Welcome Letters D

ear Northwoods League Fans:
On behalf of everyone associated with the Eau Claire Express, I want to welcome you to historic Carson Park for another year of Northwoods League baseball. As we begin our twelfth year of operation, I’d like to reflect on some of the changes that have taken place with the Express. First, we’ve expanded our ownership group to include Dale Varsho and Andy Neborak. This was due in large part to the “sweat equity” that both had accumulated in the team over the years, plus it insures that the Express will continue to operate in the community for many years to come. Second, and most importantly, we have made a financial commitment to the Carson Park renovation project that will guarantee everyone, nothing but the best for your future visits to Carson Park. In collaboration with the city of Eau Claire, we have pledged to improve the stadium experience, starting with the construction of permanent bleachers on both the first and third base sides of the stadium. With this expansion will come stadium seating, climate-controlled restrooms, and new concession areas. In addition, we are creating an apparel area for our fans to shop for concessions in a more comfortable and expanded environment. Also planned in the construction project is the installation of artificial turf, which will guarantee that more games can be scheduled at Carson Park with less maintenance charges incurred by the City and users. Also, when completed, the stadium will have an expanded concourse area outside of the stadium that will provide our fans with an additional area to “socialize” before, during, and after games The City will be releasing more information on these projects during the upcoming months. In the meantime, if you care to contribute to this project we will be announcing fundraising goals and pledge opportunities during the season. When approved by the City, this project will commence following the 2017 season. And, as always, I want to extend a special “thank you” to our many game-day sponsors who have provided our fans with the very best in entertainment over the years. This year is no exception! From the Friday night firework shows, bobble-head doll and t-shirt giveaways, dueling piano and human canonball entertainment, our season-long promotion schedule will be greater than ever. So sit back, have some great food and beverage, and enjoy the fun and excitement of Eau Claire Express baseball. Bill Rowlett & the entire staff of the Eau Claire Express

The city of Eau Claire is proud to welcome you to the historic Carson Park Baseball Stadium. Our staff is excited to begin the 79th season of baseball in this stadium. This old stadium was built in 1937 with help from the Works Progress Administration at a cost of $60,000. Each year over 100 ball games are played on this field by area high schools, American Legion, the Cavaliers and the Express. Our ball diamond maintenance crews strive to make Carson the best place to play ball in Northwoods League. This season for the Eau Claire Express promises to be even more exciting for Eau Claire families. We invite you to tour the stadium and the Eau Claire baseball Hall of Fame at the Hank Aaron Plaza. Hammerin’ Hank finally has some company in the plaza, with inductions of: Herman White; Dick “Ran” Bezanson; Tom Poquette; Victor “Vic” Johnson; Harvey Tomter; “Handy” Andy Pafko, Glen St. Arnault and Eau Claire Little League Founders Andy Green, Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Howie Bullock and the 41 Eau Claire natives that made into the minor leagues by signing professional baseball contracts. Carson Park is surrounded by an ancient ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Chippewa River and offers many opportunities for recreation enjoyment including canoeing and fishing. Good luck to all Northwoods League players and we hope the fans enjoy your time at Carson Park and in Eau Claire! Phil Fieber, Director Eau Claire Parks Recreation and Forestry Department

A statue honoring Aaron sits outside of the entrance to the stadium. Historic Carson Park is one of the more picturesque parks in the Northwoods League, located in the middle of the City’s largest park that includes an adjacent football stadium, softball fields, logging museum, the Chippewa Valley Museum, horseshoe pits, and numerous hiking and biking trails. The Stadium has served as the host site for many WIAA state baseball tournaments, along with many national amateur baseball tournaments over the years.

Express Send Five to College World Series Regional action underway in NCAA Postseason baseball tournament By Patrick Malin:
The Eau Claire Express will be well represented at the regional tournaments of the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship this weekend, with the team sending five players to the touted collegiate tournament. Competition began on June 3rd, with Express roster members beginning their push for a fruitful postseason to lead their teams to glory in Omaha, Nebraska. The Regional tournaments this weekend will be doubleelimination brackets with the regional champion advancing to the Super Regionals, a best of 3 series where the winner will advance to play in the College World Series in Omaha.
Ben Mezzenga, a Shoreview, Minnesota native, has seen limited time in a University of Minnesota uniform in his freshman season. Mezzenga has appeared frequently as a pinch runner for the Golden Gophers, racking up three stolen bases on three attempts for a perfect 100% success rate on the base paths. The Gophers are the second seed in the College Station Region, where they opened up with a tough 5-3 loss against Wake Forest. Minnesota fought back last night, securing an 8-5 victory to eliminate Binghamton. The Gophers will have a rematch with Wake Forest with the winner moving on to compete for a spot in Omaha.
After transferring from Johnson County Community College after a quality performance in the 2015 season, Jon Roblez joined the Alabama State Hornets pitching staff. Roblez made 11 appearances, pitching in 9.1 innings out of the bullpen for the Hornets in the 2016 regular season. He proved to be an effective arm in relief, earning a 1-1 record with a 2.89 ERA and striking out 11 batters.
Alabama State had a tough road in the College World Series, after dropping their first game 18-6 to Florida State. Unfortunately, the team lost its second game 6-3 to South Alabama and was eliminated on the second day of competition.
26
The Express will have three players from the University of New Mexico on the roster this summer upon completion of the 2016 postseason. The Lobos have high expectations heading into the College World Series, holding a 38-21 regular season record, including a victory in the Mountain West Conference Championship to clinch their spot in the elite collegiate tournament.
Lobos’ infielder Jared Mang and outfielder Erick Migueles will play for the Express this summer after successful campaigns at the plate this spring. In 56 games, Mang posted a .287 batting average and added two home runs and 28 RBI’s in his freshman season for New Mexico. Migueles started 22 games for the Lobos, finishing the season with a .386 slugging percentage, including five doubles out of 20 hits.
Christian Tripp will join older brother Jonathon Tripp, current right fielder/pitcher for the Express, in Eau Claire following the College World Series. Tripp appeared in 25 games this spring for the Lobos, a freshman team record at New Mexico. He earned a 2-1 record, tallied 24 strikeouts, clinched four saves, and possessed a 4.13 ERA, while holding opposing batters to a .263 average. The Lobos are the third seed in the Lubbock Region, and impressed in their first game of the tournament, beating Dallas Baptist University by a 12-6 final score. Mang had two hits in the game, and Tripp pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run while preserving the New Mexico lead. They lost on Saturday to number one seed Texas Tech, who took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth. Mang hit a two-run home run in the tough loss. The Lobos will take on Dallas Baptist again, hoping for a rematch with Texas Tech in the Regional finals.

This Day in Baseball... June 5 1989- The SkyDome becomes the new home of the Blue Jays. The stadium has a retractable roof and is considered the world’s most advanced ballpark for its time. 1982 - Cal Ripken’s record-setting span of 8,243 consecutive innings begins with an Orioles’ 3-1 victory over Minnesota at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. 19 - Moving out of a tie with Early Wynn, Nolan Ryan becomes the all-time walk leader (1,777) when he throws two ball fours against the Mets. The Astros right-hander will ended his 27-year career with 2,795 bases on balls, nearly a thousand more than Steve Carlton, who is second on the career lis.
