FURNITURE DESIGN

Working under Ken McCown, department head of Landscape A rchitecture at the University of A rkansas, I worked on a team to design, construct, and finish a series of furniture. The design explored X YZ Joints using birch ply wood. Other team members includes: Kobee Wade, Ma x Frank, Matthew Wilson. Sk i l ls were developed to understand the fabrication process of built forms. Finishes were chosen to emphasize the nature of the materials and construction.

Lofted Residence

Understanding of local needs resulted in proposal of studios, galleries, and an artist in residency program for the Alturas Cultural Arts Center. The goal is to give new life to the arts scene in rural Alturas, California. By locating the site near the Wildlife Reserve, views out to nature are framed in each space for inspiration.

Materials inspired by the regional forrest and volcanic nature of the site. Sustainable material efforts include, reclaimed wood and thrifted furniture.

The existing building serves as a mixed use building for the University of Arkansas. It is a three story, historic building located in the downtown Fayetteville district. Only the lower two floors will be used for the fashion house, equaling 16,800 square feet.

Existing Building Loops of a knit are fluid in structure yet remain strong as a unit. The relationship between these loops is one of pushing and pulling without breaking. This can be applied in spacial relationships through mass and void to create order. The design will utilize the interlocking forms, contrasting light, and complimentary color in order to reveal spacial principles of balance and hierarchy.

4. REKNIT Collaborative work spaces

Voids between forms are caused by the push and pull relationship. These create and define spaces for collaboration. Diffused light overhangs emphasizes these voids as a space making tool.

The fashion house will be used by the public for workshops, community events, and donations of garments for recycling. Recycling centers will convert unwanted garments into usable material.

Materials

The sustainable materials palette utilizes complementary colors to add contrast between forms. Fabrics and wall coverings are produced with reduced environmental impacts. Flooring remains durable while being composed of recycled aggregate for a terrazzo like finish.

Serial progression is employed to create hierarchy. Sections i l lu st rat e t he prog re s sion from public to private spaces. Changes in the ceiling height throug h prog ression creates sequential compression.

A n i nt er ior core w it hout fe ne s t r a t ion me a n s that natural light only enters from the ceiling plane. A series of apertures control the amount of light entering each space. Light f loods into the gathering space, while light is reduced in the ref lection space.

6. ARTIST RESIDENCE Transformable work / living place

At the threshold between spaces, one feels compression before entering a tall space. Hierarchy is created in the work space. Incorporating all elements into a single wall gives an active purpose to the partition.

A n elongated space is f u r ther developed by manipulating the perspective. A sloped ceiling and narrow ing hallway are revealed at the entry.

Nor thwest A rk a nsa s is a g row ing center for cycling, where leisure and professiona l contributes more than $140 million dollars to the N WA economy annually. The Razorback Greenway, a 36 -mile trail system, connects regional destinations. The Northwest A rkansas Cycling Plaza is the newest proposa l for a resource-rich destination.

The ex isting trailhead leads cyclists into the Plaza. A n additional route further engages the site and establishes a center for movement and commerce in Northwest Arkansas.

Charettes explored paper forms where triang les were joined w ith articu lated connections. Through iterative modeling, a f ina l str uctu re of acr yl ic bonded to fabric has inspired the solution for the Northwest Arkansas Cycling Plaza.

Dy namic shape and form and the a r ticu lated connections inform the circulation and the material nature of the solution.

Easy movement is provided for cyclists and pedestrians. Wayf inding strategies i nclude mater ia l a nd f loor i n g changes, variations in ceiling height, and strategic lighting placement. By manipu lating the volume and lig ht, there is a clear spatial hierarchy.
