URBAN AUTOPSY
The continuing development of Johannesburg’s infrastructure has left it strewn with uprooted remains of several large trees. Often too heavy to remove, they lie silent in parks and on roadsides throughout the urban landscape. Created during 2010 / 2011 , the following series was inspired by these sculptural remains, often monolithic in size, strewn over the Johannesburg urban landscape. The initial process of photographic documentation tended to evoke the atmosphere of an autopsy. Through digital processing, the subject has the been sanitised and abstracted in portraying a grotesque and complex biomass, resembling studied human organs, looking microbial at times, cold red strokes to intimate the meditated cut of the surgical blade.
