to see their gift’s impact increased by being made through a community foundation.
Their vision was an organization that would work through other community nonprofit organizations without competing with them for funds. But no action was taken for many years. Then two key events served as a catalyst for the formation of the Foundation:
Prompted by these two events, in January 1997 the Board of Trustees established a goal of finding 25 individuals by December 31, 1998, to become members of the Society of Founders. Each member was asked to make an unrestricted commitment of $10,000 (or more).

We’ve made a lot of progress during our first 20 years, but we’re also looking toward the future. In October, our Board of Trustees came together and focused on a strategic plan. We look forward to using that plan to expand on our past accomplishments and do even more in the years to come. This plan will guide ECCF in whom it serves, strengthen its operations, and focus on establishing endowed funds that focus on the future of the greater Eau Claire area.

But being successful business owners wasn’t the only important thing to Eau Claire natives Lois and Arnie Domer. “I wanted to give something back to the community,” Arnie once explained. As a result, they spent countless hours volunteering for charitable organizations. They never forgot where they came from, and they wanted their impact on Eau Claire to live on after them. The Draper Hills Financial Literacy Fund supports a financial literacy program serving both students (primary, middle and high school) and adults in the School District of Loyal. Thanks to these new classes, Loyal students will graduate high school with a strong ability to manage their personal finances. Adults can access the same knowledge through evening classes.
In 1987, Eldon retired from his private practice. He used his retirement fund and his passion for the stock market to grow his wealth considerably. He currently manages portfolios using Motley Fool as a resource. Eldon established these Funds so he could honor the families who played such a pivotal role in his life. Anna Hills, Bernice Draper, and Bessie Edsall all believed in the importance of education; thanks to Eldon’s Funds, generations of Loyal graduates will carry on their legacy.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the spring of 2006, she defied the initial prognosis that she had fewer than two months left to live. Instead, she fought on for almost 9 years. During the process, Babbette traveled many miles, stayed in hospitals, and endured grueling treatments. Her battle strengthened her resolve to improve life for other patients and to ultimately create a world without cancer. Although Babbette passed away in 2014, her dream lives on. Her family created a fitting tribute: Every year, they plant hundreds of acres of the sunflowers she so loved. GIVING LATER Your planned giving ensures the future forever.
LEGACY SOCIETY The Eau Claire Community Foundation established the Legacy Society to recognize its members who have made provisions in their estate plans to provide a gift to the Foundation for the causes they care about the most.
Bequests left via will or trust can help you reduce your estate taxes while supporting your community forever.
By including the Eau Claire Community Foundation in your will, establishing a charitable gift annuity
Charitable Gift Annuities offer you stable, secure income while giving you an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift.
Legacy Society look beyond the here and now to the future well–being of the greater Eau Claire area.
Charitable Lead Trusts may enable you to transfer appreciating assets to family members tax-free while making gifts to your fund in the interim. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts offer you predictable income and an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift. They are invested and managed separately, and you avoid all capital gains tax on any appreciated assets you contribute to them. They also reduce your estate tax liability. Life Insurance allows you to make a significant charitable impact at very little cost. You can name your fund as a beneficiary and give later. You can also donate an existing policy and take an immediate tax deduction. Retirement Plans, when passed to an heir, are quickly depleted by double taxation. Instead, you can name your fund at the Eau Claire Community Foundation as the beneficiary and avoid taxes, leave more to your family, and preserve your hard-earned assets for the good of your community. Real Estate, for many individuals, can be a logical donation for charitable giving. When working with your professional advisor and the Foundation, you can avoid capital gains and establish a fund that supports your philanthropic goals, forever. * The Eau Claire Community Foundation does not offer legal advice to individuals regarding their estate plans. We encourage donors considering a bequest to the Foundation to work with their legal and financial advisors.

An ECCF grant is helping them meet these needs by adding an additional 1.5 kilometers of lighted trails and upgrading the existing lights. Helpful Hearts continues to gain momentum. It holds two annual fundraisers and was also featured in a news story about a family that had lost twin babies; Helpful Hearts aided the grief-stricken parents with the funeral costs. While Helpful Hearts mostly assists with funeral costs for children, anyone with a financial need can apply, regardless of the funeral home they choose. With a 2017 ECCF grant and other community support, Helpful Hearts is creating a more hopeful ending for bereaved families’ stories.

Jim Pinter
The 2017 Leadership Award was awarded to Jim Pinter, whose positive impact on the Foundation has been extensive. Jim helped to create the Foundation—he and his wife Kathy joined the Society of Founders in 1998—and his other contributions began almost immediately. He became a member of the Communications Committee in 1998 and then moved to the Development Committee. He also became a Board of Trustees member in 2007 and served as Development Committee Chair until 2013. In addition to this already impressive list of accomplishments, Jim helped found a nonprofit, Leave a Legacy Chippewa Valley, Inc. His goal was to educate the community about the importance of legacy giving and theimpact it makes on the future of area nonprofits. Kathy has also done much to improve Eau Claire’s quality of life. She’s a Founder of the Women’s Giving Circle, which was established in 2007. That same year, Jim and Kathy started the Jim and Kathy Pinter Mental Health Fund,

A STORY OF LEADERSHIP
2017 ECCF Leadership Award
Unrestricted Funds honor the legacy of a person or family by making grants to meet the community’s ever-changing needs in their name. The Foundation’s Board and staff identify your area’s most compelling needs and award grants from your fund to the programs best suited to meet them. This is an excellent way for your family to address future challenges in the community. These funds can be started with as little as $500 and have 5 years to grow to their granting level of $10,000. Field of Interest Funds allow you to permanently support your broad philanthropic passions. You choose your favorite interest area - such as arts, education, or health care – and a committee will recommend grants to promising projects in that area now and long after you’re gone. These funds can be started with as little as $500 and have 5 years to grow to their granting level of $10,000.
One of the greatest gifts you can give to a cause, organization, or even your family is the power to give back through a fund at the Foundation. Establishing an endowment fund helps you do just that, forever. The diversity and ease of ECCF’s giving options help you make a decision either by creating a new fund, donating to existing funds, or by giving through planned gifts. You can establish an endowment fund with as a little as $500 a year and build your fund over 5 years to reach its level for granting. Gifts of cash, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, closely held stock, or real estate (whether home or business)

Designated Funds allow you to support your favorite nonprofit organization, church, or school forever. A single fund can support one or more charities, even specific programs of these charities. If the organization you choose eventually ceases to exist, the Foundation will redirect the fund’s income to reflect your original charitable intent. These funds can be started with as little as $500 and have 5 years to grow to their granting level of $10,000.
