A WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
S
o, here we are, Phoenix Fashion Week, ‘the little engine that could! The underdog! The one everyone counted out!’ Our team has heard our business described this way many times over the years. Then I look at what an effective business model we have build against very steep odds, and I can’t help but say it is simply remarkable. From inception, Phoenix Fashion Week has been a community effort, focused on pushing Arizona fashion forward. Now, based on 3 pillar ideals of education, year-round fashion-themed events and charitable partnerships, Phoenix Fashion Week is gaining rapid acclaim for our innovation into the Southwest. That sounds so ‘official’ right? In a nutshell, we are building successful fashion brands from the ground up that can stay in Arizona and hire the many levels of future fashion professionals that reside here. How do we do that? By slowly building a passionate team that wanted to create something that did not exist. We are the only fashion week that actually focuses on ‘Bridging Designers & Buyers.’ In theory that sounds great, but why do we do it? We figured that if a brand gained sales through our fashion network of retailers, fashionistas, and bloggers, that we would always be in demand. I can tell you that everyday the team at Phoenix Fashion Week strives to make this moving target, reality. So now you know our secret, the rapid growth of Phoenix Fashion Week has come from our community and a passionate team. The team’s dedication is where the hidden success truly lives, by holding every team member to a high standard of operation and effectiveness, no matter their title. Phoenix Fashion Week offers real world, on-the-job training that has build confidence and effective skill sets within our team that we all use in every aspect of our lives. That high standard has led to successful brand partners

DESIGNERS’ DREAMLAND PHOENIX FASHION WEEK HELPS EMERGING DESIGNERS’ DREAMS COME TRUE Photographed by Dan Tabor and Phoenix Fashion Week Team
F
or the fourth year, Phoenix Fashion Week has welcomed talented emerging designers from all over the Unites States to show off their work and give us a taste of their fashion inspirations. These designers not only get the opportunity to showcase their collections but also learn quality ways to strengthen their business skills and grow their brand through various challenges. For many of them, Phoenix Fashion Week has been a stepping stone to their successful futures. The emerging designer challenge, which was presented by Zappos.com, The Art Institute of Phoenix and Balluun last year, started four months before the actual fashion show took place. During these months, the designers learned everything about the business of the fashion world, from how to write press releases, how to create a financial plan and how to showcase their best assets within their brand. The winner of the challenge also received a prized package valued at over $10,000. For last year’s winner, Bri Seeley, one of her best assets that stood out was the amount of detail and fine construction of her collection. “I’m glad that the details stood out in this collection,” Seeley said. “[Details] are really important. Most days I am a perfectionist, but I found running a business you almost can’t be.” Seeley, who holds a master’s degree in fashion design, has been building her brand for over six years. So, naturally she was well prepared for the challenges. Since the show, Seeley has showcased her collection at LA Fashion Week and her brand was selected by Zappos.com to be sold exclusively in 2013 on their global e-commerce platform. “It feels like all of my hard work and ridiculous hours are finally paying off! I’m excited to have the opportunity to showcase the brand on a larger scale and reach a huge amount of new customers,” Seeley said about her opportunity. Along with Seeley, 2012 emerging designers Designer: Silvia Bours

JHaus and Paulie Gibson were also selected by the Zappos team. “The mix of denim, womenswear and menswear spoke to us,” Natasha Pace of Zappos said. “The Zappos customer is ‘everyone’. They have varied interests, tastes, etc….Phoenix Fashion Week gave us a large pool to choose from.” Jennifer Hauseman, designer and creator of JHaus, debuted her line on Zappos on February 1st. Since Phoenix Fashion Week, she has showcased at LA Fashion Week and was also invited by Elle Magazine to New York Fashion Week. “Phoenix Fashion Week kept us on task and prepared us … It’s really exciting to be on Zappo’s and to know all that hard work paid off,” Hauseman said. “At JHaus, we admire the company culture that Zappos has created, and we are excited to be apart of it.” Gibson, who was noted by the Zappo’s team as a talented designer who’s menswear line was just “icing on the cake,” feels this opportunity is one of a lifetime. “It feels surreal,” the St. Louis based designer said. “I’ve been shopping on Zappos for years and to now know that my apparel will be available to the world on the biggest Internet retailer in the world, that’s beyond

huge. I’m so grateful, it’s a dream come true.” Though 2012 was a very successful year, 2011 also gained big success. Silvia Bours, based out of Mexico, came to Phoenix Fashion week as an emerging designer. Shortly after the show, her line was seen everywhere. In April of 2012, Bours was featured as the guest of the evening at the Fashion Group International- Arizona Chapter’s annual Fall Trend Report. FGI, according to Phoenix Fashion Week Executive Director Brian Hill, is the leading fashion trade organization in the world. Bours’s collection was further seen on Phoenix Fashion Week 2012 “Save the dates” flyer as well as the front cover of the Phoenix Fashion Week program and the headlining image on the front screen of the show. Bours then returned to the fashion week in 2012 as an established designer. She was also officially announced as the first designer featured on Zappos digital style magazine iPad app. According to Bours, there is a lot more to come. “I received more media exposure that I had before, and the experience helped me acquire more clients and new projects,” Bours said. “Brian Hill is also helping me to achieve bigger plans, so stay tuned!” - Lauren Pfingstag and Eboni Lacey

he Fashionably Pink Celebrity Show benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® Phoenix kicked off Phoenix Fashion Week for the 4th consecutive year on Wednesday, Oct. 3. To emphasize the importance of this show, Phoenix Fashion Week added another day to their calendar, as the show took place at the Musical Instrument Museum, with the three days following at Talking Stick Resort. “This is the fourth year we are raising much needed awareness and funds for Susan G. Komen,” Executive Director Brian Hill said. I am very proud of the work Phoenix Fashion Week is doing for the breast cancer survivors in making them the stars of the runway.” For the first time ever, Phoenix Fashion Week welcomed Susan G. Komen for the Cure Founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker, as the evening’s honored guest! The night’s supporting sponsors also included Bank of

It’s important to our team to be out in our local communities supporting events aimed at helping men and women learn about Breast Cancer Awareness.” Bank of America is another returning sponsor this year and was thrilled to continue their support of Breast Cancer Awareness and Fashionably Pink. “Breast cancer has touched all of us in some way – family members, co-workers, and friends – and Bank of America is proud to be able to help promote the Susan G. Komen cause through the availability of Pink Ribbon Banking products,” Harlan Clark, a Bank of America senior vice president for the Susan G. Komen
Partnership, said. “In addition to our product suite, we are pleased to serve as a Race for the CureSurvivor Program Co-Sponsor and the Presenting Sponsor of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Series. The Phoenix Fashion Week’s Fashionably Pink event creates an avenue for us to extend our reach and bring awareness of the partnership to a new audience and we are extremely proud to be associated with the event”. The evening will begin with a glamorous cocktail party at 7 p.m., featuring a red carpet entrance for photo opportunities, mingling with local tastemakers, live music and a charitable silent auction featuring fabulous vacations to New York City, the Grammys and more, all provided by Charity Fundraising Packages. The “Pinked Out” fashion show featured an amazing lineup of celebrities, including 104.7 radio hosts JohnJay and Rich and Kyle, America’s Next Top Model Brittany Brown, and survivors alike who graced the runway in their pink-inspired ensembles, created by many of Phoenix Fashion Week’s emerging and established designers. ”People think life on the runway is easy. I’m here to tell you, it’s not easy! Being a fashion icon is tough, but I do it! The cause is why I do it…I look good in pink, for the people!” JohnJay Van Es said. Being a Fashionably Pink veteran, 104.7’s Kyle Unfug looked forward to working her runway walk every year. “I was so honored to be a part of such a positive event for such an incredible cause that affects women everywhere,” he said. The week also welcomed back Fox 10 morning host Kristin Anderson, who had some serious runway moves last year for Fashionably Pink. “The ‘Fashionably Pink’ show is the event I wait for every year… I am hardly a model, but I LOVE walking in the show because the energy is off the charts! The survivors who strut the runway are so inspiring – every year it gets better and better. I’m honored to walk beside them, and I wouldn’t miss this show!” Phoenix Fashion Week works hard year after year to help our local breast cancer survivors to feel like true heroes of the runway. Pamela McCall of Mayo Clinic is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the show again this year and offers up some words of wisdom for other survivors. “As far as we know, you are the only one you ever made or that will ever be made, the only you who will pass this way in the Universe. So live life, love God, and

do you! Be happy!” She exclaimed. Another of our Fashionably Pink veteran favorites was 22-year breast cancer survivor Sharon Carlson. “By putting on this event, Fashionably Pink is showing everyone how important Breast Cancer Awareness is to the fashion community. By raising funds for research and prevention, they are helping to find an end to breast cancer and to give woman all over the state a chance to live.” Perhaps one of the most anticipated looks of the evening is a show stopping pink gown that closed the show by one of the most exciting designers on the global fashion stage, Dubai-based Furne One, whose creations have been seen on Heidi Klum, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez. The evening’s glamorous after party followed the show.

One surprise was a special appearance from America’s Next Top Model star Raina Hein. The Cycle 14 contestant fiercely walked the runway wearing one of the night’s hottest numbers -- a fully sequined red, white and blue dress from established designer Furne One’s collection. This dress gained the audience’s applause and yells from the minute Hein’s sparkling gray high-heeled boot touched the beginning of the runway.

“Yes, fashion buyers will still go to New York or Europe,” admits Brian Hill, director of Phoenix Fashion Week. “But we want them to stock their stores with our designs too.”
There is at least one success story, though. After Silvia Bours showed her designs at last years’s Phoenix Fashion Week, her prom-style dresses were picked up by Zappos.
PHOENIX FASHION WEEK PROVIDES SEMINAR SESSIONS FOR ASPIRING FASHION DESIGNERS
PRESENTED BY:
Photographed by Mikel Photography
P
hoenix Fashion Week presented The Business Of Fashion Seminar Series that took place Oct. 4 through Oct. 6 at Collins College and The Talking Stick Resort. Each seminar was presented by industry professionals who have found success in their chosen area. Audience members learned tips of the trade in areas such as launching a business, retailing, marketing, financing, branding, merchandising, social media in fashion, styling, the effect of trends and also got a chance to sit in and ask questions of fashion pros while given all kinds of insider info during their Fashion Roundtable. Up until very recently it was pretty easy to get a job in retail. Many stores would hire you with no prior experience. A lot of us went to work as sales associates or in display, right out of high school. It was a low paying job, but a way to get into the industry without going to a secondary school. We just did the tasks we were assigned, worked our way up and for many of us in previous decades, it worked out well. Some of us, who stayed with it, were able to work our way up to management positions. The downside, though, was that many of us in retail were viewed as uneducated, and as having taken a job in retail sales because we couldn’t get better jobs. A misconception, to be sure. Well, fashionistas, it looks like those days are gone and that image is changing. Like so many other things in the fashion industry, retail is endeavoring to change that image. Recently, Andrew Asch wrote an article for the California Apparel News, based on an interview with Jamie Novick, independent consultant for Rancho Santa Margarita, California based consulting firm, “The
Next Step Retail Solutions.” “There’s been a shift in the quality of people”. Novick said. “There are fewer jobs. The expectations of the consumer are higher. They want someone that is trained.” “For entry level positions,” Novick said, “specialty retailers often seek to hire someone working toward a degree, who is also planning a career in retail.” We all know the industry is evolving. The way we shop is changing. Stores are going out of business. Those remaining, and new stores as well, have elected to work with smaller numbers of staff members than they might have a couple of years ago. The same is true for designers and manufacturers. However, customer service, product knowledge and an understanding of business are becoming increasingly important in all areas. Phoenix Fashion Week’s seminars are a great opportunity to gain insight. Phoenix Fashion Week’s seminars are open to students, educators and fashion focused individuals, as well as industry professionals. For tickets, visit www.businessoffashion2012. eventbrite.com. Discounted tickets for seminars are available to students. For the discount code contact liz@phoenixfashionweek.com, or melissa@ phoenixfashionweek.com. Some of their sparkling, dynamic wardrobe that have been seen at shows all over the world were designed by Phoenix Fashion Week headliner Furne One.
“We want to make it different,” Furne One Creative Director, Stylist and U.S.A. Representative Alexis Lerma said. “We want something that is outside of the box.” At Saturday night’s 2012 finale, Furne One’s 31-piece “Best Of ” collection shocked the crowd from the moment the blue lights deemed and first look’s sparkle was seen on the runway. According to Furne, the “best of ” collection “consists of celebrity iconic pieces, as well as favorites from each past collection that are also favorites among published editorials and press.” “ Phoenix Fashion Week Executive Director Brian Hill explained that having Furne One as a headliner was a vital opportunity that would truly put the week on a whole new element. “In wanting to take Phoenix Fashion Week to the next level, we sought out a designer that was already there,” Hill said. “Furne One is the real deal. I am still amazed at the quality, production, and vision of this true artist.” The designer’s masterpieces have been seen at the Video Music Awards, on many supermodels and famous celebrities and also at numerous international fashion weeks. In addition to working with crystals and studs, Furne One also believes in pieces that enhance the female figure. Lerma included that the brand focuses on the shape and femininity of the woman as his pieces celebrate the curves of the body. “If you see the collection it’s like ba-boom; boobs, (butt) and everything,” Lerma said. “It brings back the whole 50’s vibe, bringing the glamour and sparkle and richness to the department.” Furne One and his team also believe in giving back as Furne designed a gown for Phoenix Fashion Week’s Fashionably Pink Show in support of the Susan G.

He recently opened his first U.S. boutique in the Los Angeles area and plans to continue expanding within the next year. Furne explains on the Amato Couture website that success is all about being meticulous, reliable and working industriously. n 2011, we welcomed young talent, Brittany Brown, into our Model of the Year Competition. Having modeled since a young age, Brown did incredibly well and showed undoubted promise in a cut-throat industry. This was confirmed when Brown announced shortly after the show that she was a Top 13 contestant on Cycle 19 of America’s Next Top Model: College Edition. Brown, a Gilbert-native, has always been a huge fan of the show, but you may be surprised to hear she actually auditioned for the show before, but barely missed the cut due to her being under the age of 18. However, she believes the experience was “meant to be”, as she “felt more ready than ever” to audition again. The process happened quickly, as she went from submitting her audition packet to flying out to LA, making the top 30 and…the rest is history. “It was like a dream come true,” Brown said when she was chosen as Top 13. “I just lost my breath when Tyra announced my name. My reaction was pure excitement and a ready to go attitude…I knew I had to put my game face on.” On the show, Brown was portrayed as a Disney loving, sweet girl which comes as no surprise considering this Chandler-Gilbert Community College student is accepted in the Disney College Program and loves Lion King! In fact, one of her favorite quotes to live by comes from Walt Disney himself: ”All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” “I really learned to stay true to myself,” Brown said. “It

strengthened my confidence even more and taught me to remember who you are and where you come from.” In addition to being on the show, Brown soon passed her success on to her little sister, Madison, who was named as the 2012 Model of the Year. Madison won a signed contract with The Agency Arizona. Now, both the Brown sisters are just waiting for what’s next to come in the big fashion world. -Lauren Pfingstag

FROM LOCAL TO LEGENDARY MODELS COMPETE FOR MODEL OF THE YEAR Photographed by Style Image Studios and Stella Crowl
W
ith each new year of Phoenix Fashion Week, so too begins our various competitions, including Model of the Year, sponsored by Smartwater. Meant to support and nurture our local talent, this competition has achieved not only immense growth and range, but most importantly, numerous success stories for our models involved. This July hundreds of hopeful models gathered at Axis Radius for an open casting call for the Phoenix Fashion Week “Smartwater Model of the Year Contest.” After the casting call, the long list of participants was narrowed down to 40 local models. Each of these models were seen numerous times on the runway, wearing both established and emerging designers’ looks, as well as appearing in videos, photo spreads, numerous magazines and many other media outlets. Phoenix Fashion Week TV host Brittany Brannon spent a lot of time working with the models and explains how much work, time and effort the actual competition and event takes along with the work the Phoenix Fashion Week team also does. “Hands down [it takes] lots of work,” Brannon said. “No sleep. This past week every one of us on the team has been getting about two hours of sleep. We get here about 2:30 in the afternoon and we go to about 1 or 2 a.m. But at the end of the day, you have the best experience.” Due to all the time spent together, Brannon grew close with a lot of the models. Some of her personal favorites include Madison Brown, Kimberly Lopez and Nick Koester. “Those were the ones I got to know the most,” Brannon said. “But I have to say all the girls and guys were just great to work with,” the TV host and model said. “I’m really kind of sad it’s over because I had such a great time.” Throughout the competition, the models had

In the social media challenge, social gurus were given the opportunity to vote on their top pick for the best model. The model with the most social media votes won the challenge. The social media challenge winner was Maureen Montagne. Finally, after months of anticipation and preparation and numerous blogs, tweets and Facebook posts, the model of the year was chosen at the week’s after party held in the Showroom of the Talking Sticks Resort. This year’s winner was none other than Madison Brown. “When he called my name I didn’t know if I should cry. I was just frozen solid,” Brown said after her big win. “It was a mix of emotions. It was awesome.” Brown, only 17 years old and just a junior in high school, hopes this win will be one of many as she focuses on furthering her career as a professional model. Along with the title, Brown won the grand prize of a signed contract with The Agency Arizona. Brown shared that this win was very sentimental to her as she was able to

INSPIRE FASHION FASHION STUDENT WINS T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST
W
ith the success of last year’s debut, Phoenix Fashion Week’s Inspire Fashion Contest returned to award another $1,000 fashion design scholarship to a deserving local student. Created for talented high school seniors or college students in a fashion degree program, this scholarship stemmed from Phoenix Fashion Week’s continued educational push to support local talent. Students were asked to submit their top t-shirt design that creatively incorporated the Phoenix Fashion Week logo/name via a finished t-shirt sample or a computer graphic image. “Each year, we want to inspire young fashionistas to their dream to be a designer. The t-shirt design challenge does exactly that by highlighting the most talented student t-shirt designer in AZ, producing that shirt and taking it to market to sell at Phoenix Fashion Week while supporting their education with a $1,000 scholarship,” Executive Director Brian Hill said. After much deliberation over the top three designs selected from Arizona, Phoenix Fashion Week is thrilled to award Mesa Community College Fashion Design student, Ashley Cooper, as the winning t-shirt design in the Inspire Fashion Contest! “This contest gives an opportunity for students who are just entering the fashion industry a way to showcase their designs to the public and industry at large. For this particular design, I drew inspiration from the current trend of personalized fashion sketches, mostly seen in watercolor that can be found all over pinterest, etsy and the blogging world,” Cooper said.
