Have you ever been an art school student? Why do you draw?

Do you make your living by making illustrations? Still not, but from the last year I had more work as a graphic designer, so it’s going well.

Earlier I thought, drawing is just my hobby, I discovered 3 years ago, it is more, it is my passion. So i entered the university, and I will graduate this semester. But I make my illustrations outside school.

What do your classmates do now? Do you keep in touch? Do you collaborate? Do you have some kind of community? It was my big dream, but unfortunately we don’t communicate much, and I still search for people to make a small studio, or build nice projects together, because I really like to work in workshop and collaborate.

Name one favorite piece of your own work? What makes you proud of it? I loved making my first infographic, because I discovered, I can play with graphic design too. My favorite illustration is the one I am currently working on. It will be a series about Morbida, which is a secret world under the deep sea.

What sort of music dominates in your life? I choose music for my feelings, so my tastes differs. I like to listen Chemical Brothers, Huskey rescue, Angus Stone and classical music too...

Nice question, she likes my weird animals, and secret world, where I am sometimes living. And I just hope, one day she can be proud of me:)

What’s you attitude to copyrighting nowadays? Do you agree with a concept of totally free knowledge and information sharing? I don’t worry about copyrighting of my works, and if they inspire other people, it’s nice. And if somebody is not talented enough to make something original, and have to steal — poor guys...

Have ever been an art school student? Why do you draw? Yes, I’ve been studying visual communication in Budapest at MOME, MoholyNagy Uni Art and Design. I ‘ve started drawing when I was little child after in high school on the desk and it hasn’t stopped...

Your favorite piece of our own work? What makes you proud of it? My sketchbooks and my diploma work as well, it was a great coop with a screenwriter, film director guy. It was also a great raw material I could work with, I mean the screenplay. The result was a spacial book, kind of visual diary.

What do your classmates do now? Do you keep in touch? Do you collaborate? Do you have some kind of community? My classmates I guess they tried to seat in a position in some creative agencies, that’s what I’m trying to do now as well. We have some collaborations too, but rarely, I participate with a group of young artists, sometime, they’re called A.S.H. we exhibit mostly in pubs and clubs. Also I have some friends from Porto, one exactly, José Eduardo, we had a zine collaboration lately.

I’m a big fan of Jo Nesbo crime novels. I like thriller.

In Budapest György Pálfy was my former illustration teacher, during my time in Porto it was Rui Vitorino Santos and Julio Dolbeth. Great teachers!

Nowadays I keep looking Pieter Van Eenoge illustration and Tim Hussey art. But there are many more. Before that, was big inspiration Bora Akincitürk and Lavina Yelb paintings and drawings.

Pencil, ink, paintings, manual techniques mostly. Mixed up. Digital mixed too. I’m mixed up with it.

How do various restrictions influence your working process? (what’s more fun for you: working with strict brief from the client or making projects from the very beginning ?)

Often I have two projects, one I am working on is in the foreground, and the other is in the background, so I can never be lazy or bored. But when I am really tired of my work, I just walk my dog. It works well every time.

I like to build imaginary world. Combine things, humans, and animals, and show that can life be more interesting if i build it. To get myself started I watch pictures, check my sketches and drink a huge cup of latte.

It is more fun to work from the beginning, think of all the details, which I really like.

Whats you attitude to copyrighting nowadays? Do you agree with a concept of totally free knowledge and information sharing? We have a really big scale of platform to publish, but either they bring a lot of vulnerability and fake heads.

If I work on my projects, I can follow my feelings, but working for customers, is a different thing. I try to use my skills for their needs, and do my best.

Nowadays, I combine this two, and I really like it. I choose tools for project, I like aquaria, ink, acrylic, and vectors.

It is interesting, I’m little bit disappointed about my teachers, so I found my way by myself.

Are you into literature? What’s the last book you’ve read? A poem maybe? I read every day, lots of my inspiration came from books. I read last time Samantha Schweblin: Open sea, and Yann Martell: Life of Pi. I read a book before watching a movie, of course the book is nicer.

Have ever been an art school student? Why do you draw? I finished my Secondary School of Visual arts then I gained admission to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. There is no right answer why I draw.

My classmates deal with the same thing as me: we work with traditional graphic techniques. We get on well together, sometimes we collaborate with each other, but mostly we go to the pub and just feel good.

I had really nice teachers in Secondary Art school, who helped me, and now they still help me. I often meet two of them.

Your favorite piece of our own work? What makes you proud of it? I don’t have a favourite one, I like all of them. (especially my GIFs)

Are you into literature? What’s the last book you’ve read? A poem maybe? I like reading, especially biographical books.

What sort of music dominate in your life? It depends on my mood, now I listen to of British acoustic music a lot.

When I’m working with traditional tools, I feel more artistic. My digital works are much more illustrative. I think this duality is fine, it creates a sense of balance in me.

Few words about you tools: what’s your favorite technique? Traditional or digital drawing? I find delicacy in both. My favorite traditional technique is lino cut, but I’d like to try others, like serigraphy.

What does your mom thinks about your pictures? «My little girl, you’re a bit insane.» :) She likes my works.

Whats you attitude to copyrighting nowadays? Do you agree with a concept of totally free knowledge and information sharing?

I agree with this opinion, because my blog is a place of free knowledge and information sharing, too.

I can’t get into similar situations, because the college where I live is an endless source of inspiration.

Better from the beginning, I like all the process, especially from the beginning, the brainstorms. The most fun is to do it on my own way, my own odds.

It’s just comes from inside, somewhere. Also, inspiriting my daily life, it can start my fantasy up too. Or when I search on the web and find some awesome stuff I feel like to do something right that time. :)

Do make your living by making illustrations? No, I don’t, because only few people know about my art.

How do various restrictions influences your working process? (what’s more fun for you: working with strict brief from client or making projects from the very beginning ?)

Where does the roots of your inspiration lies? What do you do for get yourself started? In the college. When I can be with my friends, because we have a similar mentality. I usually work spontaneously.

I can find advantages and disadvantages in both sides. But I prefer it when i get free hand, of course.

First of all my name is Endre Nandor Toth, artist name, Ten. I passed my degree as an economist and then I worked in a multi company. Im started shooting pictures 4 years ago, than I taught myself and I became a professional 2 years ago. I don’t follow the conventions and traditions, instead Im walking on my way. Im very open-minded and like experimenting with different technics and meanwhile I gain new experiences and expand my knowledge. My aim with my pictures is to stop people for a minute and thrill them out of their ordinary days.

of importance in my life. I graduated the course of illustration in the British School of Art and Design. Needless to say we were incredibly lucky that our tutor was the big guy in illustration – Viktor Melamed. It is actually difficult to point the most favorite illustrator as each of them has got something to inspire and learn. The list of the influential illustrators can be very long, that’s why I mention just a part: Lorenzo Matotti,Rald Steadman, Artem Krepky, Nata Metlukh, Riccardo Guasco, brilliant ghostshrimp, Melamed for sure, Shaun Tan, Alexander Kostenko, Sam Vanallemersch, Jose Antonio Evora, Raul Arias. It goes without saying that the key to our inspirations is our surroundings – the clothes pleats, the spot from coffee, child’s spontaneity, bad hairstyle, calligraphy, the spread porridge all over the plate. I like diverse materials but ironically I utilize mostly Photoshop.

er name is Alina. That is interesting. Actually, I always wanted to date the girl with such name. You know, it’s like from Den Harrow’s foreign pop-singer : “Oh, Alina!”, not that it’s worth telling — one should listen to. Sometimes we meet up right during the lunch break — Alina works in the neighbor office to mine, that’s why it’s just enough for us to exchange massages in Icq one hour in advance and the whole lunch is ours. We go outside and head to supermarket. I buy ice-cream for Alina, and can of coke for myself. Then we walk, talk. It’s good to live. Alina has blue eyes and regular featured mouth. I like looking at her, when she talks about one thing to another. She could not fall asleep for a while yesterday, — it happens, she complains, but I’m just looking at her moving lips. She winks at me sometime, for no particular reason. What’s up? — I’m raising my eyebrows wonderingly. (Once she mentioned that she liked the way I raised my eyebrows). It’s the spring outside, great. Nights, if she is busy or, let’s say, spends time with her girl-friends in sushi-terra, I turn the player on and listen to Den Harrow. The one with “Oh, Alina!” Oh, Alina, — I sing alone. Then it’s becoming interesting, what this Den Harrow is actually singing about. In such moments, if she is not busy and not with her girl-friends in sushi-terra, I’m dialing her home number. What do you think? — I’m asking.

Cultural life in Budapest is very active , there are more than 100 galleries, and about 200 exhibition places. The political and financial tensions bloom up and motivate contemporary artists. My ex-classmates’ activity isn’t homogeneous, but a part of them are in the art scene, and this is very important, because the first few years after the university are of major importance. It is important for me, to keep in touch with my classmates, who are active painters. I need vocational discourses. I have got a new project, on which I work regularly with Viktoria Traub, who is an animation film director. She’s replying at once: what do you mean? It’s about you, about us, about her, about oneself. I’m raising my eyebrows wonderingly — pity she doesn’t see it. Will we meet tomorrow? — I’m asking. Sure, — she’s replying easily. I bought Den Harrow’s cassette last year in Croatia, where we went with her for vacation. I bought this cassette and something else, I don’t remember. I didn’t like it much. The same with Croatia itself. I remember, I’d bought it soon after arrival and kept listening to it, as I’d got myself fill. But she spent nights quite fun over there, and even I, by the way, got involved couple of times. This year we hardly go somewhere — it’s spring: it doesn’t make sense to leave somewhere. Everything is here, everything is nearby. Ah, these blue eyes — such a dream! There are seven things and “Oh, Alina!” — on Den Harrow’s cassette. “Oh, Alina!” — it’s so called hit, that’s why there are radio-version and twelve inch version specially for djs, and that one is f.. cool. And I just keep listening, singing along. Ah, these blue eyes — such a dream! (twelve inch version for eight minutes, and radio-version — just three and over, but similar, right?) Theoretically, if twelve inch version is played three times, plus the time for revising, plus radio-version (couple of times, why not?), then evening may well be filled. You have it done at the same time precisely when she is with girl-friends at sushi-terra. One would think that I’m bored, but I wouldn’t say so — Den

Harrow is full of surprises. And she needs to go out from time to time. The work affects, and the lack of free time as well, and this Japanese cuisine. I don’t understand the latter, although tried couple of times. In Croatia (have I mentioned it yet?) Streets were clean and cold in Croatia. Although streets were rather crowded, they still were clean and cold. I started guessing about that but then let things go hang: why would I care — let them be clean and cold. Ah, these blue eyes — this is crucial. This is, as they say, the whole point. Sometime I walk through the empty street, Den Harrow is on, looking around — the heart fills with joy — she is somewhere there, my thoughts are. And she is thinking about me at the same time. Oh, Alina — I sing alone. I said to her once: Listen, it’s rather bad that I didn’t meet you before, let’s say, at school, so much time has been wasted, eh. Sweetheart, — she smiled and held my hand. I remember everything changed and in that exact moment I noticed her mouth. It’s really beautiful, so rare on earth, that’s what I think. And these blue eyes — such a dream! She prefers sporty style, and I’m all my way nutty. Like Den Harrow. He is in the same jacket and his tie looks like mine on the cassette insert — such a character, one may think. As for his shoes — I haven’t got clue, his insert image is just waist-high, while I rub couple of times with a brush before the lunch break and stamp heels. Lovely sight. Lovely sight, — she is saying, when we meet. I’m just raising my eyebrows wonderingly in reply. What’s up? — I’m saying. I don’t smoke, she smokes. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I think this is the result of work, the lack of free time and Japanese cuisine. By the way, Alina got stick to sushi in Croatia. Or on sushi, I don’t know how to say. I didn’t go there, may be just couple of times, well, I’ve mentioned it before. The other time, it happens that we go for the break and I er.. in that sense, oops — step in mud. Am I not a looser? Alina is just grabbing the tissue and is about to help at once. And I’m just wondering. Lovely sight, — she’s saying, dusting mud. I’m raising my eyebrows and stamping with heel: oops! Pity, she doesn’t see it, I’m thinking, although no, and I understand the next moment: she does. Will we meet tomorrow? — I’m asking. Sure, — she is replying, smiling. Somebody chickens out to have love affair at work, but not us, no. Plus our offices are as a matter of principle different. She does her job, I do mine. So, our paths never cross. It’s me sometimes who crosses, but she never does. Well, I don’t do that in general, just if icq doesn’t connect before the lunch break. And

even so, I try to follow the next logic: her office is the next one, which means, she will not get lost. We plan to take mortgage the next year. One smart body advised us to do the following. You buy the flat, he says, not in fancy but in good place, make cosmetic alterations, then you let it on lease and it is significant that if to do it right in time, the sum of rent will cover the mortgage. But this is for the next year. It is spring now, and all nights are busy. I mean she is busy. I don’t know what you think about it, but mortgage seems to be the right thing to do. That’s what I think, and Alina would confirm if necessary, I’m sure. Well, this isn’t secret anyway. Frankly, couple of her acquaintances from sushi-terra does not mind to lease a flat from friends with mortgage. Or on mortgage, I don’t know how to say properly, this isn’t essential. They live, they pay, you know. And you just keep listening to Den Harrow. And if to be very open, mortgage — is the real thing to do: a good half of Croatia is following this trend. I’ll buy a new sound system with more considerable performance, with wood speakers (they are told to sound more powerful) by Pioneer and Den Harrow will be on max. Oh, Alina, — I will sing and look at her lips, and then ask: Well, what is he really singing about? About himself, about her, about us, about you, — she will smile. And I will raise my eyebrows wonderingly — she really likes it. So, that’s the spring, that’s it, — I’ll say.

The copter is howling heavily. We’re flying close to the ground (or what the hell do they call it there?), almost leaking the floor with our steel paunch. 40 minutes till the dawn, and when it comes, suddenly, a jolly circus will show up in front of my eyes again. Dead bodies are everywhere, spread all over here an there and the funny thing is that some of them still have not lost the ability to walk! And not even walk. Perhaps they are not so much dead even. Perhaps I just took someones 12—fold binoculars and look through it backwards. Everything is possible. I can see our fellas now: fragments of unicorns, diamond dust, platinum scales, huge chunks of monkey, coffee mugs, water color stains, dry and erratic strokes of acrylic, blue dog hair, sweet girlish swirls, ink spots, curly clouds—butterflies, roller—skating bearings, rails, ties, yellow pieces of sticky paper (huge amount of that one), maccarone, managers swith shaking heads, chainsaw and some muffins for desert. — Hey! Where is my fluffy polecat, goddam it! Where did this son of a beach gone? — Don’t worry, he must be gone to the WC and will be back soon. Do you want to talk a bit while he’s gone? — No, I don’t. Let’s play instead! The quiz, for instance. I will be the one who asks questions. And show me your sketch book for Christ’s sake. You are always scrubbing something. Dawn. Bright sun. Better from the beginning, I like all the process, especially from the beginning, the brainstorms. The funniest is to do it on my own way, my own odds.

It’s just comes from inside, somewhere. Also, inspiration is my daily life, it can start my fantasy up too. Or when I search on the web and find some awesome stuff I feel like to do something right at that time. :)

Do you make your living by making illustrations? A few years ago I would say that I was a lawyer. The fact is, I am a lawyer and I worked as a lawyer and was not even thinking about anything else. But the life has given me a wonderful chance to change everything and go back to what I loved in childhood - drawing. Now I am a freelance illustrator.

A few words about your tools: what’s your favorite technique? Traditional or digital drawing? Tools in each case are determined by the task. Usually I mix hand drawing with digital one and finally put it together in Photoshop. And, in general, I love to discover new techniques and expand my own opportunities. This happened with plasticine, which still attracts me with its capabilities after the “Contemporary Bestiary”.

Have you ever been an Art School student? Why do you draw? Last year I graduated from the British Design School.

Do you feel like an artist or illustrator? Does it make any difference to you? I consider myself as an Illustrator. I am not interested simply to express myself in nice pictures, it is far more interesting to tell stories. And, still, it is much more fun to invent a story and development of this story, as it usually happens with books and comics.

Let’s say that when a client knows exactly what he wants (a specific technique, or simply selects images from my portfolio she wants the result to look like) this greatly speeds up the process. As for the colors and composition, here I believe client is the best illustrator to rely on. More trust and less control. Illustrators know what they are doing.

Name your favorite piece of your own work? What makes you proud of it?

Who is your favorite illustrator? Name couple of guys. As for me there is no such single name. Today I am inspired with works of one illustrator, tomorrow I will be willing to change the direction and fall under the charm of another one. The world is full of beautiful illustrators, we need to expand our horizons. To my mind, it is very important to be in the search, this is the only way we can improve ourselves.

I don’t think I have a piece like that. I am a sort of an unfulfilled perfectionist. When the picture is done I start to be a little upset and feel that I could have done something better or completely different. However, some of my pieces remind me of some wonderful periods of time or pleasant emotions. When I look at them I immediately feel well and I am absorbed by the pleasant memories. I love such works very much. One of this is my plasticine “Contemporary Bestiary”. I got a lot of fun working on it, despite the fact that it was the most complicated and laborintensive project of everything I have ever done. I discovered that I can play, I can play with graphic design too. My favorite illustration is the one I am currently working on. It will be series about Morbida, which is a secret world under the deep sea.

If I feel devastated, empty and can’t work, it means that it is the time to relax. This means that I give myself permission to relax and be lazy for some time - and not to hate myself for doing so (which is very important!). At this time, I just walk, read books, watch movies and meet with friends. As a rule, the reward from the rested brain is stunning - the creative impulse always comes and the desire to immediately begin to work with new energy and ideas.

Where does your inspiration has roots in? What do you do for get yourself started? I am inspired by everything that surrounds me in everyday life. View from the window, a сup of coffee with a cake, a good film or a new book, hot lavender bath. But of course the most inspirational thing is just a walk hand in hand with my husband.

Was there a person who formed your attitude to profession? I had really nice teachers in Secondary Art School, who helped me, and now they still support me. I often meet two of them.

A few words about your tools: what’s your favorite technique? Traditional or digital drawing? I find delicacy in both. My favorite traditional technique is lino cut, but I’d like to try others, like screen printing.

to all. Story of family, love, home, memories. One of my most used themes is my family, and my relationship with my family, who give me a steady background. I am constantly searching for my roots in the past, and for my place in the present. Employing the idea of permanence and decay. Recurring motifs in the pictures of the house, wood, timber and rope which were given a symbolic interpretation. I like to focus on the essence of things, on their actual message, which I strengthen by the fact that all of the wallpaper and the most of the handprinted graphic are created in black and white, without any background. I like the mysterious, surreal playful-

ness, specialty, awakening feelings in the viewer. The wallpaper is also decorative motifs inspired by events in my personal life.My goal was not only decorate, but create substantive content. Although to create a wallpaper one needs a structured pattern, the motifs used in the pattern can be anything. This kind of freedom was one of the main reasons I was so enthusiastic about it, and I will definitely use it as a medium for my personal messages later on. Do you make your living by making illustrations? Still not, but from the last year I had more work as a graphic designer, so it’s going well. Have you ever been an Art School student? Why do you draw? Earlier I thought, drawing is just my hobby, I discovered three years ago, it is more, it is my passion. So I entered the University, and I will graduate this semester. It was my big dream, but unfortunately we don’t communicate much, and I still search for people to make a small studio, or build nice projects together because I really like to work in workshop and collaborate. I choose tools for project, I like aquaria, ink, acrylic, and vectors. Do you feel like an artist or illustrator? Does it make any difference to you? If I work on my projects, I can follow my feelings, but working for customers is a different thing. I try to use my skills for their needs, and do my best. What does your mom think about your pictures? Nice question, she likes my weird animals, and secret world, where I happen to live sometimes. Do you make your living by making illustrations? I am a painter, I spend my days with paintings, and i think about painting. Recently I have started with a graphic way, but my main activity is in the gallery’s world: exhibition, competition, and selling to private collections. Have you ever been an art school student? Why do you draw? When I was a teenager, I could fascinate girls with my corel draw-knowledge. Later drawing became more important, because I realized, that drawing is a good way of understanding entity. After finishing graphic school, I studied at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, painting department. I finished it in 2008. I was the best in drawing. So I started to go deeper in this world. What do your classmates do now? Do you keep in touch? Do you collaborate? Do you have some kind of community? Cultural life in Budapest is very active , there are more than 100 galleries, and about 200 exhibition places. The political and financial tensions bloom up and motivate contemporary artists. My ex-classmates’ activity isn’t homogeneous, but a part of them are in the art scene, and this is very important, because the first few years after the university are of major importance. It is important for me, to keep in touch with my classmates, who are active painters. I need vocational discourses. I have got a new project, on which I work regularly with Viktoria Traub, who is an animation film director. Who is you mentor or teacher? Was there the person who formed your attitude to profession? András Halász was my teacher at the University, he inspired me to start fresh and free orientation. Because of that, I invited him to open my latest exhibition in winter. Who is your favorite illustrator? Name couple of guys. I like the form of design, which uses images of historical characters. For example, Garry Taxaly. And the other way, what is full of social critic impulse for example Antony Micallef, or Bast. As a general rule, I like the way which is represented by Steve Lasarides. Name one favorite piece of your own work? What makes you proud of it? Always the newest one. The title of my new work series is “Eat Your Heroes”. In this collection I’m concerned with the identity crisis of pop-icons. I paint Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other toy heroes also. These original figures aren’t simply happy and sweet, there is another way in the background: they are suggested to buying. The form and the content are opposite. This is the identity crisis. For example, the title picture “Eat Your Heroes”. In this picture there is a golem, who ate Mickey Mouse, and then he is shocked, because Mickey Mouse’ ears have grown on his head. Are you into literature? What’s the last book you’ve read? A poem maybe? Island by Robert Merle. The theme is about a team of shipwrecked, they try to live in an isolated Island. And they make a colony with a few native. The novel is about individuals eating each other.

What sort of music dominates in your life? When I was teenager I grew up with hard rock and free jazz: Miles Davis, Coltrane and Jimmy Hendrix. Later I widened my interest. In 2010 I found Terry Riley, and the minimal techno. Under the influence of this minimal music I tried to realize some of my absurd musical idea. Eventually it became experimental electronic music -- Nancy Brücke Experimental Video Music Group. A few words about your tools: what’s your favorite technique? Traditional or digital drawing? I use analog mixed technique: spray, egg-tempera, chalk, acrylic and industrial paining material. I mix the traditional materials with the other materials, which are used on the street. Do you feel yourself like an artist or illustrator? Does it make any difference to you? “Originally” I have got strong painter attitude, but in the last few years I’ve moved to the world of graphic. I am interested in using graphic and painting techniques together. Firstly, I am a fine artist, but lately my pictures are also used as illustrations. What does your mom think about your pictures? I was a child when I heard this question for the first time. This is the second time, it’s funny! I’m lucky, because my parents accept my decisions. What’s you attitude to copyrighting nowadays? Do you agree with a concept of totally free knowledge and information sharing? First, of all I am a fine artist, not an illustrator. I don’t make my living by illustration, and graphical work. But I know a story with Claude Monet. He was a very famous painter when he was invited to a banquet. A rich banker recognized him and asked to draw something. Monet drew a little bird on a napkin. banker liked the pictures and asked the price. Monet said his price, that was high. The banker wondered, he thought the price for a two-minutes-work. Monet answered, that the price is not for these two minutes, but for the 70 years before this drawing. Copyright reminded me this story. Everyone gеts stuck sometimes. I mean, in the middle of working process. Don’t we?) Do you have the method of avoiding or surviving this moments somehow? When I get stuck with my painting, I put it away and I find a new one. Ideally, this new problem answers the first question. When it is over, I clear my mind: listen to music a bit and surf in my fantasy. Where does your inspiration has roots in? what do you do to get yourself started? An answered problem brings a lot of new problems. Intellectual network begins with this simple formula. Pictures are connected to each other in a logical way. This is the series. The series of my paintings stay in a logical structure. The “roots” of my inspiration is the intellectuality, and the “fruit” of the inspiration is the sensuality. Similar duplicity typifies my painted characters, but they can’t absolve this. How do various restrictions influence your working process? (what’s more fun for you: working with strict brief from the client or making projects from the very beginning ?) I have two projects in progress. One is the Nancy Brücke project. In this project I work in team, we have to adjust to each other. It’s interesting for me, because Viktoria thinks in moving images, and I think in still images. It is opposite to painting when I’m on my own - here I have to cooperate. The gallery manager doesn’t influence what I paint, but the various galleries prefer different trends. I walk my own way, I feel I got freedom in my work as a painter.

Name your favorite piece of your own work? What makes you proud of it?

A few words about your tools: what’s your favorite technique? Traditional or digital drawing?

It happened 6 years ago, at Derevo theatre studio at Christmas eve. They have tradition to end the year with big celebration or show premier. One of its dancers decided to resign theatre temporarily and start up her own project at the neighbor studio. She called me to help her with decorations. The budget was zero. There were premier preparations going on at the next building: painting, sawing, printing banners with giant pictures. The atmosphere was very tense, people looked at us like at freaks. I came to join one week prior to the show without any idea. In the end we bought the box of painting tape for 20 euros and painted with it the whole scene space, floor and even hall entrance. And in addition we managed to transform everything into three-dimensional colorful graphics a la-Keith Haring by using several floodlights. The concept was that the performance was flexible to travel with around the world, and decorations were possible to settle every time in a different manner depending on the location, mood and weather conditions. The concept is the concept but that time we felt like we won the battle.

I don’t’ have my favorite technique, everything depends on task. The way that illustration works with book volume, different games with rhythms, space and tactile are more crucial things. For instance, the book “Whose are these?” for the Antony& Johnsons song. There is the song line on each page where the rhythm of graphics is visual support for the song. Half of the book – flipbook, if to look through quickly, then one gets small clip: the musician’s portrait is becoming alive, birds are flying, crystal tears are dropping ))

Where does your inspiration has roots in? what do you do to get yourself started? I find the “British” way is the most right for me. I research the context, collect all the information on the theme before creating the image.

Do you feel like an artist or illustrator? Does it make any difference to you? Yes, there is a difference. I think, in an amicable, an illustrator – is an artist who’s got something to say.

How various restrictions influence your working process? (what’s more fun for you: working with strict brief from the client or making projects from the very beginning?)

Everyone gеt’s stuck sometimes. I mean, in the middle of working process. Don’t we?) Do you have the method of avoiding or surviving these moments somehow? I’m not frightened by uncertainty, it happens – one needs to stay apart for a while and find the other activity.

What does your mom think about your pictures? My mom believes in me )

Yes, restrictions are very crucial, they help you to collect yourself.

Have you ever been an art school student? Why do you draw? Never did. Sometimes I feel the lack of academic skills, probably it would refine my style, and make a lot of things easier for me. But generally I do not miss it. I started drawing just for the sake of it, just for the love of the process. I draw because I cannot stop drawing. It still finds its ways without any formal training in arts. Though I still constantly learn a lot from other people and from their work. Learning and developing my style is a big part of the process for me too.

Do you make your living by making illustrations? No, never considered making pictures for money. Actually I even try to make it strictly for free. First of all because for me it’s impossible to earn decent living as illustrator. Secondary — I am much more into making stuff I love without money. It shapes the best projects: my customers have no means to push the project, but to make it interesting for both sides without motivating materially. I try to make best to return the favor of having the special demand.

Who is your mentor or teacher? Was there a person who formed your attitude to the profession? As I had not attended any art classes, there were no mentors for me. There are a lot of artists and illustrators that inspire me. I dig a lot of stuff, from medieval engravings to contemporary graffiti and tattoos. Nevertheless I would like to mention one man, his name is Victor Melamed, he teaches Illustration in British Higher School of Art&Design in Moscow. He was the person from whom I get the approach to illustration as a narrative, a story. This approach turns on a lot of things for me.

Who is your favorite illustrator? Name couple of guys. There are dozens, and number is growing. Literally dozens, I know what I am talking about because I collect stuff I like, folder it. I trace and study the work of my favorite artists. To name some that influence most on my current work. Edward Hopper, American artist who is my biggest inspiration for years. He made the great capture of what looks the still life scenes at the first glance, but explode with the suspense and narrative after the careful consideration. Mathew Borley aka Von, illustrator from London, who gave the digital twist to precise technique of graphite and pencil drawings. Sam Vanallemeersch, artist from Belgium who’s artistic life (sovchoz.be) fuels his commercial career (kolchoz.be) in such a harmonic way. Also, he’s so crazy talented, I can’t breathe. Artem Krepkij, illustrator from Ukraine, another talent I just can’t mess with. Man has some formal art training and uses it to make his stuff totally blasting. Alex Kanevsky, American glitch-painter, impresses me so much — it would be great if I do my thing at least 10% powerful like his.

Name your favorite piece of your own work? What makes you proud of it? I have no favorites. Fairly to say I like it all in a way — as I sincerely invested something to every one of my works, spent hours of my life messing with it. With some I get luckier. But nothing to be “proud of”, it’s just some pictures, come on. I like the stuff that makes to push myself, out of methods, media, tricks I usually rely on. So there are a lot of experiments, I am pleased with, but nothing I am completely OK with, so there is no way to have a destination. I am very aware that something you happy today with may seem just a joke a couple of years later.

Are you into literature? What’s the last book you’ve read? A poem maybe? Yes, literature, and poetry are very-very close to illustration. As I already told — illustration is about telling stories. So is music, actually. So is good dance :) That’s why the artist should try it all. The book I am reading now is some memories of the American helicopter pilot in Vietnam. One before was the memories of the member of Soviet expedition to Arctic. Nowadays I look forward to other’s people real life stories and experiences. But with my alltime-best I stick to classics. I like Anton Chehov, he is telling things full and touching while staying as simple and straight, as a storyteller can be. Love it so much. Considering a poem, I like Americans mostly, but they write way different stuff: Cummings, Crane, SandCortez berg, Xavier Brotigan, or even Bukowsky did nicely as a poet to me.

What sorts of music dominates in your life?

I stay true to hip-hop of its golden era. A lot of electronics. But now my mp3player is occupied with hardcore, specially chaotic hardcore. Just a perfect soundtrack to match my life in Moscow.

I mix pencil drawing and acrylics with digital. Actually, that’s a vastest field for experiment for me. I study how dynamic image is evolving through our modern “digitalized” perception. Its not traditional simple drawing or painting, nor it’s a pure glitch-art or CG. It’s as mixed-media as it can be.

What does your mom think about your pictures? Actually I started drawing under the influence of my father’s exercises in art. When he was about of my age, he did it as a hobby — landscapes, small portraits. Pencil, watercolors. He kept some art albums and exhibition catalogues at home. Renaissance painters, some mid 19th Russian classics. Nowadays I guess my parents have no special interest in visual arts. They don’t pay any special attention to my creative activity, but they are happy with any of my success. I draw some good stuff — they are glad to see my name in a magazine or website. I had proper breakfast or fast bicycle ride — they are glad for me too. They are always ready to join me at museum. As well as they enjoy talking over some TV-crap with me. I appreciate this approach a lot. That’s how it should be for me exactly. Art is nothing special. Go create if it is good for you.

Do you feel like an artist or illustrator? Does it make any difference to you? Usually artist is defined as the person whose work driven by his own concepts and vision, and the illustrator is more using his style to design some ideas that come from client. Though nowadays it’s hard to distinguish between artist and illustrator. Everybody is a bit of both, even if they do not position themselves so. Established “artists” design what is generally considered as art, talented “illustrators” tell stories artistically far beyond the simple need of their clients. If you define (as Groys did) true artist as the person, inventing new life-forms or ways of living — I am not that gifted or ambitious. I just strive to tell stories that bite me, in my own way. That makes me more of illustrator, I guess.

What’s you attitude to copyrighting nowadays? Do you agree with a concept of totally free knowledge and information sharing? When somebody uses some of my pics without not even mentioning the author — that upsets me a bit. I never ask for royalty, it’s just polite and common-sense to ask people when you use their stuff, yep? But fairly to say that’s not a big deal, shit happens all the time.

It is flowing naturally, or I just don’t do it. If I am asked to illustrate on the corporate world issues or on foreign exchange disaster — I just can’t. As I am not touched enough with this to express my view. You don’t have to have your point on everything, you have nothing to say — STFU. Or I may be stuck as I have nothing to add to what is done, and making one more pencil drawing of another gorgeous horse or lonely tree just doesn’t make sense to me. So the clue should be: staying within your subject, and keeping it fresh in ways of expression.

Where does your inspiration has roots in? What do you do for get yourself started? Anything can spin off a good idea. No secret methods, somehow I have plenty ideas to start of. I just have to choose the most touching me in the moment to get done. If it’s coming out blank, I just switch to next one. Usually I do not expect myself to do something radically nice, so I just do stuff, some comes out nice, most of it not. That’s just normal, things always are not working exactly as you plan them. Sometimes I redraw the same thing several times until I can pull it better the next time. Sometimes it makes a few shitty pieces to stop. Alright, better luck another day.

How various restrictions influence your working process? (what’s more fun for you: working with strict brief from the client or making projects from the very beginning?) Restrictions are usually fine with me, as they make my efforts more focused. Some restrictions are about pulling yourself out of comfort zone. Even if I like to keep my work planned, I used to work in time strains, or having no computer access, or any other lack of media or experience to rely on. I make the good lesson of all the stress. It was not necessarily good for the results of a particular project, but generally it built up my confidence, made me more flexible and made me prepare better next time, or just to not over-promise stuff.
