Charles Graaskamp The 2016 Leadership Award was awarded posthumously to Charles Graaskamp. Charlie passed away in 2013, but his dedication to the Foundation has created a legacy that still endures. Charlie’s history with the Foundation is extensive. Charlie and his wife Joanne (a Founder and Lifetime member of the Women’s Giving Circle) joined the Society of Founders in 1998. Charlie began his time with the Board of Trustees in 2002 and continued his service as a Trustee until 2011. He held multiple positions on the BOT as

the Treasurer, Vice Chair, Chair, and Past Chair. Charlie was also a member of the Communications, Investment, Operations, Nominations, and Audit Committees. Charlie and Joanne established the Charles and Joanne Graaskamp Fund, a donor advised fund with a focus on literacy, in 2005. Thanks in great part to Charlie’s contributions, the Eau Claire Community Foundation has become a thriving source of support for local donors and nonprofits.
Certified for Excellence. Accountability. Impact. In 2012 the Eau Claire Community Foundation completed recertification of compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations®. The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations® accreditation program represents a community foundation’s commitment to go above and beyond the federal and state law requirements to demonstrate accountability and excellence to communities, policy makers, and the public.

Reflection & Vision
03
In 1997, a forward-thinking group of community leaders came together to establish the Eau Claire Community Foundation. They gave careful, thoughtful consideration to its purpose, mission, and vision. They understood the importance of a community foundation in furthering their vision of supporting local nonprofits forever. Their purpose was to help caring people give back in ways that benefit and strengthen the greater Eau Claire area. The Foundation is now entering its 20th year of fulfilling its mission: to offer donors opportunities to establish charitable legacies, to make grants, and to serve as a catalyst to address community needs. Its 20 years of service to the community proves that the founders were right. Their vision has allowed the Foundation to award over $1,270,000 in grants during this fiscal year, including over $920,000 to support the construction of the Confluence Arts Center. During the same period, the Foundation’s assets increased by just over $3,875,000, including $1,420,000 in Confluence donations. Your generosity has been instrumental in helping us achieve this phenomenal growth. We at the Foundation are grateful and proud of our legacy, and we work hard to leave it better than we found it. That’s an old-fashioned value, but it holds as true now as it did in 1997. The Foundation recently sent out a Donor Survey to our current Fund holders. This summer, our Board of Trustees will be focusing on a strategic plan for the future of the Foundation with guidance from the donors’ responses.

Theatre
“Read a Good Book, See a Great Play” and MacBook Pro
The Eau Claire Children’s Theatre (ECCT) is in its 28th season of providing quality theatrical and educational experiences for western Wisconsin residents of all ages. ECCT is one of the region’s largest community theatres; each year, over 300 community volunteers present a 16 show season seen by over 32,000 patrons. Through public performances, school matinees, and touring shows, ECCT provides opportunities for young people to experience live theatre as onstage performers and family audience members. Each season, audiences are treated to a variety of Broadway musicals and plays based on award-winning children’s literature, along with fundraisers like the annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ECCT must rely on a mix of sales profits and financial contributions to remain afloat. Only 60% of ECCT’s annual budget is raised through ticket sales; this is keeping in line with ECCT’s mission to keep ticket prices affordable for all. The rest must be raised through fundraisers, corporate sponsorships, private donations, and grant support. ECCT was honored to receive two grants from the Foundation in 2016. A MacBook Pro was purchased to help integrate sound and projection upgrades that were compatible with the new projector that was purchased with Foundation funds in 2015. In addition, ECCT staff and volunteers were excited to receive funding for the “Read a Good Book, See A Great Play” series that will provide free school matinee tickets to over 1000 local students. ECCT relies heavily on the community for volunteer and financial support. It invites you to check out a show this season and discover how you can help ECCT bring theatre magic to the Chippewa Valley. Girls on the Run of the Chippewa Valley “Heart & Sole “ Curriculum
GOTR Growth and other Curriculum Updates
Girls on the Run of the Chippewa Valley: It’s not just about running… The girls change into their running clothes and shoes, getting ready for another Girls on the Run (GOTR) night at their school. The coach whistles over the girls’ laughter and has them make a circle. The group is small and close, sitting knee to knee. The coach asks them, “Did you let the star within you shine this week?” This is one of the many question starters GOTR uses to help girls envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. GOTR inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. One parent of a GOTR girl observed, “It not only helped my daughter get moving; it got our whole family moving!” Over a period of 10 weeks, girls in 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the GOTR curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence, and celebrate all that makes them unique. As times change, so does the curriculum at GOTR. With the help of a grant from the Eau Claire Community Foundation this year, GOTR will be able to update its curriculum and continue its growth in the Chippewa Valley, empowering girls in the process. To learn more about Girls on the Run of the CV, you can visit their website at gotrchippewavalley.org.

Empowered Leadership Program for Hmong Youth
The Boy Scouts of America, Chippewa Valley Council provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. The Chippewa Valley Council serves over 5,000 youth throughout 10 counties in Northwestern Wisconsin. Over 1,800 youth in Eau Claire County participate in Scouting activities. Cub Scouting is designed for boys in grades 1-5, while Boy Scouting is designed for boys in grades 6-12. Participants learn self-reliance, moral values, and respect for others. They participate in activities with positive role models and build friendships with other boys their age. Scouting fosters self-esteem by placing each boy in a setting where his peers and mentors are encouraging him. This provides a sense of value and belonging as well as accountability and teamwork. The Empowered Leadership Program provides high-school age youth with the opportunity to explore their leadership potential while participating in activities focused on communication, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and team-building. Youth also participate in the high and low ropes course activities, which are designed to challenge participants mentally and physically as they participate in a number of different elements and challenges. Thanks to a grant from the Eau Claire Community Foundation, the Chippewa Valley Council is able to offer the Empowered Leadership Program to over 150 Hmong students in Eau Claire.

Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity 2016 Eau Claire Home Building
The vision of Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity (CVH4H) is simple but profound: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. With the support of ECCF and other generous donors, it’s providing quality, affordable housing to lower income families in need. CVH4H’s work provided more than just a home for one client; it changed her life. This is her story: “If I had to choose just one word for how CVH4H helped our family, it would be HOPE! Both my husband and I worked full time, but we faced daunting financial obstacles. Yet we were determined to pay our overwhelming medical debt. Meanwhile, I had filled out an application to CVH4H, and our family was chosen! It was a joy to work with so many selfless volunteers who gave freely to help us build our new “home of hope”! We felt so blessed by the love and help of so many volunteers and donors that we looked for ways to help others feel this same joy. When we were able, we helped other families build their homes of hope. I have also served as a member and chair of two CVH4H committees and shared my perspective on the CVH4H Board. It’s been nearly 20 years since we partnered with CVH4H. We’re still involved in various ways and enjoy seeing that same HOPE ignite in new partner families every year. HOPE! Pass it on!” To learn more about CVH4H, you can visit their website at cvh4h.org.

Bequests left via will or trust can help you reduce your estate taxes while supporting your community forever. Charitable Gift Annuities offer you stable, secure income while giving you an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift. Charitable Lead Trusts may enable you to transfer appreciating assets to family members tax-free while making gifts to your fund in the interim. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts offer you predictable income and an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift. They are invested and managed separately, and you avoid all capital gains tax on any appreciated assets you contribute to them. They also reduce your estate tax liability. Life Insurance allows you to make a significant charitable impact at very little cost. You can name your fund as a beneficiary and give later. You can also donate an existing policy and take an immediate tax deduction. Retirement Plans, when passed to an heir, are quickly depleted by taxation. Instead, you can name your fund at the Eau Claire Community Foundation as the beneficiary and avoid taxes, leave more to your family, and preserve your hard-earned assets for the good of your community. Real Estate, for many individuals, can be a logical donation for charitable giving. When working with your professional advisor and the Foundation, you can avoid capital gains and establish a fund that supports your philanthropic goals, forever. The Eau Claire Community Foundation does not offer legal advice to Individuals regarding their estate plans. We encourage donors considering a bequest to the Foundation to work with their legal and financial advisors.

Helen and Karl Andresen Family Endowment for Special Needs Eau Claire residents with disabilities now have even more opportunities to celebrate thanks to support from this Designated Named Fund. The Helen and Karl Andresen Family Endowment for Special Needs supports day scholarships to Helen’s House as well as an annual celebration in Helen’s memory. Helen’s House was named for Helen Andresen, who served as Executive Director of the Eau Claire Development and Training Center (now known as REACH, Inc.) It was opened in 2007 to offer day services for retirement age adults with disabilities. It features a high staff-to-client ratio in order to meet the needs of its residents, and it offers a variety of opportunities for physical, educational, and social enrichment. Both Helen and Karl had a strong and lasting impact on the Eau Claire community. Helen, who served for 14 years as the EC Development and Training Center’s Executive Director, was a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. Thanks to her pioneering work, REACH, Inc. continues to offer quality services to developmentally disabled residents of Eau Claire. Karl was described in his obituary as “professor, husband, father and grandfather, skier, canoer, soccer coach, Norwegian and American, political activist, firebrand [and] raconteur.” This man of many talents taught Political Science at UWEC for 32 years, inspiring hundreds of students, friends, and colleagues in the process. The Helen and Karl Andresen Family Endowment for Special Needs, established upon the death of Karl and Helen, will ensure that this extraordinary couple’s legacy of service to the community, especially to the community’s disabled residents, will continue far into the future. To donate in memory of the Andresens, visit eccommunityfoundation.org. To learn more about REACH, Inc., you can visit its website at reach-inc.org.

The Thurston "It's the little things" Family Fund (Amy E. Thurston and her parents, John R. Thurston and Helen Kroll Belongia)
It’s the “little things,” one’s special personal involvements and experiences, which make life worth living. As one gets old, these important “little things” are too often lost in the lonely shuffle. The Thurston Family Fund attempts to recognize this problem and address it. This Donor Advised Fund will be used to promote the psychological well-being of people ages 65 and up. It will focus on innovative programs that encourage new approaches to meeting the individual needs of elderly people, including addressing the isolation that many of them face. Special consideration will be given to programs designed to help pets remain with elderly owners and to programs created to help an elderly owner’s pet find a new home if necessary. The Fund may also support a variety of activities, including field trips, writing projects, art displays, group interactions, provision of comfort objects, and visits from therapy animals, that enhance the quality of life for elderly people. In addition, it will support nonprofit organizations that create innovative ways to identify and meet the needs of community elders. Through the work supported by the Thurston Family Fund, Chippewa Valley residents will have a multitude of new opportunities to find meaning, support, and dignity as they age. Donations to any fund can be made in honor or memory of your loved one. Visit eccommunityfoundation.org for more information.
What is a Donor-Advised Fund?
Donor Advised Funds allow individuals, families, and businesses to be fully involved in their philanthropy. Donors recommend grants to their favorite nonprofits, while the Foundation handles all the paperwork. These Funds offer many of the same benefits as a private foundation without the burden and cost. Plus, many of our fundholders appreciate the opportunity to tap into our knowledge of local issues. Donor Advised Funds are especially useful for donors who want to take a charitable deduction in one year and recommend distributions over several years. Beaver Creek Reserve Since its founding in 1947, Beaver Creek Reserve has provided a refuge for wildlife and nature lovers alike. The original 160 acre Youth Camp has grown into a 400 acre reserve that features diverse habitats and many species of flora and fauna. Visitors can also enjoy BCR’s educational resources, including the Wise Nature Center, the Citizen Science Center, and the Hobbs Observatory. Three new funds at the Foundation now support specific aspects of BCR’s operations. They are: Kate Lindsay Adventure Fund This fund is used to purchase or replace equipment, including kayaks, GPS units, and binoculars, that BCR visitors use on their adventures.
The Henke Acres Fund Established by the Henke family, this fund ensures the future of Henke Acres at BCR. It’s used to maintain the property, to add structures, and to fund programs and nature studies that occur on the Henke Acres land. The Citizen Science Center Fund The Citizen Science Center has a secure and stable future thanks to this fund, which is used to continue field surveys, add new programs, maintain necessary staff levels, and provide professional development. Because these funds are Agency Funds, gifts to them must be directed to Beaver Creek Reserve. To learn more or to donate, you can visit their website at beavercreekreserve.org.
The Lindsays are lovers of nature and want to share their passion with future generations.
What is an Agency Fund? Agency Endowment Funds allow charitable organizations to establish Endowment Funds within the Foundation rather than create and manage such a Fund themselves. This type of Fund generates a predictable stream of income while the rest of the investment grows into perpetuity. As a result, the nonprofit can use its earnings from the Fund to offset its operations forever.

During its first 15 years, the Children’s Legacy Luncheon has succeeded in its mission. The Luncheon has distributed over $65,000 in grants to projects that enhance the well-being of local children, and the Endowment Fund has grown to almost $100,000. Without each and every one of you, these achievements would not have been possible! 2016 was an especially important year for the Children’s Legacy Luncheon: It marked the Luncheon’s 15th and final year with the ECCF. This annual event honors people who make positive and long-lasting contributions to the lives of Chippewa Valley children. In recognition of their selfless philanthropy, up to six Honorees receive the “Outstanding Achievement Award” at each Children’s Legacy Luncheon. The Honorees recommend $500 grants from the Eau Claire Community Foundation to nonprofits of their choice. In 2016, the recommended grantees were the Indianhead Federated Library System, the Longfellow Puddle Jump Event, Tiny Tots, OutdoorMore, the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. The Luncheon also raised money for the Children’s Legacy Endowment Fund, which supports programs that serve children. The 2016 Endowment Fund grant recipient was the Children’s Museum of Eau Claire for “Playing Together in Harmony Park.” 2016’s milestone Luncheon celebrated the contributions of the 85 previous Outstanding Achievement Award Honorees as well as the six new ones. The Anniversary also gave ECCF the opportunity to thank the sponsors for their longstanding support. We are excited to announce that the Children’s Legacy Luncheon has found a new home with the Children’s Museum of Eau Claire. Please watch for information regarding the 2017 Children’s Legacy Luncheon from CMEC!

Field of interest fund
Children's Legacy Endowment As the Children’s Legacy Luncheon transitions to its new home with the CMEC, its positive impact on the lives of children will continue to be supported through the Children’s Legacy Endowment Fund. The Children’s Legacy Endowment Fund is a Field of Interest Fund that supports Eau Claire area children by providing annual grants to nonprofits that serve them. Each year a percentage from the Endowment Fund goes towards grants recommended by the ECCF’s Grants Committee because they support the Fund’s mission. You can increase the impact of this Fund, or any other non-agency fund at the Foundation, with a donation. A donation is also a great way to honor or remember someone important to you. For more information about how to donate, you can visit eccommunityfoundation.org
In the past five years, the Children’s Legacy Endowment Fund has made grants to: 2016: Children’s Museum of Eau Claire “Playing Together in Harmony Park” 2015: Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services “Digital Recording Equipment” 2014: Eau Claire Regional Arts Council “ARTmobile Summer Program” Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony “Concert to Honor Area Veterans” 2013: Eau Claire Children’s Theatre “Williams Sound Enhancement System for the Hard of Hearing” 2012: Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley: “Desktop Computers and Furniture”
What is a Field of Interest Fund? A Field of Interest Fund allows donors to allocate their contributions for the benefit of one or more areas of interest. These include, but are not limited to, education, health, social services, the arts, or preservation of resources. Field of Interest Funds are broad in scope, yet encompass many of the essential strengths and needs of the community.
2016 Children’s Legacy Endowment Grant Children’s Museum of Eau Claire “Playing Together in Harmony Park”
Together with the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony, the Children’s Museum of Eau Claire is implementing a brand new collaborative program titled “Playing Together in Harmony Park” which combines the science of sound with a love for music and ties it all together through a vibrant community partnership. Children who visit the experience can play on durable, larger-than-life instruments from “Harmony Park,” interact with touch displays to learn about instruments and the sounds they make, and discover the power of a symphony when the conductor pulls together each musician’s individual sound to create a community masterpiece. And of course, kids begin their journey to the exhibit by climbing up an interactive musical “piano staircase”! Involvement 12

Sharing Dignity - Women’s Health and Hygiene Initiative
Wounded Women’s Equine Therapy Program
Chippewa Valley Free Clinic (CVFC) lives its mission every day by providing quality, compassionate health care for individuals of the Chippewa Valley who have no reasonable health care alternative. CVFC’s “Sharing Dignity” program helps lift up women in need by assuring them access to health care, medications, and hygiene necessities. With the large need and CVFC’s limited capacity, this grant from the Women’s Giving Circle has been crucial to helping make this initiative a reality. Cathy Barkovich, the coordinator of the “Sharing Dignity” program, explained why its ability to supply impoverished women with personal hygiene products is crucial: “These items are so hard to ask for that many women go without or improvise.” She added, “Although you will most likely never meet any of those you’ve helped, take comfort in knowing that you are giving back someone their dignity.” Thanks to grants like this one, CVFC will continue meeting a hygiene need that’s frequently overlooked but vitally important to the health and dignity of the recipients. To learn more about CVFC, you can visit mycvfc.org.
Horses are superb at cultivating relationships. They deeply desire to connect. This unique connection with something so majestic, empowering, and non-judgmental seems “too good to be true” for the ladies in Trinity Equestrian Center’s Equine Assisted Therapy Group for Wounded Women. These ladies are victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. Trinity uses an experiential “learn by doing” model of therapy. Being in the presence of horses and working with them helps these ladies trust again. It helps them regain their selfconfidence, image, and esteem. Trinity helps them redefine their identity, their God-given purpose, and their vision of what their future holds. The ladies’ treatment team includes a Wisconsin Licensed Therapist, a Certified Equine Specialist, and the horses. The women completing the program leave with healthy boundaries, new skills to resolve conflicts, and an unshakable vision of their promising future. They are different women now: not victims, but survivors in every sense. The ladies of the Women’s Giving Circle are truly “Difference Makers.” Trinity Equetrian Center thanks them for their generosity. To learn more about Trinity Equestrian Center, visit trinity-ec.com.
Young Philanthropist Program The Young Philanthropist program is designed to assist individuals between the ages of 22 and 39 to become members of the WGC at a reduced rate. This gives more people in the community the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of women and children in the Eau Claire area today. To learn more about this program, visit eccommunityfoundation.org or contact the ECCF office.

New Fund A growing area of concern for our district is homelessness among our students. We have a growing population of kids who live in transient housing, are between homes, or are otherwise without access to a residence. This has presented an opportunity for our district’s Homelessness program to serve these students. As such, we are excited to announce the new Homeless Children and Youth Fund with our Foundation. This Fund specifically addresses the needs of our district kids in a homeless situation, assisting these kids with transportation, winter gear, simple school supplies, and more. The Homeless Children and Youth Fund was also the beneficiary of the 2016 Border Battle Golf Scramble for a second year in a row, this year raising over $30,000 in support of the Fund.

Strong Partnerships 2016 saw a variety of projects come to life thanks to our strong partnerships with several businesses in the community. Collaborating with the Xcel Energy Foundation resulted in grant funding to support the Blugold Beginnings program being added to another elementary school in our District. Our partnership with Mayo Clinic Health System brought forth generous funding for Chippewa Valley Montessori’s new playground. And our relationship with Scheels resulted in their generously supporting both the continuing tradition of the 5th Grade Track Meet and a large portion of the funding needed for the Montessori playground. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. Thank you for partnering with us, for supporting Eau Claire’s students, and for all that you’ve made possible in 2016! Warmly,
Sarah C. French Executive Director

2016 Golden Apple Impact
J. Murphy STEM Scholarship
The Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation hosted its inaugural annual Golden Apple Awards banquet in the fall of the 2015-16 school year. The ceremony celebrated one recipient from each of the 20 schools in the Eau Claire Area School District. These honorees were selected by their colleagues to receive unrestricted grant funding to use in their schools or classrooms, all sponsored by generous businesses in the Chippewa Valley.
The Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation is thrilled to announce the establishment of the J. Murphy STEM Scholarship, new in the 2016-17 school year. The scholarship is founded by the generosity of an anonymous donor with family roots in the community and with an interest in helping students pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). Beginning with the 2016-17 academic year, one applicant will be selected annually to receive a $10,000 scholarship to apply toward their post-secondary education tuition and fees. In addition, the scholarship is renewable for up to four years, for a total possible funding of $40,000 per recipient.
The event was the first of its kind for the Foundation and will be an annual partnership with businesses to celebrate exceptional faculty and staff in the Eau Claire Area School District. After-School Board Game Club Raising funds to direct back into the Eau Claire public schools is our purpose. Each year, the Foundation offers grants to support new projects, exciting initiatives, or high-impact field trips. In 2016, one of these grants supported a new after-school board game club for the students at Northstar Middle School. The club offers students the opportunity to play and strategize with their classmates, learn new games, and practice critical thinking and good sportsmanship. Mrs. Rettke, the game club’s advisor, shared that “whenever we can make a connection to a student through a game, or promote learning with a hands-on activity, we are making a difference in a student’s life!”

Thank You! The Eau Claire Community Foundation and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation would like to thank everyone who so generously contributed this year. Thanks to these benefactors, our schools and nonprofit organizations will be strengthened for years to come. Although we only have space to print the names of donors who contributed $250 or more in 2016, we want everyone who gave to know how much we appreciate their generosity. Working together, we are making an impact For Good. For Ever. We strive for accuracy when compiling this list, but errors are always possible, and we regret any we may have made. If you notice inaccurate information, contact us so we can correct it in future publications. Because some donors prefer to remain anonymous, we have respected their wishes by not including their names in this list. *Donations of $250 or more are listed.

Eau Claire Community Foundation Honorariums & Memorials Honorariums and Memorials are gifts from donors for special purposes. Memorial gifts honor the memory of a friend of loved one who has passed away. An Honorarium is a gift from a donor to recognize an event, a special living person, or a significant occasion. Memorials and Honorariums create lasting legacy for the honored person or event because they serve a charitable purpose into perpetuity. Donors of Memorials or Honorariums can designate their gift to a specific Fund held at the Eau Claire Community Foundation, or the gift can be placed in the Community Fund, an unrestricted Fund that is used to make grants that address the greatest needs of the community. Gifts can also be designated to the ECCF Operations Fund to help forward our mission.
