Welcome Letters D

ear Northwoods League Fans:
On behalf of everyone associated with the Eau Claire Express, I want to welcome you to historic Carson Park for another year of Northwoods League baseball. As we begin our twelfth year of operation, I’d like to reflect on some of the changes that have taken place with the Express. First, we’ve expanded our ownership group to include Dale Varsho and Andy Neborak. This was due in large part to the “sweat equity” that both had accumulated in the team over the years, plus it insures that the Express will continue to operate in the community for many years to come. Second, and most importantly, we have made a financial commitment to the Carson Park renovation project that will guarantee everyone, nothing but the best for your future visits to Carson Park. In collaboration with the city of Eau Claire, we have pledged to improve the stadium experience, starting with the construction of permanent bleachers on both the first and third base sides of the stadium. With this expansion will come stadium seating, climate-controlled restrooms, and new concession areas. In addition, we are creating an apparel area for our fans to shop for concessions in a more comfortable and expanded environment. Also planned in the construction project is the installation of artificial turf, which will guarantee that more games can be scheduled at Carson Park with less maintenance charges incurred by the City and users. Also, when completed, the stadium will have an expanded concourse area outside of the stadium that will provide our fans with an additional area to “socialize” before, during, and after games The City will be releasing more information on these projects during the upcoming months. In the meantime, if you care to contribute to this project we will be announcing fundraising goals and pledge opportunities during the season. When approved by the City, this project will commence following the 2017 season. And, as always, I want to extend a special “thank you” to our many game-day sponsors who have provided our fans with the very best in entertainment over the years. This year is no exception! From the Friday night firework shows, bobble-head doll and t-shirt giveaways, dueling piano and human canonball entertainment, our season-long promotion schedule will be greater than ever. So sit back, have some great food and beverage, and enjoy the fun and excitement of Eau Claire Express baseball. Bill Rowlett & the entire staff of the Eau Claire Express

The city of Eau Claire is proud to welcome you to the historic Carson Park Baseball Stadium. Our staff is excited to begin the 79th season of baseball in this stadium. Each year over 100 ball games are played on this field by area high schools, American Legion, the Cavaliers and the Express. Our ball diamond maintenance crews strive to make Carson the best place to play ball in Northwoods League. This season for the Eau Claire Express promises to be even more exciting for Eau Claire families. We invite you to tour the stadium and the Eau Claire baseball Hall of Fame at the Hank Aaron Plaza. Hammerin’ Hank finally has some company in the plaza, with inductions of: Herman White; Dick “Ran” Bezanson; Tom Poquette; Victor “Vic” Johnson; Harvey Tomter; “Handy” Andy Pafko, Glen St. Arnault and Eau Claire Little League Founders Andy Green, Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Howie Bullock and the 41 Eau Claire natives that made into the minor leagues by signing professional baseball contracts. Carson Park is surrounded by an ancient ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Chippewa River and offers many opportunities for recreation enjoyment including canoeing and fishing. Game Preview T
he Express blanked the Bucks last night at Carson Park 2-0. Eau Claire now sits just a half game back of St. Cloud for the top spot in the North Division, with just two games remaining in the first half of the season with a playoff spot on the line. Ryan Hamilton was excellent for the Express in the key game against Waterloo last night, pitching six scoreless innings with three strikeouts and allowing just five hits. Hamilton improved his overall record to an even 3-3 with yesterday’s win. Zach Ashford hit the eventual gamewinning fielder’s choice in the third inning. Rudy Rott added an RBI double to score pinch hitter Alex McKenna in the bottom of the eighth to give Eau Claire a needed insurance run.
Gomez holds an 0-1 record in just two
starts for the Express this summer. The right-hander from Cal Poly hopes to rebound from a tough start against the Rafters on the June 29th double header. Gomez pitched just one inning, and was forced to exit the game due to Northwoods League Pitching Guidelines.
This is Gomez’s second season as a
starting pitcher for the Eau Claire Express. In the 2015 season for the Express, Gomez started eight games, earning a 3-2 record while posting a 4.32 ERA.
Thanks for coming out to Carson Park and as always ...

Historic Carson Park is one of the more picturesque parks in the Northwoods League, located in the middle of the City’s largest park that includes an adjacent football stadium, softball fields, logging museum, the Chippewa Valley Museum, horseshoe pits, and numerous hiking and biking trails. Hurt, Boushley Earn Northwoods Honors By Patrick Malin:
Two members of the Eau Claire Express earned Northwoods League accolades for impressive performances this weekendSam and Caleb Boushley were selected as the Northwoods League Player and Pitcher of the Night respectively for their strong this weekend. Hurt was chosen as the Player of the Night on July 3rd in Eau Claire’s 5-3 win over the Waterloo Bucks on Saturday night. Hurt was 2-3 from the plate with a single and the game-winning three-run triple in the seventh inning. Hurt’s first three-bagger of the season gave the Express a lead in the bottom of the seventh, clearing the bases against Bucks’ reliever Nate Spielvogel.
Hurt was named player of the game two consecutive nights for the Express, with a 4-4 performance in July 2nd’s dominant win over the Rochester Honkers. He has caught fire at the plate recently, increasing his batting average 70 percentage points in the past few games. Hurt is a solid .235 from the plate in his third season in Eau Claire, with 11 RBI’s, 12 runs scored, and one home run.
In his first season at Kent State, Hurt batted .198 in 31 games, driving in eight runs and drawing 17 walks. Hurt spent his first two collegiate years at Madison College where he hit .437 his sophomore season. Hurt is in his third season playing for the Express, after a temporary contract in 2014 and a full season donning the orange and black in the summer of 2015. In his 2015 campaign, Hurt hit .267 with 12 RBI’s with a team-leading 28 walks drawn. Caleb Boushley has been spectacular on the rubber for Eau Claire, and was recognized for his strong season with a Pitcher of the Night nod on July 1st. Boushley pitched seven innings in the 13-3 win, al-
26
lowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven opposing batters. He pitched five scoreless innings to start the ball game, only allowing a run on a home run in the sixth.
With five innings of scoreless baseball in the start, Boushley had totaled 18 innings without allowing a run to cross the plate, dating back to June 10th in his start against the Mankato MoonDogs. Boushley pitched two shut outs, keeping the Green Bay Bullfrogs and St. Cloud Rox off the score sheet on his last two starts.
Boushley has been able to relentlessly pound the strike zone in five starts, consistently painting the corners and baffling opposing hitters. Boushley displayed his immense control this season at UWLa Crosse, where he was 10-0 in the regular season with a 2.20 ERA on one of the top teams in Division III baseball. Boushley was selected as a first team All-American for his excellent performance in the 2016 collegiate season.
Both Boushley and Bohanek will hope to continue accumulating awards and put up strong performances for the Express this season. The two players will be key in the playoff push in the North Division for the Express nearing the halfway point in the season with Eau Claire just a half game out of first place.

This Day in Baseball... July 4 2004- The selection of Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., and Sammy Sosa as starters in the NL All-Stars lineup marks the first time in baseball history in which three players with 500 career home runs have appeared on the same team. The trio will appear in the starting outfield in the 75th All-Star Game in Houston’s Minute Maid Park. 1939- It’s Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium and ‘the Iron Horse’s’ uniform number 4 will be the first ever to be retired. After emcee Sid Mercer informs the sell-out crowd the man of the hour is too moved to speak, Gehrig changes his mind when Skipper Joe McCarthy encourages him, and delivers the keynote address in baseball history, describing himself as “the luckiest man on the face of this earth”. 1900- Approximately one thousand people in the crowd of 10,000 fans attending the game at Chicago’s West Side Grounds celebrate Independence Day by firing pistols into the air. The Orphans shoot down the visiting the Philadelphia team in 12 innings, 5-4.
