avenues leading to the site, so they will be the potential entrance to the area. The southeast entrance connects the city directly to the bay, so it will be the most important entrance in the future.
Leading to the relics Among all the relics in the site, the three huge steel cranes are the most outstanding and attractive. Setting up squares around them can create interesting outdoor space. Starting from the main entrance, I designed a walking path leading to the attractions.
Adjusting the terrain The walking path goes with the topography of the land. By adjusting the terrain, I tried to make the slopes more visible and make the space more playful.
Historical texture There were originally several railways going through the site. In my design, I intended to keep some of the pattern as a memory of the history.
Master Plan
Total area: 19.16 ha. Green ratio: 53%
Break up large block
Maintain the unique
Seperate and emphasis
Connect and link up
As for the remaining relics in the site, including brick warehouses, rusted steel cranes and large commercial buildings, I used different strategies for each of them according to their seperate conditions. What I am trying to do is to strengthen their unique features while make it more available for modern services.
Flood Control System Dike line variation during last one hundred years
Landscape Sections
Some of the area is below the one-hundred-year flood level, therefore, it is important to build up a new effective flood control system. However, some of the remaining buildings and structures are under this level, so I decided to take the buildings as part of the control system.

New-constructed dam
121m is the one-hundred-year flood level. This line shows where it is for the present situation. It is clear that some of the buildings are standing below the 121m level.
This graph shows where the contour line will be after redesign. The darker one is the 122m contour, the other the 121m contour.
The highlighted blocks in this graph show where the new-constructed embarkment is. The rest of the terrain remains the same.
Building embarkment section
To protect the remaining buildings in the inner land, new buildings are built to serve as a dam. The first floor is open to the inner street as shops, the second floor provides a great river view. 121M LEVEL
Landscape embarkment section There is a 6-metre difference between the embarkment and the water surface, I designed a terrace to guide people towards the river. 121M LEVEL
Remained building embarkment section
The buildings can't be moved, so I lift up the outdoor space to create a dam and use vertical greening to soften the edge. 121M LEVEL
Tower Crane Square The tower crane is the spotlight in the whole area. It stands in the centre square where all kinds of interesting activities go on, such as the beer festival, outdoor musical performance and weekend open market. The surrounding pathway can provide seats for audience while creating an inward show space. In winter, the square can be turned into an ice-skating rink, so that it can be used for all seasons.

Sunken Plaza Section The original terrain tilts to the south and the elevated edge makes it possible to store water on rainy days as well as provide seats for people. The slight difference in height makes the space more playful and charming.

Ecological Park Design Exploring Soundscape Here I am exploring soundscape, trying to build up space with sound interactions. Sounds are everywhere yet always ignored. I want to drag people's attention back to the sounds around them and explore the world from a new perspect.
TYPE: CURRICULUMN WORK/ SOLO WORK SITE: QITAI RIVER CITY, HEILONGJIANG, CHINA DATE: 2013 MAY-JUNE TUTOR:XIAOGUANG LIU
Background The site is located at an estuary of Woken River in a new district of Qitai River City, eastern Heilongjiang. Being the main water source of the city, Woken River, a big tributary of Songhua River, is facing serious pollution issues due to heavy chemical industries along the banks. At the moment, the site is in the situation of a wetland waiting to be developed. Various ponds have been dugged up to raise fish. Piles of sand are dumped here and there by the sand mining ships. The internal eco-system has been destroyed and barely any green is left except a belt of trees in the northern part.

Section: Purification Process
The current pattern of the site is: the new Qitai River flows through the site in the north, and joins Woken River on the east. And a few ponds have been dugged up in the southern part. The first step to construct a new ecological framework is to restore the winding banks of the waterway and create new paths connecting the river and the ponds, integrating the water system. This new water system has a broadened outer scale and better ecological diversity. The ponds connected will be developed into new wetlands and serve as filters purifying the water from the city section by section. Each pond raise specific plants and carry out different functions. The biggest of the ponds is enlarged to be flood storage area and the main scenery spot. On the base of the natural terrain and water pattern, the park is divided into activity area, buffer area and ecology core area. Visitors can enjoy various choices of touring routes to experience the whole process and learn about nature laws.

Playing with Sounds People can tell where the sound comes from. Based on this, we can create a sound sense of space. When visitors come across the sound column woods, they catch a certain sound (could be a bird or a frog) drumping up and down, come and forth. When they enjoy the fun trying to capture the sounds, a calming atmosphere is also created.
