2014 Express The Eau Claire community again welcomes the Eau Claire Express and their fans to another season at Carson Park stadium. As visitors to the park know, baseball is an essential part of summer in west central Wisconsin – in fact, it just isn’t summer until the bright lights of the stadium flood the night sky and the radio announcer hollers “Play Ball!” The city is very proud of its historic stadium. Home to Eau Claire baseball since 1937, Carson Park Stadium has hosted many exciting seasons of youth and amateurbaseball. As one of the last surviving examples of a Works’ Progress Administration era project, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The land that became Carson Park was donated 100 years ago this year, in 1914, to the City of Eau Claire, by an heir to William Carson, an early Eau Claire lumberman. Although people had enjoyed this peninsula for recreation since the mid 1800’s, the 130-acre park (Eau Claire’s largest park) was now officially a public Kincaid open space. We take great care to maintain the park’s historic significance through constant restoration and improvements. The city’s attention to this important landmark means it will be enjoyed for years to come. As you can see, Carson Park is an active place. Teams of all ages play baseball on one of the fields almost every day of summer. Several now-famous players have also “cracked the bat” at Carson Park - Hank Aaron, Bob Uecker, Joe Torre and Andy Pafko. Who knows--the makings of the next famous player may be in our midst this season! We hope you have a wonderful day at our ballpark rooting for your team. Between innings, feel free to enjoy beautiful Carson Park surrounding the stadium. Kerry Kincaid, President Eau Claire City Council

Welcome letters The City of Eau Claire is proud to welcome you to the historic Carson Park Baseball Stadium. Our staff is excited to begin the 77th season of baseball in this stadium. This year marks 100 years since the land that Carson Park rests on was donated to the city. This old stadium was built in 1937 with help from the Works Progress Administration at a cost of $60,000. Each year over 100 ball games are played on this field by area high schools, American Legion, the Cavaliers and the Express. Our ball diamond maintenance crews strive to make Carson the best place to play ball in the Northwoods League. This Fieber season for the Eau Claire Express promises to be even more exciting for Eau Claire families. We invite you to tour the stadium and the Eau Claire Baseball Hall of Fame at the Hank Aaron Plaza. Hammerin’ Hank finally has some company in the plaza, with inductions of: Herman White; Dick “Ran” Bezanson; Tom Poquette; Victor “Vic” Johnson; Harvey Tomter; “Handy” Andy Pafko, Glen St. Arnault and Eau Claire Little League Founders Andy Green, Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Howie Bullock and the 41 Eau Claire natives that made into the minor leagues by signing professional baseball contracts. Carson Park is surrounded by an ancient ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Chippewa River and offers many opportunities for recreation enjoyment including canoeing and fishing. Good luck to all Northwoods League players and we hope the fans enjoy your time at Carson Park and in Eau Claire! Phil Fieber, Director Eau Claire Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department

Tonight’s Game Tonight’s Sponsor:
Pitching matchup:
Kurt Yinger Portland
Cody Peterson UW-Milwaukee
The matchup: A slight miracle is going to keep the Express alive in the second half standings, as just one Waterloo win will eliminate Eau Claire. It won’t be easy, either, as first-half champion Willmar comes to town for a two-game series. Kurt Yinger will get the call for the Stingers while Cody Peterson will get his first home start for the Express. Yinger is 3-2 in eight starts on the year for Willmar. He can eat up innings as he has gone six innings or more in seven of his eight contests. Peterson is a late-season additon for the Express and has only pitched five innings. He was 4-3 this spring for the UW-Milwaukee Panthers. Both pitchers are right handers. About Eau Claire: The Express offense went stagnant in a crucial doubleheader loss yesterday to the Duluth Huskies. The offense stranded a total of 17 runners in 14 innigns of play, including ending game one with guys one the corners down by a run. Twelve players played in the Northwoods League’s Big League Dreams Showcase Game in Madison Tuesday night, the most by any team in the league by far. About Willmar: The Stingers have been the best team in the North for the majority of the season. They won the first half and remain in the hunt for the second half title, as well. The Stingers get it done by mashing the heck out of the baseball, as they have 49 home runs as a team. Nick Rivera leads them with his 13 roundtrippers on the year, which is third in the league. They play nine usually, right? Tonight will be the first time since Friday Eau Claire will play a full-nine inning game after a doubleheader Sunday and a doubleheader last night. Doubleheaders last seven innings.

By Nick Erickson, Media Relations Photos by Rosalyn Zirngible It doesn’t matter what base it is or how he gets there. Whenever Daniel Salters gets aboard, whether it be by hit, walk or error, he points up to the sky to count his blessings. And it’s all genuine, as a unique childhood experience has the Dallas Baptist catcher thankful for a lot of things. From 1998 until 2006, Salters, the son of Christian missionaries, lived on the continent of Africa in the poverty-stricken countries of Kenya and Tanzania. “You don’t realized how incredibly blessed you are,” Salters said. “It kind of gives me a different perspective than other people.” It’s evident to anyone who has interacted with the power-hitting lefty, whose father was a pilot and drove other missionar-

ies to carry out deeds to those who needed it most. He’s always the first one to say hello, his smile is contagious and he evens shakes the hands of the umpire before each game. “I grew up with a Christian family, and they raised me to love the Lord, and that shaped my whole childhood,” Salters said. While his skill is obvious, just ask the baseball he crushed for a walk-off home run on June 20 that found itself on the Carson Park tennis courts well beyond the rightfield billboards, his character is what stands out to people in and out of the baseball world. Salters didn’t start playing baseball until he got back to the United States, putting him a bit behind the eight ball for someone looking to make it to the highest stage. After a successful high school career in his hometown of Eufaula, Okla., Salters played one year of junior college ball. That’s where Dallas Baptist head coach Dan Heefner first heard about him. Heefner knew his talents were still being developed, but he also knew after a few visits with him that no matter how much he needed to develop some of the more finetune parts of the game. “But then you get to know him and what kind of person he is and what his character and work ethic are like, that’s when you it was a slam dunk and this guy’s going to end up being really good,” Heefner said. But Heefner, much like many Northwoods League pitchers have now discov-
the call
l Salters the person he is today ered, also sees the baseball potential for Salters. He’s a rare combination of power and finesse. Not only can he hit a ball 450 feet, but he can also take an 0-2 pitch the other way for a seeing-eye single, as he did in the Northwoods League All-Star Game on July 22. He can also hop up out of his crouch behind the plate to throw a runner out, as he did Tuesday at the Northwoods League Big League Dreams Showcase Game in Madison. And he’s still learning. “The sky is the limit for him,” Heefner said. “We’ve had a bunch of players drafted out of our program and make it to the Major Leagues, and Daniel’s right there as far as his work ethic, character and talent level.” That’s mighty high praise for a program that has seen the likes of Major Leaguers Ben Zobrist, Vic Black and Ryan Goins. Baseball is a game that tests the patience of everyone who plays it. There will be nights a hitter simply can’t hit anything. There are nights where a pitcher can’t find the strike zone. But Salters learned things in Africa that he carries with him to the dish to counter the frustrations of the game. “In baseball, there’s ups and downs, and one thing I’ve learned, at least for me, I rely on the Lord, and he has a plan,” he said. Big goals dominate Daniel Salters. And not just for himself, but for his team. Heefner said Salters leads by example and brings
everyone around him up. But individually, he is going to put in the work to become a first-round draft pick. Salters, who was picked in the 22nd round this year by the Washington Nationals, will continue to hone his game to make that a reality. And no matter what round he’s picked in or what profession he ultimately pursues, one thing is for darn certain: he will answer the call and lift up those in his presence.
Always thankful: Salters lives a life based off his Chirstian upbringing. 15
