A Note from the School Captains

Ashford School is a caring institution defined not merely by academic excellence nor the range of experiences and opportunities offered to all students, but more so, the strong sense of community felt by all working parts of our school. This has been more apparent than ever over the past year, and it is something that we feel needs to be mentioned.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a culturally varied community. Not only does this reflect the workplace of the modern day but leads to some of the most interesting and meaningful relationships in and outside of the classroom.

The talented professional staff are always on hand to deal with the many questions, brewed up through engaging hands-on lessons and activities. This reinforces the true value of our motto, ´inspiring minds´ within our school community due to the support and knowledge at our fingertips.

Ashford has a broad spectrum of activities within the co-curricular program offered to all students in Years 7 to 13, from debating club, combined cadet force, art mentoring club, to all kinds of sport activities; everyone’s talents are tailored to. Co-curricular activities really do cater for everyone, offering a refreshing change from a typical school experience.

The exam curriculum we must adhere to can sometimes appear rigid and outdated, however this does not mean the classroom experiences of these subjects are. Having several students going above and beyond by taking part in super-curricular events throughout this year is testament to this. To name a few there are the Maths Challenges, Science Olympiads, Speech and Drama Awards and Music Exams. This again reinforces the importance in which Ashford School grounds extracurricular in within learning.

In a world where the individual voice is growing even louder, Ashford School has its own School Parliament to encourage the student voice. This has been very successful. For example, they recently lobbied for the addition of trousers to the girls´ uniform which has made our School more inclusive and equal. They have also been successful in a pitch for an outside sheltered area to be used during break and lunch, with an emphasis on wellbeing. The aim of the School Parliament is to listen to the students and using this opportunistic environment where we can evolve and have a real impact. This is already happening, and we are excited to see more creative propositions from students for modern issues we are all facing.

This year has taught us that the future is never certain, and we must be ready to drop everything and adjust to a new reality. To be able to do this, it requires a certain resilience and level of hard work, which is taught and developed here. We believe the bounce back of this academic year serves to demonstrate this.

We are excited to be working with such a great group of inspiring prefects and students in order to improve our School further and are looking forward to being the older Sixth Form students we always looked up to.
