Alex Mental, (from Russia) in EBM lovers, exclusive an interview. For the beginning, could you give us a short introduction about your music career? Thanks. Hi everyone! I’m Alex Mental from Russian futurepop band Mental Discipline! The band was founded in 2007. Firstly I decided to compose music only for myself, but later one of my friends offered me to upload several tracks in the social networks. Another period of Mental Discipline’s existence began. First live show was played in Russian city Ekaterinburg in 2008. I was afraid because I never singed on the scene before. After the concert I’ve got a lot of positive responses, it was very pleasant. Later I met my friend Stanislav Burmistrov who became the manager of the band. He helps me to organize concerts, publish interviews and broadcast MD’s music around the world. Since 2007 we made a great step according to the music career. We released Fallen Stars single and album “Constellation”, we worked with such bands like Assemblage 23, SITD, Frozen Plasma, Distain and many more. Now we work hard with a new material. So I look into the future with great positive.
Do you feel the new Futurepop Star? I think YOU are. Not yet, I guess. Now I have only one full-length album, that was successful, I must admit. Despite of this fact, there are a lot of things to do and to prove in the future.
How is your relationship with my friend Stan Burmistrtow, This is only artistic telation or Are you good friends? Anyway you are an exelent team, we can see it. Thanks! First time we met in Ekateinburg during Mesh and Asemblage 23 show. At this time Stanislav already heard my demo songs and was impressed with them. Firstly we became friends because we discovered that we have a lot of common interests besides music. Later Stanislav began to publish some Mental Discipline stuff in social networks, so one day we decided that it’s a good idea work in a team. I´m happy that were not mistaken. Now Stanslav is one of my best friend.
As young and famous musician, for you is easy to get girls? Haha Good question! You now… now I’m happy with my girlfriend, and I don’t need to use my music status to find new relationships.

You´ve shared the stage with my idol Felix Marc. Please tell us about how was this experience and how Do you think about it?, if it was important in your carrer. I know Felix personally for several years. We met several times in Moscow and Ekaterinburg after Diorama and Frozen Plasma concerts. After our first Meeting I gave him my demo-CD with my earliest tracks, including an instrumental version of Fallen Stars. He listened to it. One day I got a message from Felix with. He offered me to record vocals to this track. At this time I already had a version with Peter Rainmann vocals. So, I’ve got a plan to split these two versions in the one CDM, find the remixes and release a CD. Now I see that it was great idea. Friendship with Felix really helped me to raise Mental Discipline on the next level and I want to thank him for taking part in my project.
Do you usually have guest musician in your gigs? Nowadays yes. During the live shows I always ask my friends and promoters to help me with a back vocals and keys, because I’m the only one man of Mental Discipline who appears on stage. Stanislav refuses all my ideas about playing concerts together To tell the truth now I even don’t try to find the second person for live-performances. Maybe later I’ll return to my researches.
Tell us about your first time in Germany in September to this year. How Do you feel with it. Are you glad? Yes, it will be my first time in Germany, so I am waiting for this show with a great desire. It was my dream to held concert in Berlin and I´m very happy that this dream become true. Not so many Russian synthpop bands played their concerts there and i´m proud that I can be one of them.
About Mental Discilpline´s Lyrics: Are there Lyrics only in English? Yes, I don´t write Russian lyrics, because I think my music is interesting mostly for European and Americna fans, so I want my songs to be closer to them. But who Knows… Maybe i´ll compose several songs with Russian lyrics in future. Would you like come to Argentina? Many people know about you, are waiting for you.

Tell us about the Russian Futurerpop and Synthpop movement. How is the Scene in your country? I think the European and Russian synthpop scenes are rather different. The European scene is more developed, more people visit alternative electronic concerts, European festivals like “Amphy”, “Mera Luna”, and WGT have no analogs anywhere. But the last tendencies of Russian electronic scene development are quite optimistic. We have more Russian bands who deal a contracts with a European labels, more foreign musicians come to our country with a concerts, more people begin to interest with such music genres like synthpop and futurepop, EBM and Dark electro. So I think that the difference between Russian and European electronic scenes is reduced. Many people guess that the development of electronic scene is stopped now. But I think it’s not true. Every year we get a lot of wonderful releases which contain fresh ideas and sound. I guess that the main principle of the success for an electronic band now is not to afraid to make the experiments with the sound.
