A BETTER WAY TO DO APARTMENT LIVING There’s a place in central Phoenix, between Biltmore and Midtown, where everything you could want or need lies just beyond your front door. A place where parks and bike trails accent boutiques and bistros. The commutes are shorter, happy hours are longer, and everyone’s favorite mountain is just a stone’s throw away. That place is Camelback Corridor and there you’ll find Peak 16, a luxury community full of all the modern comforts you expect in a home, and then some. It’s the perfect backdrop for your busy life.

LETTER FROM THE editor By KJ Philp

S

ome of you may recall the words that graced the cover of Echo’s January 2016 issue: “Where have all our bars gone?” Inside, we addressed the closure of several LGBTQ bars, including Amsterdam, Apollo’s, Zorf’s and Club 24 (formerly Incognito). Since then, we’ve seen Twisted Peacock, Ticoz, Corduroy, R Lounge, and Harley’s close their doors (not all bars, but they were certainly all LGBTQ businesses with bars). We’ve also welcomed Club Volt, 2601 on Central and Boycott to the gayborhood. For this issue, we did a little bar hopping and we’re excited to introduce you to the newest addition to the Phoenix scene: Caravan Taproom. While it’s far from new (it originally opened in 1960), the bar is under new ownership and interior renovations have just been completed. Bonus: You can find the cover couple behind the bar together there on weekends! Thanks, Christopher and Santos! We caught up with owner Keifer Rowlands to find out more about the bar’s history and what he’s bringing to the gayborhood with his new business venture in “Caravan Taproom” on page 24. Then we checked out Kobalt Bar’s new digs at Park Central Mall. Congratulations to Jeffrey Perales, Robert Mancuso and the Kobalt family on the completion of their renovation in Suite 175 (on the southside of the complex). We have all the details for you in “A Grand Re-Opening” on page 28. Our third stop on this bar crawl was at Boycott, a brand that celebrated 15 years in the Valley this summer. Owner Audrey Corley shared some memories of her early days in the industry as well as what she attributes the longevity of her

8

business to in “Boycotting The Norm” on page 32. The conversation on local bars is not over yet. With the expertise of ArizonaDrag.com’s Edward Castro and with the creative vision of our new graphic designer Lindsey Kelly (welcome to the team, Lindsey!) we are excited to finally roll out Echo’s monthly Drag Calendar. This is a supplement to our online Community Calendar that’s intended to keep you informed with who’s hitting the stages at our community bars each week, as well as monthly engagements. If you’d like to submit an event for consideration on the Drag Calendar, visit echomag.com/ community-calendar. Speaking of stages, Mr. Gay America took place this summer and, for the first time ever, Arizona was represented on that national stage. Join us in congratulating Geo Johnson, the inaugural Mr. Gay Arizona America, on his newest title. We had the opportunity to find out more about the contest and what’s in store for Geo throughout the coming year in “Mister Excellence” on page 36. Last, but definitely not least, we’d like to congratulate Edgar Penn on his year of service to the community as Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef 2017. We invite you to meet the Valley’s oldest titleholder and find out more about the third annual contest, hosted by the Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, in “Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef” on page 20. That’s it for this month. Don’t forget to make your vote count in the primary election Aug. 28 and be sure to check us out next month as we unveil some surprises in honor of our annual arts issue.

HRC Endorses Katie Hobbs for Arizona Secretary of State HRC has announced its endorsement of Arizona Senate Minority Leader Katie Hobbs for Arizona Secretary of State. “Throughout her time in the Arizona legislature, Katie Hobbs has stood shoulder to shoulder with our community, working hard to move equality forward,” said HRC Arizona State director Justin Unga. “With thousands of Arizonans-including LGBTQ people of color and transgender Arizonansmore vulnerable to discrimination at the ballot box than ever before, we need a Secretary of State who will fight to protect and expand voting rights, and ensure every Arizonan can make their voice heard. Katie Hobbs is a proven problem solver and champion for all Arizonans, and HRC will be working hard on the ground to turn out Arizona’s more than 800,000 Equality Voters for her this November.” First elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2010 and the Arizona State Senate in 2012, Hobbs is a strong advocate for LGBTQ equality. She has supported and co-sponsored several

pro-equality bills, including legislation to extend inclusive non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Arizonans and legislation to repeal discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ adoption language in state statutes. “Throughout my legislative career, I have stood proudly with the LGBTQ community, working to ensure that ALL Arizonans enjoy the same quality of life, free from discrimination,” Hobbs said. “I’ve volunteered with LGBTQ youth at one•n•ten, and I have the privilege of working alongside the folks at Phoenix Pride celebrating the LGBTQ community here in the Valley. The Human Rights Campaign is doing the important work of electing pro-equality champions around the country and I’m thrilled to have their endorsement in this critical race for Secretary of State.” Hobbs also worked to extend health care to hundreds of thousands of Arizonans, create new education and job training opportunities, and establish rights for victims of sexual and domestic violence.

In Arizona, HRC has identified more than 800,000 Arizonans as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Arizona in the 2018 cycle, and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history. Source: Human Rights Campaign.

HRC Endorses Rep. Ruben Gallego for Re-election HRC has announced its endorsement of Congressman Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) for re-election to Arizona’s seventh Congressional District. “Throughout his time in public service, Rep. Gallego has proven himself to be a stalwart champion for the LGBTQ community,” said HRC Arizona State director Justin Unga. “He has stood by us in the fight for full federal equality and HRC is proud to endorse him for re-election. We look forward to working with him to move equality forward both in Arizona and across the country.” As a member of the Arizona State House in 2014, Rep. Gallego helped lead the opposition to a dangerous expansion of Arizona’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which could have granted a broad license to discriminate against LGBTQ people. In the United States House of Representatives, he has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community, serving as a vice chair of the chamber’s LGBT Equality Caucus, and co-sponsoring the Equality Act, landmark federal 12

legislation that would guarantee the same basic nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ people provided for other protected characteristics under federal law. He currently holds a perfect 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, which measures members of Congress’ support for LGBTQ equality. “The Human Rights Campaign is a critical partner in the fight for social justice and I couldn’t be any prouder to have their endorsement,” Rep. Gallego said. “Their work has directly improved the lives of millions of LGBTQ Americans, and our country is so much stronger for it. I look forward to continuing to partner with the Human Rights Campaign during my next term in Congress.” HRC recently announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The campaign is the biggest strategic expansion in the organization’s 38-year history and will include

significant investments in Arizona. HRC Endorses Kyrsten Sinema for US Senate HRC has announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-9) for United States Senate. “Kyrsten Sinema is a fighter and a trailblazer who has spent her career advancing the rights of the LGBTQ community,” said HRC president Chad Griffin. “As a highly effective legislator, Kyrsten has proven herself to be a relentless champion for equality. We are proud to endorse her candidacy for the

U.S. Senate.” First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, Kyrsten Sinema is the first openly bisexual member of the House. She has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community, serving as a co-chair of the chamber’s Equality Caucus, earning a perfect 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecards each Congress since she was elected, and co-sponsoring the Equality Act. HRC Endorses January Contreras for AZ Attorney General Americans — especially the LGBTQ community — has never been more important, and we are proud to endorse such a strong champion of fairness, justice and equality,” said HRC senior vice president for policy and public affairs JoDee Winterhof. “January Contreras’ strong track record as a county prosecutor and Assistant Attorney General make her the clear choice to defend the people of Arizona. We look forward to working with her to move equality forward in the Grand Canyon State.” HRC has announced its endorsement of January Contreras for Arizona Attorney General. “The role of attorneys general in protecting the civil liberties of all

organization dedicated to serving youth in the foster care system and young people affected by homelessness and abuse. Contreras will be facing incumbent Attorney General Mark Brnovich who is seeking a second term. Brnovich joined the suit against the Obama administration’s life-saving guidance protecting transgender students, as well as a brief to the Supreme Court of the United States in support of granting businesses a potentially sweeping license to discriminate against LGBTQ people. Brnovich also advised the Arizona Department of Child Safety to deny licenses to married same-sex couples seeking to jointly adopt or foster children. Source: Human Rights Campaign.

HRC Endorses Greg Stanton for Congress HRC has announced its endorsement of Greg Stanton for election to the United States House of Representatives in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. In addition to the estimated 200,000 LGBTQ voters in Arizona, HRC has identified more than 750,000 “Equality Voters,” voters who support LGBTQinclusive policies. HRC has prioritized investments in Arizona races and has had full-time staff on the ground organizing, registering pro-equality voters, and recruiting volunteers since last year. “Greg Stanton’s commitment to equality and years of service to the people of Arizona make him the clear choice for voters come November,” said HRC Arizona State director Justin Unga. 14

“We’ve been proud to work with him to advance equality in Phoenix over the last six years, and we look forward to working with him in the fight for full federal equality in the United States Congress. HRC is proud to endorse his candidacy to represent Arizona’s 9th Congressional District.” Since becoming mayor of America’s fifth largest city in 2012, Greg Stanton has championed LGBTQ equality, transforming Phoenix into a city that is fully inclusive and open to all. Under his leadership Phoenix has consistently scored 100 on HRC’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the only nationwide rating system assessing LGBTQ inclusion in municipal law and policy in more than 500 cities across the country. Stanton also supports marriage equality and the

Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws. Source: Human Rights Campaign. news

Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef

Grand Canyon Sisters host third annual contest for men over 50 By Michelle Talsma Everson

R

yan Goldner, also known as Sister Grizzly Madams of the Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, believes that older gay men are hardly recognized in the local community – and that’s a problem. To help with that issue, the Sisters host Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef, a contest just for men over 50, each fall. “Very rarely do you see men over 50 represented in local and national LGBTQ contests and that needs to stop,” Goldner said. “Phoenix is ‘gaying and graying’ at a fast pace, so there needed to be a contest like this. It’s the Sisters’ way of celebrating queer men of a certain age and their continued contributions to the greater LGBTQ community.” This year, the third annual contest will take place Sept. 22 at Pat O’s Bunkhouse. “[The contest] is a celebration of mature self-identifying men born before 1968,” Goldner explained. “Whether you are a bear, leather daddy, business suitwearing silver fox, Hawaiian shirt loving laid back dude or any regular Joe over 50 who always wanted to enter a contest but never found one right for you, this is it.” This event is also the Sisters’ annual fundraiser for Bikers Against Child Abuse, Maricopa Black Canyon Chapter, which plays a critical role in helping Maricopa County’s most vulnerable children. To date, the Sisters have raised more than $4,400 for the organization. Last year, Edgar Penn took home the title. Goldner believes that the 82-yearold may just be one of the oldest LGBTQ titleholders. “Edgar won because he is amazing,” Goldner shared. “All our contestants were great, but Edgar really stood out for our judges and the crowd. He is compassionate, well-spoken and was just hysterical on stage. He handled the onstage funny questions like a pro and gave a great speech, and definitely rocked the hot wear category.” Penn found out about the competition through a note posted at the host bar in 2016, and went on to earn runner-up honors in the inaugural contest. But he was back for the title in 2017. “When I won, I was elated – it was one

of those ‘wow’ moments,” Penn said. “I think it helped that I didn’t give up; I came back a second time in 2017 to compete.” Now retired, Penn worked for the State of Arizona for the majority of his career. But, what he thinks made him stand out to the judges – besides his see-through underwear – is how busy and involved he keeps himself. “I’m a self-taught composer, I spend time canning, and I’m a published poet,” he shared, adding that he also paints in both watercolors and oils, and has sold many of his paintings. In addition to all of his creative endeavors, Penn also volunteers at Community Church of Hope in Phoenix.

“I work in the office there and my title is music manager,” he said. “I help to contact new visitors.”

During his title year, which spans September 2017 to September 2018, Penn proudly wears his title sash whenever appropriate to help spread the word about the contest. “[Winning the title] shows that, at 82 you can still contribute and make a difference in your community.” Goldner added. “[Edgar] does more than most folks half his age.” The Sisters make it clear that Mr. Prime Beef is a just-for-fun contest and winners don’t have many formal obligations; the only requirement of the winner is to spread joy in their sash as they see fit. “After winning, Edgar wanted to dive in and help out,” Goldner added, “including holding a wildly successful teddy bear drive for abused children at Christmas time last year. I don’t think we could have asked for more [in a titleholder].” When asked about advice for potential contestants, “just go for it … a title is a fun thing to go after at any age,” was Penn’s advice.

“It’s not about how old you are, it’s about how old you think you are,” he said. “And I think I’m not a day over 40!” The Sisters’ third annual Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef contest will consist of three categories, and will also include local entertainment, a silent auction, special guest emcees, guests from BACA, and more. Anyone interested in competing for the title of Mr. Phoenix Prime Beef 2018 is invited to contact any Sister or email phxprimebeef@gmail.com.

How to extend the life of your aging AC unit I can’t stress enough that simple annual preventative maintenance is the one thing you can do that will add extra years of life to your AC unit and prevent breakdowns. That is why I created the “Complete Tune Up” years ago providing everything to keep a system in optimal shape for performance and longevity. It is over $680 worth of parts and physical work on your system for just $159.95. If your unit is old and problematic, then you really should take some time to prepare so you don’t have the panic that comes with an unexpected new AC unit purchase. The first rule of thumb is when you are spending more on repairs than maintenance and your unit is 12-15 years old, it is definitely time to start shopping. This at least gives you time to prepare and know what your options are. Here are things you should expect to see to insure you are getting the best information and pricing. Newer units are made with higher efficiency and capacity, however, the BTU output which is the required amount to effectively cool the square footage in your home, has changed. You may not always be best served replacing like for like in tonnage. In order to give the accurate BTU and tonnage requirement, a Heat Load Calc, also referred to as a Manual J Load Calc, should be done. It takes into account the home’s square footage, location and number of windows and doors relative to sun exposure, and ceiling heights along with how much insulation is in your attic. It gives you the most accurate unit size needed. If you buy an AC unit slightly undersized, it will run all the time and there goes the efficiency you wanted from your new unit. If it is oversized, it will short cycle and not run long enough which puts immense wear on the unit. So expect a contractor to spend a good hour or more in your home looking at these things before they provide you an estimate. If they just tell you here is what you have so here is what you need, keep shopping. Next is the issue of pricing. Most units unfortunately have their final meltdown during the summer’s extreme heat. So you are pressed to make some fast decisions in order to bring cool comfort back to your home. Unfortunately, some contractors will take advantage of that weak point and offer higher than normal or even gouged pricing. The average new AC unit replacement should run between $6,000 and $8,000. If you are getting some crazy high estimates, keep shopping. Lastly, when shopping, one factor that determines price is the energy efficiency or SEER Rating. Today’s minimum is a 14 SEER which is probably double what your older unit is putting out. That makes for a nice savings come utility bill time. Units can go up to 20 or 22 SEER but the high cost does not really payoff in long term energy savings. A 16 SEER unit is probably your best value and return on investment. About the author:

“I believe by preserving our history we preserve the nature of humanity and can look to the past to see how we’ve lived,” he said. “This element of Phoenix is important to me because I find it fascinating when I go to the archives and I see all the changes that the bar has undergone in the past 58 years.”

Fast forward to a hot August night at Caravan Taproom: burly bartenders Christopher and Santos Gonzales are serving up drinks, DJ Illuminati is keeping things lit from his booth in one corner and the bar’s promotional partner Dean Coxx is engaging everyone with his flexed-out selfies and dance moves. “Caravan Taproom became what it is because our patrons made it what it is,” Rowlands said. “I’d love to say what we are and who our patrons are was some type of grandiose vision. It wasn’t. We opened the doors and … had certain principals we wanted to live by, but the clientele and the bar were created by the people and for the people. [We] have simply been stewards for what people wanted and we’ve been blessed enough that they love what they’ve created.” The truth is, this was far from an overnight effort. It all started last year, when Rowlands, Arizona native with “entrepreneurial spirit” running through his veins, discovered the bar was for sale via Craigslist. “I saw the listing and I became fascinated right away. Nine months later I was the owner,” he said.

From there, he began building his team: David Gentile, Rowlands’ partner of nine years who “goes along with any wild ride” tends bar on the weeknights and stays on-call throughout the weekends. Gentile introduced Rowlands to Christopher Gonzales, who was candidate No.1 to become the bar’s general manager. And you’ll find his husband, Santos Gonzales, behind the bar with him on weekends. The team was in place and the plan was in motion when Christopher introduced Rowlands to Shawn Silberblatt, co-owner of For The People on Central Avenue.

“Shawn told me he had a passion for dive bars and would love to design the bar,” Rowlands recalled. “He did a mockup of his vision and I was immediately enamored with it. Two months later and we are almost finished with a complete interior transformation.” Inside Caravan Taproom, the lighting under the U-shaped bar accentuates the

From karaoke and trivia to vintage arcade-style consoles and jumbo Jenga, Rowlands said these games contribute to the overall vibe he’s going for and are also a reflection of all the decades the bar’s history spans.

While there weren’t many physical elements of the bar’s history that Rowlands was able to preserve, he has reached out to the neighborhood to see if anyone has anything that once was part of the bar. “Instead we are focusing on preserving other things,” he explained. “For example, we returned it to its original name, Caravan Taproom [est. 1960],” he said. After spending the past 27 years in corporate America, Rowlands has drawn advice from many of his friends and colleagues, including Matthew Harty of Los Diablos and the business model adopted by David Cooley, owner of The Abbey in West Hollywood. “The most important advice I’ve received [has been] reading interviews with David Cooley,” Rowlands shared. “He talks a lot about everyone having fun together. This is what I wanted my bar to be: A bar, exclusive of labels, where everyone is accepted, and everyone has fun together. That’s’ what he says the Abbey is and, considering his success, I’ll take his words as gold.” And as far as crowd goes, Rowlands said it depends on the night. “I’m learning from my patrons that Caravan is different to each patron in their own ways,” Rowlands said. “Some come here because it’s in the neighborhood. Some come here because we have fun games and a great vibe. We truly are a foreveryone establishment.”

A Grand Re-Opening Kobalt becomes first tenant to open in renovated Park Central Mall

ith the renovation of Park Central Mall, located between Osborn and Thomas roads on Central Avenue, Kobalt Bar is relocating to a new space they designed and constructed, on the south side of the property. Following a four-month construction effort, the grand opening of the new Kobalt Bar took place Aug. 3 at 3110 N. Central Ave. – in the new space – Suite 175.

Having first opened on the north side of the mall, in 2006, Kobalt was known for being “trendy without the ‘tude.” Now, following the lead of the currently under-construction 337,000 square foot shopping center – which was recently purchased by Tucson-based Plaza Cos. and Holualoa Cos. – Kobalt owner Jeffrey Perales (pictured above) and his business partner, Robert Mancuso, are proud to introduce their new bar’s MidcenturyModern design, reminiscent of Park Central’s original 1957 architecture, combined with contemporary stateof-the-art features and uniquely local offerings.

“After 12 years, we’ve become known for our relaxed atmosphere; unique, trend-setting events; live local entertainment and the friendliest bartenders in town,” said Perales, who is also an Echo Magazine Hall of Fame inductee. “This new location allows us to make a better use of space. It’s more open, roomy, full of natural lighting, and it creates a window to our stunning Phoenix skyline. We listened to our customers and worked hand-in-hand with the architect to select lights, fixtures, finishes, layout and design details that would not only satisfy our loyal patrons, but would also attract a new clientele.” Brown Builders was the contractor for the Kobalt Bar project and Plaza Companies was the developer. In honor of the new

chapter in Kobalt Bar’s history, Perales and his staff have created a new menu of signature cocktails featuring local spirits, including Hardway Bourbon and Grand Canyon Vodka, from Flagstaff; Western Sage Gin, from Prescott; and they now offer locally brewed beers on tap that include Barrio Blonde, Pilot Rock, Tower Station IPS, Prescott Ponderosa IPA, Orange Blossom Papago and Huss Koffee. Having won several awards for “The Best Karaoke Bar in Phoenix” and the Echo Magazine Readers’ Choice Award for “Happiest Happy Hour,” Kobalt will continue its tradition as a Friday night happy hour hotspot by featuring $5 Tito’s signature vodka every week. Additionally, the bar will continue to feature nights dedicated to show tunes, trivia and other customer favorites. The new Kobalt Bar boasts approximately 2,500 square feet of inside space and an additional 1,500 square feet of outdoor seating, which is larger than the bar’s previous space. It also boasts indoor and outdoor stages – which will feature live music, special guests and fundraising events – and a new 11-by-28-foot projection screen for viewing parties and special presentations. Parking is ample, secure and free and the Valley Metro Rail has two stops (Osborn/Central Ave. and Thomas/Central Ave.) that are yards away. “We don’t want to be the best bar in the neighborhood, we want to be the best bar in Central Phoenix,” Perales added, “A gathering place where everyone feels welcome and at home.” Kobalt Bar currently is home to 12 employees, all retained from the previous location. Kobalt Bar is a 21-and-older establishment and both the bar and patio are available to rent for special events. For additional information, visit kobaltbarphoenix@ gmail.com or call 602-264-5307. Boycotting the Norm Phoenix bar owner celebrates 15-year journey By KJ Philp

A

udrey Corley’s experience in the local bar scene began 25 years ago, when she landed her first job as a barback. “I was 18, and I fell in love with it … I moved around as a bartender,” she said, “and eventually started as a bar manager at A League of our Own in Phoenix. I knew from very early on that I wanted to be a bar owner.”

Audrey Corley.

In college, she and her basketball teammates often discussed Corley’s dream of owning a bar – specifically a bar named Boycott, which stands for boycotting the norm. On July 16, 2003, her vision came to life as a Boycott feature night at BZ Grill. Fast forward 15 years, and Boycott has existed in various forms and at several Valley addresses, and on July 13, Corley and the Boycott team celebrated the brand’s quinceañera in the space it’s called its permanent home since March 2017. Echo caught up with Corley, Boycott’s founder and creator, to find out more about this milestone and here’s what she had to say. Echo: Take us back to the very first Boycott night. What was it like? What were your goals and how did you measure success at the time?

Venus Summer Soirée July 21 at Boycott Bar. Photo by nightfuse.com.

Corley: There was a void in the community for an upscale place for women at that time. I had just left managing the E Lounge, and I had nowhere to go out … and meet other women … I went to the owner of BZ grill and asked him if he would let me do a Boycott feature night that I had envisioned since college. He agreed, and I started promoting the night through friends and passing out cards for the event … I was nervous and excited, but I felt like the community was ready for something different. On that first night, we had 452 men and women who showed up. It was so busy … [that] I knew we had something special. Echo: How did that night differ – or not – from your goals and measurement of success today? Corley: My goals and vision for Boycott are similar to when it began. I want to create a welcoming space in our community for all people – except rude people. This is encapsulated in the chalkboard we have hanging near the bar that says, “All Are Welcome.” I see longevity as an indication of success. However, I see the relationships with my customers and community as the goal and measure of success. When people

Feature Story

keep coming back because they feel at home and can be themselves, I have been successful. Echo: Why is Boycott an important space within Phoenix’s landscape of LGBTQ bars? Corley: Boycott is an important space within Phoenix’s landscape because it has tried to connect to the local community regardless of their [identity]. I try to genuinely set Boycott as a landmark for Melrose and Phoenix rather than only for the LGBTQ community. This … has also contributed to my continued sustainability. Echo: On that note, how would you describe Boycott’s vibe to someone who may not be familiar with it? Corley: Boycott is a space for everyone. The crowd is always diverse, and I try to make sure everyone has a good time. Echo: In our January 2016 issue, we addressed the closure of several LGBTQ bars and, 31 issues later we’re celebrating additions and milestones of our community bars – to what do you attribute this shift? Corley: I think there has been a significant change in American society when it comes to acceptance of the LGBTQ community. There is still certainly a long way to go, and there is still serious prejudice in society. However, I think the shift in demand for LGBTQ spaces in Phoenix … is an indication of more acceptance by society, rather than less … This growing acceptance, however, makes it more difficult to be a bar that is exclusive to one portion of the population. Echo: Do you see your role with Boycott as an opportunity to mentor the next generation of Phoenix’s LGBTQ bar owners and operators? Corley: Yes, I see my position at Boycott as an opportunity to mentor the next generation. I’m here to impact as many lives as I can, and I am always looking for ways to help other LGBTQ owners and operators. Mister Excellence

Geo Johnson kicks off his reign as the inaugural Mr. Gay Arizona America By Laura Latzko

W

hen Michael Dutzer and Rob Mansman, owners of the Miss Gay America pageant, announced the return of the Mr. Gay America Contest for 2017, it opened a new door for male entertainers aspiring to showcase their talents before new audiences. Originally established in 1983 as Mr. Gay All-American, the contest was discontinued after the reign of Rasean Montrese in 2009. “When the national owners brought back Mr. Gay America, I thought it’d be a good thing to have here because the male entertainers here in Arizona are so different. They’re so fresh,” said Daniel Eckstrom, Mr. Gay Arizona America Promoter. “I thought why not bring that and give them another avenue?” The success of Miss Gay Arizona America, Arizona’s longest-running and most-prestigious female impersonation pageant, prompted Eckstrom to start a statewide Mister system. “We want[ed] somebody who’s going to fulfill the duties, who’s going to represent the community, who’s going to represent the America system,” Eckstrom said. On April 22, George “Geo” Johnson became the first male entertainer to earn the Mr. Gay Arizona America title. According to Eckstrom, it was important for the first Arizona titleholder to be someone who is already established in the community. “The thing with Geo is that he’s been part of this community for such a long time … It’s good for the community to see what he’s doing. I think he’s doing a great job being visible,” Eckstrom said.

Next Stop: Nationals For Geo, performing on a national stage isn’t a new experience. In addition to the local pageants he’s won – including Mr. Phoenix Pride 2016 and Mr. Gay Arizona USofA – he has also earned the title of Mr. American National Star and placed in the top 12 at Mr. Gay USofA. His first experiences in national pageantry, however, came as a backup dancer at Miss Gay America. And he credits the queens he danced for with teaching him how to pay attention to detail and Feature Story

how to conduct himself professionally at a national contest. Geo returned to the national stage at Mr. Gay America June 30 to July 1 in St. Louis for what he described as an experience much different than his previous contests. “You definitely have to impress the [judges], either with something they haven’t seen or just by being funny. There’s got to be an element of creativity in there,” he said, adding that he designs most of his own costumes. With any pageant, he summarized, it’s important to stand out. At Mr. Gay America, Geo competed against 16 other contestants in the categories of talent, presentation, red carpet fashion, onstage question and interview. While he has always found talent to be one of his strongest categories (he slayed a Bruno Mars impersonation on the Mr. Gay America stage), Geo said interview has always been a challenge because he never knows what to expect. During his interview for nationals, he talked about his plans to serve the Arizona community on a local level. At the culmination of the pageant, Geo didn’t place as close to the top as he’d hoped to, but he said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “I didn’t do as great as I wished I [had], but I was very proud of what I did. I had a great time … That’s the only way you’re going to want to go back,” he said. “If you don’t have a great experience, it makes it harder to find the motivation to go back,” His hard work paid off, however, and he received the coveted Mr. Congeniality Award. “Any one person can win, but you always have to carry yourself as a winner,” Geo said.

Making Local History As the inaugural titleholder for Mr. Gay Arizona America, Geo is tasked with growing the system throughout the next year. Not only will Geo serve alongside Adriana Galliano, Miss Gay Arizona America 2018, Eckstrom said the two titleholders will make appearances together and hold events together

throughout the year as the first Arizona America couple. (Editor’s Note: Galliano will compete in the Miss Gay America 2018 pageant Oct. 3-6 in St. Louis. Stay tuned to Echo for more.) “It’s one more person they can lean on, one more person they can depend on. I’m really excited to see what they do together,” Eckstrom said. The Miss and Mr. Gay Arizona America pageant systems aren’t that different, according to Geo. In both, the titleholders are expected to be a “symbol of excellence.” This is something that Geo has always set out to do, both professionally and personally. “I’m always working to be a ‘symbol of excellence,’ not because I think of myself as a great person but because I aspire to be the best I can be,” he said. Geo plans to grow the system by opening up more opportunities for male entertainers to perform and develop their craft. “I want to outreach to people that I already know are very talented … and get them out there [to] start performing before they decide to go for a pageant,” he said. “I think it’s good to get as much experience as you can performing here and there before you actually hit the stage for a competition.” Geo credits the titles he’s held throughout the years with helping him better learn how to use his platform as a male entertainer to serve his community. “I feel like I am more aware of the good things you can do to help the community once you have a title. When I was Mister Phoenix Pride, I was able to see a little bit of that,” he said. “I’ve always been willing to help, but now I want to be a little more of that wheel that starts something going.” With each title, Geo said he grows as a performer and as an individual, and he plans to continue to improve while not straying from his own personal style. “You have to get better, and you have to always stay true to yourself,” he said, “ ... you don’t want to lose [your] identity.”

Bear Island

Discover a gay tropical paradise off the coast of Africa By Seth Bracken

I

want to let you in on a travel secret. Well, it’s a secret for most Americans, but it’s something the Brits and Germans have known for years. There are seven Spanish islands located about 100 miles off the coast of western Africa. And, on top of ideal weather, sandy beaches, rugged volcanic mountaintops and gorges, one town on the Canary Islands – Playa del Ingles (English Beach) – just so happens to be a gay oasis. Think Palm Springs meets Key West, but bigger. We’re talking dozens of gay resorts, gay bars and a lively gay beach – even an entire four-story (mostly) gay complex called the Yumbo Center. And in March, it became a whole lot harrier. The third annual Bear Carnival attracted hundreds of bears, cubs, otters and their admirers to the seaside town of about 36,000 people. While not nearly on the scale of the more popular bear events,

such as Sitges or Provincetown Bear Weeks, Bear Carnival has its own unique appeal. Many of the events took place in the center of gay life on Grand Canary, the Yumbo Center. This outdoor gay mall boasts multiple drag cabaret shows, half a dozen cruising bars, several bear bars and a myriad of clubs, pubs, cafes as well as clothing, leather and sex stores. The Yumbo Center is far from glamorous. The glitzy Vegas strip or the boardwalk of South Beach, this is not. Built decades ago, it’s unpretentious, affordable and some of the easiest gay bar hopping in the world. The Bear Carnival took full advantage of the Yumbo and each night the crowds spilled onto the walkways in front of the bear bars. As the night progressed, the party slowly moved upstairs where the clubs and cruising areas were located. Bear Carnival hosted what was billed

as the largest bear pool party in Europe, several island tours, a pirate-themed booze cruise to take in the coastline and a performance from Doctor Woof, a delightfully charming quasi-drag performer who competed on “The X Factor UK.” But it wasn’t the parties, the gay beach nestled into Sahara-like sand dunes, or even the gay mall that made the week so terrific. As cliché as it may sound, it was the people. A true Goldilocks event, it wasn’t so big that you got lost in the sea of men, but it was big enough that there were always new people to talk to and new friends to make. Something about the unassuming nature of the island seemed to make everyone more amicable. I partied with an exceptionally goodnatured group of blokes from the United Kingdom. I loved chatting up the salty Parisian who seemed to secretly relish the undemanding nature of the event. And I was tickled to see a Facebook friend Feature Story

Save the Dates Maspalomas, Europe’s No. 1 gay island destination, is a resort town in the south of Gran Canaria. Grand Canary is the type of place Jimmy Buffett would probably feel right at home. It isn’t glamorous. It’s rough around the edges and more than a bit unrefined. But it doesn’t try to be more than that. Hotels are affordable, food is cheap, the pours are long and the drinks are reasonably priced. The island is easy travel. You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance for the drag bars or try to keep a social calendar for when the shows are happening or bars are going to be worth visiting. n January, U-Haul revealed that Tempe ranked as the top growth city in the nation last year. This growth, as far as we can tell, has led to more jobs, more students, more condos, more traffic and – best of all – more restaurants.

You won’t find many write-ups or even a website for this trendy new Thai restaurant. In fact, if you blink while driving down Apache Boulevard, between Rural Road and McClintock Drive, you might miss it.

While there are more coffee shops and lunch spots popping up than we could possibly count (let alone visit), there are also a few newcomers that have landed on our radar and, eventually, made it to our must-try list.

Thankfully, the pineapple perched above the neon sign on the front of the cozy spot emits an unmistakable golden glow after dusk. As the international symbol for hospitality, it has welcomed the city’s newcomers as they pass by for exactly a year now. We thought its first anniversary was the perfect opportunity to savor the big flavors getting cooked up in ThaiTini’s tiny space.

ThaiTini is one of them. Located in the unassuming house-like digs that was once known as the Baer’s Den (insert gay punch line here) this family-owned establishment might just be one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

We arrived late in the afternoon and were greeted by the natural light pouring into the space. Large windows at the front of the building invite a brightness that highlights the vibrant atmosphere that’s trendy enough for a student and refined enough to earn the respect of the most discerning Thai lover. The simple, yet funky décor is the key to the smart use of the space here: one

full wall offers brightly colored boothstyle seating, with the bar situated along the opposite wall, and there’s a long communal table perched in between. The murals, which serve as the backdrop, are definitely as worthy of a post to your story as the cuisine (which we’ll get to shortly). All that to say: sometimes size doesn’t matter. After being promptly seated, we flipped right to the specialty drinks and quickly decided on a Thai iced tea and the juice of a fresh coconut – sorry Sun Devils, there’s no piña coladas here. As anticipated, the iced tea and creamy coconut milk mixed together for the rich and brilliantly colored beverage we’ve come to expect to accompany our Thai cuisine. The fresh coconut, however, was a much more unconventional way to start a meal. The tropical fruit arrived cracked open and served with a straw to sipping and a spoon to carving out the flesh (our pre-appetizer appetizer). From there, we discovered the vastness of the menu, which nearly screams “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Left to right: Thai Iced Tea, Fried Spring Rolls, Red Curry with Chicken and Siamese Pineapple Fried Rice.

noodles with a savory soybean sauce, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, onions and eggs, all mixed together for a perfect entrée that is versatile enough to accompany other dishes and hearty enough to stand on its own. ThaiTini boasts eight different curry dishes, each one bringing their own set of distinct flavors to diners who love the essence of curry, but are always looking for something new to try. The special roasted duck, sweet nut and pineapple curries showcase the restaurant’s creativity and ability to tantalize more adventurous palates. And, as we later discovered, it’s also done right. We were impressed with the detailed variety of the sharable plates – from shrimp (three ways) and fish cakes to Thai Toast and crispy noodles – our first indicator that we’d have to come back for a round two. On the recommendation of our server we ordered the fried spring rolls, which did not disappoint. Stuffed with mixed vegetables and Thai herbs, and wrapped with Thai tofu skin, the order of five rolls came out hot and crispy, yet melted in our mouths after a quick dunk in the sweet and sour sauce. Our server was also more than happy to make recommendations as we navigated the traditional noodle dishes, a plethora of curry options and elevated rice plates, inquired about specialties, most popular dishes and just how spicy “medium” really is (seriously, we got a quick schooling in seasonal chili crops). In addition to selecting the spice level, we were pleased to discover that most entrees have the option to choose your desired protein: If you’re looking for familiar favorites, you’ll appreciate the chicken, beef, pork and tofu; if you’re seeking more exotic options, you’ll find calamari, lamb, duck and seafood here too. Admittedly, we were mesmerized by the endless possibilities and opted for “family style” dining by ordering a number of entrees for the table. IMHO, it’s by far the best way to capture the true essence of such a robust menu. We skipped the Pad Thai (always a hit) in favor of the Pad-See-Ew. This less popular, but equally delicious, noodle dish consists of pan-fried wide rice

You can tell a lot about a place based on their Pad Thai and their red curry, so that made my selection simple enough. Simmered in coconut milk, with bamboo shoots, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, green beans, zucchini and Thai basil, the chicken brought this dish together in perfect harmony. I fell in love with the flavor profile of the red curry, and enjoyed the array of vegetables that were just tender enough to underscore the importance ThaiTini places on freshness. Of course, the side of Jasmine rice ensured that I got every last drop.

we’ll save room for the sweets and we’re looking forward to exploring the grilled prawns, calamari, scallops and seasonal fish – all of which, we’re pretty sure are arriving here by U-Haul.

Speaking of rice, I am of the personal belief that no Asian culinary experience is complete without a heaping plate of fried rice. And here, the Siamese pineapple fried rice is already standing out as a crowd favorite. Spoiler alert: this isn’t just your run-of-the-mill fried rice with bits of pineapple tossed in. ThaiTini elevates the entire flavor profile of this dish with crisp veggies, crunchy cashews, sweet raisins and aromatic turmeric, which gives the rice a striking golden color and deep layer of flavor. Just like the neon sign out front, it’s the pineapple that’s the star of the show – it’s chopped fresh and adds a welcome burst of tart sweetness with every bite. We added nearly perfect tofu (a feat in and of itself), making it far and away the favorite entrée of the night. It comes as no surprise that word of mouth is generating this dish’s welldeserved fanfare; it earned our must-try recommendation as well. Before we could even consider the dessert menu, we were already planning our return visit (read: we didn’t save room this time around). Not only did we miss out on the Thai custard and fresh mango with sweet sticky rice, we missed out on the seafood experience here. On our next visit

Peppermint In theaters Sept. 7 | R | Action, Thriller

Directed by Pierre Morel (and similar to his previous film, Taken), Peppermint is the story of Riley North (Jennifer Garner), a young mother who awakens from a coma to find out her husband and daughter have been killed by a local drug cartel. When the criminal justice system fails her, she channels her frustration into personal motivation and goes on a nothing-to-lose mission to avenge her family’s tragedy and deliver justice to those responsible. If you loved Garner in her television series “Alias,” you’ll love her here.

Based on the true story of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a French novelist who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948, Colette stars Keira Knightley in the title role. Suffering in an abusive and exploitative marriage, she is forced to ghostwrite a famous novel series by her husband – while he reaps the fame and financial success. Frustrated by the lack of recognition, Colette starts a love affair with Mathilde de Morny, also known as the Marquise de Belbeuf, a gender-defying lesbian artist who inspires her to break free – and Colette’s fight for creative ownership and against restrictive gender roles ensues.

ith the renovation of Park Central Mall, located between Osborn and Thomas roads on Central Avenue, Kobalt Bar is relocating to a new space they designed and constructed, on the south side of the property.

Kobalt becomes first tenant to open in renovated Park Central Mall

We listened to our customers and worked hand-in-hand with the architect to select lights, fixtures, finishes, layout and design details that would not only satisfy our loyal patrons, but would also attract a new clientele.” Brown Builders was the contractor for the Kobalt Bar project and Plaza Companies was the developer. chapter in Kobalt Bar’s history, Perales and his staff have created a new menu of signature cocktails featuring local spirits, including Hardway Bourbon and Grand Canyon Vodka, from Flagstaff; Western Sage Gin, from Prescott; and they now offer locally brewed beers on tap that include Barrio Blonde, Pilot Rock, Tower Station IPS, Prescott Ponderosa IPA, Orange Blossom Papago and Huss Koffee. For additional information, visit kobaltbarphoenix@ gmail.com or call 602-264-5307. about the work of producers Mark Landon (Eminem, Madonna, Alison Wonderland), Jack Antonoff (Bleachers, fun.), Joel Little (Lorde, Sam Smith, Imagine Dragons) and Mark Hoppus (Blink-182). And with a team like that, we’re sure Shark won’t be a onehit wonder. A word of advice: Don’t sleep on this artist. It’ll be worth checking her out before she starts collecting those breakthrough artist awards.

The religious and spiritual themes are more prevalent in the energetic songs, the ones that will most likely be played on the dance floor. This is due to Alexander’s interest of the correlation between a church’s strong community and the sense of freedom when moving to pop music on the dance floor.

Love Monster

Alexander’s fearless expression of sexuality and vulnerability in placing himself at the front of the stage for all to see is deserving of praise in and of itself. While the upbeat songs will awake any crowd, it’s the feeling that the songwriter is holding nothing back that will end up attracting new fans and keeping the old ones.

Wonderlick Internet |

Following worldwide praise of her 2016 single, “Adore,” Australian singersongwriter Amy Shark released her first full-length album, Love Monster, this summer. While “Adore” allowed her to break out beyond her home country and reach an audience that has no borders, there’s no doubt that Love Monster will have the same effect. Despite penning these songs over a timespan of a few years, the 14 tracks that made the cut maintain a certain consistency that deliver a unified theme and sound. It’s a roller coaster ride of falling in love (“Psycho” featuring blink182’s Mark Hoppus), heartbreaks (“The Idiot”) and Shark’s personal experience in the music industry (“I Said Hi”). If this project were a television show, it would be a dramatic teen series like “Degrassi” or “Pretty Little Liars.” If you were a fan of “Adore,” which went triple-platinum in Australia, this album will hold up to the expectations you may have. It’s raw storytelling with a backdrop of pop melodies and simple sounds. And although it’s a debut album, it certainly doesn’t come across that way. It’s delivered with a professionalism expected of those who have been in the industry much longer – which says a lot 48

While the underlying themes are raw, real and impressive compared to the band’s first album, Communion, the messages can easily go over the heads of some listeners. The sci-fi and futuristic feel are evident, but stories of a dystopian world and emotionless robots are little harder to decipher. Palo Santo requires serious active listening to fully understand the point of this 14-track concept album.

After the Grammys, most of the members went off to do their own solo projects – which is rarely a good sign for the stability of a group. Fans have likely groaned that this is the beginning of the end, but that’s not the case here. Bennett, aka Syd tha Kyd, stands out in this newest compilation as her vocals weave their way through the sounds in a seemingly effortless way. Audibly, Hive Mind is focused on the sound of it all rather than telling a story or being clever with lyrics. The track that grabs my attention lyrically is the nearly six-minute, two-part, “Next Time/ Humble Pie.” The sounds slip away into the background, just enough to have a presence without overpowering Bennett’s voice. Bennett begins singing about starting a conversation with a girl who caught her eye with a “should I/ shouldn’t I” mentality. The second half is talking to someone who is missing love in their life but isn’t doing anything about it. Rather than pushing out a message or agenda, the album is a raw musical work of art for easy listening. The general sound is relaxed, creating the sense that it’s time to light candles and settle down with your honey. Looking for alone time? I would also suggest playing this album at the end of the day, wine glass in hand while you prepare yourself a nice dinner, grooving slowly to the funky dance vibes. The Gang’s All Queer: The Lives of Gay Gang Members By Terri Schlichenmeyer

Y

ou felt surprisingly safe. There you were, in a place that was certainly iffy, but you were totally comfortable there. No danger, no darkness, no problems – and in the new book The Gang’s All Queer: The Lives of Gay Gang Members by Vanessa R. Panfil, no world you’ve ever seen before, either. Everybody knows that being a teen isn’t easy, and being a gay teen is even harder. As a white lesbian, Panfil’s work in a Columbus, Ohio, LGBTQ center for young adults showed her realities beyond what she’d lived herself, and it sparked an interest in gang membership within the LGBTQ community. She already knew a handful of gay gang members. After she gained their trust, those men introduced her to a web of people who opened their world to her. When most people think of gangs, the image that comes to mind is one of tattoos and machismo. Panfil found some of the latter, but that was often used as cover for sexual identity; indeed, many (though far from all) of the men she interviewed kept closeted to their fellow gang members. Panfil explains that there are three distinct kinds of gangs: all-gay gangs, of which there aren’t many; heterosexual gangs, in which being gay could be dangerous; and more tolerant, easygoing “hybrid” gangs, in which the mix of gay and straight could be up to half of each. Panfil points out that most of the men she interviewed were careful to stress that they were very masculine. Despite the fact that more than two out of three gay men fought someone else over homophobic harassment, she also says protection from such was not the main reason for joining a gang; the main reasons were for perceptions of “family,” or because of deep friendship. Furthermore, while there was a certain amount of crime – mostly petty theft, selling drugs and sex, although fierce violence was not unknown – many gay gangs offered encouragement, a more democratic atmosphere, jobseeking help and educational support, thus acting more as “cliques” than gangs. Let’s start here: The Gang’s All Queer is a bit on the academic side, and probably 50

not on anyone’s relax-in-a-hammockand-read list. Having said that, it’s a very interesting take on a world that never makes the headlines. Not only did Panfil have access to a group of men who were willing to tell-all, she fully used that access to understand why a gay man would turn to a group that’s stereotypically anti-gay. This leads to a bigger picture, and larger questions of violence and closeting, as well as problems with being Black, gay and gangster. Also, because her subjects so casually use a word that’s normally a slur, the comfortableness of such is examined,

as are issues around sex work. Readers – even those who might struggle with the college-thesis feel of this book – will ultimately come away with a better knowledge of a world they mightn’t have realized existed before. Certainly for scholars, but also for readers interested in LGBTQ cultures, The Gang’s All Queer is a pretty safe bet. Talking Bodies

Heat Training 201 By Tia Norris

W

ith more than half of the year boasting triple-digit temperatures in the Valley of the Sun, it’s impossible to not address best practices for navigating the heat as it pertains to your fitness program. We’re surrounded by the beauty of the desert – from stunning trails to swimmable bodies of water – but it’s critical that even the most fit and biggest nature lovers among us know how to safely make use of our natural playground. If you’ve been keeping up on this column, you know from last year’s installment “Heat Training 101” (check it out at echomag.com/talking-bodiesjuly-2017) that heat will accelerate dehydration, elevate your heart rate and often decrease your appetite. And of course, these are applicable to all fitness levels, but will be more evident among deconditioned or new athletes. But wait, here’s still a myriad of additional heat training effects we still need to discuss. The 201 class is intended to elevate your heat training knowledge because we all know the cooler temps aren’t headed our way for a while yet.

Sweat = Salt (which needs to be replaced). In my Ironman adventures, particularly through very hot races, I’ve learned what long-distance endurance events feel like when you’re low on sodium the hard way. Take it from me, your body will short circuit and you’ll have a potential medical emergency on your hands. Think about it this way: sweat is salt. Now, don’t give me some BS about how “I don’t sweat in the dry heat,” 52

SEPTEMBER 2018

|

EchoMag.com

because YOU DO. The moisture simply evaporates, almost instantly, so you don’t feel like you’re sweating. But, you are, and in that sweat is precious salt.

it’s extra hot, you need extra nutrition, hydration, and recovery!

In shorter distances (a couple hours or fewer), you might be able to suffer through the sodium depletion without any major immediate consequences. But in medium-to-long distance events (a few hours or more), you could experience total system failure. This could manifest as muscle cramps, not urinating or dark urine, painful kidneys or bladder, extreme fatigue, extreme cognitive deficits, or worse.

You read that right. When it’s this damn hot, you need every trick in the book to keep your body cool (especially for longer distances and durations). If you have extra water, pour it on yourself – all over yourself, wherever you like it: your face, your chest, your back. OK, I’m having a lot of fun with this point! But, surely, you get the gist. The wetter you are, the cooler you’ll be and that means your body won’t have to work quite as hard to thermoregulate itself.

The bottom line is that you should be supplementing outdoor activity with salt. Everyone has different sweating habits (made up of fluid loss plus salt loss). At a minimum, everyone should be ingesting a few hundred milligrams of salt per hour of outdoor activity (even landscaping, for example).

You need more calories, more water, more recovery, more everything. The heat accelerates and magnifies any inefficiencies you may have in your program. Your heart rate is elevated in the heat, which burns more calories, which increases demand for during- and post-workout nutrition. You sweat more in the heat, which increases the fluid demand during workouts. Basically, your entire system has to work harder in the heat due to increased heart rate, thermoregulatory processes, and so on. So, you’ll need more sleep and expect more downtime after a hot workout. Quick rule: multiply your food, water, and recovery around a hot workout by 125 percent or more. When

Stay wet.

Skip the plain water. The more you’re in the heat, the more you need electrolytes. Plain water just doesn’t cut it when you’re talking about long training bouts in this weather. I recommend a basic electrolyte powder that has some calories to it (primarily from sugar), with extra salt mixed in to suit your needs. If you’re in the heat for more than an hour, your body needs this. So don’t cry about the taste, just suck it up and give your body what it needs! Training in the heat is brutal, even if you’re very prepared. So, follow these suggestions (don’t forget get to check out “Heat Training 101”) and, remember, the more precise and prepared you can be, the more you can enjoy the scenery while you grind toward your goals.

Not That You Asked

The fine line between selflessness and self-loathing By Buddy Early

I

t might surprise you to learn that I sometimes engage in online debates with people who spout bigotry and ignorance. That is, if you’ve never met me, never read any of my columns or, perhaps, never heard of me. Social media has made it very easy to fight with strangers. We don’t even have to leave the comfort of our own sofas. I’ll admit, I sometimes long for the days when I could eviscerate a stranger at Starbucks for leaving their dog tied up in 110-degree heat; however, when convenience and sheer volume of opportunity are taken into consideration, my work is best measured through online evisceration. It’s very likely that none of us are changing any minds when we engage in nasty – or even cordial – online debates. But that’s not the point. Most bigots already know they’re bigots, and they’re fine with it. Most of them will never change. By belittling, shaming and exposing them, we can reinforce in others’ eyes that bigoted behavior is not the norm, and we will not put up with it. And it’s pretty fun to point out to someone that their way of thinking is dumb and uneducated, and they’re on the wrong side of history. Privately, you just know that burns them up! Bigots are not happy people to begin with, so making a fool of them in an online discussion adds to their misery.

What has me concerned lately is the number of online entanglements I find myself having with people from our own community. These are not terribly cantankerous debates, but rather civil ones where honest back and forth happens. (Except the recent one where I politely offered my opinion to a trans woman, suggesting that her attitude toward one of her sisters was extremely judgmental and then in the same sentence told her to go fornicate herself. That one, admittedly, went a little far.) This summer I’ve witnessed far too many LGBTQ people argue that businesses open to the public should be able to decide which members of the public they will serve. It started with wedding cakes – there are plenty of LGBTQ and LGBTQfriendly bakers, so what’s the big deal, right? Except this issue has never been about wedding cakes. It’s always been about the impending battle for “religious freedom,” which has little to do with that concept and a lot to do with legalizing freedom to discriminate. The defense of this discrimination strikes me as a very subtle form of selfloathing. I’m not talking about the kind of self-loathing reserved for Log Cabin Republicans, who stand in a room full of people who hate them and think “this is where I belong.” Rather, this is a kind of self-loathing that results from decades of being told implicitly and explicitly

that we are not welcome at the equality table, and that we should be grateful for the scraps of progress that fall to us. It’s a self-loathing that results in us selflessly standing up for others’ rights before and instead of our own. (Lest you still think this is about wedding cakes, let me remind that there are gay people among us who don’t think they should be entitled to marriage. Their justifications for such occasionally sound well-reasoned or at least thought-out, but it’s rooted in selfloathing. Furthermore, most of us have those LGBTQ acquaintances who would like to see Pride celebrations go away entirely. Yep, more self-loathing.) Ask yourself: If I am quick to stand up against bigotry and discrimination levied against other races and cultures, shouldn’t I advocate the same for myself? Don’t I deserve the same equality? Am I not entitled to the same freedom from discrimination? I hope the answer to these questions is yes. I hope you realize the fight we are facing is not about cakes. And I truly hope I don’t have to fight with you online. Buddy Early grew up in Tempe and has been involved in various communities across the Valley since. He is a former managing editor of both Echo Magazine and Compete Magazine. Community
