GROWING PHILANTHROPY, BUILDING COMMUNITY It seems like just yesterday that we were scrambling to plan ECCF’s 20th anniversary celebration, and now we’re fast approaching our 25th. Although it won’t take place until 2022, we’re already thinking ahead to how we’ll celebrate that milestone. Feel free to contact ECCF if you’d like to help plan the festivities! We have plenty to keep us busy in the meantime. In 2019, we received a record $6.3 million in donations and distributed a remarkable $2,508,843 in grants, including $1,176,000 for the

to meet your philanthropic goals. ECCF offers many options for giving, including qualified charitable distributions. We had a record number of these donations from IRAs in 2019, and we hope to see even more in 2020. This option’s tax advantages make it a win not just for nonprofits, but for the donors as well. 2019 has also been a year of transition. We said goodbye to the Trustees who completed their terms: Suzanne Ashley, Lois Krause, Lee Mayer, Wayne Peters, and Mark Faanes. We’re incredibly grateful for their service, and we wish them well. We are, however, happy to welcome our new Trustees: Jeff Kowieski, John Satre, Sarah Stokes, R. Thomas Toy, and Amelia Daniels. We look forward to working with these wonderful people over the

Community Fund Unrestricted Fund Spotlight Dozens of nonprofits work hard to improve Eau Claire’s quality of life. How do you choose which one to support? With the Community Fund, you don’t have to! A gift to this fund helps ECCF fund grant applications that address our area’s most pressing needs, whatever they may be. Your donation to the Community Fund will support grants to organizations in all four ECCF giving categories: Create Culture, Form Futures, Give Green, and Offer Opportunities. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin Grantee Spotlight The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin (BBBSNW) is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Since 1972, BBBS has served hundreds of children, their families, and their volunteer mentors (affectionately known as ‘Bigs’) by helping them create life-changing friendships. Matches are made based on shared interests and attitudes in order to foster enduring relationships. Children matched in the BBBSNW programs report improved self-esteem, increased academic successes, and a better ability to avoid risky behaviors as compared to their non-mentored peers. Thanks to BBBS and its volunteers, young lives are changing for the better.
Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra Grantee Spotlight The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) is recognized as a chamber music organization fulfilling a dynamic role in the regional arts community. It provides area musicians with opportunities to perform at a professional level and enables audiences to enjoy a wide range of music. This is evidenced by an increasing audience base, the commitment of its musicians, and financial stability. ECCO’s mission is to advance a tradition of chamber music by providing a varied program of professional classical music performances in an intimate setting; through artistic excellence and educational outreach, it engages audiences, brings enjoyment to both performers and listeners, and builds community pride.

Roberta and Ken Vance Fund Unrestricted Fund Spotlight Roberta and Ken Vance have made an extraordinary impact on Eau Claire: In addition to owning a successful business, Ken Vance Motors, their community service has greatly improved the area’s quality of life. In particular, their award-winning collaboration on the Lowes Creek Watershed Project united public and private interests to protect the creek’s water quality from encroaching development. The Vances have also been extremely important to ECCF’s work. As Society of Founders members, their financial support helped the Foundation open its doors, and as members of the Legacy Society, they’ve ensured that their support will continue for years to come. In 2019, Roberta and Ken became fund holders as well. Their unrestricted Roberta and Ken Vance Fund addresses the community’s greatest needs by supporting ECCF’s annual grant cycle. “There are more needs in this community than one person could possibly imagine,” Ken had explained when their fund was established. “If you have a penchant for giving but don’t know where the money should go, unrestricted funds are a great way to let the experts guide your giving.” Although Ken recently passed away, his vision and generosity live on. Grant support from the Roberta and Ken Vance Fund will protect Eau Claire’s quality of life just as surely as the Vances protected the creek that flows past their business.

What is an Unrestricted Fund? The needs of our community are constantly changing, and this type of fund allows ECCF the most flexibility to allocate the grant dollars to the greatest needs of our community through the competitive grant process.

Jack and Carol Bartingale Fund Donor Advised Fund Spotlight As members of both the Society of Founders and the Legacy Society, Jack and Carol Bartingale have made invaluable contributions to ECCF. Carol is a founder and active member of the Women’s Giving Circle. Jack served on the ECCF Board of Trustees as well as the Investment Committee, which he chaired for five years. He also encouraged friends, colleagues, and financial advisors to support ECCF. In addition, the Bartingales started a Donor-Advised Fund to support local nonprofits, including the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic, Feed My People Food Bank, the Advancing Hope Fund, and The Community Table. When Jack recently passed away, his friends and family were able to carry on his legacy of philanthropy by donating to this fund in his name. Through their generosity, his positive impact on both ECCF and the community will live on.
What is a Memorial Fund? When a loved one passes away, it seems like a light goes out of the world. There’s a way to keep that light shining. Memorial Funds created in honor of lost friends, relatives, and colleagues provide perpetual support for the causes they cared about. Memorial Funds can be designated to specific nonprofits, general areas of interest (like art or the environment), or unrestricted to address the community’s greatest needs. No matter what you choose, a Memorial Fund will help your loved one’s light continue shining for years to come. Please contact ECCF if you’d like more information about how to start a Memorial Fund.

Dr. Michel and Cathy Sultan Fund Spotlight By Cathy Sultan
Designated Fund Spotlight My husband Michel was a dedicated physician. He believed in his role as caregiver, putting his patients in the forefront, even during the Lebanese civil war when he would brave the most dangerous circumstances to be at their side. During the twenty-five years he practiced in Eau Claire, he was always pleased when he had the possibility to treat patients from the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic because he believed that all people should have affordable and, when needed, free access to the best medical care possible. As a Gastroenterologist, he was constrained by his specialty to only treat specific problems. Setting up the Dr. Michel and Cathy Sultan Fund, which supports the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic, provided him the opportunity to help low-income Eau Claire residents receive muchneeded health care across a broader spectrum of medical specialties, both now and in the future.

Legacy Society The ECCF established the Legacy Society to recognize its members who have made provisions in their estate plans to provide a gift for the causes they care about the most. By including ECCF in your will, establishing a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust, or naming ECCF as beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you can join members of the Legacy Society as they look beyond the here and now to the future well–being of the greater Eau Claire area.
