They Met
We met in Chicago and both lived in the same neighborhood. We would see each other fairly frequently around, at the gym, at the coffee shop, etc., and would always give a friendly wave to each other. There was definitely a familiarity that we sensed, but also we just had a good old-fashioned mutual attraction. Kevin was a personal trainer at the neighborhood gym, so Buck decided to hire him, admittedly with an agenda to get to know him. There was such awesome and electric chemistry between the two that they decided to finish up the last of 8 sessions and fire each other from the professional part of their relationship, so that they
could go out on a date. It was the perfect way to get to know each other, really. There were no first date rules or pretenses, but we were just able to be authentic with one another and get to know each other in a friendly way, before we actually went on our first date.
The Proposal
Our engagement story is decidedly unglamorous, but completely fitting for us as a couple. While visiting family in Kevin’s hometown, we ended up eating a late dinner at an Applebee’s in Lakeland, Florida. We were having another of our conversations about what it would be like “when we get married” and Buck said “When
will that be?” So, we both decided in a mutual conversation that it was time to stop talking about when it will happen and make it happen. That’s how our relationship works; we view each other as equal partners, so everything stems from a mutual conversation and agreement. That isn’t to say that there isn’t spontaneity or romance in our daily lives, because there is. It’s that when it comes to the major decisions of “us,” as a couple, we both get equal say and consideration.
Although we live in Austin, TX, the beautiful beaches of Miami seem like a second home to us. Our goal is to have a second home there in the coming years. The ocean is definitely good for both of our souls, so we make our way down the South Florida Coastline as often as we can!
About Us
We have both partnered up on the business that Kevin started in 2012- Fortune Training and Coaching, www.fortunetrainingandcoaching.com to help Kevin as the business continues to grow. Buck is also the Executive Director of the Susan Poorman-Blackie Ovarian Cancer Foundation spbovariancancerfoundation.org and Kevin is joining in to help out there, because the Foundation is very close to both of their hearts.

THE BENEFITS OF HIRING A PROFESSIONAL WEDDING PLANNER
At some point in everyone’s life, the thought of getting married has come across their mind. Within the LGBT community the thought of having a wedding presents unchartered challenges in this new age of acceptance. Some thought it would never be a possibility, but there were those who have fought long and hard for marriage equality. I myself have always believed that this right should be afforded to everyone. As the mother of two gay children myself I have witnessed the strides that we have been taking towards true equality where marriage is in question, and we’ve certainly come a long way. I’m impatiently looking forward to planning my own children’s weddings in what I hope to be the near future. (Grandkids soon to follow). Weddings are a great opportunity to bring families together and to express the love and joy of a committed couple. Gay, straight, bisexual or transgender a wedding is a lot of work from day one of planning to the moment vows are exchanged. Taking on the challenge of planning your own wedding is not an easy task. Therefore, hiring a wedding planner will save you from a lot headaches and heartbreaks. Here are some of the benefits of hiring a planner. • Wedding Planners are trained professionals who are available to help you with all of your planning needs from beginning to end. They are experienced and have the knowledge to make your day come together so that you and your guest can sit back and enjoy. • Planners do all the legwork for you, from finding your venues to choosing the vendors that best fit your needs and budget. • Planners help you score the best rates available therefore saving you money. • Planners schedule all of your appointments and act as the liaison between you, your vendors and venue, all you have to do is show up for the appointments.
• Planners are there to provide a wealth of ideas, designs and information which in turn will save you time. • Planners help create and design your day, deal with all of the back end details on the day of to make sure your day is flawless. When hiring a Planner – Make sure your planner is involved with a professional organization and has professional credentials. Here are a few organizations you may want to research when choosing a planner: • National Association of Wedding Professionals (NAWP) There are various chapters nationwide, so search the chapter in your city or city you will be getting married in. • Association of Bridal Consultants also a national organization where you can find reputable consultants • Other on-line resources: Weddingwire.com, gayweddings.com, theknot.com Having good chemistry with your planner and feeling comfortable is key, since you’ll be spending a lot of time together, and they will basically become your best friend for the length of your planning, so feeling at ease is definitely a must. I highly recommend hiring a wedding planner for your special day, whether it’s full, partial or day of planning. A planner will save you money, time, and reduce stress so that you are able to truly enjoy your day. “We bring your visions to life! POP IT OR DROP IT? – That is the question! Five Considerations Before You Propose
Marriage equality is fast becoming a reality for all Americans across the country. Before you ‘pop the question’ or answer it, engage with your partner and explore these five areas that can contribute to the start of a long, healthy and happy relationship.
How important is sex and intimacy to both of you? Does one partner have a higher sex drive? Examine and discuss how will you keep your passion alive on a daily basis including date nights, sexual roles and preferences and when it’s ok to say not tonight.
1. OH, BY THE WAY…MOM’S STAYING FOR A FEW MONTHS.
4. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T WATCH ‘SCANDAL’???
Life Priority Issues Are you willing to fully welcome your partner into your life and make them a priority? What are your current life priorities in addition to your relationship? We all juggle many different priorities including work, family, friends and social life, volunteering, etc. How does committing to and nurturing your relationship with your partner rank in your priorities? This is a critical consideration, especially for couples who may have existing children and/or other family responsibilities. Write down your top 5 priorities in your life and make time to have a serious discussion to explore and examine how the dynamics of your priorities will impact your decision making as a couple.
Living and Lifestyle Issues How will you define your current living situations? Will you keep separate residences or combine? Can both of your style preferences be honored in the combined space? Does someone snore? There could be life changes down the road that you should both be aware of (having a child or a surviving parent move in). Keep track of areas of concern from who really puts the control in the remote to who hogs the blanket.
2. AN APPLE A DAY WON’T REPLACE MY VIAGRA. Health and Wellness Issues What are you and your partner’s current health concerns – physical, psychological and emotional? Full disclosure of what is going on for you and your partner is an essential step in starting off on a successful relationship. How might health and wellness concerns impact your relationship in terms of work, family, friends, social interaction and intimacy? Have a full, open discussion so there are no surprises.
5. MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING Financial and Economic Issues Money may not be able to buy happiness but it can destroy it in a heartbeat. How will you define your economic and financial well-being as a couple? What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours? Split everything 50/50? This doesn’t have to be a “one size fits all” policy. In fact, it’s healthy to decide how you will balance, barter, and bargain your way to a better budget!
3. WE’RE GOING ON SIX MONTHS WITH THAT “HEADACHE”!
While there are many other considerations that need to be explored and examined, these five areas are a good starting point to establish a solid foundation of understanding and mutual respect in core relationship areas. So grab your pad and pencil and start engaging before the engagement!
Intimacy and Sex Issues While you think you might already have this covered, we’ve all known couples who say “the magic is gone” far too soon for one or both of the partners. What is the distinction between intimacy and sex for you?

TRAVEL TRENDS With travel, the world is literally our oyster, especially as recognition of LGBT couples continues to grow. And as usual, the LGBT community is on the forefront of what’s hot in travel, whether it’s a trip for a group of friends or a honeymoon. River cruises continue to rise in popularity, combining luxury with the ability to visit off-the-beaten-path river towns in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Another hot location for cruises is the Baltic Sea, where some of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the world are among the usual ports of call, including Copenhagen. Also trending is a concept we might call escorted independent travel, where you have a local guide and activities in each city, but you do not have the sometimes back-breaking and sleepreducing requirement of traveling en masse on a tour bus. A recent itinerary was about 12 days in Cambodia and Thailand, where clients had a roughly 50-50 mix between escorted time and independent activity. Finally, the Caribbean is literally and figuratively always hot, not only for cruises but also all-inclusive resorts that provide total relaxation. So whether you are planning a wedding or just need to get away, put travel on your to-do list this year. Cruise Planners www.sailwithclass.com 855.212.7210

CAPTURE YOUR SPECIAL MOMENT
SO YOU’VE FALLEN IN LOVE AND KNOW IN YOUR HEART, THIS PERSON WILL BE YOUR LIFETIME PARTNER. YOU’RE ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A LIFE CHANGING COMMITMENT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE THAT COMMITMENT - BUT WHERE TO START? Planning a wedding can be a daunting experience. Planning a samesex wedding may hold a few more hurdles. The good news is, as more and more laws and perspectives are changing, those hurdles are slowly being overcome. Since gay couples do not have years and years of customs to fall back on, it affords us a unique opportunity to begin constructing those unique traditions. From what to wear to changing your name – this is all relatively new territory for the same-sex couple. There are a few opportunities however, for you to “borrow” or incorporate concepts from a traditional wedding. One of those long-established traditions is the desire to have your special day photographed. Your wedding day is truly historic in so many ways! A good storyteller who can deliver the intimacy of your wedding, along with excellent quality of products and services, is what most couples consider very important when selecting their photography company. We offer a few specific considerations when planning. Look at all the options your vendors offer. Each may have specific packages but they may also offer special, unique “add-ons” that can make your day stand out and give you that “wow” factor you may be looking for. Bring your own personality to your day in your own way. Sometimes that means adding a special song, writing your own vows, incorporating your favorite color, hobby or interest and even your pets.
Brainstorm and make a list of your favorite things you would absolutely love to have at your wedding. What’s most important to you? Then again, look at your budget. You’ll soon realize those two things may have to be adjusted. Decide what is most important to you as a couple. What will make your day special and what will you need to help you preserve those memories? Check your timeframe and be on time! Your day can be hectic and any delay can become stressful. Ask your family and attendants to arrive at least a half hour before your photos are set to begin, and everyone needs to be dressed and ready to look awesome! Consider video. Having footage to view, when all the planning and excitement is over, is priceless. It affords you the opportunity to view your day from a different perspective - even seeing things you may have missed! As photographers and videographers we capture those special moments. We tell your story through photos and video. We create heirlooms to treasure and works of personal art to adorn your home. How lovely it is to walk into a room, glance at a photo and think of that special person and day. Basically what it comes down to is – Love. That’s what we see - that’s what we capture – that’s the story we tell. Making a commitment to another person is life-changing, no matter if it’s a man – woman commitment or a same-sex commitment. Love, Honor and Cherish truly applies to all! AP Photo & Video www.apphotovideo.com 954.978.9776

We dealt with stress as a couple. I knew she was the only one for me, early on, but
we wanted to take our time getting to know each other and falling in love. I proposed on October 7th, 2013 on our anniversary. Melodie tried to surprise me with dinner at the Cypress Room in Midtown, but I found out where it was and informed the staff of my idea for the night. They video taped our moment, and took candid photos of our proposal. It was one of the best nights of my life. Anyone who knows Mel knows that she is definitely the more romantic one of the two of us. The rest is history. We
spent the next year and a half, planning, saving and creating the wedding our dreams. We married on March 21, 2015. We enjoy dining out a few times a week. We like cheese nights and movies on our couch. Â We love to travel to different places and spent our honeymoon in Europe. We chose the Epic for a 7-Day Mediterranean cruise that included Naples, Rome, Florence/ Pisa, Cannes, Majorca since neither of us had seen that side of the world.

THE BIG DECISION ABOUT ENTERTAINMENT “Should we hire a band or a DJ for our reception?” This used to be a long debated choice that most South Florida wedding couples had to decide when planning their special day.
with no interruptions in the fun. This format is what you should be looking for because it works perfectly every time. WHAT ARE OTHER ADVANTAGES OF HIRING A BAND?
Some bands have eliminated the need to choose one or the other by offering a band that has the advantages of both options with no extra cost. NON-STOP MUSIC KEEPS THE HIGH ENERGY GOING: Most people are aware that a high energy interactive band is much more exciting to watch than canned music with flashing lights attempting to take the place of live performance energy. The old objection in past years used to be that by hiring a DJ that will eliminate the need for breaks. With some bands, this is no longer a concern. Choose a company that includes DJ-style capabilities, so that the music is truly NON-STOP. No visible breaks EVER. The song options for your Florida wedding are now limitless. KEEP THE MUSIC GOING ALL NIGHT: Choose a band that takes extremely short break times, and that are strategically placed to seem invisible. These short, five minute rests, are usually placed during dinner so that the band is never missed. Placing the breaks during dinner time allows your band to provide softer music at conversation level. Soft jazz standards are usually the most often requested but any style of music is possible. Once it is time to party, the perfect band can keep everyone on the dance floor for hours at a time
By offering live and exciting entertainment 55 minutes each hour, the ideal band will involve your wedding guests to produce the ultimate party experience. Choose a band that doesn’t play “at” your guests, but that plays “with” them to create maximum fun. A band that is animated and interactive will jump off the stage and start singing and dancing with everyone at your party. This style of performance will be remembered by all your guests for many years. If a special request is suggested that may not be on a bands huge song list, make sure that the band you choose will be able to shift to DJ style music. PROBLEM SOLVED: You no longer have to choose between a band or DJ any longer. Having a band that is flexible and offers both types of entertainment so that you are getting everything all rolled into one. When you only get one chance to get it right, why take a chance at all.

A Timeline for Looking Your BEST on Your Big Day Your wedding will be one of the biggest, most celebrated days of your life. Since this event will be photographed and looked back on for years to come, it’s understandable that you want to look your best. Luckily, there are a variety of options to choose from – cosmetic surgery, injectables, skincare treatments, and more – to give you the appearance you’ve always wanted to have when you marry the person you’ve always dreamed of spending your life with. 6+ Months Before the Wedding If you’re thinking about having a surgical procedure, you’ve got plenty of time to find a highly recommended, board certified doctor and still have time for a full recovery before the wedding festivities start. This is also an ideal time to begin skincare treatments if you have acne, problematic skin, or just want to improve your complexion. Some individuals might want to begin laser tattoo removal at least a year ahead of time to get rid of any ink they don’t want any more before donning a wedding dress. 3-6 Months Before the Wedding If you’re still on the fence about cosmetic surgery, you’ll still have time to fully recover from most procedures before your big day if you book an appointment within this time range. We cannot stress enough that anyone considering surgery should find a board certified, reputable doctor to ensure full disclosure and confidentiality, minimal complications, and satisfying results. Typically, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, takes only about a week for recovery, but it is best to give yourself a few months to recover before adding the additional stress of wedding crunch time. If you have decided to get a facelift, it should be planned no closer than six weeks until your vows to allow for the obvious swelling to go down before being photographed at your
ceremony. Again, a few months of recovery is recommended so you’ll look and feel your best. Planning on using a lash lengthener or starting slim-down treatments like CoolSculpting? This is also an ideal time to begin so you’ll see a difference before saying “I Do.” 1-3 Months Before the Wedding If you’re considering injectables like Botox or Dysport, now is the time to have them done, as you want to leave yourself time to go back for any touch-ups. Less than 1 Month Before the Wedding Plan on getting any last injectables touched up during this time period. If you’d like to use fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane, and Radiesse, ask to have them done at least 10 days before your wedding to allow for swelling to go down. Booking a facial two weeks before the big day can help you look like a glowing groom or blushing bride. While prepping for your wedding, it’s okay to take some time to pamper yourself. Often times, brides or grooms might feel selfish for caring so much about their image, but the photos you take on your wedding day will last a lifetime – so make sure you like what you see when you look back on your big day. Can I really get a mortgage?
One of the most common questions I get asked is “is it even possible to get a loan these days?” The answer is ABSOLUTELY! Here are some specific questions and answers that may help you decide if you want to contact a mortgage professional to learn more. I have a past mortgage credit issue. Do I have to wait for 7 years to get a mortgage? Not necessarily. There are loan programs that allow for a recent credit issue such as a short sale or foreclosure. I heard that it’s virtually impossible to get a loan on a condo in Florida. Is this true? Although it is definitely more challenging than it used to be, you can get a loan on a Florida condo. It is very important that you inform your mortgage professional that you intend to purchase a condo so that she can do the necessary research to inform you if there are any limitations on the condo building. Do I have to give a 20% down payment? It depends. There are loans for first time home buyers that require only 3% down. There are also VA loans that require 0 down payment and FHA loans that require only 3.5%. There are also conventional loans with low down payment requirements. What can be the benefit of putting at least 20% down? Some loan programs require mortgage insurance for loans that have less than 20% down. This adds to the monthly payment so putting down 20% eliminates the extra cost. What is the minimum credit score to get a loan? This varies depending on the loan type and other factors but generally you would need at least a 580 score. How are rates? Rates are amazing! It is a great time to buy a property or to look into refinancing. How do I know if it makes sense for me to refinance? There are many reasons to refinance your property. You may wish to consolidate debt or cash out to help with a home improvement you have been waiting for. You may also wish to eliminate extra expenses, such as private mortgage insurance. The basic formula is to take the closing costs and divide it by amount you will be saving on your monthly payment to see how long it will take to recoup the cost of the refinance. Then you will know at what point you will start to benefit from the lower monthly payment. If you will still have the property for a longer period past that point then it could be a good option for you. Please note that all the information above is subject to change. Consult a mortgage professional to learn more. Robin J. Schwartz Robin.schwartz@caliberhomeloans.com 305.794.1864

Anyone who has lived in New York City knows that summers usually consist of picnics in Sheep’s Meadow, summer Fridays, and rooftop parties. In July 2009, Blake’s friend-of-afriend happened to bring Dan to one of those rooftop parties at Blake’s apartment. It was one of Blake’s epic parties, and he was in true form. Dan was thinking, “This guy really knows how to have a good time,” but wasn’t exactly interested in that way. Blake had other plans, and asked Dan out to dinner that week. After hours of effortless conversation, we both knew we would be more than friends. Flash forward and we are living in Miami: Blake with an exciting opportunity to work in Marketing at Carnival Cruise Lines, and Dan getting promoted within the US Department of Health and Human Services. Settled in and enjoying life, we planned our first “big vacation”
together for May 2012 - and a cruise through France and Italy. At the end of a romantic evening, Blake surprised Dan with a ring. After several months, we finally picked a date: November 8, 2014. Picking a location was not quite as easy, but after seeing the W South Beach, we were hooked. The ceremony would be on the lawn under lights, cocktails in the Grove, and the reception in the Great Room. For us, the W had it all: impeccable service, refined touches, and had just enough of a Miami vibe without being cliché. As with any wedding, the most important thing is attention to detail. Enter Barbara Amitrano of PCS Events. Barbara was our details person. From decoration to lighting, sound to setups, they did all the “little things” that actually aren’t so little. And of course, there were lots of other little things we had to manage too! We both wanted custom tuxes – Dan working with
Black Lapel (online) and Blake with Artigiano (Coral Gables). Our stationery had to reflect our black tie wedding (Wedding Paper Divas, online); and Blake’s mom designed 14 one-of-a-kind centerpieces. Pulling together a same-sex wedding couldn’t have been much easier than in Miami. Quite frankly, we expected some odd looks or pushback from vendors. What we received was totally the opposite. There were even some fun moments: While working with Ana Paz cakes, Blake was viewing cake toppers. The rep was saying (imagine your favorite Cuban-American accent), “No, you definitely don’t want THAT one! No, these all have women, hah! Ok, let’s keep looking, we will find something!” Likewise, when we first met with photographer Brett Harker. He nonchalantly brought up the fact that he just didn’t understand anyone who would be against gay marriage. Of course there were some difficult decisions to make. How would we walk into the ceremony? How would we be announced? Would there be a first dance? We were appreciative to walk through these decisions with Pastor Megan Smith from Coral Gables Congregational UCC. She reminded us that same-sex marriage is a recent phenomenon, and there aren’t yet agreed upon liturgies,
pronouns, and words. But that meant we didn’t have a fit in a mold, and that felt good. At least two-thirds of our guests were from out of town, so we wanted to make sure the entire weekend was spectacular. Miami couldn’t have been a better backdrop. Whether it was the welcome party at Townhouse Hotel or at the Boulan Hotel where we held a block of rooms, Miami delivered. The night of the wedding didn’t disappoint. Surrounded by the people who mean the most to us, we said, “I do.” We ate, we drank, we gave speeches, we danced. It was the end of one era of our lives, and the beginning of another, but we’ll probably remember it most as one epic party.

FLORAL DÉCOR FOR THE SAME-SEX WEDDING…THE FLORIST’S PERSPECTIVE A New Market…But not really Marriage equality became the law in Miami-Dade County this year on January 5 when Florida Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel lifted a stay on her ruling in a separate case striking down Florida’s marriage ban from August of last year. County clerks across the state began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples that night in anticipation of the official expiration of the stay at midnight, making Florida officially the 36th state, plus Washington, D.C., with marriage equality. Gay and lesbian couples could now legally marry statewide in Florida. This exciting news became law when the supreme court ruling made same-sex marriages a right nationwide. Since then florists have seen a big increase in the number of same-sex couples wanting to have wedding ceremonies similar to those of mixed-sex couples. However, providing flowers for same-sex couples is not totally new to most florists, who have long done this for occasional ceremonies celebrating the commitment of couples to one another. Such ceremonies have often included most of the accoutrements of wedding ceremonies, including flowers, long before they were considered legal marriages. Finding the Right Florist Do florists want to do gay/lesbian weddings? Of course! I don’t have any research-based statistics, but I’m sure that the vast majority of florists are more than happy for the opportunity to serve new customers. As with any group, there may be a small number who will decline a job on moral or religious grounds. The legal rights in this area are still being sorted out, but, irrespective of the law, there are so many good florists available that the best advice is to simply go to another one if you happen to come up against one that is not interested in serving you. Why let any unpleasantness enter into the planning for your special day when it’s easy to find a florist who really wants to help make your event wonderful? Specialty Décor Items There are many creative items available, such as handmade cake toppers at etsy.com. An Internet search will turn up many options.

The Key: Listen to the Customer Florists are business people, so listening to customer’s needs and working to fulfill those needs is what we do naturally…including when those needs are not “traditional.” A great place to start understanding the floral décor needs is with the planned attire of the couple. Two women may both want feminine, frilly dresses, and bridal bouquets to match…(These bouquets have simple, traditional styling, with white roses with baby’s breath, and lily-of-the-valley.)1 …or one or both may plan to dress in a business suit, tuxedo or sportswear. Two men may have similar, personal visions about the type and style of attire. Once the florist understands this, appropriate personal floral décor can be suggested. Knowing the planned attire of any others in the wedding party…groomsmen and bridesmaids…is also crucial. Here’s an idea for the attire when there are two grooms who both want to look appropriately dressy, complementary, but not like twins…one can wear a light gray suit and the other a dark gray suit.2 Another key question is what the couple’s vision is with regard to personal flowers. There are no rules in this area, so couples can do what feels right to them…one bride may want a traditional bridal bouquet, while her partner might want to wear a simple boutonnière. Two grooms may look sharp wearing simple red rose boutonnières.3 For fun and savings, consider DIY. For any wedding, including same-sex, many florists will be happy to sell you everything you need to enable you to make your own arrangements. Some will allow you to use their work tables and coolers to store your flowers and/or the finished arrangements, and even give you helpful advice. A few florists even allow you to sign up for classes in advance of the wedding, so learn some of the floral design techniques. You’ll need to inquire around about such services. REASONS WHY YOU NEED A PHOTO BOOTH AT YOUR LGBT WEDDING!
Your wedding is only one day of the many that will make up your marriage, but it’s the day that all your loved ones gather together to celebrate you and your long awaited union. If you’re looking to throw the party of the year, we know just the thing that will guarantee a good time – a photo booth! Who hasn’t struck a pose for the photo booths in malls and arcades? These instant printing picture machines have been reinvented to make sure your wedding is anything but boring. Here are five reasons why your guests will be thanking you for hiring a photo booth: BREAK THE ICE Consider this – you’re bringing together a group of people who don’t have anything in common other than their love for you. There will be plenty of awkward small talk but a photo booth breaks the ice and creates a relaxed atmosphere. Before you know it, complete strangers will be posing for silly pictures together. FUN FOR ALL When it comes to photo booths, age ain’t nothing but a number. Everyone from toddlers to grandparents will be lining up to smile for the camera. Photo booths strike the perfect balance between novelty and nostalgia that appeals to every generation. SHOW OFF YOUR PERSONALITY Silly hats and glasses are a no-brainer but the photo booth is also an opportunity for you to infuse your pride and personality into your wedding day. Are you a booklover? Create a backdrop out of books! Love to sail? Let your guests play dress up with themed
props! Get creative with your props, photo strip logo, and backdrop to add flavor where it’s least expected. SHARE THE LOVE Welcome to the twenty-first century where photo booths can post your pictures to social media on the spot! If you have guests who can’t attend your wedding, they can follow along on Facebook as your pictures post in real-time. Capture POD Photo Booths in Miami also has technology that lets you text and email photos to yourself or others! FAVORS Wedding favors get a bad wrap, and we understand why. No one finds a bag of coated almonds very appealing. Most often, they’re left behind on tables and your money ends up wasted! Luckily you can skip traditional favors when you hire a photo booth. Your guests will leave with handfuls of photo strips that they’ll treasure forever. Be sure to work with your photo booth vendor to customize your prints with text and graphics! To love and be loved.
After 20 years of being around my Gay and Lesbian friends. I have learned that there is no difference between a heterosexual male and female and being gay and lesbian. It’s all matters of the heart. That’s where it all starts, To Love and to be loved is a wonderful feeling. To be someone’s partner is indescribable. As a wedding planner I have learned so much about the LGBT community and to be honest I am still learning, as life is constant and ever changing. The first thing you have to do is Never Assume! Upon meeting clients, it’s always better to ask questions like, how would you like me to address you? Is it Mr. or Miss, Mrs. etc.? You would never start by asking “So who’s the bride and who’s the groom?” Learning the terminology and language is very important. LGBT – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender. Transgender is a term for someone who identifies with the opposite sex they were born as. A transgender person may or may not decide to alter their body either surgically or hormonally. They may decide to go through the transition of male to female or vice versa. To cross-dress does not mean that you are Gay or Lesbian, it’s more of a feeling of self-gratification and comfortability. When in doubt, ask questions. It is better to ask questions and show that you are willing to learn than to make a wrong assumption and disrespect or offend your client. It is always better to start thinking of it as no different than your traditional heterosexual weddings. However there are some important questions to ask that you may have taken for granted earlier. Here are just a few.
• What will your attire be, Wedding Dress and Tuxedo, 2 Wedding Dresses or 2 Tuxedos? • Will you be getting ready together or separately? • Will it be a traditional or non-traditional, Any cultural or religious integration? • Do you have the support of your family?
Do your Homework! After you’ve gotten the intricate details, it’s time to get your venue and vendors. Please take the time to do the research to find out if your venues, vendors and associates are LGBT friendly. Are they welcoming? Do they have certain allocations you may have not noted in previous visits, for example a unisex restroom. Do you know of religious sites or churches that do the ceremonies? Do you know a DJ or band that doesn’t play overly offensive music, or gender biased songs? Are your vendors supportive of LGBT? These are just some of the questions to be asked and things to find out before introducing your clients. Be relaxed. It is my experience that it gives your clients a friendlier atmosphere to work with you. It says I am open, warm, respectful and welcoming. You must be comfortable with your clients. Trust me they will know. After doing several gay and lesbian weddings myself. There is no difference from what people may call a traditional wedding it is just as enjoyable and fulfilling. HAVE FUN. Love is Love and Love doesn’t care who you are or whom you’re with. Enjoy, smell the roses. Joy Agnes Events www.joyagnessevents.com 954.245.9978

We are engaged! Now what? The first thing you do when you get engaged is to look for the venue based on your criteria. How many people will you invite? What is your budget? Start shopping on the internet to get a feeling of the style of the venue you are looking for and is the venue the right size to accommodate your wedding. Call and make an appointment to view the location and to talk to them about prices. (prices change according to the time of the year you want). Find out what is included (chairs, linens, lighting...). Ask if taxes and gratuities are included in the price which normally a big percent – this is very important! After you have decided on the venue, here is a list of other items you need to consider: food/drinks, formalwear, invitations, officiant, photography/video, flowers, music/lighting, specialty linens/décor, cake, transportation for you and your guests. Trends are very open. You want a fun party. That is what your guests will remember. Most of the times details make the party. If you are overwhelmed with concerns and your budget permits, hire a reliable wedding planner that can help ease your headaches. Check around and ask for referrals. Always choose a planner with experience. Many times the budget planner or a family creates another headache. The most important rule is whomever you decide to get for your event (vendors), always go with your first impression and the ideas they bring to the table. If the person you interview has something that you don’t like or you don’t click with them, don’t hire them. Your wedding day is very important for you as a couple and for your family and your need to have full confidence and trust your wedding planner and the event professionals you are working with. Your planner will oversee everything the way you want it, and planned it. Remember that day is one of the most important and happy days of your life or it can turn out to be a nightmare! Good Luck!! As a normal part of our day, we would both stop and get our Dunkin Donut coffee to get our day started. Well…Let me say… “I walked in for coffee and left with the love of my life!” Standing in line we began a conversation, Andy heard me speaking on the phone explaining to my friend that I recently moved to the Boca area to start a new life. At the conclusion of the call Andy said, “We all have ex-relationships.” After obtaining our coffee he invited me to sit down and chat. Let’s just say that conversation lead to falling in love and now being married to my best friend, lover, partner, and husband. We were married on January 7th. However, we wanted to help our children with a few important items in their lives first before we had our own celebration. One daughter was getting married In March. And other daughter was moving to a new location with her husband. As parents, we wanted to put our children first and make certain they were all settled in their lives and their celebrations.
We were planning on moving to our new home. Purchasing new furniture and moving to our new Condo on the beach. We needed to take care of a few other items prior to having our own celebration. It was a very busy time with many activities happening close together and we knew we needed help. We began the search and interview process but we were just not happy until…. I had to attend a meeting at the Stone Gate Bank Building 301 Yamato Road. And when I walked in to attend the meeting I had to stop in my tracks, for before my eyes was the most beautiful reception I have ever seen. I stopped and inquired about the space. Everyone was so helpful, kind and willing to answer my questions. The next evening we made an appointment and it was the best decision we ever made. We book our celebration for May 3. The staff made it so easy for us. They understood our needs and desires. The decorations by Lucy Celebration were stunning and over the top. The music by Mike Sipe’s entertainment was beyond awesome. They had everyone
up dancing from the young to the old. The sound system, the music, the DJ and lights were perfect for the room, environment and setting. Our photographer, Rumin’s Photography, was beyond exceptional. Her work gives us lasting memories forever. She was so easy to work with. The flowers from Honey Bunch were elegant. The flowers were tasteful and yet economic at that same time. The flowers added richness to our celebration. And no gay wedding celebration would be complete without a Drag Queen. South Beach’s finest drag queen, performed with the assistance and cooperation of the Pavilion Grille. It was a show stopping hit. Especially, when Dad, at a young 83, got up to dance with the Drag Queen, our guests roared! The staff at the Pavilion Grille prepared food that was so beautifully displayed, so delicious, and so perfect in every aspect. The staff constantly made sure throughout the entire evening that we were completely satisfied. They were concerned with every detail from beginning to end. The staff is most attentive to your needs before, during and after your event. And even a follow up call to make certain your expectations were met! Our guests today still talk about what a great event we had for our celebration event. The night was made complete by family, friends, coworkers, members from our parish but most of all it
was made complete by the staff of the Pavilion Grille. We have recommended this location numerous times since our party and we will continue to recommend this professional group of talented people. The night was made complete when my brother made a toast with champaign in Dunkin Donuts coffee cups that he and his wife placed at each placing seating. The moral of this love story is…you never know where love will find you! You go in for coffee and come out with the love of your life! We are truly blessed! And we are most thankful to the Pavilion Grille for making our night so special! Thank you! Our 5 Tips to a Successful Event: 1) Select vendors that you have a “gut-comfort” level with. 2) Listen attentively and take notes. 3) Ask for references, pictures, and ask lots of questions. 4) Have one point of contract that can and will be of assistance to you. 5) Enjoy! Relax! And Party! This is your day!!!

Can a dating app create a power couple? Osmany Caballero and Lior Halabi met on July 2014 while Lior was vacationing in Miami from Israel. Neither one of them were looking for love, but the physical attraction suddenly became more powerful than ever imagined. One night of passion, became days of companionship, weeks of nonstop care and admiration, which led to an amazing month of overwhelming sense of partnership and well…..soon enough love. After 2 short months, Lior swept Osmany off to Bar Harbor Shops for lunch, only to propose on one knee at Tiffany’s & CO. The
proposal was captured and viewed with over 50K followers on Facebook. The now happier than ever, engaged couple eloped to Washington DC to be wed, under the steps of the Supreme Court they said “I Do” taking a stand for equality. Within a few months later a wedding ceremony was in place, to share the love, passion and respect they have for one and other, now in front of family and friends. The amazing VOWS R’ US wedding and event planning company was just the perfect fit. In just 10 days, they organized the entire event, tuxes from Tommy’s Tuxedos and Reid Harrison Photography captured every moment. Both Giancarlo Gedler
and partner Scott Tracy arranged what seemed to be the perfect day! Their expertise to detail and sense for the LGBT community were a perfect match. On February 28th, 2015 at Briza on the Bay they gathered 150 of their closest friends and family members to announce to the world they will be “Husband and Husband.

In just shy of one year this power couple has reach dreams beyond their expectations. They both have successful family businesses; Osmany is the lead interior designer of INTERIOMAN DESIGN. Lior has founded a Public Relations Company, The JEWBAN BEAGLE that specializes in the LGBT community, managing talent, like their Drag Queen/ Wedding Officiator, Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride 2015, Athena Dion. Trending Cake Décor After 14 years of operating and owning the bakery business in South Florida and being the 3rd generation of the biggest bakery in Havana Cuba and San Juan Puerto Rico, Beatriz Otero has involved her beloved business Elite Cake Creations in all the new trends that nowadays have been inspired by different styles and fashion that can be called “edible pieces of art.” The most important aspect of designing an incredible wedding cake is to represent the customers dream cake into an edible masterpiece. At Elite Cake Creations, we have noticed as a trend that some of the wedding cakes still maintain the classic look that is typically called a “traditional wedding cake” even now for same-sex weddings. A slight trend has increased in adding some vivid colors to the cake or some unique detail that offsets the cake but at the same time resembles the wedding couple’s style and personalities. Beatriz Otero, as a master cake designer, states most wedding cakes reflect the couple’s personality and style, no matter their sexual orientation. The only difference would be the cake topper that now includes same-sex toppers, such as Mr. & Mr. or Mrs. & Mrs. and for the more classic personality, two grooms or two brides or any other creative topper especially made for the couple. Some of the cake décor that are now trending for the same-sex weddings are… RUFFLES Some ruffles can be done in buttercream, however the fondant ruffles can be molded to show some beautiful detailing with more delicate effect resembling real ruffles. NAKED CAKES Naked Cakes are increasing rapidly in popularity. Most wedding cakes are usually covered with buttercream icing or fondant, but the naked cake has no buttercream or fondant on it. This naked look, sometimes with a minimal amount of buttercream icing, enhances the flower arrangement or fruit selection as decoration. For this type of cake, the season provides a big influence for the decoration as far as available seasonal fruits and flowers. This beautiful style creates an appeal of the cake to be in its natural state. My favorite part of the naked cake is designing the combination of different fillings and toppings available like caramel, honey, drizzled chocolate, berries and so much more fun things to do with the cake.
STORY TELLING CAKE. Beatriz indicates this cake style is becoming a famous style for our new same-sex couples. Even our wedding cakes can help tell a couple’s journey to their magic day. Each tier depicts a piece of the couples’ life story captured with such emotion by the cake designer and portraying their love through the masterpiece wedding cake. GO REALLY BIG Huge wedding cakes are impressive, amazing and always the talk of every wedding party. These huge cakes are not for budget conscious couple, but it becomes priceless when the final product is delivered and the couple sees it for the first time. LACE & PEARLS CAKE Lace and Pearls give any wedding cake an elegant look. Popular colors that are currently used are ivory, blush, or light teal as the traditional vintage look which is also maintaining its popularity. There are many ways to incorporate the lace and pearls onto a wedding cake, the placement and final look of the cake will always depend on the couple’s style and personality. OMBRE CAKE Ombre cakes are extremely popular right now. Ombre, a French word, means gradual shading of color. For example if your wedding color is purple, the Ombre style cake allows you to incorporate purple from darkest shade, up to the lightest shade of purple. You can do this with any color. Most Ombre cakes start with the darkest shade of color at the bottom tier and gradually lightens up to top tier, but you can choose to start with the lightest color on the bottom tier that gradually darkens up to the top tier. Beatriz will even extend the Ombre effect into the color of the inside of the cake just to create a fun surprise for the guests when the cake is served. Your wedding cake will be the center of your wedding reception. The eyes of all your guests will be captivated by the wedding cake, so when choosing a cake design, you have to make sure that it not only matches the style and theme of the wedding and reception, but that it is a proper reflection of you as a couple. Beatriz Otero’s creations are from the simplest to the most extravagant type of wedding cake that will never be forgotten. The cake is for two people in love, not matter who they love. When visiting our showroom you will be met with all the warmth of our Elite staff and the sweet smell of freshly baked cake, feel welcomed and enjoy delicious cake tastings. In addition to owning and operating Elite Cake Creations, Beatriz says that “it is not only sugar that is the principal ingredient of our cakes, it is “LOVE.” Let Elite Cake Creations create a unique and memorable experience for your big wedding day. Nationwide marriage equality is here. Learn your rights and look before you leap! After a long battle, both the State of Florida and the Supreme Court of the United States have finally determined that our relationships are legitimate and worthy of recognition, bringing uniformity to what was a hodgepodge of marriage rights that varied state-to-state. Now our commitments must be recognized nationwide. There is so much reason to rejoice. But before you drop on one knee, take a moment to soberly consider the consequences. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the excitement over the victories we have achieved. But racing to the altar has never been a great idea, not for straight couples and not for LGBT couples, either. Marriage is not something to enter into lightly. It’s a binding contract with automatic rights on divorce or death. Just because we can now freely say “I do” doesn’t mean we should go there. And certainly not before asking a few simple questions: • What happens to your kids, your assets, your property, if you split? If you pass away? • Can a creditor try to come after you for your spouse’s debts? And what can you do about it? • What will the income tax consequences be to marrying? If you care enough to enter into the very solemn act of marriage, treat it with the respect it deserves and exercise care. Perhaps a prenuptial agreement is appropriate to modify the default of the law, which says your spouse gets half of the marital assets and you are jointly responsible for each other’s debts. Don’t be afraid to discuss these difficult topics with your partner — and with a lawyer. Some of the legal steps you needed to take before marrying should still be undertaken in an abundance of caution. We are a transient society and until there is both worldwide marriage recognition and zero
risk of encountering homophobic or ill-informed authorities here in the U.S., it is critical to take “belt and suspenders” approaches. For example, some folks seem to think that a birth certificate alone is sufficient to establish parental rights because of the presumption of legitimacy when a child is born into a marriage. However, birth certificates are only evidence of parental rights, not conclusive proof. In order to solidify parental rights, the consensus among attorneys working with LGBT families is that you should secure an adoption judgment. A stepparent adoption is more affordable than a second parent adoption because no home study is needed, and you’ll get an irrebuttable court order that’s given full faith & credit everywhere in addition to that birth certificate with both of your names on it. We’ve already had a few cases finding that the benefit of the parental presumption was meant to protect biological parents and so it does not apply to a parent like a non-gestational lesbian mom who lacks that connection. Why risk it? Also, don’t assume that since Florida recognizes your marriage, you do not need estate planning documents anymore. We currently have 21 countries worldwide with marriage equality and several jurisdictions in the US who are being dragged kicking and screaming toward equality. That means if you find yourself in the wrong place, you will be considered legal strangers to one another and could be turned away when attempting to assert your rights. Imagine visiting some other state or country when your beloved gets injured and you are told you cannot be by his bedside regardless of how married you say you are. So be sure to have a will and advance directives in place, not only for travel purposes but also for clarity as to your intentions. You might be sure who should be named the primary decision-maker and beneficiary of your assets, but you also want to name an alternate for both. Also, any charitable goals you have would need to be spelled out in writing as well. So let’s say that after your wife dies, you want your assets to pass to a non-profit organization working for full equality for all LGBT people, that needs to be specified in a will or trust. Learn your rights, and look before you leap! Elizabeth F. Schwartz, P.A. www.sobelaw.com 305.674.9222
