Welcome Letters D

ear Northwoods League Fans:
On behalf of everyone associated with the Eau Claire Express, I want to welcome you to historic Carson Park for another year of Northwoods League baseball. As we begin our twelfth year of operation, I’d like to reflect on some of the changes that have taken place with the Express. First, we’ve expanded our ownership group to include Dale Varsho and Andy Neborak. This was due in large part to the “sweat equity” that both had accumulated in the team over the years, plus it insures that the Express will continue to operate in the community for many years to come. Second, and most importantly, we have made a financial commitment to the Carson Park renovation project that will guarantee everyone, nothing but the best for your future visits to Carson Park. In collaboration with the city of Eau Claire, we have pledged to improve the stadium experience, starting with the construction of permanent bleachers on both the first and third base sides of the stadium. With this expansion will come stadium seating, climate-controlled restrooms, and new concession areas. In addition, we are creating an apparel area for our fans to shop for concessions in a more comfortable and expanded environment. Also planned in the construction project is the installation of artificial turf, which will guarantee that more games can be scheduled at Carson Park with less maintenance charges incurred by the City and users. Also, when completed, the stadium will have an expanded concourse area outside of the stadium that will provide our fans with an additional area to “socialize” before, during, and after games The City will be releasing more information on these projects during the upcoming months. In the meantime, if you care to contribute to this project we will be announcing fundraising goals and pledge opportunities during the season. When approved by the City, this project will commence following the 2017 season. And, as always, I want to extend a special “thank you” to our many game-day sponsors who have provided our fans with the very best in entertainment over the years. This year is no exception! From the Friday night firework shows, bobble-head doll and t-shirt giveaways, dueling piano and human canonball entertainment, our season-long promotion schedule will be greater than ever. So sit back, have some great food and beverage, and enjoy the fun and excitement of Eau Claire Express baseball. Bill Rowlett & the entire staff of the Eau Claire Express

Historic Carson Park is one of the more picturesque parks in the Northwoods League, located in the middle of the City’s largest park that includes an adjacent football stadium, softball fields, logging museum, the Chippewa Valley Museum, horseshoe pits, and numerous hiking and biking trails. Varsho’s 400th win sets up Express title run By Patrick Malin:
The July 4th Fireworks at Carson Park represented more than just a celebration of America’s 240th birthday. Longtime Express manager Dale Varsho clinched his 400th career victory, the first Northwoods League manager to accomplish the feat.
Heading into his 12th season at the helm of the Eau Claire Express, Varsho sat just one win behind Darrell Handelsman in career victories with the landmark 400th win in the near horizon. This season’s Express squad provided the necessary 24 wins in an efficient fashion, earning the landmark victory in front of a sellout crowd at the stadium where Varsho had earned so many victories before. Varsho is the only manager within the top-four winningest coaches in Northwoods League history to spend his entire tenure with one team. Varsho has produced two MLB talents, as well as many aspiring players looking for their shot to catapult into the world’s largest baseball stage. On a normal night, Varsho would have dismissed the fuss and celebration, even when clinching his 400th victory. July 4th’s memorable win however, represented much more to the team in a heated North Division playoff race.
Varsho’s 400th win looked to be locked up in the fifth inning of a home game against the La Crosse Loggers, who were attempting to be the spoilers in Eau Claire’s title pursuit. Two teams were left battling the final two games of the first half of the season: the St. Cloud Rox and the Eau Claire Express. Heading into Independence Day, the Express trailed St. Cloud by a half game with the Rox slated for an early afternoon game. The Rox fell early to the Rivets by double digits, opening the door for Eau Claire to seize sole control of first place in the penultimate game of the first half of the 2016 season. The Express capitalized on the opportunity, blowing out the Loggers with a season-high 16 runs in the 16-6 win. The win solidified the Express atop the North Division (and the Northwoods League), setting up a thrilling final day to decide who received the automatic playoff bid. On July 5th, the final day of the first half of the season, the
26
St. Cloud Rox took care of business with an authoritative victory to force the Express into a must-win situation against the La Crosse Loggers at Copeland Park.
The weather report was not promising, with downpours scheduled to hamper the completion of the title bout. A postponement would mean the title would go to the Rox. The teams battled to a tie in the sixth inning when the rain commenced. The field at Copeland Park quickly became flooded, with the umpires signaling an upcoming delay. The Park emptied as spectators assumed the game would be called. The Northwoods League was faced with a tough decision, whether or not to cancel the game. At 11:55 p.m., following a nearly three hour weather delay, play resumed in La Crosse. The Express wasted no time, as Ben Mezzenga led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on a stolen base and a sacrifice fly. Alex McKenna ripped a single to score the go-ahead run, and later scored himself on a Zach Kesterson wild pitch, giving Eau Claire a 5-3 lead late in the game.
Kenny Ogg stepped up on the mound to earn the victory, shutting the Loggers down and with a few added insurance runs in the eighth, closed out any comeback opportunity. The win broke a six-season playoff drought for the Express, their last appearance coming in 2010 when the team won the Northwoods League Championship. With a full second half remaining, the Express will look to prepare and improve for the upcoming postseason where they hope to repeat the result of their last playoff run.

This Day in Baseball... July 13 1971- In a game which features six home runs, the American League beats the NL, 6-4 in All-Star action. All the players who homer, J. Bench, H. Aaron, R. Clemente, F. Robinson, H. Killebrew as well as Reggie, will coincidentally become members of the Hall of Fame. 1896- Phillies outfielder Ed Delahanty hits four home runs in one game in a 9-8 loss to the hometown Colts. All four of the future hall of famer’s homers were inside-the-park home runs. 1982- In the first All-Star game played outside the United States, the National League cruises to its 11th straight win, beating the American League at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, 4-1. 1934- During the third inning in front of 20,000 fans at Navin Field in Detroit, Babe Ruth crushes a Tommy Bridges’ 3-2 pitch far over the right field wall for his 700th career home run.
