Welcome Letters D

ear Northwoods League Fans:

On behalf of everyone associated with the Eau Claire Express, I want to welcome you to historic Carson Park for another year of Northwoods League baseball. This season, at the request of our City Council, we will be implementing changes on the fan deck, eliminating the complimentary “all you can drink” beer provisions to our fans. Instead, fans will be provided with four complimentary drinks with their food, with additional drinks available until the completion of our games for a nominal fee of $1 each. As we begin our 2nd decade, I’d like to take a moment and reflect on the economic impact that the Express has provided to the citizens of Eau Claire and the Chippewa Valley. First, we’ve made over $500K worth of capital improvements to the baseball stadium, and have pledged to commit $10K annually to the Community Parks Fund, (an amount to be matched by the City); to insure that needed improvements will continue to be made. Your ongoing support of our “Pot of Gold” ticket sales goes directly to this effort. If you identify improvements that you feel should be made to, or within the stadium please don’t hesitate to contact your City Council representative, or let us know what they might be. And second, we have provided over 700 part-time summer jobs, plus over 100 summer intern positions to college-age students, many who have secured full-time employment in athletic-related positions. Not unlike our Express players, many of our employees seek opportunities with major league baseball, and we’re proud of the fact that we’ve had a number of employees obtain positions in baseball, specifically with the Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago Cubs organizations. I want to extend a special “thank you” to our many game-day sponsors who have provided our fans with the very best in entertainment over the years. And this year is no exception! From the Friday night firework shows, bobble head doll giveaways, dueling piano entertainment, appearances by Ickey Woods and Kevin Nash, to a special appearance by the world famous Cowboy Monkeys, our season-long promotion schedule should be as great as ever! So, as always, sit back, have some great food and beverage, and enjoy the fun and excitement of Eau Claire Express baseball. Bill Rowlett & the entire staff of the Eau Claire Express

The city of Eau Claire is proud to welcome you to the historic Carson Park Baseball Stadium. Our staff is excited to begin the 77th season of baseball in this stadium. This year marks 100 years since the land that Carson Park rests on was donated to the city. This old stadium was built in 1937 with help from the Works Progress Administration at a cost of $60,000. Each year over 100 ball games are played on this field by area high schools, American Legion, the Cavaliers and the Express. Our ball diamond maintenance crews strive to make Carson the best place to play ball in Northwoods League. This season for the Eau Claire Express promises to be even more exciting for Eau Claire families. We invite you to tour the stadium and the Eau Claire baseball Hall of Fame at the Hank Aaron Plaza. Hammerin’ Hank finally has some company in the plaza, with inductions of: Herman White; Dick “Ran” Bezanson; Tom Poquette; Victor “Vic” Johnson; Harvey Tomter; “Handy” Andy Pafko, Glen St. Arnault and Eau Claire Little League Founders Andy Green, Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Howie Bullock and the 41 Eau Claire natives that made into the minor leagues by signing professional baseball contracts. Carson Park is surrounded by an ancient ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Chippewa River and offers many opportunities for recreation enjoyment including canoeing and fishing. Good luck to all Northwoods League players and we hope the fans enjoy your time at Carson Park and in Eau Claire! Phil Fieber, Director Eau Claire Parks Recreation and Forestry Department

Carson Park: The home of Stadium Facts:

Year Built: 1937 Stadium Capacity: 4,500 Playing Dimensions: Left Field - 326 Feet

Center Field - 388 Feet Right Field - 302 Feet

Address: 702 Carson Park Drive

History:

Carson Park, home to the Eau Claire Express since 2005, is one of the more historical parks in the Upper Midwest. Home to the minor league baseball Eau Claire Bears, and later the Eau Claire Braves of the original class C Northern League, Carson Park served as the home field for many future major league stars, including future Hall of Fame players Andy Pafko, Henry Aaron, and Joe Torre. A statue honoring Aaron sits outside of the entrance to the stadium. Historic Carson Park is one of the more picturesque parks in the Northwoods League, located in the middle of the City’s largest park that includes an adjacent football stadium, softball fields, logging museum, the Chippewa Valley Museum, horseshoe pits, and numerous hiking and biking trails. The Stadium has served as the host site for many WIAA state baseball tournaments, along with many national amateur baseball tournaments over the years.

16

Recent Improvements:

The City of Eau Claire, along with the Eau Claire Baseball, LLC have both made significant improvements to the Carson Park baseball stadium since the creation of the Express in 2005. The City has greatly improved the lighting at the stadium by replacing and relocating four poles that provide lighting to the infield areas at Carson Park. And recently, (2012) the scoreboard was replaced. Since 2005, the Express have made approximately 3/4 of a million dollars worth of improvements within the stadium, mostly fan-friendly. Included among them are the following: The multi-level fan deck, the message display board, a new stadium and fan deck sound system, concessin grill and fryers plus a beer garden, a secondary scoreboard for fan deck patrons, expanded grandstand bench seating, bullpen benches, portable toilets and hand wash stations, expanded food service area, the kid’s zone complete with inflatable play areas, expanded press box area, stadium wall padding, serving tables with warming drawers and upright storage freezers, and a combination storage shed and viewing deck.

Roommates. Teammates.

Best Friends. Express aces share special bond after freshman season at Minnesota St. By Jake Steen: When most players see their first action in the Northwoods League they typically have some college experience already under their belt. But after Dalton Roach graduated from Eau Claire Memorial with a stellar pitching career that included twice being named All-Conference, Conference Player of the Year his senior season and an ERA under 1 he got the chance to pitch for the Eau Claire Express before starting his freshman season at Minnesota St. That’s where he met Mavericks teammate and now Express teammate Brody Rodning. Rodning was preparing for his freshman season pitching for the Mavericks as well when they were assigned as roommates in the same dorm. “It was completely random,” said Roach. “We got to know each other real well.” Both players would end up having remarkable seasons in their first year at Minnesota St. leading the way as effective starters. Roach would end his freshman season with a 6-1 record, posting a 1.91 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 9 starts and 13 appearances. Rodning had similar numbers going 9-0 with a 2.85 ERA in 7 starts and 14 appearances. He tallied 65 strikeouts, three behind Roach as the two led the team in that category by a wide margin. “We started out the year both battling for spots then we moved up into the rotation as starters,” said Rodning. “I was the number one guy for awhile and he was two. And then it switched where he was the number one and I was the two.” Being teammates and roommates gives these two players a special bond that is only beginning to grow as they continue their college careers. It’s something that Express Field Manager Dale Varsho already can see in his short time coaching

the two.

24

Roach

Rodning

“They’re living together so they must be really good friends,” said Varsho. “I know the Roaches took in Brody for the summer too.” This is Roach’s first full season with the Express. Last season he appeared in two games pitching two total innings. Varsho has been impressed with what he’s seen from him so far. “Dalton played for us last year,” said Varsho. “He spots up, does well, throws hard enough to get people to swing and miss. He’s a really good pitcher.” Even though he’s only watched Rodning pitch one game for the Express he can see the similarities in pitching styles between the two young aces. “Brody is the same concept,” said Varsho. “He’ll hump up when he has to and throw it by people, yet he throws enough off-speed to keep them off balance.” He knew Roach would be back with the Express this season so it was an easy choice touting his counter part Rodning here for the summer. “I’ve always had Mankato guys so it was a pretty easy solution for me to keep grabbing good guys from there,” said Varsho. “Coach Matt Magers over there develops pitchers, he loves his pitchers and trusts me with them. It’s pretty simple.” While the Northwoods League season only lasts a little over two months, Varsho knows team friendships can be they key to a winning season. “Were hoping with all of them they’ve got some bonding to do and they’ll develop good friendships all the way through the summer,” said Varsho. “Not just those two but the whole entire team.”

Did you know... on this day in baseball... 1901 - Christy Mathewson becomes the first rookie to throw a no-hitter in baseball history in the modern era. The 20 year-old right-hander holds the Cardinals hitless in the Giants’ 5-0 victory at Robison Field in St. Louis. 1999 - The Brewers postpone their game against Kansas City as a gesture of respect for the three workers who died when a huge crane collapsed lifting a portion of the roof for the team’s new stadium, Miller Park. The crane broke in half as it lifted the 400-ton load, damaging the partially completed stadium. 2007 - In front of a sellout crowd of 44,872 at Citizens Bank Park, the 125,year-old Phillies become the first team to lose 10,000 games as they are defeated by the Cardinals, 10-2. During the ninth inning, the hometown fans cheer as the much heralded milestone becomes a reality.
