T
he irony was not lost on Ben Affleck, as despite not receiving an Oscar nomination for best Director, Argo continued its award-winning success at the Golden Globes, picking up three Baftas – including the ultimate prize of ‘Best Film’. The actor-turned-director was presented with the ‘Best Director’ award at the Baftas by acting legend Ian McKellen, and was quoted as saying: ‘I want to say this is a second act for me and you’ve given me that, this industry has given me that and I want to thank you and I’m so grateful and proud.’ With Argo, Affleck is the first director ever who has failed to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Director, yet has gone on to win both the Golden Globe and the Directors Guild of America awards for best directing, the Critic’s Choice and BAFTA awards for best director and had the film named Best Picture by the previously mentioned organisations and the Producers Guild. Despite some acting success as a child, Affleck first came to national prominence working with childhood friend, Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting in 1997. They starred in the film and shared the writing credit – jointly receiving the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Good Will Hunting’s success transformed Affleck from a virtual unknown into a celebrity almost overnight. Along with Damon and producers Chris Moore and Sean Bailey, Affleck founded the production company LivePlanet, through which the four created the documentary series Project Greenlight, which was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding
Reality Programme in 2002, 2004, and 2005. However, despite numerous film successes including Armageddon, Shakespeare in Love and Pearl Harbor, it was his relationship with Jennifer Lopez that brought him the most media attention. The press nicknamed the couple “Bennifer” and this period became one of the low points of his acting career. Affleck had a series of high profile flops culminating in him winning two Golden Razzies for Worst Actor and Worst Screen Couple (with Jennifer Lopez) for Gigli. Despite his broken engagement with Lopez, rumoured dalliances with alcohol and gambling, Affleck turned his career around with the highly successful Daredevil – the film he starred in with his future wife – Jennifer Garner. As his private life continued to stabilise, so did his career with box office hits in The Town, He’s Just Not That Into You, State of Play, and Extract. However, Argo, the third film directed by Affleck has brought him the most critical acclaim. Following his work on Argo – awarded ‘Best Picture’ at this year’s Oscars – Affleck was selected to replace David Yates as the director for the Warner Bros. adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Stand. Affleck is fairly unique in Hollywood, an accomplished actor, an Oscar-winning screenwriter and an award-winning director, with the rarity of a stable family life (having been happily married to Garner since 2005 and having three children). Despite these achievements, Affleck is still only 40! We look forward to the next instalment of this talented, triple-threat star – whether screen writing, acting or directing – we are sure it will be worth watching. 05

Have a Berry Merry Season What is a berry? Look at your watch and give yourself 20 seconds to name as many berries as you can!
T
he biological definition of a berry is “a fleshy fruit that usually has many seeds; it is made from a single ovary and its middle and inner layers are not distinct from each other”.
and cardiovascular disease. The prefix phyto actually means plant, but, given the nature of their role, these vital nutrients could just as easily be named ‘fighto-chemicals’!
No doubt you thought of blueberries and cranberries, and you may have thought of goji berries and elderberries, but I wonder if you came up with blackcurrants, cherries, grapes and tomatoes, or even dates and bananas, all of which technically are berries (cherries and dates are one-seeded berries).
There are dozens of different phytochemicals, including the following ones that are particularly abundant in berries:
Perhaps even more surprisingly is that to be really strict you could remove blackberries, raspberries and strawberries from your list, as these are actually ‘aggregate fruits’ that consist of a number of smaller fruits. Berries and aggregate fruits like blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are among the healthiest foods on the planet. The reason they are so amazing is that they are a great source of phytochemicals – naturally occurring chemicals which help to neutralise harmful free radicals. Free radicals are by-products of normal biochemical processes that take place in each and every one of us. They are actually utilised by the body to kill bacteria and fight inflammation, but, when they build up to excessive levels, they may begin to damage protein, DNA, cells and tissue through a process called oxidation. Phytochemicals have an antioxidant effect that protects body cells from cancer 08
Anthocyanins – found in blackcurrants, blueberries, cherries, cranberries and red currants. Also found in red/purplish vegetables like red cabbage and beetroot. Ellagic acid – found in grapes, pomegranates, raspberries and strawberries. It is an antioxidant that reduces the effects of estrogen and may help the liver break down cancer-causing substances in the blood. Lycopene – found in tomatoes, it is a bright red carotene with strong antioxidant properties. Studies show that it may protect against a variety of cancers as well as cardiovascular disease. Also found in water melon and papaya. Pterostilbene – found in blueberries and grapes. It is similar in structure and function to resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grapes and red wine. Resveratrol – found in red grapes, blueberries and pomegranates. It is believed to play a part in fighting a variety of different cancers.

The ORAC League Table Scientists have come up with a way of comparing the degree to which fruit and vegetables can protect against free radical damage in the body. It is the ORAC score, where ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.
The left-hand side of the table below shows the ORAC scores for a variety of berries. The scores for various vegetables on the right-hand side of the table show that berries are – in general – a more concentrated source of antioxidants than vegetables.

Protect your loved ones by pre-paying funeral costs in advance
N
one of us likes to think about paying for a funeral, but taking out a Funeral Plan is a sensible and considered decision for the future. Rather like making a Will it means that you and your family will benefit from peace of mind that there won’t be any financial worries at an emotionally distressing time, and you can rest assured that your final wishes will be respected. Take action now – beat increasing funeral prices The current economic climate in the UK means that pensioners are being relentlessly affected by rising costs. Whether you or your family are paying for old age care, or finding the extra money to meet the escalating cost of fuel and food bills, there are rarely opportunities to save. Funeral costs are also on the rise. In 2012, the average cost of a funeral was £3,516 and with nearly a 7% increase in prices expected each year, it is estimated that by 2017 costs could be almost £5,000. With a Guaranteed Funeral Plan from Dignity, you can take care of the required costs for a cremation funeral in advance and pay at today’s prices. The Plan also allows you to incorporate specific requests in advance such as hymns or readings. A guarantee that funeral costs will be covered Other ways of paying for a funeral, such as savings or Over 50s insurance plans, do not promise that the full cost of the funeral will be covered. The Guaranteed Funeral Plan from Dignity guarantees that no matter how much funeral expenses
might increase in the years ahead, the full cost of the arrangements in the plan will be covered. And because it’s a fixed cost plan, when it’s paid for there’s not another penny to pay for the services it offers. Your funeral couldn’t be in better hands Dignity is the UK’s leading provider of funeral plans. In 1985, they launched the first funeral plan to be offered in the UK and 520,000 people have now seen the benefits of having a plan with them. With a national network of more than 1,000 funeral directors in towns and cities across the country, (over 150 in Scotland) conducting more than 62,000 funerals each year, you can be sure that your funeral will be in safe hands and your family will receive all the support and guidance they may need from a trusted and well respected funeral director.

With various payment choices available – including paying in a single lump sum, over 12 or 60 months – setting up a pre-paid funeral plan is a simple, straightforward step to take. Mind the gap W
hen you think of gap years, you think of adventurous young travellers off to see the world or students taking a break between their studies. All are keen to escape the control of Mum and Dad and experience the exotic and unknown. However, times have changed and more and more over-50s are taking the plunge – buoyed up by their children’s adventures and keen to seek some of their own.
No longer is a villa in traditional holiday resorts such as Spain and Portugal enough but trips to Thailand, Australia and other long haul destinations are growing in popularity. Age is no longer a barrier when it comes to experiencing different cultures and spreading your wings. In a study of 5,000 people, including almost 1,000 over-50s commissioned by Thomas Cook, they discovered that four in ten older holidaymakers are opting for an adventure-filled break, taking part in every 12
excursion and activity they can squeeze into their trip. Over half of the over-50s surveyed plan to travel the world when they retire and nearly four in ten are taking the opportunity to visit destinations they had never even dreamed about when they were young. Commenting on the trends, Thomas Cook said: ‘We’ve seen a rise in the number of over-50s booking trips to far-flung destinations once their children have left home and an increase in long-duration holidays, with some booking 21- and 42-night packages. It seems that travelling the world is no longer reserved for school leavers or college students.’ Over-50s are taking gap years because they have the time to do it, having retired from work and seen their children leave home. Over-50s professionals may also be taking more career breaks, adopting something of a ‘now or never’ attitude to a year out. Evidence suggests that the UK’s more mature population is apparently fitter, healthier and wealthier than ever before. Statistics indicate that 80 per cent of the UK’s wealth is held by the over-50s. If the

boom in cruise holidays is a marker, a number of tour operators have already turned their attention to this growing sector. Other travel suppliers will need to keep up and respond creatively to the requirements of this time-rich market – and provide the services to meet, and exceed client expectations. Additionally, redundancies and early retirement amongst the 55-64 age group is prompting the increase in gap years amongst this age group. According to P&O Cruises there has been a 300 per cent increase over the last five years in the number of people taking a gap year later in life with an estimated 200,000 in pre-retirement during 2010 alone. There is a thirst for adventure from walking the Grand Canyon, touring in Jordan and exploring South America proving popular choices. The key is to keep safe and have fun and if you’re planning your Gap year we would love to hear all about your adventures.
Gap year health: Seven tips Your health is important, when you are travelling abroad. Protecting yourself is more than selecting the right jabs and medicines.
1. Medical advice
Take advice about the health risks and precautions you should take over your trip. Don’t just use the Internet, speak to your doctor to ensure you’re prepared.
2. Vaccines
The best vaccines for gap-year travellers are rabies and hepatitis. You may also need updates against childhood diphtheria, tetanus and polio, typhoid and hepatitis A; and for some countries, yellow fever and/or meningitis A C W and Y.
3. Infections borne in food and water
Diarrhoea, dysentery and related diseases are the most likely health problems people will encounter. Illness can be reduced by traveling with oral rehydration sachets to combat dehydration, Imodium to control symptoms and antibiotics for severe cases.
4. Insects
Diseases borne by insects are widespread, including malaria and a host of other infections and mosquito-borne viruses. Cover up, use repellents, nets or mosquito killers in your bedroom. Also, travel with a reserve supply of malaria medication if there’s a chance of exposure.
5. Accidents
Most deaths among travellers are caused by accidents and injuries, not diseases. Risks are higher and emergency medical resources are poorer.
6. Security
The same considerations apply to personal security: travellers can be a soft target for crime and might be insufficiently streetwise to avoid trouble.
7. Insurance
Travel insurance policies generally exclude many sporting and adventure activities – check the small print carefully.

Colour Up
olour is an essential element of interior design, and whilst we may not be aware of it, different colours raise emotions, alter moods and create atmosphere.
Research shows that we share basic responses to certain colours. So, when you’re next decorating a room or updating a living space, think about what colour effect you would like to achieve. Red, the most emotionally intense colour, is stimulating and arousing and associated with strength, passion, sexuality and life. It draws the eye and is often used for accents only as it increases your respiratory rate. However, the stimulating nature of red could be used in a bedroom to create an element of romance through the use of fabrics and accessories. Red is a popular choice for the walls of kitchens and dining rooms as it stimulates the appetite. It is also making a comeback for living rooms, as bold and vibrant accents of red make an assertive statement. Purple is a tricky colour psychologically speaking and unpredictable in terms of how people react to it. It can be considered as artificial, intense and mournful by some and romantic, luxurious and sophisticated by others. In modern interior design, the purple family of colours is highly regarded. Softer more restful mauves, lilacs and lavenders can work in bedrooms and bathrooms as they promote day dreaming and inner calmness. Purple can be stylish and original, especially when used in fabrics, wallpapers and accessories.
Blue is one of the most popular colours. It calms, relaxes, inspires tranquillity and suppresses the appetite. Blue is an obvious choice for bedrooms as it suggests harmony and peace. Its relationship to water makes it a popular bathroom choice. A powder blue will work well with white, soft pink, mint green and pale lemon. The most common use for blue is in monochromatic colour schemes, where blues of different shades are combined, creating a tranquil space, sedative and heavenly. Yellow is said to speed the metabolism, enhance concentration and inspire optimism, and happiness, increasing self esteem and overall well-being. Along with orange, bright yellow is rarely used in interior design as it often clashes with calmer colours. However, used as an accent, yellow can wake up a room, reflecting sunlight which can invade interior space with a gold light making the room feel bright and cosy. White, the purist colour, stands for light, simplicity, and hope. White goes with everything and is the perfect complement to many shades. Too much, however, can become stark and clinical. Personalise your home. Decide what distinctive look and feel you would like to create and colour it in...
