User Manual This short introduction explains some techniques and information that will be helpful to make the best use of a MegaZine3 book. Working with a book is mostly about     

flipping a page jumping to a specific page work with the content (start a video, zoom into an image or page, follow links, …) searching for content printing or downloading selected pages

How to flip a Page There are several options to turn the page or select another page Navigation Bar Buttons previous and next Page

Going one page backward

or

forward

How to drag a Page You can click with the left mouse button into the edge or corners or of the book and drag the page with the mouse while the left mouse button remains clicked. This will initiate a smooth drag and turn of a page. The cursor changes shape while you click and drag the page. When you moved the page over a certain portion of the book, the page will flip. If you did not drag the corner far enough from the starting position, the page will return back to the starting position and not flip. Click the Corner of a Page A short left click with the mouse into the sensitive area at the left or right edge of a page will initiate an automatic page flip. Instead of holding the mouse button down to smoothly drag the page, you do a short left click and the page turns automatically without further dragging. You can do several clicks in a row, and several pages will turn together, one after the other.

Click into theFront Edge of the Book If the book is thick enough and the feature to show front edges is enabled, you also can click into the front edge of the book and the pages will flip accordingly.

A click into the middle of the front edge will jump to a page in that range of the book This way also big books can be browsed quickly.

How to select Pages There are also several ways to select a dedicated page, without flipping through the book page by page. Using the Navigation Bar Buttons and the Page entry Field

Enter a page number

Jump to the first or last page directly

Using the Page Buttons (“bubbles”)

Click on a page button to open that selected page

Slide Show If you want to browse the book with automatically flipping the pages, start the slide show clicking the Slide Show button. Start a slide show. A second click pauses the slide show.

How to zoom into a Page To see the details, or have an easier read, there are some ways to adjust the size of the book to the needed size and resolution. Not all features are enabled with every book, so some of the presented options might not work by design of the book. Liquid Scaling If zooming is allowed and liquid scaling enabled, the size of the book will adjust to the window the book was started in. Resizing that window will resize the book.

The size of the navigation bar remains the same, whereas the book scales with the window. Zoom in and zoom out Using the Navigation Bar Buttons Using those two buttons the zoomscale can be increased (zoom in) or decreased (zoom out) with every click, up and down to the configured limits.

MegaZine3 User Manual and Introduction Draft: 1-3-0 Version: V2.0.x as of Feb 18, 2011

Using the Mouse Wheel After you at least clicked once into the book or on a button in the navigation bar (to give Flash the focus), the mouse wheel can be used to zoom in and out alternatively to the zoom buttons. Scrolling forward zooms in, and scrolling backward zooms out. Remark: After you selected an individual zoom level zooming in or out with the buttons or the mouse wheel, the liquid scaling (automated adjustment to the browser window size) will not work any longer; to not overwrite your selection. If you want to use liquid scaling again, just refresh the browser. The Gallery If enabled in the book, selected images can be shown in a higher resolution. For that an alternative file must be defined for that image, usually with a higher resolution. A click on either the spy glass at the edge of the image or into the image if the mouse cursor turns into a spy glass will change into gallery mode, and the alternative file with the higher resolution image is loaded; in most cases in full screen mode.

Here a lightbox is used instead of showing the image in full screen mode. Remark: In gallery mode no keys can be used; not accepted by Flash. So some options are not available like:   

Entering page number enter a search string and using search the page flip function

MegaZine3 User Manual and Introduction Draft: 1-3-0 Version: V2.0.x as of Feb 18, 2011

Only the provided buttons of the gallery window will work

With these alternative buttons it is e.g. possible to move forward to the next or backward to previous image in the gallery. If the size of the image is bigger than the resolution of the monitor, only a fraction of the image is shown and you can drag the image with the mouse to change the visible section (clipped part of the image). You can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel or the zoom buttons. You can move the clipped section with the mouse be either a mouse move or a click and mouse drag. You also can click into the preview window and move the little thumb image to select the visible area.

How to search for a Combination of Words In case a search window is available, you can search for text phrases in a comfortable way providing key words.   

enter the keyword into the search input box hit return to see the search results click on the search result in the search list to go to the related page

To reduce the number of hits you can combine key words in the search input field using the “+” and “-“ sign as operators for  

+ -

all key word with a leading “+” must be present on a page. all key words with a leading “-“ must NOT be present on a page.

A search selection like this one will only report hits for those pages where:  

asul AND button are both present on the same page AND navigation is NOT present on that page

Copyright © 2010 VservU GmbH All rights reserved

10

MegaZine3 User Manual and Introduction Draft: 1-3-0 Version: V2.0.x as of Feb 18, 2011

Instead of 43 hits as with asul as the only key word, that combination reports only 7 hits. All found key words are marked on the pages.

How to print selected Pages If you want to print some of the pages of the book, you can do so if the print feature is enabled and the print button shows up in the navigation bar: A hit on that button opens an overview window with thumbnails of the pages around the open page, with the opened two pages already preselected. With a click on the thumbnail you can select or deselect pages. The 2 left/right arrow buttons are used to show the next or previous selection of pages. The button on the top right goes back to the book without printing. After a click on the button at the bottom on the right the print dialog will open, a printer can be chosen and the selected pages will be printed.

MegaZine3 general Concept and Examples What is MegaZine3? MegaZine3 is a complete framework to show content in a very natural way as 3D-Book. This also is called PageFlip or flipping book technology and making use of Adobe Flash technology. Published books, i.e. books made available on a server, can be viewed by everybody with internet access and the Flash Plugin installed. Most users (>99%) can view books immediately. Those without installed plugin can download the plugin for free; a link is provided in case MegaZine3 detects Flash is not installed. Only exception: after Steve Jobs decision to not support Flash on iPhones and iPads, those users are excluded; for the time being. What does it look like You can browse our online book to get a first impression; please click the screenshot below.

What can be published as flip Book? Everything that is printed on paper can be viewed online as flip book also. And more: Books, photo books, manuals, newspapers, documentation, newsletters, tutorials, magazines, journals, reports, documentation, calendars, maps, digitized old books … Multimedia content as video, audio, animations can be integrated and users can interact with the book: flip pages, branch to pages, search, print, follow links, send emails, zoom in/out… Some advantages of Online books include: Interactivity, fast updates, integration of multimedia content, flexible design, integration with other software, automatic slide shows Advantages of real books are: The real feeling, no device needed, no power consumption, still easier to personalize like making notes, attach real things, highlight areas, add special covers, …) Although more and more of these features will be realized for the flip book also. Bookmarks e.g. are already supported, and adding notes and highlight areas are other features planned for future releases. To see some first real life examples (just a small selection, more examples can be found at the end of the book in the chapter

What are the main Features? Please see our complete Feature List for details. Here a short list of the main features:     

3D like page flip animation, shadows, configurable graphical interface, thumb preview Presentation of images, video, text, animation, sound, effects Support of internal and external links Slideshow, zoom, search, print, bookmarks, sidebar, full screen Multilingual support (localization)

How does it work? MegaZine3 makes heavily use of Adobe Flash and the related programming language ActionScript3 (AS3). But you do not need to know about all this to create a book. In general only one text file needs to be configured, which defines all elements of the flip book in a formal way. This kind of configuration using “tags”, elements, parameter, … is a common approach and the type of file is called XML (for extended markup language). Such files usually have the extension .xml. The MegaZine3 configuration file has the extension .mz3, although it is a pure xml file. Main reason is to avoid confusion and to always know which files are MZ3 configuration files. There is another type of configuration file available to modify the design of the GUI; something for the advanced users. Those xml files have the extension .asul (for actions script user language).

MegaZine3 User Manual and Introduction Draft: 1-3-0 Version: V2.0.x as of Feb 18, 2011

Talking about “mz3” and “asul” files clearly differentiates between the different kind of configuration files, whereas calling both just “xml” files could create confusion. There are script files available that support in generating MZ3 files, like the automatic PDF – MZ3 conversion. Those are discussed in separate tutorials. Configuration via an XML file Knowledge of FLASH or ActionScript3 is not required to build a MZ3 book (although it does not harm -). The configuration of MZ3 books is done by editing XML1 files: the megazine.mz3 files. Each book has its own related megazine.mz3 file, which defines how a book looks like:   

Number of chapters Number of pages Page content

The megazine.mz3 file is the core file that defines the behavior of book. All content, and how that content will be presented, is defined in the megazine.mz3 file MagaZine3, the framework of AS3 software provided as the “PageFlip engine”, interprets that MZ3 file, creates the book and manages all user interaction. It acts as the interface between the user and the browser/Flash. General structure of a Book To understand how to create the megazine.mz3 file, it is important to understand the general “philosophy”: Like a real book aMegaZine3 book is composed of a book with chapters and pages. That structure (book – chapter – pages) also is reflected in the structure of the megazine.mz3 file. On a page your content (images, text, video) is placed. The content is described by elements like:      

Img Vid Snd Area Txt Nav

Images (.jpg, .png, .swf) Video (.flv, .f4v, Sound an area, e.g. used for links Text (some HTML formatting is supported) Navigation (Table of Content, ToC)

Each of these elements can be controlled by general attributes (i.e. the same attributes for all elements) or specific attributes (specific to single elements). Additionally dynamic attributes are used for configure i.e. different languages (localization) and scaling (zoom). This will be discussed in other tutorials. 1

A general overview and many technical details can be found in the Wiki: Getting started How do Online and Offline Books differ? 

Online Books Usually organized in a way that several books can share one MegaZine3 framework. Online Books usually are located on a server to be accessed over the internet. Offline Books Usually one single book in the same folder “megazine” as the MegaZine3 software is located in and configured such that the whole book folder can be copied on media (like DVD, CD, stick) for offline use. The book of an Offline version is run by a Flash program: in case of Windows this is megazine.exe, in case of MAC it is megazine.app.

Elements of a Book An example for a simple book with 2 chapters and 2 pages per chapter looks like this: <book pageheight=”640” pagewidth=”480” > <chapter> <page> <snd src=”sound/music.mp3” /> <img src=”images/img_01.jpg” /> </page> <page> <vid position=”center middle” src=”video/vid_01.mp4” /> </page> </chapter> <chapter> <page> <snd src=”sound/music_2.mp3” /> <img top=”10” height=”300” keepar=”true” src=”images/img_02.jpg” /> <img top=”330” height=”300” keepar=”true” src=”images/img_03.jpg” /> </page> <page> <vid position=”center middle” src=”video/vid_02.mp4” /> </page> </chapter> </book> This schematic content of a megazine.mz3 would create a book with 4 pages in 2 chapters (with sound and images on page 1 and page 3, video on page 2 and 4. On page 3 are 2 images plus sound positioned. Out of these elements a book is composed. This can be done manually, but there are easier and faster ways. Those will be explained in the next tutorial, which also will provide a download link to a sample book with images, text and video. Remember: the wiki is a good source of information!
